As the smoke clears ONDA’S 2010 Motorcycle Business Review of Operations provides an interesting overview of how the market is evolving for the powersports giant, and indeed how the worldwide market is changing for all manufacturers as traditional markets mature and Asia takes off. Total unit sales of Honda motorcycles, ATVs and personal watercraft totalled 9.6 million in 2010, down 4.7% on the previous year. Compared to 2009, unit sales fell 40.9% to 189,000 in North America, 27.9% to 199,000 in Europe, 18.1% to 190,000 in Japan and 18.7% to 1.43 million in other regions, but rose by 1.4% to 7.6 million in Asia. Revenue decreased 19.2% to ¥1,140.2bn (E10.04bn), again with only Asia showing a small increase over the year. The global industry was significantly affected by the economic crisis, with the impact much more severely felt in the developed markets of Europe, Japan and North America, where there were high double-digit declines in sales from 2008 through 2010. On the other hand, the developing economies of Latin America and Asia fared relatively better, recording marginal falls in growth rates. As the situation stabilises, the smoke is starting to clear and we can begin to see what the future may hold for the powered two-wheeler industry worldwide. Whereas Europe, Japan and North America accounted for only 6% of Honda’s unit sales in 2010 (against 15% for other regions and 79% for Asia), in terms of value these markets, although significantly down on past years, still accounted for over 26% of the group’s powersports revenues in 2010. This compares with 34% for other regions and 40% for Asia. Most sales on the Asian market are small mopeds and motorcycles with limited profit on sales or spares, while the premiums on bikes sold in Europe and the USA are relatively large. What this means is that although Honda and the other Japanese OEMs are likely to spend an increasing amount of time and effort servicing the Asian market, the traditional Western and Japanese markets will remain important. The ¥300bn (E2.64bn) in revenues the group still makes in these markets is a lot of money, even for Honda. Another factor that will support significant parts of the motorcycle industry in the West and Japan is the thriving second-hand market. Most bikes sold there are now very reliable indeed, and there is still a large bike park in circulation

H

compared to even ten years ago and the riders of those bikes will still need to get them serviced, to replace worn-out parts and buy themselves apparel and helmets. Another trend is the gathering impetus towards eco-bikes and scooters, particularly at the smaller end of the market where industry observers predict the majority of under 50cc (and perhaps also under 125cc) equivalent vehicles will be powered by electric, hybrid and other alternative power sources in as little as 5 years’ time,as motor and power storage technology improvements coincide with ever-increasing oil prices. Another important trend in mature markets is a decline in leisure motorcycle use, as reflected in the fall in sportsbike sales, and the big increase in commuting. This is where world markets are converging. In developing markets such as China, India and South East Asian countries, motorcycles, scooters and mopeds are also usually essential modes of transportation for their purchasers. There are exceptions to this – as the middle classes expand in India and China the market for performance machines will grow there – but in general terms a more utilitarian dynamic is emerging and those who can take advantage of this will find themselves in the strongest position. In recent months this has been confirmed to me in a number of conversations with European parts distributors, who are expanding commuter ranges and reducing their lines for larger motorcycles in response to market demand. Some have criticised the Japanese OEMs for failing to anticipate these changes, with the resulting collapse in sales in the West and Japan, and a knock-on effect across the whole of the industry which was geared to servicing their market model. But Honda for one is playing the long game, and will soon be offering a very strong range of alternative energy vehicles, as well as a beefed-up range of commuter machines for most pockets. Expect to see fewer model launches at the larger end of the scale but increased availability in mature markets of adapted versions of the cheap but well-built models that have taken developing countries by storm.

Motorsport Aftermarket Group (MAG) of Irvine, California, has set up a Japanese subsidiary under Yoshi Kitaura, who will report to Thomas Breed, MAG’s Managing Director of International Sales. The subsidiary will sell Kuryakyn, Vance & Hines, Performance Machine, Renthal, Progressive Suspension, RSD, and Mustang Seats into the recovering Japanese market. According to the Business Standard,Victory is preparing to launch on the Indian market in the second half of 2012 with the import of fully assembled units. If that initial run is successful, the Polaris subsidiary will set up an assembly plant to avoid India’s high import duties. American Suzuki is recalling 74,000 motorcycles built between 2007 and 2009 due to an electrical fault. The problem affects Burgmans, Hayabusas, V-Storms, GSXR600/750s, Bandits, B-Kings, GSX650Fs, SFV650s, VL800s,VLR1800s and VZ1500s. Scorpion Exhausts of the UK has appointed TAW Performance of Sonoma, California, as its US distributor.

THE second edition of the Eicma China exhibition will be held at the China National Convention Center in Beijing from 2 to 4 July. Dealers and distributors are the focus of the 2011 event, whose primary aim is to foster trade relations between industry operators. The organisers, China-Italy Motorcycle Exhibition, say the first Eicma China in 2010 exceeded all expectations with a total surface area of 23,000 sq.m. and 122 exhibitors. The show is a collaboration between the Italian motorcycle trade association ANCMA, China Chamber of Commerce of Motorcycle (CCCM) and Genertec International Advertising & Exhibition Co, as well as the Italian and Chinese governments. The China National Convention

Center in Beijing is one of China’s premier exhibition venues and is situated next to the spectacular Bird’s Nest Stadium, built for the 2008 Olympics. The organisers say they have a range of solutions to attract participation and to keep down costs, including smaller

stands and turnkey solutions in different sizes that are simple and yet highly competitive. Duo-Drive pillion handle THE German-designed Duo-Drive is a grab handle for pillion passengers on sports and touring bikes which bolts onto the fuel tank using the filler cap bolts, meaning no modification is required to the motorcycle and it can be easily removed when no longer required. Available in aluminium alloy or carbon finish, each fitting kit comes with specifically sized bolts to suit the particular bike brand and model year. Developed in cooperation with German racer Roland Debschütz, the manufacturer says the handle

improves safety by making the pillion more secure and less likely to shift or slide forward, enabling the rider to concentrate more on the road. www.duo-drive.de

Ducati scrambler and scooter? Ducati General Manager Claudio Domenicali

Didier Ganneau, editor of French motorcycle trade magazine L'Officiel du Cycle, de la Moto et du Quad, takes a look at the major issues currently affecting the industry in his country.

