From the Headmaster Dear Friends of Delbarton, By the time you’ve received this issue of Delbarton, we will already be one-third of the way into our 85th year of Benedictine Catholic education at Delbarton. A great deal of activity and energy is packed into the fall semester, and you’ll see plenty of examples later in these pages, along with our coverage of the 2023 Baccalaureate Mass and Commencement Exercises. The dedication of the Pizzo Family Field House on May 5, 2023 stands as a testament to the dedication and generosity of our community as a whole, and of the family of Ken and Meaghan Pizzo P ’20, ’22 in particular. This state-of-the-art building has transformed our campus, providing our students with an unparalleled venue to develop their athletic abilities, foster teamwork, and build Delbarton Brotherhood. From the spacious locker rooms to the cutting-edge training areas and multiple facilities for fans, the Pizzo Family Field House has truly become the heart of our athletic program. The two buildings we have opened since March 2021, St. Benedict Hall and now the Pizzo Family Field House, have each given Delbarton’s staff new tools to advance our mission to develop the whole young man in mind, body and spirit. St. Benedict Hall’s new Learning Commons (the Library and its associated collaborative resources), and the new classrooms and Guidance Center for both underclassmen and College Counseling, dramatically enhanced our ability to serve our students’ academic and personal needs much more effectively. Similarly, the Pizzo Family Field House also significantly improved our support for our students’ mental and physical well being through athletics and team development. Both of these buildings speak to the centrality of our students’ welfare in all that we do each day.

The Latin root of facilities is facilis (“easy to do”). Buildings and their spaces are the settings designed to make as easy as possible the sacred encounters between teacher Maureen Nowak and student that are at the heart of a Catholic school. The people that make these many daily encounters happen are the ones that bring our facilities to life and make them places where each person experiences moments of God’s grace. As you will see in the article written by Dr. Matthew D’Urso ’96, our Dean of Guidance, in the last decade several key initiatives have been implemented to provide as comprehensive a range of supports for the mental health and well being of our young men. In our program and physical development and innovation, the work we have done these last ten years empowers our teachers, counselors and coaches to provide for the full healthy development of the young men confided to their care. Commencement speaker Patrick Ramsey ’86, P’18, was awarded the Delbarton Medal by Fr. Michael. The Peter B. Haas Award, established in memory of a 25-year-old Marine pilot killed in Korea, is awarded for distinguished leadership within the school. For his work in upholding the values of brotherhood and unity among his peers, and for his outstanding service in many areas of School life, the Peter B. Haas Award was presented to 2022-2023 Student Body President James ’Finn’ McDonald ’23 (Wake Forest University).

The James E. Nugent Award, established in memory of a graduate of the class of 1969, is awarded to the Delbarton senior who best exemplifies the spirit of giving himself to others. This young man has distinguished himself among his peers for his unquestioned integrity and for self-forgetful service to his classmates, school and community. The James E. Nugent Award was presented by Jim’s niece Mary Carter to Amir Eltaki ’23 (Yale University).

During Commencement, Delbarton alumnus Major J. Alexander Thew ’07, an Instructor of Economics at the United States Military Academy at West Point, presented Matthew Gemma ’23 with his appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point.

The Brian E. Fleury Award is awarded to an outstanding scholar-athlete who demonstrates the same passion for scholarship that he does for athletics. This young man is the consummate team player, selfless in all his endeavors, and always putting the needs of others before his own. The Brian E. Fleury Award was presented by Jen Fleury P'19 and Tim Fleury '19, Brian's wife and son, to Kevin Hager ’23 (Cornell University).

The Paul Jermak Scholarship, established in memory of a graduate of the class of 2004, is awarded to a senior who best embodies Delbarton’s mission of educating the whole person in mind, body and spirit. The Paul Jermak Scholarship was presented by Paul’s mother Mrs. Eileen Jermak to Luca Tusche ’23 (Babson College).

The Succisa Virescit Award is presented to a senior who has manifested love for life and for the school and has significantly grown through challenge as implied in the school’s motto, Succisa Virescit, “cut down he will grow back up strong again.” The Succisa Virescit Award was presented to Henry Forte ’23 (Williams College).

The Bryan Bennett ’94 Award was established to honor the memory of a member of the class of 1994 who died at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. This award is for the “Quiet Hero,” a student who, like Bryan Bennett, has distinguished himself for his day-to-day work ethic, his consistent nobility, and his unfailing kindness, all of which have made him a model of steadfastness to his classmates and teachers. The recipient of this award is chosen by his classmates. Bryan’s nephew Carlos O’Connor presented The Bryan Bennett Award to Arjun Bobba ’23 (University of Michigan). n the eighty-five years of Delbarton Athletics, the Green Wave has earned well over one hundred state championships and countless county, conference, district, and individual titles. Over one thousand recruited college athletes got their start here, and we are proud of our Olympic and World medalists, national title and record holders, and pro athletes.

Over those years, young Delbarton athletes competed on the same fields and courts and

changed in the same locker rooms used by generations of alumni. Attracting self-motivated scholar athletes to a school that demands hard work and strives for excellence has always been the Delbarton way. Pairing them with committed coaches who double as their teachers and mentors is our recipe for success. At Delbarton, learning and inspiring intellectual curiosity have always come first, and that forward momentum is

The Pizzo Family Field House

Pizzo Family Field House was officially blessed and dedicated at a wellattended event on May 6, 2023.

seamlessly integrated into Green Wave Athletics. State of the art sports facilities remained aspirational dreams while the school focused on academics and the arts: a modern Fine Arts Center debuted in 2006, Trinity Hall was renovated in 2017. Funded by the Brotherhood Campaign, St. Benedict Hall opened in 2022, with a new library and guidance center. In athletics, a turf field and new track were installed in 2006. In 2009, the 40 Acres Athletic Complex debuted offering modern fields and locker rooms for Green Wave Soccer and Baseball. Wrestlers still commuted nine miles to practice, tennis players and runners changed in their cars. After games, football and lacrosse players marched uphill like bands of brothers to vintage locker rooms. Their fans never

complained about the outdoor concession stands and port-o-johns. All that changed in April 2023, when the doors opened in the Pizzo Family Field House, instantly combining seven cross-season sports – cross country, football, lacrosse, tennis, track & field, winter track and wrestling – in one spectacular facility. Headmaster Fr. Michael Tidd says it best: “The Pizzo Family Field House physically expresses Delbarton’s commitment to excellence in all aspects of our program by enabling all sports and all student-athletes the opportunity to build Brotherhood and a positive locker room culture.” Varsity football and lacrosse players now stow their gear in the spacious Volpe Locker Room just steps away from the field. Wrestlers practice in

the Mike Grey ’06 and Pat Glory ’18 Wrestling Room, and all student athletes have an opportunity to work out daily in the Ramsey Strength and Conditioning Center. This fall, Athletic Director Tony Negrin counted two hundred and fifty students using the new building in a single day. Thanks to the addition of our new courts, this spring Delbarton will host the Morris County Tennis Tournament with Villa Walsh Academy. The 32,000 square foot Field House includes coaches’ offices, meeting rooms and event spaces. Outside is a seventy-five-space parking lot, five new tennis courts (the old courts recently were rebuilt from the ground up), permanent bleachers, and a techconnected Regan Stadium press box where the Delbarton Digital Media Club began live-broadcasting games

this fall on the Green Wave Sports Network. Resurfacing Passarelli Track and returfing Cocoziello Field were also included in the comprehensive project, more tangible benefits from the very successful Brotherhood Campaign.

