sotheby’s international realty global news update

As the year draws to a close, it’s time to reflect on Sotheby’s International Realty considerable achievements and significant sales over the past few months.

SOTHEBY’S INTERNATIONAL REALTY is all about incredible homes and majestic mansions, but sometimes it’s appreciating that others are not so fortunate and reaching out to help those who need it the most. Sotheby’s International Realty® global network of affiliated companies and sales associates, have pledged to donate funds for the construction of more than 150 homes to a New Story community in Mexico. New Story is the brand’s charitable partner and a non-profit organisation. At the two-day 2017 Sotheby’s International Realty Global Networking Event (GNE) in Las Vegas, New Story CEO and co-founder Brett Hagler challenged those present to help build a community of 100 houses, at $US6500 per home. The goal was surpassed with more than 150 homes pledged. Once fully-funded, these houses will provide a safe, sustainable living environment and unlock the potential for families to thrive. The GNE brought together an amazing 2,400 members of the Sotheby’s International Realty network, with more than 155 of the brand’s companies represented from 34 countries and territories worldwide, making it the largest event in its history.

The event’s #SIRGNE hashtag was used more than 900 times across Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

The Sotheby’s International Realty® brand is the first real estate brand to present property listings outside of Japan to readers of the Nikkei, giving Japanese consumers access to residential real estate offerings in nearly 70 countries and territories.

In other news, Sotheby’s International Realty Affiliates LLC has announced an exclusive alliance with the Nikkei, the most influential news publication in Japan, via its digital platform which reaches more than 29 million monthly readers. The Sotheby’s International Realty® brand is the first real estate brand to present property listings outside of Japan to readers of the Nikkei, giving Japanese consumers access to residential real estate offerings in nearly 70 countries and territories. Sotheby's International Realty - East Side Manhattan Brokerage has been engaged

to market the penthouse of the Woolworth Building in Manhattan which is on the market for a staggering $110 million. The building was completed in 1913, the tallest in the world at the time, and the penthouse, which covers more than 900 sqm, if sold would destroy the previous downtown sales record for the $50.9 million penthouse at Chelsea’s Walker Tower. In Texas, Kuper Sotheby's International Realty is now the first brokerage in the state to close on a home purchased entirely with the popular cryptocurrency, Bitcoin. Sheryl Lowe, a broker associate of Kuper Sotheby's International Realty and the agent who represented the buyer in the sale noted, "In all of my 33 years of closing transactions, I honestly couldn't have expected something so unique to go so smoothly. In a matter of 10 minutes, the Bitcoin was changed to US Dollars and the deal was done!" And when it comes to other significant sales, Sotheby’s has successfully completed transactions on properties including a historic mansion in New York to an idyllic Caribbean escape in Turks & Caicos, from the US to Dubai to Australia and everywhere in between.

residential update Deanne Arthur, Paul Arthur and Michael Mahon

Southeast Queensland continues to offer the best value on the eastern seaboard, according to Queensland Sotheby's International Realty CEO, Paul Arthur. AND HE IS NOT alone in saying so. Demographer and futurist Bernard Salt earlier this year said many buyers were moving from the southern states to make the most of the price variations from cities such as Sydney and Melbourne. Mr Arthur believes there is exceptional value to be had in southeast Queensland with properties having so much more to offer than those of equivalent value in the southern states. “Our residential listings are continuing strong sales throughout Queensland, especially in the southeast corner,” he said. “And we are seeing continued interest and buyers coming into the market from southern states with one property in Maudsland selling in just five days to a Sydney family.” Mr Arthur said properties around the $1 million to $2.5 million appeared the most buoyant. “We’ve had a solid turnover at that price point and great engagement at our open homes and auctions,” he said. He said Queensland Sotheby’s International Realty auction results were in line with Queensland statistics with about 50 per cent selling under the hammer. The overall clearance rate, however, was sitting at about 90 per cent following post-auction negotiations. Time spent on the market was also quite low, averaging between 30-45 days. But with the Commonwealth Games a matter of months away, many are speculating what it will mean for the region, and more specifically the Gold Coast.

8

“I’m constantly asked what the Commonwealth Games will do for the property market and I don’t think it’s going to incrementally increase prices,” Mr Arthur said. “I don’t think, for example, that we will see a 5-15 per cent increase. However, what the Commonwealth Games will do is keep the spotlight on and energy in the Gold Coast market which has already been energised for the past 12 to 18 months. “I believe this will continue, but I don’t think we will see any major spikes because of the Commonwealth Games – just continued focus and energy in an already buoyant market.” He said the region had seen a gradual rebound from Global Financial Crisis (GFC), with some price points returning to pre-GFC levels. “Although you could argue the luxury end of the market still has a little way to go,” he said. Despite this, Queensland Sotheby's International Realty has made some landmark sales this year, not the least of which is Ascot’s Crosby Road stunner, complete with ‘Batman’ tunnel. It achieved the top sale price in the exclusive blue-chip suburb after sitting on the market for a mere 34 days. In addition, the Whitsundays’ Mandalay House, which in 2015 was voted the finest home for sale in the world by readers of international property hub Mansion Global, also broke records. Although the sale figure cannot be disclosed, it was on the market with a price guide of $19 million, making it the highest achieved in the Whitsunday region and arguably one of the highest in Queensland over the past 12 months. “And we are achieving some very strong sales results in our penthouse collection both on the

Crosby Road, Ascot

Gold Coast and, more recently, in Brisbane.” “In Brisbane, especially, there appears to be an underlying trend for people moving away from these suburban family homes into large innercity and city penthouses”, he says. “It’s not dissimilar to what we see in other major cities such as New York, Japan and London.” “People’s lives are so busy these days with school activities and work. They don’t want all the work that comes with managing and maintaining large-scale properties. No one has time now to spend all day Saturday mowing the lawns.”

