Safety: light-touch vs. heavy-handed CONTENTS HE European Commission has renewed its focus on motorcycling in the last few months, with proposals put forward on the Road Safety Programme, technical inspections and rules for type approval. The Federation of European Motorcyclists’ Associations (FEMA) has already highlighted how the Commission’s approach favours bureaucratisation and an increased financial burden on riders rather than light-touch, evidencebased action to improve safety. The Road Safety Programme initiative, for example, reduces the focus on government action (on safer guardrails, road maintenance and raising the awareness of other road users) to place much of the burden on riders themselves, by for example requiring permanent headlamp use, making ABS mandatory, extending periodic technical inspection and introducing ‘anti-tampering’ measures that would seriously limit the rider’s ability to customise his or her own bike. And behind most of these proposals are lobbyists representing those who stand to benefit financially from these changes. On Periodic Technical Inspections (PTI), for example, the latest FEMA newsletter gives details of a Commission stakeholder workshop at which testing organisations were present in force, always presenting tougher (and more expensive) inspections as the best safety option. An academic working at a German private testing organisation presented a cost-benefit analysis at the workshop that apparently demonstrated the advantages of increased testing, but somehow managed to exclude the cost to the rider of taking a half day off to go to the test centre and paying the increased testing fee. FEMA representatives also asked if there was any hard evidence that more stringent inspections led to fewer accidents. “That's what we assume”, was the answer. In fact, no numbers were shown indicating that the number of accidents caused by technical defects is higher in a country with minimal PTI testing compared to a country where exhaustive PTI standards are in place. An independent study published in an independent scientific journal in 2007 examined the situation in Norway, comparing accident statistics before and after the introduction of more severe PTI for cars. The result: no effect

T

on accidents at all. What about motorcycles? So far there is no evidence that the countries in Europe where motorcycles have mandatory PTIs have better accident figures than the ones (e.g. Finland, France or the Netherlands) which up until now have excluded PTWs from PTIs. And FEMA points out that arguing in favour of PTI because of supposed safety improvements is misleading. Statistics from testing organisations show that the most common technical defect responsible for a PTW accident is related to tyre pressure or tread depth, which would be more effectively dealt with through improved training and awareness, rather than at a biannual inspection. FEMA’s alternative would be a light-touch local technical inspection solution, where instead of imposing a one-sizefits-all testing regime across the whole of the EU derived from the most restrictive national schemes currently in operation, each country has its own solution depending on local conditions. Riders in Malta face a very different situation from riders in Germany, for example, where there are no autobahn speed limits. Further evidence of ‘producer capture’ of the Commission by lobbyists for producer interests at the expense of the rider can be found in proposals to limit dissemination of repair and maintenance information to OEM monopoly outlets, rather than as widely as possible, and by proposals to restrict bike customisation via the so-called ‘anti-tampering’ agenda. In the guise of ensuring that speed limiters on mopeds are left untouched, the proposal to expand the scope of these regulations to larger bikes is seen as a naked bid by the OEMs to grab as large as possible a share of the parts and accessories market from the aftermarket. “No motorcyclist ‘tampers’ with his bike”, says FEMA. “It’s about making improvements and optimising the bike. These senseless suggestions should be called ‘antiimprovement’ regulations.” To keep abreast of FEMA’s efforts to make sense prevail, visit www.fema-online.eu

Forcefield gains Italian distributor

GERM AN REPO RT Stephan Maderner, editor of German motorcycle trade magazine Bike & BUSINESS, takes a look at the main issues currently affecting the industry in his country

Objectivity needed HE German Traffic Minister, Peter Ramsauer, has been vocal in his opposition to the proposed law that would enable 15 year-olds to ride mopeds in Germany. He has some support in the media, with certain broadcasters claiming that in Austria, where youngsters do have access to mopeds, accidents have increased greatly and the law has been a disaster. But this is simply not true. According to official statistics from Austria over the first half of 2010, the accident rate for 15 year-old riders fell by 11%! The only possible conclusion from this is that if youngsters receive thorough training and are properly tested, they are more than capable of riding a moped in a safe and responsible manner. e really need a return to common sense on this issue. Mr. Ramsauer needs to study the Austrian figures closely, and change his position accordingly. With the liberalisation of the licensing laws across the European Union, there is now an excellent opportunity to attract young people into the powered twowheeler market. But for this to happen, we need politicians capable of basic objectivity.

THE International Transport Forum at the OECD has published road death figures for 30 countries showing substantial differences in trends between countries. Motorcycle deaths increased in 14 countries over the last decade, with the largest being Finland (+170%) and Slovenia (+100%), while some countries recorded substantial improvements, led by Portugal (–45%) and Korea (–39%). “This increase is only partly explained by the rise in the number of motorcycles”, said Véronique Feypell de La Beaumelle, road safety expert at the International Transport Forum. “In the UK, for instance, motorcycle accidents were down 23%, despite a 45% increase in the number of motorcycles on the road.” The International Transport Forum has set up a Motorcycle Safety Working Group to assess motorcycling mobility and safety issues. Overall road fatalities in the decade from 2000 to 2009 saw a significant fall. Spain, Portugal and France topped the list for the most pronounced reduction in road fatalities, and the US recorded its lowest death toll in a decade on the roads for more than sixty years. Wisconsin will give HarleyDavidson $25 million in tax credits to preserve jobs at its plants in Milwaukee and Tomahawk. The tax credit package over nine years is linked to jobs and capital investments by Harley and purchases from in-state suppliers. Triumph Motorcycles America is planning to increase its US dealer network from 180+ to 230 over the next four years, according to an article in Powersports Business. LeoVince USA has terminated its relationship with Tucker Rocky and has moved to a dealer-direct model in North America, based around its fast-growing Forza dealer network. The company says the new model offers dealers better product availability, a high level of customer sales and improved after-sales service.

Motorcycle Storehouse offshoot expands metric operations TORQ DISTRIBUTION, the metric sister company of V-Twin parts and accessories specialist Motorcycle Storehouse, is expanding its presence on European markets. Managing Director Iwan Vollebregt told IDN that expansion into Japanese and European bike accessories had been on the cards for a number of years, but the exceptional growth of Storehouse over the last ten years meant it only became a possibility in 2009. “Pressure to cross over into metric came initially from manufacturers, whose positive experience of dealing with Storehouse led them to ask for a dedicated metric service, but also from potential customers who would approach us at shows. “We saw a niche we could fill here, because we have aftermarket manufacturers with extensive lines for metric street, dirt, cruiser and custom applications that were not being welldistributed in Europe.” Torq currently sells around 30 brands including Vance & Hines, Küryakyn, Goodridge, Dynatek and

Battery Tender, and is looking to add another 20 to 30 in the next year. Although now selling parts in all corners of Europe, the initial focus is close to home. “We are working to build up our coverage of Benelux countries at the moment,” says Vollebregt, “but we will branch out across Europe progressively. We can give a full technical service in Dutch, German and English at the moment and so will cover those language markets first, training up staff in French, Italian and other languages at a later date.We will aggressively pursue those markets when we have the right personnel in place.” Torq has a 2,500 sq.m. warehouse in Bedum which is currently being filled, and Vollebregt emphasises that full metric ranges will be available for the brands it represents. “We will not cherry-pick. If we offer a brand we will offer the full range including replacement parts. And these will be available from stock. This is what many distributors claim, but is not usually true.

