Welcome to our world UCH has been made of the changes that the motorcycle industry has been grappling with in the past few years. These were already in-play before the credit crunch, but their profile, shape and texture are more apparent now as the industry eyes a new landscape. While “So-long Japan and thanks for all the horsepower” maybe an oversimplification, it is no exaggeration to see the present process of change as no less of a revolution than the one that the Japanese manufacturers themselves led in the 1970s. A new order has emerged through the downturn. A clutch of European and American manufacturers have seen their market shares respond well in the face of market decline, and some have actually seen sales and profit improvements. Leading the way are HarleyDavidson and BMW, followed by Triumph and Ducati. You could not bracket four more disparate manufacturers, but it is in the contrast between each other compared to the perceived sameness of the ‘Japanese Four’ that the fundamental nature of the changes now sweeping the motorcycle industry is to be found. Gone are the days when an extra 1.5 bhp downhill with a following wind at massively illegal speeds cuts it as a motivating factor for a new model introduction or update. Gone are the days when a race replica could challenge for a number one sales spot – the ‘win-on-Sunday, sell-on Monday’ adage no longer applies. Gone are the days when cookie-cutter performance engineering’s dumbing-down of real-world riding character in our traffic-plagued and mangled road surface urban and highway riding environments can deliver the all-important grin factor for modern consumers. Instead there are other characteristics of the riding and ownership experience that are now emerging as the new rider’s hot buttons. Individuality rather than identikit is emerging as the most important motivator when a motorcycle purchase decision is made, whether new or used. And the ‘New Four’ are openly referencing their range in premium-market terms. But what impact will this have on the wider accessories industry?

M

All bike manufacturers, particularly the ‘New Four’, are making their accessories programmes an increasingly important part of their overall offer , moving away from the new or updated model as the main driver for sales. Will the aftermarket therefore see its prospects improve? The obvious but superficial answer is ‘No’, because the conventional theory of OE-dealer dynamics would dictate that manufacturers will increasingly lock dealers and consumers into their programmes, to the exclusion of thirdparty sales opportunities. This will happen to an extent. However another dynamic at play is that many motorcycle buyers are likely to continue their search for customisation and choice after the initial purchase, embracing a retro-fit and personalisation culture that only the aftermarket is in any real position to satisfy. The same process that in Europe is seeing BMW take market share from Honda because of the originality and individuality of the former’s model range, will see the quest for individual expression apply to what the rider equips himself and his bike with subsequently. In this respect the energy and message that OEMs will be preaching will draw closer to the aftermarket’s, and the net overall effect will be to grow option, feature, parts, accessories, performance package and apparel sales, in a way that only major corporate budgets can achieve. The culture change that consumers are forcing on manufacturers is one that could be defined as full platform flexibility: individuality, personalisation, safety, environment-friendliness, comfort and convenience, all contributing to the overall quality of the ownership experience. In that regard an entire industry that has always been predicated on exactly these principles can only but benefit. That industry is generally known as “The Aftermarket”. The nature of the new consumer dynamic will mean that our message to the OEMs and their dealers will increasingly become: “Welcome to our world”!

Character will count in a premium market

NEWS ROOM GERM AN REPO RT Stephan Maderner, editor of German motorcycle trade magazine Bike & BUSINESS, takes a look at the main issues currently affecting the industry in his country

Live tiger or dead cat? AS the positive dynamic in the German motorcycle market returned at last? Or are the players in the market just witnessing a short-lived revival before a return to slump, with the same paralysing reluctance of consumers to spend we have seen recently. In the financial markets this is known as a dead cat bounce, a sharp and temporary rise following an extensive period of decline. The facts so far are that new registrations have risen solidly in Germany over the first two months of the year, up by almost 20% in January and 54% in February compared to the same months of last year. There has also been a significant improvement in the second-hand motorcycle market, with activity up 65% on 2010. What is happening in Germany? All types of motorcycles have seen two figure increases, except for light motorcycles. March is traditionally the strongest month for sales in the German market, and if figures show the increase has continued, hopes for a muchimproved year will definitely have been raised!

We didn’t focus on maximum horsepower; we focused on heightening the rider experience at all speeds. To us, that means a lot of torque over a wide rpm range, low vibes, high efficiency and bulletproof durability. Enter the KMV4, a liquid cooled, 1650cc V4 with gasoline direct injection,” said Brian Case.

ACEM calls for longer lead-times for new European regulations A PUBLIC hearing in Brussels at the European Parliament on 22 March saw wide discussion of the new type-approval regulation of L-category vehicles (motorcycles, scooters, tricycles, on-road quads and mini-cars). The members of ACEM, the European Motorcycle Manufacturers Association, laid out why the new regulations on type-approval for motorcycles (COM2010/542) needed to take into account manufacturing constraints.

Chairman Malcolm Harbour (left) and Rapporteur Wim van de Camp at the European Parliament hearing

ACEM representative Antonio Perlot, in his submission to the parliamentary hearing, emphasised that current proposals would be extremely difficult for the industry to manage in the current economic situation. According to ACEM research, the application of the new environmental, safety and administrative provisions would lead to a cost increase of between 5% and 10% for large motorcycles (above 750cc) and up to 30% for smaller motorcycles (under 300cc). This rise would severely affect sales at a time when the industry had already seen a contraction in its market of 25% over the previous two years with as yet no sign of recovery. The association insisted it was keen to see the planned safety and

environmental regulations introduced, but with more time for smaller and medium-sized members to adapt their design and production schedules to conform to the new Euro 4, 5 and 6 standards. In the European Parliament hearing, Committee Chair Malcolm Harbour (ECR, UK) noted that the Commission proposal to improve safety and environmental performance also raised a number of economic issues. Rapporteur Wim van de Camp (EPP, NL) commented that the exact scope for new rules and the timetable for introducing new measures would be major points in future discussions. In the context that L-type vehicles represent 2% of distance travelled in the EU, but 16% of road deaths, safety was described as a critical factor with both rider behaviour and technical measures important in ensuring improvements. Luca Pascotto, from the Federation International de l'Automobile (FIA), considered anti-lock braking systems (ABS) to be "a promising technology" that needed to be combined with updating riders’ skills. Patrice Assendelft, representing the Dutch Royal Motorbiker's Association (KNMV), stressed that the "human factor is the most important", adding that training can help riders develop a ‘sixth sense’ to avoid emergency situations. Bernd Lange (S&D, DE) and Heide Rühle (Greens/EFA, DE) were interested in available cost benefit analysis of equipping bikes with ABS. Toine Manders (ALDE, NL) suggested that car drivers should also be trained on specifics of driving in motorcycle

