SPRING Spring. It conjures up images of fresh new life, bright and inviting hues, and it’s arguably one of the best seasons for beautiful flowers. If you love light and cheery colours that epitomise the season perfectly then you’re in for a treat. “Large, pretty flowers like peonies are very popular in spring,” says Vicky Speirs from Vicky’s Flowers based in Livingston. “The bloom opens up to reveal lots of petals and I’m often asked for this flower to complement a vintage-garden themed wedding.” Not only do peonies look amazing, but in Chinese culture they actually symbolise a happy marriage! Another popular flower synonymous with spring is the tulip, which comes in a variety of striking colours. “A tulip is always an elegant spring flower to use in bouquets and on pew ends,” agrees Jillian Page from VOWS Award-winning Something Special Flowers in Blairgowrie. “For a colourful spring wedding, it can often be used as an alternative to roses.” It’s not all about looks either. Remember when you’re ordering your flowers to bear their fragrance in mind too. Ask your florist to add in some sweetly fragranced blooms and the scent will remind you of your wedding day whenever you smell it!

Flowers can be used in lots of interesting ways, not just bouquets and buttonholes
weddings take place! Brides tend to choose very fresh colours at this time of year to tie in with the sunny season. “My brides normally pick paler colours for their flowers,” says Laura Jardine from Flowers by Cherry Blossom in Glasgow. “They don’t necessarily go for brights, but blush pinks and ivories are very popular.” Summer is also when the most popular wedding flower, the rose, features most in its many different varieties. Vicky Speirs says, “Roses are so popular all year round but especially in summer. A lot of brides now favour the garden type roses rather than the smaller varieties or a mix of small spray roses and open roses for a bouquet.” If you’re having a marquee or outdoor wedding then Catherine Anderson from Blue Poppy Florist in Anstruther suggests using wild flowers in a rustic and romantic bouquet, or arranging them into jars or vases on tables for decoration. “Wild flowers like cornflowers and cosmos are delicate and perfect for relaxed weddings,” says Catherine. “They create a freshly-picked look.”

Autumn weddings have an entirely different feel to spring and summer celebrations: the leaves are falling from the trees, the evenings are drawing in and it’s evident that winter is on the way! The colour range for autumnal flowers may not be as diverse as the seasons gone before, but that doesn’t mean you’re stuck with oranges and browns. “Darker or richer coloured flowers are often chosen for autumn weddings,” says Jillian Page. “Mango-coloured callas, purple lisianthus, sunflowers, aubergine roses; they’re all beautiful and perfect for September/October weddings.” Dahlias are a perfect choice and a flower that’s becoming fashionable again. The colour palette goes from pale cream to velvety purples, and they look stunning in a bouquet or a top table display. Jillian also loves the textures created by seed heads, and thinks they look great in a groom’s buttonhole. “Gorgeous, textured, natural seed heads are perfect for late autumn weddings and so pretty bound in twine as a buttonhole,” she says. Again, think about the scents created by your bouquet and add some seasonal herbs like oregano, rosemary and lavender to create a stunning smell. Your guests will be inhaling the scent as you walk past them down the aisle!

WINTER When it’s cold and frosty outside you might think that your flower choice will be limited, but that’s not the case. The period around December and January can be a peak time for florists, with Christmas flowers in demand, so bear that in mind and give yourself plenty of time to meet with your chosen florist and come up with something perfect for you. Flowers and especially foliages are in abundance in winter, and creating a bouquet with stark whites, greens and jewellike berries is perfect for the festive season. Tall centrepieces filled with amaryllis flowers in red or white look amazing, and Christmas wreaths entwined with berried ivy make for cheerfully festive decorations in a marquee, venue or even on the church door for your ceremony. A flower that’s been used for a while in American weddings, the succulent, is becoming increasingly popular for Scottish weddings too, says Jillian Page. “Succulents or echeveria have gorgeous silver and burgundy tones with beautiful frosty texture.” A winter floral arrangement wouldn’t be the same without clusters of red or white berries dotted in amongst lush green foliage either. “Berries create a lovely texture and add warmth to flower arrangements,” says Catherine Anderson. “Gypsophila also looks stunning on its own in a bouquet, or piled into centrepieces,” adds Vicky Spiers. “The stark whiteness looks like glittering snow!”

At last! Around 1,000 same-sex couples are anticipated to marry in Scotland this year. Katie Bletcher takes a look at the new legislation
I
t’s finally official – same-sex couples in Scotland can now legally marry! The Marriage and Civil Partnership (Scotland) Act 2014 came into force on 16th December 2014 and the first ceremonies were planned for 31st December. Scotland became the 17th country in the world to allow same-sex marriage when the Act achieved a majority vote in the Scottish Parliament last February - a move MSP Alex Neil says shows Scotland's commitment to equality.
“The passage of the new law was a profoundly emotional moment for many LGBTI people” “From 31st December, same-sex couples who want to show their love and commitment to each other could get married in front of family and friends at a ceremony they choose,” he said. “This will be an important signal that our nation is absolutely committed to the same rights for all our citizens.” It took until the end of 2014 for the legislation to go through while amendments were made to the Equality Act 2010, which is reserved to Westminster, and a number of regulations were put in place in Scotland.