“This is why in the middle of a recession Storehouse grew by 30% last year. We decided to invest in inventory rather than becoming bean counters and cutting back on stock.” Torq is aiming to replicate Storehouse’s experience in the metric sector, with a greater focus on accessories rather than the consumables that have always been an important part of its V-Twin sector sister’s sales. “There is little added value for Torq in replacement parts”, says Vollebregt. “It’s already a well covered market in Europe, whereas accessories are a big opportunity.” Another USP will be rapid delivery Torq can cover the whole of Europe within 24 hours. “If the order is placed before 16.00, we will deliver the next day over the whole continent. That’s pretty unique,” he concludes. TORQ DISTRIBUTION BV Bedum, NETHERLANDS Tel: +31 (0)50 303 9776 rick@torqdistribution.com www.torqdistribution.com

BMW motorcycle sales up 17% BMW Motorrad delivered 81,508 motorcycles worldwide in the nine months to end September 2010, up 16.9% on the figure for the first three quarters of 2009, despite

difficult trading conditions in many of its markets. This compares with a total of 1,062,216 vehicles delivered by the BMW Group, comprising BMW, MINI and Rolls-Roycebrand automobiles over the first three-quarters, an increase of 13.1% on the same period of the previous year.

Brammo goes global ELECTRIC motorcycle maker Brammo has announced a deal with Singapore electronics manufacturer Flextronics to produce motorcycles and components. Brammo said the partnership will enable it to rapidly ramp up production to meet demand for its products. CEO Craig Bramscher said in a statement: “As Brammo pursues its international growth strategy, it is critical to our success that we continue to build our strong reputation for quality, reliability and serviceability. We can now scale

globally with the demand and the rapid evolution of this growth industry.” It is unclear whether Brammo will continue manufacturing in Ashland, Oregon, under the new deal. Flextronics helps customers design, build, ship and service electronics products at its facilities in 30 countries. It counts Microsoft and Cisco Systems among its clients and has a German automotive plant. Bramscher said the final assembly of the electric bikes will be spread out over the globe. “(Flextronics) will be

Revolutionary hybrid 125cc scooter MAZZIOTTA Motors of France has teamed up with Chinese scooter manufacturer Sampo Motors to develop and build the HMAX-125, a hybrid with a unique capacitor-based electric power-plant which the manufacturers claim gives excellent acceleration and a fuel consumption improvement of between 30 and 40% on a typical 125cc scooter. The French company designs and supplies the hybrid drive train and supercapacitor, which Sampo incorporates into a conventionally engined scooter. Launched at INTERMOT, the HMAX125 is designed for riding around town The hybrid uses a bank of capacitors rather than an electrochemical battery

and short commutes, with an upper speed of 80 kph (50 mph). The hybrid is powered by two motors – an electric motor and an internal combustion engine. It uses these two motors intelligently depending on when each is most efficient - typically the first for starting and acceleration and the second for cruising. The greatest innovation of the scooter is its source of electric energy, which is supplied free by a patented regenerative braking system that overrides the scooter’s disc brakes and switches the electrical motor into generator mode, turning the motor into a powerful mechanical brake, charging a supercapacitor (a very big electrical condenser) rather than a battery. The advantage of the supercapacitor is that it can absorb a very large amount of electrical energy in a fraction of a second, which would be impossible for a conventional electrochemical battery. With multiple regenerative braking, every braking action is transformed into electric energy, with over 75% recovery of the kinetic energy from braking. A further advantage of the supercapacitor is that it can discharge its energy to the electric motor within a few milliseconds for instant and powerful acceleration, equivalent to a 400cc engine,

Mazziotta Motors CEO Daniel Giudice with the HMAX-125 at INTERMOT

and the manufacturer estimates an almost indefinite lifespan of over 500,000 cycles. Unlike other hybrid systems, this one is fully automatic. Control of the scooter is like any other two-wheel vehicle, with an accelerator and two brakes. There is no button to select separate motors and no need to repeatedly plug in the scooter to recharge it. The HMAX-125 hybrid will be marketed in Europe from June/July 2011

and the price in France (including all fees and VAT) is expected to be around ?6,400.The manufacturer estimates that fuel savings will be E2,000-E2,500 over a five year period. Mazziotta Motors is interested in hearing from potential distributors and dealers in all European markets. www.mazziotta-motors.com www.cn-sampo.com

MINI Scooter E-Concept BMW MINI has unveiled an electric scooter concept, conceived by Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design. Branded the MINI Scooter E-Concept, it is powered by an electric motor which can be recharged at any conventional power socket using an on-board charging cable and a smart phone as the ignition key, integrating infotainment,

communication and navigation systems. Distinctive features include the circular central instrument cluster, the iconic speedometer, the visually prominent indicator lamps in the style of the classic Mini and the chrome trims on the bodywork. The concept comes in three separate versions. The first is a two-seater variant with the colour scheme of the current MINI E hatch prototype, the second is a sporty single-seater in British Racing Green with dark brown leather seat, while the third takes inspiration from the 1960s with the distinctive graphics of the Mod era. A snap-in adaptor

for a Smartphone allows the driver to use their mobile device as a route finder, music player or as a phone via a wireless Bluetooth interface from the MINI ‘cockpit’. As soon as the rider docks his mobile phone and switches it on, the vehicle is ready to go. A navigation app enables drivers to know where other MINI E Scooter E- Concept drivers are on the map, similar to social networking systems, to encourage interaction between the MINI E Scooter community. The scooter is driven by a builtin rear wheel electric motor, which is powered by a compact lithium-ion battery. A display screen indicates to the driver the amount of battery life available and the scooter can be charged from any standard AC power outlet via a retractable lead. The study also incorporates an innovative version of the Centre

Rail, first seen in the new MINI Countryman. This unique clip-on mechanism offers a range of options for carrying items, for example a helmet or sunglasses. There is as yet no news from BMW if or when the MINI Scooter E-Concept will enter production.

