TJ Hecht purchased his first gym, Anytime Fitness, in Montrose in 2014. Five years later, the previous owners of the Anytime Fitness, here in Delta, contacted him with a desire to sell. At the time, it was just a business decision that made sense for him and his wife Jen. Beth and Lyle Wright, were longtime friends and gym members in Montrose and were eager to join as partners in the Delta club. Beth had been looking for a change after 10 years in a physical therapy clinic so it was a natural transition for her to step in as gym manager. The Delta gym was acquired last February. The gym recently celebrated its one year anniversary in Delta. TJ and Jen added the Anytime Fitness in Grand Junction to their Western Slope gym community at the end of October last year. Beth’s son, Dalton, is working to manage that facility.

About the gyms: The gyms are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week to accommodate any schedule. The team is working to keep them a beautifully clean, comfortable and friendly place to exercise. Each of the gyms offer a variety of Life Fitness machines, free weights, TRX/Plyo stations, MMA and boxing equipment, cardio and spin bikes, and Montrose and Delta have a semi-private exercise studio with classes on demand. The great thing about Anytime Fitness is that members have access to all Anytime Fitness gyms, so about 4,000 different locations world wide. Of course the gyms are open 24/7 for members. The offices, however, are staffed during weekdays, but it is recommend to call to make an appointment. This year in Delta, they have

completed the mandated franchise upgrades as well as adding a few things to make the gym more comfortable and functional. Next year they look forward to adding more equipment and providing more community involvement, fun programing and friendly competitions. The owners are excited to build a gym community that really promotes and enables members to make positive progress and lasting change their desire is to create a culture of healthy process and progress.

AppleShed From the day the AppleShed Gallery opened, owner Connie Williams has made it a top priority to support the talented artists of Delta County. An artist herself, she understands that it can be difficult to stay motivated, particularly in an economic downturn. “There’s absolutely nothing in this building that you couldn’t live without,” she said. But that’s like saying you could live without the beauty of flowers blooming in your garden or the smell of freshly baked bread. Those are the things that lift our spirits and bring smiles to our faces. That’s what you’ll experience as you walk through the galleries at the AppleShed, stopping to admire a delicate watercolor or a boldly executed sculpture. Beauty surrounds you at every turn, from paintings and wall art to furniture, pillows, candles, candleholders, ceramic pot, and other accessories for your home. There’s a great selection of jewelry from local artists, as well as culinary and giftware departments. Pick up some jars of flavorful dip or fruit syrup and create a basket of gourmet treats. Stop by the deli for breakfast and lunch, a sweet treat or a latté. In season, a fruit stand offers fresh apples, peaches and cherries from the Cedaredge-area Williams Orchards, Dan Williams and Connie’s joint venture. As the gallery attracted more and more visitors — the working studios closed, while the artists’ work remained. Connie had no trouble filling interior space with Western decor, beginning with handcrafted furniture from the Musser Brothers. That furniture was so successful she began looking for other artists. Looking back on the number of years in business, she recognizes the vital role the community and local artists have played in the success of the AppleShed Gallery. “The artists have made my job so easy, and the support of the community has been phenomenal. That’s made the last 16 years fun and rewarding.”

What sets this wine apart is the aging process. It is aged for years before it is sold. The wine has won two double gold awards in two international wine competitions. Going forward, they will be adding new wine blends and new varieties. They are open year round for tastings and sales. After having to close for a year due to the health reasons of the owner, it is up and running again. At the deli, you can enjoy homemade apple pies by the slice or whole/ baked or frozen, and apple sauces from the company’s apples. Most products are made from scratch, with no MSG, few preservatives or additives as possible. Going forward, there will be a new menu created for the deli. This will include fewer processed foods and more vegetables in the dishes. Key employees that make it all happen are the manager Kindra, Lilly and Cherie.

Williams Cellars L.L.C. Dan Williams has a love of good wine, which led him to open Williams Cellars in 2009. As a lifetime fruit grower, Williams said there has been over 100 years in fruit growing and five generations on the orchard. The wine created here is aged in barrels in the basement of AppleShed.

