2015 Patoka Playground Come out to play, stay in Southern Indiana Patoka Reservoir is the second-largest man-made lake in Indiana. But in the Patoka River valley, it remains the biggest point on the map. While the region where the river ambles has seen dozens of other attractions grow up and expand since the lake’s creation in the early 1970s — and several of those attract more visitors — Patoka Reservoir remains the heart of this area’s outdoor activity, and on a grand scale. The 8,800-acre lake continues to be the focal point of Patoka’s 26,000 acres, provides habitat for freshwater jellyfish and bald eagle nesting sites. But the recreation — fishing, swimming, skiing and such — are only byproducts. The project was developed for flood control and that area reaches into Dubois, Crawford and Orange counties. Patoka is the only lake in the state to offer floating cabins, wine cruises and rentable houseboats. The property itself is divided into major sections, called State Recreation Areas. Here is a quick look at the major SRAs.

Park fee changes for 2015 Indiana State Parks and other DNR properties have provided affordable values in outdoor recreation for nearly a century. It takes money to conserve and manage these places where memories are made naturally. To continue doing so in the manner Hoosiers deserve, the DNR has increased the fees for many features at these destinations. Here are a few of the new costs at Patoka reservoir and elsewhere in Indiana: ■■ In-state daily entrance: $7 ■■ Out-of-state daily entrance: $9 ■■ In-state annual pass: $50

■■ Out-of-state annual pass: $70 ■■ Golden Hoosier Pass (65/over): $25 ■■ Motorized lake permit: $25 ■■ Firewood cutting: $10/load; 3/$25 ■■ Full hookup camping: $30/Sun. to Wed., $40/weekends and $44/holidays ■■ Electric site camping: $23/Sun. to Wed., $30/weekends and $33/holidays ■■ Nonelectric camping: $16 Sun. to Wed., $19 Thur. to Sat. and $22 on holidays ■■ Primitive camping: $12/night For a full list of price changes, call the reservoir at 812- 685-2464, or visit www. in.gov/dnr/parklake/

Lick Fork and South Lick Fork Dubois County fishermen, boaters and skiers approaching from the Jasper area will be drawn primarily to the two boat ramps in Dubois County. The South Lick Fork Ramp, located along State Road 164 about 12 miles east of Jasper, appeals to fishermen since it sits at the tip of a long zone of controlled water where the speed limit is 10 mph. The Lick Fork Ramp, located 31⁄2 miles north of the South Lick Fork Ramp, is in unlimited-speed waters and should be the choice of skiers and boaters. The ramp is accessible from a road leading north (State Road 545) from State Road 164 just east of the Celestine community and west of South Lick Fork Ramp. From the north, the ramp can be reached by driving south from the dam and tail water area, past the Patoka Lake Water Treatment Plant.

Newton-Stewart The 4,564-acre Newton-Stewart State Recreation Area is at the center of Patoka’s summertime. Located just north of Wickliffe, it is the main recreation area on the lake. There are 455 modern campsites, a camp store, marina, hiking and bicycling trails, 18-hole disc golf course, archery course, the visitors center, a beach and expanses of wooded area to explore. The South Ramp is nearest the main entrance and opens into 5-mph waters. It is the frequent choice of boaters with sailing vessels. The Newton-Stewart Boat Ramp opens unlimited-speed waters where skiing is allowed. A third ramp is located in the Fishermen’s Campground and is reserved

THE HERALD ■ FRIDAY, MAY 15, 2015

Come discover Dubois County’s hidden gems By JESSICA LINDAUER For The Herald Geographically centered between caves, coasters, lakes and Lincoln, Dubois County is connected through heritage, culture, recreation, arts and architecture. Just minutes from Patoka Lake, come off the water for an adventure to remember! To begin your journey, stop at the Dubois County Museum — one of the largest county museums in the state of Indiana. This museum showcases the rich German heritage and history of the Dubois County area. A new exhibit, The Sportsman Exhibit, set to open in July 2015, is a 2,000-squarefoot room that will display mounted animals, fish, and birds from throughout the world. A large display of animals from the Dubois County area will be featured in the exhibit with a 10 x 31 sq. ft. outdoor mural background featuring a landscaped area in front. Other items that will be on display are guns made by local early gunsmiths and artifacts from local sportsman and various tribes from foreign countries. A picture wall is also in the plans to display photos of local sportsman with their trophies. Another unique exhibit at the Dubois County Museum is “Main Street Dubois County”, featuring 17 rooms portraying life at the turn of the 20th century. The village includes a barber shop, bank, hotel, photographer and shoe shop and any other significant buildings. A hands-on area houses a one-room schoolhouse and play yard, an interactive Lewis & Clark expedition boat, dress-up area and a log reading nook. Enjoy a day in downtown Jasper. Start your morning with a stroll on the Riverwalk, a paved walking trail along the Patoka River. This path winds through the scenic wooded areas and farmlands within walking distance of downtown. Along the path, stop at the Jasper City Mill. The mill replicates two previous mills that once stood along the Patoka in the 1800s. Watch the workings of the waterwheel and see how the cornmeal that is sold