For fans, the new Field House features a fully equipped concession stand and indoor rest rooms. Players and their families appreciate the wide-angle views of the field, track and tennis courts from the Van Rooyen Reception Hall, an ideal space for team meetings, pregame dinners and post season celebrations and, of course, Delbarton’s Benedictine hospitality is reflected in the visiting team locker room and referees’ bathroom. “Our fans, families, and visiting teams can now be welcomed with the hospitality they deserve,” says Fr. Michael.

A New Chapter for Delbarton Athletics If you haven’t already done so, we invite you take a tour of the building on your next visit to campus. Admire the impressive trophy collection and check out the tribute plaques to the many donors whose generosity made this building possible. Finally, our dedicated athletes, who share the same work ethic and ethos with generations of Delbarton alumni, are blessed with a Field House that lets them focus more on what they do best: training and competing on behalf of the Green Wave.

Winter track sprinters now have an indoor track when weather prevents outdoor training. In the past, track athletes unrolled heavy rolls of portable padding to practice in Trinity Hall hallways.

After years of commuting to a commercial facility in Randolph, NJ, Delbarton wrestlers now practice in the Mike Grey ’06 and Pat Glory ’18 Wrestling Room.

Pizzo Family Field House Named for Beloved Patriarch Naming a building is a major step, and Ken and Meaghan Pizzo P’20,’22, instrumental in bringing this new building to campus, thought deeply before agreeing to put their family name on the North Field House, as the project was known during its 16-month construction phase. When the family’s patriarch Ken Pizzo Sr. passed away in 2021, the decision was made to name the new Delbarton building in his memory. “He was such a humble man, and we wanted to pay tribute to him,” explained Ken Jr. at the May 6 Dedication event with his wife Meaghan, and their children, Ken ’20, Dominic ’22, and Isabella by his side.

Student Mental Health in a Post-COVID World By Dr. Matt D’Urso ’96, PhD, Dean of Guidance

elbarton successfully navigated the COVID-19 pandemic by taking a student-centered approach. While respecting every state and federal mandate, each decision we made considered the impact on our young men first. ‘Listen’ is the first word in the Rule of St. Benedict, and our strategy focused on good communications. During the remote learning phase, students, parents, and faculty were surveyed regularly and our remote program was constantly tweaked. Boys described pandemic (and, later postpandemic) experiences of increased stress, loneliness, and isolation. The data was clear: Delbarton’s COVID-19 response must provide a continuum of student support and pay special attention to those students most likely to suffer from the impact of pandemic conditions. Fortunately, even before the pandemic, Delbarton had effective mental health supports in place.

Faculty and guidance counselors serve as mentors and keep a watchful eye over students’ progress. Deaneries and Middle School Mentors provide camaraderie with older and younger students. Teachers and counselors meet regularly to discuss academically at-risk students. Grade level guidance counselors are liaisons who collaborate with parents on areas of concern in school and at home, and Delbarton offers a referral network of evaluation and therapy services and takes an adaptive approach to students struggling with mental health issues. Regular surveys of students and parents, and grade-level webinars, ensure that all voices are heard about how to maintain

mental health wellness at Delbarton. In 2023, when the national emergency in response to the COVID-19 pandemic finally ended, we were confident that we had done a good job. That said, we know the consequences for our young people linger. The fact is, at any time in a typical American school, one in five students is experiencing social, emotional, and/or behavioral challenges. During the pandemic, CDC data confirmed that significant portions of U.S. high school students reported a worsening of their mental health; The pandemic experience essentially doubled depression and anxiety in American children and adolescents. While the need for mental health services has risen, availability of pediatric psychiatric and psychological providers remains limited, and in the absence of mental health care, problems worsen. At Delbarton, the effects of the pandemic were felt more powerfully by boys with pre-existing vulnerabilities such as learning challenges, life stressors, and prior emotional and behavioral difficulties. Research shows that ‘school connectedness’ — a sense of being cared for, supported, and belonging at school — has an important effect on students, especially during times of severe disruption. During COVID and beyond, we actively leveraged Delbarton’s unique strengths as a Benedictine Catholic community to prioritize school-wide social, emotional, and mental health.

Dr. Matt D’Urso 96 was hired as Director of Guidance in 2013. As an experienced licensed psychologist, he counsels adolescents and families dealing with mental health issues, and as a Delbarton alumnus, he also brings a unique perspective on the challenges and pressures our young men face.

After six months of remote learning, in fall 2020 maskwearing Delbarton students returned to a much-altered learning environment with plexiglass dividers and socially distanced lunches.

Delbarton Advisory Program In 2020, as a new source of student support, Delbarton launched the Advisory Program, an idea conceived by Headmaster Fr. Michael Tidd that facilitates a successful transition for all students in grades 9-12 by fostering a sense of community belonging. In the future, the advisory program will expand to include the middle school with a focus on team building and executive functioning. Today, every Delbarton freshman is assigned to a dozen-member advisory group led by a faculty or staff Advisor. Advisees remain with their Advisor through junior year and, in senior year, the College Guidance Counselors take over, meeting with students in their original Advisory groups and with the entire senior class. The Advisory Program provides built-in peer groups for new Delbarton students and daily access to one adult who knows them well and can offer advocacy and support. Many high school advisory programs focus solely on academics, but our program takes a more holistic approach by prioritizing each boy’s well-being beyond the classroom. All advisors and guidance counselors also complete mandatory certification in Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) and suicide awareness and prevention

to help them recognize mental health warning signs and equip them to assist young men in crisis and non-crisis situations. The success of our program is judged by whether the student feels a sense of belonging at Delbarton and has an authentic connection to his Advisor and fellow advisees. “I’ve made some good friends in my advisory group, and I always know I can call on my advisor for help whenever I need to,” wrote one junior in a recent school survey. While the Advisory program builds relationships, each year is distinct in nature. Freshman year focuses on the Hallmarks of a Benedictine School, including hospitality and community. Sophomores read the book Make Your Bed by Admiral William H. McRaven to help develop their personal identity, learn to set goals and how to recoup from reversals. Using the Profile of a Delbarton Graduate, juniors progress toward graduation and discuss topics like empathy and gratitude. Seniors address the transition to college, including how to manage college admissions stress and how to handle potential mental health issues in college.

Measuring Mental Health Voluntary mental health screening for Delbarton students in grades 7 through 12 is another initiative that we introduced in 2022. Just as youngsters are screened routinely for vision and physical health, a mental health screening helps us identify a student who is struggling. Using an online screening tool, boys are surveyed about their experiences with anxiety, depression, social stress, difficulties with self-control, hyperactivity and attention, and relationships with parents, peers, and teachers. Of the small percentage of Delbarton students who do experience mental health difficulties, some proactively self-report to their family or school. Others, however, are more reluctant to share their struggles. Some boys assume that their mental health challenges are typical for their age. Still other students may know that something is wrong but remain silent because they are not sure how to get help. Annual screening gives those students an opportunity to feel

comfortable admitting difficulties and helps them understand that Delbarton and their parents genuinely care about their mental health and, more importantly, want to help. We take a positive, proactive approach by offering our students help before small problems become big ones, and this voluntary screening helps us provide targeted support to students who need it most. The screening data also gives us a snapshot of student mental health which helps guide our guidance decision-making. We are gratified to report that screening data and anecdotal experience from classrooms and Advisory groups confirm that most of our young men are doing well most of the time, and Delbarton parents appreciate our focus on their sons’ mental health. Over the past ten years, Delbarton also added more staff members whose professional qualifications make them uniquely prepared to assist our students with their mental health needs. I was hired as Director of Guidance in 2013. As an experienced licensed psychologist, I counsel adolescents and families dealing with mental health issues, and as a Delbarton alumnus, I also bring a unique perspective on the challenges and pressures our young men face. In 2021, Learning Specialist Rob Flynn, L.D.T.C., joined the Guidance staff. Rob meets weekly with 30-40 students to provide academic support for underlying learning challenges. Each week during the school year he also shares teaching and learning advice with his fellow Delbarton teachers in his Monday Morsels email. In 2022, we also debuted a weekly Guidance e-

newsletter that is well-received by Delbarton families. What is Next? Looking ahead, this year Delbarton is introducing several initiatives to continue to build and sustain a mentally healthy community. Since a good friend is often the first person an adolescent confides in, plans are in place to offer students the opportunity to receive mental health first aid training to help them recognize and respond to a peer in crisis. Our Mental Health Club also features educational programming and roundtable discussions of mental health topics. In sum, Delbarton’s response to the mental health needs of our young men is characterized by a student-centered approach where our boys are at the forefront of each decision and every effort to improve their wellbeing. Our mission is to let no Delbarton student ‘fall through the cracks’ and every day we work hard, with great intention and care, to keep our young men mentally healthy.