Marconi joins Gas Gas

ENELLI’S former CEO Pierluigi Marconi (above) has joined Spanish offroad specialist Gas Gas as its Director of Product Development, and has been working full-time since early May at the marque’s Girona factory, 100km north of Barcelona. Gas Gas was founded in 1985 by two former partners in a Bultaco dealership who were then also Spain’s top two Enduro riders, Narcís Casas and Josep Pibernat. Dismayed by the collapse of the historic Spanish marque, they decided to found their own company to replace it, calling it Gas Gas for reasons explained later. Starting firstly with trials bikes, followed in 1989 by Enduro and MX machines, and finally in 2002 by quads, Gas Gas has been a world leader in the Trials sector since Jordi Tarres won three World Trial Championships in succession for the

marque in 1993, 1994 and 1995. More recently, Adam Raga has successfully followed in his tyretracks, winning the Outdoor World Trial Championship twice for Gas Gas in 2005 and 2006, and the Indoor World Championship in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006. The Catalan company has also won four 125/250cc World Enduro titles with Paul Edmonson (twice), Petteri Silvan and Petri Pohjamo. as Gas manufactured 7,500 motorcycles in 2009, and has a good reputation in the off-road world for a high quality, largely hand-built product. All of these were powered by its own engines, predominantly twostrokes except for the four-stroke Enduro motor it began building a decade ago – originally as a 400cc four-valve design, which later grew to 450cc. In addition, for 2010, it launched the new electric-start ECF2504T model powered by Yamaha’s WR250 engine, which also equips the Rieju Marathon model that is in fact built by Gas Gas for their Catalan rivals located in nearby Figueras, 30km away. Gas Gas is now planning its own four-stroke trials engine, a very interesting, low and extremely compact fuel-injected 350cc sidevalve design with batteryless Kokkusan ignition, which was displayed at the EICMA Milan Show last November, and was designed for the Catalan manufacturer by Italian engineer Giovanni Mariani. Gas Gas is aiming to put this new trials fourstroke into production in 2011. However, while developing this side-valve motor will be Marconi’s responsibility in his new job, his main preoccupation is with the company’s two-stroke models.“Two-strokes are a key element in the Gas Gas range, but although we only produce Trials and Enduro models, and have no intention to make a pure road bike, we must pass Euro 3 and the forthcoming Euro 4 noise and emissions requirements with these, so they can be used in a

public environment,” he states. “I am therefore working on a direct injection system to achieve that, which I already had some experience of in my days as chief engineer at Bimota!” arconi is referring to the controversial Bimota Vdue streetbike which first appeared 15 years ago, powered by the company’s own 90° V-twin crankcase reed-valve two-stroke engine, with direct fuel injection developed in-house to meet US emissions requirements, which were then much stricter than European ones. This was Bimota’s only

I completely revamped it with altered mapping, as well as changing the oil system,” states Marconi proudly. “I’ve covered more than 6,000km with it with no problems – now it’s the bike I always intended it to be, and of course I’m incorporating the lessons I’ve learnt with it to the direct injection I’m developing for the Gas Gas twostrokes!” Marconi is a man well capable of thinking outside the envelope of conventional two-wheeled design, and the direct-injection two-strokes and side-valve four-stroke trials bike,

attempt at producing its own motor, which was designed by Marconi and his team, but manufactured for them by Motori Franco Morini in Bologna. 340 examples of this avant-garde but ultimately unsuccessful motorcycle were manufactured by Bimota in 1997, but problems with the fuel injection mapping and engine response ultimately put the company out of business in 1999. A private concern bought most of the unsold Vdues and fitted them with carburettors, which effectively cured all the engine’s problems, as well as making the bike more reliable, with increased performance – at the cost of being unable to be registered for street use.“I bought my own Vdue two years ago, still fitted with fuel injection, and

will be sure to appeal to him as projects to take forward. Expect lots of interesting new models bearing the Gas Gas label in future years, as Marconi – who until now has never produced a dirtbike design – warms to his task. K – I promised: why that funnypeculiar name? The term Gas Gas in Spanish – or Catalan – literally means "gas it up" (i.e. turn the throttle to go faster.) Gas Gas founders Narcís Casas and Josep Pibernat explain that they were passing a bike store in California which had the slogan Accelerate!! Accelerate!! plastered across the window –and they liked it so much they named their new bike company that way. So good, they had to name it twice...

CATHCART REPORT

MFR Ducati Mutant roadtest - Deviant Desmo NTIL recently, the thought of Ducati building a custom cruiser, let alone a chopper, would have been like Ferrari building a minivan. As in, don’t go there, amici. But now the Italian bike firm’s hedge fund management is on the verge of unveiling their Diavel in disguise, a desmo VMax with half as many cylinders complete with styling that Roland Sands or Jesse James would be proud of, so suddenly it’s OK to think of Ducati as a custom bike company. At least, they hope so. Except, their oldest-established South African dealer, the firm which introduced Ducati to the Dark Continent almost 50 years ago, has already gone and done it for them – and, arguably, much more authentically. For the MFR Ducati Mutant powerchopper is an improbable blend of many of Ducati’s trademark design features, including a trellis frame housing an air-cooled 90° V-twin desmo motor, a single-sided swingarm, carbon bodywork and Öhlins suspension, with the raked-out forks and laid-back looks of a bike that Captain America might have approved of riding on from L.A. to Noo'Ahlins in That Movie, with smooth, flowing, typically chopper-like lines, coupled with a massive 300-section rear tyre and two metre-long wheelbase. It’s a deviant desmo. owever, in spite of its extreme appearance, a day spent cruising the High Veldt highways north of Jo’burg in sultry winter sunshine, revealed that the Mutant ticks all the boxes in combining practicality with style, with the undoubted presence delivered by its fat-tyred facelift matched by the punch and performance that Ducati has made its calling card. Here’s how. Ducati commissioned the prototype DB900 cruiser from a US Custom bike

the rpm down for the cruiser style of riding - but I went too far, and the ratio’s too long,” he fesses up. “For production, we’ll go to the next length of belt available from Gates, and up the size of the pulleys accordingly.” In spite of the altitude I was riding it at, the Mutant had satisfying realms of power to put to the pavement, and it certainly lived up to its Superbike stance in chopper country. et, rather improbably, this fattyred custom bike handles surprisingly well, too, thanks to some smart thinking by Dave Frisoli in fitting that improbably fat 200/50-18 Metzeler front rubber to match the even more monstrous 300/35-18 rear. Fitting such a design statement of a back tyre on all other bikes results in some pretty ungainly handling characteristics in turns, since with a narrow front tyre for styling purposes, as soon as you try to crank it over onto the shoulder of the tyre, there’s such a sharp transition going from a flat to a curved shape that it feels momentarily unstable, as if you’re running over ball bearings, before suddenly falling on its side into the turn. “The first criteria was to build a Ducati-styled powercruiser – but the second was, if we’re going to attempt this, it must work like a proper motorcycle, it must handle right, and we must get rid of the bad handling traits of the majority of production cruisers,” says Frisoli. “The tyre size is a styling thing - I always wanted to build a very chunky looking motorbike, and that’s what this is with the 200 front tyre. But the dynamic advantage we gained by using the 200 front tyre was to minimise the offset between front and rear, almost as close as on a normal Ducati Superbike, which has a 120 front and 200 rear, with a 40mm offset either side – on the Mutant we only have 50mm either side, with a 200 front and 300 rear. That’s one of the