Colorado West Ophthalmology Associates Has your optometrist or ophthalmologist recommended cataract surgery? If so, there’s no need to look any further than Colorado West Ophthalmology Associates, established in 1980 with the principal goal of providing quality eye care to residents on the Western Slope. Throughout the years, the practice has continued to expand both in its scope of eye care and its clinical facility to keep pace with the growth of Delta and surrounding areas. What is a cataract? A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens. We all have a lens that sits behind the pupil. It helps to focus light inside the eye. Typically with age, the lens can become cloudy or hazy. When we look at something, light rays travel into the eye. Light cannot enter the eye and focus crisply when a cataract is present. How does a cataract affect vision? Since cloudiness in the lens prevents light from focusing properly, this has a similar effect on the vision as a smudge on a camera lens or a dirty windshield. Cataracts typically grow slowly over time, usually over months to years. Patients may not have any symptoms in the early stages of cataract, but as they grow the vision changes become more noticeable. Certain symptoms commonly go along with cataracts. Patients often complain of blurry vision and difficulty seeing fine print. They may need brighter lights to read. Glare problems can arise and patients may notice halos around lights. Colors can become faded and more yellowed. How do you know if you have a cataract? The only way

to know for certain whether a cataract is present is with an eye exam. Your eye doctor can tell on examination if a cataract is present and whether or not it requires treatment. There are many other eye problems that can cause blurry vision such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetes. An eye exam is the one way to determine the source of blurry vision. Cataracts can start to develop around age 40, but are much more common the older we get. It is a good idea to have yearly exams starting at age 65. Other factors that can lead to cataract development include diabetes, use of steroid medication, and trauma. How are cataracts treated? When cataracts are small, they can be monitored with yearly eye examinations. Once they get large enough to cause visual problems, they can be taken out with cataract surgery. There are no medications or eye drops that can treat cataracts. Cataracts will never go away and will continue to get worse until they are removed with surgery. What happens during cataract surgery? During cataract surgery, the cloudy lens is completely removed. It is then replaced with a man-made lens. This lens safely remains in the eye for the rest of your life. The whole surgery typically takes less than 15 minutes. Patients are able to go back home the day of surgery. Will you need glasses after cataract surgery? In the past many people needed glasses after cataract surgery. Thanks to recent advancements in lens technology, patients now have an option to become more independent of glasses. Multifocal and astigmatism correcting lenses are now commonly placed in eyes to reduce the need for glasses. Who performs cataract surgery? Not all eye doctors are cataract surgeons. Only an ophthalmologist (eye M.D.) can perform cataract surgery. Custom, state-ofthe-art cataract surgeries can be performed in Delta or Montrose — there’s no need to travel to Grand Junction! Area Best Pawn and Gun, LLC Area Best Pawn and Gun LLC is a place that is unique for its customer service and very competitive pricing, according to Manager JD Smith. The store frequently gets customers out of Grand Junction who are looking for less expensive purchases than the ones they can find at Cabela’s or REI. Located at 610 Hwy. 92 in Delta, Area Best Pawn and Gun was preceded by two Montrose locations. The Delta location opened in 2013 when Smith noticed a large amount of their customers were coming from Delta to shop. Area Best Pawn and Gun carries a variety of

merchandise, from firearms and ammo to reloading components, supplies, tools and even musical instruments. The store also carries a number of trading goods. The store carries a wide choice of brands, including big firearm brands like Remington, Winchester, Browning and Smith and Wesson. Since the beginning of Area Best Pawn and Gun, Smith has managed the store, which has been run by local people with local clientele. The business stands as a staple in the community of Delta. Over the years, Area Best

Pawn and Gun has grown in customer base, productivity and business loyalty among clientele. Looking forward, Smith said the team is looking into expanding their merchandise base as demand rises. Big John’s Lumber Big John’s Lumber in Cedaredge is a unique combination of a full-service lumberyard AND an ACE Hardware Store. Since 1904, the business has occupied the same location, so nearly everyone in the valley knows where to find the products they want or need. Big John’s is open seven days a week, and deliveries go out Monday – Friday throughout Delta and Montrose counties. The loyal customer base includes many contractors who have turned to Big John’s since the 1980’s as well as private citizens who rely on the store and yard to supply emergency repair supplies or general household maintenance materials. These long-term employees are able to offer what customers need and want: solid advice and experienced knowhow. President of Big Johns, Susan Kunkel has been with the yard since 1979. She said it is the only job she has ever had. In the early 1950’s, Webb Bryson, her grandfather, and Warren Brewer, her great-uncle, owned and operated the yard and a sawmill in Cedaredge. Although actual ownership of the business has changed over the years, some member of the Brewer/Bryson family has remained connected to the management of the lumberyard and hardware store. Bill Bryson, Susan’s uncle, was the general manager in 1979 when he brought her into the business. She began working as a cashier, then steadily progressed as she set up the Epicor computer system in 1982, moved to store manager and trainer for the bookkeeping staff, and finally became the general go-to person in the business. Susan’s leadership continues to keep Big John’s vital, interesting, and successful. Big John’s has new ownership as of November 2019. Jeremy Lowry and Andy Abrams and their families of Salt Lake City Utah saw the potential of Big John’s and purchased the business and property. They are very exited to be a part of the community and keep everything customers love about the store and yard operating at the same level of service all have come to know and appreciate and to help it grow for the future of its employees and the area.

