I’ve always wanted to get into Yoga. Since I teach exercise classes (did) 3x a week, I never made time to start a practice. Now I support a local Sheboygan Falls Business; Midwest Power Yoga and adore their virtual live classes. I try to take at least 3-4 days and do Yoga, really for my mental strength more than anything. It’s truly helped me get through everything. The constant change now, my drastic change in virtual work load and not seeing my friends and family to just give them a big hug. Big Hug to all of you.

For a very long time I’ve been feeling the nudge to do mixed media/collage/ art journaling and I’m finally doing it. I love how it just takes me away and I don’t even realize how much time passes!

SERVING THEIR COUNTRY WHILE EARNING THEIR DEGREES

M

ore than 1,200 members of the Wisconsin National Guard are serving in support of the state’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and many are doing so in addition to working to complete their degrees. This means that soldiers and airmen working long days supporting the

state’s response to COVID-19 also are resigned to staying up long into the night or working weekends to get homework, tests, and assignments complete. These Guard members— many of whom attend colleges and universities around Wisconsin—go the extra mile to find balance between their military and civilian lives.

Guard members have been logging long hours, day and night, and over weekends for nearly three months supporting the state’s response to the pandemic, and for some, their mobilization began in mid-March—a few short months before they were slated to graduate from college, which required them working late nights or weekends to get homework, tests, and

STRONG WOMEN | On Guard assignments completed in order to graduate. Many of the citizen soldiers and airmen serving as part of the response exchanged the thought of walking across the stage in caps and gowns for wearing masks and personal protective equipment as they step up and answer the call for prolonged activation at community-based testing sites, self-isolation facilities, supporting the logistics effort, or serving on a staff. Many have continued with ongoing commitment to service even amidst the unknown. Putting their personal lives, goals, and ambitions on hold is commonplace for many members of the military, and higher education often takes a backseat to deployments, training, or other military requirements over the course of a military career. Guard members, especially, usually balance day-to-day school with work, family, and life. The dedication that is needed to earn a degree while serving our country is no different, according to some who recently completed their degrees amidst their service to the state for the COVID-19 response. “One of the hardest things for me at this time, is that I don’t know if I can apply for jobs, even though I’ve graduated because I’m not certain when this mission will end,” said Tech. Sergeant Bridget Cox, a medical technician with the 115th Fighter Wing and the Wisconsin

National Guard’s Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear Enhanced Response Force Package (CERFP), who just graduated from the University of WisconsinWhitewater with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. Cox is currently serving as the noncommissioned officerin-charge at an isolation facility providing medical monitoring to people who have been diagnosed with COVID-19. “My university was very understanding of my goals and all that is going on in life and they were able to help me get to the finish line,” Cox said. “Serving during this time has been challenging while trying to support my family and finish school. I am also trying to find work, but it’s difficult to communicate with future employers when I don’t know when I will be available to start with them at this time.” Staff Sgt. Christina Whitney, a medical instructor at the 426th Regional Training Institute, also recently completed her degree.

in nursing after I joined the military,” she said. “This semester I was not scheduled for any training to interrupt my schooling and was looking forward to that,” she added. “COVID-19 changed that for me as well, and it was really tough with 14 credits and three kids. It felt really good to finish and overcome all of those barriers as I prioritized and completed my educational goals.” “My professors were supportive and understood how tough this was for us all,” Whitney added. “I’m glad to be able to serve and glad that I was able to finish the semester of school by working with my teachers and the school to allow me to graduate.”

According to Maj. Joy Staab, the Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs education services officer, more than 1,000 Wisconsin Guard members utilize state education benefits each semester on average. Even more use federal education benefits, she said. “Education benefits are one of the top reasons service members join the Wisconsin National Guard,” Staab said. Throughout this semester the state education office had a few dozen service members reach out to find out what options they had for withdrawing from or completing their classes, as they got mobilized to support COVID-19 missions.

