Before For most people a new fitted kitchen is a big investment and will not only take time to save up for but may mean missing out on other luxuries like holidays or perhaps a new car. Fully fitted kitchens can range from £10000 up to £30000 and beyond! As well as the high costs involved you also have to endure the disruption, upheaval and mess a full kitchen installation creates. Fortunately there is an alternative option. An easier way that costs half as much, saves time and hassle, adds value to your home and is totally flexible. It’s called a kitchen facelift. A kitchen facelift is the process of retaining your kitchen cabinets and replacing the door and drawer fronts, end panels, cornice, pelmets, plinths and corner posts until nothing of the old kitchen is seen. When professionally designed, measured and fitted a kitchen facelift is amazing value for money. For the amount of outlay and minimal disruption to your life the results are really very satisfying. How far you take the process is up to you. Introduce a partial redesign into the project, add new worktops, appliances and new tiles to the walls and floors, or simply just swap your existing doors and handles, the choice is yours.

ARE YOU READY for a great summer

IN BEDFORD BOROUGH? With less than two months to go before the Diamond Jubilee weekend, final preparations are well underway for a great summer in Bedford Borough. In the space of two months, Bedford Borough will host Diamond Jubilee celebrations, the annual Kite Festival, the arrival of the Olympic Flame, the 2012 River Festival and the Olympic Live Site at Bedford International Athletic Stadium. The Diamond Jubilee weekend coincides with the Kite Festival this summer, which brings thousands of people to Russell Park and the Embankment every year. However, in Bedford Borough the Kite Festival is only the start of the Jubilee festivities! The semi final of the Battle of the bands as well as an enormous ‘It’s a Knockout’ style competition, Teddy Bear’s Jubilee Picnic and band concerts will also take place across the long weekend – giving local residents plenty of opportunity to join in the fun! However, if you prefer a quieter weekend then you may be considering holding or helping to organise your own street party. The Council is also offering help for you as well! A series of workshops have taken place but help is still on offer. In most cases you will only need to fill in a single form and the Council is waiving the majority of fees involved as well as reducing the amount of notice which must be given from 12 weeks to just two! On Sunday 8th July, Bedford welcomes the Olympic Flame into the borough as part of its 1,000 mile journey across the UK. Thousands of people are expected to line the route and cheer on the torchbearers as the Flame travels from Goldington Road, down Barkers Lane, along the Embankment and towards Cotton End. The 2012 River Festival takes place on 21st and 22nd July and is expected to attract more

6

than 250,000 people to Russell Park and the Embankment across the weekend. The River Festival is the biggest free event in the region and one of the largest in the country and provides a huge range of entertainment and fun for the whole family. Bedford Borough will also be involved with the 2012 London Olympics when the International Athletics Stadium becomes an ‘Olympic Live Site’ between the 3rd and 10th of August. A big screen will be showing the best of the action live throughout the week while local sports groups will be offering everyone the chance to have a go at a range of sports and activities, all for free! Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “It’s all set to be a great summer in Bedford Borough with entertainment and great events planned for the whole family. “All of the events will help to bring communities together, either along the Embankment, in Russell Park or wherever you live with the help of locally organised street parties. “It all kicks off with the Diamond Jubilee weekend in June and I am sure local residents and visitors alike will thoroughly enjoy a great summer in Bedford Borough.”

Take a Break

Get away from it all this weekend We all look forward to the weekend when we can take a break from the stresses and strains of the working week, but how often are our hopes and expectations of a fun-filled few days dashed when we get caught up in household chores and responsibilities? Though catching up on home maintenance is necessary from time to time, we must not overlook the importance of relaxation. Experts say that getting away does wonders for both body and mind, and that regular holidays are a necessity, not a luxury. These days there are a myriad of opportunities to escape for a few days from an exciting city break to a relaxing retreat in the country: from a soothing spa stay to a frantic foreign escapade. They say a change is as good as a rest, and in order to return from a couple of days away feeling revitalised and rejuvenated, it is not necessary to have spent the whole weekend with your feet up doing nothing. On the contrary, a brisk walk, a round of golf or a couple of lengths in the hotel pool, will give your lungs a work-out and you’ll benefit from any extra exposure

