efeated Mag&zine is a one-theme issue for young photography. We want the artists to express themselves, not only showing what they do but also the story within the photograph. The issue searchs for the poetry behind the shot. By proposing a topic we encourage the artists to relate their work to a subject supported by few words of their own. The sorrow of the color blue.

One word suggesting feelings. One color leading to the ocean, the sky, the soul and the sadness. This time, 19 young photographers expose their grief to the blueness.

“ I was thinking about the mood of being blue and about passing the experience of getting yourself relieved from it...

And i was thinking that the “the blues” may as well be compared to an onion... (...) It has it`s own layers, each of them differently morphing our hidden soul shelters. And it may cause tears , trying to peel off this layers, because , just like an onion’s layers allergy effect the eyes, they might cause soul allergy. It is said that to make peeling of an onion less arduous you need to put it on water first, unfortunately there are not yet any tips about how to make easier the peeling of the blues.

“ The sadness of a farewell. A way of making a person (my mum) close to me once again. Remembering how fragile live can be and representing she will be in my veins because will always be a part of who i am.

“ I feel that blue has had a huge inuence on what moments I decide to keep.

I believe the mind triggers an ability to capture color in essence of current emotions one is feeling. I feel when color is revealed in certain instances, the moment captured showcases a projection of ones inner thoughts.

“ The sorrow is in my blood. Besides that I’m very melancholic and sentimental, those emotions are strictly connected with a longing, and the longing is connected with a blue. In general the blue has in itself a huge load of all kind of different emotions. As every other distressing state of the soul, the blue is for me very inspiring regarding to the creative process as well as the reception of art.

I’ve read this poem recently:

Someone I loved once give me a box full of darkness It took me years to understand that this, too, was a gift.

BOUT JUAN

Who are you? Juan Achiaga.

Where do you come from? Where are you now? Where are you going? I come from a small province in Northern Spain. I lived in Madrid for several years before coming to the proverbial Big Apple, where I have been pursuing photography for the last year and a half. Where am I going? I still don't know.

Which cameras you shoot with? I generally use my Canon 5D Mark II, but I also utilize film cameras such as the Hasselblad 553 ELX, Yashica 35-M, Nikon F70, Nikon L35 – and sometimes Polaroid when I can get my hands on some film. Oh – and my iPhone camera!

Who is behind your images? The biggest influences in my career have been Guy Bourdin, Helmut Newton and ***. I love the world of film, so cinema has always played a role in the development of my work.

Where can we find your work so far? My work has or is in the process of being displayed in V Magazine Spain blog, Marie-Claire China, Tendencias Fashionmag, Metal and... Defeated! I have exhibited in New York and my hometown La Rioja.

An image that moves/inspires you? “Les Amants” de Magritte. I once made a short film about a Peruvian piano player on the New York subway. He had no money, poor health – but was still in love with life. He is an inspiration.

Something you should have said to someone but you never did? (no need to say who) I am quite reserved... I should have said some important things to certain people and I never did. I just hope I can say it one day.

What color are you? Black. Sometimes blue.

A song, a movie, a book Song: Grinderman - “Vortex”. But there are many. Movie: Again, there are too many but for now I have to say “Blue Velvet” by David Lynch. Book: I am not a reader but I own a lot of art and photography books.

Have you ever been defeated? What happened? Haven't we all? I get up, shake it off and move onto the next.
