First group of change agents graduated to empower the thumb generation

The training started on 17 August 2015 but the official inauguration was held on 25 August 2015 presided over by Fr. A. M. Joseph (Executive Director, Don Bosco Tech) and in the presence of Fr. George Mathew (Executive Director, Don Bosco Tech), Fr. Arul Maran (Director, Don Bosco Skill Mission), Fr. Remesh Cherian (Asst. Director-Programmes, Don Bosco Tech), Bro. Chako and Fr. Jeeson (Regional Coordinator, Don Bosco Tech). Fr. Joseph traced the growth of Don Bosco Tech and enthused the young

trainers with passion in the mission ‘Skilling India’. Tata Strive came forward to provide life skill training and empowerment coaching for the trainers, which helped them to be better coaches to help youngsters in need. Fr. Noble George from Don Bosco (Okhla, Delhi) gave one week of intense training on methodology of education and pedagogy. They had also number of activities and exposure trips aimed at holistic formation of the trainers.

The valedictory and certification ceremony was held on November 15, 2015 in the Don Bosco Skill Mission campus. The function was presided over by Fr. Arul Maran in the presence of Fr. Remesh Cherian. Special prizes were distributed to different persons for their excellence in various fields. The function was made colourful by the variety of cultural programmes performed by the new trainers. Some of the trainers came forward to share their experience about the training programme. One of the new trainers Pavani shared, “Even though my father did not allow me to come to Bangalore for training with my sheer determination I managed to convince him and finally joined here. After three months training at DBSM, I have gained lot of

Doing so, he said, “For an organization like Don Bosco Tech, it is an absolute necessity to have a modern and responsive website that is rich in information and can be used as a resource.” He appreciated the talent and hard work put in by the communication team to create and launch the site. We hope that browsing through our new site would be much easier and useful! The team would appreciate creative feedback so that they can address the same towards better experience. It is planned to create additional facilities so that the organization can not only have a virtual presence but an online tool for internal management, public utility and a unified location for information, involvement and interventions.

NEW BATCH UNDER AXIS BANK FOUNDATION INAUGURATED AT DON BOSCO TECH (AIDA, DIMAPUR) Don Bosco Tech in Nagaland has trained over 3000 unemployed rural youth in Hospitality, Beauty and Wellness, Food & Beverages services, Housekeeping and ISMO. He stated, “It is the deliberate decision on the part of Don Bosco Tech to work for the less privileged youth with minimum educational qualification.” The audiences were enthralled by Angami and Nepali folk songs, Chakhesang and Sangtam folk dances performed by the trainees. After the inaugural function, parents-staff meeting was held. During the meeting the parents were informed about the training process.

But here I learnt what is family spirit and Joy. I want to be a committed DB Tech trainer.” There was great transformation with regard to personal life and all of them gained extra knowledge in their specific domains. Finally all the 38 of them successfully completed the training and were given offer letters as Don Bosco Tech trainers. Now all of them have been placed in jobs in the various centres. Two of them are undergoing advance training at DBSM for master trainers. We are ever grateful to Fr. A. M. Joseph as this has been his dream project

“Communication is the solvent of all problems and is the foundation for personal development,” says Ipsha Pathak (DON BOSCO Tech - ITES trainer and Communication Correspondent, Bihar) during the first state communication workshop held at Don Bosco Tech (Muzaffarpur, Bihar) on November 11, 2015. The workshop was to improvise the documentation skills of the trainers, to capture every minute details and document it interestingly, it would help in enhancing the knowledge and help as a valuable resource to build the capacity of the trainers. Such archived documents could be used to circulate to different centers for capacity building and experience sharing. A one day workshop was organized for participants from nine centres of Don Bosco Tech (Bihar). Ms. Ipsha Pathak was the main resource person for the workshop. Mr Rajan Bernard (Program Coordinator, HANS Project) graced the inaugural function as the Chief Guest. Br. Felix (Assistant Director, Ashadeep, Muzaffarpur) addressed the participants about the importance of such innovative workshop, and wished that it would lead to a proper documentation and written presentation of all the events, case studies, etc in the future.