STRONG WOMEN | On Guard In those cases, the education office referred the service members to the 2019 Wisconsin Act 75, a state law that helps protect service members called to serve on short-term state or federal active duty. Some of the protections include tuition reimbursement, re-enrollment, and opportunities to complete final projects and exams at a later date. The education office also encouraged students to work with their instructors, colleges, and universities to determine their best courses of action. “I graduated in December 2019, then did a five-week temporary duty, passed my nursing

board exam and became an emergency room nurse,” said Tech. Sgt. Andrew Zacharias, a search and extraction medic with the 115th Fighter Wing and the CERFP. “I was only there (at my new job) for three weeks and then was requested to be a part of the isolation facility mission, and I have been on mission since then. O

ver the past few years, scientists have continued to learn remarkable things about the way that the microbes in and on our bodies-sometimes referred to as our “microbiome”--affect our health. In particular, they’ve discovered that the number and kinds of bacteria that colonize our digestive tract early in life seem to play an important role in the development of our immune system. Along with this discovery, researchers have also begun to identify specific factors that they believe can prevent the right combination of microbes from being introduced, potentially resulting in a variety of immune disorders.

What are some of these factors?

VAgInAl bIrth Versus cesAreAn sectIon. by traveling through the mother’s birth canal, babies receive bacteria that colonize the gut and help to regulate immune system development. some research suggests that babies who are born through cesarean section do not receive them and are more prone to allergies and other immune system problems. breAst feedIng Versus formulA feedIng. A mother’s milk kick-starts the baby’s immune system. It contain antibodies that help ward off infections--especially those that involve the digestive system--while the baby’s own system matures. babies who are formula fed do not receive these antibodies (though they do receive a degree

of passive immunity through the placental wall in the three months prior to birth) and tend to have a higher incidence of bacterial and viral infections. eArly use of AntIbIotIcs. early use of antibiotics-particularly broad-spectrum antibiotics--can kill off the good bacteria that are colonizing the baby’s digestive tract as well as the bad ones being targeted. this can change the composition of microbes that live in the baby’s gut at the same time his or her immune system is developing.

Later in Life: Your Diet and Your Microbes

While the evidence linking gut bacteria with immune system development continues to grow, there is also mounting evidence that the food you eat can have an impact on those microbes later in life. this in turn may have a real impact on your overall health and wellness. one of the more recent studies that show the relationship between diet and microbiota was conducted in 2014 by researchers at duke and yale. In this study, researchers compared the microbiota of a group of volunteers. For five days, the volunteers limited their diet to rice and vegetables. After eating their regular diet for a week, the volunteers then spent another five days eating only animal and fatty products. the results showed that only three days after each dietary change there was a significant variation in the type of microbiota present.

What Type of Diet Supports Immune Health? diets that are high in sugar, animal fats, and processed foods provide nourishment for microbes that cause issues with digestion as well as immune health. unfortunately, these foods are also a large part of the standard American diet. It comes as no surprise, then, that doctors see millions of patients every year for problems such as heartburn, bloating, constipation, irritable bowels, and diarrhea. changing your diet to include foods that encourage a healthy balance of microbes can help keep you at your best.

Keep the following tips in mind when building a gut-friendly diet:

hEalth | mind & body

can be particularly helpful after a round of antibiotics, which can negatively impact your microbiota balance. In addition to probiotic foods, giebler chiropractic provides a clinician-level probiotic supplement that is highly recommended. As a certified nutirional consultant, I can be a very helpful resource when working to build a diet that is friendly to your digestive and immune systems. because chiropractic care puts a special focus on lifestyle choices, our office and our services can provide you with targeted feedback on how your food choices are impacting your overall health. let’s get together and work together to build a food plan that improves your well-being in all areas, including your microbe balance. Making choices that positively impact the beneficial organisms that live inside your own body and those of your family members can significantly improve everyone’s well-being. A healthy immune system is much, much more reliant on nutrition and overall wellness and not just masks and hand sanitizer…those superficial aspects are just that… superficial. Remember—your immune system health is a partnership that starts on day one and lasts a lifetime, one meal at a time!

remember—your immune system health…lasts a lifetime, one meal at a time!

• Limit foods that are processed and high in sugar. cutting off this food source helps to keep unhelpful bacteria in check. • Increase your intake of beans, seeds, nuts, vegetables, and fruits. these foods help to increase the amount of “good” bacteria. • Consider probiotic foods. Foods that are referred to as “probiotic” (such as kefir or Greek yogurt) contain live bacteria. these microorganisms help to supplement the good bacteria already in your digestive system and can help to tip the balance in your favor. Let’s eat! Even during a pandemic, we’re still hungry! Breakfast looks inviting at the Log Cabin Inn

LIFESTYLE | Let’s Eat!