Why I Teach By Caitlin Servilio, Delbarton Art Teacher

ome people know what they want to do for a career from the time they are a child, but I wasn’t one of them. When I think about my journey to teaching at Delbarton, the path is a bit circuitous, but I’m grateful my experiences led me here.

As far back as I can remember, I’ve loved art. My high school didn’t have an AP Studio Art course, but I created independent studies so that I could work on my own projects, like painting a mural on an old car hood my friends and I found in the woods. Contrary to the stereotype about artsy people, I’ve always been practical, so I felt torn about embracing a profession that everyone was eager to tell me would lead to being a “starving artist.” However, once at American University in DC, the siren call of the arts proved to be too strong, and I became an art major.

At AU, I had the opportunity to work with amazing professors like Deborah Kahn and Zoe Charlton. I loved living in DC, where the art museums are free; I sketched the elephants at the National Zoo and my friends in their dorms. After graduating, I moved back to NJ and completed a masters at Rutgers. I eventually landed at Chubb, the insurance company, where one of my main roles was to teach colleagues how to use various tech tools that Chubb was adopting. I’m glad I had that stint in the corporate world - I learned a lot about how to be a professional in the workplace and how to work with different personalities. I liked teaching and got over my long-standing fear of public speaking. However, during this time I didn’t have many chances to create art. A trip my sister and I took to Italy, where we spent days visiting

museums and cathedrals and sketching the art around us, opened my eyes to how much I was missing in my daily life. When Chubb was acquired by another company, layoffs loomed, and I realized I was at a crossroads. I could double down on this career, or completely switch gears. I decided I was going to try something new teaching art. I started NJ’s Alternate Route process, which allowed me to work towards a teaching certificate. This was a scary period because it was a decidedly impractical move. I left a steady job to be a long-term substitute for a semester. Teaching was incredibly difficult! I taught drawing, ceramics, and photography, but I was learning so much too. Every day I came home exhausted, then spent hours planning the next day and doing extra coursework towards my teaching certificate. Still, this cemented my determination to be a teacher. The day was much more exciting. I didn’t have to sit at a desk or stare at a screen, I got to help students create art! I was fortunate the next year to get a job at Delbarton. Of course, I was amazed at the beauty of the campus and art studios here, but more than that, I was warmly welcomed by my new colleagues. Everyone was very kind, especially my two fellow art teachers, Diane Lopez and Dom Rodi. I’ve been lucky to have great mentors all my life, but I couldn’t ask for better teachers to take me under their wing and show me the fantastic, rigorous art program they built.

I also love working with the art students here, who tend to be thoughtful, driven, and creative. It’s incredibly rewarding to see what the students are capable of - I push them to reach for new challenges in their paintings, drawings, and sculptures, but they also energize me. After getting into teaching, I felt more inspired in my personal art practice to make and exhibit work. Just this past summer, I completed my MFA from Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) - something I would not have been able to do without the support I received from Delbarton’s administration. It truly is a special place where students and faculty are encouraged to be ambitious and assist each other’s ambitions. In my own work, for the last few years, I’ve been working with cyanotypes, an alternative photography process that uses sun-sensitive chemicals to create

In 2018, Servilio invited artist Wes Sherman to visit her classes to talk about the life of a artist. With over 40 solo exhibitions across the county, Sherman has been a visiting artist at many universities, among them Temple, Rutgers, and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Servilio herself adeptly balances teaching at Delbarton with her second career as a working artist.

blue images. I college and paint these cyanotypes to create paper constructions about my interests and concerns, which include the environment, science fiction, and the future. I recently showed my work in a solo show at M Galleries PNA in Washington, NJ, and some pieces of mine will be in group shows in other galleries throughout the year. It’s not always easy to find time, but seeing the students create all day gets me excited to get into my studio!

Servilio’s art has evolved over the years. In 2017, in the Double Take exhibit at Delbarton, Servilio and artist Terri Fraser offered an artistic dialogue that took place over several months. Working side by side en plein air the artists depicted rural scenes from locations in central and northern New Jersey.

My experiences have made me realize that it is never too late to try something new or take a risk if it’s in service of following one’s calling. It was not easy for me to become an artist or teacher (often my own choices and fears were the biggest obstacle). However, it was worth it for me, and I hope that now, in my 8th year here, I can help my students towards their own artistic goals.

Servilio’s current Zone Era pieces encompass cyanotype, painting, and bookmaking to evoke an asteroid belt or the aftermath of an explosion, a dreamlike, blue-tinted world of low gravity where strangely vibrant vestiges of a previous society can be found clinging to floating rocks.

faculty update Jacqueline Conti Muratore is 2023 Delbarton Distinguished Educator In July, Mike Carr presented at the International Boys’ Schools Coalition’s (IBSC) annual conference in New Zealand about a special fly-fishing project he led with his sophomore advisory group.

On June 19, Dean of Admissions & Director of Financial Aid Dr. David Donovan was an organizer and main speaker for a 2023 Juneteenth event that involved residents, and over 80 community members met at the Chester Gazebo on Main Street for a program included music, prayers, history including a reading of the Granger Order with period costume, a Stand Up for the Other Pledge, and tributes by the Mayors of Chester and Chester Township. Dr. Matthew D’Urso ’96 was a panelist at the 2023 Praesidium Impact Summit, an annual conference focused on best practices for preventing sexual abuse of vulnerable populations. D’Urso, who co-led Delbarton’s initial Praesidium Accreditation in 2019 and Reaccreditation in 2022, presented on Delbarton’s efforts to achieve and maintain its accreditation while navigating challenges to implementing safe environment practices often seen in (continued on page 30)

Each year, Delbarton designates a Distinguished Educator who manifests qualities of personal and professional excellence that significantly impact the lives of young people. On May 31, the 2023 Delbarton Distinguished Educator Award was presented to Jacqueline Conti Muratore, the Assistant Director for Faculty, Curriculum, and Planning at Mount Saint Mary Academy in Watchung, NJ. Mrs. Muratore earned her B.A. magna cum laude from Cornell University, where she studied engineering and music, and received two master’s degrees in education from Columbia University, where she concentrated in educational technology and curriculum design. This past summer, science Department Chair Brian Theroux, Theology teacher Tracy Kessler and Assistant Headmaster for Academic Affairs Josh Hartle participated in the Science and Religion Initiative (SRI) Foundations Seminar at the University of Notre Dame’s McGrath Institute. The seminar was designed for helping teachers and administrators at Catholic high schools to bring faith and science into dialogue. Theroux and Hartle were inperson for the week at Notre Dame and Kessler participated remotely. Hartle reports, “Together, we worked with teachers from Catholic schools across the United States. The Seminar featured lectures by scientists, philosophers, and theologians; collaborative discussions and implementation workshops with talks/tracks in chemistry, physics/astronomy, biology, philosophy, and theology.” Also this past summer, Josh Hartle spent 10 days serving as a Table Leader for the AP Calculus exam ‘reading’. During this time, he was trained on scoring guidelines and on how to apply them correctly. (continued on page 31)