builder in 1985 powered by the beveldrive desmo V-twin motor from the Mike Hailwood Replica sportbike, but was dropped when that costly-to-build engine was discontinued, since when Ducati has never seriously focused on the Custom market, where go matters a whole lot more than show. Until now – or rather, until Dave Frisoli first did it for them four years ago. Climbing aboard the Mutant for my cruise into the high country – at 1,753m/5,750ft in altitude, Johannesburg sees around a 20% drop in engine performance compared to sea level – I discovered an improbably comfortable and natural seeming stance compared to most choppers I’ve sampled before, with a plush seat that you have the impression of sitting deep inside of, with footrests that aren’t excessively far forward, thanks to the subframe carrying them that’s clamped to the front of the motor, rather than to the frame – again, for a clean appearance. Without any mirrors fitted, the big,

wide handlebar looks sleek and swoopy. t is ergonomically comfortable as well as dynamically functional and has an excellent gearchange still largely unaffected by the adjustability of the footrests – though at times it was difficult to get my boot under the actual shift lever, which used on the Multistrada to have an eccentrically adjustable toe piece, which they should really put back on. And the Mutant’s turning circle is inevitably huge, with that long wheelbase – not that there’s anything you can do about that, since it goes with the styling! Another criticism is that in converting the final drive from the sixspeed gearbox to Gates toothed belt rather than chain for cleanliness and ease of maintenance, Dave Frisoli has guessed wrong at the overall ratio, so that as it stands, the Mutant is way overgeared, and you need to be doing 150kph before you can select a true top gear without any real trace of transmission snatch. “I initially thought to lengthen the ratios to keep

I

CATHCART REPORT reasons why the bike feels closer to a normal sportbike, unlike many of the others where they only put a big wheel, and your track goes completely haywire the minute it goes off centre.” o that’s why the Mutant doesn’t collapse onto one side when you’re leaning it into a turn, and also why it holds a fine line once you lay it into in the corner, though if you decide to change that line, it’ll do so easily, like a motorcycle should. The steering isn’t exactly heavy, just reassuringly purposeful with that big front tyre, and indeed the only negative thing about the geometry is that the Mutant does push the front wheel thanks to the long wheelbase, and the wide rims – but as against that, it’s perfectly possible to ground the footrests as you hustle the Mutant through turns while trying only moderately hard. But in spite of not being able to grasp the fuel tank between your knees, you do feel in control of the bike at all times, using subtle pressure on the footrests and handlebar to obtain improbably fine handling by cruiser standards, especially through fast sweepers where the Metzeler rubber anchors the Mutant to the ground while delivering unexpected degrees of lean angle to help you hustle it through a turn. The long wheelbase aids stability without making it too hard to carve corners in the twisties, while the compliant

suspension delivers a whole new concept in chopper country, called comfort. The Öhlins shock has good compliance which, coupled with the weight of the bike, helps that fat rear tyre to ride bumps well even on the angle as you crank it from one side to the other with unlikely ease. There’s no steering damper fitted, but you don’t need one with all that rake and trail on such a long wheelbase bike. ainted in the same Marlboroinspired tangerine red livery as the Desmosedici RR, the Mutant comes with a big 30-litre fuel tank made from carbon fibre whose weave is clearly visible in the chequered flag imagery on the top surface of its Monsterderived shape. The big round 8in halogen headlamp comes from

P

Australia, where it’s designed to provide light for rally cars. LED strips in the seat fulfil the requirements for indicators and taillight, and while the carbon single seat is default mode for seating, it can be removed and replaced by a hand-stitched leathercovered dual seat incorporating a backrest, in which case you must delve into the storage space in the tail section to find the leather pouch containing the passenger footrests. These are then slid into capped lugs in the frame, and held in place via a finely executed springloaded mounting system. Neat. That’s also the word you’d use to describe the twin airhorn trumpets mounted in front of the motor, whose jaunty presence not only adds a perky distinction to the Mutant’s looks, they also visually fill in the acres of space between the forward cylinder and the raked out front wheel, and represent a nice piece of improvised design. Oh, and they announce the Mutant’s arrival in, shall we say, a decidedly strident manner….! erhaps the Mutant’s most noteworthy feature, though, is its build quality, for this is an imposing, original, two-wheeled package that’s exquisitely conceived, yet extremely refined in design and manufacture. It’s not just a chopper with a big rear tyre that happens to have a Ducati engine, but a properly thought out, well

engineered bike which positions the desmo brand in a market sector it’s never been in before. “In creating the Mutant, we wanted to stick with the more classic chopper type cruiser genre,” says Dave Frisoli. “What’s impressed me most about it was that I didn’t realise how much fun I’d have riding it. I knew I wanted to build this bike and offer other Ducati or other cruiser riders something different, something that works that’s built around Ducati’s styling and traditions. But, I didn’t realise how much fun the bike would be to ride, especially on longer trips through mountain passes and so on. It’s comfortable on the open road, and on the highway just cruising along, but you can have a lot of fun and play with it through the mountains. It’s an unexpectedly true all-rounder.” Agreed – and the best compliment I can pay Dave Frisoli is that his deviant desmo has the qualities of a factory fresh product, rather than a limited edition hand-built special, even one concocted at dealer level by people who live, breathe and drink Ducatis. It has the added bonus of being full of original thought, so maybe after the Diavel, Ducati should consider making the Deviant….. sorry, Mutant!

Netherlands, Italy, Sweden, Austria and the UK all increased significantly on previous years, according to Kölnmesse. Hendrik von Kuenheim, Head of BMW Motorrad said: "In 2010, INTERMOT Cologne once again fully lived up to its role of being the leading trade fair for the motorcycle and scooter sector. Although times continue to be difficult for the sector, manufacturers can buck the negative trend with innovative and interesting products. Due to the large number of new products, INTERMOT Cologne 2010 was extensively covered in the media and generated considerable interest among the general public. As a result, the sector was also able to make its views known regarding major issues in the area of two-wheeled mobility, with driving licences being one example. That the manufacturers are confronting the challenges of the future was clearly shown at INTERMOT e-motion. The demonstration of the entire range of electric mobility systems enabled

INTERMOT Cologne 2010 to showcase the future of motorised two-wheelers." The new e-motion display assembled more than 120 suppliers in Hall 5.2 and almost 350 brands throughout the fair presented new products and innovations for light electric vehicles (LEVs), escooters and e-motorcycles. Manufacturers of electric vehicles reported encouraging visitor turnout from the first day and also enjoyed extensive media coverage. INTERMOT Cologne also featured the first LEV and electric scooter world championships, which took place at a specially constructed racetrack, and electric mobility was also the topic of various symposiums and conferences, including the LEV Conference in cooperation with ExtraEnergy.org and the e-Congress on electric power for short-range mobility. In addition, INTERMOT Cologne hosted the general meeting of the international LEV Association (LEVA).

