Keeping up the pressure EPTEMBER saw many actions by riders’ rights groups across Europe against EU proposals that threaten the health of the motorcycle sector. These include planned legislation banning modifications and home servicing, as well as introducing compulsory ABS and roadside compliance checks. On the 10th and 11th of September an estimated 50,000 riders held go-slow protests in all the major cities across France, organised by the French Federation of Angry Bikers (FFMC ). On top of proposed EU restrictions, French riders are also facing the possibility of new national regulations stipulating compulsory high visibility clothing, the banning of motorcycles over seven years’ old from urban areas, compulsory retraining if the bike has not been used for a given period, punitively high fines for infractions and a prohibition on filtering through lines of traffic – thus negating one of the main advantages of motorcycle and scooter use in the urban environment. The FFMC is also running a hard-hitting advertising campaign pointing out the contradictions behind these measures. An earlier demonstration in June by French riders gathered almost 100,000 protestors all over the country, and it is clear from the reaction that the government is finally getting the message. Since then, ministers have issued ‘clarifications’ over some of the contentious issues, claiming for example that the hi-viz jackets will not have to be worn; reflective wristbands will apparently now suffice. And the recent appointment of a keen biker as Minister of Sport may signal that the French Government has finally woken up to the importance of the sector’s concerns. Similar protests were also organised in other countries, including Belgium, Spain and the UK. The UK protest ride on September 25th, organised by the Motorcycle Action Group (MAG), assembled 40,000 riders (including four MPs) on a go-slow across the UK’s motorway network. MAG says these protests have had an immediate effect, when politicians see the numbers of voters involved. The committee stage of the EU legislation has been postponed by six weeks pending further consultation, the parliamentary vote has been put back to next year and MEPs will read and respond to the proposals rather than

immediately rubber-stamping the act.The organisation also says the UK’s Department for Transport is unhappy with the EU’s proposals and could bring pressure to bear behind the scenes. But the UK government is also implementing its own policies that are having a damaging effect on the motorcycle sector. The country’s new two-part test has made it far harder for people to ride a motorcycle or scooter. Only 26,000 riders passed their test in 2009/2010, compared to an annual average of 55,000 in previous years. This is compounding the decline in sales of motorcycles due to the recession, and is accelerating the closure of dealerships across the country. This situation is mirrored in Spain, where the test is even more complex and opaque than in the UK, and new bike sales have also collapsed. So the situation is still threatening, but the protests and other actions are having an effect. All those concerned about the future health of the sector need to maintain pressure on their national and EU representatives to ensure further damage is not inflicted on what is and will remain a vital part of the transport matrix.

governments are finally getting the message

Meanwhile, the EICMA show will welcome visitors to the Fiera Milano exhibition centre from 8 to 13 November, showing the best of the Italian, European and world motorcycle industry to more than 500,000 visitors, if the organisers’ predictions are correct. As IDN went to press, the organisers said there would be 1,174 exhibitors from 36 countries in seven halls covering a total area of 135,000 sq.m. We will, as usual, be covering the show in detail in the next issue, to give those unable to attend a feel for the new products on offer, the trends and the general buzz at the biggest and most important motorcycle industry event this year. And for those of you who will be there, I look forward to saying ‘ciao’ to you once again.

FREN CH REPO RT Didier Ganneau, editor of French motorcycle trade magazine L'Officiel du Cycle, de la Moto et du Quad, takes a look at the major issues currently affecting the industry in his country.

Powered Three-Wheelers ONE interesting aspect of the French powered two-wheeler market is that 6% of units sold are in fact… three-wheelers! Out of a rough total of 200,000 registrations annually over 50cc in 2009, 2010 and 2011, between eleven and fourteen thousand have been Piaggio MP3 LTs. More than half of the 100,000 MP3s built since 2008 have been sold in France. Geographically, sales are very localised, with more than 50 % sold in the Paris region and 17% in the south-east. The strength of the French commuter market and the fact that that most car licence holders are allowed to ride 125s and MP3 LTs of any capacity without having to pass a separate test has made LTs very popular. For similar seasons ATVs and Can-Am Spyders are also very successful in France, with sales respectively of 32,000 and 800 in 2010. The result is that those commuters who can afford one have found it both convenient and fashionable to ride LTs. Speed and acceleration are exciting, and the family is reassured because three wheels are safer than two. As a result, Marabese Design is planning to launch its Quadro four-wheel scooter on the French market, and Peugeot has high hopes for its own version of the LT, due to be launched next year.

Suzuki falls out with VW A WAR of words between Suzuki and Volkswagen has escalated after Suzuki demanded that its estranged German ally publicly retract its accusation that Suzuki violated the terms of a 2009 partnership agreement between the two companies. The partnership collapsed on September 12 when Osamu Suzuki, Suzuki’s chairman, called for a ‘divorce’ and asked VW to sell its stake of almost 20% in Suzuki that it purchased as part of the strategic tieup less than two years ago. He said VW was blocking Suzuki’s access to its technology and encroaching on the smaller Japanese group’s independence. A VW spokesman said the company did not intend to sell its Suzuki shares Suzuki CEO Osamu Suzuki has said VW is and remained willing to encroaching on the Japanese group’s muchseek talks with the cherished independence Japanese carmaker. BMW to create 3,500 jobs N REPORT AMERICA

According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, US motorcycle thefts in 2010 were 24% lower than the figure for 2007. In 2007, 65,678 motorcycles were stolen, against 56,093 in 2009 and 49,791 in 2010. Schuberth North America had its first anniversary on October 4 at the company’s newly expanded HQ in Aliso Viejo, California, with a presentation made by Marcel Lejeune, CEO of Schuberth GmbH. Ducati President Gabriele Del Torchio has said the company now sells more bikes in the United States than in Italy. 20% of all Ducatis are sold in Italy, and 80% exported, he said, adding that 2011 had been the best ever year for Ducati and forecast a record 42,000 units sold over the year. To accommodate sales growth of over 40%, LeoVince USA has increased warehouse capacity by 6,000 cu.m. and appointed Jeff Viets operations director and Rick Marlin sales director.