As a part of the its growth and striving for greater visibility and public presence, Don Bosco Tech Society has re-launched its website with a totally new design and style that is responsive to the latest gadgets and screens currently in use. The intention was to develop a user friendly website that would provide the information as per the required standards of today. The web pages are featured in bright color with good B/W photographs and an uncluttered design with the updated logo. The new website has been made faster, easier to navigate and more user friendly. It has a top navigation bar with a drop down menu that enables users find the information or resource easier and faster. With a high resolution the site can be best viewed in the latest browsers - Internet Explorer 11, Chrome, Mozilla Firefox. Additional features also include digital directory, online donation portal and videos which is selfexplanatory about our work.

Don Bosco Tech (AIDA) centre located in Dimapur (Nagaland) is one of the oldest skill training centres of on Bosco which has trained and placed many trainees especially in domains such as Hospitality, Beauty, Wellness and Hair Styling for unemployed youth of Nagaland. The inauguration of the 15th batch at the center was held on November 10, 2015. Dr. K. P. A. Ilyas, IPS (Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone II, Dimapur District) was the Honorable Chief Guest and Rev. Fr. C. T. Varghese (Rector and Administrator, Don Bosco campus, Dimapur) graced the function as the Guest of Honor. Dr. Ilyas in his inaugural address encouraged the trainees by saying, “You have wonderful inborn traits like discipline, beauty, simplicity and respect for community, which are scarcely found in other communities.” Rev. Fr. Varghese encouraged the trainees to work hard to be successful and challenged them to create a spark through hard work, discipline and commitment to reach the goal. Br. DON BOSCO THE LAUNCHES NEW WEBSITE WITH NEW FEATURES

CONTINUE THE JOURNEY OF HOPE Sushma belongs to a maha dalit family from Muzaffarpur district of Bihar. Her family consists of her parents, three sisters and a brother. Her family does not have a steady financial income, leading to a life of mostly one meal a day for the family. Her father Ganesh Ram is a farmer with a meager earning and finds it hard to make both ends meet. Sushma was always hopeful and worked hard for her education and managed her high school studies by borrowing money and learning materials from her friend sand well neighbours. Btu after matriculation, she just could not continue her further education. By enquiring from a friend who worked in a sewing centre, she tried to find out about possibilities of getting a training for herself so that she could try to earn for self and family. Fortunately, she also met Sr. Pushpa, a local nurse from her village who informed her about Asha Deep and its activities. When she reached Asha Deep, she felt her dream becoming true. After the inventory test and counseling, she was enrolled to take training in in Nursing Assistant domain under Poorest Areas Civil Society (PACS) project. Under this project, Don Bosco Tech imparts a 3-month skill training programme to the vulnerable and marginalized youth from socially excluded groups. She did her training eagerly and demonstrated her simple and hard working nature. It was evident that that she would stand on her feet to support her family. After three months intensive training, she finally secured a job at Jyoti Bhawan Health centre, Kanti. As she is provided with accommodation and food she is able to save the salary for the family needs as well. She enjoys her duty and aims to become a good nurse as well as help the poor and the needy. She says, “After completing my training I went home and gathered all unemployed youth in my village to spread the message about Don Bosco Tech and Asha Deep. It was really convincing for all of them because the live case study was standing in front of them to share the transformation story. Now may youngsters from my village are enrolled in the skill training program at Asha Deep. I am grateful to Fathers, Brothers, and the CoWorkers for helping me to grow in my life.”

The inauguration ceremony of Jaswantnagar, Safai and Etawah city centres of Don Bosco Tech in Etawah district, Uttar Pradesh was held at Don Bosco Vocational Training Centre (Safai, Uttar Pradesh) on November 7, 2015. The ceremony was presided by the Honorable Chief Guest Shri. Shivpal Singh Yadav (Minister of PWD, Uttar Pradesh Government). These centers are to offer skill training to the underprivileged youth in Electrical, Automobile repair, AC Refrigeration Repair and Beautician domains. Around 200 students and staff of Don Bosco Tech (Uttar Pradesh) were present for the programme. M r. A b n i s h J a n a r d a n ( P r o j e c t Coordinator-UPSDM, DON BOSCO Tech) formally welcomed the Chief Guest, all the dignitaries, staff, and students of DON BOSCO Tech. In his welcome address he informed the trainees on the day-to-day activities involved during the training and about the expected discipline, time table and rules and regulation of the training programme. Mr. Shivpal Singh Yadav