to sunlight. A break from the normal daily routine prevents our mind and body from stagnating. Seeing and doing the same thing every day reduces the mind’s efficiency, so we need new stimulants to ensure we’re operating at our peak. Travel gives us the chance to visit new places and encounter new experiences, which all serve to make us much more interesting, with more to talk about, and we’ll return to work with our body and mind refreshed and raring to go! A few days’ break is not only a great stress buster, but is also a wonderful opportunity to spend quality time with your loved one. You’ll have more time to talk, appreciate one another and enjoy the simple pleasures in life – together. So, if your Saturdays are more gloomy than glorious and your Sundays are long and laborious, maybe it’s time you took yourself away for a few days to transform your weekend from something mundane, to an occasion that you look forward to with enthusiasm and relish. Make your weekend memorable by taking a short break!

BEDFORD PARK

bedford’s premier park Bedford Park is the town’s premier park owned by Bedford Borough Council, it has held the Green Flag award for the last four consecutive years. The park covers 25 hectares including classic Victorian landscaping and a range of facilities for visitors and the local community. Facilities range from its carriage drives, ornamental lake and modern play areas to its sporting heritage offering fine turf sports pitches for football, cricket and bowls as well as tennis and a basketball court. Bedford Park also boasts large areas of mown grass, shrubs and an outstanding tree stock with areas of naturalised bulbs and long grass for wildlife habitation. Its Victorian heritage, and feel, is still very evident with its buildings and mature trees. The land originally belonged to the hospital of St. John the Baptist which was situated in St. John’s Street, Bedford. The hospital and associated land, including the land now occupied by Bedford Park was donated to the church by Robert de Parys in the late 12th century. In the mid 19th century The Bedford Corporation (the town council) decided that the estate could be better administered and sought a Bill in parliament in 1860 to stop the rector, the Reverend Henry Pearse, from granting any more life leases. In 1879 The Bedford Corporation finally promoted a bill in Parliament to separate St. John’s church (the hospital) from the mastership of the hospital, effectively removing the property from the control of the church. In 1881 The St. John’s Hospital Act became law. This meant that the former hospice and its associated lands now became the responsibility of Bedford Corporation but controlled by twelve trustees.

Before 12

The idea to develop the land as a park came from Joshua Hawkins, five times Mayor of Bedford. As early as 1882, a year after the Act, the corporation called for designs for a park of 61 acres and the original plan was designed by William Barron and sons of Derby. After some difficulties with finding the necessary funds to establish the park, a final incentive was found with the advent of Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee in 1887. The park was laid out with carriage drives, trees and shrubs, turf and a lake for the sum of £7,000 and officially opened on 11th July 1888. The Marquess of Tavistock was presented with a golden key with which to unlock the main gates. When the park was opened there were two buildings, the West Lodge, and the Café Pavilion, financed by public subscription, the main contributor being the Duke of Bedford. John Lund, the Borough Surveyor, designed the café pavilion to be what the Bedfordshire Times described as a “useful, substantial and ornamental structure”. The building work was carried out by Coleman and Fathers at a cost of £400. It was first used as a public restroom with refreshments served through the window. Design Principles The design was made by William Barron and Sons, a firm who had many years experience in designing landscape gardens for both the public and the gentry. Amongst other sites, he also designed The Bedford Embankment in 1894. Bedford Park shows a similarity with Abbey Park in Leicester in its arrangement around an axial layout marked by After key parks buildings at either end of the axis.

LONDON 2012

HOST AN ATHLETE Howard Darbon, Coordinator of Pre Games Training Camps in Bedfordshire continues his series of articles on London 2012 by bringing readers up to date with preparations. . . . . . . The first nation to arrive in Bedford will be here in less than one month. The Maldives team of seven athletes, who will be participating in athletics, badminton, table-tennis and swimming arrive in early June. Throughout June they will be accommodated with Bedford families after which they move in to the University. Much of the team’s training will be in conjunction with the relevant local sports clubs who have been extremely helpful in making the necessary arrangements. It is very interesting that the athletes have been sent to the Training Camp without any officials or coaches – the advice I received from their Olympic Committee was ‘Keep them busy; keep them fully occupied!’ We will do our best! The response to date from readers of The Villager and others to requests for volunteers has been very encouraging, but there is still a need for more people with language skills – French, Portuguese and Arabic in particular – and for drivers to assist with our visitors. Sports Maker courses have been organised to give some basic training and encouragement for volunteers and these have been well supported with many participants deciding to assist at the Training Camps. So if you are able to devote some of your time during July and August please let me know – hdarbon@ ntlworld.com – and I am sure we will be able to accommodate you. Our ‘Host an Athlete’ initiative is also being well supported with many offers of social and cultural