IDN spoke to ACEM Secretary General Jacques Compagne (right) in Brussels after the European Parliament hearing and asked how he thought negotiations on the COM2010/542 regulations were progressing. “On issues such as compulsory ABS, things are moving in a positive direction. The Commission has made some good proposals and everyone sees the need for flexibility, for example the possibility of introducing simpler CBS systems for light motorcycles, and also the logic of exempting off-road and dual-use motorcycles from one-size-fitsall compulsory ABS. “On RMI (repair and maintenance information), the Commission is waiting for proposals from stakeholders, and we will discuss these with FIGIEFA and other interested parties in the coming months,

traffic. Bertrand-Oliver Ducreux presented French environmental agency ADEME's analysis of fuel consumption efficiency and durability of different classifications of bikes. Some fuel injection models were found to exceed current carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide emission limits. Dirk Bosteels presented Association for Emissions Control by Catalyst (AECC) analysis, which also found vehicles to be exceeding emissions limits, especially as their mileage increased, due to the absence of lifetime performance requirements. Jean-Ludovic Basset, speaking on behalf of European aftermarket distributors association FIGIEFA, highlighted the importance of repairs, spare part sales and training. Over 100,000 are employed in this area in the EU, he said, and safety and environmental aspects need to be considered through the entire life cycle of vehicles, not only for manufacture. Jacques Compagne, ACEM Secretary General, said: “Motorcycles, scooters and other vehicles covered by these regulations represent a great opportunity for mobility, especially in

cities. They reduce congestion, pollution and travel times, they are easy to park and affordable. We are seriously concerned by the discussions to date which have failed to take into account current production and market realities. We urge policymakers to make further detailed reflections on the potential of these vehicles, to ensure continuing competitiveness and employment in the sector.” The topic will be further debated and voted at committee level before a plenary vote in the European Parliament, which is currently scheduled for September 2011.

in its work on these regulations while the Council is not, which could mean the final text is only agreed in the latter half of 2012. This means the industry will face the first batch of complex new construction, testing and administrative requirements (on antitampering provisions, vehicle masses and dimensions, shift to ECE regulations, exchange of repair and maintenance information, market surveillance obligations, type-approval process with new provisions for certificates of conformity, marking requirements, provisions for end of series and small series...) only a few months before the planned introduction date of 1/1/2013, which of course is Mission Impossible! “This is why we have asked for a one-year postponement to 1/1/2014. I hope the institutions will see sense and accept this.”

Triumph Daytona 675R test ride FTER building 23,023 of its three-cylinder Daytona 675 Supersport contender in the five years since production began in January 2006, Triumph has now produced a track-focused Evo version of the motorcycle which lays valid claim to be the best real world sportsbike of any capacity available in today’s marketplace for use on public roads. Now, with the arrival of the Daytona 675R for the 2011 model year, equipped with race-quality chassis hardware and set to be built in the minimum 2,000-unit quantity needed to homologate it for World Supersport racing, Triumph has produced a bike intended to be equally at home on track days or in Superstock/Supersport competition as it is on Sunday morning runs. In terms of spec, it’s the top Triumph ever made, thus adding an extra dimension to the bike that’s already been acclaimed the world over as the class act of the 600 Supersport category. For in delivering a unique blend of impressive but accessible horsepower numbers up high, allied with fine reserves of torque all through the revband from its dohc 12-valve motor, the British mid-sized triple has proved

A

literally incomparable, by no coincidence the very word chosen by Triumph to describe a motorcycle which is still unique in the marketplace - well, until MV Agusta produces its own upcoming three-cylinder F3 Supersport contender. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. lected winner of the 2006 International Bike of the Year award by magazines from 15 different countries around the world, with more than twice as many votes as the runnerup, the Daytona 675 has since won three successive Supertest sportsbike shoot-outs staged by a comparable array of print titles, and twice clinched the equivalent Masterbike crown, while on the racetrack it’s beaten the Japanese fours to win the French, British, German and Belgian nationallevel Supersport Championships. However, while at World Supersport level Triumph reached the podium several times in 2010 courtesy of Chaz Davies aboard the factory-backed Italian BE-1 ParkinGO team bike, en route to fourth place in the final points table without quite matching the titlewinning Hondas, the one time the Welsh rider was set to finally score Triumph’s first World Championship road racing victory of the modern era

INTERNATIONAL DEALER NEWS - MAY 2011

under John Bloor’s ownership at Imola, he ran out of petrol before reaching the finish line to take the chequered flag.....! Conspiracy theorists can relax, though - the reason the Italian race team switched from Triumph to Yamaha for 2011 at ultra-short notice, was more of a combination of a budgetary disagreement, and the fact that the 1100cc three-cylinder Superbike project that Triumph was indeed working on, has now apparently been cancelled. When Triumph’s factory engineers began work on the 675R in April 2009, its aim was to provide a platform to lift the Daytona into serious contention in both Supersport and Superstock competition, that’d give the factorysupported BE-1 squad what it was hoped would be a title-clinching edge. Instead, it’s Triumph’s paying customers who will now be the only beneficiaries, including those racing the bike in a streetbike-derived category where you aren’t allowed to change the front suspension externally, or the brake calipers, and indeed in Superstock can only use a wide-open powershifter if the stock streetbike already has one.As the new Triumph 675R indeed has.... o for an on-the-road price of £9,799 (E11,175) in the UK (compared to £8,250 (E9,410) for the stock Daytona 675), and available in just a single colour of metallic Crystal White with black fairing lowers and a sporty-looking red tubular steel subframe with red-lined graphitepainted stock lightweight cast aluminium wheels (forged/ magnesium wheels were considered, says Triumph’s chief concept engineer, Stuart Wood, but rejected because of cost - the bike still had to be affordable), the 675R is unchanged mechanically, with the exact same engine and basic chassis architecture as the standard bike, but instead comes replete with race-quality chassis hardware. This is headlined by a pair of Superbike-spec four-piston onepiece Brembo Monobloc radial brake