“We get to market some of the most amazing and beautiful properties throughout Queensland, many in the northern tropics which are available for short-term executive leasing so we thought we would start to apply our capabilities in that space,” Mr Arthur said. Queensland Sotheby's International Realty continues to go from strength-to-strength with the acquisition of Gold Coast firm M-Motion. “We’re about 60 days into the rebranding and onboarding of the M-Motion team and it’s going very well,” Mr Arthur said.

“Many of the properties founder Michael Mahon and his team brought with them have been transacted and now they are focused on the core business development areas.” “It’s been a great assimilation with a lot of synergies coming into the acquisition, including property management. So much so, we’ve further invested in our property management division with the addition of Jenn Grainger who has recently been appointed Manager Executive Leasing at our Paddington office.” The company has also taken the first steps to building an executive holiday letting portfolio.

Maudsland

“We get to market some of the most amazing and beautiful properties throughout Queensland, many in the northern tropics which are available for short-term executive leasing so we thought we would start to apply our capabilities in that space,” Mr Arthur said. “It’s the perfect bookend to what our Sotheby’s International Realty colleagues are doing in New Zealand where they have a wonderful reputation for executing on high-end luxury holiday rentals.”

Mandalay House, Whitsunday

And in terms of residential property? Mr Arthur believes all the economic indicators show a buoyant property market “We’re probably two years into our seven-year cycle and it’s on the way up. All the indicators would point to a buoyant market over the next three to five years.”

projects & development update

Riverbrooke

Going global is the new catchphrase of the Projects & Developments arm of Queensland Sotheby's International Realty. ITS MANAGING DIRECTOR Patrick Pancur says while the focus of the company’s residential arm has always been about local, interstate and international marketing, when it came to projects and developments this hasn’t always been the case. Things are about to change, however, with a direct push into the global marketplace, making the most of the brand’s international reach to nearly 70 countries. “Sotheby’s International Realty is now really pushing projects. It’s the next stepping stone for the brand and will create a Sotheby’s global project brand and team in marketing projects throughout the world,” he said.

10

“We have significant marketing budgets in local, interstate and international markets. In fact, there is no other brand that can cast a bigger net.” Next year will see Queensland Sotheby's International Realty Projects & Developments host regular seminars and events throughout Asia-Pacific to showcase its projects.

luxury project’s penthouse. Construction on the 17-apartment boutique development, the first development to take place on the highly sought-after Chevron Island since 2009, has started and Mr Pancur expects it to be sold out by completion in mid-2018. In Coolangatta, the elegant 28-apartment Sanbano tower has all but sold out and a recent sale hit $2.625 million. “To be able to show construction has started, or indeed finished, on these major projects gives buyers confidence that the market is going strong in southeast Queensland,” he said. “Some of our higher-end stock is selling well with product from $1 million to $3 million moving fast in projects such as Tarcoola and Sanbano. “We’re seeing the same thing in Brisbane where there is a strong emphasis on sales in boutique developments by owner-occupiers and town homes are selling from $900,000 to $1.7 million. “There’s also a trend of people downsizing or upsizing into top-end apartments and penthouses so they can buy, lock up, travel the world and come back to a low-maintenance property.”

“We have a strong buyer network coming from our Singapore office, Hong Kong, Taiwan, India and the Gulf States,” Mr Pancur said. “In February we will be in India for the Conclave Event to present many of our projects to the market in Mumbai. “And about four months ago we hosted seminars in New Zealand to showcase the luxury Jewel Residences to a very exclusive clientele.

Mr Pancur said more local developers were taking on boutique projects as market demand shifted towards high-end quality. “People want uniqueness, amazing architecture and high-end finishes, and as a brand that’s what we want to represent,” he said.

“They want a point of difference with key amenities such as pools, gyms, business centres or workspaces within the development, 24-hour concierge services and on-site spa treatment facilities. “We can see a lot more developers undertaking boutique projects. There’s definitely betterquality projects coming on to the market.” Mr Pancur said the Gold Coast to Brisbane growth corridor remained a boom area, especially now the Coomera Town Centre was under way. Queensland Sotheby’s International Realty has already sold 45 per cent of Coomera’s Park Edge development of 14 townhouses priced between $420,000 to $450,000, which is due for completion this month. They will also be launching the Riverbrooke estate in Upper Coomera this month which will comprise 34 spacious three-bedroom contemporary residences, with a pool, gazebo and dedicated caretaker. “In general, we’re seeing more owner-occupier stock selling, especially as it is more difficult for international buyers now with restrictions within Asian markets, particularly in China with its funding restrictions. “We’re also experiencing a migration boom with buyers from Sydney and Melbourne, cities which are simply becoming too expensive. “These buyers have a huge desire to live or invest in southeast Queensland.”

Sotheby’s International Realty Global Networking Event (GNE) in Las Vegas

“We want to roll out seminars like this interstate and internationally. Some of our strong partners will be out of Singapore and Hong Kong where we will be targeting their database of prequalified buyers.” He said the recent Sotheby’s International Realty Global Networking Event (GNE) in Las Vegas, which brought together 2,400 members to talk about the global brand, made for an inspiring two days of networking. Back in southeast Queensland, sales are also proving strong and confidence in the market is high. On the Gold Coast, the exclusive Tarcoola Riverfront Residences, on Nerang River at 35-37 Tarcoola Crescent, are about 40 per cent sold. Queensland Sotheby's International Realty has just secured a contract for $1.15 million on the

a working lifestyle:

what today’s executives want in a home

Years ago, top executives and directors would be confined to the upper levels of city offices. Not so much today. Jewel Residences

WITH ADVANCES IN technology, along with changing organisational cultures that make it easier to work remotely, more executives are able to perform their role away from the office, often from home. This has led to a re-evaluation of what the “must-have” features are in an executive home. Rich Harvey, president of the Real Estate Buyers Agents Association of Australia, says the property needs of executives have changed to a certain degree over time. “Their needs have changed as technology has changed and as executives have become more aspirational,” he says. “While location has always been important, now each executive is very individual: some want to live in a bush retreat while others want to live in the inner city.” More executives are able to perform their role away from the office, often from home.