A

s things changed rapidly and extensively in recent months because of the COVID-19 pandemic, at least two things remained the same—people still need to eat, and there are still a lot of great outlets for food in northeastern Wisconsin. Without a doubt it has been a challenge for anyone involved in the food and beverage business over the past several months. There were periods with no revenue followed by times in which major changes had to be made to generate some income while also doing everything possible to keep employees and customers safe. None of that has changed the facts that folks around here love to eat, and that there are plenty of great places around here ready to feed them. Customers did their best to support the local food and beverage industry during COVID-19 restrictions by ordering takeout and delivery of food. Now that establishments are reopening—with numerous safeguards in place—and people are trickling back in,

the focus is back on those two great little words: Let’s eat! Following is a little bit about area places in which to grab a bite....

Log Cabin Inn The Log Cabin Inn in Howards Grove has been welcoming guests through its doors for decades. What started in 1947 as a hamburger place with milk shakes and malts has changed hands only a few times and has become what customers see today. While the interior décor may have changed—as well as the staff after over five decades—the tradition of great food and friendly service at a price that does not hit customers over the head remains. The Log Cabin Inn offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner seven days a week. Its full bar boasts happy hour drink specials Mondays through Thursdays. Badger’s Den recently remodeled including the addition of 86-inch and 75-inch TVs for sports watching. Also new is the bar top, chairs, a back bar, a white oak top shelf rail, and a larger bar area. Badger’s Den has been under the ownership of Josh Buchholz and Kurt Schifel for the past two years. Dawn Van De Kreeke of Badger’s Den said the hometown bar/restaurant likes to keep things local. “We strive to use as many local options as we can,” she said. “We pride ourselves on excellent food and customer service.” Badger’s Den also tries to help out local families in need when they can, Van De Kreeke said. “On Easter Sunday we donated 18 boxes of Easter meals to local families and 30 individual meals to community members without loved ones in the area,” she said. “This was

The result was a silver lining that honed and perfected their pizza offerings. “We were able to get a makeshift pizza kitchen up and running which has really surprised us with the great response to our pizzas,” Dale said. “It was maybe a blessing in disguise to go through this.”

Victorian Chocolate Shoppe opened in October 1996 and had three previous owners prior to Peggy Tauschek purchasing it in October 2005. “It’s strictly a family business,” Peggy said. “My daughters and son-in-laws help during busy holidays, otherwise it’s just my husband and I the majority of the time. Packaged gift boxes of chocolates are always available, as are chocolate-covered raspberries—the shop’s biggest seller. Strawberries are made May through October and, of course, on Valentine’s Day. “We carry a large selection of packaged candy (pre-bagged) and nostalgic candy,” Peggy said. “Every holiday we carry a large selection of seasonal candies.” Peggy explained how she got into the candy business. Communities centers, museums, and businesses in general. Since self-isolation is a hardship for so many, it was very important for us to continue to reach out to our members and friends. We also knew that folks were tapping into their creative side. Many were starting home projects or doing more creative cooking or gardening. “Social media is a great way to virtually present the arts,” Hahn added. “Our brand new beautiful Wearable Art Show (the first of its kind for us) was on display in our gallery and only a few people had seen it. Therefore, we created a virtual tour of the show and thousands of visitors were provided an opportunity to view it and we even made a sale. Additionally, our education coordinator, Tricia Roberts, is live on Facebook every Wednesday morning teaching an arts and crafts session for children and adults. Recently we held a virtual wreath making class through Zoom and more are scheduled. “Tricia realized that families needed basic art supplies to complete projects at home, so now we are selling customized art kits in two sizes. She also organized two virtual concerts featuring the alumni members of Mill Street Live and the Sartori Concert performers. Reservations are now open for our Children’s Summer Art Camps taught by instructor Mary Starnitcky. If needed, we’ll be able to conduct these classes virtually. At this point, we

are fortunate to conduct virtual classes, and the gallery and gift shop are open to the public. We are confident that productions will resume this fall/ winter, including a play in September, Paint the Towns, En Plein Air in October, three more new art shows, Sartori and PAC Singers Concerts, the ‘Story of the Nutcracker,’ and finally the New Year’s Eve Sartori Big Cheese Drop.” PAC President Tom Slater said, “If you enjoy the arts and want to share the experience, we invite you to join the Plymouth Arts Center. Everyone is welcome. Membership helps to support the many events scheduled for the coming year. Attending these events adds to your enjoyment of the arts and encourages others to experience the arts. In this technological age, the arts offer an important connection to all that is good about being human. Share the experience, enjoy the ambience of the Plymouth Arts Center, and support one of the treasures of the community.” Patrons of the Plymouth Arts Center have plenty of good things to say about the facility and what is has to offer. Just one example of that came from Sharon, who said, “The Plymouth Arts Center is only a little over 25 years old, but continues to grow in new ideas and programs. It is like the heartbeat of our community where good things are always happening. Even our surrounding communities

