sotheby’s -

a brand steeped in history The Sotheby’s brand is renowned worldwide for offering its clientele the opportunity to acquire or sell the rarest of treasures.

FOUNDED IN 1744 in the heart of London on New Bond Street, Sotheby’s is the oldest and largest internationally recognised firm of fine art auctioneers in the world with a global network of offices in 90 locations over 40 countries and a turnover in excess of $4 billion. Its founder Samuel Baker was an entrepreneur, occasional publisher and successful bookseller who held his first auction under his own name on March 11, 1744, which fetched £826. For more than a century, Baker and his successors were to handle all of the great libraries sold at auction including those of the Earls of Sunderland, Hopetoun and Pembroke and the Dukes of Devonshire, York and Buckingham. Following Napoleon’s death, he sold the books he had taken into exile to St Helena – the final lot was the Emperor’s tortoiseshell-and-gold walking stick. The London auction house continued to build a revered tradition of uniting collectors with world-class works of art and marketing the world's most cherished possessions — a tradition that continues, more than two centuries later, to provide authentic knowledge comparable to none.

In 1842 John Wilkinson, the firm’s senior accountant, became a partner and when the last of the Sotheby family died in 1861, Wilkinson took over as head of the business. Three years later he promoted Edward Grose Hodge and restyled the company to Sotheby, Wilkinson and Hodge, the name it carried until 1924. Following Hodge’s death in 1907, his son Tom brought in new associates Montague Barlow, a barrister and MP, Felix Warre, a banker, and Geoffrey Hobson, a young Foreign Office official. Their first great success was the sale of the Huth library, which was dispersed over 12 sales from 1911 to 1922 and netted £300,000.

Operating alongside the famous auction house, the Sotheby's International Realty® brand was created in 1976. Founded on the same commitment to exceptional service that characterised the Sotheby's Auction House for more than two centuries...

In 1767 Baker went into partnership with George Leigh. Leigh was a natural auctioneer with an actor’s sense of timing. His ivory hammer is still on display at Sotheby’s London galleries.

Their second triumph during the summer of 1917 was to move the company’s premises from Wellington Street – off the Strand – to 34-35 New Bond Street in Mayfair. This took Sotheby’s from the heart of the book world to the hub of the art world.

On Baker’s death in 1778, his estate was divided between Leigh and Baker’s nephew John Sotheby, whose family remained involved in the business for more than 80 years. During that time, the company extended its role to take in the sale of prints, coins, medals and antiquities.

The post war years, under the leadership of Chairman Peter Wilson, a pre-war trainee in the furniture department, saw Sotheby’s entering a new era, opening an Impressionist and Modern art department in the mid-1950s that wooed private buyers as well as trade.

6

The milestones that followed during the late1950s and 1960s included the successful auction of the Weinberg Collection in 1957 – viewed by Queen Elizabeth II. This was eclipsed the following year by the landmark sale of the Goldschmidt Collection of seven Impressionist masterworks. Other high-profile consignments, including Rubens’ The Adoration of the Magi and Somerset Maugham’s Impressionist collection (including a Tahitian shack door decorated by Gauguin) allowed Sotheby’s to redefine the presentation and potential of art auctions forever. Having already opened an office in New York, in 1964 Sotheby’s bought Parke-Bernet, America’s largest fine art auction house. This launched a program of expansion with the company becoming the first international auction house to conduct sales in Hong Kong (1973), Russia (1988), India (1992) and France (2001), and the first to have a presence in China (2012). In 1977 the company went public (with shares over-subscribed by 26 times). Wilson retired in 1980 and with his sudden death in 1983 an era came to a close. However, a new chapter began when Alfred Taubman acquired the company that autumn, taking it once again back into private hands. New flagship salerooms opened in New York and Sotheby’s went public again in 1988, listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Meanwhile, Sotheby's established offices and opened under licence in Australia in 1983, following the Sotheby's model of holding regular auctions in the areas of fine art, fine furniture and decorative arts, and jewellery. Today, Sotheby's Australia conducts auctions regularly in both Melbourne and Sydney. Specialist sales include Australian and International Art, Aboriginal Art, Fine Asian, Australian and European Arts and Design and Jewels. In all of these areas Sotheby's Australia is the premium auctionhouse within Australia, combining traditional expertise with integrity and inventiveness. Operating alongside the famous auction house, the Sotheby's International Realty® brand was created in 1976. Founded on the same commitment to exceptional service that characterised the Sotheby's Auction House for

more than two centuries, Sotheby’s International Realty has become known around the world for the distinctive properties it represents. The collaboration between realty and auction fuses a unique combination of exclusive marketing efforts that provides targeted exposure to a coveted and highly influential audience. It is logical to expect that a company that deals exclusively with objects d’art as varied as rarest-ofthe-rare automobiles, artwork (both contemporary and old masters), jewellery, watches and wine, should make the transition to premium property, projects and developments. In 2004 Sotheby's entered into a long-term strategic alliance with Realogy Holdings Corp, a global leader in real estate franchising and provider of real estate brokerage, relocation and settlement services. The agreement provided for the licensing of the Sotheby's International Realty name and the brand began offering membership in its franchise system to select real estate brokerage companies. Associates are constantly interacting and meeting new peers through numerous events hosted by its corporate network and the Sotheby’s Auction House. Should a Queensland Sotheby’s International Realty associate have a client looking for a residence in New Zealand, the US or Hong Kong, it is highly likely the relationships with professionals in these markets have already been forged.