Hello from France IF ITALY is Europe’s scooter paradise, France is its biggest market for true motorcycles, with around 100,000 sold there every year. It is also the biggest market for mopeds (145,442), ATVs (30,000), Piaggio MP3s (12,000), Can-Am Spyders (800) and licensefree light cars (15,000). France is also the largest European market not only for Peugeot but also for Yamaha/ MBK, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Harley, KTM, Gas Gas, and even Triumph (outside of Britain). And the French powered two-wheeler industry is second only to Italy’s on the continent, following the closure of the Honda and Yamaha plants in Catalonia. Peugeot produces 50,000 scooters a year, MBK a similar number, and though Voxan finally shut last year, Side-Bike, Wakan and Sherco/Scorpa/HRD are alive and well. There is also a thriving apparel and components manufacturing sector, with makers of helmets (Shark, Roof and GPA…), clothing (Bering, Ixon, Furygan, Segura, Kenny...), lubricants (Motul, Igol, Ipone...) and parts and accessories (Michelin, Devil, Afam, Bagster, Ermax, Beringer, Fournalès, EMC...) all doing well despite the relatively difficult economic circumstances. I will be writing about PTW-sector developments across France in IDN every three months or so. So until the next time, au revoir!

IN an exclusive interview with Italy’s Motosprint magazine, Ducati Product Director and General Manager Claudio Domenicali revealed that the Italian marque is seriously thinking of developing a scrambler-style motorcycle and a maxiscooter. Domenicali said that Ducati wants to increase production to 60,000 bikes a year, and to achieve this needs to branch out into other market segments. He also confirmed that as well as the new plant being built in Thailand to cover the Asian market, the company will build another in Brazil to gain access to the South American market, thus getting around import taxes that restrict sales in these two increasingly important areas.

Renault 4-wheel electric scooter substitute CAR maker Renault has entered the light commuter market with the all-electric Twizy, which is designed to tempt commuters who might otherwise opt for a scooter. At just 1.19m wide and 2.3m long, and with a bikestyle tandem seating position, its footprint is not much bigger than a motorcycle, and Renault claims that, like a two wheeler, tests have shown it can cut commuting time by an average of 25%. It will go on sale at the end of 2011 at a price of E6,900 inclusive of taxes, similar to a Piaggio MP3, and its energy-efficient status will enable the purchaser to benefit

from subsidies in most countries. Renault Twizy customers will lease the battery at a cost of E45 a month inclusive of taxes for an annual distance travelled of 7,500km. The company says running costs will be 15% lower than those of a threewheeled scooter. The 15kW (20hp) version will require a driving licence, and the 4kW (5hp) version will not in certain European countries. Thanks to an integrated charger, its cable is compatible with roadside battery charging facilities, and an adapter permits the cable to be plugged into any 220V 10A household

electrical supply. The battery fully charges in three-and-a-half hours. www.renault.com/en/vehicules/renault/pa ges/twizy.aspx

French PTW Acumen moves to larger premises fatalities THE French Transport Ministry says deaths fell by 20% for motorcycles and 12% for mopeds in 2010. In 2009 there were 1,144 deaths altogether: in 2010 the figure dropped to 941. Transport Minister Brice Hortefeux said the decline was due to the government’s hardline approach to all aspects of road safety, including speeding, and that these policies would be expanded in 2011. www.developpementdurable.gouv.fr

ACUMEN Electronics has relocated to larger premises in the town of Andover, Hampshire. Managing Director David Martin said: “Our warehouse and despatch areas are bigger and more efficient so customers will benefit. And, as we also own the unit next door, future planned expansion is assured.” With demand for the company’s Acutrac tracker units and Diva portable alarms soaring, the new products are already starting to flow with the launch of a new, mid priced, Acutrac Locator Plus tracker due imminently

Mahindra eyes Indian motorcycle mass-market (with Italian help...) THE Indian powered two-wheeler (PTW) market is experiencing stratospheric growth, with over 11 million motorcycles and scooters sold in the sub-continent in 2010, a massive 31% rise on 2009 figures. As production of the KTM 125 Duke kicks off at the Bajaj Auto plant in Pune, India - first fruits of the joint venture between the Austrian kings of dirt and India’s second-largest motorcycle manufacturer, which now owns 38% of KTM - another Indian company is stepping onto the world stage, this time via MotoGP racing. In 2011 Bajaj Auto’s neighbouring rival Mahindra Two Wheelers (MTW), also based in Pune, will become the first Indian manufacturer to enter a team in Grand Prix racing, when riders Danny Webb from the UK and Marcel Schrötter from Germany ride for Mahindra Racing in the 125cc two-stroke category’s final season. But this is only a preview for the introduction of the 250cc four-stroke single Moto3 category in 2012, in which Mahindra intends to be present with its own bike designed and developed by its Italian subsidiary, Engines Engineering, in Castenaso, outside Bologna. MTW is a recently-formed subsidiary of the giant $7.1 billion (E5.1bn) Mumbai-based Mahindra Group, an automotive, IT, aerospace, farm equipment and real estate conglomerate, which is the preferred bidder to take over Korea’s ailing Ssangyong car maker. It has a global workforce of more than 100,000 people, and was set up in 1945. In August 2008 it expanded into the two-wheeled sector by purchasing an 80% interest in the Kinetic Group,a wellregarded but relatively small Indian scooter manufacturer which had previously acquired the rights to most of the products of the defunct Italian Bologna-based scooter maker Italjet. Under Mahindra’s ownership sales have

mushroomed by a massive 225% in the current Indian fiscal year from April to March, with the company set to manufacture 160,000 scooters and small capacity motorcycles headlined by the 110cc Stallio in the current 12-month period - small beer compared to Bajaj Auto’s 4,000,000 bikes produced during the same time, although with the resources of its multi-national parent behind it, Mahindra has big plans for the future, and its participation in 125GP racing, and in future the Moto3 category, is intended to give it a global presence on two wheels. However, Mahindra’s prestige 300cc Mojo motorcycle launched on the Indian market last September has yet to reach production - the difficulty of finding local suppliers to furnish components for the India industry’s first modern-spec model over 250cc in capacity (always excepting the venerable pushrod-engined Royal Enfield Bullet) to the required quality being cited as the reason. For this Indo-