PRIORITISING PRIVACY

LOW MAINTENANCE

Harvey says privacy is key for CEOs.

Director of Queensland Sotheby’s International Realty, Patrick Pancur says he finds executive buyers are seeking property that is low maintenance.

“This is very high on the list,” he says. “They also want a space to entertain, with plenty of outdoor living. Some of them want a home automation system such as C-BUS where they can walk in the door, press a button and the curtains draw back and the music comes on.” But he adds while smart homes are a nice touch they are not essential. “If executives have the budget for a smart home then it’s nice but each has different ideas of what is important,” he says. “For example, some might require a three-car garage. Or for others, a pool is a must-have.” However, a separate home office is critical. “This is especially important if they have kids, as they need a separate area they can retreat to in order to get their work done,” Harvey says.

A-LIST AMENITIES When it comes to apartment living, Harvey says executives expect amenities. “They also want an in-house gym so they don’t need to leave the building to work out,” he says. Also important is a good aspect and views. “Executives don’t want to feel hemmed in, especially if they plan to entertain a lot,” Harvey says. “Executives in the $10 million-plus range will also be expecting water views.” When it comes to apartment living, executives expect amenities.

12

“With apartments they want to be able to lock-up-and-leave,” he says. “They also want places with a concierge or butler services and high-quality finishes are important, which is something they’re more than prepared to pay for.”

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION Pancur says that having great restaurants and shopping nearby is essential. “And, within reason, living near an airport can be a plus,” he says. “It generally depends on if they need to do a lot of travelling.” Harvey says that being near good schools and universities, if they have kids, tends to top the list of executive must-haves. “This seems to be a bigger driver than being located near their office,” he says. “One top executive we recently helped moved from a salubrious address in a leafy suburb to the inner city as he wanted to be closer to restaurants and an urban vibe.”

JEWEL RESIDENCES A new development on the Gold Coast is targeting top executives with several facilities and amenities designed with their needs in mind.

Jewel Residences

JEWEL RESIDENCES ON THE GOLD COAST HAS BEEN DESIGNED WITH THE NEEDS OF TOP EXECUTIVES IN MIND.

Jewel Residences is a landmark, triple-tower, prestige complex by China’s Dalian Wanda Group in a joint venture with Ridong Group, due for completion in early 2019. While predominantly residential, with 512 one, two or three-bedroom apartments with a separate study, the equity-led venture will also include a five-star hotel, world-class day spa, private gym and fine-dining restaurants, spread across 130 metres of absolute beach frontage.

“There is nothing like it being developed on the Gold Coast or anywhere in Australia.”

Jewel Residences

The complex will be a fully serviced, high-end resort, featuring an inter-connecting podium linking all three towers, sparkling pools that lead directly onto the beachfront, beachfront dining and retail. “We are close to the airport and an hour’s flight from Sydney, giving those in the business community everything they need, combined with a luxurious lifestyle that’s second-tonone.”

The triple tower complex is due for completion in early 2019. Sales and Marketing Director for Jewel Residences Frank Joris says the development will be a status symbol for all who live there. “As a residential and hotel facility in one, right on the beach and with outstanding amenities, it’s perfect for those who no longer want to work from their traditional offices,” Joris says “Our most prestige offering, Tower Three, features its very own concierge service dedicated to taking care of all those things people simply don’t have time to do.

PROJECTS & DEVELOPMENTS

peter beattie. It’s a matter of mere months until the biggest event in Queensland’s history – and the largest sporting event in Australia for the past decade – takes place on the Gold Coast.

“The two most important things in my life are my grandchildren. I want a good future for them. That’s so crucial to me.” IN APRIL NEXT year, the 2018 Commonwealth Games will focus 1.5 billion pairs of eyes around the world firmly on the Gold Coast. More than 6,600 athletes and team officials from 70 nations and territories will converge on the Gold Coast for the 11-day sporting and cultural event, shining a spotlight not just on Queensland’s southeast corner, but also the whole of Australia. And the man behind this behemoth of an affair says its legacy will live on for decades to come. Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) chairman Peter Beattie regards the 2018 Commonwealth Games as a game-changer … literally … and a unique opportunity to promote the Gold Coast, Queensland and Australia to the world. The 36th Premier of Queensland and the architect of the Smart State initiative says the effects will be far-reaching and lasting and he is delighted to be a part of the vehicle which is driving this transformation.

1744 SUMMER 17/18 | 15

THE MAN: A lot of things have changed since Beattie, who once upon a time in a not so far away land described himself as a ‘media tart’, was Premier from 1998-2007. When he took a back step from the Queensland political arena, he took a step away from the limelight going on to serve as Queensland’s Trade Commissioner to North and South America, based in Los Angeles, from 2008 to 2010. Proactive in the development of Queensland research, particularly in areas such as biotechnology, during his nine years as Premier, Beattie went on to accept positions as Medical Research Commercialisation Fund Director, Ambassador for Life Sciences Queensland and Joint Adjunct Professor at the University of Queensland’s Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology. As if this didn’t keep him busy enough, he also took up political commentary with Sky News. So, when invited by Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk to also take on the role of GOLDOC chair, the decision was not an altogether straightforward one. “It wasn’t an easy decision but, in the end, the legacy the Games will create was the most attractive thing to me,” he says.