Fr. Michael Tidd Honored by Tri-County Scholarship Fund

On October 24, Delbarton Headmaster Fr. Michael Tidd, O.S.B. was honored at the Tri-County Scholarship Fund (TCSF) 42nd Annual Awards Dinner at the Legacy Castle in Pompton Plains. TCSF’s mission is to support students attending K-12 New Jersey Catholic schools and other values-based private schools from other faiths with financial aid, and the Tri-County Scholarship Fund has been changing the lives of children since 1981. To date, over 35,500 scholarships have been awarded for a total distribution of $36 million in financial aid to deserving young people. Fr. Michael has been a long-standing board member of TCSF and was honored for his life-long commitment to education, for creating opportunities for scholarship students, and for his profound understanding that exposure to educational excellence can transform a youngster’s life. Delbarton Athletic Director Dr. Tony Negrin introduced Fr. Michael at the event and lauded his impact as a leader, mentor and friend.

Five Delbarton Colleagues Retire in 2023 At the final Faculty and Staff Meeting on May 31, Fr. Michael presented parting gifts to five colleagues who retired in 2023. The person with the longest tenure was Diane Lopez, Chair of the Art Department, who started teaching at Delbarton in 1978. Attendance Officer and Receptionist Lorraine Petrolino was next. She had been on the job at Delbarton for twenty-four years. AP Macroeconomics teacher Tom Brady P’23 was instrumental in bringing a dozen Bloomberg terminals on campus as part of the Ryan Crane ’95 Business Center. Tom also initiated the DelEX externship program that, each June, introduces rising seniors to alumni and parents in various industries. Art teacher Dom Rodi was a valuable addition to the Delbarton art department and moderated the Archway yearbook which won second place in a national competition in 2022. Rodi continues to guide the Archway remotely in retirement. Finally, Hugo Gomez, a valued member of our housekeeping staff, retired after many years of committed service to Delbarton. (continued from page 30) He then led 12 ‘readers’ through 9 days of scoring AP Calculus free response questions. During this time, he worked with other high school teachers and college professors to ensure that each student was appropriately awarded all of the points they earned on the challenging AP Calculus exam. This was Hartle’s 13th year participating in the AP Calculus reading, and his 7th as

a table leader. AP Calculus teacher Patrick Finn also participated in the AP Calculus reading for the first time this year. “Go Green Wave AP Calculus,” says Hartle. Last spring, an article by Director of Library Services Kent Manno entitled Growing Old Gracefully with a Fishing Rod in Hand was published. The article details his early years fishing in the Bahamas and the

challenges of fishing with Multiple Sclerosis. The article was printed in the Mount Olive Chronicle, On the Water Magazine, and published online on TightLinesFishing.com and MS Canada. Sports Media Professionals Speak in Sports and Literature Class On September 25, students in Sports and Literature, a senior elective using sports literature as a microcosm for culture and the human condition, heard from two guest speakers, sports media professionals Kathryn Tappen and Conor Orr. Orr is a senior writer who covers NFL football for Sports Illustrated and Tappen is NBC Sports’ sideline reporter for Big Ten Saturday Night, a weekly primetime show. A Villa Walsh graduate, Tappen, daughter of Dick Tappen ’68, ran track and field and cross country at Rutgers where she was a Big East Academic All-Star. The

On the evening of August 25 at the annual Faculty Staff Picnic, Bruce Shatel and Connie Curnow received 2023 Regents’ Awards from the Delbarton Board of Regents that annually celebrate the professional careers of one faculty and one staff member. A long-standing Math teacher at Delbarton, Shatel is also an award-winning Green Wave Varsity Hockey Head Coach and Varsity Baseball Head Coach. Curnow is known as the woman with all the answers in her tripleplay role as Administrative Assistant - Admissions, Main Office Manager and Summer Programs Registrar. For many young Delbarton men and their families, she is their first point of

Middle States Reaccreditation Update The 32-person Middle States Planning Team met for a sixth time on October 4. Led by Internal Coordinators Dr. Jonathan Cote and Mr. Dan Szelingowski, the group finalized three objectives for our Middle States Plan for Growth and Improvement: Academic Integrity, Student Flourishing, and Staff Development & Formation. Next, the team submits the plan for technical review by the Middle States staff. The process culminates with a site visit by a visiting team of outside educators from March 10-13 to validate our work with a written report.

Delbarton Receives InterFaith Food Pantry Golden Apple Award

On October 16, Delbarton was awarded the Golden Apple Award by the InterFaith Food Pantry, a nonprofit that has improved the well-being of Morris County residents in need for over twenty-five years by providing access to food, education, and other resources. The award was recognized Delbarton’s 15 years of committed service to the InterFaith Food Pantry culminating each November with our Thanksgiving Food Drive. Delbarton Earns Platinum Distinction on AP School Honor Roll Delbarton was named to the Advanced Placement® Program (AP®) School Honor Roll, earning Platinum distinction, the highest level in a program. The Honor Roll recognizes achievement in three categories using criteria tracking the relationship between AP and college outcomes. Delbarton was an early adopter of the AP concept, offering AP courses since the late 1960s when they were new to American education. Headmaster Fr. Michael Tidd, O.S.B. recalls, “In fact, one of the signature parts of the AP History examinations, the Document-Based Question (DBQ), was developed at Delbarton between 1970 and 1973 by the late Abbot Giles Hayes, O.S.B., ’56, who at the time served on the College Board’s Development Committee for AP examinations.”

This year, Delbarton is offering seventy-eight sections of twenty-seven AP courses for students in grades 10 to 12 taught by thirty-one faculty members. The numbers vary from year to year depending on student interest, reports AP Coordinator Chris Cocozello.

Delbarton Athletics Livestreaming Debuts Welcome to the Green Wave Sports Network! Two members of the Delbarton Digital Media Club did the play-by play at the first home football game of the season on September 16. Coming on the heels of their first live stream broadcast experience at Red Bull Arena covering the big September 8 soccer game, Delbarton Soccer versus Seton Hall Prep game (3-3 double OT tie), Ben D’Avella '27 and Veer Dhall ’26 were on a roll. What could make the second broadcast of their Delbarton careers even more exciting? A come-from-behind OT win and meeting two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning on the sidelines. Zachary Wan ’28 Performs at Vatican with NJ Youth Chorus In late June and early July, Zachary Wan ’28 enjoyed an unforgettable tour in Italy with the New Jersey Youth Chorus (NJYC). The Chorus served as the choir-in-attendance at the Vatican Basilica di San Pietro afternoon Mass on June 29, the feast day of St. Peter and St. Paul. Zac packed a Delbarton flag and returned with some wonderful flag photos.

