A “Wild” Summer Job Bryan Patterson, TennesseeKnoxville, has spent the last several summers working for Northern Tier in Canada, a high adventure program of the Boy Scouts of America that offers wilderness canoe trips. This past summer, he was promoted to Atikokan Base Director, a management position, and was responsible for food service, the Trading Posting, outfitting and the base office. He helped train other staff, worked with vendors to keep the base supplied and reviewed paperwork for incoming crews. Brother Patterson says he gained valuable business experience from working in a foreign country

as well as conducting frequent operations across the border. Northern Tier has three bases— the main base is outside of Ely, Minn. and secondary bases are located in Atikokan, Ontario and Bissett, Manitoba—meaning Patterson had to work with vendors and participants in both the U.S. and Canada. One of his favorite aspects of the job was working with citizens from almost all of the Canadian provinces. He believes his coworkers enhanced his experience working internationally and he has made lifelong friends. For anyone interested in working outside the

U.S., Patterson encourages it. He also recommends making friends from the local area. “Those friends are the ones who will make your experience special,” he says. p
