EU ‘tampering’ with your freedoms CONTENTS URTHER to my Comment of last November, the European Commission is continuing the process of formalising its position on the introduction of measures to prevent modifications of the powertrain. This could have a seriously negative effect on the aftermarket sector, as well as the wider motorcycle industry. The European Parliament is still revising the proposed text on the type approval of motorcycles and the final vote should have taken place by September. In the meantime the TRL research institute in the UK has been tasked with a socalled ‘anti-tampering’ study on behalf of the Commission. As the terminology suggests, the study is designed to investigate existing forms of ‘harmful powertrain tampering', as well as measures to prevent them. European riders’ rights lobbying group FEMA is concerned about the scope of action that might be delegated to the Commission. The definition of ‘powertrain' is important, as is the extent of the‘tampering’ to be prevented. And even though the intention is to prevent ‘harmful' tampering only, the definition of what is to be considered ‘harmful' might be left entirely to the Commission. Ian Mutch, president of FEMA member MAG (the UK’s Motorcycle Action Group), and a prominent opponent of these proposals, has contacted us in a bid to publicise the extent of the threat. “The EU agenda is to dictate increasingly rigorous environmental standards for new motorcycles and then prohibit any modification of those machines post point of sale, “ he says. “Historically MAG and FEMA with the assurance of the industry, have claimed that we are right on the cusp of what is technically achievable with conventional engines in terms of emissions or noise. Then the engineers have moved on, learned a bit from the car world maybe, and hey presto, we can meet the new regs after all. “The difference with the tampering emissions is that it isn’t aimed at the manufacturers, it’s aimed at the end users and the aftermarket industry that feeds off its customers’ unending (some might say obsessive) appetite for a little bit more than the standard bike offers. “Who is to say what is ‘harmful’? That is fairly specific or

F

definable. Harmful in this context means increasing fuel consumption or noxious emissions. “I am pretty certain, for example, that each of the three stages of tuning offered by Harley-Davidson dealers gives enhanced performance at the expense of mpg, and probably also with an increase in emissions. “The language from Brussels suggests no flexibility, so if a modification makes things 1% more harmful then it will be outlawed. “OEMs may see stricter regulation as a means of keeping more of the market to themselves. What’s harder to understand is why there seems to be so little concern among the manufacturers and dealers in aftermarket performance parts. “And the implementation and policing of the EU proposals is an issue in itself and the fact that the Commission has launched a competition to see who can come up with ways to ensure that owners do nothing ‘harmful’ speaks volumes about how tricky they see the problem of enforcement being. “That is in itself not cause for complacency, however, as there are other moves afoot. Right now only some EU countries have regular technical testing for motorcycles, but a standardised EU-wide test is being worked on. The need for this is partly being sold as a safety measure despite the fact that vehicle defects are implicated in very few accidents, maybe 1%. But the other driver of this issue is the objective of ensuring that emissions standards are maintained throughout a vehicle’s life.” Mutch insists that MAG perfectly understands the need for improved environmental standards, but thinks these proposals are a step too far, threatening the culture of owner modification that is such a fundamental part of the British and European motorcycle scene. It is therefore vital that everyone who wants to see this culture maintained contact their MEP and make clear Framework Regulation (2010) 542 must retain sufficient flexibility to allow continued owner modification, and that any future EU-wide testing regime recognises this.

these proposals are a step too far

Polaris VP Motorcycles Mark Blackwell has joined the board of directors of US electric bike maker Zero Motorcycles. Two helmet companies, Arai and Icon, have tied for the top spot in the J.D. Power 2011 US Motorcycle Helmet Satisfaction Study. Arai has topped the list since the study’s inception in 1999, but this is Icon’s first time at the top. Both earned a score of 852 out of 1000. The industry average was 788, the highest since the study began. Harley-Davidson Motor Co. has recently opened its new Asia Pacific headquarters in Singapore. Sales in the Asia Pacific region accounted for 9.4 percent of Harley’s total retail volume in 2010, and this is expected to increase in future. Harley began selling bikes in Japan as early as 1912, according to company archives. The Robb Report 2011 “Best of the Best” list includes Kawasaki’s Ninja ZX-10R as best sportsbike, BMW K160 as best touring bike, Ducati Diavel as best cruiser and NCR Millona 16 as best custom bike.

THIS Spanish-built machine is powered by the 125cc six-speed four-valve water-cooled Yamaha YFZR-125 engine, but uses a carburetor instead of electronic fuel injection, allowing for easier performance tuning. The lightweight, learner-friendly

bike weighs in at 128kg (dry), 15bhp, uses an all new dual perimeter steel chassis, Ø40mm upside-down forks, a braced aluminium swing-arm, 17in alloy rims shod with Michelin Pilot sport tyres, twin-piston radial disc brakes. Digital dash

with top-speed memory and daytime LED side lights plus dual fairing mounted projector headlamps. Developed from the RS2 racing range, aftermarket parts include a high compression piston, competition silencer and a big bore kit. Distributors are now being sought in specific countries.

Gulf Bike Week changes dates THE fourth annual Gulf Bike Week will take place from 18 to 20 October, 2012 at Dubai Festival City, “promising bike enthusiasts and families non-stop action and incredible performances, guaranteed to surpass

previous years,” according to a release. Previously the show was held in February. Organiser Christopher Hudson said: “Gulf Bike Week has been a consistent success since its initiation in 2009. In 2011, we had 80 exhibitors and over 30,000 visitors attend the show. After careful consideration, we have moved the event to the end of the calendar year in October, to coincide with the beginning of the riding season here in the Middle East.”

HOREX, the revived German motorcycle brand, is now building up its dealer network and Distribution Manager Fritz Rombach says that this should largely be in place by late summer, 2011. From the end of this year about 70 partners in Germany, Austria and Switzerland will sell the Horex VR6 Roadster. These partners, mainly experienced motorcycle dealers who want to carry another brand, have been vetted so they match the company profile and are fully motivated to look after Horex customers. The distribution model is based on an agency principle, and an important part of the concept is to have a close partnership with the dealers. "This will be very different from the relations between dealers and some other motorcycle manufacturers", Rombach says. The radical, narrow-angle, supercharged V6 engine for the VR6 will be provided by Weber Motor in Markdorf, not far from the Horex plant in Augsburg, Bavaria. The company has expressed an ambition to become the second most important allGerman motorcycle brand after BMW.