on site is made. Enjoy breakfast at one of the local cafés followed by unique and specialty shopping around the square in Jasper. Visit the Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame located on the Vincennes University Jasper Campus showcasing memorabilia from high school, college and professional athletes throughout Indiana. Don’t forget to stop at the well-known Schnitzelbank Restaurant. Enjoy the award-winning Super46 Bratzel sandwich that was voted Indiana’s No. 1 sandwich! Also located in Dubois County is The Spirit of Jasper Train, a recently restored passenger train that takes an excursion to French Lick and multiple Ride & Dine trips. Board the luxurious, climate-controlled lounge cars for a trip of a lifetime. Visit Huntingburg to enjoy a night at the ballpark. Huntingburg League Stadium is home to the Dubois County Bombers, a summer collegiate wooden bat league team. League Stadium was the set for the Rockford Peaches home field in the motion picture “A League of Their Own.” This unique experience will portray the spectator as if they were taken back in time to a game in the 1940s era. While in town, stop at Historic Fourth Street for unique and antique shopping. Throughout Dubois County one can find multiple significant and historic churches. Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper is an 1880 Romanesque, old-world style church that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Noteworthy features include 3 beautiful Austrian mosaics with 50 million stones and statues made of marble and pewter as well as the Italian marble altar. The Monastery Immaculate Conception in Ferdinand was recently restored and is home to one of the largest communities of Benedictine women in the nation. It is also on the National Register of Historic Places and is designated an Official Project of Save America’s Treasures. Looking for quality golf at value pricing? Sultan’s Run Golf Club extends over 224

acres of woods, wildlife and water. In 2015 it was voted the Golf Course of the Year in the State of Indiana by the INGCOA. Finish at the 18th hole where the beautiful waterfall sets the scene. Just ten minutes down the road, enjoy another 18 holes at Buffalo Trace Golf Course. Buffalo Trace plays 5,985 yards with a par 71. Dubois County hosts several unique European inspired and music festivals throughout the year. The Jasper Strassenfest takes place July 30 to Aug. 2 around the Square in downtown Jasper and celebrates the area’s rich German heritage. It is a weekend full of events including several sports tournaments, a 5K run/walk, approximately 30 entertainment acts throughout the weekend. Enjoy polka masses, carnival rides, an open-air biergarten, and much more. The fourth annual Heartland Half Marathon, 5K and Team Challenge will take place Saturday, September 5. The Heartland Team Challenge is a relay comprised of a 4-person team, and follows the same course as the Heartland Half Marathon. The course features a start along the Patoka River near the Jasper City Mill and Jasper Train Depot and finishes in the shade in the parks on the banks of the same river just a stone’s throw away. All the proceeds will be given to the Philip R. Dawkins Heartland Vascular Center to be utilized for new integrative medicine services provided to patients at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center. Along with the Heartland Half Marathon the Heartland Kids Fun Run and Festival will take place on Friday, September 4. Festivities will include health and wellness booths along with fitness activities highlighted by a 1.1 mile Fun Run, which will complete a 12-week youth challenge. The Festival will take place at Dave Buehler Plaza from 5-7:30 p.m. with the Fun Run beginning at 6 p.m. Kids entering K-8th grade can stay active all summer with the Kid Fun Run and Festival. To enter the Youth Challenge, register for the Heartland Kids Fun Run and visit the website www.heartland