Dr. Yu is the medical director of Grand Mesa Rheumatology. She received her medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School at Worcester, Massachusetts and completed her general Internal Medicine residency at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire. Dr. Yu completed a Rheumatology Fellowship at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. She is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology. Rheumatology is a specialty in internal medicine dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of rheumatic diseases. The term rheumatic disease is used to describe the many conditions that can affect the musculoskeletal system. These diseases can affect the bones, joints, blood vessels, soft tissues and muscles in the body. There are over two hundred diseases that fit into the category of rheumatic disease. These conditions range from the milder soft tissue rheumatism such as tennis elbow to the inflammation of joint linings. Hotchkiss Community Chamber of Commerce If you think of a community as a quilt, then you can imagine that the patches of fabric are made up of the individuals, groups, organizations, institutions and businesses in a particular area — all with their own interests, needs and wishes. In small communities like the North Fork Valley, those stitches are often provided by volunteers who have the common good in mind. Like many of our civic organizations, the Hotchkiss Community Chamber of Commerce (HCCC) exists because there are many local business owners who believe that our stitching should be strong — that the community should be served. Delta Cabinet Company In the early ’80s, Gary had worked for a millwork company in Ohio that built and installed laminated store fixtures for a women’s clothing line based out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The retail company was expanding to the West Coast and Gary’s boss at that time decided to start a second manufacturing facility in Delta to better serve the western stores. After a little over a year, the boss decided not to keep the Delta plant open. Gary and Deb, with the counsel of some prominent Delta business men at that time, decided to open the facility back up on their own. They bought the current building in 1989 and renamed the business Delta Cabinet Company. Delta Cabinet continued with providing the store fixtures until approx 1996. This began the commercial side of the business that has grown to providing thousands of cabinets and countertops for schools, hospitals and office buildings all over the Western Slope of Colorado. Not long after opening the doors, Gary started taking on more custom residential jobs – kitchens, vanities, etc. to fill the holes in the schedule. In 1994, Gary and Deb’s oldest daughter Heather and her husband Nick began working at the shop and learning the business. The residential side became Heather’s “baby.” She took over the designing and selling of residential cabinets. The current showroom has over 10 vignette displays of semicustom lines of cabinets available. The strong economy has increased the need for residential cabinetry in Delta and surrounding counties. With the growth in business has brought in additional kitchen designers Jill Jurca and Donna Carmichael. Jill has been with Delta Cabinet Company for over 10 years. In 2007 Nick and Heather bought in to the business as 50% owners and the goal is to buy the rest of the business from Gary and Deb in 2020. To date, Delta Cabinet has worked on over 6,000 projects on the Western Slope. If you’re looking for a pick me up, Coaltrain Coffeehouse and Roasting Co. is here for you. Owner Les Ware has owned the business for one and a half years. The shop offers coffees, espresso drinks, frozen drinks and smoothies. Name brands available include: Big Train, Davinci, Torani, Monin, RepublicanTea and Elevation Tea. Coaltrain also offers food which includes: quiches, breakfast burrito and sandwiches and baked goods. Les roasts all their coffee onsite weekly. Once an early 20th century home, the shop has been open for almost 20

years and was named after an actual train derailment of a Union Pacific train in 2000. This is where the slogan “I got derailed at Coaltrain Coffeehouse” was dubbed. The coffee shop offers a unique atmosphere. The chai teas and the team’s sense of humor make this spot stand out. The shop celebrated its one year anniversary this past September. Grand Mesa Veterinary Hospital Natalie O’Regan, DVM, has owned the Grand Mesa Veterinary Hospital for about a year following the expansion of a successful mobile large animal veterinary practice. She moved to the Delta County area in 2018 from a rural Wyoming town. The business was originally started in 1987. O’Regan took over when previous owner Dr. Steele retired, and said the business is a perfect match for her. “Originally I had been in contact with Dr. Steele regarding buying some veterinary equipment only,” O’Regan said. “After meeting him and the staff, touring the building, and talking with some of the clients it felt like the perfect fit for me, so I took the plunge and the rest is history!” Grand Mesa Veterinary Hospital offers small and large animal medicine and surgery, mobile digital X-rays, in-house blood work, cattle herd health care (such as calving help and PAP testing), equine routine care, equine lameness evaluations and more. “I hope it impacts the community by providing care to everyone’s animals, providing a service to help the animals of the community,” O’Regan said. Varner Equipment Varner Equipment in Delta is owned by Devin and Ashley Varner. They were both born and raised in Delta, are active in the community and are both graduates of Delta High School. The business was originally started in 2003, and the Varners have been the owners for 17 years. “Devin has always loved buying and selling tractors. His grandpa got him started, and Ashley joined the business when they got married,” the business stated. “We sell tractors, equipment, trailers, and horse and stock trailers. We provide a shared kitchen area with propane