AP Art Exhibits Modern Classics Every year, each Studio Art student creates a large oil painting as a final project to demonstrate his brush and palette knife facility, and his color, light, form, and composition skills. The Modern Classics still life composition included an American flag and bust of Michelangelo’s David (wearing a tie and a pair of headphones). This fall in the FAC, twelve Class of 2024 AP Studio Arts students exhibited their still life pieces as a preview for a major exhibit of their AP portfolios opening exhibit on February 5. Dear Members of the Delbarton Family, Since its inception in 1939, Delbarton School has always sought to provide the best possible Benedictine Catholic education to its young men. Strong and deep relationships among Benedictine monks, lay teachers, coaches, current students, parents, and alumni have long been a hallmark of the Delbarton Experience. The boys know this instinctively; they simply call it “Brotherhood.” To sustain and advance the missions of both St. Mary’s Abbey and Delbarton School, we launched the Brotherhood Campaign on July 1, 2018. We are greatly pleased to share with you that, as you read this report, the Brotherhood Campaign surpassed its goal of $70 million on June 30 by reaching a total of $85,281,813! This monumental achievement was accomplished by the generous contributions and support of our dedicated alumni, parents, past parents and friends. The campaign’s impact is undeniable, as exemplified by the complete renewal of Vincent House (the Old Monastery), the opening of St. Benedict Hall (April 2021) and Pizzo Family Field House (April 2023), unprecedented achievements in the Delbarton Fund, and a near doubling of the School endowment for financial aid and staff development. We express our heartfelt gratitude to you, our outstanding alumni, parents, past parents and friends of Delbarton School, who have contributed to this transformative journey. Your commitment and generosity have been instrumental in driving our mission forward. The impact of the Benedictine witness of St. Mary’s Abbey and of a Delbarton School education resonates far beyond our campus, enriching not only our students’ lives, but also the global community at large. CRUSHING ITS $55 MILLION GOAL, BROTHERHOOD CAMPAIGN RAISES $85 MILLION During the five-year Brotherhood Campaign, Delbarton raised $85,281,813, an unprecedented accomplishment for St. Mary’s Abbey and Delbarton School! We began in 2018 with an ambitious goal of $55 million. Based on the Campaign’s initial success, in 2020 we stretched our goal to $70 million, then exceeded our target by raising $15 million over our expected goal. Factoring in Planned Gifts, Brotherhood Campaign Gifts and Pledges represent a combined valuation of $114,081,813. A team of sixty-five volunteers is at the heart of this success story. As Fr. Michael says, “These collective efforts have propelled the Brotherhood Campaign to unprecedented heights, underscoring the power of our community’s shared vision for the future.” Core campaign leaders led the way, and every sector of our community was all in. In 2021, we asked faculty and staff members to participate in the Delbarton Fund, a Campaign pillar. By 2022, 100% of Faculty and Staff was participating in the Fund, affirming the communal nature of the Brotherhood Campaign, and of Delbarton itself.

What tangible and intangible benefits did the Brotherhood Campaign deliver? For Delbarton School, the most obvious were two much-needed facilities constructed on campus during the five-year Campaign. St. Benedict Hall opened in April 2021, offering a modern library, media room, quiet studies, a guidance suite and collaborative meeting spaces. In April 2023, the Pizzo Family Field House was completed, offering a home base to Delbarton athletes and coaches in seven sports. For St. Mary’s Abbey, the Campaign funded a long-overdue renovation of Vincent House and increased annual support for St. Mary’s Abbey. The Brotherhood Campaign will add $24 million in new capital to the Delbarton School endowment, which positively impacts Financial Aid and increases Faculty and Staff salaries and professional development. Boosting the Endowment Fund creates a solid fiscal foundation for the School, another important Campaign pillar. This comprehensive Campaign, the largest in the history of either the Abbey or the School, stands as a testament to our commitment to equipping our students and staff with the skills and mindset required to confront the complexities of the world, and to fostering the growth in numbers and in community life of the Benedictine monastic community that is at the spiritual heart of Delbarton School.

ALUMNI SUPPORT: THE PETER L. O’NEILL ’59 ALUMNI CENTER On November 12, 2022, the Peter L. O’Neill ’59 Alumni Center was dedicated after over a year of renovations that transformed the ground floor of Old Main. Overseeing a team of designers and craftsmen, Pete’s wife Rebecca ‘Becky’ O’Neill was responsible for the stunning results: a magnificent new home for Delbarton alumni, including a series of beautiful event spaces destined to be enjoyed by generations of alumni and parents to come. Pete was a long-standing supporter of Delbarton during his lifetime, and especially of the Delbarton Alumni Association. He was a Class of 1959 class representative since the inception of the Alumni Class Representative program.

Old Main was Pete’s home during his Delbarton years. He had fond memories, made many lifelong friends, and attributed much of his eventual success in life to the education and formation he received as a boarding student in the 1950s. According to Becky, Pete would often say that Delbarton was his in loco parentis, giving him the skills and character necessary to achieve many of his later accomplishments. Pete passed away in 2019, and Becky wanted to honor his love of Delbarton by creating a special place for alumni to share in the camaraderie that meant so much to Pete. She more than succeeded, and on Homecoming Day, October 21, 2023, the rooms were filled with alumni and friends enjoying the Peter L. O’Neill ’59 Alumni Center. Somewhere, Pete O’Neill was smiling.

On March 2, 2020, as the pandemic closed the United States, Delbarton School broke ground on a 19,953 square foot addition to Trinity Hall, a leap of faith during an unprecedently challenging time. On April 13, 2021 we moved into St. Benedict Hall, a transformative building for academic and community life at Delbarton School. St. Benedict Hall enables important collaborative experiences and independent learning. Fr. Michael says, “We’re giving young men options to develop, in a structured environment, the skills of time management and executive decision-making that are so critical to success in college and in the professional world. And it all starts here in the new library in St. Benedict Hall.”

PIZZO FAMILY FIELD HOUSE The Pizzo Family Field House has been transformative for Green Wave Athletics. The 32,000 square foot building directly supports seven sports – Football, Lacrosse, Tennis, Wrestling, Cross-Country, Winter Track and Spring Track. Athletic Director Tony Negrin says, “Each day, nearly one hundred student-athletes arrive at the weight room to engage in their off-season workouts, led by our energetic Strength & Conditioning staff. The Field House enhances the development of our student-athletes, and strengthened the community component that allows all people to live out the mission of Delbarton School.”

TWO CAMPAIGN PILLARS The Delbarton Fund The Delbarton Fund is a resource that funds both anticipated and unexpected budget items each year. The Delbarton Fund provides approximately 12.5% of the annual operating budget, totaling about $6,600 per student per year.

The DELBARTON Endowment Endowments are permanent funds in which the principal is strategically invested and protected in

perpetuity. Annually, a portion of that income is spent as part of the school’s operating budget. Headmaster Fr. Michael Tidd says, “The Delbarton Endowment is critical to Delbarton’s financial health as we seek to offer high-quality, affordable, accessible Benedictine Catholic education to all qualified students who are admitted. Most importantly, the Delbarton endowment can give you confidence that our Benedictine Catholic educational vision and mission will endure well into the future.”

The Prior’s Report: Fr. Edward Seton Fittin ’82, O.S.B. In my role as Prior, I am responsible for the physical plant of the monastery buildings. The Vincent House renovations were a major undertaking for a 1939 building! The renovations have helped create spaces for 21st century monastic life that we hope and pray will sustain the community of St. Mary’s Abbey, attract new members, and offer hospitality to those who present themselves as guests. As Prior, I’m confident our physical plant is in better shape, providing efficient, comfortable and safe facilities for monks and visitors. With the abbot and monks, I remain grateful to our generous benefactors — past present and future — who make this a reality.

Vincent House Rises Again On June 13, 1975, Father Brian Clarke was elected seventh abbot of St. Mary’s Abbey. His first major challenge was the near destruction by fire of the old, circa 1939 monastery, now named ‘Vincent House’, on the night of December 12, 1975. The Abbey Chapter approved the reconstruction of Vincent House, and it was reoccupied in 1977. Forty-five years later, renovating Vincent House was an important Brotherhood Campaign goal.