sotheby’s strong results for first 18 months

8

Queensland Sotheby’s International Realty has made more than $150 million in property sales throughout Queensland since it opened its doors just over 18 months ago. ITS FIRST OFFICE began operations in January 2016 at Main Beach on the Gold Coast but its rapid success meant further expansion was not far away. It is now making deep forays into the Brisbane market having opened offices in Ascot and Paddington with plans to add to these not far off. Powerhouse couple Paul and Deanne Arthur, who acquired the Queensland licensing for Sotheby’s, have grown the business to more than 35 staff across the three offices in just a little over 18 months.

like a boxing match. One was from Dubai and the other from Tokyo. That property sold under the hammer setting a suburban record by more than $600,000. We expected to set a record but that was definitely a very strong result.” He said the company was seeing continuing strong interest from overseas buyers, not only from China but also Taiwan, India and South Africa, as well as plenty from New Zealand. Sydney and Melbourne buyers were also seeking property in the Southeast Queensland corner

In fact, the husband-and-wife team’s exceptional business acumen has ensured that in a true real estate coup, Sotheby’s has recently been appointed to sell the former nine-bedroom mansion of Christopher and Pixie Skase known as Bromley.

“There is strong appeal in Sotheby’s because of our accessibility to a network of high-end clients locally, nationally and internationally,” Mr Arthur Paul said. Situated at 36 Dixon Terrace, Hamilton, and built by the disgraced troubled businessman in 1988, the property could become one of the highest sales achieved in the Brisbane market. Recent high-end Sotheby’s sales include a $4.675 million property at Kangaroo Point in October, a $3.9 million home in Port Douglas in May and several more topping the $3 million mark over the past 12 months throughout the state. “There is strong appeal in Sotheby’s because of our accessibility to a network of high-end clients locally, nationally and internationally,” Mr Arthur said. “And I think that really sets us apart in the real estate business in Queensland. “A great example of this was the recent auction of a property in Wilston, Brisbane, where the two bidders went head to head … it was a bit

thanks to its “great affordability and fantastic value for money”. “We’ve had our own strong results in the property market in the first two quarters of this year and we are seeing similar results in other key agencies,” Mr Arthur said. “Certainly the luxury end of the real estate market in the state is alive and well. “We’ve got some exceptional properties that are under contract and due to sell in the next 30 to 45 days.” And these results have meant the couple are in a position for make further forays into what Mr Arthur describes as “a very bullish market” with plans to open six more offices throughout the state within the next 12 months. Two will be based in Brisbane, two on the Gold Coast – one to service the north, the other the south as far as Byron Bay – one in Port Douglas and another in the Whitsundays. “We are already in discussions with some notable agents and agencies in the area,” Mr Arthur said. “There’s definitiely a strong appetite for highend property and we wanted to bring Sotheby’s to Queensland to cater to this. “Having three office locations – and with plans for expansion – means we are also definitely attracting a lot of the state’s finest properties.” For a man that was on the verge of retirement, Mr Arthur said he had never worked harder. “I’m very involved in the business, as is my wife, Deanne. I’m in the trenches, so to speak and I’m having a lot of fun doing it.”

sotheby’s projects and developments key player in southeast qld After a successful entry into the Queensland market for Sotheby’s International Realty, the fully integrated projects team is taking on some of the state’s leading developments.

“Ensuring we have the right team in place to complement the Sotheby’s brand has contributed to our success in securing the exclusive listings of some of Brisbane and the Gold Coast’s most prestigious developments,” Mr Pancur said. “This year alone we have secured more than half a billion dollars of listings and our goal is to secure $1 billion dollars within the first 18 months of operation.” Mr Pancur’s prediction might not be far off the mark with some of the region’s largest developers looking to Sotheby’s and its international affiliates to secure pre-construction sales. Projects including Wanda Group’s Jewel, which is set to take centrestage within the Gold Coast’s burgeoning coastal skyline, and Tarcoola River Residences, boutique apartments overlooking main river on Surfers Paradise’s Chevron Island, will certainly contribute to achieving this objective. “We have just commenced marketing Tower Three of Jewel and have already had enquiries from around the world,” Mr Pancur said. Whilst Mr Pancur might be thinking big for Queensland Sotheby’s Projects and Developments, his approach to achieving his goal remains strategic. “The Sotheby’s brand represents luxury and elegance and we are focused on selecting the right projects to represent, not every project,” he said. “We ensure that anything we are taking to market under the Sotheby’s name aligns with our own image, so this means developments which represent prestige and quality.”