18

activities for the athletes to relax and enjoy typical English experiences. To date, they will be able to learn to juggle, experience bell- ringing, learn to play golf, enjoy a typical English afternoon tea. Complete teams are being invited for a garden party and BarBQs, whilst visits to local businesses and a free meal for a team in a town centre restaurant are also available. Can you think of some activity that you can offer? If so, please let us know on bedford2012games@hotmail.co.uk It is interesting that the Bedford ‘Host an Athlete’ initiative has been taken up at national level with the publication of a guide, ‘Host a Nation Week’, 16 to 22 July, to encourage events in those areas which are hosting Pre Games Training Camps. Further information can be found at: http://trainingcamps. london2012.com Can your community group, local school, sports club or even street come up with innovative ways to celebrate this week? We might even be able to arrange for some of the Paralympic athletes to visit the event – just let me know. As excitement mounts and the Torch Relay commences its marathon journey, the actual Games themselves draw even closer. They present a once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of the biggest sporting occasion on earth. How are you going to celebrate London 2012?

WATER BUTT OFFER

FROM COUNCIL DURING DROUGHT The Environment Agency has declared that most of the South East and Eastern England is in an official state of drought after 15 months of below average rainfall. Around 25% of a household’s energy bill is from heating the water that is used during showering, washing clothes and dishwashing, so by using water more efficiently and cutting out waste and unnecessary use, you can conserve water, save energy and money on your bills. The following top 5 tips can help you reduce the amount of water you use around the home: • Turning the tap off while brushing teeth as this can waste 10 litres of water a minute • Fixing dripping taps can stop the waste of 4 litres of water a day. • Only using a washing machine or dishwasher when fully loaded • Installing a water displacement device or ‘hippo’ in your toilet cistern • Take a shower instead of a bath (note: a power shower can use twice as much water as a bath).

• Installing a water butt in the garden – can collect 5,000 litres of rainwater a year. According to Waterwise, if every household in the UK bought a standard water butt this would save 30,000 million litres of water each summer! To help residents save water and money, Bedford Borough Council has announced that discounted Water Butt Kits are on offer for the special price of £30. The kit is ideal for collecting water from your home, garage, greenhouse or shed and includes a stand which enables you to fit a watering can under the tap, a child safe lid, and handles for easy lifting. Easy-to-follow fitting instructions are supplied with each kit. To order visit: www. bedford.getcomposting.com or call 0845 130 6090 quoting reference BBC05PR. To find out more ways to use less water and reduce your energy and water bills, visit the Council’s Water Efficiency web page at: www. bedford.gov.uk/sustainability

What is a

Lasting Power of Attorney? There may come a time in your life when you lose mental capacity and are unable to manage your financial affairs or personal welfare, owing to some form of general incapacity or illness and you will need someone to act on your behalf. This person is called an Attorney. Growing older can mean problems for us and our loved ones... • Loss of mobility or illness can make it difficult to manage your affairs. • The prospect of unpaid bills can cause unnecessary stress and anxiety and delay someone’s recovery. • Even the young can encounter problems due to accident or illness so age is no reason to not have one. • An elderly relative losing capacity is difficult enough for loved ones to deal with, without the added worry that finances are becoming muddled. What is an Attorney? An Attorney is a person given power to act on a Donor’s behalf, either through a Lasting Power of Attorney for Property and Finance or Health and