A Flea in Her Ear On October 27, 28 and 29, the French farce A Flea in Her Ear was onstage in the FAC in a production produced by the Abbey Players and directed by Matt Corica. Written in 1907 by French playwright Georges Feydeau, this classic Belle Époque farce focuses on the main characters having a double: a middle-class businessman is indistinguishable from the hall porter of a shady hotel, and the two are comedically mistaken for each other to the bafflement of both. Hilarity ensued during this fast-paced Abbey Players production that wowed audiences at Delbarton this fall. Thank you to the talented visiting thespians from area schools who helped Delbarton actors bring the play to life.

Fall Music Concert

On October 19, the Fall Music Concert marked the start of a new year of music-making for Delbarton musicians with exciting new pieces and the promise of more performances to come. The Concert included pieces performed by the Beginner Band, Symphonic Orchestra, Frets and Keys, Middle School Chorus, Schola Cantorum, the Benedictones and the Delbarton Jazz Ensemble.

West Virginia In June, eight students, accompanied by faculty members Philip Schochet and Mike Fitzgerald, spent a week in West Virginia at Bethlehem Farm where they worked together with other high schoolers repairing windowsills, building a wheelchair ramp for an elderly farmer, and clearing the property of overgrown vegetation.

El Salvador Global Delbarton returned to El Salvador this summer for a week of service. Sixteen students worked on houses, delivered donations to schools and more. They also visited the Fr. Rutillio Grande Memorial, made tortillas, went boating and enjoyed getting to know the country of El Salvador and its people.

Kenya Our annual #GlobalDelbarton BEADS trip to Africa in June led by Brian Theroux included a lot of service projects at Benedictine schools and some exploration of Kenya. From hiking around Mount Longonot to standing at the Equator, our young men brought the Green Wave spirit with them. They answered the call to serve and gained a new perspective on the rich heritage of the Kenyan culture.

In June, seven Italian language students participated in the twoweek Rome Study program, spending mornings in intensive Italian classes taught by Trinity College professors, then touring the Eternal City each afternoon. Accompanied by the indomitable Mike Del Guercio, and accompanied by practiced gastronome and Italophile Coach Bryan Stoll, the boys explored Rome, and feasted on the Italian Experience through organized tours, cooking classes, and experiential learning exercises that involved practicing their linguistic skills in real life settings.

STEM REPORT STEM REPORT STEM REPORT STEM REPORT Ian Grenda ’26 is NJ Governor’s STEM Scholar Delbarton junior Ian Grenda ’25 was named a NJ Governor’s STEM Scholar, a program that recognizes New Jersey’s top high school and college students committed to being the future of the state’s STEM workforce and economy. Established by the Research & Development Council of NJ, the program is also supported by some of the state’s top researchers and STEM professionals. The Governor’s STEM Scholars provides highachieving New Jersey STEM students in grades 10 through doctoral level with an introduction to the state’s vast STEM economy to retain that talent in the state. Scholars work with STEM professionals, have access to internships, and connect with Research & Development executives. All Governor’s STEM Scholars participate in a

research/engineering design project led by college-level Scholars. Ian has a passion for STEM and loves to explore the different branches of science. At Delbarton, he serves as a leader of the Chemistry Club and Research and Science Club. He is also a regional director for the Historia Project, an organization that teaches students about the benefits of science, technology, engineering and math by sending emissaries like Ian to introduce STEM to youngsters of all ages. During his recent internship at Benitec Biopharma Inc., Ian worked with scientists conducting cancer research, analyzed Benitec’s batch records, and learned about the BB-301 Drug recently approved by the FDA for clinical trials. In addition to his interest in STEM-related topics, Ian competes in baseball and soccer and plays the clarinet in the Delbarton Orchestra.

Football Program Hosts 3rd Annual Golf Outing

On July 17, the Green Wave Football Program hosted its Third Annual Golf Outing at Spring Brook Country Club in Morristown. A robust turnout of 70+ golfers, with another 50+ football alumni and current parents, joined the event or a wonderful day of golf followed by a dinner reception. Participation came from a broad range of classes, with football alums from the 1960’s all the way up to our

most recent graduates. Football Head Coach Brian Bowers says, “the goal of connecting and building relationships through Delbarton football remains incredibly strong, and the camaraderie witnessed at the golf outing was a great example of this.” Rising senior football players John Riley ’24, Dallas Hurley ’24, Jake Macce ’24 and Ryan Cregan ’24 thanked attendees for coming out for Delbarton Football

and lauded the new Pizzo Family Field House which players put to good use during the summer program. Bowers was grateful for the support of football alumni, parents and boosters and says, “With a talented group returning for the 2023 season, the excitement is sky high as the players eagerly look forward to the start of the season.”

Racing in five events, Alexy left Japan with a bronze, three silver medals and a gold in his first World Championship appearance.

The varsity baseball team, coached by Bruce Shatel, was once again a dominating team on the diamond, combining a strong core group of returning starters with a very promising group of newcomers. The Green Wave finished 24-5, winning the Morris County Tournament and an appearance in the non-public semifinal. After returning from a very busy spring training trip to Florida, the team opened the season with a challenging April schedule, featuring a matchup with highly ranked Ranney as part of a doubleheader with Middletown South. Delbarton defeated Ranney 7-6 in an exciting game that saw Delbarton overcome a 6-3 deficit, improving to 6-2. Highly touted freshman Sal Garcia ’26 (Duke) tied the game

with a 3-run home run, leading to a 7-6 comeback victory. The end of April would feature a matchup of #1 Bergen Catholic vs. #2 Delbarton. The Green Wave would escape with a 3-2 victory, to take over the #1 ranking in New Jersey. Earning a #1 seed in the Morris County Tournament, the Green Wave would outscore Jefferson and Mendham 17-2, before shutting out Chatham 3-0 in the semifinal, earning another trip to the county final. Unlike the past three championships where the Green Wave only scored seven runs combined, Delbarton scored early and often, defeating West Morris 9-1. In the NJSIAA Non-Public A North Tournament, Delbarton would reach the semifinals with a win over DePaul Catholic, before dropping another heartbreaker to eventual Non Public Champion Don Bosco 2-1. Delbarton’s rotation including Dill (2nd team, all-state), Saccento and Christian Zebrowski ’24 dominated on the mound while

its dangerous lineup including Garcia, Jack Harley ’24 (Virginia Tech), Kevin Hager ’23 (Cornell), Marco Maselli ’23 (Holy Cross), Rob Russo ’23 (Villanova Football), Griffin Mills ’23 (Northwestern) and Matt Dahl ’23 (Haverford) anchored the high-scoring offense. While the team graduates many of its starters, the Green Wave will return a solid group of returning players next year to Fleury Field.

Lacrosse

Delbarton Lacrosse, coached by Matt Kovachik, had a tremendously successful season at Cocoziello Field, finishing 205, winning the Morris County Tournament and bringing home the 2023 NJSIAA Non-Public A championship. The Green Wave were one of the top lacrosse programs in the state this season, dropping four of its five losses to teams outside of New Jersey. Despite these losses, the Green Wave played hard every game this year, defeating Chatham, Mountain Lakes, Summit, Westfield and St. Augustine Prep, along the way. The team’s lone NJ loss was an 11-10 overtime decision to Seton Hall Prep on May 11, which would not be the last time these two teams played.