halfmarathon.com to print a copy of the Race Log. Kids will run and log 12 miles in the weeks prior to September 4th. Bring the completed Race Log on race day to be registered for exciting prizes! See the website for suggested training and nutrition ideas. Participants entering grades K-3rd are permitted to run with a buddy. Race registration includes a t-shirt, medal, and goody-bag. The first 100 participants to register for the Kids Fun Run will receive a special gift! Fun for the whole family, the Festival is free and open to the public. The Ferdinand Folk Festival is a free Earth and Family-friendly event that features nationally acclaimed musicians as well as regional and local acts set for Sept. 19. Be sure to enjoy the farmers market and booths of local artists and artisans selling their products. Bring your cooler, chairs and a blanket to enjoy an afternoon relaxing in beautiful 18th Street Park! DC Multisport is excited to host the 3rd Annual Ferdinand Folk Fest Fondo, a bicycling event designed to entertain all levels of bicyclists in partnership with the Ferdinand Folk Fest. The two-day event will be September 19 and 20 and will take you through the rolling hills of Dubois County with forays into Perry and Spencer counties. The routes and distances were designed to be welcoming to novice cyclists and challenging for the experienced gearheads. The event starts and finishes at the magnificent Monastery Immaculate Conception sitting high atop the town of Ferdinand. On Saturday, multiple routes will cater to a variety of interests and abilities including 24-, 36-, and 50-mile loops while Sunday will offer a single 50-mile loop. Three SAG stops are positioned at convenient, well equipped, cycling friendly locations along the routes on both Saturday & Sunday. For more information on Dubois County attractions and events please contact the Dubois County Visitor’s Center by calling 800-968- 578 or 812-482-9115 or visit the new website at www. visitduboiscounty.com.

Nature’s beauty, variety fill Crawford County By HAROLD ALLISON For The Herald One county I always enjoy visiting when I go on a day trip is Crawford County. Most people pass through Crawford County on either I-64 or State Road 64 and never realize what exciting locations are to be found on either side of these roads. The village of Taswell is a good place to begin our tour of this rugged county. Located on State Road 64, Taswell is a quiet little country town. To its north are two prongs of the scenic Patoka Lake, which at 8,880 acres is Indiana’s second-largest lake. South of Taswell, along the county road that passes under the railroad that runs through the village, is the Yellow Birch Ravine, a state nature preserve. The area is named for a few yellow birch trees that are usually found in northern regions. It is rare

to find one this far south. Traveling on to the hamlet of Mifflin, once the site of a salt works, is a low but pretty waterfall on Otter Creek. Along the county road that runs east from Mifflin is a series of wetlands that have been constructed on Hoosier National Forest land. South of Mifflin is another Hoosier National Forest area. This is Hemlock Cliffs, one of the most impressive natural areas in Indiana. The site is well named for there are both hemlock trees and a series of cliffs as well as deep ravines, waterfalls, rock shelters that were utilized by Native Americans for hundreds of years, and a large natural arch. The Hoosier has extensive acreage in Crawford County that features such attractions as Carnes Mill, a historic site on the Little Blue River, and Tar Springs, where petroleum and mineral waters reach the surface and which is another historic site

Play, stay outdoors in scenic Martin County By MARIE HAWKINS For The Herald Martin County has many things to offer visitors from forests, rivers, rock formations and more. There are many scenic views to be taken in that will leave an overwhelming image in one’s mind. Visit the Jug Rock (the mascot for Shoals School), the House Rock, The Pennical, The Flat Rock at Hindostan Falls as well as McBride’s Bluff. The view from one of the last two fire towers in the state offers breathtaking, 360-degree views from the top. Wander the many hills and valleys, see the abundant wildlife along the roads, fields and in the sky. Camping is available in The Martin State Forest and West Boggs Lake. White

River as well as West Boggs Lake offer boat launches. Fishing is available on White and Lost rivers, as well as West Boggs Lake and numerous lakes and ponds in Martin State Forest. Some of the few things to enjoy in Martin County are canoeing, repelling, spelunking , fishing, hunting, hiking, bird watching and simply relaxing. If you like photography, this is the place for amazing photos to be taken. Visit us in Martin County, feel the friendliness along with all the activities one can do in the outdoors. Call the chamber office at 812-295-4093 or visit www.visitmartincounty.org for more information. County brochures with photos and a marked map telling how to find these beautiful sites is also available.

as well as a lovely natural location. Little Blue River, which passes through Crawford County from English to the Ohio River, is a great canoeing stream. A variety of scenic natural features are found all along this Hoosier gem of a river. Along and south of I-64 are several other interesting sites. The uncommon umbrella magnolia, a southern species, is found in Indiana only in the area east of the village of St. Croix, and Sulphur Springs on State Road 66 is a historic mineral water location now long gone. The Stinking Fork of the Little Blue River, which enters the Little Blue at Sulphur Springs, is named for the mineral waters located near the stream. Some very outstanding natural sites are to be found in this area and are well worth exploring. State Road 66, which runs through both Crawford and Perry counties, is a very sce-

nic road. It can provide an enjoyable road trip through this picturesque southern Indiana countryside. East of State Road 66 on county roads is the Buzzard Roost Overlook on National Forest lands. This is a scenic site above the Ohio River with a somewhat rugged hiking trail that winds down to the Ohio. Farther east on a county road is the quaint village of Alton, where the Little Blue River runs into the Ohio. From Alton, county roads run along the Ohio past Bulls Point, the Ox Bow Bend of the Ohio, Cave Sandy and Artist Point, which features a great view of the river, Fredonia, a historic site, and Leavenworth. The latter location also features a grand view of the Ohio at the Overlook Restaurant, noted for its fine food as well as its spectacular view of the Ohio.