THE BMW Group has announced that it will hire about 3,500 new staff this year. About 1,200 of these new employees will be based in Munich, Germany, where BMW has its headquarters, main plant and most of its development activities. Other newly hired employees will join the company in Leipzig, where production of its first all-electric series takes place. The BMW Group Personnel Director Harald Krüger said: “We need new associates to help us meet the consistently strong demand that has developed for our vehicles and to offset natural wastage within the company. In addition, as we prepare for the future, we are focusing on

Piaggio improves Italian market share POWERED two-wheeler market figures for September published by Italian industry association ANCMA show that Piaggio has 30% of country’s market, up almost 3% on the figure from September 2010. This is mainly due to its excellent performance in the scooter segment,

where it has a 36.9% market share (up 3.4% ), comprising 51.3% of the under 50cc market (+2.8%) and 29.6% of the over 50cc scooter market (+3.4%). In the high-performance motorcycles segment (over 700cc), the Piaggio group took 7.3% of the

THE 10th Fighterama show will take place at Kernwasser Wunderland in Kalkar, Germany, on 5th and 6th of November. The programme includes stunt riding, Supermoto racing, and a wide range of exhibitors from many countries are once again expected, bringing with them the latest trends and technology from the world of motorsports. The custom show will feature some of Europe’s most innovative custom designs, according to the organisers.

IF 10% of car drivers gave up their car for a motorcycle or scooter, traffic congestion would be reduced by 40%, according to a study carried out in one of Belgium’s most congested urban areas. The study, by consultancy Transport & Mobility Leuven and the University of Leuven, shows that encouraging car drivers to transfer to powered twowheelers (PTWs) is a feasible and affordable way to address congestion. The investigation, commissioned by FEBIAC, the Belgian car, motorcycle and bicycle distributors’ association, was conducted on the Leuven-Brussels section of the E40 highway during rush hour, based on the traffic statistics of a regular work day during the month of May 2011. By extrapolating observations for that route to the entire road network, the study concludes: “15,000 hours lost in traffic per day could be avoided in Belgium, equivalent to a total time savings of approx. E350,000 per day.” Another of the study’s findings was that congestion would disappear completely if 25% of short distance commutes went by PTW. Jacques Compagne, Secretary General of European motorcycle manufacturers’ association ACEM, said: “FEBIAC’s study demonstrates that powered two-wheelers are an extraordinary resource for easing jams, making traffic more fluid and generally improving the quality of life in our cities. Policy makers can learn a good deal from this paper.”

Brammo buys QuantyaParx US ELECTRIC bike manufacturer Brammo has bought QuantyaParx from KOM Enterprise Group, and will be relaunching it as BrammoParx. The QuantyaParx hire and ride facilities for electric off-road motorcycles have up until now used KOM-owned Quantya electric dirt bikes and the 15 existing parks are situated in Germany, Austria, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. The acquisition does not include Quantya itself. Craig Bramscher, founder and CEO of Brammo, said, “We are excited about this acquisition and we will be introducing our latest 6-speed offroad Brammo motorcycles - the Engage and the Encite - to BrammoParx locations at the earliest opportunity. We will also be making the BrammoParx franchise opportunity available in other countries, including the USA.” Bramscher continued, “We know the demand for off-road parks is growing and KOM has both a unique business

model and a highly successful track record in this market.” Brammo has taken on Hans Eder and his team from KOM, who have been the driving force behind Quantyaparx. The move is the latest in Brammo’s

push into Europe. In June, the company began manufacturing its Enertia and Enertia Plus bikes at a plant in Hungary run by electronics manufacturing giant Flextronics. www.brammo.com

BMW Group electric concept models BMW Concept E

BMW unveiled two new electric concept models at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, the BMW Concept E scooter and Husqvarna Concept E-go dirtbike. The Concept E looks like a streamlined maxi scooter. The green side panels cover the battery and drive unit and are made of acrylic glass with a rear-set metal grid. Few powertrain details have so far been divulged, but BMW says the high volt technology (60+V), battery capacity, and regenerative braking system will give the scooter a range of

approximately 100km, and that the scooter can be charged from a standard wall outlet in just three hours. It is designed to have enough power to overtake other vehicles while carrying a passenger. The concept scooter features some high-end extras, such as two LCD display screens on either side of the digital dash that show the road behind the rider.

BMW affiliate Husqvarna also displayed a new electric dirtbike in Frankfurt, the Concept E-go, weighing only 80kg. www.bmw-motorrad.com

STAT ZONE

EU market down 6.2% Over the first six months of 2011, a total of 879,773 new powered two-wheelers were sold, down 6,2% on the first half of last year. This represents three years of decline in the PTW market have led to a loss of almost 300,000 unit sales compared to the first half of 2008, which represents the disappearance of 25% of the EU market, according to European motorcycle manufacturers’ association ACEM. In the main 50cc+ category a total of 582,390 units were registered, down 7.7% on the 630,899 figure for the first six months of 2010 (see table below). In the under 50cc category, registrations fell 3.3% to 297,383, with Spain down 31%, Italy down 15%, Germany down 5% and France up 10%. According to ACEM, the main cause of the prolonged contraction lies in the negative performance of the main southern markets of Italy, Greece and Spain. Their impact on the aggregated EU figures overwhelmed the largely flat or positive performances in northern European markets. ACEM says that one positive trend is the rapid development of the electric powered two-wheeler segment, which is seeing registrations double every year. Some11,000 units were reported for the first 6 months of 2011 compared to last year’s 5,567, accounting for 0.3% of the EU market.

Commenting on these figures ACEM Secretary General Jacques Compagne said: “Despite the relentlessness of the crisis, PTW manufacturers are focusing their innovative capacity on further developing the safety, fuel-efficiency and environmental performance of their vehicles. Our data shows that electric powered two-wheelers are amongst the first vehicles to profit from this technology on a large scale due to their very nature and pattern of use. Despite these first promising indications, incentives and a dedicated recharging infrastructure are required to achieve a critical mass. Only a serious commitment from authorities will enable the take-up of these advanced products.” www.acem.eu

