Obesity, alcohol, and smoking are widely considered to be the major controllable yet high-risk mortality factors. However, the results of the study empirically prove that having a purpose in life is more important for decreasing

the risk of death than exercising regularly or not drinking or smoking. This means that it has never been more important

to have a strong life purpose. While we cannot cheat death, we can certainly alter time by pursuing an important goal we want to achieve. There is a universality in having a strong life purpose resulting in a much lower mortality rate. The HRS found that this association remained true regardless of race, gender, wealth, or educational level. Within this universality, there is transcendence beyond judgment. What is key, according to the researchers, is not what your sense of purpose is, but simply, that you have a sense of purpose. Dr. Celeste Pierce at the University of Michigan, one of the study’s authors, states, “Where your fulfillment comes from can be very individualistic… For some, it might be raising children. For others, it might be doing volunteer work.” My own sense of purpose has grown exponentially stronger with each tragedy I have experienced and with every hardship I have overcome. It is no coincidence that I have managed to escape death and beat cancer twice through my overwhelming positivity and strong desire to leave behind a legacy. Now there is finally science behind the magic. Now is the time for you, my dear reader, to lead a more joyous and prosperous life by following your heart and chasing your deepest dreams. Not only will finding or following your purpose make life

more pleasurable, but it will also increase your lifespan and amount of time you have to turn your dreams into reality.

The ability to seek purpose in life is the component of mortality that you can most sway your way and, by doing

so, will have the most impact upon your life! The world is a blank canvas; it is time for you to paint your own masterpiece. When I next discuss how I used my tragedies for subsequent growth, let my experiences be a mirror to reflect your own greatness when you have an adverse life event. Use hardship as a springboard to hurdle over obstacles. Carpe Diem! STAY FRESH LOCALLY: SILICON VALLEY FARMERS MARKETS By Annie Ho California is the best place for fresh fruits and vegetables. People have access to them all year round, unlike other states that experience extreme seasons. With California’s Central Valley only a short drive away from Silicon Valley, lots of variety and choices such as organic and non-GMO food are abundantly available. Recently, I spoke with a friend about health and fitness. The conversation centered on healthy eating. Having grown up in the Golden State, I never realized how privileged we are to have regular access to fruits and vegetables as compared to those living elsewhere. Being able to shop for the freshest produce is important to Californians. A great place to start is by buying from our local farmers markets.

The Angle of Evolution

Responding to Life’s Ups and Downs By Ken DeLeon

My father was a brilliant professor and chairman of his mathematics department. He was a man of few words, yet highly articulate – when he spoke, people listened. In a discussion, it always seemed like he was calculating the best and most concise response as if he was solving a math equation. If I were to describe my approach to life with a mathematical metaphor, one that my father could appreciate, it would be: Life is Like an Upward Sine Wave. What is Your Angle of Evolution? As you may recall from high school trigonometry, a sine wave is a mathematical curve that is constantly oscillating up and down in a regular, consistent manner. The amplitude of a sine wave is the maximum distance traveled from the center line. I created the quote above and the mindset to get there only through enduring, analyzing, and then evolving from four life events that others would consider tragedies. While we all face adversity in life, each crisis is a fork from which you either

12 | DE LEO N RE A LT Y.CO M

evolve upward or devolve to new lows. While you cannot control life events, how you react to them will determine its outcome. Life events are neither inherently good nor evil; they are open to our interpretation and our reaction. Control your reaction and it will set you free. We all have a sine wave of life, with the valleys and mountains of life being our oscillating from peak to trough with a relatively regular pattern. What I noticed in my life is that my periods of sadness or loss were followed by periods of exceptional growth from the resulting epiphanies and changes that loss brings. With the right mindset, I evolved from being barely able to suffer through loss to accepting loss immediately and further optimizing my life because of these lessons. The knowledge I gained through overcoming my “tragedy” gave me the strength to win the battles I would fight. Even in the trough, I could look up and see the light of knowledge I would find at my future peak. Now I not only can accept adversity, I readily seek it as I know the greatest evolution comes after calculated risk-taking and failing fast and forward.

THE DELEON TEAM JUST RANKED #1 IN THE ENTIRE USA By Michael Repka

Way back in 2011, Ken DeLeon and I discussed the possibility of establishing an innovative new real estate team. At that time, no individual agent or team from Northern California had ever been number one in the United States in terms of sales volume. That honor typically went to real estate agents and teams from places such as New York City or Beverly Hills.

On Friday, June 28, 2019 REAL Trends published its 2018 rankings in the Wall Street Journal and the DeLeon Team was the number one real estate team in the entire United States! What’s even more remarkable is that this is the second time in the past four years that the DeLeon Team has received this incredible honor. Some of our competitors may argue that it is unfair to compare individual agents and small teams to the DeLeon Team, which has an arsenal of specialized professionals on staff, including attorneys, interior designers, licensed contractors, handymen, marketing specialists, and photographers. Others argue that we outspend everyone on the marketing of our properties, so we are effectively “buying” our success. However, that is exactly the point. All of our amazing people, and the unprecedented level of service and marketing that we provide, are exactly what has made us number one in the country. We are honored to reach this milestone and thank all of our amazing people and clients for making it possible.

However, warned Denise, “whenever you’re out walking, stay on the trail,” she said pointing to a classic woodland menace, “The poison oak is everywhere.” Since much of the town is already built out, path easements have been mostly established while new development requires city Pathways review. The city expects adjacent property owners to help in the maintenance of the path by keeping it clear of debris, brush, and other obstacles. According to the city, public agencies and private property owners “have very broad immunity from trail-user lawsuits,” and ask owners to refer liability questions to the city manager. The Mary Stutz Path lies in tribute to a longtime Pathways advocate who was key in the creation of the system. Stutz served on several Los Altos Hills committees. Upon her passing in 1997, the mayor of neighboring Los Altos declared, “The town of Los Altos Hills is very much richer because (Mary Stutz) chose to move here.” Her late husband, Bob Stutz, another longtime town advocate who served in civic positions passed in 2018. A recently opened Pathways trail, appropriately near the Mary Stutz trailhead, is named after him.