EICMA 2011 Custom Exhibition THE Italian and wider international custom scene is being recognised at the EICMA International Motorcycle Exhibition in Milan, Italy, between November 8 and 13, 2011. Given that custom bikes now account for 10 percent of the domestic Italian motorcycle market, the organisers of EICMA have taken the decision to create the EICMA Custom exhibition space in Pavilion 2, specially designed to meet the needs of the custom fraternity.

Attention has been devoted to exhibition costs, and promotional rates have been defined for small and medium-sized custom shops and part specialists that support the extensive Italian custom industry. In addition there will be a bike show covering three classes: Chopper; Modified H-D and Café Racer. The competitors will be ranked based on the votes of four different juries; the public, two technical panels

manned by customisers and trade press representatives, and a special jury of celebrities from the worlds of arts and entertainment. Registration is free and reserved for customisers exhibiting at the show. The promoter of the event, Italian motorcycle and bicycle industry association Confindustria ANCMA, says the last EICMA show attracted over half a million visitors, as well as two thousand accredited journalists.

Honda expands in India HONDA Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI), Honda’s wholly-owned motorcycle production and sales subsidiary in India, has announced plans to expand the production capacity of its second motorcycle plant, which is under construction, and to build a third motorcycle plant to meet increasing demand in the rapidly growing motorcycle market in India. This capacity expansion will increase HMSI’s total annual capacity by 2013 to 4 million units, including

1.6 million units at the first plant, 1.2 million at the second and 1.2 million at the third. India represents the world’s second largest motorcycle market behind only China, and industry-wide motorcycle sales in India for 2010 reached 11.3 million units – up 30% compared to 2009. HMSI was established as a

wholly-owned motorcycle production and sales subsidiary of Honda in 1999 and began production in 2001. The second plant is currently being built in the Tapukara Industrial Area of Rajasthan, some 85 km from Delhi. It is scheduled to become operational in July 2011 with an initial annual production capacity of 600,000 units

YAMAHA Motor sold 5% more motorcycles over the first quarter ended March 31 2011 than in the same quarter of 2010. The Japanese manufacturer sold 1.689 million motorcycles over the quarter, more than the 1.605 million units sold in the same quarter of 2010. Despite the increase in unit sales, revenues dipped slightly to 219.7 billion yen ( E 1.88 billion) from 220.1 billion yen, due mainly to exchange rates. Cost reductions helped increase operating income by 11.9% to 13.3 billion yen ( E 103.8 million) from 11.9

billion yen reported last year. Yamaha’s motorcycle sales were up in Japan (26,000 vs. 24,000), Asia (1.48 million vs. 1.41 million) and other regions (129,000 vs. 96,000) but fell in Europe (44,000 vs. 54,000) and in North America (16,000 vs. 17,000). Despite the uncertainty caused by the March 11 Japanese earthquake, Yamaha has not changed its year-end outlook of a predicted net income of 20 billion yen ( E 171 million). www.yamaha-motor.eu

Suzuki motorcycle sales revenue down in fiscal 2010 Suzuki Motor Corporation reported a 5.8% increase in motorcycle unit sales but a 2.0% decrease in motorcycle sales revenue for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2011. Overall, Suzuki reported a profit of 107.4 billion yen on the year (E918 million) , a 36.5% increase from the 78.7 billion yen profit reported in 2009-2010. Suzuki’s motorcycle and ATV segment however was the only one to report a loss while the company’s automobile, marine and power products as well as its financial services arm, all reported a profit. According to Suzuki’s 2010-2011 fiscal report, motorcycle and ATV

sales brought in 257.7 billion yen (E2.2 billion), a 2% drop from 262.9 billion yen in 2009-2010. Suzuki’s motorcycle segment operated at a loss of 10.8 billion yen (E92 million), an improvement on the 21.1 billion yen loss reported the previous year. Motorcycle unit sales were up 5.8% to 1.33 million units compared to 1.26 million units sold last year. The increase comes entirely from the Asian market where Suzuki sold 1.1 million

units compared to 919,000 units the previous year. Unit sales in other regions were down, including in Europe, North America and Japan. Chubu Electric Power’s decision to shut down reactors in Shizuoka because of potential earthquake risk will likely affect Suzuki, which has six separate factories located in the region with power supplied by Chubu Electric. www.globalsuzuki.com

New French road users rights organisation FRENCH riders’ rights group FFMC, the French Motorcyclists’ Federation FFM and a number of other PTW associations have linked up with e q u i va l e n t organisations representing car and truck drivers to set up a new super-lobbying group, the Union des Usagers de la Route (UUR), principally to fight what they see as ever more restrictive measures being introduced by the French government in the name of safety and the environment.

“Representatives of road users have decided to unite under one banner to denounce the inadequate and unfair road safety and law enforcement policies of the government,” the UUR said in a statement. “We are not all criminals,

and we refuse to be treated as such.” The new organisation claims to represent “nearly three-quarters of two, three and four wheel users.” www.uniondesusagers delaroute.com

FIM and TTXGP mend fences IN a landmark move, the FIM and TTXGP organisations have agreed to put aside their rivalry and combine their respective zero-emission racing series across three rounds of their respective championships; 2011 FIM e-Power International Championship and the TTXGP World Series 2011. The joint events will be: 23-24 July Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca (USA) - FIM MotoGP WC 20-21 August Donington Park (GBR) - Qtel FIM Endurance WC & FIM WC Sidecars 24-25 September Le Mans (FRA) 24 Hours of Le Mans - Qtel FIM Endurance WC

In a joint press release both organisations have said that holding a selection of joint rounds “will allow the teams the best possible stage to promote the sport, the technology and the future to the next generation of motorsport.” In addition, plans are in development to celebrate the conclusion of the 2011 season with a single, unifying final event in October. TTXGP was the front runner in electric motorcycle racing: organiser of the first eBike race on the Isle of Man in 2009 and inventor of the ground-breaking eGrand Prix. FIM (Fédération

Internationale de Motocyclisme) on the other side, is the organiser of all important motorcycle races worldwide, including MotoGP, and launched the FIM e-Power series in 2010.