Religious and belief bodies can now opt in to performing same-sex marriage ceremonies, although the Catholic Church and Church of Scotland remain opposed. But the Equality Network, who campaigned for equal partnership rights for same-sex couples, has welcomed the legislation. The charity’s Tom French said, “The passage of the new law was a profoundly emotional moment for many LGBTI people who grew up in a country that only decriminalised same-sex relationships in 1980. Many thousands of same-sex couples are now looking forward to their wedding day, when they will be able to celebrate their relationship in front of their family and friends with the exact same recognition and rights as any other couple in Scotland.” Ashley and Nikki Fraser-Green planned to marry on Hogmanay, three years after their civil partnership. Before the wedding Ashley told SWD, “We were legally not allowed to call our partnership a wedding or marriage. However, following the day we can be recognised as a married couple. It’s a great opportunity to go into a new year as a confirmed married couple and family unit.” The Equality Network anticipates around 1,000 same-sex couples will marry in Scotland in 2015 and around 500 per year thereafter. Under the new legislation, couples can also convert their existing civil partnerships to marriage, free of charge. However, civil partnerships will also still exist.
“We had always joked about how I would be the proposer!” laughs Aynsleigh.”It turns out sneaky Chloe had been speaking to my parents months in advance of doing it and asking permission!” The couple held their first wedding in September 2014 at the Horizon Hotel in Ayr. “It was a beautiful ceremony and I had my little dog Jasmine there too.” The Carmichaels are delighted that the legislation will allow them to legally call each other 'wife'. “It is such a historical and momentous moment,” says Aynsleigh. “To me personally, it is about time I was treated exactly the same as heterosexuals. Although we had our special day, it was not legally binding. There were still the questions of ‘So are you married now, or what?’” Aynsleigh and Chloe opted to marry on 31st December because they just couldn’t wait a minute longer! “Our lovely celebrant Gerrie and her beautiful better half Susan are holding a ceremony in Bell & Felix in Shawlands to convert their civil partnership to a marriage. They will time their vows with the stroke of midnight and then Chloe and I will step up so that Gerrie and Susan can marry us!” An excited Aynsleigh said Nicola Sturgeon and Patrick Harvie were to be the witnesses on the night, too! COAST TO COAST… In October 2013,
Dougal whisked me away to Padstow in Cornwall, a very pretty town on the coast. He proposed before we went out for dinner with an antique ring which he chose himself (with a little help from his sisters, I reckon!). The ring had been hiding under his hat for a day – it was a very big surprise!
ROMANTIC RETREAT… We live
in Devon but I’m from Glasgow and Dougal’s from Grandtully, so it wouldn’t have felt right to marry down south. I had a romantic idea about getting married in the middle of nowhere and when I watched a video of Crear with two of my friends, I knew it was the one. My mum went to visit on my behalf with her boyfriend, Malcolm, and they took lots of pictures. We booked it without having visited ourselves; it just felt right.
MADE TO MEASURE… When I went shopping for my dress, I didn’t see many styles I liked – I wanted something simple and understated. I’d read about Flossy and Dossy in Scottish Wedding Directory so I went to visit the designer, Wendy, and had my dress custom made. PERSONAL TOUCHES… I had my great-
great-great grandmother’s pin sewn into the waistband, and I wore a marquise diamond bracelet given to me by my dad. My mum gave me a pair of sparkly Jimmy Choos as a wedding gift.

really have a theme; Crear has clean neutral colours which we accentuated with hessian, bunting and wild flowers. I wanted the colours of the wedding to mirror the landscape. My bridesmaids, Rachael and Lauren, wore aqua green and heather purple. Our photographers, Audrey and David, captured the landscape perfectly.
FAMILY FEAST… We’d booked Crear for the
whole weekend, and Dougal made lasagne for both of our families the night before the wedding. Meanwhile I was doing the favours and the table plan, but I managed to chill out towards the end of the night!
BORN TO RUN… Our humanist ceremony
was lovely and very personal. We drank whisky from quaichs, which relaxed us and felt quite meaningful and ceremonial. Our music was personal to us. I walked down the aisle to The Kinks’ All Day and All of the Night, and we walked back down the aisle to Bruce Springsteen’s Born to Run.
OFF KILTER… We did the speeches before the meal. They were all brilliant. Our best man, Derek, was keen to walk around while he did his speech, but as he was doing so his kilt was gradually falling down. Eventually Dougal’s sister had to tell Derek to pull his kilt up before we found out if he was a true Scotsman underneath! BAND TOGETHER… Our first dance was
Isn’t This World Enough?? by Glasgow band Admiral Fallow. We had a traditional ceilidh band, and then Pin Up Nights DJs’ did a brilliant set which included lots of Northern Soul and Motown to get everyone dancing.

The Scottish Wedding Show takes place twice a year at the SECC in Glasgow – this show was on 25th and 26th October 2014 and the next one is on 21st and 22nd February this year – and attracts hundreds of exhibitors from around Scotland. There are catwalk fashion shows, a VIP area, a beauty zone and a cocktail bar. This event even had a beautiful afternoon tea room styled by Supernova Wedding Design and Flowers!
