ACEM’s inclusive approach is the key to embracing the opportunities of the future T the recent eighth annual ACEM (European Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers) conference in Brussels the primary answer to the dramatic declines seen in Powered TwoWheeler (PTW) sales in recent years, was seen to be the market's increasing focus on alternative energy solutions. Presentations on the environmental benefits of reducing car journeys (especially for commuters) in favour of motorcycle usage addressed the massive reductions in peak-time road congestion that can be achieved, and called for a stronger introduction of PTWs into European transport policy-making and planning. Meanwhile, research presented from Spain showed dramatic reductions in accident rates in the past four years, despite the dramatic growth (even through the years of recession) of the number of motorcycles on the road there. Emissions, congestion busting and journey times/impacts, and road safety (accident rates and product quality) all represent opportunities for the motorcycle industry to increase its role as a transport option in the future. However, the blunt instrument of seeking to "control" the perceived negative impact on all three that regulators assume motorcycling to have through the mechanism of choking off access with ill-conceived, poorly researched and inappropriate licensing, training, apparel and modification regulations, clearly place regulators at odds with the opportunities they have to deliver on the policy objectives they have been set. That the manufacturers and the trade associations in Europe are approaching the issues that the motorcycle industry undoubtedly faces, is of course welcome. Many 'good people' are doing the best job they can in the face of a complex matrix of often conflicting demands

A

and competing opportunities. ACEM's decision to host user group presentations, such as those by FIM and FEMA, at its recent annual conference for the first time is another welcome step along the path of generating a wider coordination of the industry's lobby efforts. In the parts and accessories aftermarket, especially in the performance and custom markets, the perception for many years has been that the trade associations have had one hand tied behind their back by their representation of OE interests when it comes to being able to develop a broadbased battle plan. There have been times when it has appeared that the industry is limited in its ability to deal with the issues that confront it to a sequence of reactive, single-issue skirmishes rather than a fully developed package of lobby, educational and marketing initiatives. Potentially motorcycling has a fantastically multi-faceted and wide ranging gospel to preach. One that on an integrated basis can not only answer the challenges presented to it by regulators and consumer perceptions alike, but actually come to the rescue of consumer and regulatory needs on a moving forward basis. ACEM is to be applauded in seeking to create as inclusive an approach to tackling motorcycling's future as it can, and it is to be hoped that if and when sales recovery kicks in, the momentum and unity created in adversity is able to drive the industry to exploit its undoubted opportunities.

news ROOM GERM AN REPO RT Stephan Maderner, editor of German motorcycle trade magazine Bike & BUSINESS, takes a look at the main issues currently affecting the industry in his country

New GERMAS Website GERMAS was once again voted one of the best brands in 2011 during a dealer survey by German motorcycle trade magazine Bike und Business in their market analysis of dealer satisfaction. Their new online catalogue is now available and features new products like the Caroline jacket, shown on the cover, which is a Cordura jacket with numerous features. www.germas.de

Bike market Germany, Spring 2012

The return of the Japanese? THE PTW market in Germany is full of hope! In the 2011 season the 125cc+ market in Germany achieved 3 percent growth, thanks to strong performances by European brands and Harley-Davidson. This is the first annual growth in Germany for 10 years, and January 2012 marked a promising start to 2012 as well, with new registrations 25 percent higher than January 2011. The Japanese brands, Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha in particular, suffered badly in Germany in 2011, but are looking to boost sales this year. onda has started a big sales offensive, and with key personnel changes at their German importer headquarters Suzuki and Yamaha are both looking for new blood to bring improvements. At Yamaha in Neuss Eishin Chihana Minoru has become President, and at Suzuki in Bensheim Jan Breckwoldt has taken over management from Paul M. Rowney. With Kawasaki having been the sole Japanese brand to have an improved performance in 2011, maybe now is the time when we'll see the start of a comeback by the Japanese manufacturers.

Husqvarna to hit the street HE news that BMW Motorrad returned to prerecessionary sales, having delivered a record of 104,286 motorcycles in 2011 (more than in any other year since the company began two-wheeled production in 1923), wasn’t paralleled at its Italian-based Husqvarna subsidiary. Having delivered just 9,286 motorcycles in 2011 (a massive 23% drop over the previous year’s 12,066), with November 2011 showing a 28.4% drop in deliveries year on year, and December a 26.1% decline compared to the year before, BMW are likely to accelerate Husqvarna’s entry into the streetbike sector. It has already followed in KTM’s tyretracks by launching the Nuda 900, powered by a heavily modified version of BMW’s F800 parallel-twin motor, and this was an issue that BMW Motorrad President Hendrik von Kuenheim was already aware of when I interviewed him last year. “In recent decades, Husqvarna has been a clear offroad brand, but if you look back through their history, 60 or more years ago they were also a street motorcycle brand, so, from that standpoint we will go back to its roots. “The offroad and enduro market has been hit very hard, and has shrunk worldwide by 60%. Governments are making it harder and harder to ride off road. If this is a future issue, then you have to look for alternatives, but you also have to understand the seasonality of the offroad industry, where you’re manufacturing motorcycles flat out for three months,