16

“The two most important things in my life are my grandchildren. I want a good future for them. That’s so crucial to me. “And that means we, the Gold Coast as a city, Queensland and Australia, have to be globally competitive and we have to make certain we are doing things that attract the world’s attention. “We have to be nimble and we have to be smart and we have to continue to be clever strategically. So, I think hosting the 2018 Commonwealth Games is a unique opportunity and we don’t get many opportunities like this. “I also thought my experience in government and overseas gives me the ability to drive things forward. You get to a certain point in your life where you want to put something back. “But it’s been a lot of hard work. I’ve spent a lot of time on the M1.”

THE GAMES: Next April will be the fifth time Australia has held the Commonwealth Games. The first was in 1938 in Sydney and was actually known as the British Empire Games. The Commonwealth Games, which saw only 15 countries compete with 464 athletes and 71 events, were timed to coincide with Sydney's sesqui-centenary (150 years since the foundation of British settlement in Australia).

The next time Australia held the Commonwealth Games was in Perth in the 1960s. This time known as the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, 35 nations took part with 863 athletes and 104 events. Brisbane was next in 1982 with 46 nations participating, 1,583 athletes and 141 events with Melbourne to follow in 2006 with 71 nations, 4,500 athletes and 245 events. The 2018 event on the Gold Coast is set to annihilate previous figures with an incredible 6,600 athletes from 70 nations and territories, and 18 sports to be contested. It is expected to garner an audience of 1.5 billion around the world. The 2018 Commonwealth Games will also see the largest integrated para-sports program in the Commonwealth Games' history, with more than 300 athletes expected to compete in 38 events, including the marathon and para-triathlon. It will also be the first time in its history that there will be an equal number of medal events for men and women, something Beattie is hoping will be picked up by the International Olympic Committee for their future events. The biggest sporting spectacular the Gold Coast - the first regional Australian city to host a Commonwealth Games - has ever seen, will run in conjunction with Festival 2018, a mix of

“I also thought my experience in government and overseas gives me the ability to drive things forward. You get to a certain point in your life where you want to put something back.”

theatrical productions, world-class musicians, dance, visual art and Indigenous arts practice. And according to Beattie, the enthusiasm within the city of the Gold Coast is palpable. “We asked for 15,000 volunteers and we got 47,000 applying. It’s wonderful to see everyone’s enthusiasm,” he says. “And while it might have cost us around $2 billion to host the Commonwealth Games, we have more than doubled our investment with about a $4.5 billion return.” Of course, Beattie is the first to admit there have been challenges, not the least of which is transport. “Transport is a big headache, so we’ve had to come up with some imaginative solutions and a strategy that works,” he says. “It’s been a big challenge but we’re already seeing the clearing of bottlenecks, the doubling of rail services and the extension of the light rail. “And while the M1 won’t be upgraded in time for the Commonwealth Games, the upgrade will happen as a result of them.” Security was another test but one Beattie feels GOLDOC has overcome.

“We’ll have 10,000 police and security on the ground, as well as drones and we’ll be using the best and latest technology. We’ve looked at the experiences of the rest of world and taken them on board. “The safest place in Australia to be in April next year will be at the Commonwealth Games.”

THE LEGACY: Real estate is sure to be one of the gold medallists post-Games. But it won’t be the only one. In fact, GOLDOC’s website lists them all under its Embracing 2018 legacy program which states: “The city will shine on the world sporting stage and the promotional exposure for business, trade, investment, tourism and events will herald a new era in the region’s growth and maturity”. As an adjunct to the Commonwealth Games, Trade 2018 is designed to strengthen trade and investment ties across the Commonwealth through engaging activities highlighting the opportunities Queensland presents. So far it has visited India, Malaysia and Singapore, in line with the Queens Baton Relay, to showcase tourism and target priority international buyers and investors.

1744 SUMMER 17/18 | 17

It has hosted a delegation from China's Torch High Technology Industry Development Centre to showcase Queensland's investment opportunities and participated in The Australian Bio-energy and Bio-products Symposium (TABBS), to help commercial opportunities across the bio-economy. The GC2018 Tourism Action Plan alongside the Reconciliation Action Plan will showcase Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage, arts, cultural and tourism experiences. The Embracing 2018 Legacy Program will also help to produce more active communities thanks to new and improved facilities across the Gold Coast, while Festival 2018 will offer a diverse program of events in Cairns, Townsville, Brisbane and the Gold Coast. It clearly looks like a podium finish for all involved. “There will be a new Gold Coast when all this is over. We’re changing the face of it and we’re

already starting to see the legacy of the light rail, an increase in train frequency, improved public transport, more community engagement as well as the construction of major facilities,” the Chairman says. “The benefits are flowing and will continue to flow back to the community. “This truly is a unique opportunity to transform the Gold Coast economy. It will see the Gold Coast marketed to the world and this equates to better tourism and increased real estate. “The Gold Coast is traditionally a boom and bust economy, and this will mean the highs and lows will be lessened. There will be a more stable economy also meaning real estate and investment will be maintained. “It will create a really dynamic global economy. The Gold Coast has always been attractive but this will lead to a more sophisticated, broader economy and more jobs.”

Something that is particularly close to his heart is the transformation of the athletes’ village and parklands to a Health and Knowledge precinct, in partnership with Griffith University and the Gold Coast University Hospital, which will attract some of the world’s best researchers developing health outcomes. “This is an incredibly unique opportunity to get a really visionary global city – attracting researchers from around the world, new sports tourism, and post and pre-game training, for example, in the lead up to 2020 Olympics in Tokyo,” he says. “To be able to market the Gold Coast as the jewel in Australia’s crown to a third of the world’s population is priceless. It’s fantastically exciting. “It truly will create a new Gold Coast, transforming it into an absolutely dynamic global city.”