Benelli: Back on track HERE aren’t many women anywhere in the world running a mainstream motorcycle manufacturer, and the Chinese CEO of Benelli, Yan Haimei, is perhaps the only one. Universally known in Italy as Madame Clara (it’s a long story!), she took over running the Pesaro-based company in the wake of its purchase in October 2005 by Qianjiang (pronounced ‘Chin-jung’, but called simply QJ by all its staff), one of China’s largest manufacturers of powered two-wheelers. Winner of the 2003 China Exporter of the Year competition, and an official sponsor of the 2008 Peking Olympics, Qianjiang began making motorcycles only in 1985, but is now a market leader in China, exporting overseas under the Keeway name, mainly to the USA, South America and Europe. In addition to its main motorcycle and scooter products, the company, which is capitalised at over $750 million, and has been listed on the Chinese stock exchange since 1999, also manufactures ATVs, electric bikes, lawnmowers, golf carts, generators, pumps and various garden products. Its ultra modern city-sized factory is equipped with sophisticated machine tools imported from Germany, Italy and the USA. Since taking the helm of Benelli,Yan Haimei has guided the historic Italian marque (which this year celebrates its centenary, making it Italy’s oldest existing motorcycle manufacturer) through a period of uncertainty caused by the global economic situation, an uncertainty which has put a brake on the introduction of the two new Benelli model families developed under Qianjiang ownership, the Mono single and the Due parallel-twin.These employ dedicated all-new Benelli engines developed in-house by the company’s former technical director Pierluigi Marconi and his R&D team,

but although the bikes have been sitting in cold storage for the past three years awaiting the green light for production, this hasn’t been forthcoming, prompting Marconi to leave Benelli in 2010 to work for Spanish offroad marque Gas Gas. His replacement as General Manager of Benelli, Claudio Consonni was formerly with Yamaha Italy, where he was responsible for producing several locally built Yamaha models like the Bulldog 1100 V-twin cruiser, TT600 offroader, and TZR125 entrylevel race replica, and was appointed by Yan Haimei to work on Benelli’s relaunch, starting this year. The chance to talk to her on the record in her office at the Benelli factory in her first press interview since she occupied it, showed a readiness at last to discuss Benelli’s future, which of itself indicates that things are looking up for QJ’s Italian subsidiary. AC: Madame Clara, what is your role here at Benelli? YH: I came to work here at Benelli in 2007, and since then I’m in charge

INTERNATIONAL DEALER NEWS - NOV/DEC 2011

of managing the firm. I worked for QJ since 1999. I started the sales operation for QJ products in Europe, and I managed all their European sales, until now I’m actually manager for all QJ exports worldwide, so in around 70-80 countries. AC: So you're a very important person in QJ! YH: No, I just make sales! AC: Well - without sales, there's no business! How many scooters and motorcycles did QJ sell in 2010? YH: Last year we sold 1.5 million units altogether, and of that around 250,000 units were exported, mostly to Europe and South America, but other areas as well. About 80% of them were motorcycles, and the rest scooters. In Europe it’s more scooters, and in the other areas it’s more bikes - mainly 125cc and 250cc models. We have lots of different brands - we have QJ, Keeway, Benelli, all according to different areas and different models. AC: How many employees are there in the entire QJ company? YH: Nearly 8,000 altogether, with about 500 engineers included in that. These 8,000 workers reflect the fact that we produce almost everything

ourselves, unlike many Chinese companies, so the frame, the engine, the gearbox, all the painting, even the plastic parts, we produce it all inhouse. Of course, we also purchase some parts from other factories, but not so much. That is the reason we have such a large workforce and such a big factory, with 670,000 sq.m. of covered space at our home in Wenling, around 500km to the south of Shanghai, near the coast. But now we’re building a new plant in Chonqqing, in the eastern area of China. Soon the new factory will open, and it’ll make an additional 500,000 units of production each year. So our company is expanding all the time. AC: When you purchased Benelli at the end of 2005, what was QJ’s objective? YH:At that time, the President of QJ, Mr. Lin Hua Zhong, was in Italy and he took the chance to visit Benelli, which was then under liquidation. So we looked into buying it, and after five months of investigation we decided to purchase this company. Why? Firstly, Benelli is a well-known brand in Europe, with a famous history. Secondly, they have a good technical team - that’s a key point why we were interested, because we think we can learn from them. And the third point is that Benelli can be a place in Europe for QJ in the future to develop high quality products to meet the needs of

Benelli’s Pesaro HQ employs 90 and the company is forecasting production of 2,000 motorcycles in 2011, with possible production of a maxi-scooter range in the future

CATHCART REPORT

the European market, because this is so different from China – but then, as the market in China turns towards bigger bikes, we can be ready for this. After QJ purchased Benelli, we wanted to relaunch the company, and to restart production of the TNT 1130, after attending to the quality problems it had back then. We also wanted to start production of the Tre-K, because at that time Benelli had almost finished the development of the Tre-K 1130, and Tre-K Amazonas. But it was very difficult to restart production again in 2006, after it had stopped for some time, and to get the right people to come back to the company. But we persevered, and things were going well, we had improved the quality of Benelli’s products, so we restarted production at the end of 2007 and began sales again - but then just at that moment, in 2008, we had the global economic crisis, and things unfortunately were very bad for Benelli in 2009 - we only produced around 500-600 motorcycles. But this was the worst moment - in 2010 we had much better production and sold close to 1,000 bikes, with more exports, and in 2011 we will reach more than 2,000 units. So Benelli is on the way back, and we can celebrate our 100th birthday with confidence for the future. AC: What’s the size of the Benelli workforce right now? YH: There are around 90 people working here, but only on bikes, because all our scooters are built in China, unless our engineers there need technical support, in which case Benelli staff will help with technical suggestions or testing. AC: So, all Benelli scooters are made in China? YH:Yes, but we are thinking that for the maxi-scooters of more than 250cc, we may consider production here in Benelli. At the moment, our biggestengined scooter is 400cc, but our scooter range is under development all the time. We know that the maxiscooter market will have a big jump soon because of BMW entering the

market, so for performance motorcycle companies like Benelli, it’s a good opportunity. AC: Since QJ purchased the company, Benelli has made a big investment in developing new engine platforms. In the past four years you produced prototypes of the single-cylinder Mono in three different versions, and the parallel-twin Due in two different capacities, 600cc and 750cc. But no model powered by any of these engines has yet entered production. What are QJ’s intentions for these designs? YH: It’s really a problem that we’re addressing now. Our Mono singlecylinder engine comes in 449cc, 500cc and then 570cc capacities, all of which were actually developed for racing, in Supermono and Motocross and Enduro. But brands that want to come into this sporting area of the market need a long time to establish themselves, and you must spend a lot of money going racing with new designs to prove their value, and establish a tradition of victory with them. Unfortunately, there’s not so much of a profit margin with singlecylinder models, so we could not see the justification for doing this. So I think developing these racebikes was a little bit in the wrong direction. But, if we adapt this Mono design for normal production and everyday use in Europe, and also Australia and the Americas, I think it will be a perfect engine, because it has very good performance, and has been built strong enough to be raced, so it should be very reliable in street use. Right now we are doing some modifications to make it a production street engine, after which I believe we will have a very good chance in the market, because we will give it a really good price, and I think we can have a good quantity of sales. KTM showed that there is a very good market for this kind of street single product, so now that we will not go to the racing area, but instead to street use, we hope to have that, too.

