SAGINAW — Something we can all agree upon for the year 2020, is that it has been a year of extremes. It’s still difficult to imagine that wearing a mask is now considered the new social norm. Since Delta College is now open for Fall semester it’s time to start giving some thought to our back to school wardrobes. With COVID-19 still hanging around we need to be sure that part of that new wardrobe includes a face mask and some sanitary precautions. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention wearing a mask is not just to protect you, it’s to protect others in case you get sick. One perk of wearing a mask is that it doesn't have to be plain. So long as your mask contains multiple layers of fabric to help reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19, almost any material is suitable. This means that there is more room for creativity. So, if you’re tired of wearing a plain

mask...chances are it’s time to spice things up. But where can you get a more exciting mask? Online shops like Etsy that support independent sellers, have a wide variety of masks you can choose from for both adults and children. Masks range from having 3D sewn on flowers all the way to funky holographic designs. Even larger retailers like Walmart have stepped up their mask selling game. Walmart recently started carrying more exciting masks that come in packs of two or more. Mask varieties have consisted of superheroes, colorful bandana patterns, barbie patterns and even quotes from the popular television show F.R.I.E.N.D.S. If you’re currently short on funds, there are other ways of having a mask without spending money. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has instructions on their website on how to make a face mask using an old T-shirt or a bandana. Sewing instructions are also available to those who want to sew their own mask. Remember, wearing a mask is a courtesy not just to yourself but to others around you as well. Though wearing a mask may be part of our everyday lives for the time being, there is no rule saying we can’t make them stylish, fun, and safe for everyone.

Dr. Karl Rishe takes on Delta College and the challenges of COVID-19 Jordan Green Reporter @Jordan_Green6

UNIVERSITY CENTER - Dr. Karl Rishe hit the ground running on his first day of being the Vice President of Student and Educational Services on July 1, 2020. From meeting new coworkers and putting names to masks, the new Vice President was in charge of the college’s COVID-19 response and ensuring the safest return to campus for students and employees. Rishe comments that not only did he have to learn Delta’s internal protocol, but also the local Health Department protocols to begin welcoming students back to campus safely. The most difficult aspect Dr. Rishe adds is that the protocols are always changing. “Quite honestly, COVID has changed, you know, a hundred times in the last week.” Many guidelines require COVID-19 prevention posters, sanitation stations, social distancing markers and plexiglass. In March of 2020, President Donald Trump signed the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act (CARES). The CARES Act is an economic relief package worth over $2 trillion to help Americans and small businesses. The money given to institutions is used to adapt to COVID, where many changes are seen on campus. “The hand sanitizing stations, a lot of our plexiglass, our scanning systems are all things that, and this is globally, your institutions are purchasing with the CARES Act in order to adapt to COVID-19.” Comments, Dr. Rishe. Students are also able to apply for emergency aid funding due to the impact of COVID-19. The

only eligibility requirement is filling out The Free Application of Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. Keeping up with local health departments and the CDC’s guidelines is just a small portion on Dr. Rishe’s plate. As Vice President of Student and Educational services, Dr. Rishe oversees Disability Resources, Financial Aid, Career Development, Counseling and Advising, Registrar's Office, Admissions, and Athletics, among other campus responsibilities. But most recently Pioneer Connect.

Quite honestly, Covid has changed [...] a hundred times in the last week - Dr. Karl Rishe Dr. Rishe encourages students to utilize the new platform that is conveniently located on the portal homepage. Pioneer Connect allows students to access and make appointments for the services Delta College offers. “You can sign up for everything through that portal [Pioneer Connect],” Adds Dr. Rishe, “Whether it's tutoring time in a computer lab to complete your online course, [or] if you don't have the electronic services you need in your house, you can make an appointment with an advisor.”

Stay connected while staying distant!

Detroit Lions season predictions Kelvin Butler Reporter @KelvinButler19

UNIVERSITY CENTER — In these unprecedented times the NFL has decided to continue with the 2020-2021 season. Knowing that the Detroit Lions are a part of the NFL, it’s time for the season preview. With the Lions not making any big moves in free agency. Their only hopeful additions to the team this offseason are Jeff Okudah, D’Andre Swift and Julian Okwara. The key rookies they drafted that we all hope blossoms into Hall of Fame caliber players. The Lions 2019-2020 season saw a lot of injuries that sidelined many of the impact players like Matthew Stafford and Kerryon Johnson. Two players who make up a significant part of their offense. So this season should see some improvements with them back.

Scenes at Delta: Post-COVID edition

After looking over the 16 games, I have the Lions going 7-9. With five games being an uneasy victory, they should still be favored. Then there are five games that can go 50/50. I have them going 2-3 in those games. Then there are six games that I don’t have the Lions winning. Obviously an upset can happen especially if key players get injured, after all, anything could happen. Head Coach, Matt Patrica will be a big factor in whether the Lions can steal a game or two and win more of those 50/50 games. The NFC North is one of the tougher divisions in the NFL. The Lions have the right players to make the playoffs. But sadly they’re stuck in a division with Aaron Rodgers leading the Green Bay Packers, a hot Dalvin Cook leading the Minnesota Vikings, and a stout defense leading the Chicago Bears. Overall, I predict the Lions going 7-9 for the 2020-2021 season. Their best case scenario predictions would be them having an overall score of 12-4 for this season and worst case being a score of 5-11. Good luck Lions!

NBA playoffs second round predictions Kelvin Butler Reporter @KelvinButler19 UNIVERSITY CENTER — The “bubble edition” of the NBA playoffs has given us some special moments. The Utah Jazz and Denver Nugget series, OG Anunoby game winning shot, and Luka Doncic historic playoff debut. With the first round down and the second round in action, seeing a potential upset in the Milwaukee Bucks and Miami Heat series. Here are my second round predictions: I have the Los Angeles Lakers bearing the Houston Rockets in five. With the Lakers having the better duo with LeBron James and Anthony Davis and being a

much bigger team than the Rockets. The Lakers should easily win the series. Next, I predict the Los Angeles Clippers bearing the Denver Nuggets in five. The Nuggets are mentally drained, with them having a tougher first round series then the Clippers. They are also at a disadvantage in the coaching department. Player wise, the Clippers have more seasoned veterans and better players than the young Nuggets team. I have the Boston Celtics beating the Toronto Raptors in six. The Celtics have better players who are hungrier than the Raptors players. Now if Pascal Siakam goes off like he should by scoring the ball more and being aggressive; since

he’s the number one option in the team. This series can get competitive if he does such. So far he hasn’t so I predict the series to be over in five. Then finally I have the Miami Heat upsetting the Milwaukee Bucks in five. It’s going to be an entertaining series, seeing Jimmy Butler and Giannis Antetokounmpo going around it. Jimmy has a killer mentality that Giannis does not have. When the game gets close, Jimmy will get a bucket while Giannis is still uncomfortable in that situation. Then seeing how close the first two games were it will come down to those types of situations. Where so far the heat is 2-0 against the Bucks.
