I can hear my child grinding his/her teeth from the other room at night time, is this normal?

COOL SPRINGS: 771-1111

125 Cool Springs Blvd., Ste 140

John T. King Pediatric Dentist

Night time grinding (bruxism) is often a major concern for some parents. This is normally due to the fact that it can be very loud, they may notice a shortened appearance or wear of the teeth and parents don’t understand why their child may be doing it. Bruxism is the forceful contact between the chewing surfaces of the teeth that can occur while awake or asleep. The causes of bruxism can range from emotional stress due to a new environment, changes at school, dreaming, and neurological disabilities, to unbalanced dental occlusion, jaw muscle toning and pressure in the inner ear while laying down. The majority of cases in the primary (baby teeth) and mixed (some baby teeth and some adult teeth) dentitions do not require any treatment. It is a self-limiting condition that usually does not progress to adult bruxism. Reported complications include dental wear in the primary dentition, along with headaches soreness of the jaw muscles and TMJ dysfunction in the adult dentition. If grinding continues into the adult dentition, a night guard may be needed.

What is topical fluoride and why is it necessary?

A:

Topical fluoride is fluoride that is available in a gel, foam or varnish that is applied directly to the teeth by a hygienist or dentist in the dental office. Fluoride is a naturally occurring element that can be found in some foods and water supplies. When a fluoride source is applied directly to the tooth surface, it can help to remineralize enamel and make enamel stronger, it can repair the early stages of tooth decay, it can prevent decalcification (white scars) of the teeth, and it can alter the mouth’s bacterial metabolism to help prevent cavities. A professional application of topical fluoride should be given at least every 6 months for children with a very low to moderate caries risk. Those with a high caries risk should receive the application at a greater frequency.

edit note “speak nicely ... and don’t twiddle your fingers all the time.

T

he Red Queen in Lewis Carroll’s magnificent classic, Alice in Wonderland admonishes Alice with the words, “Look up, speak nicely and don’t twiddle your fingers all the time. And the ancient proverb, “Children should be seen and not heard, gives children another slap on the wrist. It’s true that children can be annoying sometimes, that we get tired of them when WE get tired, that nerves can get edgy and patience worn thin. But ... and you know I always have one of those. I think children should be both seen and heard and sometimes, especially if it’s terribly hard for them, it’s OK to twiddle the fingers while talking. In the past five years I have watched kids go silent as they’ve moved from not having a cell phone to having a cell phone. They ARE talking, just not out loud. Once you give them phones you start silencing them in increments, because they’re so busy “talking to friends they are silent when it comes to you. Back to talking. Years ago a dear friend came to dinner when my daughter was little. My little girl was shy in the presence of our friends. Well, you WANT your kids to speak up when spoken to. And sometimes you have to tell them to answer. You want them to know how to converse, hold a steady gaze with confidence, be respectful to your friends, even impress them! My daughter was 5, so it wasn’t a big deal that she wouldn’t speak any replies to my friend’s promptings, but then my clever friend said in a kind way and with a nice smile, “Do you speak? My daughter smiled sweetly then replied with a giggle, “Yes, I do. Going out to dinner I see kids on iPads in restaurants, not participating in dinner conversations. I see them at Predator’s games on devices, too. So I’ve got to wonder, who is speaking to these children or teaching them how to be a part of social moments without their little machines? Do you see what’s happening? Instead of

10 march 2014

bringing a child along to be a part of what’s happening, they are being given a “do-what-you-want pass. Probably so Mom and Dad can do what THEY want without being annoyed by their child. The old children “should be seen and not heard. So when will the kids learn to talk and look into the eyes? It’s possible that they won’t. You only get a certain number of years to get your kids to grow into interesting conversationalists — that sounds really, really old-fashioned, right? So many parents now think it’s OK to give kids a “pass. By the time that group of children arrives into adulthood it will be a very quiet day. I’m tired of seeing it and tired of saying it, and I know a bunch of you are tired of reading it from me. But if I don’t say it, who will? I recently visited a private school in Nashville (won’t tell you which!) and took a tour. As we walked from class to class a couple of kids from the class would greet us and tell us what they were working on that day. This was unbelieveably impressive. Starting at an early age the kids in this school have to learn to talk to others and use public speaking to get beyond their nerves about it. There’s nothing like this in public schools, nothing like it in homes, but it made me go home determined to draw my kids out, encourage them to speak up and bounce the conversation ball back. Shouldn’t we all be doing that instead of tuning each other out? Turn to page 37 to get the ball rolling with your preschoolers.

POST of the Month: ON DENTIST VISITS FOR 1-YEAR-OLDS THE POST: “Let’s be honest: Do you REALLY take your child to the dentist when he turns 1? I didn’t. Not sayin’ that’s right, it’s just that if I manage to clean my baby’s mouth and brush the teeth he has up to age 3 and THEN take him in is that OK or am I a bad mom?