AC: Will the Benelli Mono singlecylinder motorcycles be made in China? Or even just the engine, in the same way as BMW has its G450 motor built in Taiwan by Kymco? YH: No, it will be entirely manufactured and assembled here in Benelli, although some parts will be produced in China, as well as here in Italy. AC: When do you expect to begin assembly? YH: I think that by the end of this year we will have completed development and finished all the tests - we needed to change a lot, so it took some time. Then from that point on we will start with customer sales immediately from the start of 2012 – but in other areas, not Europe at first. We will start with regions like South America, the USA and Australia, and we will offer streetlegal Supermoto and Enduro versions – but made for normal use, not for professional racing. AC: What about the twin-cylinder Due project? What are your plans for that? YH: I think now we have some good news for the many people who have been interested in this model. I believe that at the end of this year we’ll see the bike ready for production! We will present the final customer version at the Milan show in November. But, I’m sorry, I think that firstly we will start with sales in China and in other areas, and then we will make small sales in the beginning in Europe to test,

because we want to be sure that the quality and reliability is really good – after that, we can then start to launch again in Europe. Benelli has been launched in China very successfully, with three sales outlets in Peking, Shanghai and Jinan, and two more coming in Nanjing and Chengdu. We have sold more than 200 motorcycles there this year, based on our current range – but in future we will also develop special models for the Chinese market. AC: Which size of engine will you use for the Due of the two you had under development, 600cc or 750cc? YH: 750cc first. So now we are spending a lot of time and manpower to finish it, because I think to make a perfect engine is not an easy task, and we need big support from the suppliers, especially if we want to produce some parts in China. You need time to develop parts, and QJ is the first in China to try to produce parts for bigengine motorcycles. AC: Won’t you use some of those 500 engineers in China to help develop the Due engine? YH: Yes, absolutely, but we are also working together with Italian engineers and suppliers to develop it – for sure the production must be here in Italy, but to sell in other markets. We expect this to commence in January 2012. But for Italy and other European markets, we want to make a new model, because we showed this one first back in 2006. We will sell the existing model in China and other >>>

areas like South America for example, but in Italy and Europe we want to start with a totally new model, with a completely new design. It will take us a little time, but we are already developing a new styling version. AC: So let me be sure I have this right – Benelli will manufacture the existing Due prototype model here in Italy, using its present styling, but this will only be sold to China and other developing markets, whereas for Europe and other more mature motorcycle markets, you are developing a new version with fresher styling, but using the same 750cc parallel-twin engine? YH: Yes, because for Europe we must make a new Due. I don’t know exactly when we can begin making this, but maybe we can start production in 2013. It depends if we have any delays with suppliers. AC: Benelli’s three-cylinder Tre engine is now 14 years old. Will you redesign or replace this anytime soon? YH: I know that for a lot of people, Benelli stands for innovation and a

sporty image in the market. But at this moment, if we want the company to continue and to survive, QJ has more experience in developing smallengined motorcycles and scooters, and for this we can move very quickly. So if we have the full range of scooters, including maxi-scooters, and a full range of motorcycles including Mono, Due and the existing Tre models, then we will have a big chance in all markets to increase sales. After that,

when the financial situation of Benelli is acceptable, then immediately we will return to developing new motorcycle models, because at the moment, if we start with new largeengine motorcycle projects, it takes a lot of time and a lot of investment, and I don’t think the company can support this financially. So for QJ, the strategy is clear - with Benelli and our own brand smaller motorbikes and scooters, we can obtain good sales in

all regions around the world. If so, then we will have good profits for the company, which will give us the financial possibilities to continue to develop 600cc, 750cc, 899cc, 1130cc and other bigger engines. AC: Does that mean Benelli plans to develop a larger capacity version of the existing threecylinder engine? YH: Yes, it’s already our intention to do so - but first we need to change the financial situation to make the company really profitable again, with the existing versions of the Tre, and the smaller-engine Mono and Due. This year we’ll produce more than 2,000 units of 899cc and 1130cc models, and we hope that next year we can also increase the quantities still further, but with some face-lifting. Benelli was sleeping a little bit while markets were down, but now it is awake and starting on the road to recovery, with new models based on Benelli’s qualities of innovation and sportiness. Benelli’s comeback is starting at last!•

Benelli TNT R160 road test The newly launched R160 version of the Benelli TNT – standing for Tornado Nuda Tre – delivers the kind of riding thrills that are nowadays totally unique, from a bike that’s totally mad, totally extreme. Una moto totale.... The R160 tag comes from the new model’s claimed horsepower numbers – well, give or take a few ponies – and the fact that its engine tuning pretty much replicates that of the Benelli TNT racers that have been running at the front of the Italian Roadster Cup championship for the past couple of years, a SuperNaked race series identical to the Motul Australian

Naked Bike Championship which Adrian Pierpoint won on his Benelli TNT 1130R in 2008 – a full-on National title chase then run as a support class alongside the Aussie Superbike series, just as many feel it should be in the World Superbike race programme, too. Throwing a leg over the R160’s 810mm high seat results in a comfy yet fairly upright, close-coupled yet sporting stance that’s more Brutale than Monster. That resemblance vanishes, though, as soon as you thumb the Benelli’s starter button, and that glorious-sounding engine lights up, with the unique trademark gruffsounding grunt of a torquey triple immediately to the fore, underpinned at higher revs out on the highway by the invigorating exhaust howl that makes a three-cylinder bike so special, and encourages you to use a gear more than is really necessary, just so you can blip the throttle on downshifts, in spite of the slipper clutch making this quite superfluous. However, the R160’s engine note is definitely more raucous-sounding than the stock TNT, thanks no doubt to that cored exhaust system – this is an old-fashioned Italian bike, in the sense that you get the feeling they just waved the noise meter at it before signing the homologation papers! On the other hand, there’s nothing old fashioned about the much reduced