P LY M O U T H & E L K H A R T L A K E have taken notice and like to come to Plymouth just to enjoy the family-friendly and happy events and performances taking place at the Arts Center. Jackie Pottratz and her husband opened Allechant Boutique LLC in 2011. “My husband and I own the boutique and I am the holder of many job titles from purchasing, bookwork, decorating, pricing, cleaning, and running the

boutique,” Jackie said. “I love helping women feel good about themselves and there is nothing like a new outfit to perk up your day. We proudly serve the Plymouth community and many surrounding communities and people from out of the area who visit us whenever they are in town or new visitors that are first-time customers.” Pottratz added, “We are a women’s boutique that carries clothing in sizes small to 3x, purses, jewelry, and many other accessories. We even have a small men’s gift section so if you need a little something for that special guy we may be able to help. We get new merchandise often and we do live sales on our Facebook page also. “Having this business allows us to give back to the community whenever possible. I belong to the Plymouth Rotary, I am a board member of the Plymouth Chamber and The Plymouth D.A.M., and I am on the City Board of Appeals and I belong to Ladies of the Lakes. I have to leave time to spend with my wonderful husband or I would do more.” Jackie added, “I am hoping our business will be here for many years to come. I do not see myself retiring anytime soon. I absolutely love what I do, and our customers love that we are honest when they try things on, we carry sizes for most people, and we keep our store organized and updated. After all, ‘It’s

Susan Radke owns Seranya Studios Art Boutique, The HUB Studio Café, and Seranya Studios Arts Foundation. The boutique began on July 13, 2013, the café on Mother’s Day weekend in 2017, and the foundation in November 2018. “We have had as many as 13 employees, but now have lost a few due to being able to offer fewer hours during the Stay at Home order,” Radke said. “We have eight amazing coworkers right now that have gelled into a tremendously talented team. And they are all really nice too! We’re looking for a new member of the team right now.” She added, “The boutique is a wonderful collection of the works of local artists, fine crafters, and makers. I started this in downtown Plymouth as a way for local artists to come together to share a gallery space and showcase their works for sale. We moved with the inception of The HUB to the current location in 2017. We provide art, gifts, art and craft classes, hand-crafted soaps and skin-care products, books by local authors, and so

much more. The boutique also carries the works of a number of local youth artists and now under the umbrella of Seranya Studios Arts Foundation is working together to provide more opportunities for local youth and adult artists. For example, we will have Anna Murphy doing a mural wall in our garden area for The HUB Studio Café during this summer. This is an opportunity for Anna to hone her skills and showcase her talent for character creation in her unique Manga style. “All of these businesses which I created really have a beautiful, symbiotic relationship that’s based on the desire to be community oriented, to provide for others, and fill needs and niches within the community. This service mindset ranges from providing great food that’s healthier, to helping young artists grow, to fighting the battle against domestic violence and human trafficking.” Radke started these three businesses and combined them with here original business, New S-Scapes Landscape Design (“which I still do on a limited basis because I am a die-hard plant geek and I love the smell of good soil”). She said, “I’ve also been a life-long artist/ creator, which fits right into the Landscape Design. I truly wanted to provide a place for more artisans to showcase their works and I knew it was too hard

Communities for most to afford their own galleries. That’s how the concept of Seranya Studios Art Boutique was born. After a couple years, I knew we would have to add something to the experience in order to continue to be open—there just wasn’t quite enough business yet to be sustainable. to them. They agreed in summer 2016 and moved here to Plymouth to work with me in opening The HUB in January 2017. Ultimately, my goal is for Amy and Katie to run and enjoy The HUB while I continue the marketing of that business for a few more years while we build on the existing programs for the foundation. I will never be a good ‘retired’ person, so Seranya Studios Arts Foundation is the entity I want to someday retire into exclusively. I have a tremendous heart

T&L Tactical keeps growing to look at new products to ensure we stay on the cutting edge,” she added.