T

and then you’re basically done with production for the whole year. “You’re essentially building bikes in batches, and can never achieve a stable production process - yet you have the employees all year round, so you need a product that you can build all year round, too, in whatever volume. For Husqvarna, in the future, we want to manufacture sporty, roadorientated, perfectly engineered bikes, incorporating beautiful Italian design, and to create these we’ll tap into the box of what technology and components and engines we have available at BMW. “OK, for sure you’ll never see a Husqvarna with a Boxer engine, or a six-cylinder engine, but we’ll make some gorgeous looking, fast and fun Italian red road bikes!” The acclaimed Nuda 900, which entered production in October, was the first such bike to hit the marketplace, but Husqvarna CEO Klaus Allisat has already confirmed there will be more models using the same 900cc paralleltwin engine platform, and insider sources at the Varese factory reveal that the green light has now been given for the retro-styled MOAB 650cc single-cylinder street scrambler (launched as a concept bike at last November’s EICMA) to enter production over the next 18 months. This will be joined before that by the sporty-looking Strada entry-level commuter bike, powered by a slightly revamped version of BMW’s G650GS four-valve single motor, which was unveiled as a concept bike at the Paris Show at the start of December, and confirmed by factory insiders as due to

enter production next summer. All this comes as part of the process of repositioning Husqvarna as a twowheeled equivalent of the MINI compared to BMW’s own fourwheeled line-up - a more youthful streetbike brand, albeit with a substantial but still secondary offroad range. www.husqvarna-motorcycles.com

French market down 6.7% in 2011 REGISTRATIONS in France of powered two-wheelers with engines larger than 50cc totalled 173,096 in 2011, down 6.7% on the figure for 2010. Out of the Japanese OEMS, only Honda saw an improvement with its best-sellers the PCX 125 (5,486 units sold), the CB600F (3,660) and the CB1000R (1,657). Yamaha’s most popular models were the YP125R (8,033), XJ6 (3,987), XP500 T-Max (3,431) and FZ8 (3,366). As in other European markets, most European OEMs had another good year in France, with BMW, Triumph and Ducati all seeing double-digit rises and KTM up 45% and Moto Guzzi 72%, making it back into the French top 20 for the first time in decades. BMW best-sellers were the R1200 R and RT (3,220) and R1200 GS and Adventure

(2,547). Harley continues to flourish, with its most popular model the XL1200 in its different variants (2,234). Piaggio and its Aprilia and Gilera marques saw significant contraction on the French market in 2011, and Peugeot fell back after last year’s rally. Kymco, SYM and Daelim are also still in headlong retreat, and MBK sales continue to plummet. Including the 147,108 50cc mopeds and 10,890 Piaggio LT and Quadro 3D three and fourwheel scooters registered, total registrations in France over 2011 were 331,094. This compares with a comparable registration total of 327,220 in Italy last year, making the French market the largest in Europe for the first time. www.cotedelofficiel.fr

sponsored by International Dealer News Editor-in-Chief and founder Robin Bradley presents the first of a new series of reports on the latest motorcycle industry, company and product news in the United States. This month he has news of a new motorcycle Expo being started in America, and the first indications of market recovery there after a downturn prolonged by parts and accessory over-supply in a historically credit dependent retail environment ... HE Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) in the United States has seen former Cycle World Publisher Larry Little re-elected as Chair Person for a 10th year, with Polaris/Victory Motorcycles senior executive Mark Blackwell stepping up as the new Vice Chair. Little was in the news recently as the newly appointed VP and General Manager of a new motorcycle group division at US show organiser Marketplace Events. The company has announced plans to bring an EICMA/INTERMOT style national trade and consumer motorcycle expo to the United States for the first time. The American International Motorcycle Expo has been announced for the Fall of 2013, though as yet no venue details or exact dates have been released. n his former role as Publisher of Cycle World and MIC Chair Person, Little has historically been very closely identified with another US expo business, Advanstar, through Cycle World magazine’s long-term sponsorship of what is now known as the Progressive International Motorcycle Show series – a 12 city expo tour that runs from November to March each winter - and through a now finished financially beneficial relationship the MIC had with Advanstar’s ‘Indy’ Dealer Expo. Motorsport Aftermarket Group

T

I

(MAG) Sales & Marketing VP, and longtime apparel industry executive, Eric Anderson has rejoined the Board of the MIC, where he lines up with a number of noted American motorcycle industry executives, including Frank Esposito, Parts Magazine publisher and former racer Don Emde and Tucker Rocky CEO Steve Johnson. Under the full-time professional leadership of respected former Suzuki man Tim Buche (President and CEO of the MIC) the primary theme at this year’s annual MIC meeting (held at the ‘Indy’ Dealer Expo) was how the motorcycle industry in America can reach the 76 million members of the so-called ‘Generation Y’ with positive messages about motorcycling as a leisure Dollar spend option. With the domestic US market showing the earliest signs of some kind of recovery from the recession, addressing access to the $150 billion in annual spending power that ‘Gen Y’ is said to represent, is seen as critical to the market’s future. s is the case elsewhere, motivating young riders is a big issue in the United States – a market where motorcycling’s existing demographic is stubbornly locked into a lucrative but not necessarily futureproof median age in the mid-forties. Interestingly though, there is one particular very interesting, little recognised, and under-reported ‘factoid’ to emerge from the downturn