THE BENEFITS ARE FLOWING AND WILL CONTINUE TO FLOW BACK TO THE COMMUNITY.

zane goddard. The day Zane Goddard was born, his father Bayden sat watching Formula One racing on television while waiting for wife Jill to give birth.

NOW MR GODDARD, a well-known Gold Coast architect, wonders if this had any impact on his son’s passion for motorsport.

I was missing and then I’d get back to the track and discover I needed to make another trip because I needed another tool.

“He’s always loved mechanical things. He was always the kid with the Matchbox car. When he was four years old he had Ferrari pyjamas and he only stopped wearing them when he was seven because they were cutting him in half,” he laughs.

“In Zane's first State title, I hadn’t done the airbox tight enough and it fell off while he was leading – that’s when I realised I needed a proper team running him.

Zane agrees: “As long as I can remember I’ve loved cars. My first video game would have been a car game. I’ve always been a petrol head and mum and dad have always loved watching racing on television. It’s a shared passion”. And just as well, because the Ferrari-pyjama wearing, Matchbox car-toting boy realised from a young age that merely watching racing on television would never be enough … he wanted to be behind the wheel himself. And so, a mere five years later at the age of 9 he started racing go karts. By the age of 15 he was racing Formula 4 in Australia and then spent another two years on the European circuit racing against some of the finest in the world. Mr Goddard describes himself and his wife as ‘closet rev heads’ but reckons, ironically, that he could be the only architect in Australia with a son in motorsport. “I play with crayons during the week and back when he started in karting was getting greasy fingers on the weekend,” he says. “A lot of people in motorsport are second or third generation but we started out having completely no idea what to do and some of the early race trips were a joke. We’d turn up and our tent would blow away! “We went to our first race meet at Lismore with the go kart in the back of my wife’s station wagon, no tools and no tent. Then we discovered people had custom-built trailers, individual parts they could change, tools ... “That first weekend I spent driving in and out of Lismore to Supercheap Auto to buy the tools

24

“It took a lot of work to get to understand the sport. It has so many nuances. You’ve almost got to be capable of reading tea leaves. You’ve got to be with the right people, the right team, or you’re just wasting your money.”

“My first video game would have been a car game. I’ve always been a petrol head and mum and dad have always loved watching racing on television. It’s a shared passion”.

Zane qualified for the Rotax Karting World Championships in Spain as a member of Team Australia when he had just turned 15. He placed 11th out of 76 of the world’s best junior competitors. The first year he raced Australian Formula 4 with Team BRM, Mr Goddard says “it was a steep learning curve” due to limited testing and seat time, and the family realised that the rounds in the championship which were held at street circuits, with big curbs and concrete barriers, were better suited to V8s than F4s. “Team BRM helped him develop as a driver and towards the end of 2015 he had the most front rows of any rookie,” he says. Even so, they took the enormous step to send their son to the UK to compete in the British Formula 4 Championship. Here Zane would race against elite young drivers his own age from around the world at legendary tracks such as Silverstone and Brands Hatch, where safety was greater thanks to purpose built tracks with gravel traps and run-offs.

“We knew it would be a great apprenticeship for returning to Australia because he would have so much more experience than other Australian kids,” Mr Goddard says. Mr Goddard describes the first half of the 2016 season as “a bit challenging” due to the lack of a full-time team mate to share data, but during the second half, he outscored everyone in the competition, winning four races, placing in another four and taking out three rounds. “Zane had to go and live in England on his own as a 16-year-old and it was a huge leap of faith but he did a great job,” he says. “Then I got really sick with a form of throat cancer and had radiation therapy and surgery. I’m better now but it meant last year I couldn’t get to England to watch and Jill had to divide her time between nursing me and watching him race. It’s a very dangerous sport and we really wanted to have a parent there.” The first year Zane spent in England he lived with another family but the second year he had an apartment to himself as he concentrated on his driving.

‘Momager’ Mrs Goddard says Zane’s karting days were more of a father-son experience to which she was merely a spectator while she also raised their other two children Max, now 15, and Isabelle, now 19, who had no interested in racing whatsoever. But when he started Formula 4 all the interstate travel for racing and testing sessions, coupled with Mr Goddard’s work commitments, meant she stepped up to accompany her son. She set him up in England when he first went over, spending two months there ensuring he was safe and she was comfortable leaving him in the care of others. However, due to her husband’s illness this year, she had to learn to let go and watch her son increasingly stand on his own two feet … or perhaps, more appropriately, take the wheel of his life’s decisions. Now Zane has returned to Australia and plans to complete his schooling and finally get his full driver’s licence. Despite having spent hours on the racetrack, the 18-year-old still drives on our roads as a red P-Plater.

And while he would love to return to the European circuit one day, he now has his sights set a little closer to home. Mr Goddard, who describes his son as “completely singularly focused”, says due to his illness funding a return trip had “ become a bit impossible” for such an expensive sport. “So, we are investigating Zane racing in Australia again next year and hope to foster a career here for him. The most likely scenario is V8s Super 2 Series. “We are in the grips of making a decision and trying to raise the funds to do it. We need to place him with an exceptional team, with a great reputation and great people to make going forward worthwhile. “Zane is pure talent but to get a kid into Formula1 you’re talking $40 million to $50 million and we don’t have that sort of money. If you’re not with the best team you’re just really going through the motions, so we’ve brought him back in the hope of putting him with the best V8 team, to do it properly and to make a career for him.”