SINCE ITS INCEPTION in November 2016, Queensland Sotheby’s International Realty’s Projects and Developments division has listed more than $500 million worth of development property including 15 pre-construction developments in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast. Projects and Developments managing director Patrick Pancur said with so much development activity in Southeast Queensland, it was inevitable Sotheby’s would achieve such growth.

12

This drive for synergy between developer and marketing agent is something that seems to be reciprocated by the developer. Other projects Mr Pancur’s team is marketing include Ascot Green, featuring timeless architectural design inspired by the romance of equine racing sitting alongside the renowned Ascot racecourse, and Sanbano in Coolangatta, which has been designed for those with an appreciation for quality, craftsmanship, style and exclusivity. With a career in development and construction spanning more than 16 years, Mr Pancur is uniquely qualified to lead the Projects and Developments division for Queensland Sotheby’s International Realty. Managing director Paul Arthur certainly thinks so.

Tarcoola River Residences. Comprising 17 spacious, boutique apartments overlooking the main river, Tarcoola River Residences offers residents a truly opulent lifestyle.

TARCOOLA’S EXCLUSIVE MAIN RIVER RESIDENCES

Exquisitely designed, the apartments exude an unparalleled sense of spaciousness and grandeur. With high ceilings throughout and full-height glazing, there is little to impede the mesmerising views of the pristine waterway that flows past the door – or of the dazzling Surfers Paradise skyline.

A bold expression of timeless elegance and glamour, Sanbano epitomises a new level of bespoke luxury. Every indulgence is accommodated for, from the private residents’ restaurant to the exquisite selection of rich furnishings and textiles sourced or crafted exclusively for each home.

“Patrick is not your average real estate agent which is why he is a good fit for the Sotheby’s brand,” Mr Arthur said. “He has a thorough understanding of the developer’s point of view both in commercial and residential developments which is a huge attribute when it comes to marketing projects.” Mr Pancur, who has a passion for property development, has also worked as project manager on a number of developments. He offers his clients experience in the construction and delivery of projects, construction funding, project pricing, as well as project marketing and sales. His experience in development construction and project marketing and sales has resulted in more than $750 million of residential and commercial property sales. Also a major player in the Queensland Sotheby’s International Realty Projects and Developments team is Vivian Yu, director of Business Development, Asian Markets. A Taiwanese national, Vivian moved to Australia when she was 17 and has worked in project development and marketing for more than seven years. In that time she has established a strong rapport with the Asian markets. Vivian specialises in providing multi-channel solutions based on selling to international markets. She has a great deal of business development and sales experience working with several high-profile developers and has hosted numerous seminars in both Australia and China. “With Patrick and Vivian at the helm of the team, we are expecting to see big things come from the Projects and Developments division, very quickly,” Mr Arthur said.

Superb materials combine with vision and flair, exemplifying elegance and sophistication. Washed driftwood-grain floors add texture and character. Bespoke fixtures and fittings have been meticulously planned and executed, creating the ultimate expression in luxury and style. Jewel offers ready access to fine-dining experiences, showcasing the best food and wine Australia has to offer – enhanced by excellent service and an enviable location. Designed by internationally renowned DBI Architects, the impeccable façade of the building will integrate seamlessly into the ocean view. Each of the 28 apartments has been designed and fully furnished to create a unique luxury beachfront residence. Offering access to a stunning range of facilities including an alluring infinity pool and a spa, Sanbano provides the ideal opportunity for those with an appreciation for quality, craftsmanship, style, design and exclusivity.

keeping brisbane liveable. Liveability. It's the new catch cry of major cities the world over as they search, sometimes in vain, for the right balance between catering for inevitable housing growth and maintaining lifestyle. FEW WOULD REALISE or remember that the phrase was arguably first coined in Australia in the early 1990s by shock Brisbane Lord Mayoralty winner, the pugnacious Jim Soorley. Frustrated with the lack of a binding, whole of city strategy, Soorley sought to change the face of the city in a manner that would improve its lifestyle in the face of a massive population buildup. Most of his Liveable Brisbane 1993 and Brisbane Plan 2010 reforms are still visible today. Character housing protection laws have preserved the tin and timber look of "old Queenslander" dominated streets and suburbs, and have influenced the design of new properties. His Urban Renewal Taskforce inspired the rebirth of inner city suburbs such as New Farm, Newstead, Bowen Hills and of course, Fortitude Valley, and his suburban centre improvement program has made quality medium density living in the city's suburban villages a reality. During his 12-year reign at City Hall, he also opened Southbank, introduced CityCats to the river, created 600 new parklands and reserves, imposed strict vegetation protection orders, and put an end to the 130-year long dredging of the Brisbane River. All designed to make living and working more enjoyable in our former big country town. So, is he happy today with the Brisbane he ruled undefeated for over a decade? Yes and no. On the property front he predicts that the housing market value will continue to grow at a mild pace. "We will never see the extreme swings of fortune of a Sydney and Melbourne, and that's a good thing.