A

Written by Robin Bradley, Co-owner/Editor-in-Chief - robin@dealer-world.com

that got my attention when I first heard about it a year or so ago. In a market where it is generally assumed that off-road/dirt bike racing and riding is the primary pathway to the hearts and minds of the young, Harley-Davidson, that bastion of traditional American cultural and riding values (a brand most closely associated with older riders) has in fact been the fastest growing motorcycle brand among young riders in the United States in recent years. here is an important brand management and business model lesson to be learned from HarleyDavidson. One that (in notable contrast to the Japanese manufacturers) the other, mostly European manufacturers who have seen their market shares grow through the downturn – principally BMW, Triumph and Ducati – are well on the way to having embraced. Indeed more than a decade ago Ducati in particular openly pointed to Harley as a business model that they sought to learn from as the company started to turn its fortunes around. Harley have seen production and sales nearly halve during the downturn, but parallel to the increases in market share that the Milwaukee based manufacturer has seen in Europe (and elsewhere internationally) Harley’s market share

T

in America has grown ahead of a market that saw overall sales decline even faster than Harley’s own did. In January Harley-Davidson posted annual results that showed that the company had returned to sales growth in 2011, and elsewhere in the US market there are signs and reports that the bottom of what has been a broad u-curve of recession has finally been transitioned. Recovery is still fragile, and, as elsewhere, macro-economic factors could still send the market into reverse again. But there are now clear signs, in new model sales, used motorcycle values and demand, and from within the aftermarket parts, accessory and apparel/helmets markets that there is a recovery of sorts underway. t this stage it is mostly one based around the ‘staples’ of consumer demand that go to miles being ridden – such as service consumables, workshop activity in general, performance tuning and bolt-on accessories. However, after the fifteen years of growth that saw the US market go from around 300,000 new motorcycle sales a year to a peak of nearly 1.5 million six years ago, a recovery based on miles ridden rather than bikes financed is a sustainable recovery, and one that is to be welcomed for the market stability that it represents.

All Balls Honda CB bearing kit THE latest addition to the All Balls range of precision bearing upgrade kits is a tapered headrace bearings set, designed to fit a number of Honda CB models. Tapered bearings provide a higher load capacity and a longer life than the original uncaged ball bearing design. They are also far simpler to install, with no loose ball bearings to drop or lose and no issue of either over or undertightening of the original uncaged

bearing design, which can cause handling problems. The All Balls kit can be installed as an upgrade on CB250, CB400, CB500, CB750 and other models. The kit includes upper and lower tapered headrace bearings, two seals, and two spacer washers, although some applications only require the fitment of a single washer. Among the trends for 2012 were the continuing evolution in electric vehicles, the increasing importance of fluorescent garments and clothing with reflective strips (particularly relevant in France due to the new legislation which comes into force on January 1st 2013) and the continuing trend towards the "urban look" in the apparel industry. Notable new product introductions included Scorpion's 'ExoLedLite' acceleration/braking response luminous helmet, the Mac Adam "Mademoiselle" coat (which carried off two awards at the show), D3O's Pro-top underwear, Spidi's "Marathon" off-road jacket and trousers, Lazer Helmet's 'Ecran Lumino' photochromic visor, the Bloque Tendeur chain blocker by Zone Interdite and Facom's electronic torque adjuster system. As was seen at the GB Expo a week earlier

(at the NEC in Birmingham, UK), performance, tuning, service and workshop hard parts and equipment are dominant in the market at this time along with a trend back towards features, technical quality and brand profile in the apparel and helmets markets. While (as is also the case in the UK) new motorcycle registrations in France continue to be 'soft', dealers are benefitting from the vendor and retail consolidation that has been seen in the past five years and the mileages that riders are continuing to do despite the downturn. It remains unclear as to whether or not the market in France will see a return to new motorcycle sales growth this year, but most French parts and accessory manufacturers and brand owners, and those international vendors with strong brand profiles in France, are reporting that product sales are, at worst, likely to hold at 2009, 10, 11 levels with many actually anticipating some modest growth in the year ahead.

MFR Ducati Mutant the deviant desmo LAN Cathcart meets a South African Ducati dealer who has unleashed the deviant desmo - a chopper styled beast lurking within Bologna’s finest... Until recently, the thought of Ducati building a custom cruiser, let alone a chopper, would have been like Ferrari building a minivan. But once the Italian bike firm had unveiled their Diavel in disguise, a desmo VMax with half as many cylinders, suddenly it’s ok to think of Ducati as a custom bike company. At least, they hope so. Except their oldest-established South African dealer, the firm which introduced Ducati to the African

A

Continent almost 50 years ago, already went and did it for them – and, arguably, much more authentically. The MFR Ducati Mutant powerchopper is an improbable blend of many of Ducati’s trademark design features, including a trellis frame housing an air-cooled 90º V-twin desmo motor, a single-sided swingarm, carbon bodywork and Öhlins suspension, but with the raked-out forks and laid-back looks that Captain America might have approved of, complete with massive 300-section rear tyre and two metrelong wheelbase. A truly deviant desmo! Available for sale around the world

from MFR’s Johannesburg base (www.mfrmutant.com), either as a complete bike in the colour of your choice or as a chassis kit ready to mate with a donor air-cooled Multistrada model to source all the parts needed. But this kind of exclusivity comes not cheap: the price of membership of the Mutant mob comes in at 600,000 Rand, so $80,000 for a complete bike, or around half that for a chassis kit, comprising every needed component that the donor Multistrada doesn’t offer. So that includes the frame and swingarm, exhaust and silencers, handlebars, all 11 carbon fibre parts including the fuel tank and other