INTERNATIONAL DEALER NEWS - APRIL 2011

Italian design is a good deal more sophisticated than anything yet produced in India before the arrival of the Bajaj-built KTM 125 Duke (which will be sold in India as a 200cc model). Indeed, the Mojo was developed in Italy by Engines Engineering/EE, itself a whollyowned Mahindra subsidiary since June 2008. It seems that Mahindra Group management’s strategy on entering the PTW sector just over two years ago entailed purchasing an existing Indian manufacturing operation in Kinetic, then looking to expand its product portfolio beyond the scooters and motorcycles that it already made, by purchasing a European R&D house to ensure a flow of stylish new products to allow it to build volume. Engines Engineering was founded in 1979 by Alberto Strazzari, who continues to direct it today, and has since functioned as a one-stop R&D facility in developing new models from the ground up for many European and Asian

manufacturers as diverse as Benelli, Beta,Ducati,Gilera,Honda,Yamaha and especially its close neighbour, Malaguti, for which EE also developed and ran a 125GP bike in 2004-6. However results were disappointing, and Malaguti pulled out after three seasons of lack-lustre performance. Mahindra acquired Engines Engineering in 2008, but it was Chinese manufacturer Loncin which Strazzari then enlisted to pay the bills in 2009,before this relationship also folded in the face of dismal results. For 2010, it was the turn of revived Italian scooter brand Lambretta to paint its name on what was the same essential motorcycle as the Malaguti five years earlier, which once again proved slow, and unreliable, so that by August, Lambretta too pulled out. Instead, EE’s owner Mahindra has now picked up its chequebook, but will surely insist that Strazzari and his engineers make a better attempt at delivering the goods this time around. So, no pressure, then - which makes it interesting to see if Kent and Schrötter have an all-new bike for this final season of Grand Prix two-stroke racing, since the existing one has not proved up to much. Mahindra is also developing an allnew 250cc four-stroke single by EE, which besides competing at world level in Moto3 from 2012 onwards, will also be available for customer purchase around the world as the category takes off as an entry-level class at National level.Furthermore, according to a source within Mahindra, it’s planned that the company’s Moto3 design will form the basis of developing road racing within India.“With the completion of the Delhi circuit for the Formula 1 race there this October, we will have two world-class tracks in the country [the other existing one is in Chennai, and more will surely follow,” he says. “We plan to develop a Formula India version of the Moto3 bike, which at least to begin with will be built in Italy, but in due course also a race replica streetbike, to be built in Pune.”

Harley-Davidson boosts Indian operations HARLEY_DAVIDSON has targeted India as one of its key growth export markets, and besides its recently announced plans to commence assembly of two of its Sportster models at a new purpose-built factory outside Delhi fro CKD/complete knockeddown kits produced in its US plants, reliable sources in India as well as in Italy insist that the Motor Company is developing an all-new sub-800cc V-twin platform (thought in fact to be 750cc) for a range of models to be manufactured in India, most likely employing engines supplied by Milwaukee, assembled by an Indian workforce into cycle parts sourced in India. This will enable Harley to follow the strategy adopted by KTM in developing the 125 Duke in conjunction with partner Bajaj, which in building the bike at its Pune plant is offering European quality at Asian prices to KTM’s worldwide dealer network. This would enable Harley not only to circumvent the ban on imports of bikes under 800cc to the world’s second largest motorcycle market, but also provide its US dealers with the affordable entry-level product they’ve been asking for ever since Harley management shut down Buell in October 2009, depriving them of the Buell Blast single which formerly served that purpose. Such a model is likely to be a hit in other countries, too. The booming Indian motorcycle market’s massive potential has attracted the interest of several Western manufacturers, as the country’s middle class expands in size and prosperity. The import of CBU/complete built up motorcycles was formerly banned as a protective measure for the local industry, but under pressure from Harley-Davidson

H-D CEO Matt Levatich: "This investment will allow us to improve our market responsiveness and production flexibility”

The Iron 883 is one or two entry level Harley models on sale in India

the US government dropped its ban on the import of mango fruit grown in India, in return for which its Indian counterpart partially raised the barrier on motorcycle imports. Yes, really! This fruit-for-bikes tradeoff means that since December 2007 so-called Superbikes can be imported into India that were completely manufactured in Milwaukee, or Bologna, or Japan, but only if they have an engine bigger than 800cc and are Euro3 compliant, in return for which they can bypass Indian homologation rules, albeit against an eye-wateringly steep set of import duties and local taxes totalling 103.39%. This is reduced by more than 80% if the motorcycle is assembled in India from CKD/complete knockeddown kits, even if these were entirely manufactured abroad although even in that case the 800cc barrier remains. Only if a motorcycle built and sold in India has a demonstrable majority of home-sourced components to qualify as a locally-built product, can it measure less than 800cc in capacity. Yamaha was first off the mark to address this new opportunity, bringing in shipments of the R1 and MT-01 that same month, before being joined by its three Japanese rivals, and Ducati, with Aprilia arriving this year. Almost 1,000 over-800cc bikes were sold in India in the April 2009-March

2010 fiscal year - a tiny drop in a home market where more than 10 million bikes and scooters were sold in the same period, although it’s expected this will rise by 20% for the current year ending in March. But with the Indian economy growing at over 8% annually, and 50% of the country’s 1.2 billion population below 35 years of age, there’s a huge potential customer audience in a country where motorcycles are a significant part of the social fabric. Almost inevitably, given the cool image attached to the brand, owning a Harley-Davidson is the dream of millions of Indians, and the Motor Company’s Milwaukee management has responded to this opportunity in decisive fashion, establishing HarleyDavidson India as a wholly-owned subsidiary in August 2009, with the first of its five Indian dealerships so far opening in July 2010, with three more planned for 2011. Harley currently offers 12 models in its Indian market line-up, and sold about 220 bikes there in the second six months of 2010, all of them subject to those hefty import duties. That means that Harley's entry-level model, its Sportster SuperLow 883, costs 550,000 rupees or the equivalent of about $12,000, almost double its US-market price tag in a country where the average per

capita income is about $1,000 a year, according to the World Bank. Harley management has already taken steps to address this problem, by constructing its own factory at Bawal, a small town in Haryana state about 100km/60mi southwest of Delhi. This 70,000sq.ft facility will initially be used for the assembly of just two models from CKD component kits supplied by its US plants - the SuperLow and Iron 883 Sportsters, as the most price-sensitive in the Hog India lineup. India will become the second country in which Harley-Davidson has CKD assembly operations outside the U.S., after Brazil where the Motor Company opened a factory in 1999. Production in India will begin very shortly, with the plant fully operational by June. "CKD assembly operations in India are a natural next step for HarleyDavidson as we build our brand presence around the world," said Harley-Davidson Motor Company President & CEO Matt Levatich. "This investment will allow us to improve our market responsiveness and production flexibility while reducing the tariff burden, which we expect will drive growth by making our bikes more accessible to India’s consumers.” H-D India’s ten other models will continue to be imported as CBU fully built-up products for the time being, but given the substantial floor area of the Haryana factory, it’s inevitable that other models will be assembled there in due course, spreading the tax saving benefits further at the point of sale. For Harley-Davidson’s investment in its assembly operation at Haryana has been described as “a part of the tens of millions of dollars [of investment] that we are making in India,” by Rod Copes, the Motor Company’s Senior VP of International Sales, Marketing and Business Development, who has also been reported as confirming that Harley would consider manufacturing motorcycles in countries other than the USA for those markets, as a step beyond assembling imported parts into completed bikes. “But it would take a while before we got to the volume and understanding of >>>

