About DYS School District 210 The Alabama Department of Youth Services School District 210, one of five special school districts in the state, serves students in all Department of Youth Services (DYS) institutional facilities. Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), School District 210 operates under the oversight of a superintendent and an administrative staff to provide support services. The superintendent reports to the Executive Director, who reports to an 18-member board and supervises all officers and employees of DYS. DYS operates three institutional facilities and contracts out community programs. Each facility has an on-site school with full-time teachers and a principal. The three DYS operated facilities are the Mt. Meigs, Vacca, and Autauga Campuses. The Mt. Meigs facility is the most secure and houses older youth. The Vacca facility is a secure facility that provides services to generally younger adolescents, 12-16 years of age. The Autauga facility is an intensive 28-day outdoor adventure based program designed to meet the needs of lower risk youth who do not have extensive involvement in the juvenile justice system. The state facilities and contract programs provide residential placement for an average daily population of 450 youth. All instruction in DYS is individualized either through an Educational Service Plan (ESP) or Individualized Education Program (IEP). Individual plans are written in behavioral terms and based on a variety of factors: age, academic achievement, grade placement, related needs, and transitional goals. Along with their academic instruction, eligible students may participate in business and industry certified career and technical education programs that provide opportunities for students to earn workplace credentials. For long term students in grades nine and above who are functioning academically at or near grade level, counselors verify coursework needed to ensure that appropriate Carnegie units are earned toward graduation. Although DYS schools may graduate students who meet the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) requirements, the local school is encouraged to award the high school diploma. For students who are 17 years or older with adequate basic skills and do not plan to return to high school, the General Education Development (GED) is an option. Students who complete their formal education within DYS are encouraged to continue their education at a postsecondary institution and/or be appropriately prepared to enter the workforce with business and industry credentials upon release.

Application Process

The Alabama Department of Youth Services is seeking an experienced educator with strong leadership skills to lead its unique school district. The superintendent serves as the chief executive officer of the school district and reports directly to the department’s executive director.

This search is being conducted by the Alabama Association of School Boards. All applications will be taken through Frontline, AASB’s online application system, by visiting Applitrack.com/alabamaschoolboards/onlineapp. If this is your first time applying for an AASB-led search via Frontline, you must first create a user account and password. QUALIFICATIONS Alabama law requires the superintendent be chosen for general fitness and character and that he or she be knowledgeable in school administration. The successful applicant must have or be eligible for the appropriate certification to serve as a superintendent in Alabama and must hold at least a master's degree from an accredited four-year college or university. He or she also must: have at least five years’ experience in public school work at the time he or she assumes office; have at least three years’ successful educational experience as a teacher, principal, supervisor, superintendent, educational administrator or instructor in school administration in the last five years; and be knowledgeable in school administration.

SALARY The salary range for this position will be $116,000 $138,000.

Interviews: Superintendent Begins:

A search committee will review all applications and recommend finalists. Finalists will be interviewed by a committee, and the executive director will then recommend one candidate to the DYS school board for approval as superintendent. While the board appoints the superintendent, by state law, the superintendent reports to and serves at the pleasure of the executive director.