INTERNATIONAL DEALER NEWS - NOV/DEC 2011

engine noise of the R160 compared to any previous Benelli triple I’ve ridden – the whirrs and clicks and chain rattle from the camdrive that were all there before have now been dialled out, presumably as part of Chinese owners Qianjiang’s ongoing process of product refinement. The R160’s engine performance lives up to its exhaust note – acceleration is blistering, with thirdgear powerwheelies a fact of life if you gas the Benelli up hard, and don’t remember to weight up the footrests and/or cover the rear brake pedal with your toe, to force the front wheel earthwards when needed – at which point, if you land with it even slightly crossed up, you may regret that the R160 inexplicably comes without a steering damper fitted as standard! But the waves of torque that gush from the TNT’s meaty motor will let you practically peel up the tarmac from almost any revs, delivering serious shove any time, any gear, any way. Yet the waves of torque make the Benelli forgiving to ride - whether hard and fast, smooth and slow, there’s more grunt that you know what to do with anywhere in the revband, although holding a constant throttle in traffic will get the engine hunting, indicating the low speed fuelling needs attention. But at higher revs the engine mapping is excellent, and in spite of its

impressive acceleration, the R160 will pull literally off the 1,400 rpm engine idle speed, and takes full throttle in top gear from just 2,500 rpm upwards with zero transmission snatch - yet with that Nm90/9.15kgm on tap at just 3,000 rpm, it’s already delivering serious torque at less than a third of the way to redline. Benelli claims that by working on the exhaust compensators’ diameter and position, its engineers have removed the hole in the power curve which the stock TNT 1130 has between 4,000rpm and 6,000rpm – although in complaining about that in the past,I’ve always been told it was emissions related, so maybe they found a way round that as well. With the extra horses, the R160’s power delivery is certainly a little more layered than on the stock motor, with the 5,000rpm mark on the analogue tacho the gateway to that impressive top end performance. But as soon as the needle hits seven grand, the Benelli goes mental, with a rush of revs as power builds steeply to the hardaction 10,200rpm limiter, which you’ll want to flirt with hitting. That’s not only because there’s more power on tap the higher you rev the Benelli, but if you shift up around 9,000rpm, that’s when you’ll get the front wheel waving in the air as you hit the higher ratio just on the 8,400rpm peak torque mark. It’s fun doing that, though! Thanks to the pretty effective

CATHCART REPORT balance shaft, vibration from the three-cylinder engine is minimal at lower revs riding around town, or flicking from side to side along the scenic, switchback, seaside Strada Panoramica linking Pesaro with Gabbice Mare along the Adriatic coastline. Still, once you get above that five grand threshold, the harder you rev the Benelli, the more noticeable the tingles become through the footrests and handlebar, especially from 7,000rpm upwards where they start to be a nuisance – although you’re so busy holding on tight to try to tame this tricked-out triple, you’ve not really got time to think about that. Anyway, that pales in annoyance alongside the single most annoying item in the new Benelli’s locker, which is the extremely noisy dry clutch, whose jangling rattle of the plates soon gets wearing at slow speeds. You can learn to live with that, though – but not with its extremely stiff and heavy operation, which makes squeezing the lever repeatedly in city traffic a real penance, as well as a test of endurance for your left hand.Yet the pneumatic so-called ‘anti-lock system’ fitted to the stock TNT 1130 works just fine in eliminating rear wheel chatter on the overrun, so why fit this at all in the first place? The gearchange is fully up to J-bike standards, though, with a very smooth, precise shift action, but it’s just a pity about the clutch, especially when it’s all so unnecessary. When I track tested Adrian Pierpoint’s Australian title-winning TNT 1130R racer, from which he’d extracted exactly the same 158bhp horsepower as the R160, I found he’d simply inserted an extra clutch plate to cope with the greater punch, without significantly altering the leverage ratio of the clutch lever. Job done – so why did the factory need to do anything different? Still, with that sweet gearbox you don’t need to use the clutch for upward shifts, and that noticeable

extra kick of power above 7,000rpm is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face. Decide you need to get somewhere fast, and the R160 will take you there, with truly murderous acceleration that leaves Porsche 996 Carreras in your wake once the Greek trucks move out of the fast lane on the Pesaro-Ancona autostrada, at which point the German sports coupé becomes a tiny speck in the Benelli’s surprisingly effective (because so evidently designer-esque) rearview mirrors. Just expect to have to hold on tight at much more than 150kph speeds, because the vestigial wind deflector - not! - above the quite readable if slightly dated-looking dash, with its analogue tacho and digital speedo, isn’t as functional as the mirrors, and with the quite upright riding stance, you get serious bodily blowback. But surprisingly, this doesn’t affect the TNT’s stability - it tracks dead straight even at 200kph, and even without any steering damper fitted, it doesn’t flap the bars if you hit a bump cranked over, or get caught in the slipstream of a car or truck you’re

overtaking. The Benelli R&D team did a pretty good job of calming the handling on the TNT - not all Naked bikes are as inherently well behaved as this one, especially when you use the good leverage of the wide handlebar to exploit the light, precise steering. While less convenient for urban streetfighting thanks to the limited steering lock – three-point turns become seven-pointers! – and that stiff clutch, this really is a great bike for switchback hillside roads, where that combination of meaty torque and deft steering will hustle the Benelli between hairpins faster than almost anything else on the road. But I’d still have liked a steering damper for when the front wheel lands crossed up….! I’d also have liked some other tyres on the R160, because the Michelins fitted to the test bike resolutely refused to heat up on a sunny 24ºC degree day, even after half an hour of hard riding along that twisty panoramic road. OK, they work acceptably just swinging through turns, but if you really start going for it, as you surely will do on such a high performance motorcycle, you’ll get the rear wheel spinning up out of a second gear turn, and worse still, I lost the front wheel twice taking too much turn speed on the way back to Pesaro – fortunately, I managed to save it each time, and bring the Benelli back alive. But this bike deserves better, with all that lovely torque, and especially with the fully adjustable suspension now fitted, which while rather stiff on the factory default settings, can easily be dialled in to a high degree of compliance – Benelli’s settings on the stock TNT’s non-adjustable forks go to the other extreme and are much softer, but on this bike they’ve gone the right way, leaving it up to the rider to dial in a softer setting for better response and improved ride quality, if needed. It’s a good setup.