16

"I'm more concerned by the nature of the development we're seeing. Unless policies are changed, we're going to end up with vertical slums in the inner city, with units too small to live in and clearly bad integrated planning around them. "I have a real problem with some of the horrible development being approved and the lack of appropriate master planning. There's too many relaxations delivering very bad outcomes. "Yes, when I was Mayor we saw a need for high quality urban infill, particularly in the inner city. But there has to be a limit," he said.

"I have a real problem with some of the horrible development being approved and the lack of appropriate master planning. There's too many relaxations delivering very bad outcomes."

For the past quarter century or more Jim Soorley has remained a staple of Brisbane life. He was first detected on our radar screens in late 1990 as the latest likely political punching bag for the popular and omnipresent political starlet Sallyanne Atkinson, who had taken the Brisbane Lord Mayoralty by storm in 1985. No one in the Labor Party, the media or let alone the community thought he had a hope of winning the biggest prize of Queensland local government. Mrs Atkinson, or "Salaryanne" as Labor had begun to successfully tag her, was thought

unbeatable. But she had not reckoned with the dogged, almost pugilistic, inner belief and talents of the former Catholic priest from the Tweed. He grew to become one of our most successful Lord Mayors, securing resounding re-election wins in 1994, 1997, and 2000 before deciding to step down in May 2003. Underpinning his 12 years in the job was a near autistic understanding of large organisations borne of academic opportunities provided by the Catholic Church. Having served as assistant parish priest in Queensland, Tasmania, and Victoria, he was sent to the US to continue his education at Loyola University in Chicago, where he graduated with a Master of Arts in organisational psychology in 1985. While in the US, he left the priesthood and began working as a training and development consultant for a large US corporation. Upon his return to Australia in 1986, he joined the recruitment industry and was responsible for establishing the Brisbane offices of national recruitment consultancy firms. Today, Soorley is still an active as ever Chair of Unitywater, a business that provides water supply and sewerage services to Moreton Bay and Sunshine Coast residential and business customers. He is a non-executive director of resources company TerraCom, which has a portfolio of assets in Mongolia and Queensland. He is also Non-Executive Chairman of CS Energy, a Queensland energy company that has more than 400 employees, operates three power stations and has a trading portfolio of 4,035 megawatts.

Embrace winter and revel in a snowy wonderland from inside this beautifully appointed home in Aspen. Cosy up by a fireplace and gaze out the windows over the Colorado mountains and neighbouring golf course.

There is a strong aura of romance attached to owning an enchanting villa in Greece, a rustic chalet in Aspen, or a grand apartment in the glittering city of Dubai. REGARDLESS OF DEMOGRAPHIC, the grass in other exotic pockets of the world often appears greener.

The four-bedroom, four-bathroom Aspen property has cherry hardwood floors, a sunlight filled living room with fireplace, a lower level family room with wet bar and a master suite with huge walkin wardrobe, steam shower and jetted tub.

Slightly over budget, this Aspen dream is on the market for AUD $5,211,522.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, recent research points to a rising number of Australians purchasing property overseas and an increasing online search volume of international listings.

amg turns 50 Mercedes-AMG celebrates 50 years of pushing the boundaries in driving performance. MOST PEOPLE TEND to think of ageing as having a negative connotation. It is human nature to try to defy age. The average person will spend upwards of $50,000 on anti-ageing in their lifetime, trying to prevent the ravages of Father Time. Simply put, humans associate ageing with getting old and many of us are nothing short of terrified of it.

24

Mercedes-AMG, on the other hand, takes a very different approach to ageing. So different, in fact, that it is not even called ‘ageing’, but ‘developing’ – and you will never hear someone accuse them of being ‘old’ or ‘outdated’, more than you would ‘revolutionary’, ‘cutting-edge’ and with ‘curves in all the right places’.

On the eve of their 50th birthday, Mercedes-AMG’s development has seen them become one of, if not the most successful high-performance vehicle conglomerate in the world.