bodywork, a total of 52 CNC-milled billet aluminium components, two Braking brake discs and Brembo calipers, the 8in halogen headlight, those massive wheels with Metzeler tyres, the Öhlins front forks, the electronic rear-view TV camera, LED sidelight and indicators, plus various specialised nuts and bolts, all included in that kit price. owever, in spite of its extreme appearance, a day spent cruising the High Veldt highways north of Jo’burg in sultry winter sunshine, revealed that the Mutant ticks all the boxes in combining practicality with style, with the undoubted presence delivered by the fat-tyred facelift matched by the punch and performance of an authentic Ducati. The question of how to enter the custom cruiser segment, while still staying true to their brand’s sporting heritage and competition credentials, has been puzzling Ducati management for more than three decades, ever since the elder Castiglioni brother, Gianfranco, commissioned the prototype DB900 >>>

soon after he and his brother Claudio took over Ducati in 1985. Powered by the bevel-drive desmo V-twin motor from the Mike Hailwood Replica sportbike, the DB900 project was dropped when that expensive-tobuild engine was discontinued, and since then Ducati has never seriously focused on the custom market. Until now – or rather, until Dave Frisoli first did it for them four years ago. Frisoli’s dad Riccardo is an Italian immigrant who in the 1960s imported the first Ducatis into South Africa, and in due course founded MFR/Moto Frisoli Racing, the longest-established Ducati dealer in South Africa (SA), run today by Dave and his brother Tony. n addition to winning countless SA National road race titles from the 1960s up to today, until now the Frisoli family has focused primarily on performance, with Dave, as the firm’s chief technician, also creating a dozen unique Ducati-powered Streetfighter specials for himself and his customers (as well as a Paris-Dakar style dirtbike that was the South African take on a Cagiva Elefant.) alongside the racebikes. “After making all the various Streetfighters, it was time to do something different,” says Dave, 48. “I like all types of motorcycle, but the only kind I couldn’t get with a Ducati engine was a cruiser. “So four years ago I decided to build one with the Multistrada as the donor. I wanted an air-cooled motor, plus on

I

that model there were various components that suited what I wanted to do with the design, so I went and picked up a Multistrada wreck as a start.” As a hands-on engineer rather than a computer wiz, Frisoli decided to build the bike himself, following the design that was in his head. “I didn’t have drawings or schematics to work from. I’m not artistic enough to put it down on paper, so I had to physically make the bike to show everybody what I wanted. “The basic brief before we started was to build a Ducati-styled cruiser for customer sale, using as many components and styling themes from existing Ducati models as possible. I’ve essentially built it by hand by myself, including shaping the bodywork, and making the forward foot controls that I decided to hang off the motor to give it its cruiser look - rather than build a cradle style frame that didn’t suit the Ducati engine design. “So I’d make parts up, then take them to the engineering shop, sit down with a CAD designer to get them formatted, then use CNC to cut the component. That way we can replicate everything in the bike identically for customer versions.” Being synonymous with Ducati’s trademark technology Frisoli opted to design his own trellis frame, building it out of hefty 2.5mm wall thickness seamless mild steel tubing. “I realise now that it is over-engineered for the power and weight of the engine,” he

says, “so more than likely the production version will use chromemoly tubing that’ll make the bike lighter. It weighs in at 215kg with no fuel, which on average is 80-100kgs lighter than most production cruisers that you can buy today, which all produce around 80 bhp at the crank and 100Nm of torque. “We have 110 bhp at 7,900 rpm from the Multistrada 1100 engine in the Mutant, which equates to 95bhp at the rear wheel on a Dynojet, with torque of 115Nm at 4,800 rpm. So in terms of power to weight ratio, we’re substantially better than most.” old as an MFR product, the Mutant is a genuine desmo V-twin chopper, with a wet clutch motor sourced from the 1100S Multistrada, together with engine mounting bolts, carbon cambelt covers, wiring loom, throttle bodies, airbox, ECU, master cylinders, the complete eccentric hub from the rear swingarm plus rear brake plate and caliper, the tank cap, and rear Öhlins shock. The dash has been modified to position the white-faced analogue tacho in the centre, flanked on the left by the digital speedo and infocentre, and by the 3.5in LED screen for the American made Boyo Vision rear view camera on the right, which Frisoli fits to avoid spoiling the clean lines of the Mutant’s appearance by having to fit mirrors. Having grown used to a similar setup on my Vee Two Super Squalo, I found the Mutant’s system even better

S

– it gives you a broader view behind you, and the screen is shaded better in sunlight than on the Aussie streetfighter. Going back to the donor bike, the Mutant frame will also accept the dry clutch 1000cc Multistrada motor, but if you choose not to buy an S-model, you’ll have to source the Öhlins shock separately if you’re building your own. But you won’t be able to use the standard Ducati swingarm because it’s too short, and won’t give space for that wide rear wheel. Instead, Frisoli has designed and made his own tubular steel singlesided swingarm as it is more in keeping with Ducati’s traditional frame styling. This delivers a 1980mm wheelbase with the long, raked-out, 48mm Öhlins fullyadjustable forks, offering 190mm of >>>