S

calipers gripping the same 308mm Sunstar floating discs as on the stock Daytona, but activated via braided metal brake lines by an 18mm Brembo radial master cylinder. The stocker’s minimalist rear brake package is unchanged, with a single-piston Nissin caliper working a 220mm fixed disc, but its Kayaba suspension has been junked in favour of fully adjustable race-quality Öhlins equipment front and rear, which on its own is responsible for a good part of the £1,549 price differential. he Swedish suspension sultans’ non-pressurised upside-down NIX30 forks are upsized 2mm to 43mm in diameter, delivering 110mm of more carefully controlled travel than the skinnier Kayabas, with 20-click high and low speed compression damping adjustment at the top of the left leg,and the same for rebound on the right. The 675R’s TTX36 twin-tube rear shock that’s become a practically universal fitment on World Supersport grids is a smaller, lighter unit than previous Öhlins products, offering reduced gas pressure for more precise adjustment over a wider range, a faster response to road irregularities, and reduced risk of cavitation thanks to the twin-tube technology. It comes with 130mm of wheel travel and easy-access 25-click rebound and compression adjustment. But for around another grand sterling the 675R suspension fitted as stock already has a much greater degree of sensitivity dialled in to it than the Kayabas - as I discovered for myself riding the bike for 25 laps of the demanding Portimao circuit in southern Portugal, replete with points calling for hard braking while plunging downhill at high speed or cresting a hill before a hairpin turn, that are a supreme test of any suspension package’s compliance. hose downhill stops provided a good illustration of how effective the Triumph’s new Brembo Monobloc brakes are, these less extreme two-pad versions of the four-pot one-piece Italian calipers providing recognizably more bite while retaining good modulation

CATHCART REPORT Warburton. “But while we plan to fit it to all Triumph models in the future, we can’t incorporate it in the 675cc engine, because there isn’t room in the crankcases. So we’ll have to wait for the next redesign of the Daytona motor to fit it in that and the Street Triple.” No, he wouldn’t be drawn as to when that will be...! he lack of a race gearbox was surely another factor in the divorce between Triumph and BE-1. I’m reliably informed that Triumph has indeed developed such a gearbox for the 675 motor, but for whatever reason it’s not been made available either to 675R customers or on the extensive list of factory racekit options for Superstock and Supersport racing. These include different camshafts and valves - still 30.5mm inlets/25.5mm exhausts, all nimonic - plus a programmable Keihin race ECU and related software including TRACS (Triumph RAce Calibration Software), a computer programme developed in-house which allows customers and race teams to fine-tune the ECU via a laptop. This features a selection of different engine maps and a pit lane speed limiter, all aimed at the needs of race circuit riding from occasional track days right up to World Supersport competition. Other optional race hardware includes an adjustable Öhlins steering damper, which I’d certainly have appreciated having at Portimao. There’s also a complete full-race Arrow titanium exhaust system, but a musthave for all 675R customers is the Italian exhaust company’s titanium slipon can fitted to the test bikes at Portimao. This freer-flowing silencer saves a useful 1.37kg in weight versus the OE equivalent, while offering a gain in performance with a sound to match, yet still remains Euro 3-legal when fitted with a dB-killer, since the catalyst remains in place. The only component that it’s a bit of a surprise Triumph doesn’t offer on the 675R, even as an option, is a slipper

T

and sensitivity. These brakes are stellar in performance, with superb feel and progressivity with just a single finger on the adjustable lever - yet squeeze harder, and they deliver outstanding stopping power very controllably from high speed. Track day riders will appreciate the ease and immediate feedback you get in adjusting the Öhlins forks and shock, quite apart from how effective they are. And the fact that the Triumph’s swingarm pivot can be raised or lowered gives the Daytona 675 an extra margin of adjustability in setup

Triumph chief concept engineer Stuart Wood

worthy of a Moto2 full-race chassis. Portimao’s demanding layout emphasised how well the Daytona steers, with pinpoint accuracy that allows you to hit the same small patch in the tarmac lap after lap.Yet as before, while it turns easily while still holding a tight line pretty well, it also stays glued to the tarmac in faster turns. This comes thanks not only to its 52/48% forward weight bias, and the excellent compliance of the Öhlins forks, which eat up surface imperfections at extreme angles of lean which might otherwise end in disaster, but also to the outstanding grip of the Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP tyres fitted as stock. These are directly derived from the control tyres used in World Supersport racing, and not only are they very light, so reduce unsprung weight and thus enhance suspension compliance, while also delivering outstanding grip, they’re