ACEM registration figures show near universal decline across Europe in 2010 REGISTRATION figures provided by the European Motorcycle Manufacturers’ Association ACEM confirm that the powered twowheeler (PTW) market shrank in almost every European country over 2010. The only countries to buck the trend were Portugal, where there was a rise of almost a quarter, and the Czech Republic, which saw a small increase. The biggest contractions were recorded in Italy, Sweden and Slovenia, the first at least partially the result of the withdrawal of that country’s relatively generous PTW scrappage scheme, but countries such as Greece, which have yet to file 2010 figures with ACEM, are also likely to have experienced significant market declines given the economic difficulties they have been facing. Of the larger European markets, France and Spain saw the smallest contractions. The French market has been remarkably consistent in recent

years, not having experienced much of a boom in the years before 2008 but also having avoided a subsequent bust. Spain, on the other hand, saw a large increase in PTW sales in the years before 2008 and a shrinkage by almost half in 2009. The 2010 figure seems to show that the market in that country could finally be stabilising. The Netherlands is also showing some resilience, with a market decline of under 4% in 2010. Countries not on the table include Cyprus, where the market contracted by 26%, and Luxembourg, where there was a 3% decline. Results so far in 2011 show that there is a small and partial recovery across the continent, with Germany up by 3.5% in the first four months of the year, and France up an anaemic 1.3%. Italy, on the other hand, still has some way to fall: registrations in the first four months declined by 19%. www.acem.eu

Doing your homework (Part 2) Following on from the first installment of our interview with BMW Motorrad boss Hendrik von Kuenheim in last month’s IDN, here he unveils plans for international cooperation, brand expansion and racing... AC: LOOKING at completely the opposite end of the scale, your Austrian competitors have introduced an Indian-made 125cc motorcycle, developed in Austria. HvK: A good looking bike! AC: The KTM 125 Duke is targeted at perhaps the single biggest issue in motorcycling - where is the next generation of motorcyclists coming from? Is this something that you feel BMW needs to address, and if so would you do it through Husqvarna, or through BMW? HvK: First, every company needs to define its own strategy. KTM is a totally different business to ours, with Motocross and Enduro at its heart, and t ra d i t i o n a l l y younger customers - at 52

years, you're not jumping 10m jumps anymore, the bones don’t heal that fast! Their business model is fundamentally different than ours, but it’s a good company, and I have the highest respect for [KTM president] Stefan Pierer. He didn’t want to go to China like everybody else, so he went to India where the people speak his language, it’s closer to Europe, and you can have trust with the Indians. It has now resulted in his partner Bajaj acquiring more and more shares, so now they own 40% of KTM, and they're virtually increasing their share every week. I think his strategic approach to make a young people’s bike is good, and I wish him well on this one, because he has a very affordable production base - but for BMW it’s not the way to go. Whether the bikes are produced in India or in Germany, I don’t think that

the 125cc market is a market that BMW should be in. We’re not in the Fiat Panda business, you know! This doesn’t go with the brand - but it could very well be a subject for Husqvarna, where India is a good location, maybe even better than China, in which to build motorcycles. There is an excellent education system there, good engineers, they speak the English language, and they understand a technical drawing, etc. And so, from that standpoint, there are a lot of advantages to build a bike in India, and I do think this could - or even will! work very well in the future for Husqvarna. AC: India has a growing market for imported motorcycles, to the point where Harley-Davidson is building its own factory in India to assemble CKDs, and is reportedly developing its own sub-800cc model to build there. What

BMW Motorrad General Director Hendrik von Kuenheim

12

INTERNATIONAL DEALER NEWS - JULY 2011

are BMW’s plans there? HvK: I was frequently in India last year, to discuss potential partnerships, but one thing is for sure, the Indian motorcycle market is for base transportation. 125-150cc is the main volume, and between Hero Honda, Bajaj and TVS, there are over 10 million vehicles sold a year, and it’s fast climbing. We can basically say that there are a million small motorcycles sold a month, and they are mostly all 125s up to 150s. There is now a small premium market developing, and Bajaj has teamed up with Kawasaki and they're building the 175-225cc Ninja model, and we’re talking a few hundred units. One other point is that the Indian customer by stature is a small person and a light person, and to then jump onto a GS1200 Adventure is impossible for most of them, just because of their size. Consequently you would have to offer a different product. However, as I said, last year I was frequently in India, and I am going back there again in three or four months. I have visited all the factories - Bajaj which is partnering KTM, Hero Honda who by the way have separated, and I visited TVS in Bangalore who were by far the most professional, with the cleanest production line in India. You could’ve eaten off that floor! They're building a 125cc engine in a clean room like they have in Formula One, the room was pressurised so that no dust gets in, all for a 125cc engine that is built 3,000,000 times a year – they are very committed and very good! Some of them even speak German… AC: Sounds like a good candidate for building Husqvarnas! HvK: Maybe, so if the market gets there, we will be ready. We have discussed it – after all, we have a plant there building cars, so we could easily convert, say, the 650cc one-cylinder