ON THE EVE of their 50th birthday, MercedesAMG’s development has seen them become one of, if not the most, successful high-performance vehicle conglomerate in the world. Delivering almost 100,000 units in 2016 alone, Daimler’s high-performance branch is headed into its best year yet with tripled sales since 2013 and a 44 per cent growth year-on-year. Flashback to 1967 in Affalterbach, Germany, where two young men by the names of Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher were finetuning engines in an old mill, turning mundane vehicles into high-performing machines. Their favourite hobby soon became their greatest passion and, in 1971, their AMG 300 SEL 6.8 won in its class at the Spa-Francorchamps 24hour race. They inaugurated their Affalterbach facility in 1976 and soon began manufacturing highperformance sedans and coupes. By 1984, Aufrecht had developed a new cylinder head with 4-valve technology which made its debut in a 5.0-litre V8 engine. The collaboration with Mercedes-Benz did not happen until 1990, however, when AMG were commissioned to build race cars for the Deutsche Touring Masters racing series. In 1996, the dream was truly realised for Aufrecht and Melcher with the release of the first model from Mercedes-AMG, the C36, which was used as the official safety car for the 1996 Formula 1 season. By 2005, Mercedes-AMG was a 100

per cent owned subsidiary of Daimler alongside Mercedes-Benz. The AMG range was finally introduced to the Australian market in 1996 with the C36. In 2015, Mercedes-Benz Brisbane acquired the rights to the first Australian AMG Performance Centre, cementing its place as the largest Mercedes-Benz showroom in Queensland. With this, the Mercedes-Benz Brisbane and AMG Performance Centre ensures superior stock holding. And proving its standing in the Queensland market, in late-2018 Mercedes-Benz Brisbane will open its doors to a new worldclass, five-storey facility with its own museum, as well as a number of restaurants and cafes. Now with more than 400 performance centres worldwide, Mercedes-AMG continues to push the boundaries of performance and technology on a daily basis. The company is now home to one of the widest and most advanced ranges of high-performance vehicles, with more than 40 separate AMG models in the entire range; and Daimler’s high-performance branch is showing no signs of stopping there. It is quite clear the number 50 marks the start of something much bigger for Mercedes-AMG, and their unprecedented development over this short period goes to show that ageing is anything but terrifying – it is an opportunity to develop and change for the better. After all, as the saying goes - age is just a number.

Riesling is always the best value wine on any list.

classic wine renaissance OLD SCHOOL WINES are making a comeback, with modern varieties of the old classics providing a chic, yet sumptuous drink of choice. According to Lindsay Baker, Gold Coast Area Manager for Samuel Smith and Son, there has been a renaissance in quality chardonnay sales of late, with people opting for more than the recent stripped back unwooded versions and opting for power and elegance. “Similarly, quality Cabernet Sauvignon is proving popular due to its elegance and food friendliness,” Mr Baker said. When it comes to what we should be drinking this spring, Mr Baker said

“A couple of my favourites are Heyman Lowenstein 'Schieferterrassen' from the Mosel in Germany and Mesh Eden Valley Riesling, a collaboration between two great Riesling crusaders, Robert Hill-Smith and Jeffrey Grosset,” he said. “Viognier seems to have an image issue, but if people think of it as Chardonnay's exotic and flamboyant sister I think they would understand it better. Think of a wine with Chardonnay's texture but with an exotic flavour profile packed with white peaches, apricots and lifted ginger. As Queenslanders, it suits our cuisine and our personalities and we should be drinking a lot more of it!” Mr Baker recommends seeking out E.Guigal Condrieu from France’s Rhone Valley and locally, 'The Virgilius' Viognier by Yalumba from the Eden Valley.

a diamond is not forever

A career gemologist, Anna Cisecki has held some of the most precious stones ever unearthed. As Executive Director of Australian Diamond Portfolio, she’s teaching investors to recognise their true value.

BEAUTIFUL, ENIGMATIC AND impossibly rare, pink diamonds have become one of the most sought-after and valued assets in the world. And, it’s not by chance that investors seeking to diversify their portfolio are looking at these special little pink gems. Statistics published by the Fancy Colour Research Foundation confirm rare intense and vivid pink diamonds have experienced an incredible average annual growth of more than 14 per cent since 2005, a total price appreciation of more than 485 per cent. “Pink diamonds have outperformed practically all investment classes as consumers and investors continue to view them as a long-term safe investment option, an effective hedge against inflation and a unique opportunity to create value and gains in a portfolio,” Ms Cisecki said. “Changes in the world economy are helping to fuel demand for investment diamonds while the supply squeeze is further driving price growth.” The Rio Tinto-owned Argyle Diamond mine in Western Australia is the only significant source of ultra-rare pink diamonds in the world, producing almost 95 per cent of global supply.

30

However, in less than five years it will be time to say goodbye to one of Australia’s most famous natural resources. After more than four decades of production, Argyle’s supply of pink diamonds is nearing exhaustion and the mine’s life is drawing to a close in 2021.

from sourcing to storage and insurance with our high-security vaulting partners, ongoing valuations and eventual resale. These are important considerations when investing in this highly lucrative space.”

But this is news which comes with a silver lining for investors and firms such as Australian Diamond Portfolio with its boutique team of specialised investment diamond advisors.

“Pink diamonds have outperformed practically all investment classes as consumers and investors continue to view them as a long-term safe investment option, an effective hedge against inflation and a unique opportunity to create value and gains in a portfolio,” Ms Cisecki said.