However, I can’t say I felt that way about the R160’s Brembo radial front brake package, which until properly warmed up has a fierce response to the point of being overbraked. Again, I locked the front wheel a couple of times in early turns along the Strada Panoramica (no ABS is presently available, even as an option), before repeated use warmed everything up to the point that the brakes were vividly effective, rather than dangerously snatchy – and that was in the dry: I really wouldn’t want to ride the R160 on a wet road. This takes me back to a decade ago when radial brakes were introduced on the Ducati 996R, and I was the first one to found out the hard way at the Valencia press launch that they hadn’t got the cocktail of pad choice, master cylinder and caliper design right, making it all too easy to lock the front wheel. A decade on, for whatever reason, the Benelli T160’s pretty fierce brake package felt eerily similar. Conceived as a kind of Superbike streetfighter, to mark the historic Italian marque’s Centenary which it celebrates this year, and costing E14,800 in Europe for either of the two colours it comes in - white with a red frame, or red with a gunmetal chassis – the Benelli TNT R160 is at the high end of the streetfighter market pricewise, though way less than the heavier, less powerful but definitely more refined MV Agusta Brutale 1190RR costing E18,500, and comparable with the E15,290 Ducati Streetfighter with the same power, but weighing much less. But with Triumph’s market-leading, less potent, but arguably more user friendly new Speed Triple weighing the same and retailing at E11,495, the Benelli will have a tough job competing for sales from anyone who isn’t simply looking for something a bit different. •

OptiMate Lithium SOME lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery manufacturers claim that long-term maintenance charging is not required, but Tecmate says this only holds true if the battery remains on the shelf and is never discharged below 12.7V or 0% capacity. In a stored motorcycle the vehicle circuitry, including digital display, LED warning lights, clock, alarm / immobiliser, will slowly drain the battery until eventually it cannot deliver sufficient cranking power to start the engine. Tecmate’s new OptiMate Lithium, which is

being launched at EICMA 2011, has a maintenance programme that delivers current to the vehicle circuitry, protecting and keeping the battery at 100% charge. With 5 Amps of charge current available, OptiMate Lithium’s Ampmatic programme recharges and balances cells within the battery quickly and efficiently. For smaller batteries, the Ampmatic programme automatically lowers current to match the Amp-hour capacity. Within the Ampmatic programme, the SAFE T feature ensures the battery is recharged

within the recommended safe voltage and temperature parameters and will safely recover unbalanced cells in an overdischarged LiFePO4 battery, thereby extending the life of a neglected battery whose voltage reduced below 10V (even as low a 0.6V). Pinasco MIVV exhaust options 177 V.I.T. for GSR 750 cylinder kit PINASCO says its new 177 V.I.T. (Valve Intake Transfer) kit for Vespa PX models is a revolution in the world of Vespa tuning kits because of its components. The cylinder has a new direct valve intake into the cylinder, a solution first applied to Vespas by Pinasco in the eighties, and the new kit is an updated version with modern technology and components. The cylinder is made of special cast iron and is shaped for optimal performance on all surfaces from mountain roads to motorways. This is possible because of the specific configuration of the compression and exhaust strokes. The valve pack is made of aluminium,Viton treated inside,to guarantee good fluid dynamics, while the reeds are made from high quality carbon. A new kind of carburetor is included in the kit; a depression 27/32 with integrated fuel pump to allow the correct quantity of fuel in any situation and avoid engine seizure. THE new disc lock cable adaptor kit from Xena is an ideal upgrade accessory for riders looking to extend the security level and reach of their Xena disc lock alarm, the company says. Designed to turn most of Xena’s disc lock alarms into a more complete security system, the kit connects the alarmed disc lock to a 1.5 metre hightensile steel cable with a unique stainless steel adapter. When attached snugly to the disc lock, the adapter allows the rider to connect the cable to a fixed object. By linking the cable directly to one of Xena’s alarmed disc locks, the cable and adapter kit can provide an alarmed ‘tripwire’ effect to help deter even the most determined of thieves. The cable is flexible enough to be passed through a wheel, a frame section, or around helmet or luggage, and is resistant to cutting and sawing attacks. It’s also plastic coated, to prevent damage to paint and metalwork. Kits are available for a range of Xena disc locks,

including the XX6, XX10, XX14 and XX15 as well as the budget XZZ6 model. When not in use it is compact, lightweight and flexible enough to be stashed under a motorcycle or scooter seat, or in luggage. Interviews and words by Al Franck - al@dealer-world.com

Located at Flero near Brescia in Northern Italy, GIVI is one of Europe’s most successful motorcycle accessories manufacturers, and is still thriving despite the difficulties that have affected the sector worldwide over the last few years. During a recent visit, IDN took a look at how the company is managing to keep ahead IVI was founded in 1978 by Giuseppe Visenzi, an Italian Grand Prix motorcycle road racer, who in 1969 finished third in the 350cc World Championship, behind Giacomo Agostini and Silvio Grassetti. After leaving the race world in the early 1970s, he set up a dealership and workshop in Brescia selling Honda, Kawasaki and BMW models. Later on, spotting a niche in the motorcycle accessories market, he set up GIVI, named from the first two letters of both parts of his name. Giuseppe now owns and runs the company, alongside his son Vincenzo and daughter Hendrika. The company produced a number of accessories for motorcycles near Flero including fairings, engine guards and carriers, as well as distributing products for other manufacturers.“That was the real beginning, but we soon concentrated on our own products,” says Vincenzo. “Then a few years later in 1982 we made our first motorcycle top boxes, developing the first in the Monokey series, the E28, E34 and E38, and the simplicity and effectiveness of the Monokey rapid release system made it an instant success, which it remains to this day.” ny current Monokey luggage item can be fitted to a fixing plate from that era, and vice-versa. This flexibility is an important part of the company philosophy, with the company still willing to provide parts and support to keep 30-year old products fully functional. “This is much appreciated in the market, and has helped build our reputation as a company that takes customer support seriously,” Vincenzo says. Twenty years later GIVI introduced the Monolock system, with a similar concept, but mainly for smaller and lighter duty luggage systems. The Monokey and Monolock fixation systems have underpinned the company’s success worldwide, from the most

Fifteen years ago GIVI acquired a long-established competitor brand, Kappa, which is fully integrated within the group and positioned as a medium-level luggage and accessories range. Kappa also uses Monokey and Monolock, but offers prices up to 15% lower than comparable GIVI-branded items. “I began working for the company in the mideighties when I finished my studies,”says Vincenzo.“At the time we were competing against brands such as Nonfango and Krauser. In the following years, we enlarged the range with other cases and, in the nineties, we began steady investment in machinery, starting a strong vertical integration process. We carried on consolidating the sales network and then, at the beginning of the 21st century,we introduced helmets.”

THE COMPANY NOW he company has grown particularly rapidly in the last 15 years, and at the end of 2010 GIVI had 416 employees and group turnover of E59 million, with more than 10 fully-owned companies and 130 staff in Italy alone. “All the family is involved in the company,” says Vincenzo.“My father is still President, my mother Willy still spends most mornings in the finance department, and Hendrika and I are Vice Presidents: her on the marketing side and me mainly involved with production.”