CATHCART REPORT that we build in Brazil to be made there, with an ultra-low seat to overcome the seating position issue, but the market for this in India is at present about 500 units a year. And by the way, nothing has so far worked out for Harley-Davidson over there - we have visited some of the dealers, and already some of them have closed their business. This was the same for Ducati too. You can fill the initial demand for the 100-200 people that want something different, but after that, so far the market has not developed. Also bear in mind that the market for luxury cars, where 15 years ago Mercedes and the others were in there, is only now slowly developing. There are over one billion people in India, and this year BMW has sold maybe 8,000 BMWs, and we are already the volume leader in the luxury segment with that number. But this is what we sell in China maybe every four days…. AC: You already take certain BMW manufacturing processes offshore, because Kymco now makes the Husqvarna/BMW motocross engines, and now it seems you may produce Husqvarnas in India. Would you consider following Triumph, and now it seems Ducati also, in installing a plant in another continent in order to build inexpensive components, and ultimately complete BMW motorcycles? HvK: We are already building motorcycles in Brazil very successfully, and we have become a very large player there in the last 12 months. We sold over 3,000 bikes there already, so 3% of my total sales, and this year it will be over 5,000, maybe 6,000. It’s the fastest growing market for BMW. We have now developed a specific new model for the Brazilian market using our K73 engine from our 800cc motorcycle, and they actually built the first three off the line yesterday in Brazil. I’m very proud. We’re already selling the old one-cylinder 650 there, and now we’re starting with this 800 also, and we will add a third bike later on in the year. However, looking back towards Asia, we have a strategic partner in Kymco, which initially started its business with Honda, and to our knowledge is the only company to have successfully managed to separate from Honda, and to have built an even better business after that. They are a very good company, and we will work harder and longer with them in the future on other projects besides Motocross. But I also went to Thailand to have a look for myself at the situation there, because there is a large supplier base in Thailand which produces wheels and aluminium parts etc.Actually, we have sourced some components from there

Hendrik von Kuenheim with the Concept C maxiscooter, the concept vehicle on which the forthcoming BMW scooter range will be based

“Before I retire I want to introduce a cruiser. I don’t want to leave the business without having done that” in the last few years already. It’s good doing business there, however the approach that Triumph and Ducati have taken is very different. Ducati goes there to produce socalled CKD bikes for the local market, to overcome a tax issue with import duty tax in some Asian markets. Triumph has a different approach they want the low-cost sourcing base to export to the rest of the world. These are fundamentally two different business approaches. In principle, I could imagine either or both for BMW, however we have always done best when we have built BMW motorcycles in Berlin - and trust me, the actual production cost is not the key factor. We’re talking a few hundred Euros off the physical production cost - we checked to see about building the scooters in Italy, or with Kymco in Taiwan, and the bottom line is, why would I want to go through the headache of flying people to Taipei all the time for a E120 difference in production cost? I say no way - all that stays in Berlin, and I say, guys, please 2003 BMW R1200C cruiser

work 5 minutes longer! AC: Will you however build the engine for the scooters in Taiwan? HvK: Maybe not initially in Taiwan, but clearly at some stage there will be a good potential for that. AC: The most significant market segment that BMW is not involved in at the moment is the Cruiser sector. You’ve already been there once with the R1200C, which has now become a collectors’ item. HvK: I bought one myself last year! It cost me a ton of money, more than when it was new, but I got a beautiful yellow and black one, with very low mileage. It’s the hottest motorcycle in the used bike sector right now in Germany! This is the biggest segment of the world motorcycle market, and it has a very stable risk level. If you look ten years ago in 2000, Cruisers accounted for 37% of all motorcycles sold in the world over 500cc, then it went up to 40% in the year 2007, and then in 2010 it was again 37%. The peak was really when Harley sold motorcycles to everybody through

their extremely cheap financing, where they now have to swallow the bitter pill of residual values and leasing delinquencies. But, basically it is the single biggest segment in the world, and a very profitable segment because you just need one engine, and there are lots of accessories, so it’s good for the dealers. It is my obligation as an entrepreneur to give the board proposals and say, give me lots of money to make a Cruiser, and it’ll be a good investment for you, and give you a good return. But then, however, you have to decide, do you go with the conventional approach, the Harley approach and do a V-twin, or maybe go with a more BMW approach where you do a Boxer like the R1200C - or do you think about what other alternatives you have? Do you do what the people from England do with a parallel-twin, or maybe a huge inline multi-cylinder engine? I think we have shown with the K46 [S1000RR] that where we didn’t invent a particular segment, we’ve thought hard about how to make the best bike in it. To some extent we re-invented the fourcylinder Superbike segment, and if you really want to be successful, maybe we need to do this more. Now if you do some market research, you’ll find the Cruiser customer in France, which is actually the biggest Cruiser market in Europe, is much more open to innovation than the Cruiser customer in North America. But then, on top of that, he says that ideally it should be built in North America, which is a challenge. AC: Well, BMW builds Z4 sports cars in Spartanburg, South Carolina! HvK: Yes, that’s true! Look, I don’t have an answer to your question today - but before I retire, I would have to put that Cruiser in place. I don’t want to leave the motorcycle business without having done that. AC: Have you yet made that presentation to the board, asking for the money to do so? HvK: I’ve made a couple of presentations, but maybe it was bad timing, and we had other priorities. You have to understand that 18 months ago, companies like BMW or Mercedes were under severe stress, and were all in survival mode. However, I don’t think any of the other companies has managed it all as well as BMW, with record quarterly profits two months ago, the highest ever on record. We have seen it in the development of the share price – no shares have gone up as much in the German stock market as BMW did last year. I should have known, and bought more! AC: How about electric motorcycles? Do you see a future for >>>

these, and is this something that BMW would ever want to be involved in - or maybe hybrids? HvK: Within the next three years my company, BMW, as a group, will become the premier provider of electric vehicles. We will produce vehicles which will be, in our opinion, far superior to the products of our competitors. BMW just announced our new brand called the BMW i, which maybe stands for innovation. We have announced two cars, the i3 and the i8, due to arrive in 2013. One will be more like a bigger city vehicle, and the other one will be a real sports car. These cars will basically be electric, and they will not have a conventional metal body, they will use carbon fibre and aluminium and magnesium components, and they will be light and extremely innovative in where you build them, how you build them, how you paint them – they will probably be the most environmentally friendly cars, not only driving, but also in the way they manufacture them. The company is fully committed to this, which means there will also be spin-offs for the motorcycle division. But let’s get one thing clear - what is the number one enemy of the electric motorcycle as a vehicle? It’s weight. Lithium-ion batteries with today’s technology are heavy – they’re lighter than lead batteries, but they’re still heavy. The reality of what the customer wants, and what technology is able to offer today, is vastly different. The customer says, I want a minimum 100km range - despite the fact that the average BMW Motorrad customer only drives 30-37km a day, and the average BMW car customer actually drives 2km less per day! So, if somebody rides 37km a day, why do you need a 100km range? It’s just a mental thing – so maybe then you can give the customers a product which has a range of 60-70km? OK, the battery is the first thing. The second thing is that the customer wants to have, from market research, is at least the potential top speed of 120km/h, for when he goes on the urban freeway, just to pass the trucks etc, and for when maybe he can ride it pretty