also a factor in the Triumph’s easy steering and adept changes of direction, because of their sharper, less flat profiles front and rear, which promote faster steering without impacting on stability, or delivering any trace of nervousness on turn-in. or 675R street customers the gold Öhlins suspension will have its own added bling factor, but there are now several carbon fibre parts fitted as stock to the bike, too, including the front mudguard, rear hugger, engine heat shield and cockpit infills - though rather surprisingly not the redesigned generator and clutch covers adorned with the traditional Triumph logo, which are still metal. The carbon parts help compensate for the heavier Öhlins front suspension, resulting in an unchanged 185kg/407lb fully-fuelled wet weight for the 675R - that equates to 162kg dry, same as for the stock Daytona 675. But as a mark of how svelte the British triple basically is, BE-1 had to add three kilos of lead ballast to get the Davies racer up to the 162kg three-cylinder minimum weight limit for the Supersport class last season. One other feature now included as standard on the 675R, which was previously a GBP 230 plug-and-play option on the Daytona, is the electronic quickshifter which sees the Keihin ECU monitor engine speed and the gear selected to cut the ignition and fuel supply for 50 microseconds per shift above 2,500 rpm, delivering seamless acceleration all through the gears. However, this seemingly comes at the expense of a sharper pickup from a closed throttle than on the stock system, and you especially note the harsh action of the bottom three shifts versus a comparable transmission Made in Japan - fourth to fifth, and fifth to sixth, are OK,though. The gearbox on Triumph’s 675 triple has always been noted for not having the smoothest of changes, but the company’s engineers have fixed that on the new Tiger 800 version of the motor, whose shift action is now as slick and precise as any J-bike’s. “It’s a revised detent system that’s responsible for this,” reveals Triumph’s product boss Simon

F

clutch - the BE-1 Davies bike had a proprietary STM ramp-type one fitted, which was adjustable for the degree of slip in each ratio. But in standard guise there’s still no sign of one (complete with 3-5kg weight penalty, depending on the design), since Triumph remains the master of forestalling any rear wheel chatter or instability on the overrun by means of clever engine mapping.Kudos,Triumph.Talking of the dash, the white-faced analogue tacho is very clear and legible, but the grey LED digital read-out to the left of it was quite indecipherable in bright Portuguese sunshine. I’ve no interest in clocking how close to the 257 kph/161 mph top speed Triumph says the bike is geared; for that I’m going down Portimao’s front straight, but since besides the speedo this also shows the gear selected, an important factor on a bike as torquey as the Triumph, that needs attending to. riumph’s Daytona 675 was already the bike that had just about everything - impressive but accessible horsepower numbers with fine reserves of torque, a capable chassis, precise steering, a wonderful exhaust note, and good comfort by the standards of its category. 96% of owners classed the bike as ‘very good’ to ‘outstanding’ in Triumph customer surveys, which with 74% of them new to the brand at the stage they bought their first Daytona 675 (and several have since traded it in for a new one), is a key factor in the British company growing its 2010 global market share to 4.8% of the total over-500cc segment. With the advent of the 675R, to this has now been added supercompliant suspension capable of fine adjustment, and benchmark brakes, plus added the added bling of carbon, and a powershifter for everyday use,. Triumph has made the best better still!

Marchesini M7RS aluminum wheel THE new M7RS Genesi aluminium wheel from Marchesini is the twin sister of the magnesium wheel used in the 2010 MotoGP, Moto2 and SBK world championships.

The company says it is the highest performance aluminium wheel available for sportsbikes, giving shorter stopping distances, sharper acceleration and faster, more precise cornering. Marchesini used an ultra-high-performance deformable aluminium alloy designed for aerospace applications to make the wheel via an advanced multi-directional closed-die forging process. Compared to standard wheels, the M7RS Genesi is 40% lighter and reduces rolling inertia by 35%. Amongst the many other innovative features are an anti-slip paint finish applied to the wheel rim that prevents relative movement of the tire and rim when accelerating and braking. It is available for all popular sportsbike models and packaged as a kit complete with all accessories required for assembly.

Hepco & Becker magnetic tank ring THE Lock It tank ring from German luggage and accessories specialist Hepco & Becker uses innovative magnetic technology to secure tank bags to motorbikes. The bag is guided into place by powerful and durable magnets, whose sole function it is to position the tank bag into the holder in the upper ring. The actual mounting is on maintenance-free and wear-resistant guides which clasp the tank bag firmly in place on the basis that opposite magnetic poles attract. When the lock is unlocked, the same poles are aligned and repel each other, a simple but effective mechanism. Lock It is easily mounted on the tank filler

together with the silencers and collectors. Arrow has designed a full system, made with stainless steel collectors and 2:1 mid-pipe and a choice of different silencers, available in two different shapes (Race-Tech and Works) and in different materials. The stainless steel collectors are used with Arrow silencers. The kit is made with front and rear collectors and a 2:1 mid-pipe with collectors fitted to original headers. The Race-Tech silencers are available in the following versions: titanium body and carbon endcap, carbon fibre body and endcap, aluminium body and carbon endcap and black anodised aluminium body and carbon endcap. The Works silencer has a titanium body and carbon endcap. All the silencers come with a removable dBkiller. Silencers are fixed to the frame by means of a stainless steel bracket and a metal plate is provided to be fitted to the exhaust valve actuator engine: the plate simulates the exhaust valve to eliminate the warning message that appears when the exhaust valve is removed. Arrow says these systems can give up to 6hp extra power, depending on the silencer. The power increase starts to be noticeable from 3,500rpm.

GIVI 3D range with Easylock THE latest range from the Italian luggage specialist is 3D, which has both hard and soft options and an innovative patented locking system. It currently consists of TPH01 side bags and the TPH02 saddle bag, but more products will be launched over the year. 3D TPH01 side bags are made of thermoplastic material covered with polyester (structure) and polyurethane (lid) and completed with reflective trim and a large zipper. The flexible frame combines the advantages of both hard and soft bags, the company says, and is completely waterproof as well as lightweight. They are designed for nakeds and sportsbikes where bulky luggage will affect looks and aerodynamics. Another feature of the 3D TPH01 is the organisation of the inside compartments, with a meshed compartment on the lid and X-shaped elastic straps to firmly hold the luggage. Other standard fitments are: the bag/frame locking key, a rain cover, and a lock to close the two zips. Each bag has a 15-litre internal volume with dimensions of 450x220x290mm. TPH01 is also the first bag to integrate the Easylock fitting system, which allows opening and closing in just a few seconds. The bags are key-locked to the dedicated metal frames, which have a TE frame made from 10 mm diameter tubular pipe. 3D TPH02 is a compact tank bag with a sports look