Welfare if the Donor were to lose capacity. (The Donor is the person making the Lasting Power of Attorney). Lasting Power of Attorney Appointing an Attorney by creating a Lasting Power of Attorney ensures that if the worst were to happen and you lose mental capacity, you can rest assured that both your financial affairs and personal welfare are in safe hands. Making a Lasting Power of Attorney is the only way to legally state who you wish to look after your affairs if you lose mental capacity. Without a Lasting Power of Attorney it is up to the Courts to make decisions for you which can be very costly, time consuming and distressing for your relatives. These documents may be drafted in your home at a convenient time....do not leave it until it is too late! The Higgins - the new name

for Cecil Higgins Art Gallery & Bedford Museum

The new name and identity mark a new beginning for the art gallery and museum, illustrating the bringing together of the organisations and the buildings following a major redevelopment. Dave Hodgson, Mayor of Bedford Borough said:

“The announcement of the new name for the transformed museum and art gallery comes as the major redevelopment is taking shape, with a year to go to its opening in Spring 2013. The name provides a fitting link with the buildings’ past, and its announcement only serves to increase the sense of anticipation around what

will be a superb facility for local residents and visitors to Bedford of all ages to enjoy.” Cllr Doug McMurdo, Portfolio Holder for Art & Leisure added: ‘this is an important step in the evolution and shaping of Bedford’s new cultural quarter. While a great deal of work has been taking place to provide a museum and art gallery for the 21st century, alongside this we have been working on a name and identity that does justice to our collections. What is particularly striking is the way it connects and builds upon the history of the facilities, the story of the Higgins family, and the unique quality of the various collections.’ The Higgins family, the site at Castle Close and the development of the art gallery and museum are intrinsically linked. The Higgins family moved to Bedford in the 1820s, founding the brewery at Castle Close, the site today. The brewery remained in the Higgins family until 1928 when Cecil Higgins, then decided to sell it to Wells & Winch Ltd. in order to focus on his ambition to create a museum art collection ‘for the benefit, interest and education of the inhabitants of, and visitors to Bedford’. Cecil Higgins Art Gallery opened in 1949 in the house that had been his family home. Bedford Museum moved into the former Higgins & Sons Brewery in 1981. The staffing and operations of the art gallery and museum were merged in 2005. Now, as part of a £5.8million project, the previously separate buildings are also being joined together and redeveloped throughout. The

Funding the redevelopment project

The redevelopment project has been made possible by £3.2 million funding from Bedford Borough Council, as well as a grant of £959,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund, £100,000 from the Trustees of the Cecil Higgins Art Gallery, £500,000 from the Wixamtree Trust, £500,000 from The Bedford Charity, £350,000 from the Monument Trust, and £200,000 from Charles Wells Ltd, in addition to funding from a number of other sources. Keeping Pests at Bay

the Natural Way

More and more people have become concerned about using chemicals in the garden. Indeed, some gardeners have used chemicals rarely, if at all, for many years. It may be that you are worried about wildlife and conservation in general or you may also be concerned about using gardening pesticides on plants that children or pets might play near, or that you intend to eat. Greener gardening is not difficult, it is just different. Some of the most infuriating pests are to be found in greenhouses, conservatories and other protected areas, where they can thrive and breed rapidly. It is a great help to know that there are now many ‘natural’ controls available in the form of predators and parasites, which can be purchased from mail order suppliers (including www.pippagreenwood.com) and then released into your greenhouse or conservatory. These insects or mites do a great job of keeping many common pests at bay, including whitefly, red spider mite and mealy bugs. There are also excellent controls available for slugs and for vine weevils, both of which can be used successfully outside too. For those who are troubled by pests such as leather jackets (symptoms are deteriorating patches in the lawn, shortly followed by the lawn being ripped up by birds or badgers searching for the ‘delicious’ grubs) or chafer grubs (also responsible for damage caused by eating plant roots), there are now biological controls available to keep these at bay too. There is also a fairly new control available, which sends ants off in the other direction – wonderful if you like to lie on the lawn or enjoy meals in your garden without being nipped! I garden organically so I use these biological controls regularly. If your conservatory is also used as a place where you or the family relax or perhaps enjoy a drink or a meal, I’d say it is especially important not to fill it full of potentially harmful chemicals. If you want to try these controls then you will need to make sure that your greenhouse or conservatory is not already packed full of chemical residues - otherwise they may kill the beneficial creatures you are introducing. For whitefly you need a tiny parasitic wasp called Encarsia and for red spider mite you need another mite, this time the predatory Phytoseiulus. Introduce these in amongst the infested plants