Ducati have been puzzling over how to get into the custom cruiser market ever since Gianfranco Castiglioni commisioned the prototype DB900 cruiser in the 1980s <<< wheel travel set at a 37-degree rake

with 151mm of trail. He also made the massive ten-inch wide rear wheel from a stock fivespoke Multistrada rear, while the narrower but still muscular front sixinch rim started life as a Marchesini five-spoked wheel off any 996, 748 or 998 sportbike. “We also then source a pair of 18in aluminium wheels,” explains Dave, “and there’s a company in South Africa which cuts the rim of the 18in wheel off, welds that to the 17in rim on the lip, and then splits either side of the weld of the rim, and adds in a band to the width we need – so each one of those wheels has six welds all the way around. “The company that does this has also built its own welded aluminium wheels for a land-speed record car they’ve done 450kph on in South Africa, so I thought if they’re good enough to do that, they’re qualified to modify the Ducati wheels for the Mutant! “The reason for doing that is I wanted to keep the five-spoke wheels that are recognised as part of Ducati’s heritage, and use Metzeler 18-inch rubber. We could have used a carbon wheel made here in Jo’burg by BST, who make all our carbon parts - but it’s not recognisable as a Ducati component, though we do offer it as an option.” he leading-axle Öhlins forks fitted to the Mutant were originally made for KTM’s Paris-Dakar 990 Rally racer, and at a metre in length are a third again as long as the stock 750mm long Multistrada forks. Frisoli has modified them internally to reduce the travel, increased the spring rate and changed the damping – ultimately to turn it from an off-road design to a road fork. He also ordered it with only one brake caliper mounting point on the left hand side, because he wanted to

T

18

show as much of the front wheel as possible – but at the same time to deliver superior braking response compared to other cruisers. He did this by fitting just a single front brake, a 330mm Braking wave disc gripped by Brembo’s most powerful caliper, a Monobloc onepiece four-piston unit off the 1198 Superbike, but also installing TWO twin-pot rear calipers, both gripping the 220mm Braking wave disc, one of which is linked to the front brake caliper hydraulics to deliver a 50/50 pressure split without a compensator, for integral braking via the front lever. Frisoli cleaned up the look of the engine motor by stripping it down and ceramic-coating the external surfaces of the whole engine, while at the same time applying performance ceramic coatings internally on the valves, piston crown and skirts, the combustion chamber, and both ports, using various different coatings aimed at creating a 5% increase in horsepower and reduced temperature by increasing cooling by around the same amount. he result looks good aesthetically without the bling effect of too much chroming. The stock engine isn’t tuned internally, but has an MFR exhaust with 50mm bore headers designed following the old style of Ducati systems, where the two exhausts are unequal in length, with each individual pipe ending in a silencer, and a balance pipe to equalize the pressures. The main reason was to get a clean look with the twin pipes running up the side of the frame, but, with the big bore exhaust Frisoli gained some performance, with twin Two Brothers silencers under the seat, available in a choice of a carbon fibre, titanium, stainless steel or aluminium wrap. Climbing aboard the Mutant for my cruise into the high country – at

T

INTERNATIONAL DEALER NEWS - MARCH 2012

1753m/5750ft in altitude, Johannesburg sees around a 20% drop in engine performance compared to sea level – I discovered an improbably comfortable and natural seeming stance compared to most choppers I’ve riden before. The plush seat gives you the impression of sitting deep inside the bike, and the footrests aren’t excessively far forward, thanks to the subframe carrying them that’s clamped to the front of the motor, rather than to the frame – again, for a clean appearance. Without any mirrors fitted, the big, wide handlebar looks sleek and swoopy, made by Frisoli from 32mm steel tubing that’s reduced to 22mm via an internal sleeve for mounting grips and switches. f the old cliché about ‘controls falling to hand’ seems applicable here, it’s for a good reason “While building the bike, we were fortunate enough to test ride virtually every production cruiser currently marketed, almost every one of which had some ergonomic fault,” says Frisoli. “We soon realised that the foot pegs had to be adjustable over 150mm, with some variation up and down if need be. Then we tried five different versions of handlebars with different lengths, angles, heights, and widths, playing with all these angles until we were satisfied with one that feels right. The minute you sit on it,

I

your hands go to exactly the right place, and nothing feels awkward.” Dave has tested the validity of his claims for comfort over long distances, with 10,000km of test mileage racked up so far on the prototype including some 1,300km rides down from Jo’burg to Durban, through the winding roads of the Valley of a Thousand Hills in Northern Natal, all aimed at making the Mutant ergonomically comfortable as well as dynamically functional. It has an excellent gear change, but in converting the final drive from the six-speed gearbox to a Gates toothed belt rather than chain (for cleanliness and ease of maintenance) Dave Frisoli has guessed wrong at the overall ratio, so that as it stands the Mutant is way overgeared; you need to be doing 150kph before you can select a true top gear without any real trace of transmission snatch. “I initially thought to lengthen the ratios to keep the rpm down for the cruiser style of riding - but I went too far, and the ratio’s too long,” he confesses. “For production, we’ll go to the next length of belt available from Gates, and up the size of the pulleys accordingly. his fat-tyred custom bike handles surprisingly well, thanks to some smart thinking by Dave Frisoli in fitting that fat 200/50-18 Metzeler front rubber to match the even more monstrous 300/35-18 rear. >>>