Spencer County: A vacation in your backyard By MELISSA BROCKMAN For The Herald Imagine riding the nation’s first launched wing roller coaster, sipping frozen hot chocolate, measuring your height against a young Abe Lincoln’s, and tasting local wines from the rolling hills of southern Indiana all in one trip. You can find all of that and much more right in your backyard. Spencer County is home to two familyfriendly destinations: Santa Claus, Indiana, and Lincoln’s Indiana Boyhood Home. The town of Santa Claus is a magical and historical place to visit for the entire family. With the only post office in the world to have the Santa Claus name, thousands of letters pile into this small, charming town annually. Visitors from all over have letters and Christmas cards postmarked from the one-and-only Santa Claus, Indiana. Plan for more than a day of fun at Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari. In addition to the new steel roller coaster – Thunderbird, the parks also feature TIME Magazine’s choice for the #1 wooden roller coaster in the nation – The Voyage. And USA Today named Splashin’ Safari the country’s best water park, with two water coasters, loads of family raft rides, and children’s slides. The parks offer free soft drinks, free parking, free inner tube usage, free sunscreen, and free Wi-Fi. Visit the Santa Claus Museum & Village to learn about the history of this picturesque town and see the fully restored 1935 Santa Statue, Santa Claus Church, and original Santa Claus Post Office. Venture over to Santa’s Candy Castle for a festive Christmas experience for believers of all ages and browse through the gigantic Santa Claus Christmas Store for holiday treasures. Find outdoor recreational activities in Santa Claus, too. Play a round of mini golf at Frosty’s Fun Center or try your swing at the 18-hole Christmas Lake Golf Course. Ride a horse through the winding trails

and enjoy horseback riding activities for all ages at Santa’s Stables. Only five miles away from Santa Claus is where our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, grew up. Spencer County is where young Abe spent 14 years of his life from ages 7 to 21. Visit the fertile ground of Lincoln’s childhood home at Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial and see a replica of Lincoln’s homestead at the Living Historical Farm. Right across the street from the National Memorial is Lincoln State Park, established as a memorial to Abraham’s mother, Nancy Hanks. Walk the trails on the same grounds Abe walked many years ago and visit the Lincoln Bicentennial Plaza which celebrates his 200th birthday. Take a relaxing look back into history with 14 Lincoln-era replica cabins and an artifact-filled museum at the Lincoln Pioneer Village & Museum in Rockport. Stop by the Lincoln Landing where Abe launched his first flatboat trip to New Orleans, inspiring his anti-slavery views. And see the Lincoln Ferry Park that sparked Lincoln’s pursuit to become a lawyer after he was sued over his ferry business. With one of only two archabbeys in the U.S., the Saint Meinrad Archabbey is a must

see on every visitor’s list. From beautiful architecture to the tranquility and peace of the grounds, the Archabbey is a great place to get away and relax in St. Meinrad. For a taste of the country, visit Monkey Hollow Winery in St. Meinrad and Pepper’s Ridge Winery in Rockport. Sipping wine on the covered porch is the perfect way to unwind and enjoy the scenery. Also, you don’t want to miss a chance to travel back in time to the good ol’ days of drive-in movie theaters. As one of the few remaining, Holiday Drive-In in Reo has five screens and two concession stands. New

digital projectors were added to all five screens in 2015 to make the movie-viewing experience even more exceptional. Watch your favorite stars on the big screen, under the stars. The Spencer County Visitors Bureau can assist families and groups in planning their trip with an itinerary, welcome packets, lodging information, upcoming events, local maps, hours of area businesses, and more. Visit SantaClausInd.org or Indiana AbeLincoln.org for online information or call the Visitors Bureau at (888) 444-9252.

Nestled among the rolling, forested hills of Perry County, it features 208 acres. The farm is owned and operated by Dick Betz and Rosa Lee Sheard. Visitors can’t help but notice several yurts as they approach the farm. The largest yurt houses a classroom and an herb store. Other yurts are available for rent by the day, week or month. They provide a “luxury camping” experience. Japanese soaking tubs and packages for spa days are available. Call for directions. The caverns opened to the public in 1973. Stalactites, stalagmites, columns and drapiers adorn the cavern walls, ceiling and floor. The caverns also has a natural stream flowing through with a waterfall that you will walk over. Caverns are open year around with tours at 10:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. The caverns and the village are open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