Not only did his abilities behind the wheel increase, Zane, who had only finished his Year 10 schooling, also grew as a person, learning how to fend for himself and how to cook “a mean spaghetti bolognaise”. He didn’t even have his driver’s licence as it was impossible for him to get the 100 hours required in Australia since he was living in another country. And in England he couldn’t drive because no one would insure a 17-year-old with a visa stating he was involved in motorsport. That, however, didn’t stop him racking up a breakneck 260kmph while flying around a circuit when he had an opportunity to drive a Formula 3 car. This year saw him also compete in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 Championship, the most competitive junior class in Europe under F1. And while he hasn’t yet raced an F1, he’s spent plenty of time on their European circuits, including the Circuit de Monaco where he raced his Formula Renault in the supporting class alongside the F1s at this year’s Monaco Grand Prix. And he even had the opportunity to race with Mick Schumacher, the son of motorsport legend Michael, during a round of the MRF Championship in Dubai where Zane took a 3rd place podium finish.

a giant leap With more power and torque than ever, the all new Mercedes-AMG E 63 combines aggression, technology and striking design in one irresistible package. 26

Mercedes-Benz | AMG Performace Centre Brisbane

SOME CALL IT the brand’s most astonishing technical achievement ever. Others, like Mercedes-AMG CEO Tobias Moers himself, refer to the latest edition of the E 63 4MATIC+ saloon as “the biggest step forward ever taken from one generation to the next”. Developed to re-invent large sports sedan benchmarks, no stone has been left unturned by Mercedes-AMG. A plush, tech-festooned cabin combines with astonishingly rapid acceleration and driving performance in a user-friendly package that more than delivers on the hyperbole. Major generational change is evident from the moment the AMG E 63 rolls into view. The striking exterior design features the power dome on the inner engine bonnet typical of AMG GT models. Pumped wheel arches hint at the performance that awaits while recessed air intakes are not just visually striking, but also provide a targeted airflow. Yet the AMG E 63 offers much more than a tough-guy exterior. The engine is the most powerful version of the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 yet, producing 450 kW of power and 850 Nm of torque and accelerating from 0-100km/h in 3.4 seconds (AMG E 63 S 4MATIC+ model). Now that’s quick for a bona-fide supercar, much less a family-friendly four-door sedan. The AMG E 63 makes all the right sounds, too, with distinctive engine and exhaust notes to correspond with each of the different AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs. Toned down to a low burble in Comfort mode, the AMG E 63 sound becomes increasingly bellicose dialing through Sport, Sport + and Race modes (Race mode available only on AMG E 63 S 4MATIC+). But while the latter mode will launch the E 63 like Apollo 11, one of the most intriguing new performance features is the introduction for the first time of Drift mode (on AMG E 63 S 4MATIC+). This feature over-rides another new addition to the AMG E 63 range,

4MATIC+, which matches driving conditions by variably sending power and torque to all four wheels. As the name suggest, Drift mode allows the driver to experience all the joy and exhilaration of pure rear-wheel driving. Another notable change has been the move to a new nine-speed automatic transmission. It utilises planetary gear-sets, but ditches the torque converter in favour of a computercontrolled clutch-pack. It’s one among many technological advancements that places the AMG E 63 firmly among the smartest cars on the planet. It’s among the safest, with nine airbags and the latest in partially automated driving functions.

"the biggest step forward ever taken from one generation to the next". It has cutting-edge systems that prevent further injury to occupants in the event of an accident, such as front seats that push the driver or passenger closer to the centre of the car in a side collision. The PRE-SAFE Sound feature will also use the car’s audio system to emit a sound that triggers a natural reaction in the eardrums to minimise hearing damage. The new AMG E 63 S 4MATIC+ has more than just all the bells and whistles you expect from Mercedes-AMG. It not only lives up to the reputation already enjoyed by the Mercedes-Benz E-Class family as a ‘masterpiece of intelligence’, but joins the ranks of the world’s most accomplished performance saloons. The all new E63 is now available for purchase at Mercedes-Benz Brisbane’s AMG Performance Centre, located at 824 Ann Street, Fortitude Valley (Corner Bridge St & Wickham St). Contact AMG Brand Manager Benjamin Schultz on (07) 3251 6666 to enquire or visit www.mbbrisbane.com.au for more information.

gambaro restaurant Quality food, innovative trends and old-time hospitality have kept Brisbane’s Gambaro Seafood Restaurant in business for more than 60 years.

THE OLDEST ESTABLISHED seafood business in Brisbane opened in 1953 and, three generations on, still stands by the ethos that the customer is the most important thing. The restaurant is known for its five-star ratings and reviews, multi-generational clientele, hosting local and international celebrities, and the iconic annual Mud Crab Cup Races. Last month it was announced the Best Seafood Restaurant at the 2017 Savour Australia Restaurant Awards for Excellence. While having consistently been recognised at a state level, this is the first time it has been awarded the national title. Gambaro Group Director John Gambaro puts this success down to a family that is passionate about the business and the customers who support them. The restaurant began operations with his grandfather, continuing with his father Michael and his brother Dominic, and now himself and brothers Frank and Donny. “When it comes to our food, we search Australia wide to ensure we are buying the best produce,” John says. “Our commitment to quality is paramount and every day is a new day … we make sure our team understands our high expectations and that the produce we purchase represents us on the plate of the guests that we serve.