Fitting such a design statement of a back tyre on all other bikes results in some pretty difficult handling characteristics in turns because, since with a narrow front tyre for styling purposes, as soon as you try to lean it over onto the shoulder of the tyre, there’s such a sharp transition going from a flat to a curved shape that it feels momentarily unstable, before suddenly falling on its side into the turn. ut not so with the Mutant. “The first criteria was to build a Ducati-styled powercruiser – but the second was, if we’re going to attempt this, it must work like a proper motorcycle, it must handle right, and we must get rid of the bad handling characteristics of the majority of production cruisers,” says Frisoli. “The tyre size is a styling thing - I always wanted to build a very chunky looking motorbike, and that’s what this is with the 200 front tyre. But the dynamic advantage we gained by using the 200 front tyre was to minimise the offset between front and rear, making it almost as close as on a normal Ducati Superbike, which has a 120 front and 200 rear, with a 40mm offset either side – on the mutant we only have 50mm either side with the 200 front and 300 rear set-up. That’s one of the reasons why the bike feels closer to a normal sportbike, unlike many of the others where they only put a big

B

wheel, and your track goes completely weird the minute it goes off centre.” So that’s why the Mutant doesn’t collapse onto one side when you’re leaning it into a turn, and also why it holds a fine line once you lay it into the corner, and if you decide to change that line, it’ll do so easily, like a motorcycle should. The steering is reassuringly purposeful, with that big front tyre, and while the Mutant’s geometry pushes the front wheel thanks to the long wheelbase and the wide rims, it’s perfectly possible to lean it through tight turns. The long wheelbase aids stability without making it too hard to corner. he Öhlins shock has good compliance which, coupled with the weight of the bike, helps that fat rear tyre to ride bumps well. There’s no steering damper fitted, but you don’t need one with all that rake and trail on such a long wheelbase bike. Painted in the same Marlboroinspired tangerine red livery as the Desmosedici RR, the Mutant comes with a big 30-litre fuel tank made from carbon fibre whose weave is clearly visible in the chequered flag imagery on the top surface of its Monsterderived shape. The big round 8in halogen headlamp comes from Australia, where it’s designed to provide light for rally cars. LED strips in the seat fulfil the

T

requirements for indicators and taillight, and the carbon single seat can be removed and replaced by a hand-stitched leather-covered dual seat incorporating a backrest, with storage space in the tail section containing the easily installed spring loaded passenger footrests. erhaps the Mutant’s best feature, though, is its build quality, for this is an imposing, original, two-wheeled package that’s exquisitely conceived, yet extremely refined in design and manufacture. It’s not just a chopper with a big rear tyre that happens to have a Ducati engine, but a properly thought out, well engineered bike which positions the desmo brand in a market sector it’s never been in before.

P

“In creating the Mutant, we wanted to stick with the more classic chopper type cruiser genre,” says Dave Frisoli. “What’s impressed me most about it was that I didn’t realise how much fun I’d have riding it. I knew I wanted to build this bike and offer other Ducati or other cruiser riders something different, something that works that’s built around Ducati’s styling and traditions. “But, I didn’t realise how much fun the bike would be to ride, especially on longer trips through mountain passes and so on. It’s comfortable on the open road, and on the highway just cruising along, but you can have a lot of fun and play with it through the mountains. It’s an unexpectedly true all-rounder.” •

Today this is still one of the company’s three major activities, alongside equestrian products and body armour, and it employs a total of 50 staff in Rushden and nearby Kettering. According to Managing Director Andy Gregory, the company became involved in sports protection fortuitously. “In the 1980s a university professor contacted us to say that he had carried out some tests on our shoe insoles, and said they were made from some of the most shock-absorbent material he had ever come across. “At the time we were looking to diversify, as the shoe industry in the UK was in decline, and we decided to look into the fast growing protection sector as a possible area of interest. “Our materials specialist Richard Andrews then developed the first of our soft body protectors, which proved a hit, and he has been involved in every one of our expanding product range since then.” Originally set up as T-Pro in 1987, the Forcefield Body Armour brand was launched in 2003. From the start, the company has used the exceptionally tough world of Speedway as a testing ground for its body armour designs. This association

INTERNATIONAL DEALER NEWS - MARCH 2012

I n t e r v i e w a n d w o rd s b y A l F ra n c k continues to this day, with many of the world's top speedway riders, including champions in Speedway GP, still insisting on Forcefield because of the ability of its soft armour technology to offer repeat impact protection, unlike hard armour, which needs replacing after every hard knock. “When Richard first began banging the drum for soft armour, his was very much a voice in the wilderness – most people thought hard plastic much more effective. Now the case has been made, and it’s much less of a hard sell,” says Gregory. Forcefield is also popular for skiing, snowboarding and mountain biking, as well as other contact sports where impacts are a common occurrence. s well as offering repeat impact capabilities, Forcefield armour is flexible, moulds to the users' body, stays in place and is designed for comfort, as well as protection. This is a function of the mixture of advanced materials and design that goes into every separate product. The main material is a PVC Nitrile compound called Nitrex Evo, exclusively supplied to Davies Odell by its long-standing Taiwanese partner, using a patented waffle construction technology which spreads the effect of the impact evenly across its surface, offering exceptional shock absorbency. The unique triangular Nitrex outer grid has been designed with special vent holes at the base for extra breathability and also reduces the overall weight. Also important is multi-density technology, where different specialised high-tech energy absorbing materials are combined to give special properties, while at the same time reducing bulk. The combination of Nitrex and multi-layers also enables Forcefield to offer lightweight protectors that flex with the body, offering exceptional comfort. Each new product is extensively trialled and tested. “Our second home is the SATRA testing facility up the road,” says Gregory,” and we test everything until we know it’s the best. We would never cut corners and put out a cheaper product that didn’t give the best possible protection for its category.” All this has resulted in products such as the topof-the-range EN1621-2 CE Level 2-certified Pro Sub 4 back protector, which, Forcefield says, is the