After defeating Roxbury, Madison and Randolph the Green Wave faced a familiar opponent in Mountain Lakes once again at Mt. Olive High School in the Morris County Final. Led by four goals from tournament MVP Willie Doyle ’24, Delbarton scored early and often, while goalie Aidan Troy ’23 (Penn) shut down the Lakers offense all night long. The Green Wave defense, anchored by Jake Melchonni ’23 (Villanova), Julian Radossich ’23 (Fairfield) and Corbin Lukanski ’23 (Bucknell) was spectacular all night, allowing just 2 goals on six shots. In the state tournament, Delbarton was on a mission to not only reach the state final once again, but to bring the trophy back to Mendham Road.

SPRING ACTION

After defeating Donovan Catholic and St. Joseph’s, Delbarton played one of its best games of the season, defeating highly ranked Don Bosco 12-1 in the non-public semifinal, setting up a rematch between Delbarton and Seton Hall Prep. Playing on a very hot and muggy Saturday afternoon in East Brunswick, the Pirates and Green Wave battled for almost seven quarters before a champion was crowned. A 4-4 halftime lead would turn into an 8-4 Pirates lead heading into the 4th quarter. Delbarton’s seniors would not go down without a fight, anchoring a 4-goal

turnaround, led by Gray Doyle ’23 (Bates), Nick Faccone ’23 (Lafayette) and sophomore Asher Testa ’25 would tie the game at 8-8 with only 2.5 seconds left. Neither team scored in the first or second overtime, leading to a third overtime faceoff. There, Faccone scored one of the biggest goals in Delbarton School history, winning the faceoff and taking it all the way to the net, ripping a shot past the goalie to clinch the Non-Public A title for the Green Wave. The Green Wave Golf team, coached by Sean Flanagan, had one of its best seasons ever in 2023, finishing 15-2 and winning the NJAC Championship. The team opened the season in dominating fashion, winning by nine or more strokes in seven straight matches. On April 19, the boys defeated rival Seton Hall Prep 160-165, capped off by coach

Flanagan’s hole-in-one while playing with the Pirates coach! A second-place finish at the State Sectional helped qualify the Green Wave for the Tournament of Champions on May 15, where Tyler Lee ’23 (Cal) would shoot a 2-under 70 and clinch his first TOC title on the first playoff hole. Lee joins Will Voetsch ’15 as the

only two Green Wave golfers to ever win the Tournament of Champions. The team finished 2nd overall as well at Raritan Valley Country Club. Capping off the season, the Green Wave would clinch the 2023 NJAC Championship, shooting a combined 306, seven strokes better than second-place Montville. Tyler Lee was named NJ.com Golfer of the Year, earning firstteam, all-state honors as well. Freshman Grady Gore ’26 earned first-team, all-conference honors, while Jake Kurtzman ’25 and JM Dziadzio ’24 earned second team honors. Will Kramer ’25 would earn honorable mention honors to round out a great season for the Green Wave golfers.

Track AND FIELD

The 2023 Spring Track season was one to remember. Led by head coach Andrew Sherwood and his team of experienced assistant coaches, the team saw strong performances across every discipline including throws, jumps, sprints, and distance. This complete team was able to capture the NJAC United Division title for the 8th year in a row, 2nd place finishes at the Morris County Relay and Morris County championships, and a 3rd place finish in the Non-Public A North sectional. The team also ran to a 3rd place finish in the Championships of America Distance Medley Relay at the Penn Relays.

SPRING ACTION

Though the performances were strong, the coaches were most proud of the team’s overall culture and sense of brotherhood felt at practice every day. This culture led to new school records in 4x800, 100m dash, 1600m, and 3200m. It also led to a slew of top 3 performances in the throwing and jumps events, most notably in shot put, discus, and pole vault. The returning cast for next year can continue to grow the culture of the team and perform at a high level at the county, state, and national level.

Tennis The 2023 Delbarton Tennis team, led by John Thompson, enjoyed its new home on the north tennis courts, finishing 20-6, winning its 20th Morris County title in the past 21 years. The team opened the season with a 4-1 record, before hosting the annual Bryan Bennett Tournament. The highlight of the regular season was a first place finish in the annual Episcopal Academy Doubles Tournament. The tournament featured 16 teams from all over the Northeast, including New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Washington, D.C. and more. After two days of beautiful weather and intense tennis play, the Green Wave came out victorious, narrowly defeating Sidwell and Friends 24-22 for Delbarton’s first ever tournament title. On May 22, The Green Wave narrowly defeated second place Chatham 22-20 to clinch the Morris County Championship. With a rain delayed final being played on Monday, the Green Wave held a very small lead, needing one victory against Chatham to clinch the title. Second singles Hudson Bonetti

defeated Owen Kilmer of Mendham 6-3, 7-5 in a big win for Delbarton, at the time giving the Green Wave a guaranteed tie of the county title. Both doubles teams would lose to Chatham, but Third Singles Jack Gibbons ’24 would clinch the victory for the Green Wave with a gutsy 6-4, 6-2 win over Chatham, giving Delbarton the county title. The Green Wave would make it to the Non Public Semifinal, before losing to Newark Academy in the semifinal round. Senior James Lian ’23 (Brown) would earn the #1 seed in the state individual tournament, while the doubles team of Arjun Bobba ’23 and Anthony Reale ’23 made it to the state doubles quarterfinal round. The Delbarton Rugby team, led by first-year coach John MajanoLopez, kicked-off the 2023 season against Fordham Prep where Delbarton came home with the 7-0 win. For the first time since 2017, Delbarton hosted Saint Mary’s from Toronto, Canada. Delbarton walked away with the narrow 1716 victory at South Gate Field. After the match, both teams

enjoyed a meal together and look forward to continuing the tradition of international matches. After a long-needed break from games, the team began to prepare for a playoff push, battling two main rivals, CBA and St. Augustine. St. Augustine was the battle of the season with both teams playing hard, but at the end of the day the Hermits

walked away with the 17-12 victory over Delbarton. The following week the season ended in a close match against CBA at home with a final score of 24-22. Despite the losing record, the team is excited for the program to grow and expand as both new players join the roster and new schools form teams in NJ.

Athletes of Delbarton: Will Kramer ’25 Junior Will Kramer ’25 is an allconference honorable mention Green Wave golfer and plays varsity squash. Will typically spends his time playing golf but this year, encouraged by friends, he dropped his normal routine and joined the Delbarton varsity football team that was in desperate need of a kicker. That’s right — a kicker! “I started kicking…maybe 5 or 6 years ago,” says Kramer. “I would kick the football at my local field every time I went there for a pickup football game. From there, I would kick in my backyard when I was bored which I did for years.” On August 16, Will Kramer began his football journey having never

played organized football, never mind kicking field goals. Rookie coach Ross Martin, who played multiple seasons for the Cleveland Browns and New York Jets, taught Will his kicking technique. Martin also happens to hold Duke University’s record for most field goals, extra points and total points, making 83% of his collegiate field goal attempts. So far this season, Kramer has hit all seventeen of his extra-point kicks and, on September 30, made his first field goal, a 41-yard blast to end of the first half vs. Paramus Catholic.

fields, you tend to become very nervous and miss,” explains Kramer. “I think that the mental side of golf is very similar to kicking in that both mental games are crucial to good results. I tend to not overthink and just kick the ball calmly and as confident as I would in golf.” He credits Head Coach Brian Bowers and Coach Gerry Gallagher for building his confidence in his kicking abilities. Of his 41-yard field goal, Kramer says he knew he could hit the field goal, all it took was trusting his technique. Once it went through the uprights, the entire team was there to celebrate him.