INDUSTRY EXTRA Trekker hard luggage, seen here on a Triumph Tiger XC, is one of GIVI’s best-selling luggage ranges

GIVI’s main areas of activity are in descending order of importance: hard luggage; soft luggage; helmets; windscreens and accessories

The total floorspace of GIVI production plants, warehousing and offices around the world totals around 50,000 sq.m., with 4,000 sq.m. of warehousing and 2,000 sq.m. of offices at the HQ in Flero, separate plastic and metal-working production facilities nearby with around 2,000 sq.m. each, and a 10,000 sq.m. logistics and warehousing centre at Barbariga 15km away,as well as smaller local facilities, including a paint shop. utside Italy, the company has full subsidiaries with warehouses in France, the U.K., Germany and Spain, each with around 2,000 sq.m. of floorspace. There is also a U.S. subsidiary in Charlotte, North Carolina, and three years ago another unit was set up in Reno, Nevada, to service the west coast of the U.S.

O

GIVI’s Technolab R&D facility at the Flero HQ has 10 research engineers and production designers

In terms of products, hard luggage remains the core business, followed by carriers and racks, soft luggage, helmets, windscreens and engine guards. Most of these are manufactured by GIVI in Italy, except soft luggage and some helmet components, which are made in South East Asia. “’Made in Italy’ is an important selling point,” says Vincenzo, but ‘Made in Givi’ is even more fundamental. “From concept to production are dozens of separate stages, including design, engineering, mould production, prototyping, part manufacturing, subassembly and many, many more. We are completely vertically integrated and do all of these stages in-house, and that is very rare nowadays, even in Italy. There are exceptions, such as soft luggage, which is very labour intensive, and if there is a run on a particular item we may use an external supplier, but for the most part we will try to do everything internally. “In terms of quality this gives us a completely different view, and enables us to give every separate element within a product purity of vision and fitness for purpose. That is one of our strongest USPs.” And the other USPs? “The GIVI brand has become much more popular around the world over the last ten years,” says Vincenzo.“This is for a number of reasons. Our quality standards are amongst the highest in the business, we have a particularly wide product range showing the best design, our customer care is secondto-none, our distribution network has become much stronger and we are paying increasing attention to advertising, marketing and building brand value.”

INNOVATION AND QUALITY IVI has filed many more than 100 patents over the last 25 years, on Monokey and Monolock systems, Tanklock bags, windscreens and many other products and devices, and an increasingly important activity is to protect the company’s intellectual property. >>>

The company’s beating heart is to be found at the R&D Technolab in the Flero HQ. Here 10 of the company’s 13 design staff work closely together, and when IDN visited some were poring over their screens, others measuring features of prototype 3D parts and a third group studying the properties of new materials. “We have always recognised that research and innovation are the best foundations for the company’s development,” says Vincenzo, “and in the Technolab, every new idea is balanced against real world functionality, safety and performance.” he company also has collaborative projects with the European Institute of Design,Milan Polytechnic and the engineering faculty of Brescia University, amongst others, and seeks to take the best ideas while encouraging new talent. Internal human resources are also carefully nurtured, with extensive training and support for staff. Decades of production experience have given R&D staff deep understanding of the performance of different materials, be they metal, composite or plastic, as well as crucial elements such as mould-making, the latest CAD-CAM systems, and manufacturing processes and equipment. “The trend is towards sharper design and improved quality of products. This is our major issue. We are used to companies that surface with cheap products and disappear after a few years, and differentiate ourselves by offering something the customer knows will look good, function well and last for a long time,” says Vincenzo. “We are ISO 9001 and TÜV-certified and have six full-time quality control staff, one for each major area of activity, as well as separate QC labs in every facility. Year on year we are trying to reduce returns and defective items, which currently average 0.2% across all our products. This is especially impressive given that we are shipping windscreens, for example, which can easily get damaged in transit.” mongst the test equipment in the company’s plants, IDN was shown a new vibration test machine to be used mainly for hard luggage.“We have recorded vibration data on poorly-surfaced roads and tracks in the Milan area and elsewhere, and with this machine we can replicate those bumpy rides over hours, days and even weeks to ensure our products can withstand the most punishing surfaces,” he adds. A major part in the manufacturing process is making the moulds for new hard luggage products.“We make each prototype out of wood or resin, and when we decide we like the finished design, we scan it into the computer to build up a true 3D representation,” says Vincenzo. “The mould will then be precision-milled from billet steel or aluminium, using the latest CNC machines, several of which are only used for mouldmaking. There are separate moulds for every model of

For example the new OEM luggage set for the Multistrada 1200, made by GIVI for Ducati, includes several different-sized top and side cases and took a year from concept to production – an impressive achievement given the complexity of the brief, according to Vincenzo.

VERTICAL INTEGRATION etalteck, GIVI’s metal products manufacturing plant, is within a kilometre of company headquarters, and has a full panoply of laser cutters, CNC milling, stamping, bending and welding machines, as well as stations for the craftsmen who bend and hand-weld smaller production runs. Much of the unit’s activity involves processing steel tubing for carriers and engine guards, and sheet metal for base plates. There is also a store for the thousands of jigs and tools the company has used in the past, and which it can use again to make limited runs of items

that are out of production for customers needing replacement parts for older products. The plastics plant, Technopolymer, is also fully owned by GIVI.A major feature are the vats containing the different plastic feedstock types linked by snaking coils of tubing to lines of injection moulding machines, both small and large capacity. The automated systems controlling the supply process also ensure that levels of humidity and other variables are correct for every different product. All the company’s plastic products are produced here, as well as rubber products. Amongst the ultra-modern equipment in the facility are advanced anthropomorphic robots capable of thousands of separate movements. Like every other GIVI production facility it has a separate QC section, lab and test area, with checks on samples every two hours. “We know when every individual part came out of which machine and who was in charge at that time,so there is a trail back to who was responsible if there is a problem,” says Vincenzo. he 10,000 sq.m. logistics and warehousing centre at Barbariga has three separate buildings. One is the logistics centre where finished products are stored, and from where deliveries are organised every day,and the two others store parts from the manufacturing facilities needing assembly and/or packaging. Built recently to a high specification, the warehouses have plenty of room for future sales expansion. The logistics centre has 13 metre high stacks serviced by automatic picking machines, with separate