BMW MINI E-scooter

“Within the next three years, BMW will become the premier provider of electric vehicles” fast when there’s no stop-and-go traffic. So for 100km range and a top speed of 120km/h, you need a fairly large battery, weighing about 80kg. But battery technology is developing rapidly, so the lithium-ion batteries in a Blackberry increase their capacity and performance by 6% a year, on average. The same space, the same weight, but every year you get approximately 6% more juice out of the battery. Now if you transpose this to the battery technology used for motorcycles or cars, with all the billions put behind it from companies like Siemens and Bosch, BMW and Mercedes, and the rest, you will see this improvement happening there, too. Assuming that this will continue, we could envisage that we will put a product into the market in about three years from now, which will have maybe an 80-90km range, will do 110km/h, and will be an excellent commuting product. AC: Presumably this will be part of BMW’s Urban Transportation sector you’re establishing with the scooters? HvK: Yes, but let me also be very clear. I don’t think that during my time in charge of BMW Motorrad, we will be able to produce an electricpowered bike that could take us on a ride like the one you and I took today, going up and down mountain passes, riding at speed on the flat - this will not

INTERNATIONAL DEALER NEWS - JULY 2011

happen with comparable weight. But then, never say never – there’s a battery technology that’ll be available in the year 2023-25, namely the so-called ion-air battery. The US Ministry of Defence is the key leader in this sector, and this battery has ten times the performance of the lithium-ion battery, ten times the juice, but also 25-30% less weight – now we’re talking! Right now those batteries exist only in theory, they don’t exist in reality, but they know how in theory it is supposed to work, and everyone is confident that in 202325 the world will not be run on lithium-ion batteries like now, but will be driven on ion-air batteries. So then with ten times the juice in a battery, now we’re starting to talk business. You have to see that the whole motor industry is investing billions right now into something that at present does not concern the consumer. Everybody is basically playing at a roulette table, and putting all their money on zero, because everybody thinks that zero is coming – not million, billions! Not only that, but while right now you have virtually no offering of electric cars, in 2014 every manufacturer in the world will have an electric vehicle. Some of them will be basically steel cars with their engine ripped out and replaced, and others will be like the BMW i, which is extreme in design, extreme in manufacturing process and extreme in lightweight technology. BMW will win this bet, though, because we have said that we will go the extra mile, and we now know that our competitors are scared because they think they have maybe missed the boat. We will surprise the world on this one, because we will get the spin-off from that technology into our motorcycle business. AC: Finally, let’s talk about racing. Are you satisfied with the first two years of the BMW factory team’s World Superbike programme?

HvK: I’m partially satisfied with it so far, but not so satisfied with the second part of last year. Let’s not kid ourselves, we are in racing to win, not to finish 8th or 9th, and maybe sometimes on a good day you come 2nd or 3rd. BMW deserves to be on the podium every time. BMW must be on the podium this is the obligation for a brand like BMW. With the K46 [S1000RR – AC], we are basically winning every race in the showroom, and every magazine comparison test, and we should also win on the racetrack. The fact we won every race except one in the FIM Superstock Championship last year shows you that the bike is fantastic, but maybe we didn’t fully understand the rules and regulations of World Superbike. But, that being said, we do need to make some massive adjustments to make sure that we are better this year. AC: Do you believe it’s necessary for BMW to go Superbike racing at World Championship level, and if you don’t win this year, will you continue? HvK: Yes, we are committed, if in eight years’ time we have this discussion again and we still haven’t won, then obviously we’ll have done something wrong, and maybe I lost my job! But, if we don’t win this year, for sure we will continue. The Moto GP bikes really don’t have that much more horsepower than World Superbikes, maybe 5-10bhp difference, but nevertheless Moto GP racing costs a minimum of double the Superbike cost, but if you really want to win, then it’s nearly triple. A clear indication is that Ducati has spent E40 million on this class – but I don’t have this money, and I have not found anyone who is willing to pay this to me to go MotoGP racing. AC: So essentially the bottom line is that BMW would go MotoGP racing itself as a full factory team, if you could find the money from a sponsor to back you? And until that happens, you’ll support a privateer team using a BMW Superbike engine? HvK: And if the board of BMW approves that, and if that new regulation comes into place, and if that regulation stays in place for many years and doesn’t change overnight, if, if, if then yes, we would. But I don’t want to discuss this with my people before they have done their homework, and that is to win the World Superbike Championship. They need to focus on this and nothing else, and I don’t want them to even have one single meeting with any sponsor about MotoGP, because then if they don’t focus and then if they don’t give 100%, and only 95%, then we might miss the chance of race victory or winning the Championship, because they haven't focused. •

Triumph - onwards and upwards TRIUMPH sales continue to buck the trend, with production in the British company’s 2011 fiscal year running from July 2010 to June 2011 now officially forecast to reach 53,000 motorcycles from its five factories, two in Britain and three in Thailand. This compares with 24,375 Triumphs sold in 2004, for a global market share of just 1.8%. In 2010, Triumph sales fell only very slightly in response to the downturn of the past couple of years to 45,501 motorcycles in total, down just 1.5% from its best-ever peak the year before of 46,225 units. That’s when Triumph finally eclipsed its previous all-time classic-era high reached in 1967, when it made 46,000 motorcycles, and sent 28,500 of them to America. Last year, in a global market which actually contracted overall by 18%, this allowed the company to raise its slice of worldwide sales of over-500cc motorcycles to 4.7% - up from 3.4% in 2009, with a 5.5% share targeted for 2011.