Laurie Fettig is the “L” in T&L Tactical, a full gun shop and range in the Newton/Manitowoc area. T&L Tactical has been in business since 2013. “We started off as a little mom and pop hobby shop but within a few months had to hire two employees just to keep up with demand. In 2017 our banker called and encouraged us to purchase a building just off the highway and said it would be a perfect spot for the indoor range we were hoping for. By March 2018 we were moved into our new location and the range opened up seven weeks later in April 2018. We currently have six full-time staff members that can help you select the perfect firearm or accessory, give you instruction on the range or answer your questions. T&L really focuses on being a comfortable place for seasoned shooters but also inviting to new shooters and women. We offer a variety of classes, private instruction, full-service gun shop, and indoor shooting range.” As a managing member/ owner of T&L Tactical, Fettig said her business was really born out of necessity. “The firearm industry is a maledominated industry. Being a female who loves the shooting sports, it was difficult going to stores and making a purchase. Often times, male clerks were more interested in selling my husband a gun than myself. Salespeople didn’t take me seriously, didn’t listen nor provided the expertise I was looking for. When I talked to my friends, they all said the same thing,” she said. “So that’s when I decided to move forward with opening. I haven’t looked back since. We continue to grow, adding a range and a much bigger location in 2018. I have been able to

Some of the customer comments regarding T&L Tactical can be found on the company’s social media platforms. Here are a few: • “Attractive facility. Nice selection. Incredibly helpful and courteous staff provided a wonderful experience for a first-time purchaser; answered every question I had and more. Couldn’t be happier. A++.” • “Very nice facility. Indoor range was clean, warm, and had great targets. Staff was friendly, prices reasonable. Will definitely be coming back.”

Laurie Fettig really hire a great team of staff as well. It was important that I not only had employees that loved to shoot but really like helping people. I really want people to notice a difference when they come into the shop. We want everyone to feel welcomed regardless of their shooting experience. Rachel, my store manager, and myself have gone on to become NRA certified instructors. We teach a wide variety of classes that are booked several months in advance. All our staff are certified Range Safety Officers, CPR certified and Stop the Bleed Certified.”

• “Great range and knowledgeable, friendly staff. Good selection of firearms and an hour in their range is better than golf any day.” • “One of the nicest indoor ranges that I have used: well lit, extremely well ventilated, and cool target system on the tactical range. Employees were very friendly as well.” Fettig acknowledges that owning a business does not leave her much time for hobbies; however, she is an active grandma who loves to spend time with her grandbabies. “I feel blessed to be able to spend a few days a week with them. My dear husband lets me have a vacation every three years so I look forward to that time off to get away and unwind,” she said. 

Fettig added, “We want all our customers to feel safe while on the range.” Fettig said T&L Tactical looks forward to expanding its classes, offerings on the range, and product lines based on customer feedback. “We want to stay relevant and will continue

Giving the birds a hand

Y

ou may not think about it often, but wild birds use your lawn as a rest stop and place to call home. As you spruce up your lawn and garden for the season, there are simple steps you can take to protect them and help them thrive.

provide birds with food and places to rest and nest. Birds in turn, spread pollen and seeds, while acting as a natural pesticide. Speaking of which, gardening organically will also go a long way to protecting the health and safety of feeding birds.

According to Spencer Schock, founder of WindowAlert, makers of bird-friendly products for homes, the following changes are easy to implement in order to create a safe harbor for wild birds:

• Make windows visible: Up to 1 billion birds die annually from striking windows in US, according to the American Bird Conservancy. The good news is that it’s relatively easy and affordable to prevent your home from being part of the problem. Special window decals that reflect ultraviolet sunlight, a wavelength of light noticeable to birds, have been proven to substantially reduce the likelihood of bird strikes. Giving the appearance of slightly frosted translucent glass but glowing like a stoplight for birds,