aimed at urban riders and owners of nakeds and sportsbikes. Its lid has a compartment for a Smartphone with navigation unit and compartments for other items including coins and a glasses holder. The rain cover and the carrying strap are fitted as standard. The Tanklock fitting system used on the TPH02 is a rapid fastening made of two elements: an adaptor at the bottom of the bag and a flange, to be fitted on the tank cap. It can be attached by pressing lightly until it clicks into place, and a red lever located in the flange base is pulled for release. Flanges are sold separately and must be compatible with the bike. Upgraded Pivot Pegz now available THREE years after introducing Pivot Pegz Mk2 TÜV-certified footrests to the European market, they are now available as an updated Mk3 version available for most bike models, and come with 60mm tread width, the widest and lightest of their kind. They guarantee more control and balance and steadiness for the rider, the company says, and also make it easier to use the gears and reach the brake lever. Furthermore wear and tear of boots is

reduced and riding for longer periods standing up is not as tiring, as evidenced by the many testimonials the company has received, including from Dakar Rally riders. The new, joint-saving movable foot controls Mk3 promise touring and cross riders more riding enjoyment because the integrated spring joint allows any movement of the foot to the front and the rear. That not only saves boots but also gives better control of the bike, which is is not only vital for offroad riders, but also for riders who spend long periods on the road. MIVV Ghibli MIVV’s elegant top-of-the-range Ghibli exhausts are made using light but extremely strong materials and are available in two versions, the first full titanium and the second AISI 304 stainless steel. Optimised for motorcycles 600cc and larger bikes, the increased volume gives much improved performance and a well-rounded and recognisable sound, the company says. There is no standard layout for Ghibli with the number of bends and configuration dependent on the model, and maximum aesthetic harmony with the bike being the main consideration for the designers.

The shapes and the winding design of this exhaust make it fully compatible with both sports and naked models, and they can be fitted both laterally and on some models in an underbelly position. In addition to lightness, the other special characteristics of the MIVV silencer is the fact that it is fully TIG welded, including the brackets, and that it has a dB-killer secured in position, using three socket screws. INDUSTRY EXTRA

Interview and words by Al Franck - al@dealer-world.com Nitron Racing Systems designs and manufactures a range of highperformance shock absorbers for cars and motorcycles, all developed to racing standards and designed in-house. IDN visited the company at its base in Witney near Oxford in central England to hear from owner and CEO Guy Evans what the future holds for this rapidly-expanding company UY Evans says he has been obsessed about anything with an engine since he was a small child. “We used to live out in the country near a motocross track and I pestered my parents continually to allow me to go and watch. They didn’t let me ride there, probably because they saw too many crashes, but I got involved in car racing when I was 17. By the time I was 21, I had built three GT specials from scratch and was the first person in the UK to build a composite honeycomb monocoque.” After studying industrial design at university, he joined the Royal Air Force, following in the footsteps of his test pilot father, and after leaving had a series of jobs including designing the Marcos Le Mans cars. “I love cars,” he says, “but bikes have always been very special for me – I’ve been a rider for a very long time.” His experience with shock absorbers started with performance car suspension specialist Spax, where he worked in the racing division. “I came up with the kind of product line you see here at Nitron, but the owner wasn’t interested, so I left and joined WP just before it was taken over by KTM, worked on Penskes and finally set up Nitron in 1998.” Evans started out making car products, but one of the people he worked with at WP told him he needed to get involved in bike shocks. “I was

unconvinced, but made a limited line and took them to the Ally Pally show where I met a number of distributors and dealers who were really positive, and they sold well.” In the beginning the bike products were only possible because of the money the company was making from car shocks, but now the latter is selfsupporting, and he is convinced Nitron’s future will be principally in the bike sector. The company currently offers a large range of high-performance shocks either in kit form or specially built to customer requirements, covering every motorcycle segment. The modular nature of all Nitron products means they are fully serviceable, and the company can offer specials and low number runs at particularly competitive prices. n 2008 Nitron moved to its present 800 sq.m. facility in Witney as part of an ongoing expansion programme, and 15 are now employed on the site. All products are developed using the latest 3D solid-modelling CAD techniques and the extensive in-house test facilities ensure each damper is fully calibrated before delivery. The company is also ISO 9001 accredited. “Our whole manufacturing process is geared to modularity and customisation, based on the manufacturing model introduced to Japan by US engineer William Edwards Deming after WW2,” says Evans. “Our tooling and assembly system enables us to do runs of 10 as

I

INDUSTRY EXTRA

All design work is done in-house with the latest CAD systems

easily as runs of 1,000 or more.” The facility has 40 shock assembly stations and a number of test rigs to ensure full geometry set-up, using the very latest Beissbarth 8 camera alignment system with combined simultaneous live dual load cell corner weighting, all developed in-house. Each Nitron shock is optimised for the weight of the rider and its intended use. “We have our own R&D and prototyping CNC machines in this building, but all of our production parts are made by specialist aerospace and automotive sub-contractors with advanced CNC machines in other parts of the UK, principally Devon and the West Midlands,” says Evans. Of the many different types of shock absorber, Nitron specialises in gas monotubes, which cool better than twin tube systems with a second tube inside because of the increased air contact, but they are trickier to make. Gas monotubes are filled with oil and have a secondary gas canister, whether pistol style, piggyback or attached to a remote reservoir via a hose, with the oil and gas separated by a finely machined piston. hey are made from aerospace-grade aluminium alloys and stainless steel, which reduces mass and inertia whilst improving cooling, and after CNC billet machining they are hard and titanium anodised for protection against corrosion. Because Nitron’s bike shocks are all hand-built to order and made from the highest specification components to exacting tolerances, Evans says the result is a lightweight shock with excellent anti-fade properties that will last a long time. Other features include Teflon-lined bearings and bushes to stop metal-on-metal friction, ultra-low friction seal design, length adjustment fitted as standard, sealed adjusters and a third piston shim stack for very low speed rebound control. The shocks are fully rebuildable and revalveable, have easy adjustment and an infinite range of compression/rebound ratios. In a reversal from the usual set-up, all