what it would take to do that,” Copes is reported as saying. “We are going to grow faster internationally, though.” Unconfirmed sources in Europe and India insist that HarleyDavidson is already taking steps to prepare for that moment, by developing an all-new 750cc V-twin platform for a range of models to be built from the ground up in India. The surprise is that, to do this, it’s understood that while development of this bike’s all-new engine and transmission package is being carried out in Milwaukee, the overall design and styling including the chassis - has been entrusted to an outside source, Engines Engineering in Bologna, Italy, rather than to Harley’s own Product R&D operation in Milwaukee, and especially not the styling department headed up by the legendary Willie G. Davidson. Engines Engineering is a wholly owned R&D subsidiary of Indian conglomerate Mahindra’s Two Wheeler division [see previous article], and if it is indeed true that it’s been chosen to develop an entry-level product for HarleyDavidson, it must certainly be because of its experience of working for an Indian owner in designing products for that company’s home market. However, given that it’s understood that the sub-800cc models to be built in India in Harley’s own factory - and a 70,000sq.ft facility seems excessively large for a mere assembly operation turning a few hundred or even a few thousand CKD kits into complete motorcycles each year - will be sent to Harley dealers around the world as entry-level products (just like the Bajaj-built KTM 125 Duke), Milwaukee management must have great confidence in EE boss Alberto Strazzari’s ability to come up with the goods. No date has been revealed when production of the Indian-built Harleys may commence, though it’s unlikely to be earlier than the 2013 model year. But in addressing the huge untapped potential in the Indian market represented by the gap between the domestic 220 cc machines and the 800cc-plus imported bikes, Harley-Davidson is likely to come up trumps, with its Indian operation making a significant contribution to a positive turnaround for the Motor Company’s balance sheet.

Ducati Diavel launch test: Sympathy for the Devil OW to enter the American cruiser market? That’s a conundrum that’s puzzled Ducati’s management for more than four decades, ever since the Italian sportbike manufacturer’s failed attempt back in 1963 to produce a Harley-style cruiser aimed at American customers via the abortive 1260cc V4 Apollo prototype, which produced more power and especially torque than the road tyres of the day could handle. How does a company with an unparalleled recent history of success in World Superbike and MotoGP racing, grab a foothold in the biggest single segment of the largest motorcycle market in the Western world, while still staying true to its sporting heritage and competition credentials? At the stage that 48% of all the 357,691 streetbikes sold in the USA in 2010 were cruisers, that’s too big a number for even the world’s most illustrious sportbike brand to ignore especially as the concept has been successfully exported around the world. Hence the reason why Ducati has gone over to the Dark Side in the eyes of many dedicated ducatisti, and produced the Diavel powercruiser, which means ‘Devil’ in the distinctive Bolognese dialect. For, almost half a century on from the Apollo, Ducati’s 15strong Diavel development team led by Giulio Malagoli have solved that riddle by creating the radical new model launched at the Milan Show last November, and now in dealer showrooms around the world, complete with low 770mm/30.3in seat, a stretched 1590mm/62.6in wheelbase, and a fat 240-section rear tyre, all straight out of any cruiser catalogue. Yet the accusation by many before they’ve even sat on it that in building the Diavel, Ducati has betrayed its performance bike brand values, is dispelled within the first five minutes you spend aboard this extremely different-looking, totally unique-riding, high-performance Supercruiser that’s indeed a kind of Custom-class Superbike from the 13-time SBK World champions. Nobody else could have done this, and nobody probably ever will. It’s a true Ducati - just not one of a kind we’ve ever seen before. The stock Diavel carries a E16,990 price tag in Italy scaling in at 210kg (E3,000 less but three kilos more than

H

the Diavel Carbon in either all-black or red-themed versions, complete with carbon fibre bodywork and specially machined, contrast cut, forged Marchesini wheels), while producing 127.5Nm of torque from the 1198cc desmo V-twin motor, an adapted version of the same engine as in last year’s factory Superbikes, that results in a torque-toweight ratio of 1.65:1. Compare this to the 115Nm/292kg equivalent-capacity and only slightly more expensive V-Rod Muscle Harley’s 2.54:1 ratio, or the more torquey but also 500cc bigger and especially hugely heavier and 40% more costly 166.8Nm/290kg Yamaha V-Max’s 1.74:1, and you can understand how Ducati claims the Diavel will accelerate from zero to 100kph/62mph in 2.6 secs. - faster than its own 1198R Superbike, making it almost for sure the fastest accelerating volume production motorcycle in the world today. And I soon found when trying to emulate that time off any set of traffic lights along Spain’s southern Costa del Sol coastline at Ducati’s sun-kissed press launch, that the Diavel’s light-action oil-bath slipper clutch delivers a smooth takeoff, aided by that stretched wheelbase and balanced 50/50 weight bias which combine to counter the front wheel lifting as the wide, specially-developed 240/45-17 Pirelli Diablo Rosso II on its fat 8.0in rim rear tyre digs in and drives on everyday asphalt, as you leave high-performance supercars trailing in your wake, let alone anything with half their number of wheels. But don’t get the idea the Diavel is strictly a straight-line package, which is reluctant to change direction anytime soon, like most American powercruisers fitted with raked-out steering geometry and that design statement of a rear tyre, which then if you insist on cranking them over in a turn, suddenly fall on their side into the apex as you reach the shoulder of the flat-profile rear rubber, not aided by what’s usually an extremely narrow-section front tyre. This is a Ducati, after all, so not only does it pick up speed fast, but Malagoli’s men took it for granted that it should also handle well in turns with an élan that’s unmatched by anything else in the cruiser category. Yet,starting from a clean computer screen three years ago, Bartholomeus Janssen Groesbeek - better known as Bart, the Dutch creator of the current Monster family, and Ducati’s senior in-house designer who joined them in 2002 from Yamaha’s creative division GK Design, which of course created the V-Max - has endowed the Diavel with uniquely muscular styling in keeping with the powercruiser theme. US fusion custom specialist Roland Sands acted as a consultant on the Diavel project, after being commissioned by Ducati North America three years ago to create his own take on how a desmo V-twin Custom should look, via his acclaimed Ultramotard. In spite of the low seat height, the Diavel isn’t a feetforward motorcycle, though - the compact riding position is more Monster than Hog - with a maximum 41º designed-in lean angle round a 75mph/110kph turn, and Pirelli’s rounded MotoGP-type profile giving great grip as you hustle the Ducati along the highway that local Spanish streetracers call El Camino del Cielo - the road to the sky. I’ve waited twelve years since this fabulous switchback stretch of tarmac was carved out of the side of a mountain to link Marbella on the coast with Ronda up high, to ride a bike like the Diavel