• Plant native species: Planting native species on your property is one of the most impactful ways you can improve your local environment, as well as make your lawn and garden a healthy habitat for wild birds and other fauna. Native plant species

those from WindowAlert feature a range of decorative patterns. To boost protection for birds, you can also apply a high-tech liquid called WindowAlert UV Liquid in between decals. More information, as well as useful application tips, can be found by visiting windowalert.com. • Monitor cats: Monitor your cat’s time outdoors to ensure they are not terrorizing or hunting birds. An enclosed play area for your cat is the most effective way to keep birds in your yard safe from your furry companion’s natural instincts. Good deeds start at home. This season, do your part to help migrating bird populations reach their destinations safely.  (StatePoint)

Household hacks

Great ideas for enhancing your home spaces

T

he weather is warming up which means you’re probably chipping away at your cleaning to-do list. Looking to have a little fun with your chores? Try these five unexpected shelf liner hacks around your home to protect against messes, enhance organization and add pops of color to lackluster spaces. 1. Liner in the laundry room. It never hurts to have a little extra storage in the laundry room. Cover the top of front-load machines with shelf liner for easy cleaning and to help keep items in place, then use the space to display your detergents and fabric softeners in decorative baskets or containers. 2. Spice up the pantry. It’s finally time to trade your mess of boxes, bags and random spices for those dry food canisters and pantry organizers you’ve been eyeing. Before arranging them on your shelves, put down a layer of liner to catch any crumbs or leaks. Kick things up a notch by choosing a printed liner to complement your kitchen décor. 3. Everything but the kitchen sink. The cabinets under your kitchen sink tend to be a catch-all for random cleaning products, tools and household supplies. But they can also be a hot spot for water damage, grime

and leaks. Cover under-sink surfaces with shelf liner and organize your products in sleek containers to elevate this dreary space. 4. Fridge envy. Feeling inspired by pics of your favorite celeb’s perfectly stocked fridge on social media? Take a stab at recreating their masterpiece by lining up your produce, drinks and condiments by type and color. Even if you can’t keep it up all year, at least you’ll get a great pic for the ‘Gram. Bonus Tip: A layer of shelf liner will help keep your groceries in place and make cleaning up any leaks or spills a breeze. You can even throw the liner in the washing machine and re-use it! 5. Dress up your closet. It’s the perfect time of year

for a closet purge. After you’ve divvyed up your “donate” and “keep” piles, cover your closet shelves and dresser drawers with fabric top liner to protect clothes from snags, crease lines and discoloration. While you’re at it, apply leftover printed liner to the sides of your drawers for an easy, DIY upgrade.

For additional shelf liner hacks and DIYs, visit duckbrand.com. Clearing the cobwebs and getting a fresh start this season? Use shelf liner around the house to add beauty and organization to your spaces.  (StatePoint)

Recipes, Recollections & Reminiscings from Marge By Marge Petts Tiny Houses have been around for several years, but I have never seen one in person or known someone who lived in one of those small houses. Our oldest son lives in a town near the Rocky Mountains. One of his favorite things to do is hike in the “Rocky’s” on his days off work. One day while hiking he came across a Tiny House near one of the trails. The man who lived in this house was outside, so he had a chance to talk to him. The owner of the tiny house that looked like a small barn and was painted red, said that he trained horses. He was from Florida and said he traveled wherever he was hired. The house was on a platform built from pallets. He can pull the trailer carrying his house from place to place, as he moves around the country. Although tiny houses are not common in this area or in our state, there actually is a subdivision of tiny houses in the Denver area. Our son said the reason there are more tiny houses in Colorado than Wisconsin is because home ownership is so out of reach in that area for many people. Purchasing a home is difficult because the average cost of buying a house is considerably higher than in comparable areas in our state. Although tiny houses may not be extremely popular in Wisconsin, tiny weddings are becoming the newest trend all over the country. The cost of the average wedding continues to escalate to the point that couples commonly spend $20,000+, making the United States the most expensive country to have a wedding. Don’t forget that the price of meat, and food in general, has continued to rise as we live amid an economy that continues to be impacted by a virus that isn’t ending anytime soon.