T

manufacturing takes place in the UK and parts are then exported, including to the Far East. Outside the UK, the company’s main market is Japan, where partner Nitron Japan is the second largest supplier of aftermarket shock absorbers after Öhlins. “Our Japanese partner company started out rebuilding suspension systems and has a lot of experience,” says Evans. “I met the owner and we decided to work together – this has been an important part of our success. They are independent and not financially linked to us in any way. We make all the parts, ship them out, and they buy them from us, assemble the shocks and sell them on. We are totally dependent on each other’s goodwill – a system that I don’t think would work anywhere outside Japan.” ost bike R&D takes place in Japan, where the partner has close relations with the press and OEMs, and so gets early access to new models. The Japanese bike market, although it has shrunk in recent years, is still very important. “It is a very visually-oriented market – there is lots of customisation going on. We now have a comprehensive range of aftermarket twin shocks, possibly the most comprehensive in the world, but only for the Japanese market. Elsewhere it’s all monoshocks.” “The reason we have been so successful there is the ease with which our shocks can be customised. The Japanese consumer expects a wide range of choice and due to the modular nature of the parts, which can be assembled in many different ways, we can offer that choice. Apart from the technical specifications, the spring platform might be available in gold, silver and black, the spring in black, red or turquoise and the body in a wide range of colours. We also do limited edition shocks, for example Stealth-themed in uniform black. “In Japan they recently introduced their own web order system where each part can be specified and a colour-coordinated shock built up. They then get a code for this, which can be ordered online or taken

M

Nitron has four stock specifications for motorcycles HE NTR Sport shock is intended principally as a road shock and uses a single combined damping adjuster to control both rebound and compression in ratio to each other. It also has spring preload adjustment and in most cases ride height adjustment. The NTR Track is a more sophisticated unit intended for road, trackday and race use. It uses two damping control adjustments to independently control rebound and compression. It also has spring preload adjustment and most units are ride height adjustable. The NTR Race is intended primarily for racing and track use with specifications the same as the Track shock, but with the addition of independently adjustable high and low speed compression damping. The newest addition to the range is the NTR Race Pro, aimed at the serious track or race user. It has all the features of the three-way adjustable NTR Race but uses a wider 46mm piston and 16mm rod to provide an even higher level of damping control and fade resistance.

Staff bikes are used to test new products

to a dealer. All parts should be in stock, and delivery is usually less than a week. Japanese riders love this, and no one else can do it. Also, the price will be the same as the equivalent Öhlins item.” When asked how this is possible given the additional cost of the personalisation process at Nitron, Evans says: “I don’t know for sure, but I think it’s because our overheads are lower. Their racing programme, for example, must be very expensive.” But this competition is not necessarily a zero sum game, according to Evans. “Every weekend our Japanese partners are out at a track somewhere, and Öhlins joined them at the trackside two years ago. This had the positive effect of both company’s sales increasing, as customers who in the past might have been happy with their OEM fittings realise that they can improve performance with high-end aftermarket shocks. So, between us, we’re educating the market.” Production in Japan hasn’t been affected by the recent disasters, but order levels have.“The Japanese have rather more important things to think about at the moment than bikes,” says Evans. “But having said that, both my Japanese partner and I believe human nature is very resilient, and they will soon want to forget about what’s going on and get back to their passion for motorcycles.” he company’s other major market is the UK, where again it is second only to Öhlins. “I didn’t specifically set out to take on Öhlins, but people kept asking ‘How does this compare to Öhlins’, and so in the end it became the mental position here that this was who we were competing against. And this has enabled us to produce better and better shocks,” says Evans. Colour customisation is only really a big issue with twin shocks, which are highly visible on the bike. Because a monoshock is buried deep within the internals, most of Nitron’s UK bike business is standard coloured shock absorbers with a silver body, gold elements and a turquoise spring. This instantly recognisable colour scheme has become an

T

INTERNATIONAL DEALER NEWS - MAY 2011

important marketing tool, giving brand recognition across much of the UK motorcycle market. “We will continue to push the turquoise branded product to increase our visibility,” he adds. “In the UK we’re considered very much the established alternative to Öhlins, and most of our bike growth recently has come from this market,” says Evans.“I saw an old friend of mine, a keen biker, for the first time after a long period the other day and he said: ‘I’m seeing turquoise spring shocks everywhere nowadays!’ I think what happens is that in the two main markets where we operate, people have realised we’re here to stay and that we make good stuff: we’re not one of those brands that suddenly appear on the market from an importer and then fizzle out.” Colour options are available in the UK, for example a red Eibach spring, but at a price. Nitron can also supply specials, for example shocks for drag bikes or ones that are shorter than standard. n the UK, there has been little sales and marketing effort until recently, according to Evans. “We have literally been engineering our way forward for the last ten years and other people have found us. We haven’t done any promotion or advertising. We have been expanding just through keeping our heads down and getting on with it.What tended to happen was that someone installed our shocks, really liked them and our reputation spread by word of mouth.” This has now changed with the appointment of Mark Tapscott as Sales and Marketing Manager. “I am thinking all the time about how to make the best possible shock absorber,” says Evans,“but now Mark says to me: ‘It’s not just about that.We actually have to tell people about what we have available as well!’” Nitron’s main UK distributors are PDQ and Harris Performance, with Harwood Performance for advertising sales. The company also has an internet shop. “This sets a retail price, which some people think is good and some bad, and it can upset some

of our foreign dealings, but in the main we set a high retail price and provide big discounts so everyone is happy. We have to be careful about the balance of the market because, for example, Japanese sales tax is 5% and that in the UK is 20%.” He says he has no intention of getting involved in OEM supply. “My experience is that it’s a tough business to be in. The schedule of payments is often the problem – first of all they don’t want to pay you the going rate and then they delay payment until well after the agreed date. The attitude is often that it is a privilege to supply them and that should be enough!” itron’s existing range covers all bike sectors except cruisers, customs and quads. The company only recently moved into the offroad market, and Evans says how that happened is a good illustration of how new business often materialises without the company actively seeking it. “Suzuki GB came to us and asked for MX shocks, but I told them I wasn’t interested because I thought it would be too complex for us at the time. But they kept pestering us and so we dipped our toes in, found it was something we could do and started supplying the Suzuki GB Junior team. They’re doing really well and there’s a possibility of us now supplying the Seniors, and they have ordered a relatively large

