If you’re ready to experience joy in learning within a unique community,

Deerfield is the place for you. The high school years are one of the most pivotal periods in a person’s life. You begin with a dawning sense of your talents, interests, and beliefs, and of what moves and motivates you. What you study during those years—and who you study with—will have a profound, lifelong effect on the path your life will take in college and beyond. Deerfield is a place where young people experience that time of growth in a setting and a community like no other. Students who join our community embark on a journey of reflection, resilience, and discovery in a beautiful setting that becomes a second home. Our academic program and outstanding facilities provide a framework for making lifelong friends, respecting the perspectives of others, rising to the challenges you encounter, and connecting with traditions such as singing the Evensong together and gathering for sit-down meals. And while there may be moments along the way when you feel unsure, you will be surrounded by teachers, coaches, classmates, and mentors who are there for you, and invested in your success and flourishing.

But at Deerfield, our goal is not simply student achievement. Our goal—as it has been for decades upon decades—is to create a school that celebrates and promotes deep bonds, health, inclusion, and the individuality of each and every student. We look forward to learning more about you, and to the possibility of welcoming you into our dynamic and joyful community. John Austin, Ph.D. Head of School

Break the mold Do you dream in watercolor? Relevé en pointe? Long for the bright lights of the stage? Whether you’re a seasoned performer or just beginning to discover your creative side, Deerfield is the place to be. Here, we want you to try new things. Our teachers—many of whom are practicing artists— will guide your exploration and encourage your self-expression. From Beethoven and ballet to Banksy, every student takes at least two terms of visual and performing arts, providing boundless opportunities to develop your skills or discover new passions.

Beyond the classroom, the arts energize and engage our campus community. Come join them, and let your imagination take flight!

Stephen Hannock ’70 came to Deerfield with the intention of playing ice hockey, but ended up discovering a passion for the arts. He went on to lead a successful career as a painter, winning an Academy Award for “Special Visual Effects” for the film What Dreams May Come.

CO U RSE HIG HLIG HT Defining Literary Traditions* Tenth-grade English emphasizes critical reading, focused discussions, and a variety of writing assignments connected to the study of literature derived from the British tradition. These include works of poetry, prose, drama, and creative nonfiction from British and postcolonial writers. Close reading assignments and class discussions encourage students to analyze and appreciate the elements of literature. Works by Chaucer, Shakespeare, the Romantic poets, and a nineteenth-century novelist provide a common reading list. Students develop their writing voices and learn how to structure and develop expository essays. Tenth graders memorize and deliver a declamation from a literary genre of their own choosing.

CO U RSE HIG HLIG HT Voices and Visions of Justice In this ninth-grade class, you’ll consider what an equitable society looks like, exploring lives and dilemmas depicted across a variety of literary genres. You’ll hone your writing style as you learn the fundamentals of English grammar, mechanics, and punctuation, all of which will complement the readings we complete as a class. Finally, you’ll deliver a literary reading and participate in a poetry contest.

/ LANGUAGE

Learn the language Deerfield’s robust language department offers instruction in four modern languages—Chinese, French, Arabic, and Spanish—and two classical languages—Greek and Latin. Whichever language (or languages!) you decide to study, you’ll bolster your proficiency alongside your cultural literacy. Learning a language is a challenging and rewarding process that demands engagement, flexibility, collaboration, and patience. If you strive to pursue advanced courses, several of our classes in both modern and classical languages will prepare you for the appropriate Advanced Placement Language Examinations, and progressive immersion is the norm in Arabic, Chinese, French, and Spanish.

All new students are required to take a language placement test to determine an appropriate class. If you’ve already taken a language that you wish to continue studying at Deerfield, that placement test will determine what level class you should join.

Study abroad is offered to all students in grades 10 through 12, but most students who choose to study abroad do so their junior year.

35

Breathe life into ancient texts Classical Languages The study of Greek and Latin is a critical part of Deerfield’s heritage; both languages have been taught here since our founding in 1797, and although some associate classical languages with a distant past, you’ll quickly discover that they’re very much alive in our Classical Studies Program. In your courses, you’ll explore the ancient Greeks and Romans and learn how their legacy continues to influence modern culture. Outside of class, you’ll come face to face with Roman history and culture through the program’s biennial trip to Italy, which includes visits to Roman, Etruscan, and Greek museums and archeological sites.

Our campus is the core of our welcoming, tight-knit community, where we study, play, dream, debate, and learn together.

Boarding, yes. Boring, never. There’s nothing like boarding school—and no better place than Deerfield to experience it. For most, Deerfield is their first boarding school experience. Here are a few things to know about living at Deerfield, many of which also apply to our day students, who are a critical part of our inclusive community. With the exception of going home to sleep (except maybe on weekends!), they fully participate in all aspects of school life.

DEERFIELD

ACADEMY

You’ll gain a sense of independence. Boarding school will help you develop important skills and habits you’ll rely on throughout your life—from managing your time to doing your laundry. For Deerfield students, the immersive nature of on-campus living creates a host of benefits—learning from others, leaning on them when needed, and developing a sense of agency and self-advocacy.