Triumph owner John Bloor

In cash terms, this meant that Triumph Motorcycles’ turnover increased by 3% from £303.8 million in 2009 to £312.4 million last year, and operating profit from £2.5 million to £15.1 million, a significant hike claimed to be due to better cost control, improved use of working capital, and favourable exchange rates. It looks like payoff time for John Bloor’s brave 28-year investment in what was just another British basket case back in 1983, when he bought the defunct Triumph company’s name and manufacturing rights, essentially as a spinoff from a land deal, on purchasing the site of Triumph’s historic Meriden factory to build

A drawing of the possible entry-level Triumph Street 300 model

houses on it - then, and now, Bloor Holdings’ core business. But by devoting better than 75% of his personal time and resources to grow a company representing less than 20% of his family company's net worth, Bloor has engineered one of the most remarkable corporate revivals in motorcycle history and his customers around the world are the beneficiaries. One of the men responsible for this significant growth, Triumph’s former CEO, Tue Mantoni, has now returned to his native Denmark for what he cites as personal reasons, declaring that he and his wife, also Danish, wished to bring up their young family in their home country. However, having done so, on March 1st Mantoni was appointed President and CEO of audio-visual giant Bang & Olufsen, perhaps Denmark’s most prestigious exporter. Mantoni was replaced as Triumph’s CEO as of January 1st by Nick Bloor, the younger of John’s two sons, but continues to serve on Triumph’s board as a non-executive director. Triumph’s booming growth is reflected in the extension of its model range, which in 2007 comprised 13 different models, rising to 16 for 2010, then to 20 distinct bikes in 2011, and further expansion into new model sectors not presently catered for by Triumph dealers is planned for 2012 and beyond. While it’s known that these new models definitely include a

competitor for BMW’s topselling R1200GS adventure tourer-cum-maxi enduro employing an all-new 1200cc three-cylinder engine, as well as a Trophy touring bike using the same motor, at the other end of the price and capacity scale rumours are emerging that Triumph is developing a singlecylinder Street 300/350 model to be wholly manufactured in its factories in Thailand, for sale worldwide as an affordable entry-level bike in developed markets such as the USA and Europe, and as a prestige model in growth markets in Asia, Africa and South America. News of the bike has emerged in the Brazilian magazine Motociclismo, which reports that it will be assembled in Brazil from CKD kits sent from Thailand to a new Triumph factory in Manaus, centre of the country’s motorcycle industry – and it is indeed true that Triumph is preparing to shortly enter both the fast-growing Brazilian and Indian markets, to which such a model would be ideally suited. According to the editor of Motociclismo Brasil, Raul Fernandes Jr., the Street 300/350 will be presented in 2012 as a 2013 model year product, and will be powered by a liquid-cooled four-valve single-cylinder engine measuring anywhere between 267cc and 350cc, depending on the country in which it’s sold. If so, this would position the

British company’s new single against the KTM 125 Duke being manufactured in India for the Austrian company by its partners (and 38.10% shareholders) Bajaj Auto, which will be sold in 200cc form in India, Brazil and other developing markets at the end of this year. Moreover, it’s emerged that initial plans to launch an Indian-built KTM 250 Duke at the end of this year as a step up from the entry-level 125/200, have now been scrapped. Instead, KTM will launch a 350 Duke at the EICMA Milan Show in November which, although styled in Austria by Kiska Design, and promoted on the back of Tony Cairoli’s achievement in defeating KTM’s 450cc rivals with a 350cc bike to win the 2010 MX1 world title, will have been entirely developed in India by Bajaj Auto for manufacture there. Triumph’s new Street 350 project, if indeed it exists, will be a potent rival for the Indo-Austrian bike in developing markets, while in theory at least providing a worldwide stepping stone further up the capacity scale to

Former CEO Tue Mantoni, now head of Bang & Olufsen in Denmark, but still on the Triumph board as a nonexecutive director

other models in its portfolio, like Honda’s acclaimed new CBR250R single – by no coincidence, also made in Thailand! “We cannot comment on any speculation regarding the development of new models,” said a Triumph spokesperson when asked if the rumours surrounding the Street 300/350 were true. But, are they? Is the first single-cylinder motorcycle to carry the Triumph name since the demise in 1958 of the muchloved Tiger Cub, really going to happen? This isn’t an April Fool story – news of the bike was published in the March issue of Motociclismo Brasil! - so, watch this space! •

INDUSTRY EXTRA

: supporting the industry TecMate has been developing and manu-facturing unique electronic products for the motorcycle, powersports and niche vehicle sectors for more than 20 years, and in this time has gained extensive experience in the field of battery maintenance and related equipment

Interview and words by Al Franck - al@dealer-world.com HE first ‘Mate’ products were designed by Martin Human, currently the CEO and CTO of TecMate and were distributed by the Belgium-based garden equipment distribution company Eurogarden from 1989. TecMate itself was founded in Belgium by Human and partner Tim Wisdom with Eurogarden as the third partner in September 1994. An early product was BatteryMate, a professional dealer load tester, charger and power desulphater, which was created in collaboration with Honda Motor Europe to combat the high failure rate of newly-introduced sealed AGM motorcycle batteries. The main reason for failure was neglect that caused sulphation: prior to BatteryMate, few dealers were equipped to recover the batteries. Other products in the early days were IgnitionMate (an ignition troubleshooter) and VacuumMate (a carburetor/throttle body synchroniser and troubleshooter). Although TecMate’s roots remained firmly in professional tools for powersports and marine dealers, in 1995 the OptiMate desulphating battery charger and tester was introduced, offering a charger for the motorcyclist and powersports vehicle owner that could save and prolong the life of batteries. The OptiMate design took basic elements from the BatteryMate and its many versions are still bestsellers across the international motorcycle industry. Products are divided into three categories:Fuel and Ignition, Home and Dealer Battery Care. Under the first category come products such as CarbMate, IgnitionMate, SynchroMate and VacuumMate synchronising and trouble-shooting tools. Home Battery Care products include six OptiMate batterycare and two AccuMate charger variants, as well as the TestMate Mini easy-to-use tester.