and they will automatically go in search of the pests, soon getting their numbers under control and all without you having to lift a finger. It may sound off-putting to release wasps into your greenhouse or conservatory (or mites come to that) but these little creatures are tiny and will not bite or sting: they are only interested in the pests. Biological controls, including those for slugs and vine weevils, are all tricky for garden centres to stock, as what you are buying are living creatures which won’t survive if left sitting on a warm shelf for too long. Mail order is therefore the best way to buy generally, with your predators or parasites arriving in the post along with strict instructions for storage (they should usually be kept in the fridge) and for using before the use-by date expires. But don’t let this put you off: biological controls are excellent and are used by many professional growers. To ensure success you must follow the instructions precisely and make sure you introduce the control when there are a few, but not too many, pests around. If you wait until the air is choked with whitefly it can be a bit too much of an uphill struggle for the tiny little wasps. But the great thing is that you can relax in the knowledge that you’re not jeopardising any wildlife and that, in many cases, the biological control becomes selfperpetuating as the ‘critters’ you have bought breed and spread within the greenhouse. Now that’s what I call useful. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com and sign up for her newsletter (and receive a free ebook on organic gardening) and shop from the new products area which offers a great selection of biological controls (for slugs, vine weevils, red spider mite, whitefly etc) plus growing frames, cloches, raised bed kits and lots, lots more.

Aphids - Aphids are Small sap feeding insects, generally 1-5mm long with soft bodies, relatively long legs,

antennae and usually a conspicuous pair of tube like structures, the siphunculi, at the end of the abdomen. Body colour varies between species i.e. green apple aphid, (Aphis pomi), which infests ornamental apples, pears, rowan and hawthorn is a bright to yellow green colour, while large willow aphid, (Tuberolachnus salignus), is dark brown covered with fine grey hairs. Both young and adults feed almost continually and colonies can be found on most plant organs. Large volumes of sap are ingested by most species and excess sugar and water excreted as drops of what is commonly known as honeydew. This usually falls from the aphid or in some species is tended by ants which protect the aphids from other predators and parasites i.e elder aphid. Primary damage to plants results from the effects of feeding upon young tissue, which weakens and distorts new growth. Secondary effects result from fouling of the leaves and stems with honeydew which encourages the growth of a fungus known as sooty mould. Transmission of viruses carried from diseased to healthy plants on the stylet and in the saliva is also a problem. The main danger period for trees is from March-October and nonchemical control is seldom effective in these conditions. Winter washes based on spray oil plus a residual insecticide are used on fully dormant deciduous woody plants such as apples, pears, willows and birches during Dec-Jan. Contact insecticides such as soap (Savona) or spray oil are used on growing plants and kill aphids mainly by direct contact. Contact insecticides that are absorbed into the tree tissues giving a longer protection period. SEASONAL DELIGHTS Asparagus frittata

Serves 4-6 Prep time 10 minutes Cooking time 20 minutes

Ingredients 275g new potatoes 450g asparagus 5 large eggs 200g buffalo mozzarella

50g Parmesan, grated 2 tbsp chopped flat leaf parsley 2 tbsp olive oil Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 200째C/gas mark 6. Making sure the potatoes are clean first, boil them in salted water. 2. Trim the asparagus, then cut the stems into 1cm slices leaving the spear as a piece about 8cm long. Add this all to the potato pan for the last 5 minutes of the cooking time. 3. Drain everything and refresh in cold water. Thickly slice the potato. 4. Whisk together the eggs really well. Dice the mozzarella and add to the eggs along with 40g of the Parmesan, the parsley, potatoes and slices of asparagus. Season generously with sea salt and freshly ground pepper. Stir everything to coat with the egg. Lastly, gently stir through the spears. 5. Heat a 22cm diameter oven-proof deep frying pan along with the olive oil over a medium heat. Nonstick would be great, otherwise one which is naturally seasoned. 6. Pour in the egg mixture making sure some of the spears are sitting at the top. Leave to cook for around 10 minutes until the edges are starting to firm up. 7. Sprinkle over the last 10g of Parmesan and slide the frying pan in to the oven. Bake for 8-10 minutes until the frittata is golden and firm. 8. Serve straight from the pan with a crisp green salad.