stove, gas barbecue, water, cooking gear and utensils, and tables and chairs. The new solar showers have been very popular especially with families. Soft solar lights come on at night and make a lovely setting to enjoy the unobstructed views of our Dark Sky. Mountain Coal Company, LLC West Elk Mine Mountain Coal Company, LLC’s (MCC) West Elk Mine, part of Arch Coal, Inc., (ACI) headquartered in St. Louis, MO, is located about one mile east of Somerset on Highway 133. The West Elk Mine is an underground longwall coal mining operation, producing some of the highest quality (with low sulfur and low mercury content) and high heat value coal in the nation. Applications for Phase 1 reclamation bond liability release are typically submitted within one year after reclamation occurs and includes the removal of all facilities, backfilling and regrading of the site, and establishing drainage and sediment control. Applications for Phase 2 bond release usually occur within 5 years after reclamation and require a demonstration that surface sediment generation levels are better than those from adjacent native, undisturbed areas. Phase 3 is the final, full bond release and can be applied for no sooner than 10 years after reclamation occurs. Approval of a Phase 3 application requires two years of vegetation sampling to demonstrate acceptable species diversity, cover and production levels have been achieved. To date MCC has successfully completed Phase 1 release on over 121 acres, Phase 2 release on about 68 acres, and Phase 3 release of over 46 acres. Mountain Coal Company, LLC remains hopeful about the future of the West Elk Mine operations in the North Fork Valley and believes that coal mining will continue to be an important part of the valley’s economy. Rocky Mountain Hair Rocky Mountain Hair, located at 335 Main St. in Delta, offers hair, skin and nail services in a relaxed, clean and professional setting. The popular downtown salon began in 1989 as Rocky Mountain Hair Design under the ownership of Stacey Brown. The salon changed ownership in December 2019 after 30 successful years in business. The Pondy Owned by DJ and Barbara Hladik, The Pondy opened in 1985. The Pondy offers beer, wine, cocktails, brats, hot dogs and polish dogs. The facility has pool, darts and horseshoes. Events held in the hall include weddings, family, birthdays, anniversaries and class reunions. The Pondy also has bands and dances. DJ and Barbara said they have a great atmosphere and history. They host a variety of events for Valentine’s Day, Halloween and more. The third Tuesday of the month they have a veterans coffee in cooperation with Welcome Home Alliance for Veterans. They support The Pondy Cancer Warriors helping families with children who have cancer or other illnesses. Every year volunteers help stage events designed to raise money for individuals in need of assistance. For 2019, the warriors raised a grand total of $25,120. In January 2020, the Cedaredge Area Chamber of Commerce awarded volunteer of the year to Barbara along with two other folks. True West Hats With a wide range of experience, Charlie Rutledge and April Selman offer a wide variety of hats at their Paonia shop, True West Hats. Charlie and April spent many years traveling Internationally which lead them to settle in a small town in the province of Salta in the North West of Argentina. They spent six years living the “South American” life. While there, they had several businesses including: a restaurant, home building and property development, beer brewery/hotel and farm. One of the most inspiring things they learned was true craftsmanship. You simply didn’t go to a big box store to buy things such as furniture, ceramics, leatherwork, textiles, and most all products, it was either made or not even available. After several years and an expansion of their family, they returned to the U.S. After returning, they worked with a private label for a high-end retailer in Aspen. They were asked to bring true, quality, hand-made products in hats, leather goods, and bags to market. The brand was immediately successful, however, after missing their slower paced life in South America, they decided to move to Paonia, and reach back to their entrepreneurial spirits and start their own hand-crafted products business. Charlie and April along with hatmaker Sarah Peterson, create

custom design hats with their customers and make them out of the finest materials of rabbit fur, beaver fur, wool and palm. Name brands include True West Hats and SolTree Hats. As they say hatmaking is a lost art and there are not many hatmakers around. They also provide cleaning and refurbishing of hats including sweatband replacement. Water Jets West Owned by John Story, Water Jets West was started because there was a need for this type of work in the area to support fabrication shops. Story’s background is in metal fabrication and machining. He opened shop in July 2007. They offer water jet cutting for assorted materials — wood, glass, stone, metal. This process happens through high pressure water, and the use of their machine referred to as “Old Faceful”. The brand that they use, Seek Outside, is ultra lightweight company equipment. This makes collapsible titanium stoves for them. This is a small industry and work is in high demand. In the past two years, the