Arrow off-road systems THE Off-Road MX Competition product range is the latest MX racing line from Arrow and benefits from the company’s experience with a string of World Titles in MX1 since 1999. The company says the system has a break-through design, components made using CNC-controlled machines, advanced materials, production, welding and highly demanding assembly processes. Off-Road MX Competition exhausts are made in three major parts: header, mid-pipe and silencer. Junctions between these parts are made by CNCmade components to ensure no gas leaks, a perfect coupling thanks to severe control of tolerances, reliability and a long-lasting performance. These subassemblies ensure easy fitment to the bike, better reliability and better handling of stresses and vibration transmitted via the frame to the exhaust, the company says, as well as replacement of a damaged part, rather than the whole system.

Headers and mid-pipes are made in titanium, pipe diameters, sections and section changes are carefully designed to maximise the engine’s performances, with reduced dimensions and weight. The header is fixed to the engine using a bushing (made using numeric controlled machinery and designed to achieve a perfectly smooth gas flow) and a flange made in aluminium alloy. The mid-pipe itself is fixed to the frame via a rigid fixing point, increasing stiffness and stability of the exhaust system. The silencer, made in titanium, ensures smaller dimensions: front and rear end-caps MX Competition

shape is designed to reduce overall length of the silencer itself. Last generation sound-absorbent materials, developed to match Arrow requirements, ensure noise levels meet international racing rules, with limits being lowered every year. The Enduro Alumilite is a special range of mufflers that has been designed for all of the most widespread medium- to high-power four-stroke onroad and off-road models. Made of polished stainless steel using only hand workmanship with template assemblies using manual TIG and MIG welding processes, this line is distinguished by its ellipticalsection body made of electrically anodised aluminium. The end section features an extra silencer cartridge that can easily be removed by loosening the two screws that fasten it to the final curve. This line offers remarkably improved performance at the middle and low rpm ratings, while also making it possible to minimise weight considerably as compared to the original models. The noise levels are especially low, according to Arrow.

Rizoma collaborates with Kawasaki on Z750R THE fruits of close collaboration between Rizoma and Kawasaki on the new Z750R were officially on display on the Rizoma and Kawasaki stands at INTERMOT and will again be shown at EICMA. The two companies worked together for four months enabling Kawasaki to fine-tune the Z750R, while Rizoma’s R&D team developed the bike’s RK.01 styling kit, containing special custom parts with maximum compatibility. Rizoma says that not many aftermarket companies are invited by OEMs to collaborate in this way and the partnership sprang from a recognition of the high quality and added value of the company’s products. One of the most highly visual impact parts is the engine fairing, which mirrors the profile and inclination of the front cowling, thus making the bike even more aggressive looking. The principal material used in the

RK.01 Kit

styling kit is billet aluminium, giving an exceptionally clean overall look. The RK.01 styling kit includes gas cap, front wheel protection, belly pan, Rizoma graphics kit, sprocket cover, injection guard, left engine guard, engine guard, horn kit, rear set control kit, passenger pegs, hole cap and adapter, chain guard and license plate support. Polini air filters for T Max POLINI has designed three new air filters for Yamaha T Max scooters. Two filters are for the intake system: one for the T Max with carburetor produced between 2004 and 2007, and one for the injection model sold starting from 2008. The third Polini air filter is for the variator belt transmission cover. This filter is able to purify the air, increasing the flow in the variator area, which Polini claims substantially improves the cooling of the variator. All the three new Polini air filters are made of a special cotton cloth with long multilayer structure lubricated with a special low viscosity product that improves the air permeability.

New HP Corse Hydroform exhausts for ER-6N HP Corse is now offering its stylish, curvaceous Hydroform exhausts for the Kawasaki ER-6N. As the name suggests, the outer body of the exhaust is hydroformed at high pressure without the need to cut or otherwise weaken the metal in any way. This gives great strength and lightness as the special stainless steel outer can be far thinner than in conventional exhaust systems, and the cone-shaped inner is tapered to optimise the outflow of gases. Hydroform is homologated and comes with a removable dB killer.

Motorex Racing Line MOTOREX Racing Line not only provides special motor and transmission oils, but also brake fluid for the special requirements of the race track. The company says its Racing brake fluid delivers an extremely high boiling point and optimum performance with sensitive brake action, even in fully-fledged sports brake systems, and under the most demanding track conditions. In addition to the fully synthetic 4-stroke oils Racing Pro 4T 0W/40 and Racing Pro 4T 15W/50, used by many racing teams, Motorex has also introduced the semi-synthetic Racing Pro 4T 5W/30. This new racing oil has been specially developed for the brand new KTM 350 SX-F by the Motorex Racing

Lab, in close cooperation with KTM. It uses a special formulation and high-tech additives to overcome the conflicting demands of a wet motocross clutch on the one hand and the lubrication of a highly tuned and very high-revving four-stroke racing engine on the other. For separate gear boxes, as found on 2-stroke engines as well as some high-performance 4-stroke racers, Motorex recommends Racing Gear Oil 10W/40. This special gear box lubricant has been developed by the Racing Lab in cooperation with the Multitech Honda team for the MX1-WC. “But you don’t have to be Antonio Carioli or Hiroshi Aoyama in order to use Motorex Racing Line products“, emphasizes Ronald Kabella, Director Powersports of the Swiss oil refiners. “Any hobby racer will also benefit from the performance of these high-tech lubricants at track days and race training sessions due to the increased engine output and optimised engine reliability on the track.” All Motorex Racing Pro 4T racing oils are sold in

1-litre bottles with integral spouts, as well as in 4-litre and 25-litre cans. MOTOREX Langenthal, SWITZERLAND Tel: +41 (0)62-91975-75 E-mail: info@Motorex.com www.Motorex.com

R&G Racing Shocktube R&G Racing has introduced the Shocktube, an impact resistant, waterproof, vented tube made from 100% bonded Neoprene, double-lined with stretch nylon on both sides, designed to protect rear shock absorbers in all road, track and off-road conditions. The Shocktube works by completely enclosing the rear shock absorber and spring to prevent damage from road salt, water spray, stone chipping, dust and dirt that can have a detrimental effect on the performance and looks of the unit over time.