Bishop Sweeney Visits Delbarton On September 12, Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney of the Diocese of Paterson celebrated the Mass of the Holy Spirit in the Abbey Church with the entire school community. His homily was dedicated to the many heroes of September 11, 2001 and their ‘courage, self-sacrifice, bravery, generosity and leadership’. Fr. Michael presented Bishop Sweeney with a donation in his honor from Delbarton to the Tri-County Scholarship Fund. After Mass, Bishop Sweeney spent time with Student Body President Abdiel Perde ’24 and this year’s student leaders. Bishop Sweeney is pictured here with Prior Edward Seton Fittin ’82, O.S.B., Abbot Jonathan Licari, O.S.B. and Headmaster Fr. Michael Tidd, O.S.B. On August 16, Prior Edward Seton Fittin was the celebrant at Mallinckrodt Convent, Mendham (the Sisters of Christian Charity) where he witnessed the first profession of a novice. Networking in NYC On May 23, Delbarton alumni gathered at Manhattan’s Tiro a Segno for the annual networking event sponsored by Headmaster Fr. Michael Tidd O.S.B. and the Alumni Association. Tiro a Segno is a private club on MacDougal Street and the oldest Italian heritage organization in the United States. The Carter Cup The 21st annual Carter Cup – the Metropolitan Golf Association’s Junior Stroke Play Championship – was held at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, NJ on August 2. The invitational is named in memory of Michael P. Carter ’00, an accomplished junior player and standout Green Wave golf team member who died in a car accident in 2002. Michael was a junior club champion at Baltusrol and Winged Foot Golf Club and a promising player on the Penn State golf team. The Carter Cup features 46 top junior golfers from the metropolitan area playing 36 holes in the summer heat on Baltusrol’s two championship course – a rigorous mental and physical endurance test. This year, Delbarton was represented by Green Wave golfer Tyler Lee ’23. Lee is pictured below with Mary Lou Carter P’00 and Michael’s sisters. Barnes Blake of Westfield, New Jersey took home the trophy at this year’s Carter Cup and is the first Baltusrol member to win the Carter Cup. He also set a new Carter Cup record – 11-under par enroute to the eight-shot win.

Director of the Delbarton Fund and Advancement Operations Maria Van Kirk P’26 presented The Headmaster’s Cup to the Class of 2008 for its impressive 72.73% participation. The Class of 1948 is an Emeritus Winner for 100% participation. The Rev. Kenneth Mayer Award was presented to the Class of 2008, for the most donors in any class. Eighty members of the class donated to the Delbarton Fund in 2022, and Tim Soulas ’08 accepted both awards on behalf of his classmates.

The Mayor of Mayors Paul Muir ’94 has served 9 years as Mayor of Bethlehem Township, NJ and, in April 2023, was sworn in as President of the New Jersey Conference of Mayors. The NJCM is the nation’s largest and oldest Mayors Association. Paul will lead New Jersey Mayors as they advocate for favorable policy on the Federal and State level. Paul will be spending more time in Trenton and welcomes fellow alumni to visit his office on West State Street.

Delbarton Iron Men On September 10, Delbarton Director of Guidance Dr. Matt D’Urso ’96 participated in the IRONMAN 70.3 Atlantic City. Joining him in the competition were teacher and Delbarton Swim Head Coach Pat Savidge and Delbarton dad Scott Cirillo P’23. All

three completed a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike course, and a 13.1-mile run to the finish line. What a way to represent Delbarton’s Succisa Virescit spirit, gentlemen — we salute our three Delbarton Iron Men.

Curt Ritter ’89 Chairs 8th Annual Out of the Darkness Walk

1982 Classmates Meet in Cleveland On September 23, Jim Petrucci ’82, P’10,’25 was in Cleveland and caught up with his classmate Jim Rosenhaus ’82 on the field at batting practice before the Cleveland Guardians vs. Baltimore Orioles game. Rosenhaus, the brother of Director of Senior Guidance Mike Rosenhaus ’80, is a radio announcer for the Cleveland Guardians MLB team. Final score: Orioles 2, Guardians 1.

Curt Ritter ’89 chaired the 8th annual Out of the Darkness Walk in Morris County that raises funds for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Ritter founded the event which raised over $96,000 bringing its eight-year total to more than $600,000. As part of the publicity efforts, Ritter was interviewed by CBS News and thanks all who participated to support this important cause. Separately, this Thanksgiving, his team will host the 15th Annual Chatham Turkey Trot, which raises funds for diabetes research and education, and first responders. The race now attracts over 1,000 people from throughout Morris County and, in fifteen years, has raised over $250,000.

Monsignor McCarren ’83 installed as Seminary Rector and University Dean On September 10, Cardinal Joseph Tobin, C.Ss.R. presided at the Installation Mass of Monsignor Gerard H. McCarren ’83 as the new rector the seminary and dean of theology at Seton Hall University. A Delbarton alumnus, Monsignor McCarren earned a B.A. from Yale University with majors in History and in Philosophy (Psychology track), an M.Div. from Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology, and an S.T.L. and an S.T.D. in Systematic Theology from The Catholic University of America. In addition to teaching in the areas of Liturgy and Sacraments and having served as Spiritual Director since 2004, Monsignor McCarren has taught and provided spiritual direction for the summer seminarian programs of the Institute for Priestly Formation, Omaha, NE.

Dick Tappen ’68 Audits Sports and Literature Class On September 25, students in the Sports and Literature class heard from two guest speakers, including Kathryn Tappen, NBC Sports sideline reporter for Big Ten Saturday Night, a primetime Big Ten Football game airing each week on NBC. Jack Szymanski ’21 and the Notre Dame Irish Guards On September 23, Jack Szymanski ’21, pictured bottom row, far right, and fellow members of the Notre Dame Irish Guard led the University of Notre Dame’s Band of the Fighting Irish onto the field at the Notre Dame versus Ohio State home game in South Bend, IN. The Guard is considered by some to be one of the integral parts in the pageantry, lore, and legend of Notre Dame football. While the final score did not go Notre Dame’s way – Ohio State scored the winning touchdown in the last minute of the game — watching his son march in with the Guard ‘put a lump in my throat’ later wrote his father Michael who shared this photo with us.

Kurt Krauss ’81 is Morris County Lawyer of the Year Delbarton congratulates alumnus and former Alumni Association President Kurt Krauss ’81, P’19 who was recognized as 2022 Professional Lawyer of the Year by the Morris County Bar Association. The award is presented to “lawyers respected by their colleagues for their character, competence and exemplary professional behavior.” A Wilson Elser press release describes Krauss as, “A seasoned litigator, Kurt often acts as a sounding board for colleagues who appreciate the depth and breadth of his knowledge and his willingness to explore all the possibilities.” The Delbarton community salutes Kurt Krauss on this outstanding recognition by his peers.

2023 MARKED THE 50TH REUNION FOR D ELBARTON CLASS OF 1973, a golden anniversary for young men who graduated the year the United States ended its participation in the Vietnam War. Times were different: coaches smoked on the sidelines, football and soccer teams had cheerleaders, long hair and bellbottom pants were in. All 1973 Archway photography was printed in black and white, and the iconic Robert Frost poem The Road Not Taken was prominently featured on page one: “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I – I took the one less traveled by, and that had made all the difference.” The 1973 Archway Team was led by Editors in Chief Bill Quinn ’73 and Brian Regan ’73. Together with their yearbook team, they produced a handsome book with a muted sepia-toned cover picturing Old Main from the Formal Garden. The issue was dedicated to the memory of Fr. Francis O’Connell who served as Headmaster of Delbarton School from 1967-1972.