CATHCART REPORT along it, climbing from sea level to more than 1000m/3200ft in elevation in just 48km/30miles via a series of sweeping curves interspersed with the occasional hairpin. After doing so, I’m convinced that no other motorcycle would have got me up or down the side of the mountain so fast, and with so much satisfaction. That’s partly due to the Diavel employing the same revamped version of Ducati’s liquid-cooled 1198cc Testastretta Evoluzione eight-valve Superbike motor as fitted to the bestselling Multistrada introduced a year ago, with service intervals extended to 15,000 miles/24,000km. That’s been retuned via revised cylinder head porting combined with radical adjustment of the cam timing, for that extra big 127.5Nm hit of torque peaking at 8000 revs, and now delivers an extra 12 bhp, thanks to a larger airbox and revised exhaust system, with 162 bhp on tap at 9500 rpm. As on the Multistrada, the desmo Vtwin’s versatility has been expanded still further via a comparable array of electronic rider aids, with eightposition DTC/Ducati Traction Control, and a choice of three different electronic riding modes accessible via the indicator cancellation switch on the left handlebar, against the Multistrada’s four. Sport delivers the full 162bhp, but with a sharper response to the ride-by-wire throttle map, and a level three default position for the DTC (which you’re free to override anytime, with level eight giving most intervention, and level one the least).Touring again offers 162bhp but a smoother, more progressive delivery, and level four DTC, while Urban has just 100bhp on tap, and level five DTC. Malagoli’s men have left in just enough engine braking still dialled in via the slipper clutch settings to aid the Brembo brake package slow the bike from speed. This fabulous setup is worthy of a Superbike, with twin 320mm floating front discs gripped by Monobloc radial calipers, but the added reassurance of Bosch ABS as standard front and rear, means that however hard you squeeze, and even if you also use the large 265mm rear disc with twin-pot caliper hard, as is customary among the cruiser cult, you won’t lock anything up. Add in that long wheelbase and the low seat, and the result was great stability even stopping the Diavel from upwards of 120kph/75mph into a downhill hairpin returning to the coast from Ronda. It’s also a new benchmark for cruiser-class handling, and that’s in spite of steering geometry that’s rangier than on anything yet to leave the Bologna assembly lines. This would actually make what was

“This is a motorcycle that’s completely unlike anything that’s been made before, and you gotta try it to believe it.”

designed as a powercruiser into quite a handy weekend tourer, especially with the easy-access 18-click remote preload adjustment for the fully adjustable Sachs rear shock complete with progressive-rate link, whose horizontal location makes the low seat height possible, without sacrificing any of the 120mm of rear wheel travel. Much more desirable is the full streetlegal Termignoni carbon-can exhaust system, which is true eye candy even without altering performance much, while a necessity for taller riders will be the Roadster seat giving 20mm more legroom, a Euro 250 option that really should be free at the point of sale, since otherwise the riding position is non-adjustable. I’m 5’11”/1.83m tall, and the low stock seat height meant my legs got pretty cramped during a day spent wedged in place aboard a bike you sit very much within rather than on, and I couldn’t move my legs enough to stick my toes on the footrests, hence the destruction of a pair of Kushitani-san’s toe sliders cranking the Diavel on its side through the fast sweepers en route to Ronda. But that’s not an issue when you select Urban riding mode for a spot of chilled out boulevarding aboard the Diavel to your local café or club, which is a bit like driving your Porsche Cayenne Turbo to the country club. If you have one. I couldn’t envisage using the Urban mode anywhere else except plonking round town at low speeds or in the rain - since engine performance is really minimised, and the TC too invasive. It’s as if Ducati replaced the Diavel’s Testastretta Superbike motor with an air-cooled 1100 desmodue lump out of the Hypermotard! But the devil is in the detail on the Diavel, and not only in terms of the literally awesome performance package it delivers, but also the optimum fit and finish of the whole bike, including its numerous design

touches which prospective owners will relish. Like the clever fold-out passenger footrests and retractable grab handle behind the seat, which except in use don’t spoil The Look. Or the brushed aluminium radiator shrouds, cast aluminium mirrors (which don’t vibrate and are very effective), steel 17-litre fuel tank, etc. - Ducati is justly proud that what you see is what you get in terms of materials, and there are almost no plastic parts. Or the LED running lights set horizontally across the single headlamp, matched by the incredibly bright LED turn signals and tail-lights which are practically invisible when not illuminated. Or the sodistinctive single-sided aluminium licence-plate mount with integrated LED which doubles as a rear mudguard, while matching the cast aluminium single-sided swingarm it’s mounted to. Or the trademark trellis frame made from large diameter steel tubing with two lateral die-cast aluminium sections that flow into the rear techno-polymer subframe; Brembo’s new integral brake and clutch master-cylinders custom designed for the Diavel complete with milled reservoir tops; the weapon-like

trigger-catch that slides down to cover the starter button when activating the kill-switch; the keyless Harley-type electronic security system actuated by a remote sender you keep in your pocket, which communicates with the bike within a distance of two metres and also, after parking up, you can actuate an electronic lock on the steering simply by applying full steering lock, and pressing the ignition-off button a second time. The list goes on and on, for Ducati has made sure that what for the company is very much a flagship model in a new segment for it, while showcasing the latest technology is also tailored to entice the older, more affluent customers in the premium cruiser sector, without at the same time straying too far away from its traditional sportbike clientele. It’s a difficult trick to pull off, but after riding the Diavel nobody will be able to say Ducati didn’t give it their best shot. And Ducati dealers absolutely need to ensure they have a Diavel test bike available to get the message over. This is a motorcycle that’s completely unlike anything that’s been made before, and you gotta try it to believe it.