To cope with this extreme environment and to expel moisture, the Shocktube features six 5mm rustproof eyelets inserted into the Neoprene skin at the top, middle and bottom to dissipate heat from the shock. Quick and simple to fit thanks to heavy-duty Velcro and supplied zip ties, the Shocktube is available for most mono and twin shock machines along with front suspension on BMW GS machines. R&G Racing’s sales director Simon Hughes said: “The rear shock is a pivotal part in the performance of a bike and one that should be taken great care of, especially when looking at the cost of replacing one with standard or aftermarket units. R&G huggers

work very well at deflecting debris from the underside of a bike, but the Shocktube adds another dimension by encapsulating the suspension unit completely without affecting its performance.” R&G RACING Alton, Hants, UK Tel: +44 (0)1420 89007 E-mail: info@rg-racing.com www.rg-racing.com

Sidi Cobra sports riding boot

ORDERS are now being taken for the brand new carbon fibre Arai RX-7 RC, one of the most exclusive motorcycle helmets ever produced. A maximum of 300 per year will be manufactured for export, guaranteeing rarity, and only 250 will be available in Europe. The helmet is based on the technology used for the GP-6 RC Formula 1 specification car-racing helmet and consists of an extremely stiff and light carbonfibre outer shell, reinforced with Arai’s Peripherally Belted construction. This system uses a reinforcing belt across the helmet, just above the visor opening, giving the outer shell even more strength and stiffness. The carbonfibre used is special aircraft industry material as used by Boeing. The outer shell is a mix of carbonfibre, Arai’s own resin and Zylon, a material used for its strength and thermal stability. Arai says its most experienced and skilled craftsmen take a whole working day to produce each shell, working only by hand. The EPS liner has five different densities seamlessly combined in one inner shell, and the RX-7 RC marks a completely new manufacturing benchmark in this respect, the company says. All the features proven on the RX-7 GP are present; the wide SAI visor, improved diffuser

Draggin Jeans Oilskins OILSKINS from Draggin Jeans combine revolutionary waterresistant fabric with a highly abrasion-resistant Kevlar lining for double protection. Unlike ‘normal’ denim motorcycle jeans, Draggin Oilskins are made from a fabric called Fortress (lightweight cotton impregnated with a specially formulated oil, to offer resistance to wind and rain whilst retaining its flexibility), which gives protection against rain showers. Not only does the oiling process repel the weather, it also allows perspiration to pass through the cotton, helping to prevent

moisture build-up around the legs in warmer conditions. Draggin Oilskins also feature a protective lining, knitted using a combination of Kevlar and Dyneema (the world’s strongest fibre) and secured with heavy duty triple-stitching in key impact areas to help keep skin protected during a slide. The company says they offer superior abrasion protection to basic woven Kevlar alternatives, surviving EU abrasion testing in key contact areas for 4.4 seconds, more than twice the duration of most other denim/Kevlar products on the market. In addition, CE-

approved armour can be fitted to the knees and hips to enhance impact protection. As the oil is impregnated into the fabric, rather than the traditional coating method, Draggin’s Oilskins are washable, enabling easier maintenance and prolonging life. Brembo B-Tech and B-Jet ENRICHED with new details and three new colour combinations, the Brembo helmets presented last November at EICMA are currently being distributed through specialist stores. Developed in cooperation with Italian helmet manufacturer Newmax, the ECE 22-05 homologated helmets are designed primarily for urban use and feature innovations, including the new Automatic Fit Belt (AFB) and bulbous visors. The AFB involves a continuous strap that ends in a winding device. The motorcyclist simply presses a button, which takes in the slack and fixes the strap automatically in the correct position under the chin. At 3cm, the strap is also wider than usual, and is in silky skin-friendly material for greater comfort. With a technopolymer shell, both helmets have a polycarbonate visor 2 mm thick, with high optical quality and anti-scratch and anti-fog treatment. The lining is removable and washable, and is made from hypo-allergenic and anti-static technological fabric. The visor rotation mechanism is an elegant allusion to Brembo brake units. Weighing only 1,350 kg, the B-Tech helmet is claimed to be the full-face urban helmet with the broadest field of vision, thanks to the extra space in its bubble visor, Colours are matt black

with titanium decals and matt black or glossy white chin guard, or with silver decals and glossy titanium chin guard, and glossy titanium with decals and silver chin guard. B-Jet is a jet helmet weighing 1,150 kg with a light and open look stemming from the special shape and slant of the dynamic lines of its shell. It can be equipped with a special pocket designed by Newmax (which, on request, replaces the standard earpiece) to hold the patented IDI Phone, a wireless communication device which allows for easy and immediate use of a mobile phone or other Bluetooth devices such as MP3 players and satellite navigation systems.

Weise Explorer jacket THE new Weise Explorer textile jacket is designed to deal with unpredictable weather conditions on a ride. Keeping the worst of the weather on the outside is a lightweight waterproof and breathable Isotex drop liner, designed so as not to restrict movement. In cold conditions, the Explorer’s removable 120g thermal quilted liner helps keep the body’s core insulated, and the 360-degree trouser connection zip prevents the jacket riding-up and allowing cold air in. Water Release System (WRS) channels rain water away from the jacket, preventing the material from becoming water-logged. The external pockets are also waterproof. When the temperature rises, the wearer can use the Explorer’s zipped

venting sections on the chest, arms and back, allowing cool air to circulate around the upper body. Protection is also a priority and a removable 3MTM belt and reflective piping across the shoulders and back help visibility in low light conditions. If the worst should happen, the 500/600 denier textile outer shell and CE-approved armour at the shoulders, elbows and back offer high abrasion resistance and maximum impact protection. Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, Furygan is in the process of expanding beyond its French base to establish a strong presence in other European markets. IDN’s Al Franck visited the apparel manufacturer’s headquarters in Nîmes to find out how the company is organising this expansion and what the future holds for this iconic brand. HE Furygan panther logo was inspired by the emblem of the French parachute regiment in which founder Jacques Segura served. After leaving the army, Jacques joined his brother in the family leather business (now owned by the Holding Trophy Group), and in 1969 went independent, setting up a company called Jacques SA to make ‘Fury Gants’ gloves. The name was soon shortened, and the company branched out from the mountain sports sector into motorcycling, parachuting and sailing gloves. Subsequently the main focus changed to motorcycle leathers, with textile ranges introduced more recently. The company now makes a large selection of jackets, trousers, one-piece suits, gloves, boots, backpacks, rider’s underwear and tank bags. “In the beginning my father did everything,”says son David, who took over as CEO in the year 2000,“He cut the leather, sewed pieces together and went round selling the finished product to dealers. My mother looked after the shop.” And then, as sponsored riders such as Agostini and

T

Laconi gained renown, this rubbed off on the brand and sales took off. “Back then some of our products were ubiquitous, for example Elephant gloves, the Pilatus rain suit or the Go jacket as worn by Agostini,” says David. And now? “Things are going very well for us. We have had annual growth of around 20% a year for the last five years. Over the last couple of years we have managed to avoid many of the problems facing others in the industry because in the new environment customers want reassurance from quality brands, and we have worked hard to inform the market that Furygan is just such a brand.” David expects this expansion to continue. “In three years’ time we should have grown even further, at least by 15% annually. Turnover is around E15 million now and should reach E20 million by 2013.”