Ms Cisecki believes much of the reason for Australian Diamond Portfolio’s success has come because of the need for a specialist investment firm to simplify the investment process around pink diamonds. “Rare pink diamonds are not just the realm of the uber-wealthy; investors of all types and levels of the market are getting involved from small private retail investors and wealth managers to financial advice groups and family offices. “The fastest growing segment of our client base is SMSF trustees. They come to firms like ours because they value our ability to source the best available stones on the global market. We also provide the full end-to-end solution

Given the ongoing uncertainty in global financial markets and the demonstrated return potential, pink diamonds are indeed an asset class that every investor should be looking at. In another decade the pink diamonds from Argyle will emerge as the new Faberge egg - the thing legends are made of.

The Investment That Has Withstood All Pink Diamonds have averaged 13.8% growth over the last 10 years, outperforming all other hard assets. Crucially, pink diamonds continued to grow even during the worst of the global ďŹ nancial crisis. With global supply set to be reduced by 95% in 2021, more and more investors are turning to pink diamonds as their alternative asset of choice.

pretty in pink THE AVERAGE-SIZE diamond for an engagement ring is between .5 and one carat. Compare that with the 59.60 carat rare pink diamond that was recently sold by the world’s oldest auction house, Sotheby’s. The stunning ring, known as The Pink Star, went for about AUD $94 million (US $71 million) at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong, setting a new world record for the top price of any gem sold at auction. Originally from South Africa and mined by De Beers in 1999, the 59.60 carat Pink Star is the largest diamond of its kind the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has graded. The colour is known as Fancy Pink, which the GIA says is the highest grade possible for a diamond. Pink diamonds obtain their unique colour from a process known as plastic deformation where the pressure changes on the gem to create structural anomalies in the crystals. On average, a pink diamond is valued at 20 times that of other diamonds. The Pink Star is rated as ‘Internally Flawless’, meaning there are no internal inclusions. The extraordinary diamond is classified by the GIA as a Type IIa stone, a classification that signifies chemical purity and is applicable to less than 2 per cent of all diamonds. The massive oval-shaped pink diamond out sold the previously most expensive gem, the Oppenheimer Blue diamond, that was sold for US $58 million in May, 2016. While Sotheby's has not revealed the name of the buyer, the auction house did reveal that the ring was purchased not by a private collector but rather by an international trader within the jewellery industry.

MY PRECIOUS BOUGHT FOR THE equivalent of AUD $17 at an English junk sale in the 1980s, the oversized ring appealed to the buyer for its size and design. The owner enjoyed wearing the ring so much they even wore it while doing housework or visiting the supermarket. When a jeweller saw the ring, it was said it might be worth something. Recently auctioned by Sotheby's, that 'something' was a 26.27 carat white diamond that fetched over AUD $1.1 million.

Bulgari Loves' Paradise necklace featuring 125ct blue sapphire

timeless value

and a sparkling investment

Bulgari jewels have proven not only to be a girl’s best friend, but an attraction for avid collectors and investors alike.

THERE ARE COUNTLESS reasons for owning a special piece of jewellery; it may be for its emotional value, or a desire to express oneself, to commemorate a special occasion or simply for its beauty. Whatever the reason, a Bulgari jewel can also become a real investment for life.

The value can be defined by being a historically interesting piece for its time, for the particular style or fashion-wave it represents, for its absolute uniqueness due to the gemstone preciousness or to the magic aura it has thanks to the person who owned it.

Bulgari jewels have proven they are far more than just a girl’s best friend. Over time, their value at auction has consistently increased and between 2013 and 2016 final sale prices averaged more than 120 per cent higher than their catalogue estimate.

As the jeweller to the stars, many celebrities have been wearing Bulgari creations, with their own glitzy stories to reveal.

Beyond the undeniable value that arises only by the fact of being a one-of-a-kind Bulgari High Jewellery creation, there are multiple points of interest that attract the Bulgari passionate to the major auction houses of the world.

Some of the pieces reached at auction for the jewellery worn by some unforgettable Bulgari divas were spectacular, demonstrating that a story behind a piece can really sell. In May 2013 at Sotheby’s Geneva, a collection of magnificent pieces worn by Italian actress Gina Lollobrigida at the height of her fame, surpassed all estimates and set new records after they went under the hammer. Among the 24 pieces to be auctioned, 11 were Bulgari pieces. The biggest attraction of the evening was a pair of extraordinary Bulgari diamond and pearl earrings from 1964, which broke the previous world record for a pair of pearl pendants when they sold to an anonymous bidder for CHF 2,285,000 (US $2,391,321), more than five times their estimated value. Bulgari’s famous Serpenti is not just one of the most coveted icons of the Roman Maison, but over the last few years it has also become one of the most attractive signature designs to collectors at auction, generally reaching increases of 75 per cent on their estimated values.