Your sense of the world will expand. Deerfield students come from 32 states and 42 countries. Living in community with individuals from such varied backgrounds and perspectives is an education in and of itself. You’ll learn how to value and respect difference and acquire skills that build empathy, leadership, and good decision making. You’ll never go it alone. Deerfield faculty serve as teachers, mentors, and coaches; they guide you at every step of the way, and every hour of the day. More than eighty percent of faculty live on campus, and most live in the dorms, where they provide students with the structure and caring support they need to thrive.

LIFE AT B OA RDIN G

You’ll be well looked after. We take the responsibility of caring for our community very seriously. Deerfield has a health center staffed by four counselors, a full-time physician, a nurse practitioner, and a team of nurses who specialize in adolescent care, along with a sports medicine clinic staffed by two full-time athletic trainers. To ensure the safety of our community members, we have several security measures in our buildings and dorms, and campus safety officers are on duty and available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

/

You’ll eat well. Sit-down meals are an important and enduring Deerfield tradition. Everyone in the community—students, teachers, and staff—gathers seven times each week to eat at family-style tables, with menus that often feature locally sourced food. You’ll be assigned to a different table every three weeks, allowing you to make new friends and get to know your teachers in a relaxed setting. In addition to the Dining Hall, you can also grab a bite to eat at the Greer or the Louis Café.

movie night, or making cookies. In tenth grade and beyond, students live in singles. Throughout your four years, your dorm will be the setting for some of your best Deerfield memories—from whipping up late-night snacks with friends in the common room to far-ranging philosophical conversations with your faculty resident.

DEERFIELD

You won’t be idle. While Deerfield’s rural setting is a big part of its charm, there’s always a wealth of activities happening on campus. From student productions and sporting events to concerts and dodgeball tournaments, we know how to have fun and stay active. While you’re welcome to get away for the weekend, the vast majority of Deerfield students prefer to stay on campus at the heart of the action.

You’ll have a room of your own (soon). To ensure a smooth transition to life at Deerfield, all ninth-grade students live in doubles at Johnson-Doubleday dorm, aka The Ninth Grade Village, with an assigned roommate. And all residence halls have live-in faculty members who look after their students—helping you deal with your homework (and maybe a little bit of homesickness), organizing an impromptu

LIFE AT DEERFIELD / C O CU RRICU L A RS

Deerfield provides ample opportunities to connect with students who share elements of your individual interests and background. Cocurriculars, extra-curriculars, student groups, and more give you the chance to try new things, learn about your classmates’ interests, and have a ton of fun in the process. Cocurriculars Each term, students are required to participate in a cocurricular activity. Unlike an extra-curricular (like Photography Club), these are organized, out-of-class programs focused on everything from athletics and the arts to community service. Your “cocurric” might be varsity soccer in the fall, afternoon studio time in the winter, and service at a local elementary school in the spring. However you choose to engage, your cocurric will help you grow as a leader, teammate, community member, and collaborator—all while enjoying yourself and making new friends.

Join the club Clubs and alliances play a big role in making our campus a place that buzzes with activity. You’ll see classmates hard at work assembling The Deerfield Scroll and other student publications. You can help organize a fundraiser for a great cause, or spend time volunteering in the local community. When you hang out on the quad during the weekend, you can join a game of chess, gaze at the stars with the Astronomy Club, or play Ultimate.

Whether you find creativity through the written word, the lens of your camera, or by drawing, painting, or sculpting—or more than one of the above—there are many outlets for sharing your art with the Deerfield community:

Albany Road, our premier literary and arts magazine, is a student-run publication that appears three times each year. Established in 1925, The Deerfield Scroll is the official student newspaper of the Academy. With a mission to encourage informed discussion of pertinent issues of concern to the Academy and the larger world, each edition is lively and thought-provoking. Deerfield’s yearbook, The Pocumtuck, chronicles student life and honors each year’s Senior Class.

The Little Brown House Review, named after—you guessed it— a little brown house on Albany Road, highlights the best student writing produced in Deerfield’s English classes.

Sharpen your skills in the arts and athletics. Whether you’re scoring the winning goal at a soccer game or appearing in a dance performance before the entire school, Deerfield’s arts and athletics programs will inspire you to bring your best. Go Big Green Deerfield student-athletes are dedicated, hardworking, and equally gracious in victory and defeat. They endure long hours of practice for the sake of the team. And when they take to the field (or the rink, or the pool, or the court), they’re energized by the cheers of teachers and classmates. That spirit of support and camaraderie is what Big Green is all about.

Deerfield’s athletics program embodies the highest ideals of teamwork and collaboration. What happens during intensive training and physical competition is an extension of the classroom experience; every Deerfield student-athlete learns how discipline, sportsmanship, and humility are essential qualities of leadership. And as with almost everything else at Deerfield, we want you to experiment. We provide appropriate levels of competition for every sport: whether you’re picking up that squash racquet or lacrosse stick for the first time or the thousandth time, you’ll have limitless opportunities to stay in shape, clear your mind, and be supported by your teammates and coaches. We train for success. We win with grace. And when we lose, we do so with our heads held high. (But don’t get us wrong—we love to win).