T

Dealer Battery Care products include some of the most sophisticated products on the market, including the BatteryMate load tester and automatic desulphating diagnostic chargers, OptiMate PRO series of diagnostic maintenance chargers, TestMate Sport digital testers and AccuMate PRO for deep cycle batteries. ecMate also offers a full range of dealer support material, including displays and stands. “Our products are in service in nearly 50 countries worldwide, and we have active distributors in 36 of these,” says Human. “We also manufacture private label or custom products for a number of outstanding companies. Our products have been ordered by, and are being recommended or directly distributed by, more of the established global powersports OE networks in more countries than any of our competitors.”

INTERNATIONAL DEALER NEWS - JULY 2011

Relationships with Japanese and European motorcycle OEMs remain strong. Apart from Honda, these include Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Triumph, Bombadier, Derbi, Mercury, Gas Gas and Peugeot Motocycles. “Our philosophy places strong emphasis on service, whether in response to technical enquiries or in providing after-sales back-up, and equally important, on maintaining a continuously high level of product quality. These principles underscore the close relationships we have been able to develop with a number of OE manufacturers,” says Human. urope remains the key home market, representing 80% of sales, with the UK the most important single country. Key export markets include Japan, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa for consumer level chargers.

E

THE TECMATE GROUP comprises three companies: TecMate International in Belgium, which employs 10 and is the head office and holding company, TecMate North America in Ontario, Canada, which employs 10, including five engineers, and is responsible for product design and the distribution of products in the Americas,Oceania and S.E.Asia, and TecMate Manufacturing South Africa, which employs 15 and makes all the group’s professional workshop and dealer tools, as well as distributing TecMate products in Africa. The current shareholders are Martin Human (CEO and CTO TecMate Group), Phillipe Nagelmackers (Chairman TecMate Group and owner of Eurogarden), Michael Cooper (VP Sales & Marketing, TecMate North America), and Kevin Lewis (General Manager – TecMate Manufacturing South Africa). Co-founder Tim Wisdom retired at the end of 2009. Emmanuel Donati is the General Manager of TecMate International, which also controls distribution of products across Europe, the Middle East and Japan.

ccording to Human, TecMate saw significant growth in North America until 2008, after which sales fell back, but 2011 has seen a return of sales in powersports exceeding the growth that occurred prior to the financial meltdown. ”We are also seeing encouraging growth in the highly competitive automotive sector. Sales in South America, specifically Colombia, Honduras, Chile and Argentina, of our professional level OptiMate PRO range are increasing, indicating a trend away from standard chargers towards more intelligent products that can save batteries.” TecMate’s business model is distributor and OEM only, which has been an important part of the company’s success. “We strongly support our distributors as they have the necessary programmes in place to support dealers, including financial incentives on volume purchasing. Our pricing structure allows generous profit for distributors and dealers alike. Also, our model is consistent with a quality product that does not need to be discounted to be sold so our dealers makes money, allowing them to provide the support that is essential with powersport products and vehicles. And the consumer is happy to pay for a reliable and quality product that continues to have strong aftersales support, either direct through us or via our importers and distributors.” Unlike its main competitors, TecMate does not directly offer or sell products on the internet. “We do however recognise the trend towards online sales,” says Human, “so we do our research and then encourage our distributors to make contact with relevant internet-based companies in their regions.” And the link with original equipment manufacturers is an important part of the mix. “Traditionally we have always supported OEMs directly with our professional tools, so that they can make them available to their dealers according to their own programmes, which typically include education and problem solving,” says Human. “Companies such as Honda and Triumph have their

own branded OptiMate battery-saving chargers which they offer to their dealer network. “ ll professional tools are made by affiliate TecMate Manufacturing South Africa, while consumer-level chargers are supplied from China. “We work with two different partners in southern China,”says the TecMate CEO. ”One factory has been manufacturing TecMate products since 2001, the other is a high-tech partner manufacturing our latest OptiMate products. We frequently travel to China to coordinate manufacturing and QA procedures to ensure our products remain of the highest quality.” New product development is often spurred by the company’s close relationships with manufacturers. “Through our long term relationships with powersports OEMs we are made aware of trends and needs. As motorcycle enthusiasts ourselves, we continue to listen and learn of needs in this industry. Depending on the complexity of the product, time to market can range from 6 months to 2 years,” says Human. “We continuously monitor technical improvements in battery technology and respond with improved micro-processor-based charging methods. Our most recent response is OptiMate 4 Dual Program, which solves battery maintenance problems that BMW owners have been experiencing since the introduction of CAN-bus on their motorcycles, and that thus far has not been successfully solved by competitors or even BMWbranded chargers themselves.” >>>

<<< In terms of market positioning, Human says TecMate will always focus on providing a complete solution to a problem. “An example is our OptiMate battery-saving charger range. Where others simply provide smart maintenance chargers that work and can prolong the life of good batteries, we provide a CarbMate solution to save a battery that is ‘bad’ simply due to carburetor neglect that has caused a condition that prevents it tester from accepting charge. OptiMate ‘convinces’ the battery to once again accept charge and then it prolongs the battery’s life. This saves the powersports vehicle owner money and the hassle of having to replace the battery. And it is certainly a more ecofriendly option than dumping millions of batteries that could have been saved if the right charger was at hand.” or the future, the company plans to consolidate its position in the motorcycle and powersorts sectors, while also entering specialised sectors such as performance and classic vehicles. Human says TecMate is also developing charging algorithms for new power storage technologies such as lithium batteries, specifically LiFePO4. “The financial downturn has given us the opportunity to recognise other possibilities,” he says, “such as mass monitoring of batteries in storage, so as to proactively prevent new batteries from suffering an early death.” The TecMate CEO concludes by insisting on the importance of cultivating a strong dealer network, which has helped the company ride out the financial downturn: sales in the key European market grew by more than 10% annually in 2008 and 2009, and by 15% in 2010. “TecMate remains strongly committed to the powersports industry, both in our product and sellthrough strategy,”he says.“Even though web- based sales are increasingly important, we know that without dealers the industry we know and love will eventually disappear. So our core strategy involves total support for dealers: let them do the selling to the consumer, either direct or via the internet.” •