Philosophy – quality and usability The company’s philosophy is always to provide useful technology and features for the rider. “Often, so called improvements can in fact get in the rider’s way,” says

The 4,000 sq.m. Furygan HQ at Nîmes in Southern France contains all of the company’s manufacturing, warehouse and office functions

David. “All our innovations are designed and tested on road and track, with practical usability at the forefront of our concerns.” The company’s carbon fibre Exo System, for example, makes it possible for gloves to absorb the energy of a shock, ensuring it is not transmitted to the bones of the hand, while not restricting movement or comfort. urygan products are designed to set the standard in terms of quality of materials, protection, resistance to abrasion, waterproofing and thermal comfort. All Furygan products, be they jackets, suits or gloves, have CE-approved protectors and all can be sent back to the company’s Nîmes workshops for repair, if need be. Its research centre collaborates closely with some of the foremost textile specialists in the world, including Dupont, Sympatex and Outlast. Furygan products are tried and tested in all major racing disciplines including MotoGP, Endurance, Superbike, Supersport and SuperMoto, where riders are asked to pay particular attention to ergonomics, comfort, excess heat and cold, and sometimes abrasion resistance and protectiveness in a crash! When returned to the Nîmes R&D workshop, the suits and gloves will be taken apart and scrutinised closely for weaknesses, with all feedback from this process incorporated into

fundamentally very experienced motorcycle apparel manufacturers, not just importers. We know what the problems are likely to be and where to look for them, which means we can catch them before it’s too late.” The company is proud to be one of the few still making leather apparel in France, and contrasts this with competitors, most of whom lack this long-established experience. All new designs are developed at the Nîmes facility, with parts also cut on site before despatch to an associate in Tunisia where the jackets, trousers and gloves are stitched and assembled.A typical jacket will require over 50 separate pieces of leather. Furygan has 45 staff in France with a further 200 at its Tunisian associate.

the latest range of garments. hat distinguishes one leather jacket from another? A matter of experience and know-how, according to David. “Anyone can make a beautiful leather jacket. The difficulty is producing them in volume and guaranteeing quality over the whole production run. We do this very well indeed, because we are

W

Facilities, processes and people Furygan relocated to a new 4,000sq.m building last year, close to the site of the company’s original premises on the outskirts of the old Roman city. The new facility has extensive office, production and warehouse space with plenty of room for expansion. One of the most important purchases in the near-future will be new state-of-the-art production and testing equipment. A second Taurus leather-cutting machine is being acquired to enable the company to keep up with demand.Added capacity here enables the company to retain flexibility through market peaks and troughs, while keeping stocks to the minimum and still being able to turn round orders as quickly as possible. Waterproofing is currently tested by inflating jackets on a special mannequin and checking for air leaks, and David is looking into enhancing the company’s quality control and test capacity, with abrasion and impact testing a particular priority. “The new testing machines will be important in ensuring we can actually improve the quality of our garments over the coming period while maintaining our current price levels,” says David. Design is a crucial element in the brand’s continuing success. “The first element is our panther logo,” says Sales and Marketing Director Jean-Marc Autheman. “That is a very important part of our brand identity. All our jackets carrying the logo prominently sell well, whereas classic designs without the logo are less popular.” he in-house design department covers everything from advertising and catalogues to developing the new apparel ranges. It works on new collections throughout the year, bringing in top freelance designers for new ideas from outside motorcycling, such as snowboarding and climbing apparel. After a new leather design has been agreed, the panels will be defined by the modellist and then sent to the leather

When the new collections are finished, the company’s French reps and international agents will be invited to Nîmes for a thorough introduction to the new ranges. In a cut-throat market with the ever-present risk of price-cutting, Furygan invests heavily in educating its agents and dealers’ sales teams to pass on the quality message to potential customers. The Nîmes facility has workshops where company riders’ apparel is made and customers’ suits, jackets and trousers can be altered and repaired

Products – keeping ahead “We are currently seeking niches where we can develop specific offers,” says Jean-Marc.“The 3⁄4-length textile jacket range is a good example of this – it is very popular in export markets such as the UK and Germany.” Another distinguishing feature in the 2011 range will be the widespread adoption of d3O soft armour, having signed a deal in 2010 to become exclusive d3O suppliers for motorcycle apparel in France. Furygan is working closely with the UK company to make specific Furygan d3O gel protection, with Furygan MotoGP riders currently testing this protection on the track, including new hip protectors. The advantages of d3O are many, says Jean-Marc, including much improved comfort and flexibility, and Furygan has worked hard to gain CE-approval for the new protection in a short time. All Furygan autumn/winter range garments have d3O, and some have Zandona hard protectors as well. he company is also branching out into the urban market, now huge in France and growing year after year. ”We want to create a scooter range that fills gaps in the market,”says Jean-Marc.“Italian products for this market tend to be OK but always lack something – too little protection or not weatherproof enough. We know we have an opportunity here. Our new West Side urban jacket, for example, has flexible d3O CE protection on elbows and shoulders and many other features, including removable quilted lining and hand-warming pockets for a pillion rider.” “But we are known as a full-on motorcycle apparel brand, which we will always remain,” adds David.“Our urban lines will have full motorcycle levels of protection and specification, even if used only in a commuting environment.” Other new lines include Kevlar jeans. Denim originated in 19th century Nîmes (hence the name: ‘de Nîmes’, or ‘from Nîmes’), and Furygan is now one of a very small number of manufacturers of denim still based in the ancestral home of the fabric. Another crucial element is the quality of the hides. These are sourced from top suppliers in South America and are processed at a specialist tannery in France with which Furygan has long-standing links. On arrival in Nîmes they are closely scrutinised by the company’s expert leatherworkers, and scratches and imperfections are marked in different colour chalk. The hides are then scanned and the chalk marks picked up by the scanner, with a computer then assessing the best use for each section, with these processed into panels accordingly. The company has developed an innovative system for dyeing leather, and colours available include red, green, brown, blue, grey, silver and many shades of black (matt, shiny, flat etc.).

