CHIMNEY BUTTE RANCH and Gustin’s Diamond D Gelbvieh both of Mandan, N.D., jointly hosted the 2013 North Dakota Gelbvieh Association (NDGA) field day on September 14. The promise of an afternoon rainstorm did not deter Gelbvieh enthusiasts from South Dakota, Minnesota and Saskatchewan, Canada from joining NDGA members and commercial producer for the day’s events. Attendees had the opportunity to walk through a group of cow-calf pairs and first calf heifers at the Chimney Butte. Lunch was held at Chimney Butte’s headquarters, followed by a market update from Bobby Hendrickson, cattle buyer representing the National Farmers Organization in St. Cloud, Minn. Bobby has been buying Gelbvieh influenced feeder cattle from NDGA members for the past five years and provided

some firsthand insight into market trends over the next six months. At Gustin’s Diamond D Gelbvieh, the members and commercial producers viewed pairs on pasture owned by Gustins, as well as a group of partnership females owned with Matthew Rebenitsch of Gumbo Flats Gelbvieh. At the Diamond D headquarters, their bull battery was on display. A great supper was served with ample opportunity for Gelbvieh fellowship. Susan Willmon, AGA’s director of breed improvement gave a presentation on the development of genomic-enhanced EPDs and the direction towards the use of indexes. Rob Arnold, president of the AGA also spoke about the AGA’s strategic plan and new developments within the association. FFF