BATTERY charging is assumed by many to be a simple and uncomplicated process, but, according to TecMate, this is far from the truth. Not only have batteries evolved over the last 20 years into many separate technologies, the requirements put on them have increased massively. On top of the differing types of battery construction and size of battery, each one has had a different history and is therefore unique. The range of battery types and conditions that chargers have to deal with is therefore vast. OptiMate chargers are designed to cope with a myriad of different possible battery conditions and assess, recover, charge, maintain and monitor the battery perfectly, over many months if necessary, and to do this entirely automatically with no user input required. With more than 20 years experience, TecMate’s highly skilled staff are called in to advise world-leading OEM companies about battery-related issues. The company claims over 1,500,000 satisfied OptiMate customers worldwide, with 350,000 sold in the UK alone. Total sales of retail chargers to date are 2,300,000, including AccuMate, AccuGard and private branded products. The first OptiMate was introduced to the retail market in 1995, and evolved through OptiMate II, then III and IIIsp into the latest version, OptiMate 4, with every new version incorporating significant improvements in technology. In parallel, OptiMate PRO professional chargers were aimed at battery resellers and dealer workshops, while the AccuMate range was developed for higher current applications such as automotive and commercial vehicles. In 2009, the decision was taken to expand the OptiMate range to cover an even wider range of applications and battery sizes, resulting in the new OptiMate 6, the first retail OptiMate to incorporate TecMate’s Ampmatic microprocessor-controlled charge system. Every seasonally used classic car, boat or motorhome with batteries up to 240 Ah can now benefit from OptiMate technology. The most recent versions include: • OptiMate 4 Dual Program introduced at Eicma 2010, with a program that works with BMW motorcycles fitted with the CANbus control system • OptiMate 5, a 2.8A charger that is the bigger motorcycle and automotive version of the successful OptiMate 3+ • OptiMate 6 Ampmatic, a 5A charger with a program that can regulate its charge rate according to the battery’s condition • OptiMate PRO-S with charge selections for batteries below and above 10Ah and an innovative one-hour charge mode for new batteries. The OptiMate PRO-S was introduced at a dealer price consistent with the current economic situation, causing it to be adopted by a number of motorcycle OEs as a recommended tool. • OptiMate PRO8 with 6 and 12V charging • The redesigned and improved OptiMate PRO4, which remains the staple multi-bank charger for North American dealers. Warranty on Tecmate products is typically 24-36 months. Products that will be introduced later in 2011 include: OptiMate Lithium, a 5A max. charger targeting the emergence of LiFePO4 starter batteries in powersports and automotive, with Lithiumspecific adaptive Ampmatic technology to recognise the size of the battery and adapt charging accordingly, and all the necessary safety features to correctly and safely charge such batteries. New developments for 2012 include market sector specific maintenance chargers, a 10A and 20A consumer-level charger as well as an OptiMate wireless battery charger. www.optimate1.com

INTRODUCED at last year’s EICMA show, the Airflow jet is a result of close design and technical cooperation between the prestigious Italian design house and NewMax,the luxury helmet company that celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. Extensive testing, including in wind tunnels, shows the designers have achieved the optimal form and location of the outer shell’s aerodynamic flow intakes, special cavities in the internal polystyrene layer to foster air circulation and heat dissipation, according to NewMax, as well as of the inner parts which are ultra breathable and promote air circulation and heat dissipation. The synergy between these elements produces a reduction of over one degree centigrade of the temperature inside the helmet, the company says, and claims that in comparison with other jet models Airflow’s internal ventilation system is the most effective in quickly reducing internal temperature. Airflow is available in two versions. The top level model will have the shell

NEWS ROOM

NEWS BMW Group DESK records positive first quarter

European riders’ rights group FEMA says the European Commission has dropped its proposal to limit the maximum power of motorcycles to 74kW after intense lobbying. The Commission acknowledged that "the anticipated correlation between safety and absolute power limitation could not be confirmed". The future in city centres belongs to small cars and electric vehicles,” Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet, the French minister for ecology and transport, told French newspaper Le Parisien last month. She has announced plans for eight of the largest French cities, including Paris, to restrict or bar access for cars made before 1997 and motorcycles made before 2004, potentially affecting 8 million of the former and 1.6 million of the latter, in a bid to reduce urban pollution. Spain is encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles, including motorcycles and scooters, by offering a subsidy of 25% of the purchase price, capped at a maximum of E6,000. VE(UK) is to distribute NZI helmets in the UK. The Spanish company makes its helmets at a modern facility near Alicante and recently announced a unique process where purchaser-specified images, logos and club badges can be printed directly onto the helmet shell.

BMW motorcycle sales, which include both Husqvarna and BMW for the first time, rose 11.4% on last year to reach 25,049 units in the first quarter of 2011. Revenue in the segment rose 13% to E397 million, while profit before tax came in relatively unchanged at E30 million. Automotive segment revenues rose 35% to E14 billion, while profit before tax reached E1.6 billion, compared to E220 million in the first

quarter of 2010. European motorcycle sales were up 6.5% from last year at 17,260 units, but that was mostly due to a 36.8% increase in sales in Germany (4,395 units). Unit sales were otherwise down in BMW’s main European markets including Spain (1,439; -8.3%), Great Britain (1,643; -34.3%), Italy (4,432; -4.9%) and France (1,913; -7.4%). US sales were also down 4.8% at 2,319 units from

2,436 units in the first quarter of 2010. For the remainder of 2011, BMW foresees increased motorcycle sales despite an overall worldwide market that is expected to remain steady at 2010 levels. www.bmw-motorrad.com

Triumph celebrates 500,000th production bike TRIUMPH’S 500,000th bike, a unique special edition Speed Triple, has rolled off the company’s Hinckley production line in central England. ºThe machine was ridden on a celebratory trip around Britain at the end of May by British comedian and Triumph enthusiast Ross Noble. Meanwhile, there is strong speculation that 2011 product launches for the brand will include 1200cc versions of the Tiger sport adventure model and Trophy tourer.