T

Markets – spreading the good news Other than its mass-market motorcycle activities, the company also makes motorcycle apparel for the French police and army, and general apparel for the military, including jackets for elite mountain regiments and

INTERNATIONAL DEALER NEWS - NOV/DEC 2010

leather helmets for parachutists. Furygan claims to be the largest supplier of motorcycle leathers in France, but is also rapidly building up its textile ranges. David says that the mix is currently 50/50 but that in three years time it will be 30/70 in favour of textile garments, given that textile apparel sales are growing by 30% a year as the company introduces new fabrics, while leather sales are growing 10% annually. In terms of geographical coverage, some 65% of sales are in France, with 20% in the UK and most of the remainder in other European countries: mainly Germany, Belgium and Spain. urygan has identified the UK as a key market and launched the Pro-Shop concept across the country in September 2009 to underpin planned expansion there. Jean-Marc takes up the story. “We had good reps in the UK and a reasonable presence with good brand recognition, but we weren’t really in the population centres, so I realised we had to bring the brand to where the people are. The idea is to build a country–wide network with a maximum of ten or twelve outlets, with geographical exclusivity in their given area. Our first few did so well that the word soon spread and now we have eight. “In the UK, Furygan has been appreciated for quite some time and is a strong brand. The problem was finding the product, and now the Pro-Shop is giving customers access to this. Also, small and medium shops have come on board after hearing how well the big stores are doing with the brand.” And the company announced a further coup in October at INTERMOT in Cologne: Furygan has signed

F

New Denim 02 cotton/ Kevlar jeans Test equipment includes the Mannequin, which tests waterproofing and steam cleans the finished product

ROAD TRIP Nevis Marketing as exclusive distributors in the UK, increasing the reach of the brand from 100 to potentially more than 500 outlets across the country. Furygan has also opened its first Pro-Shop in Spain, with two more in the pipeline, but given the country’s economic difficulties, Jean-Marc is realistic about growth opportunities in this market. “We will expand in Spain when conditions improve. The first three Pro-Shops will act as an advertisement for the brand.” Further ahead, Furygan is looking at other European markets to see whether the concept will be relevant elsewhere. “We have had contacts about Pro-Shops in Germany, but this is not our main focus at the moment. That said, we could well open one in Belgium next year,” he adds.

The Furygan difference From its strong base in France, the Furygan team is putting in place the foundations to expand across Europe, methodically tackling one market at a time with products and sales networks that are optimised for each market. “What makes us different,” says David, “is that we are not just importers. We are high quality manufacturers, and have been for years. We have the know-how to do everything here in Nîmes, and have built up unique expertise in stitching, in treating and processing leather and fabric. That is what keeps us ahead. And as long as we continue concentrating on design, quality and communicating with our customers, I don’t think we’ll have too many problems. The fundamental element is that we have total confidence in our product. After that it all becomes easier.” And the Furygan CEO has a compelling message to dealers: “We are totally focused on our products, which means we can offer the best price/quality ratio on the market. We have worked very hard indeed to ensure that Furygan and its products will always deliver for you, and also for your customers.”

FURYGAN PRO-SHOPS THERE are now eight Pro-Shops in the UK, including Riders group dealerships in Bristol, Cardiff and Bridgewater, Ducati Coventry and OnYerBike in Buckinghamshire. They stock the full Furygan range and dedicate a minimum of 50 sq.m. to the brand with logos in the windows, posters and banners in the shop, and an initial order of at least E20,000. They benefit from special terms and conditions, and feedback from some of the UK Pro-Shops has been that they are shifting three times the volume of Furygan stock compared to the other prominent brands that they also sell. Sales and Marketing Director Jean-Marc Autheman says he is looking for a total of up to 12, in or close to major towns and cities.

NEWS ROOM

NEWS Mondial du Deux Roues DESK to return in 2011 Yamaha Motor Corp. is forecasting a 20% drop in its PTW sales in Europe and North America in 2010. This figure, doubles the original forecast of 10%. The company plans to shed 1,000 jobs shed worldwide in 2010, after 1,100 in 2009. Nevertheless, the company is expecting to break even in 2010 thanks to a 14 per cent growth in the Asian market. The MF Colour Bender folding back protector from Soul Race, designed by Franzan Design, has been chosen as one of the contenders for the 2010 Good Design Expo Awards in Tokyo. It is the only Level 2 back protector that can be placed under the seat of a scooter. Peugeot Scooters has just launched in China through its joint venture with Quingqi Motorcycles, with a five-model line-up comprising three scooters and two motorcycles from 80 to 125cc, all to be built at the JV’s Jinan plant. The Peugeot sales network in China will number 145 outlets and nine flagship stores across nine provinces. The French Gendarmerie has announced it will buy 6,000 C3 flip-up helmets from Schuberth for its motorcycle patrols. Engines Engineering of Italy has designed a motorcycle range for Mahindra of India which will be sold in South Asia, Africa and Latin America.

FOLLOWING the cancellation of the event in 2009 due to the recession, organisers AMC Promotion say the Mondial du Deux Roues motorcycle show in Paris will definitely be held in late 2011, with provisional

dates of 30 November to 4 December. The biennial show at the Porte de Versailles Expo Centre will resume its slot in those years when the INTERMOT show in Cologne does not run.

UK Motorcycle Live 2010 CAROLE NASH Motorcycle Live, formerly the NEC Bike Show, is set to kick off on November 27 with the highest level of manufacturer support the event has ever received, according to the organisers. Over 30 of the biggest names in motorcycling will appear at The NEC, Birmingham – including Honda, Ducati, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Kawasaki, BMW and British favourites Triumph and Norton, to name but a

few. They will be joined by a whole host of other exhibitors, racing stars and interactive features – all aimed at bringing the world of two wheels to life for visitors of all ages. Finlay McAllan, Managing Director of MCI Exhibitions, organisers of Carole Nash Motorcycle Live, said: “With increased support from the trade and industry set to encourage both new and existing riders to visit this year’s event, it should help to turn

the sales of motorcycles, scooters and all associated products back into an upward trend in 2011.” Carole Nash Motorcycle Live runs from November 27 to December 5.

EICMA to feature Custom zone AN important new feature at EICMA 2010 is Custom City, an exhibition area entirely dedicated to custom motorcycles, in the same way that the Green Planet zone is dedicated to electric and hybrid vehicles. Although many parts of the motorcycle market are in decline, the custom and touring sector is holding up well, now accounting for 17.5% of sales on the Italian market. And

parallel to actual motorcycle sales, the V-Twin aftermarket parts and accessories segment is also growing. As a result of all this, and with support from the sector itself, EICMA decided to set up an area devoted to customs. Custom City shows some of the best creations on the international scene, and will be close to HarleyDavidson, CR&S, Headbanger, Gray Indians Collection and

other V-Twin sector firms in Hall 2. Custom City has been set up in collaboration with Terre di Moto which will organise the custom show and is sponsored by Bikers Life magazine. Meanwhile, on the Harley stand nearby, the Motor Company will show its new SuperLow Sportster, together with four new CVO custom models. www.eicma.it