HE industry-only JPMS motorcycle, scooter and quad show in Lyon, on February 6 and 7, attracted 9,183 visitors according to the organisers, as well as 211 journalists from all over the world. There were a total of 212 exhibitors representing 950 brands. These figures for the ninth annual event in 2011 compare with 9,072 visitors, 750 brands and 220 stands in 2010, which itself saw a 12.5% increase in visitors on 2009.This is an impressive performance at a time when the European motorcycle industry faces continuing retrenchment and uncertainty, and confirms the ever-increasing importance of the French market and the show itself in the international industry’s calendar. New registrations fell by only 7% in France last year, far less than in most other Western European countries, and market sentiment at the show was noticeably more positive than at recent shows in Italy, Germany and the UK. “JPMS enables exhibitors not just to improve visibility and image,” said chief organiser Stéphane Clair. “It is also a place where they do really good business in a 100% industry environment, which for many is the main attraction.” The exhibitor base is also changing, with the 2011 event seeing more OEMs than usual, eager to introduce their products, meet existing dealers and recruit new ones. BMW, KTM, Betamotor and Norton were all present for the first time, alongside distributors of a range of new scooters, quads and custom bikes such as Headbanger Motorcycles. An increasingly important component of these shows is the electric scooter sector, and JPMS was no exception here with a whole section devoted to these, including several never before seen in France, with 200 visitors able to test-ride some of these on an indoor track.

The organisers say that one trend was the return of colour in both apparel and accessories, with black and grey less in evidence than in the immediate past, replaced by blue pastels, flashy greens, bright reds and all sorts of loud graphic combinations. Also in evidence was the continued popularity of classic styles in boots, jackets, gloves, helmets and even motorcycles and scooters. As last year, a highlight of the show was the presentation of JPMS Products of the Year, with eight products elected by the jury from a list of more than 150. Winners were: Safety – Bering wireless airbag gilet (which also won the attendeeawarded Product of the Year award) Green – Codever off-road and green sports organisation Innovation – Technoglobe Easy Clean workshop roller Women – Helston’s Celia leather jacket Urban – Lazer Monaco lightweight flip-up helmet Sports – Gaerne GP1 racing boot Off-Road – Airoh Aviator lightweight MX helmet Professional – Go 2 Rent motorcycle rentals

SM Pro Platinum rims for MX

R&G Racing Speed Triple protection

TCP parts for FZ8 and Fazer8

R&G RACING has released a range of 13 protection and styling products for the updated 2011 Triumph Speed Triple. Aero Crash Protectors are available in two separate fitments behind the radiator and below the centre of the frame spars. For the exposed 1050cc engine, R&G offers easyfit and hard-wearing engine case covers that bolt on top of the standard cases and engine case sliders and attaching to the bottom of the existing cases without adversely affecting ground clearance. Stone and debris protection is offered by the aluminium radiator guard, oil cooler guard and Shocktube, which encloses the rear shock, as well as fork protectors. Spindle Sliders protect the suspension, swingarm and braking components, while exhaust protectors cover the underseat cans and Bar End Sliders help to

protect the levers and tank. The R&G Tail Tidy, crafted from aluminium and black powder coated, replaces the standard numberplate hanger and light to create a much sharper appearance at the rear, and Frame Plugs protect and cover the holes where the swingarm is mounted.

TCP AERODYNAMICS has added these TĂœV homologated parts to its wide range of products for Yamaha models. The hugger fits both FZ8 and Fazer8 with or without ABS, the lower fairing is for the Fazer8 and there are also FZ8 radiator panels. CTEK XS 0.8 battery charger CTEK’s XS 0.8 is a new patented 0.8A 12V battery charger with a six-stage charging process. Features to note include an extended five pulse per second desulphation stage to fully restore battery capacity, analysis stage to quickly identify whether the battery is capable of holding a charge or whether the battery needs replacing,10-day float ensuring maximum charge level for in season usage with patented pulse maintenance to maximise battery life during extended storage, and a practical and easy to understand display which allows the complete charging process to be followed. The XS 0.8 can revive batteries from as low as 2v. CTEK says it is ideal for motorcycle batteries, which, due to their seasonal and sometimes irregular usage, are particularly

prone to self discharge. Multiple ‘parasitic loads’ such as alarms or tracking devices can further drain the battery, making effective battery protection and maintenance essential. The unique multistage charging characteristics of the XS 0.8 ensure that any battery will be charged to its maximum potential without risk of drying out or damaging the battery, according to the company.

Touratech Compañero four-season touring suit TOURATECH founder Herbert Schwarz, who has been riding motorcycles all over the planet for more than thirty years, has been following the evolution of textile riding apparel with interest for a number of years. With his active participation, the company has now developed the Compañero, a touring suit that it says marks a new chapter in the evolution of textile motorcycling clothing. The innovative Compañero combines the benefits of a sporty summer suit with the comfort of an outer weatherproof membrane. Touratech teamed up with Bavarian motorcycle apparel manufacturer Stadler to develop the new suit, with requirements jointly defined. A major condition was that it would allow maximum ventilation for physical

exertion at high temperatures. On the other hand, it needed to be completely wind and waterproof in adverse conditions with excellent passive safety. The centrepiece of the Compañero is an airy summer suit. ensure air flow over a wide area, and the most vulnerable areas are reinforced with a layer of Cordura 2000. Fully equipped with CEapproved protectors, it also has large reflective panels and a zip to link jacket and trousers. There are two large outer pockets on the front, mobile phone pocket on the upper arm, several capacious inner pockets and a detachable back pocket which carries the laminate jacket. The wind and waterproof laminate suit is the second layer of the Compañero, and is used in colder weather or rain. Touratech has used a fully breathable Pro Shell three-layer laminate from W. L. Gore for this garment, which has an inner lining, climate membrane and tough outer layer bonded into one fabric. This means it is not too bulky, doesn’t bulge, and always fits snugly, according to Touratech. Unlike some other touring suits where the waterproof membrane is on the inside and the outer layers subsequently soak up water, there is no waterlogging problem and the summer suit keeps an air cushion inside that acts as a thermal lining. An additional insulating layer such as fleece underwear is only needed in extremely cold weather. In wintry conditions, a storm collar comes into its own, and the jacket and trousers of the membrane suit can also be zipped together. Also, ventilation panels under the arms and closable