30

“We are very fortunate and have a wonderful family. Of course, we couldn’t have done it without the wonderful leadership of my father.” Their clientele has included the likes of comedian Bob Hope and actor Orlando Bloom, but it is the multi-generations of diners that hold a special place in Gambaro’s heart. “A friend of mine came in the other day and said he remembered coming in with his dad as a child,” he says. “And recently a guest said he started coming here 25 years ago with his father and now he has brought his own two-year-old, which is just beautiful. “Now the new generation is coming through and we’re looking forward to serving them for the next 50 years.” The Gambaros also believe in giving back and hold events throughout the year to support different charities. These include the popular Mud Crab Cup Races with funds raised going to the Courier-Mail Children’s Fund. “We are absolutely thrilled to win this award and be recognised by some of the best in Australia’s restaurant industry,” Gambaro said. “Our hard work, tenacity and dedication to delivering only the best quality of food and service has paid off and we are putting Brisbane on the map. We’re a business based on family

and community, and being able to officially give Brisbane the best seafood is very special. “We only have our passionate staff and team to thank as well as our loyal customers, supporting us day in, day out. It’s a real honour to bring this back home.” The Gambaro family’s Black Hide Steakhouse was also nominated in the Best Steak Restaurant category, and previously took out the top spot in both 2014 and 2016. Black Hide Steakhouse Brisbane opened its doors in 2013, and is the only restaurant in Queensland to provide an exclusive selection of world-class steak cuts from Stanbroke Beef, Australia’s most esteemed beef breeder & producer. Also part of the Gambaro Group is Brisbane’s luxurious, Gambaro Hotel, located on Caxton St.

rare treasures This year’s Hong Kong Autumn Sale saw some of the finest and most exquisite pieces sold under the hammer. WHILE THE SALES achieved a new world auction record for Chinese ceramics, thanks to the rare Ru guanyao brush washer which sold for $294.3 million HKD ($37.7million AUD), it was just one of many lofty prices attained over the five days. In fact, the Autumn Sale series achieved a total of $3.15 billion HKD (or more than half a billion Australian dollars), an increase of 42 per cent from the previous year, lifting Sotheby’s annual total for major auctions held in Hong Kong to the highest level since 2014. The 18 auctions saw rare and beautiful pieces which spanned centuries and 16 auction records were established. Here is just a small sample of some of the superb artefacts which sold under the hammer.

BREGUET TIMEPIECE Tick tock, tick tock … time has run out to secure this stylish watch from Breguet which sold under the hammer for just under $70,000 AUD. While not the most expensive watch at the auctions (that was a rare Patek Philippe which went for an incredible $245,123 AUD this exquisite timepiece was a real eyecatcher with its fine platinum skeletonised face, painted Roman numerals and off-centre ring dial. The $69,451 AUD wristwatch features tourbillon movement, finely engraved manual winding lever movement, two fan-form sectors for power reserve and retrograde 24-hour indication. It sold with a platinum case, milled coin edge band and sapphire crystal display back, plus a platinum Breguet folding clasp. The case, dial and movement were all signed.

RARE CARVED IVORY CHILONG BOX Sold for $57,374 AUD, this precious and rare carved ivory Chilong box from the early Qing Dynasty has been skillfully carved in the form of an archaic jade ‘she’, depicted with a pair of twoclawed sinuous chilong dragons, one portrayed clambering around the sides and the other coiling through the centre. Carved from the same piece of ivory, the dragons have meticulously incised manes, stripes and bifurcated scrolling tails. The attention to detail epitomises the exquisiteness of early Qing Dynasty imperial carving. Only a handful of other

Similarly carved chilong dragons with archaistic motifs appear to have been made as early as the Yuan Dynasty. Close to 30 ivory carvers are believed to have served in the Qing Court from the Kangxi to Qianlong period, including eight artisans from Suzhou, most of them related by blood or from the same school. Unfortunately, due to lack of court documents from that time, it is impossible to match the carver to individual pieces.

THE EDWARD T. CHOW ‘BAJIXIANG’ BOWL Sold under the hammer for $51,287,500 HKD ($8,407,356 AUD), this outstanding bowl from the Xuande period is painted in vivid cobalt blue with the Buddhist emblems bajixiang and lotus blooms. The bowl was once part of two remarkable collections of Chinese ceramics, those of Edward T. Chow (1910–1980) and T.Y. Chao (1912–1999). It is the first time it has been on the market in 30 years and follows the successful sale of another exceptional Xuande bowl last year. The bowl is delictately potted with deep angled sides moulded with two raised fillets towards the lower body and is painted with the bajixiang emblems resting on stylised lotus blooms wreathed by curling stems and leaves, all above a garland of trefoil foliate motifs.

TIBETAN GILT-INSCRIBED JADE RIVER PEBBLE KAPALA BOX Bestowed on the 8th Dalai Lama in 1783, this Tibetan gilt-inscribed jade river pebble hollowed into a decorative box in the Qing Dynasty’s Qianlong Period, sold under the hammer for $763,895 AUD. The delicate gilt inscription records the Qianlong Emperor, referred to by his temple name, Qing Gaozong, bestowing an imperial ‘Edict of jade’ to the eighth Dalai Lama Jamphel Gyatso (1758-1804) who reluctantly accepted the responsibility of governing. The Dalai Lama’s involvement in the affairs of the state appears to have been minimal with regent Ngawang Tsultrim appointed by the Qianlong Emperor in 1770, remaining in office until 1786 at the behest of the eighth Dalai Lama. Gyatso eventually ruled Tibet on his own from 1786 to 1790.

examples of this type of ivory box and cover are known to exist.

EXTREMELY RARE 1000-YEAROLD PORCELAIN BOWL A precious and extremely rare 1000-year-old porcelain bowl has smashed … or, at least, it has shattered the record for the most paid for any Chinese ceramic piece at auction. The bowl from the Song Dynasty, dating from 960-1127, was thought to achieve around $132 million HKD ($22 million AUD), but a determined anonymous buyer saw its price soar to an incredible $294,287,500 HKD ($49,922,931 AUD) in a tense 20-minute battle at Sotheby’s Hong Kong auction house’s Autumn Sale series, in October 2017. The 13cm diameter piece, featuring a turquoise glaze, broke the previous record set in 2014 for a Ming Dynasty wine cup, which was sold to a Shanghai tycoon. The rare, delicate bowl was made by Ru guanyao, one of the most revered of the Five Great Kilns, and designed to wash brushes at the Song Dynasty imperial court.