addressed the audience about our partnership with Uttar Pradesh and the sustainable livelihood projects like Uttar Pradesh Skill Development Mission (UPSDM) which imparts valuable skill training in various sectors. He appreciated and thanked Don Bosco Te c h f o r i m p l e m e n t i n g s u c h programmes in Etawa district, especially for the rural and needy youth. He said, ”This centre prepares the youth not only for job but also to be a responsible citizen and a good human being”. Don Bosco Tech trainees, who are undergoing training, presented colorful cultural dances which was enjoyable.

The workshop was to know the role and responsibilities of the communication correspondents in Don Bosco Tech, writing reports and taking good p h o t o g r a p h s . Va r i o u s interactive sessions and assignments helped the participants with better understanding and practical knkowldge. Mr. Frahaan (Centre communication correspondent, DON BOSCO Tech, Khagaraiya, Bihar) shared that he gained a lot of knowledge from this workshop on reporting and report writing.

WADRAFNAGAR CENTRE TEAM PARTICIPATES IN SWATCHH BHARAT ABHIYAN It was an experience of teamwork and movement for cleanliness at Don Bosco Tech (Wadrafnagar, Chhattisgarh) on November 29, 2015. Trainers along with the trainees of SDTT project initiated Swach Bharat Abhiyan campaign in and around the Wadrafnagar centre. Swach Bharat Abhiyan also known as Clean India Mission is a national campaign launched by Government of India which was inaugurated by Honorable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi. The event started with the motivational speech by Priyank Trigunayat (Support Domain Trainer, DON BOSCO Tech) and under the leadership of Sandeep Bawali (Electrical Trainer) and Vijay Sonwani (ISMO Trainer). Trainers and trainees together executed the campaign by collecting of plastic and paper wastes, cleaning of sewage line, clearing bush and weeds in and around the centre and colony and cleaning part of the river Kharhara. They also visited neighbouring colonies, bus stand, vegetable market, police station, forest office, etc in an effort to create

awareness about the importance of cleanliness through display of placards like Swachhta Apnao – Desh Bachho, Save our Mother Earth, etc. Residents of the colony appreciated the work of DON BOSCO Tech trainees and the energy and eagerness they exhibited in this cleanliness drive. Trainers and trainees felt proud in participating in this event. After eight hours of hard team work and complete makeover of the centre and colony areas, trainers thanked all the trainees for showing their spirit and devotion to make the event successful.

SECURITY DOMAIN STUDENTS EXPOSED TO LEGAL PROCEDURES BY VISITING TO POLICE STATION It was a day of learning through an exposure visit for the Security Guard domain students of Don Bosco Tech (Hurmutty, Arunachal Pradesh) who are enrolled under Ministry of Minority Affairs (MoMA) project. The exposure visit was organized by Don Bosco Tech (Hurmutty) to the local police station and to Itanagar check gate on November 23, 2015. The resource person on duty was Mr. Kumar Shah (Duty Officer, Hurmutty), who welcomed the students happily. Mr. Shah spoke to the trainees regarding various duties and roles expected in security service. He touched upon importance of discipline, dutifulness and responsibility in the workplace. The trainees also moved around interacting with security personnel on duty in the gate and acquired knowledge about the duty timing and schedule, FIR, handling situations during accidents, theft and robbery, etc. Mr. Kumar Shah while interacting with the students encouraged them to utilize the

opportunity they have now to learn and to earn a livelihood in a respectable manner. He was also impressed with the standard of training that the students exhibited during the visit and interaction. The trainees interacted with the security guards of the factory, regarding their pay, responsibilities and shifts of work. At the end of the day, trainees were excited about the experience and learning through this exposure visit. The direct interaction with the security personnel was found to be motivating and useful for them.