34

Despite the well-established international gemstone market, some truly unique creations of nature may take decades or a lifetime to be found, occasionally on the open market, sometimes an exciting find at auction.

Naomi Watts wearing Bulgari High Jewellery necklace at 69th Cannes Film Festival

But even today, Bulgari sometimes succeeds in finding one of nature’s treasures as evidenced in an acquisition lasting ten years of an extremely rare 500 carat sapphire from Sri Lanka. The owner, reluctant to part with the rough gem, finally found the courage after seven years to cut the stone for Bulgari. It took another three years and the loss of almost 400 carats, to perfect the ultimate result. The final 125 carat sapphire was an explosion of life, of a blue deep as the sea, with the highest quality for cut, colour and size. It became the undisputed centrepiece of the Loves’ Paradise necklace, part of the Giardini Italiani collection. The piece was sold to the first private collector who saw it, at an event held by Bulgari close to Florence in 2015. In one year it has already tripled its value, demonstrating how the Bulgari Serpenti high jewellery of today, can become the valuable heritage High Jewellery watch in diamonds and of tomorrow. Discover some emeralds launched of these mesmerizing jewels in 2017 at a Bulgari boutique near you in Brisbane Queensplaza, Gold Coast Pacific Fair, Melbourne Collins Street & Crown and Sydney.

The America's Cup

There's little, if any, doubt most Australians over 45 remember at least five things from the nation's win in the 1983 America's Cup off Newport, Rhode Island.

THE INIMITABLE BILLIONAIRE Alan (Bondie) Bond, the boxing Kangaroo flying proudly aloft the Australia II's mast, Men at Work's Down Under anthem, the feared winged keel and, of course, the raucous celebrations of our then PM, Bob Hawke. Hawkie, still on his political honeymoon following his March 1983 election win, declared on national TV that any boss who sacked his workers that day for taking a sickie was no more than a "bum".

“Probably a lot of people think back to 1983 and when Australia II won. The next memory is Alan Bond going to jail and then followed by our boat, One Australia, sinking," he said.

It was a defining moment for the sport of sailing in Australia and a breakthrough for the design, innovation and tactical nous required to beat the Americans at their own game. For the yanks, who had held the Cup for 132 years, the longest winning streak in world sporting history was over. And it had taken the scheming and bank balance of Bondie, the design autism of Ben Lexcen and the genius of skipper John Betrand to prise it off them. Australia had failed in six previous bids to win the Cup since 1962, so the 1983 win appeared to herald a long run at the top of the heap. But it was not to be. Bondie's defence of the Cup in 1987 off Fremantle never materialised, beaten in the challenger trials by another Australian outfit, Ian Murray's Kookaburra. Kookaburra in turn was belted by the Americans in the final and the Auld Mug trophy headed back to the States.

It wasn't until 1995 that Australia was again in the mix off San Diego. Alas, in the round robin stage of the challenger series the One Australia entrant sunk to the bottom after its weakened hull collapsed in rough seas. A second Aussie bid by sailing legend Syd Fischer, Sydney 95, also came last. It's now been more than 20 years since a local bid was launched, primarily due to the cost of competing. The price of infrastructure and technology has exploded to become an almost impenetrable barrier to entry. Australia may have 60 billionaires at last count, according to the Financial Review Rich List, but up until recent moves to standardise boats and costs, the America’s Cup has become the preserve of the gazillionaire. The good news, however, is if and when an Australian attempt is realised at the next Cup in 2019, we will have a wealth of locals available to organise, steer and crew the bid. Because Australian sailing management, design, technology and skill has continued to play a massive role in the Cup. This year alone 40 of the 70 crew and staff who competed for the six teams at the midyear 35th America’s Cup in Bermuda were Australian. Holder, Oracle Team USA’s pursuit of three wins in a row had Jimmy Spithill in the wheelhouse. The Australian who won Olympic gold in London and silver in Rio, Lake Macquarie local Nathan Outteridge, steered the Swedish entry, Artemis Racing to the Challenger finals, losing to the Kiwis. And Team New Zealand itself had Bendigo skipper Glenn Ashby, a world champion sailor, aboard its flying multi-hull.

Jimmy Spithill told The Guardian's Nick Vindin in Bermuda that despite the lack of an Aussie team there were "...a lot of Australians in the teams. Ironically out of the six teams – there are three Australian skippers and even more personnel manning the boats on and off the water". Spithill is a former world champion sailor for Australia and, for Team USA, a two-time America’s Cup winner and the youngest ever victorious skipper. “Probably a lot of people think back to 1983 and when Australia II won. The next memory is Alan Bond going to jail and then followed by our boat, One Australia, sinking," he said. Another Aussie on board Oracle Team USA, tactician Tom Slingsby, told The Guardian the America’s Cup had been out of the spotlight locally for too long. Sydney's Slingsby is a Sydney to Hobart victor, a World and Olympic champion and a former America’s Cup winner. "This is the pinnacle of sailing. It is the Formula 1 of sailing. We are in the fastest boats of our sport and we are on the cutting edge," he said. "I dream of one day being able to race for an entry bearing the flag of my country of birth. “I would love to compete for Australia in the America’s Cup. If anyone was curious about whether we could win the America’s Cup, you just have to look through these teams. They are littered with sailors from Australia,” The Guardian reported. “We have to get an Australian team somehow, and we are working through trying to find ways to do that. When we do, we will win this thing eventually,” he predicted.

tea paradise Tea … it’s a beverage much-loved by millions around the world. In fact, its story began in the Chinese Empire more than 2000 years BC.