Whether your passion lies in studio art, photography, film and video, architecture, theater, dance, or music (or all of the above), you’ll benefit from the insight and influence of those around you. Your teachers—many of whom are practicing artists—will impart essential skills, pushing you to access the far corners of your imagination. And your friends and classmates will share ideas, critique your work, and lend a hand when you need a scene painter (or another alto).

Deerfield is home to a thriving collective of artists who make our campus hum with creativity. As part of that community, you’ll contribute your voice and vision to projects that will move and inspire your friends and teachers. Along the way, you’ll learn new techniques and collaborate with fellow artists, constantly improving and refining your craft.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a newbie or an old hand—our doors are open to experienced and novice artists alike. So come on in: Learn the ins and outs of silverprinting in our darkroom. LIFE AT DEERFIELD / VOLUNTEERING

Serving others is in our DNA. Deerfield has long celebrated community service and the importance of supporting those in need. Our Center for Service and Global Citizenship (CSGC) is the hub for these activities on campus—a resource for students seeking to give back through global opportunities, service projects, and mentoring. On and off campus, our community members devote their efforts to help curb hunger, address inequality, educate the next generation, and more. You’ll find students helping with homework at the local elementary school, lending a hand at Second Helpings, or volunteering with the Special Olympics. Every term, each of our athletics teams performs a service project. And there are times throughout the year when the whole school comes together—for a blood drive, the Relay for Life, Move for Love, or an impromptu fundraiser. The CSGC embodies the spirit of Deerfield’s motto—“Be Worthy of Your Heritage”—by serving others and forming meaningful relationships with community members beyond campus.

All aboard Our annual Spring Term Community Event is the bestattended service event of the year. In recent years, the event has benefited the American Cancer Society and Cancer Connection of Northampton. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Franklin County is the service program with the largest participation. Approximately seventy juniors and seniors serve as mentors and role models to young children on Friday evenings. Deerfield also hosts several Red Cross blood drives, where students participate as donors and volunteers.

Every Wednesday, the community gathers for announcements and performances at School Meetings. These weekly occurrences are a chance to open your mind, be heard, and contribute to a campus-wide discussion. The morning begins in your dormitory, where you wake up, get dressed, and greet the day. On some mornings, you’ll bump into your senior proctor in the common rooms, an upperclassman who helps you adjust to dorm life by serving as a role model and sounding board. Good morning, Deerfield!

DEERFIELD

You’ll experience moments of togetherness every day at Deerfield—whether it’s cheering your heart out in the stands on the Lower Level, hanging out in the Greer, or greeting friends and faculty as they pass you on Albany Road. Here’s a sampling of those shared experiences:

Class is in session Monday through Friday classes begin at 8:30 a.m. with three periods running to 2:50 p.m.—the afternoon is dedicated to athletics and other cocurriculars. Daily Community Time every morning and Flex Time in the afternoon provide opportunities for meetings, studying, or getting an early start on co- and extra-curricular activities. With an average class size of 12, you’ll have opportunities to actively participate in your courses and get to know your teachers, and a faculty advisor who will help guide your academic experience.

Did someone say hungry? Seven times each week, you’ll gather with classmates, faculty, and staff for familystyle sit-down meals. Your table assignment changes every few weeks, so you’ll get to meet a broad cross section of students and teachers. Students take turns waiting on tables, and if it’s your birthday, prepare to be serenaded! On Wednesdays (game days!) and special occasions, a “walk-through” lunch or dinner is served buffet-style.

Deerfield is nestled in the picturesque Pioneer Valley—a land of rolling hills, small farms, and great natural beauty. We make the most of our surroundings by swimming in the Deerfield River, hiking to the Rock, and sledding in the winter months. But there’s far more to the Valley than the outdoors. The nearby communities of Greenfield, Amherst, and Northampton offer cafés, bookshops, movie theaters, performance halls, and restaurants for students and their families to enjoy. Our location in Western Massachusetts also provides access to a range of larger cities that are just a car ride away, including Hartford, CT, Boston, and (a bit further afield) New York City.

Deerfield students are never away from their families for more than six weeks at a time. Dive into the Arts

ARTS

Deerfield’s cocurricular programs in the visual and performing arts are rich and varied. Take a look around, get connected to your passions, and start creating. A few words of advice: Collaboration is key. With so many arts organizations on campus, you’ll find endless opportunities to act, sing, laugh, and play with classmates. Every student participates in at least one cocurricular activity each semester. If you choose the arts, don’t hesitate to jump in. You may be a virtuoso in one area and a novice in another; the point is to keep growing and exploring. Sign up for private music lessons. Enroll in an architecture class. Open your mind at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. Trust us: you’ll never run out of options. Support your fellow classmates and artists (they really appreciate it). Sway in your seat (or out of it) at a dance showcase. Sing along to the spring musical. Attend a classmate’s show at the von Auersperg Gallery. At Deerfield, cocurriculars help us expand our cultural horizons together—collectively and joyfully.