Forma Ice boot

CLOSE collaboration between Forma technicians and the brand’s riders on the International Superbike and Endurance circuits led to the development of the new Ice boot. Forma says the end result is a real mix of innovation and technology. Ice features Forma’s exclusive Flex Control System, providing excellent flex and avoiding unnatural ankle movements. The new replaceable reinforced plastic heel cup in nylon fibre offers high levels of impact and slide protection, and the internal reinforcements in polyurethane, the injection moulded plastic shaped protections and the plastics on the upper, gear change, ankle and toe complete the protective

aspects of the boot. The upper is in microfibre and features Air Mesh lining, while the stainless steel metallic finish vented slider is extremely lightweight, highly resistant and easily interchangeable. The new Air Intake System also encourages rapid air circulation and disposal, according to Forma. The boot features a zip and velcro closure while fit can be further personalised by the rear pump ratchet closure in addition to the lightly elasticised one-time snap front fastening strap. Other features include nylon midsole in TPU, double-density antislip and anti-oil rubber sole and an anti-bacterial replaceable footbed. Swedish apparel manufacturer Jofama has been growing solidly across Northern Europe in recent years. IDN spoke to International Sales Manager Anders Gunnarsson and UK Sales Manager John Lagerway at the INTERMOT expo in Cologne last year, and corresponded with the head of motorcycle apparel operations at the company, Peter Eriksson, to find out how it is consolidating its position on existing markets and preparing the ground for future expansion

e u q i n u g n i h t Some … d d o t i b e l t t and a li

Interviews and words by Al Franck - al@dealer-world.com OFAMA was founded in 1926 by Niss Oskar Jonsson, and was initially called JOFA, an abbreviated form of Jonssons Factories. In 1973, the company, which made both sport equipment and leather garments, was separated into two entities. Volvo bought the sport division and kept the name JOFA, which is still a worldwide brand for hockey and other sports equipment. Mr Jonsson kept the leather apparel division and re-named it JOFAMA (Jonssons Factories Malung), and sold it on to the current owners in 1989, Fredrik Mellgren, Jan Elfstrom and Peter Eriksson, now respectively President, head of Fashion and head of Motorcycle and Snowmobile operations at the company. Halvarssons started as a producer of leather goods in 1946, initially with the Swedish army as the main customer. In the 1970s the company started to make products for the motorcycle market, and Jofama acquired it in 1989. Lindstrands was established in 1891 as a local manufacturer of shoes, and branched out into motorcycle boots in the 1970s. A decade later it was also producing MX and Enduro products, and the brand was acquired in 1996. Jofama’s head office is located in Malung, a town located 350 km north west of Stockholm, which has been a centre of the Swedish leather industry for several centuries. Some 25 staff are employed there, with three others at its Norwegian office in Kongsvinger.

Other than these, Jofama has 20 sales representatives and showrooms in a number of Northern European countries. The subsidiary in the UK, for example, has two sales representatives for the motorcycling sector and one for fashion. “We produce mid to mid-high price technological multi-weather clothing, and have licences for much of the technical fabric and advanced technology that go into our apparel and accessories,” says Gunnarson. “Our main difference is that we offer clothing that will handle big extremes in climate. In Sweden in Spring it can be –5 in the morning and +20 at lunchtime, and you need something special to cope with this.” n terms of brand positioning, Jofama is the motorcycle entry level product line and the fashion brand, while the Halvarssons range covers the most technical clothing, as well as the company’s classic black leather and snowmobile apparel ranges. Lindstrands has the most aggressive designs, and covers the sportier, off-road, and adventure end of the market. “Other off-road clothing producers tend to go for simplicity,” says Lagerway. “Not us – Lindstrands has plenty of the latest technology options for the off-road sector.” Jofama claims to be one of Scandinavia’s largest and oldest manufacturers of leather apparel. All design and development work is carried out at the HQ in Malung where the company has three full-time designers, with outside designers called in from time to time to collaborate on given projects There is also a 1,500 sq.m. warehouse at Malung from where the company supplies goods to all its dealers across Europe. company’s secure online system before 12.00 are delivered the next day, and in the rest of Europe between two and four days. Annual turnover is approximately E15 million. ofama products are sold in Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Italy, Spain, Ireland and Belgium, and the motorcycle department has a long history of producing hi-tech garments for the Swedish, Norwegian, British and Czech police and military. “We supply a wide range of products and cover a large area of needs,” says Eriksson. “We do good numbers of gloves, classic leather does well and we are seeing an increase in sales of our off-road-oriented products. Not just for the classic off-road, muddy stuff, but also for those off-road styles used on Tarmac.” According to Eriksson, one of the company’s main strengths is its long tradition of producing fullycertified products.“We launched our first CE-approved (Cambridge standard) leather product in 1997 and the first CE- approved textile product in 2000. In 2006 we launched our Safety textile jacket and pants, which were developed together with certain UK police forces to fulfill their requirements for protective apparel. This was the first commercial textile product to reach EN13595 Level 2. After testing lots of existing fabrics on the market we came up with our own HI-ART textile, which enabled us to reach the performance levels stipulated by the standard.” This fabric is now used in all Jofama’s textile and leather products, usually to reinforce exposed areas to give a significant increase in abrasion performance.

By staying close to the market we pick up ideas on how to improve our products and service “We are bringing our long experience of producing certified products into our normal products while selecting the best combinations of materials and stitching designs. Our main focus is to make our products as protective as possible for each price level.” or Jofama, quality of product is the ultimate goal. The company philosophy is that every detail matters: every material, every seam in every item. Everything is chosen with care and is included for a reason. “We use test riders and we ride ourselves,” says Eriksson. “This means we know what the right feel, fit and look should be.A more scientific approach is taken when it comes to the vital quality and safety tests, which are performed by our suppliers and by independent accredited test institutes.” He says the company’s efforts to produce safetytested clothing and equipment have taken Jofama to the forefront in terms of motorcycle safety and CE marking, which is confirmed by the fact that both the British police and military and the Czech police have recently chosen to use the company’s products.

F

“We have also been involved in developing some of the materials and manufacturing techniques used in our clothing,” says Eriksson. “Quite simply, we were dissatisfied with what was available on the market. With over one hundred years’ experience, our craftsmanship is beyond compare and we have very firm opinions about what we want and what is required.” ofama, Halvarssons and Lindstrands apparel uses a number of advanced fabrics and technologies to climate-proof and protect the rider. Dryway and Dryway+ technical membranes use differences in temperature and moisture on the inside and outside of the membrane to remain breathable in the harshest and wettest conditions.Heat on the inside is released as moisture, but moisture on the outside is prevented from penetrating the fabric. HI-ART, the company’s in-house-developed High Abrasion Resistant Textile was developed for use in exposed areas on garments, giving an increase in frictional resistance of over 500% for textiles and 200% for leather.