It is believed there are less than 90 pieces of Ru ware left in the world with only six sold publicly since 1940. In fact, Sotheby’s states it is one of only four pieces in private hands. The sale exceeded the former auction record for Chinese ceramics of a white porcelain cup decorated with chickens from the Ming Dynasty made sometime between 1465 and 1487AD. The cup sold in 2014 to one

of China's wealthiest, taxi-driver-turnedfinancier Liu Yiqian. With 18 auctions over five days, the Autumn Sale series achieved more than half a billion dollars, a 42 per cent increase in sales from last year and lifted Sotheby’s annual total for major auctions held in Hong Kong to the highest level since 2014. Top prices achieved spanned centuries and categories, with sixteen auction records established.

The new owner will be among the top five private landowners in the state. Incomparable beauty is in abundance at the ranch with towering sea cliffs, secluded beaches, nature reserves and tropical rainforests. While it is a working ranch, not only can its prime pastureland pay dividends, there are commercial facilities, residential estates, a golf course, an oceanfront resort hotel and country lodges of more than 300 parcels. With about 32km of coastline, there is a wide range of ocean activities available plus 5,600 hectares of pristine reef. Price Guide: $342 million

ESTEEMED ESTATE – GEMINI, MANALAPAN, FLORIDA With 365m of dune-lined beach on the Atlantic Ocean and 400m of frontage on Lake Worth, this 6ha estate in Palm Beach, South Florida, is truly exceptional. Gemini is immense in scale, bounteous in beauty and plentiful in privacy. Perched atop a dune, with 360-degree views, it is the only home on the ocean beach for a good kilometre. The estate comprises a simply stunning 12-bedroom main residence; two four-bedroom beachside cottages; the seven-bedroom Mango House; plus a guest or staff house of four studios and apartments. In total, there are more than 30 bedrooms, a series of formal and informal living and dining areas, a media room, libraries, offices, numerous terraces, an expansive wine cellar and two elevators. The main residence has an incredible 6,000 sqm with both ocean and lake views. Gemini also has a divinely elegant pool, a PGA standard golf area, tennis court, half basketball court, fitness centre and spa. There is also a dock and pier on the lake for boating and water sports. BUY YOUR OWN ISLAND – SALUTATION ISLAND, GLEN COVE, NEW YORK, UNITED STATES Step back to a time of elegant refinement and unsurpassed beauty at Salutation Island. The Manor House is truly exceptional with extraordinary craftsmanship throughout its 2,500 sqm. The grand entrance opens to a stately rotunda vestibule and from there the elegance continues to flow from the Great Hall’s majestic staircase with an 18th century balustrade, to the mahogany-panelled library, octagonal breakfast room, music room with marble fireplace and formal living room with panelled walls of bleached oak. The estate comprises 12 master bedrooms, 12 bathrooms, plus 10 service quarters with another three bathrooms. There are five additional major residences on the island, offering 21 guest rooms between The Creek House, Pond House, Wing House, Two Sheds Cottage and Dosoris Cottage. Further amenities include an eight-stall stable, paddocks and a groomsman’s cottage. There is also a fortified sea wall, a dock capable of accommodating yachts and seaplanes, and a helicopter landing zone. Views stretch over the Long Island Sound to the Manhattan skyline, Connecticut and Westchester. This is all set on a 35ha island on the North Shore of Long Island. The land was granted by King George I and purchased by Peter Caverly in 1721 for 200 pounds. Price Guide: $165 million

TIME CAPSULE – HISTORIC HOUSE, MOSCOW, RUSSIA The historic property was formed in 1842 as a result of the division of a larger estate, whose history dates back to the mid-1700s. It originally formed part of the grand-ducal lands of Ostozh'e. Interestingly, the development of the region was heavily influenced by its proximity to one of the most ancient roads that passed along the modern Ostozhenka. In 1890, the 1,500 sqm mansion was passed to Vladimir Alexandrovich Lyzhin, an honorary citizen and first guild merchant, owner of a textile factory in Ivanteevka outside of Moscow. A reconstruction between 1901-1907 saw the creation of its 20 rooms which includes nine bedrooms and six full bathrooms. Price Guide: $116 million

RENAISSANCE REVIVAL – PALAZZO SACCHETTI, ROME, ITALY This late Renaissance beauty was constructed in 1542 by Sangallo, the architect of Palazzo Farnese and co-adjutor of Raffaello in the construction of St. Peter's Basilica. Sangallo built it for himself, and in 1608 the Archbishop of Naples, who built the chapel frescoed by Agostino Ciampelli, bought it. In the second half of the 17th century, it was purchased by the Marquis Sacchetti of Florence. Covering 2,025 sqm, with a majestic terrace of 275 sqm, plus four balconies, there is also 688 sqm of tranquil and elegant gardens and a beautiful 70 sqm nymphaeum (a fountain adorned with plants and sculpture). The striking estate includes 12 ‘noble’ halls, with their marble statues, ornate ceilings and stained-glass windows, all painted according to some of the most significant cycles of Mannerism (a style in European art that emerged in the later years of the Italian High Renaissance). Among these are works by Francesco Salviati (the enchanting frescoes in the Globes hall) and those of Pietro da Cortona and Jacopino del Conte. There are 15 bedrooms and eight full bathrooms, plus several separate units comprising a three-floor building with five apartments, a garret and an attic, a two-storey unit and a three-story office.