N

number of professional-level shocks from us.The MX product has only been available since the start of 2011, and we’ll be expanding this progressively.” Other expansion will soon take place into the Harley and quad markets. “We have a range of Harley shocks in Japan, but like the twin shocks, we don’t currently sell those over here. The Harley shocks in Japan are very expensive and we would have to introduce them to the UK or Europe at a similar price, but even so we think there is a market for them. And we’re definitely interested in moving into the quad market on the back of our growing MX experience. This isn’t a large market in Japan, but is potentially huge if we look at a potential market like the USA.” At the moment Nitron is only present in a significant way in the UK and Japan, but Evans says he is very interested in expanding elsewhere. “We’re putting feelers out into France and Spain at the moment, and Italy and Germany are future possibilities, alongside the USA and South East Asian countries. What I am actively looking for are countrywide sole distributors for western and central European countries. On the bike line we can give reasonable discounts, and although everything is built to order, we supply everything that is ordered, even a single shock, unlike Öhlins, which will want advance orders and won’t build and ship until they get sufficient order levels.” The Nitron CEO says that recent expansion has been rapid, with sales increasing at an annual average of 30% over the last few years. The current mix is 70% car and 30% bike, but the main reason for this is that four shocks are sold for every car, but only one per bike. At Witney most employees work either on one product or the other, and future plans include taking on additional space in the industrial unit next door to separate the two activities. ccording to Evans, the company is also working on two new fork projects, the first an in-fork cartridge system keeping the externals of the existing fork, and the other a complete set of forks for twin shock bikes for the Japanese market. He thinks these will be ready for launch in a year or so. “The twin-shock fork model will be the first to be launched and will be different from other products on the market, with a high/low speed compression

A

valve rather than a single valve, and will be quite modern-looking, but will still be a conventional, rather than upside-down fork. These will be expensive products, so this is probably never going to be a dominant part of the business, but it is still an important part of the mix.” The company also undertakes design and development for third parties, and is currently working on forks for a high-end electric bike currently under development by an overseas manufacturer. Evans says he has no plans to build steering dampers because OEM versions are increasingly good, and he doesn’t see it as an expanding market. n the immediate future, Evans will be heavily involved in setting up a subsidiary in Singapore to cover the South-East Asian market. “We’ll supply them from the UK, and, like the Japanese operation, they’ll have access to our dyno files and will assemble over there, but unlike in Japan I will be part-owner. I used to live in Hong Kong and have some experience of those markets. ” Further on, Evans has some tough decisions to make if the company continues to expand at the rate of the last few years. “We haven’t borrowed anything so far except to pay for some of our equipment – all expansion has been on the back of sales. This has given me the peace of mind to know that I’m totally in control at all times. “But as we expand, more and more of our profit gets tied up in cashflow. Our projections show that the current model can’t continue for ever, so I’m looking at possible solutions. It might be good to partner with someone who has experience at the next level and can help us avoid the many pitfalls that we will undoubtedly face, but I really like running my own show and not having to answer to anyone else. We will see!” Evans also thinks that in future the bike side will grow at the expense of car activities. “It’s getting harder in the car market – there’s more competition, and many more possible styles and applications. It’s harder for a small player to make a mark anyway, but the styling is changing, with bigger tyres and lower wheel arches giving less space available for suspension systems, making it

I

Engineer Tim Aust working on a prototype for a Suzuki GB Junior team bike

ever more difficult for an aftermarket suspension supplier. “The new Mini, for example, has hardly any space available and is posing us real problems, whereas on the bike side the new ZX10R will be problematic, but I know we’ll come up with a good solution. “Also, new legislation affecting cars makes providing aftermarket products generally ever more difficult.” o the future will throw up many challenges, but Nitron has faced equally serious ones in the past and come out on top. Evans is quietly proud of what his company has achieved over the last thirteen years. “We are high-end, a difficult position to be in, but we have made huge progress over the last few years in the UK and Japan and are now second behind Öhlins in both markets, and catching up fast. “The main difference between us is that, whereas with Öhlins everything has a part number and comes out of a box, all our shocks are customisable and built to order. That’s an important USP. “And we haven’t concentrated on racing, but racing has come our way. We won the Manx GP last year and achieved a third in the TT Seniors, so they do perform properly in the most testing conditions. All the bikes in the Triumph Triple Challenge run our shocks, and the organisers there are constantly checking us against the competition and remain happy with us. “As far as bike products are concerned, we have established ourselves on two important markets as a proper, high-quality brand. The sector really likes our product – its style, performance, fit and reliability – which makes me confident we have built solid foundations for future expansion.”