SINCE THEN IT has travelled from the courts of the Far East to the mugs of missionaries and traders and eventually to the dainty teacups of 16th century western Europe. Over the centuries, it has been imbibed by prince and pauper, sovereign and sailor, baron and beggar. Recently, tea has not enjoyed as much acclaim as it once held and can often be perceived as a granny’s beverage or perhaps simply a cute excuse to hold your ‘pinky’ in the air. However, a New York based company is changing the way the world looks at tea. Appealing to a new generation of tea lovers and an older generation looking to revive their love for this simple, yet elegant, beverage, Tavalon Tea is the exclusive brand about to hit Australian shores. Founded in New York City in 2005 by businessman and entrepreneur, John-Paul Lee, Tavalon Tea is filling a void in the market for quality tea products with strong branding.

38

“Tavalon Tea is a lifestyle company that happens to be selling tea. We appeal to not only the brand and image conscious, but also to the health conscious.” The product has proved so successful the company now operates global offices in Dubai, Cairo, Hong Kong, Phnom Penh, Tokyo, Seoul, Shanghai, New York City and Beijing, and this month (August) launches its operations in Australia with offices based in Sydney and on the Gold Coast. Mr Lee said bringing the luxury brand to Australia was all about finding the right partner and he has found that with health-conscious and luxury-oriented Australian businessman, Matthew Youn. Matthew is so passionate about his new venture for change that he sacrificed his role as Chief Executive of a few well-established finance firms as well as his decent remunerations, to invest his time and passion into Tavalon Australia and New Zealand. “Sometimes in life you have to give up something great, to gain something even greater,” Mr Youn said. Mr Youn, an alumnus of London Business School, currently holds eight directorships in both public and private companies in Australia, including his new role as Managing Director of Tavalon Australia and New Zealand. As an avid tea drinker, Mr Youn is well aware of its health benefits but realised the popularity of coffee meant these advantages were being thrown away.

“We wanted to provide a little oasis in the hustle bustle of our concrete world which is increasingly becoming fast paced. Tea is very calming and soothing,” He believes his new role will allow him to educate others to begin a new tradition that will help them physically, mentally and emotionally. His clear wealth of experience and education have equipped him with the courage and confidence to take on this challenge and make a positive difference to one person, one cup of tea at a time, until it reaches the world.

Making its debut in Brisbane, in partnership with Queensland Sotheby’s International Realty, the company is already fielding plenty of interest in Australia including that of five-star hotels, fine dining restaurants, and showcase events. Mr Youn said the business had been well received and was now strategically collaborating with renowned brands in the market. Queensland Sotheby’s International Realty Managing Director, Paul Arthur, said he felt Tavalon represented the same values as the renowned real estate brand and was excited to be serving the exclusive tea at its open homes in the future. “Tavalon Tea is seen as a luxury lifestyle product and it complements the Sotheby’s brand perfectly. We are proud to be aligned with them,” Mr Arthur said. Tavalon is derived from Avalon, the mythical paradise island where the mortally wounded King Arthur was taken by nine fairy queens. The ‘T’ is taken from the word ‘tea’ and combined Tavalon equals ‘a tea paradise’. “We wanted to provide a little oasis in the hustle bustle of our concrete world which is increasingly becoming fast paced. Tea is very calming and soothing,” Mr Lee said.

Tavalon’s exclusive range of teas are procured and blended by its tea sommelier Chris Cason, who collects the finest ingredients from select tea farms around the world. Mr Cason also creates customised blends for the exclusivity of certain establishments. The company has partnered with more than 8000 clients worldwide. These include Google, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Formula 1, The Plaza Hotel, Langham Place, Park Hyatt, International Emmy Awards, Tiffany & Co, Magnolia Bakery and MTV Awards, just to name a few. And while tea might seem a misfit at such champagne events as the Grammys and Emmys, Tavalon have that taken care of with their range of tea-infused cocktails. These include clever rebranding of traditional cocktails, such as TEAquila Sunrise, MoTEAjo, SmarTEAni, Chai MarTEAni, Tea Mimosa, Rooibos MarTEAni and plenty more. “You have people who talk about their social beverage of choice being tea or coffee and others who say their social beverage of choice is alcohol so we like to think we’ve covered all bases,” Mr Lee said.