company has grown by almost 30%. Key employees include Darlene Story, the secretary and bookkeeper for 13 years. Clark Neal, a mechanic, has been with the company for about four years. United Country Colorado Brokers Taking on unusual real estate projects By Gary Hubbell, Accredited Land Consultant United Country Colorado Brokers & Auctioneers “If the project is big, unusual, and difficult, we want it!” says broker Gary Hubbell, ALC, of United Country Colorado Brokers and Auctioneers (UCCB). “If most brokers can’t wrap their arms around it because it’s too difficult, too big, or too complex, that’s our sweet spot,” he confirms.

That is true commitment.” Jake Hubbell has distinguished himself with outstanding video, imagery, and mapping skills, Hubbell reports. “Yes, he’s my son, but it should tell you something when every broker I meet tries to hire him away from me,” Hubbell says with a smile. “He just turned 24, but his skills are better than a lot of brokers who have been in the business for 20 years. Not only does Jake relate well with people, he understands business very, very well and he’s becoming a great negotiator for his clients.”

The new year is already looking promising for UCCB. “We have several new candidates who are studying for their real estate licenses,” Gary says. “You just wait. These folks will be some very, very strong entries into Western Colorado and Utah real estate.” Asked for details, Hubbell gave some hints. “These candidates have a really strong background in the types of real estate that we sell. Ranching, oil & gas, hunting, outfitting, farming—these new agents have some true-blue life experience.” As far as new markets, Hubbell points to the Roaring Fork Valley and the Grand Valley. “We sold $1.3 million in the Roaring Fork Valley last year, and that was without trying very hard. There’s a lot of great inventory between Aspen and Parachute, and we’re going to establish a presence there. Mike Gerbaz, our Aspen broker, is fourth generation, and he has a strong client list of people who are looking for investment properties.”

In late 2018, the team closed on a luxury home in Ridgway. “It had been listed for 10 years by various Telluride brokers,” Hubbell explains. “We got the deal done in 6 months at just shy of $4 million, 12% above the seller’s minimum price.” A noteworthy project in 2019 was the Garrett Winery, a large vineyard, winery, and ranch complex near Olathe. “It had been listed for four years by another broker with no success. Time was drawing short for the seller and he really needed a sale. We sold it in six months at very close to full asking price, and another full price cash offer came in just an hour after we got it under contract.” Other 2019 sales included a large hay farm and ranch in Green River, Utah; a luxury vacation home in Dillon, Colorado, brokered by Rob Gash; a beautiful ranch in Collbran, Colorado; and many mountain cabins, vacation homes, golf course homes, and horse properties.

“Speaking of Battlement Mesa,” Hubbell says, “that is one of our big projects for 2020. We are liquidating the remainder of the developer’s portfolio, and there are some really exciting properties there. We have two large hunting properties that offer excellent hunting for deer and elk; three large commercial buildings; five golf course building lots; and several large development tracts that are priced to sell. The whole portfolio is offered as a traditional listing, but if the properties don’t sell, they will go to auction on June 27, 2020.” It promises to be one of the biggest real estate events in Western Colorado, Hubbell says. “But that’s what we do!”

Asked for the key to the brokerage’s success, Hubbell has an explanation. “We do it better than anyone else,” he says. “Our goal is to make every one of our listings literally look like a million bucks—or several million, as the case may be. We demand outstanding photography. We have led the way with stunning drone video. Rob Gash and Jake Hubbell are both certified FAA drone pilots. Rob and Jake are also very talented with our interactive mapping programs. Then, of course, our web platforms are so widespread that you can’t help but find our properties.”

“Some people ask me what are those three initials, ‘ALC’, on my business card,” Hubbell says. “It means ‘Accredited Land Consultant’, a designation awarded by the Realtors Land Institute, which involves 104 classroom hours of study, submitting a portfolio of $10 million in land sales, two letters of recommendation from other ALC’s, and passing a final exam. That designation is one of the most difficult to attain and most prestigious designations in all of real estate.” There are some 40,000 agents and brokers in Colorado, Hubbell explains, and only 30 or so ALC’s. “It took me 10 years to get it,” he says, “but it was worth it. The knowledge I gained has been instrumental in helping to put together bigger deals that are far more complex than the average residential sale. Both Rob Gash and Jake Hubbell are studying for their ALC designations, too, which makes us a real powerhouse when it comes to higher-level skills.”