A GLOBAL BRAND incenzo’s sister Hendrika, Sales and Marketing Vice President, confirms that the relationship with dealer and customer is key to the company’s overall success. “We are in constant communication with dealers and sales staff – that is one of the most important aspects of my job. I closely follow what is going on in Italy, France, Spain and other countries, and, on top of everything else, ensure any feedback is incorporated into our product development. “One of the motives behind the creation of subsidiaries in our major overseas markets is to provide the same levels of service we give in our home market. Because they have warehouses and manage their stocks autonomously, they provide a 24 hour delivery schedule for all but their most distant dealers. This kind of attention to detail in customer care has reaped big rewards for us.” Outside these major markets, GIVI has built up an extensive and efficient distribution network “We have 70 distributors around the world and are a truly global brand. We are the largest quality motorcycle hard luggage suppler worldwide, and our soft luggage presence is catching up fast,” she says. rand building is never far from her concerns. “In Italy we are amongst the top five motorcycle sector brands. GIVI is respected for its design flair, but also transmits a sense of safety and solidity to those who are not fanatical about motorcycles.” Hendrika also watches the way different markets are changing. “Among the latest trends we are seeing is a fall in scooter sales in Italy and a number of other markets worldwide, which we are watching closely. GIVI has done well in recent years as the scooter sector has developed, so we will follow that trend and see where it takes us.” The company has a history of introducing truly innovative products, such as the X.01 helmet, which is

V

B

genuinely modular with its removable chinbar, rather than the traditional flip-up, which is modular in name only.“It is important we proactively inform and educate the market about these new company products and developments,” says Hendrika. GIVI’s helmet business is expanding steadily in Europe, with the market reacting well to new products. The Head Protection System (HPS), which focuses on technical safety and innovation, underpins all helmet design within the company. When the foundations of the helmet business are stronger in European markets, the company will consider expanding into North America and other markets worldwide, according to Vincenzo. A third of overall turnover is made in Italy, and the remaining two-thirds in export markets. The company has 20 sales agents on the domestic market and services around 1,800 dealers. “In Italy we are by far the largest supplier of motorcycle luggage,” he says. “We are holding on by adding new products. New registrations have fallen sharply, but the second-hand market has increased by a large margin, so accessories are still selling well.” he company’s largest European export markets are France, Spain, Germany and the U.K., where the company has wholly-owned subsidiaries. Elsewhere in Europe the company is represented by distributors. “The French market has been good for us,” says Vincenzo, “and in Germany we have just had a good year and gained market share. But we feel we can improve our distribution in Germany, and also in the U.K.. With more specialist sales staff the situation should be better there, and we will definitely achieve more in these markets.” GIVI currently has around 2,500 active dealers and outlets in Germany. In the U.S. the market has contracted significantly in the last three years and GIVI sales have fallen, but the company maintains a significant operation there and is waiting for the market to recover. Other than the five sales subsidiaries in Europe and the U.S., GIVI also has three production subsidiaries in Malaysia, Brazil and Vietnam, which also cover sales to regional markets. “We have a joint venture in Malaysia which supplies South East Asian countries, principally Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand, and this is doing very well indeed,” says Vincenzo.“It is early days for our venture in Vietnam.” GIVI has also benefited from excellent distribution

<<< in Japan, with sales increasing year on year. OEM luggage deliveries to Japanese manufacturers, such as Honda, Suzuki and Kawasaki, are also holding up well. he company has been increasing its presence significantly in Central and South America over the last few years. “We have a production and sales unit in Brazil which started out as a joint venture, but since the beginning of the year is now fully-owned,” says Vincenzo. “Brazil is a booming market and we are introducing new products and new sales strategies to increase market share. We are also selling well in Argentina, Colombia,Venezuela and Mexico.Year by year our sales in these markets are increasing fast.” The company is also scouting out new markets in India and the Middle East, which show great promise. An important part of the marketing mix worldwide is GIVI’s support for high profile motorsport. “Sponsorship for teams such as LCR Honda in MotoGP gives us a lot of visibility around the world. We also have a strong presence on the internet, via smartphones and on social media, which also builds our reputation globally,” says Vincenzo.

T

THE FUTURE IVI has come a long way since 1978 on the back of close family control, flair in designing stylish and reliable products, and focus on all aspects of manufacturing and selling accessories the motorcycle rider will want to use. This has meant that despite the economic difficulties of the last few years and a drop in sales in 2009, GIVI has been able to bounce back with increased turnover in 2010 and similarly positive forecasts for 2011. Vincenzo explains: “We were able to increase sales in a rapidly-declining market because unlike many others, we chose to invest heavily and became a lot more aggressive in the market. An example: we added new styles to the helmet range, which resulted in improved overseas sales. When you launch a new product like our new modular helmets in a sector which is already crowded you need maximum commitment

from everyone, and it is particularly important to inform the end-user of the features and advantages of using the product. There is always a period for an innovative product to gain market acceptance, but if you do it right, sales will take off, and that is what happened with us.” Another factor in the turnaround has been the relative health of the Asian and South American markets where GIVI sales have boomed, emphasising the importance of the widest possible global presence, with different markets compensating for each other as they go through the different stages of the economic cycle at different times. Vincenzo says there are many challenges ahead, and the company’s policy will be to improve its existing product ranges and continue to gain market share. “We have no plans to expand into other categories of product for the time being – that would reduce our focus at a crucial time.” o the outside observer, GIVI is doing a lot right. The way the company has expanded internally by setting up its own manufacturing operations, rather than acquiring companies already established in these fields, shows a single-minded determination by the Visenzis to do things their own way rather than take the easy route. And there is a quiet and confident efficiency at the company that gives the visitor an insight into how obstacles have been surmounted over the years, underpinning its growth from modest roots into one of the largest motorcycle accessories companies in Europe. This is perhaps best expressed by the company’s founder himself. In an interview with Italian magazine Euromoto earlier this year, Giuseppe Visenzi went back to his racing roots to describe the company’s future. “Difficult periods sort out the winners from the losers, and those wanting to stay in the riding seat must provide continuous innovation. The race continues, and we are still in the running!”

Two-Wheel Tourism is a showcase for tour operators and regional authorities to demonstrate their appeal to the increasing number of motorcycle tourists. Travelling by bike has a special appeal and many tourist boards and travel agencies have created ad hoc programmes and routes. The Custom Area will exhibit that most creative facet of motorcycling, the custom build. The Custom sector is evolving fast and growing steadily, and now accounts for a hefty 10.7% share of the Italian market alone, according to the organisers. There will also be a custom bike show and a number of customspecific events. The Safety Area is a space dedicated to those who work to make riding safer, especially in terms of infrastructure, tools, accessories and protective clothing. MotoLive is one of the favourite elements of the Milan Show amongst

the public, with a dedicated outdoor area of 85,000 sq.m. set up with tracks for races, displays and test rides. ANCMA says 4,500 cu.m. of earth has been moved, 8 bleachers seating 4,500 installed, and 100 arena floodlights positioned, alongside 5,500 m of barriers, 2,800 straw bales, 15,000 sq.m. of paddock space, and 320 staff.