Lindstrands Arrox

Outlast is a hightech material that evens out differences in temperature, originally developed to protect astronauts from extreme variations in temperature. It works by regulating the temperature of the air next to the body by absorbing, storing and distributing heat to cooler areas. When the clothes are warm and the temperature drops and gets cool, the stored heat ensures that the fabric stays warm, and vice versa. TFL Cool System is a revolutionary innovation which allows black leather or textiles to absorb no more heat than a light-coloured material. This is due to a treatment performed during tanning and dyeing that prevents the material from absorbing high energy light, reflecting up to 80% of this heat radiation and giving a temperature reduction in the surface material of up to 20°C. The Triple Stitch system has been developed after many thousands of hours of research and development to ensure maximum impact resistance, with three seams suitably spaced, and sturdy and durable thread >>> used for stitching it all together. Jofama also uses the innovative C-Change nanotech functional membrane developed by Schoeller. When the weather is warm and moisture levels inside the clothing rise, the polymers in the membrane open, allowing moisture and heat to escape. From the outside, the clothing is still windproof and waterproof. When the level of activity drops, reducing the amount of heat and moisture produced, the membrane closes again. Heat is thus retained next to the body. NanoSphere treatment mimics the irregular surface of a plant’s leaves ensuring that drops of water and dirt particles, which are significantly larger by comparison to the surface structure, are unable to make sufficient contact with the material and so ‘run off’. This keeps clothes much cleaner and drier. inally, Mc-FIT maximum comfort fit patented technology is based on the liner, membrane and outer shell being laminated together giving a more flexible glove and a better feel. “We introduced McFIT technology into our gloves for the 2011 season,” says Eriksson. This is a new technology developed to secure the membrane to the glove. The use of the technology also gives a more precise fit where you hardly feel you are using a membrane glove.” The joint use of these advanced systems and fabrics

makes the company’s apparel particularly technologically advanced for the price range, and is a key USP in attracting new dealers on board. Jofama is the largest motorcycle apparel supplier on the Swedish and Norwegian markets, with a 3035% share of both, according to Gunnarsson. The third largest market is the UK where there are currently 38 outlets, with 60 the eventual target, says Lagerway. “We’ll get there slowly by only accepting the right dealers. Quality and location are key, and they must have the right attitude to selling clothing - some dealers have the stuff on the wall but don’t take it seriously. We are quite choosy about who we appoint and ask that they take a good level of stock so the customer has a wide choice in front of him or her.” Gunnarsson concurs.“What we have found out (left) rs Gunnarsson over the years in Sweden and elsewhere is that Manager Ande RMOT 2010 TE IN at ay rnational Sales te rw In ge when the potential customer goes into the shop, if anager John La and UK Sales M he has the right size and colour straight away he will buy. closely together and pick up trends and new developments from other sectors and then incorporate them into the motorcycle or snowmobile ranges. This could be colours, effects, details or cutting lines. Advanced materials and nanotechnology will play an increasing role in the future, and will come to be seen as a vital element in ensuring riders’ safety, says Eriksson. “We call it ‘passive safety’. A rider who feels comfortable and is wearing good quality clothes is much more likely to be alert than one who is sweating or shivering. We are all aware of the impact the force of the weather can have on us, particularly up here in Scandinavia.A warm, sunny day can quickly turn chilly with torrential rain. And vice versa. That’s the reality we live with and the reason behind the clothes we develop. These are designed to keep you feeling great, riding

“Trends are different depending on the individual market and what kind of motorcycle types are selling,” says Eriksson. “Jeans has been a top selling item on the Scandinavian market for a while and we are seeing more off-road/adventure products generally, mainly due to BMW’s success with the GS series. There is also a retro trend coming up in some sectors that we think will grow.” So Jofama’s success is built on several strands – technical expertise, practicality, advanced design and a well-developed market awareness. But most of all, the company tries to stay close to its dealers. “Our staff take good care of dealers - they realise that it is the dealer who sells our products and who ultimately feeds us and or families! Without a healthy and happy relationship with our dealers, there wouldn’t be any business for us. “And our business partners and dealers seem to like our way of working and acting. We try to give as good a service as possible,we are very customer-focused and easy to get hold of, and we give them as much respect as we can. They are investing their money in our products – we never forget this.” “But most importantly,” says Eriksson, “We look forward to the future! We have a strong belief in what we are doing and we are building strong and stable growth. We are not a new company and have solid foundations that offer us good opportunities to develop much further, and also to create new products not yet seen on the market.”

Unit sales fell by 1.5% to 45,500, although overall sales of bikes of over 500cc displacement dropped by almost 18% last year. JTG Jotagas, a new Spanish start-up, is planning to release two bikes in the first half of 2011, one a trials and the other an enduro model. The latter will be a sub-100kg, electric start 250cc machine with programmable engine mapping, and the trials model will be a 300cc machine weighing 65kg, both with engines developed inhouse. Japan's Yamaha plans to build a new motorcycle plant near Jakarta at a cost of ¥10 billion (E88.3 million) to meet growing demand, according to Yamaha Indonesia head Dyonisius Betty. The new factory will produce 300,000 units a year, in addition to the 3.6 million annually made in the group’s three other Indonesian plants. WMD is the new sole UK importer/distributor for Devil exhausts from France, and has launched the brand in the UK under the Devilmoto banner (www.devilmoto.co.uk). They will initially offer the Racing Replica and Sprinter full system ranges.

BMW Motorrad Vice-President Hermann Bohrer

BMW Motorrad Vice-President Hermann Bohrer has confirmed the company will launch two maxiscooters in 2012. The two new scooter models are likely to be based on the Concept C prototype unveiled at the 2010 EICMA show in Milan. At the time, BMW announced it planned to produce two models and Bohrer, speaking at a launch event for the BMW K1600GT in South Africa, confirmed the two scooters will be unveiled at the 2011 EICMA show. BMW also announced at EICMA 2010 it may produce an electric scooter. Bohrer made no mention of this, but BMW recently unveiled a new sub-brand known as “BMW i” for its electric automobiles, while the company’s MINI brand unveiled an electric scooter concept at