world’s only back protector to achieve a true 3.38kN average multiple impact rating. ollowing its launch last year the UK’s magazine Bike said: “This is the world’s best back protector – no other can absorb more force in an impact,” while Italy’s Euromoto gave it top position in a test of the 10 most prominent back protectors and said: “This is the best on the market”. But Marketing Manager Stuart Long insists there is no room for complacency. “We might have the best products, but we’re a bit of a secret in Europe and elsewhere, and need to raise our profile. “We must build up the branding and look of the product. We’ve had a technically superior product from the start, but what we haven’t done so well is establish it in the market, and that’s what we’re doing now. “The original presentation has been quite conservative, with limited shelf appeal, so we want to make it more arresting to customers by improving both the look and packaging. Nothing too over-the-top, but we need to emphasise the technical nature of the product, and Forcefield in the customer’s mind as the best.” Gregory has a clear expansion plan to internationalise the brand. “When I took over as MD two years ago, my goal was to make Forcefield the biggest sports protection brand in the UK, then Europe and then the world. That’s our aim, and we have a passionate team behind that. “We want to be in the position where, if a

F

motorcyclist or skier decides he needs some armour, he or she will automatically think Forcefield.” here are two salespeople in the UK and a network of 200 outlets, 150 motorcycle and the rest winter sports. Gregory says there are still vacancies for good, strong dealers in the UK, and he wants to grow the total to around 300. “It is important to get bricks and mortar stores to ensure our products are fitted properly. We don’t want pirate internet sales where inappropriate products are ordered and accidents happen as a result,” he says. Sales Director Matt Dawson has spent the last two years developing the company’s European distribution base. “Our coverage of Europe is good, bar a few holes in countries such as Poland and Spain, and the foundations are mostly in place. In 2010 and 2011 we signed and trained up most of our distributors, and in 2012 we expect them to expand sales and take on more of the range.” Dawson says his regular training trips with distributors to visit dealers have demonstrated that the best way to sell the protectors is to get the customer to try it on in the shop. “As the heat moulds it to his body, he notices it less and less, and a few minutes later we’ll say: ‘Can you still feel it?’ Usually he says ‘No’, and he’s hooked! “Our Italian distributor has started off really well in a tough market, given the number of established Italian and German brands available there, as has our new Hungarian distributor. We are

ROAD TRIP very confident the brand will do well in Europe over the next few years.” Forcefield is also well established on the West Coast of the USA, where it is distributed by Johnson Leathers, and is looking for representation in other parts of that country. ithin the motorcycle sector, the brand is aimed mainly at the road market. Off-road protection products tend to be different, and that market is well covered by existing off-road specialists, according to Dawson, although there are some crossover products in the Forcefield catalogue. There is an extremely low rate of product failures and returns. “Last year we had about five returns, and the no quibble replacement policy on top of the standard two-year warranty meant we recently replaced the elastic on a five-year old back protector. This is very popular with dealers – they know they can rely on us,” Dawson says. Feedback from customers, dealers and distributors is constant, and an important influence on updates and new products. “At the moment we’re hearing that a couple of our protectors are a bit heavy – their new versions will be lighter,” he adds. The company will remain focused on protection and ancilliary technical underwear and clothing for the immediate future. “We have no plans to do neck or knee braces. Perhaps one day, but we don’t want to spread ourselves too thinly,” says Gregory. “Ultimately, we will want to expand from motorcycle and winter sports into other areas. We’re looking closely at the equestrian market,

W

rugby and other contact sports, but at the moment we are concentrating on those first two markets.” Davies Odell also distributes Vibram soles in the UK, as well as Germot motorcycle clothing from Germany. Gregory thinks both have a bright future on the British market: “Both are strong brands, and we think they will prove popular,” he says. n conclusion, Gregory thinks the company has started well in its race to market dominance. “Our strategy is to produce the best product we possibly can – and that’s an incredible strength. We have the best performing products on the market and the test results to prove that. If we can keep this lead in technology, and we intend to, the rest needn’t be too difficult. “Dealers like the honesty of our products. The claims we make are very straightforward and verifiable,” he says. ”Motorcycling is a risky business, and we never want to lose sight of the fact that if we do our job well we are saving lives. The testimonials we receive from survivors of accidents can be very moving and often make us feel really proud, but also remind us of the critical importance of continuing to get it right.”