Now is not the time to despair or cancel plans to get married. Put your time, attention and money into making the wedding of your dreams a perfect day, only on a smaller scale. Many people have beautiful backyards that can be turned into a park-like setting with tents, tables, chairs, silverware, etc., that can be rented and set-up for you. County parks also have areas for rent. You could also have the ceremony in your yard or on a deck. Stop the guest list at 100 people or less. You can still order a gorgeous cake and a large bouquet of flowers. We all know someone who takes great photos. Maybe they could be coaxed to be your photographer for the day, as a wedding gift. Read about how people from other countries plan their wedding to give you some unique ideas. The Dutch have their best friends take the role of Master of Ceremony. They plan the whole wedding and that is their gift to their best friends – the bride and groom. Your mini, or, aka micro wedding could easily happen for under $2,000, and leave you with enough cash to take a dream honeymoon, or have a down-payment on your first house, that hopefully doesn’t have to be a “mini-house”. The soul needs more space than the body - plan wisely when buying a house or planning your wedding. See Meals with Marge weekly in the Tri-County News.

Young at heart

Moses died in 1961 (at age 101) she had nine grandchildren and more than 30 great-grandkids. I’m sure she was an inspiration to all of them and gave great advice. One of her famous quotes, “Life is what we make it, always has been, always will be,” says it all.

Of course they’re all famous actors, but if you guessed they were born in 1960 you get a gold star. Add rock singer Bono, comedian Kathy Griffin, TV actress Jane Lynch, and yours truly to the list and you get a whole bunch of folks turning the big 6-0 in 2020. I remember as a kid I thought 25 was old. Funny how the older you get, the definition of “old” changes. Comedienne Lucille Ball, who died in 1989 at age 77, shared her wisdom back in the day. “The secret of staying young is to live honestly, eat slowly, and lie about your age.” Hmmm. While I try to be honest, I gobble my food and am not afraid to admit my true age. Maybe I should start heeding Ball’s advice more closely. I should also probably eat more chicken—not only did it keep Colonel Sanders young, but it helped supplement his Social Security. Before his first retirement, Sanders ran a service station in Kentucky which also fed hungry travelers fried chicken. “I was 66 years old. I still had to make a living. I looked at my Social Security check of $105 and decided to use that to try to franchise my chicken recipe. Folks had always liked my chicken,” Sanders said. By the time Colonel Sanders died in 1980, at age 90, he was worth an estimated 3.5 million finger lickin’ bucks. Speaking of poultry, famous folk artist Grandma Moses was quoted as saying, “If I hadn’t started painting, I would have raised chickens.” Good thing she raised a paintbrush instead. Did you know Anna Mary Robertson Moses (aka Grandma Moses) began

While singer Frank Sinatra didn’t live to 101 like Grandma Moses, his song “Young at Heart” spoke of the secret to longevity. Sinatra sang, “And if you should survive to 105, look at all you’ll derive out of bein’ alive. And here is the best part, you have a head start. If you are among the very young at heart.” seriously painting at age 78? It’s true. Grandma Moses completed more than 1,500 images during her lifetime—most of them nostalgic paintings showing life in rural America. She was a farmer’s daughter (one of 10 children) who ended up marrying a farmer and then had 10 children of her own. Sadly, five of them died at birth. After Anna’s husband died in 1927, she continued running the farm with the help of her youngest son until she retired to her daughter’s home in 1936. Anna took up embroidery in her 70s but when arthritis made needle point too difficult, she started to paint. In 1938 Louis Caldor, an art collector, saw her paintings in a Hoosick Falls, New York drugstore window. He was so impressed he drove to her daughter’s home and bought the remaining 15 paintings. The following October three of her paintings were exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Shortly after that Hallmark bought the rights to reproduce her paintings on greeting cards and the name Grandma Moses became known across the country. By the time Grandma

Along with “Young at Heart,” Sinatra recorded dozens of hit songs including “My Way,” ”New York, New York,” and “Luck Be a Lady” by the time of his death in 1998 at age 82. Sinatra was quoted as saying, “May you live to be 100 and may the last voice you hear be mine.” Sinatra’s smooth crooning gave him the nickname “The Voice,” so hearing Sinatra sing might just be a peaceful way to leave this earth. I’ll turn 60 this year, but I don’t feel ready to hear a Sinatra encore anytime soon. Still, it seems as a person ages, the days get longer but years go faster. American comedian Groucho Marx once flicked his cigar and quipped, “Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.” Marx, who turned 86 before he passed away in 1977, also said, “I intend to live forever, or die trying.” While living forever is not an option, I believe it is important to make the most out of the time you have. This article has listed many quotes from famous folk, but how about words of wisdom from not-so-famous me? “Life is a gift to be opened each day. Don’t crinkle the paper and throw it away.” Happy birthday to me and everyone else turning 60 in 2020. 