RSPCA Bedfordshire North Branch

... why it needs YOU?

Don’t look over your shoulder, we are talking to YOU – and to make it even harder to find excuses, there are literally hundreds of ways you can help. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) was established in 1824 and specialises in rescue, animal welfare and preventing animal cruelty. In many ways this long history works against us because many people think we don’t need as much support as some of the lesser-known charities. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. The Bedfordshire North Branch supports animals in the North and East parts of Bedfordshire. We are a charity. This means that although we work under the umbrella of the national RSPCA (who give invaluable guidance and employ Local RSPCA Inspectors) we are responsible for our own fundraising, volunteer recruitment and the housing, veterinary fees and rehoming of all the animals in our care. We do not have a rescue centre and rely entirely on volunteer foster carers, a local private cattery and local vets. So, is there a need for our kind of charity in this region? Regrettably, the answer is a definite ‘yes’. Animal cruelty is the most obvious issue we face. Recently you may have read about an Old English Sheepdog found abandoned in this county. His hair was so matted, and body so malnourished, the only option was to put him to sleep. Our task is to prosecute the people responsible for such suffering. Another large part of our work involves rehoming unwanted animals – and this is a

growing problem in Bedfordshire. Divorce, moving home, death, children losing interest or financial difficulties may all lead to an animal being abandoned. Whatever the reason, the result is the same – another animal, through no fault of his own, requires our care. You may never have abandoned an animal, but if you’ve ever bought an animal from the Internet, or a pet shop, you could unwittingly be part of the problem. Bringing any animal into your home requires careful consideration as he will become part of your family for years, sometimes decades. If you think about it in these terms, your decision shouldn’t be as short-term as just wanting a cute puppy (within months he will become a boisterous dog), or choosing a cat for her colour (you wouldn’t choose your partner purely on their hair colour and disregard their personality). So, once you have made the responsible decision to get a pet (and all the work and cost that entails), please also be responsible enough to consider getting your pet from the RSPCA. Doing this makes you part of a solution. So rather than shrug off our earlier question, please consider what you can do to help us. The needs of the animals of Bedfordshire are huge – and so is the list of support we need. Whether you can spare some time, make a small donation or give an unwanted animal a loving home – this plea is definately aimed at YOU. 07769322424 or www.rspca-bedfordshirenorth.org.uk

CHILDREN RUN

with the stars

Young people from schools across the borough flocked to Bedford Park, on Monday 23rd April, to take part in a once in a lifetime opportunity – to run alongside world class Kenyan athletes, Philip Langat and Shadrack Kosgei. The athletes were making a fleeting visit to the UK to take part in the 2012 Virgin London Marathon. The event, organised by the Kenyan Community and Bedford Borough Council, witnessed approximately 600 children, across the day, jogging alongside the renowned athletes, to “run a Golden Mile” around the park. The Council’s Sports Development Team had been working with 24 schools, over a ten week period, in order to prepare them for the occasion. Also present on the day were a host of local sports professionals and personalities. The marathon runners and Kenyan Community had established a close relationship with Bedford since 2010, when the Kenya Athletics Kenya Chairman, Isaiah Kiplagat, and Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, signed a Memorandum of Understanding between Bedford and Kenya following a week-long

visit to Bedford by a group of world-renowned athletes. The agreement advanced educational, cultural, business and sporting ties. Mayor Dave Hodgson said: “We were extremely fortunate to host these inspirational athletes in Bedford the day after the London Marathon, and huge credit is due to Kenyan Community Bedford and to all the staff and volunteers on the day for making it all happen for the children. It was fantastic to see so young people from schools across the Borough enjoying the event. I am sure it was an experience that will stay with them for a long time, and I want to give special thanks to all of the athletes and sportspeople who gave their time and enthusiasm to help make it a great day for so many youngsters.” The Chairman of the Kenyan Community in Bedford, Jack Waiyaki, said marathon runners and the Athletic Kenya officials had agreed to take part in the community event, so as to help enthuse young people and increase their participation in physical activities and sports.