Davies Odell is outgrowing its atmospheric old factory building in Rushden, which dates from the 19th century and is still used to make shoe components. The lobby’s frescos are wonderful examples of Victorian-era industrial optimism, and demonstrate the international reach of the company’s products at the height of the British Empire. A more modern facility nearby is currently being sought.

CE standards for protection LL Forcefield Body Armour is CE approved, which is essential to maintain a credible product that has proven performance. The CE testing standards for limb and back take into account protection, comfort and ergonomic requirements. Armour that conforms to the standard is proven to reduce the incidence and severity of injuries. With authentic CE- approved limb or back protectors, the end user knows that extensive research and testing has gone into the development of the product and that it has been accredited by an authorised body. Fake and non-approved CE protectors almost without exception have no capability to protect. No reputable company should sell non-conforming products where a standard protecting the consumers exists. But the many different CE standards can be confusing. Here is a brief guide to the EN numbers on Forcefield products.

A

EN1621-2 relates only to back protectors. The impact energy used in the test is 50 Joules. If the transmitted force recorded after the impact is between 9 KiloNewtons and 18 KiloNewtons it can be classified as a Level 1 back protector or insert. If the transmitted force recorded is below 9 KiloNewtons then it can be classified as Level 2. The lower the transmitted force in KiloNewtons the more protective the product is. The current Pro Sub 4 back protector currently transmits about 3.38 KiloNewtons in multiple impact tests, making it the best on the market, according to Forcefield. EN1621-1 relates to mechanical impact against motorcyclists’ protective clothing, and there is only one performance level for this standard. It requires that, given a 50 Joule impact the protector doesn't transmit a mean figure greater than 35 KiloNewtons. You may come

across Type B, Type A and CE Type protectors. Type A and Type B refer only to the size, shape or coverage. All Forcefield protectors meet the Type B template for coverage within the standard. Type A is a much smaller template more suited to children's sizing. CE sizing refers to full CE Motorcycle Clothing where the armour size relates to the garment size. Instead of one size fits all, the armour coverage increases through the size range. EN13595-1 relates to protective clothing for professional motorcycle riders and looks at not only the protective content of a product, but takes into account the construction and whether the garment is designed to withstand the impact. The garment should be designed to ensure that the armour stays in place to do the job that it is required to do. EN340 Protective clothing - general requirements. This is a series of tests that ensure that the materials and components used do not in themselves cause harm to the body. For instance some products in the market could contain banned substances/chemicals that could be harmful to the user.

The Pro L2 K was dubbed Best Buy and Top Performer in an investigation by Ride magazine

What is a Joule? The standards relevant to the motorcycle protectors make reference to impact energy of 50 Joules. This is the amount of energy that strikes the protector when tested in a laboratory. The best analogy is that it is like an average house brick weighing 2.5 kilos being dropped from 2 metres height. What is a KiloNewton? A KiloNewton is a measure of the amount of transmitted force that enters the body following an impact. It is the amount of transmitted force that enters the body that determines the severity of an injury when receiving a direct blow.

European PTW market declined a further 9 percent in 2011 MARKING a fourth consecutive year of recession-driven decline, the powered 2-wheeler (PTW) market in the EU saw a further decline of 9.5 percent last year, with 170,000 less units sold for an EU-wide total of 1.7 million. These figures were released by ACEM, the European Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers, during their annual industry meeting in Brussels at the end of January. Registrations of new motorcycle models began to fall dramatically from the final quarter of 2008, according to the Association, in important markets such as Spain, France and Greece. The Association says that this decline has 'lead to a revolution in the European market of motorcycles and scooters'. With emissions-based government subsidy programmes ending in Italy two years ago, France has emerged as

Europe's largest market. The greatest losses in 2011 being seen in Italy, (-17 percent), Spain (-16 percent) and the Netherlands (-13 percent). Despite the rate of decline slowing compared to 2009 (-15 percent) for Europe overall, and 2010 (-14 percent for Europe overall) and some signs of improvement in the German market this winter, ACEM say that Europe has lost one million PTW sales since 2007, with last year's market representing a net effective 37 percent loss of the volumes achieved in 2008. The theme at this years eighth annual ACEM conference was "Innovating our Mobility" - a focus on how motorcycle manufacture innovation can change mobility as society's transportation needs continue to evolve. BMW Motorrad CEO Hendrick von Kuenheim, the current President of ACEM, said that "due to the economic crisis our industry is experiencing the most dramatic recession in its history". Addressing the issues raised by the new EU rules on motorcycle typeapproval, Mr von Kuenheim called on policy makers to "adopt simple and pragmatic solutions aimed at achieving a stable, predictable and feasible environment for manufacturers". Making reference to the recently adopted White Paper on Transport, which encourages the use of smaller and more efficient vehicles, he drew the attention of policy makers to the fact that "Powered Two-Wheelers perfectly fulfil these requirements". Cleaner engines, enhanced safety systems, and a shift towards new architectures were the main trends identified by Jacques Compagne,

General Secretary of ACEM. He went on to say that "despite the low contribution of PTWs to overall traffic emissions, amounting to less than 2 percent of CO2, manufacturers are committed to playing their part in reducing the environmental impact. "Hybrid, electric and fuel cell are likely to become a growing market share in the future" Compagne stated. Among the electrically powered vehicles displayed by manufacturers were the KTM Freeride, the Peugeot e-Vivacity, and fully electric scooters from Honda and Piaggio.