2011 Arai RX-7 GP TT helmets IN 2010 Arai introduced a new sponsoring scheme for the Isle of Man TT organisation: a series of three Arai RX-7 GP TT helmets, with a limited production run of 500 units in Europe, of which a substantial commission of the profit went directly to the TT organisation. For the new edition in 2011, top Italian designer Aldo Drudi has designed a tribute for the 100th anniversary of the Mountain Course, which first came into use in 1911. Each run of these limited edition Isle of Man TT helmets is still strictly limited to 500 helmets in Europe and the Isle of Man TT organisation receives a commission for every helmet sold, with all parties involved (Arai Japan, Arai Europe and Phoenix Distribution) agreeing to minimise their margins significantly. The 2011 Isle of Man TT Series edition is priced at E899,00 including VAT (£699.99) and will be exclusively distributed by Arai’s UK importer Phoenix Distribution through dealer Crossan Motorcycles. This second (2011) edition is initially offered to the owners of the first (2010) edition. The first edition was offered with a special three-helmet display and the orange-white-blue 2011 edition should complement this display. Any remaining 2011 edition helmets are offered for sale during the Isle of Man TT races itself. The Arai RX-7 GP Isle of Man TT

Series mini-website is part of the www.araihelmeteurope.com website and has been updated for the 2011 edition. Full information about the 2011 Isle of Man TT Series can be found here. Raleri visor inserts LIGHTSHADE FogStop visor inserts are part of a line of high optical grade anti-fog inserts which include the photochromic PCShade, which the company says are revolutionising helmet optics. They have an anti-moisture system that both absorbs and drains away water, and the superb optical quality is due to its special material and to the narrowness (0.5 mm). It is available in five static colours (clear, dark, high definition, mirror, metal-coated) and a photochromatic version. They attach to the visor via the transparent Raleri gasket, which also improves the antifog effect, creating a sealed air chamber between insert and

LightShade is available in three versions: Standard, for tourer and jet helmets; Small, for race and sport helmets and Arai compatible, to be installed on helmets having the Arai Vent system. Personalised helmets from NZI NZI Helmets has introduced and patented a novel technique to print any digital photo or artwork directly on the helmet shell. The company’s 3-D helmets programme uses a machine that can print a picture or design with a determined size, resolution and format on the shell. The finish of the helmets can be glossy satin or shiny; the glossy satin finish is not microporous, so does not get dirty. The company says any image can be used (as long as copyright is respected) including company logos, a photo of a band, team, individual, or an advertisement. Currently, NZI is creating a new website that will soon be available for those who wish to create a customdecorated helmet for themselves.

Ufo Plast Warrior Dexter jacket and Sicuro glove UFO Plast says its Warrior H1 is unique on the market with an outer shell in two sizes made from cross-layered carbon, Aramid fibres, fibreglass and polyester. The shape of the lower part of the shell is designed to reduce collision angles with the rider’s body and match the neck-brace supports. New comfort features include what the company calls a sophisticated and functional multivent ventilation system ensuring air flow both in the lower and upper part of the shell, thanks to an internal channel system using three upper extractors which work even at low speed, and two rear extractors. The inside is made from quality materials and is completely extractable, non-allergic and washable, and consists of four linings which are attached to the shell with automatic press studs. As well as the latest Advanced style,

the Warrior H1 comes in four other versions (Trail, Tribal, Eagle and Base) and seven different colours.

INTERNATIONAL DEALER NEWS - MAY 2011

NEWS ROOM

NEWS Hendrik von Kuenheim DESK new ACEM President Zero Motorcycles has received an additional $26 million from its investors. “With this investment, we will continue to ramp up our US-based electric motorcycle production while rapidly expanding our global sales footprint,” says CEO Gene Banman. Zero also recently announced the departure of its founder, Neal Saiki. Isle of Man TT organisers are considering an international series of TT races from as early as 2014. “We are in the early stages of a consultation process and would welcome approaches from potential partners who are interested in the venture,” said Allan Bell, the Isle of Man's Minister of Economic Development. Moto Guzzi is marking its 90th anniversary with a celebration at its birthplace in Mandello del Lario, near Como in northern Italy. Thousands of Moto Guzzi enthusiasts are expected to attend the celebration and tour the modernised Moto Guzzi factory in Mandello at the Giornate Mondiali Guzzi (Guzzi World Days) in mid-September. A release from TTXGP says the FIM and TTXGP electric racing sanctions have looked into the possibility of holding a selection of joint rounds to promote clean emissions sport and technology, as well as jointly supporting a World Championship event in October.

ACEM, the European Motorcycle Industry Association, has announced that its General Assembly unanimously appointed BMW Motorrad’s General Director Hendrik von Kuenheim as the new President of the association with effect

from 1st July 2011. He will replace Stefan Pierer, the CEO of KTM, who will continue as Vice President, together with Leo Francesco Mercanti of Piaggio. www.acem.eu

Suzuki fuel-cell scooter wins EU type-approval THE Suzuki Burgman has become the world’s first fuel-cell vehicle to earn Whole Vehicle Type Approval in the European Union, enabling the model to be sold in all member states. The Burgman fuel-cell scooter was launched at the 41st Tokyo Motor Show in October 2009 and since February 2010, Suzuki and British company Intelligent Energy, which developed the Burgman’s fuel-cell system, have been jointly participating in trials of the scooter on public roads with the cooperation of the British government’s Technology Strategy Board. The trials are being conducted in the area surrounding Loughborough University in central England using a single unit, with others soon to join the programme. The Burgman fuel-cell scooter is based on Suzuki’s existing petrolengined Burgman model. The company aims to make eco-friendly fuel-cell scooters increasingly common in Europe in line with the establishment of hydrogen filling stations and other necessary infrastructure. It also demonstrated an Intelligent Energy fuel-cell powered concept performance motorcycle, the

Crosscage, in Tokyo two years ago. Intelligent Energy says the Burgman’s 70MPa hydrogen fuel tank (the highest pressure tank ever used) delivers quick refuelling, good riding range and a robust frame for increased safety. The scooter uses the latest version of Intelligent Energy‘s unique and proprietary PEM clean fuel cell engine. Electricity produced by the fuel cell powers the engine, whose only emission is water. “The zero-emissions Burgman

scooter is the latest product of the successful commercial relationship between Suzuki and Intelligent Energy”, commented Intelligent Energy CEO Dr. Henri Winand. “This technology will be widely available to everyone in the near future. With a mass market of about 40 million units per annum, there is a lot to go after”. www.globalsuzuki.com/ globalnews/2011/0309.html www.intelligent-energy.com