THE RESPONSES: “Mine went at 1 ... insurance covered it so I figured why not?” Karin Gustafson Surratt “My dentist didn’t want to see my child until he was 3!” Kristina Pennington “I took my baby boy at 6 months because he had enough teeth and I wanted to make sure everything was OK. Guess it was more for myself ... paranoid! Lol.” Metta Sysonexay Savoy “I was just reading about that. My pediatrician said to wait and I agree.” Jennifer Coke Spence “All three of mine started at 1 year old.” Mindy Dallas Walters

Apostrophe Oops Dear Editor, I bet you’ve already gotten messages about this from brave souls who risk being referred to as “grammar Nazi,” or mocked for being so picky or sensitive,

14 march 2014

but I feel like it just must be said ... “Uniquely Your’s, Valentine?” Come on, guys. It’s the biggest font on two pages. Were you sleeping when this was submitted? Your’s? I dare to be snapped at about expecting too much, because I do expect a lot. You’re a great and informative resource; bust out that red pen and end the apostrophe abuse! Melissa

Device Obsession, Thank You Dear Editor, I want to applaud you for your Editor’s Note in January’s publication about our obsession with our devices and the way they are overshadowing our relationships. What you wrote literally made me cheer, as I feel so similarly ... so strongly. I ain’t drinking the Kool-Aid either! Sometimes I feel like the only one who is alarmed. Your column made me not feel so alone in these views! Thank you. It was good to hear you express your reservations and serious concerns about screen time. You’re correct in highlighting that most people ignore or justify their technology overuse as “embracing technology,” while ignoring the American Academy of Pediatrics warnings in regards to limiting screen time. This technological tidal wave has us as a society on a wild ride. Fun, yet freaky. Where will it lead to? What kind of people will we become as we use our devices constantly and our devices use us?

Your candor, concern and caution are a welcome voice here in Nashville. I know the experts are speaking out, yet it is comforting to hear a Mom also shout out her reservations. I do hope you are heard and heeded in this day and age we live in. My four children, ages 10 and under, have such minimal screen time, that I get flack for it at times. People warn that I am not preparing them for “the real world.” My philosophy is this: they have the rest of their lives to learn it all. Right now, I want them to be kids. On my fridge is a quote from Albert Einstein, it reads, “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.” My hope is to give my children a foundation for life that is filled with nature, crafts, theater, play with one another and quality books that evoke their minds to see beauty. I hope that with this foundation, they will create beauty. The kind of beauty that comes from minds that are not dulled by passively watching, or obsessively interacting with, a screen ... and the virtual voyeuristic world it presents. Now, I know that this takes sacrifice. It is HARD! Having three young boys and a rambunctious girl makes for a noisy, crazy home life. It is a challenge to keep them happily occupied in real-life, messy activities. Yet, it is so worth it! I see my children growing in their love for each other as they play together. I see my daughter come up

with homemade books, dolls, clothes, etc. every day. I hear beautiful music as they compose new musical pieces on the piano, just for fun. I enjoy their ability to identify the birds outside our windows at the feeders. There are many creative and relational blessings to experience when one chooses to resist the virtual world of technology’s temptations and to tune in to real life! Lisa Boehm

Common Core Dear Editor, My fourth grader has been exposed to CC since first grade. She struggles with math every day, hates going to school and feels demoralized because she has so much homework to do every night. I had to hire a tutor to help her keep up the pace. This is not a what I consider a good teaching method. Karen Little

Daydream Note Dear Editor, Daydream believer (Editor’s Note, Feb., 2014): I don’t believe it’s not a matter of lack of imagination. Many people take one look at physical objects and imagine how things could be better — paint the sofa, re-upholster the sofa, etc. Reading is important because it’s one of a diversity of ways to learn about something. Neither reading all books nor watching all movies is ideal — strive for a good mixture of many things. Todd Liebergen

Decoding Baby’s Cries.

Follow us on facebook.com/ NashvilleParentMag to post in our daily discussions on raising kids.

Can you really understand what your baby tells you by just the sound of his cries? My husband could, but not me. My husband could tell the difference with both of our kids. I never developed the skill but could make an educated guess based on the clock. Rachel Clarke

A cry for food or from pain ... those I can tell. I can just tell the different between “I have a need” and “I’m in pain.” I usually know what the need is because of the time of day ... time for a meal, nap or diaper change. Jamie Rideout

Too a while to learn the first time. With my first it took a very long time ... probably six months before I could. But by my third child, I could right away. Erin Funderburk

Of course! By following the Dunstan Method. Absolutely! We followed the Dunstan Method after seeing it during an Oprah show. Fairly certain my husband thought I was crazy at first, but it worked. I think it (along with the fact that we spoke to her constantly) contributed to her talking early. It’s important for those connections to be fostered to build strong synaptic connections and behavioral ones as well. Stacee Ray Roehler

Depends on what’s going on. For me, even with an older child, it’s as much the context as it is the sound. Fall down go boom equals one cry; fall down go BAM equals a totally different cry. Rowena Soriano Gonzalez Aldridge

I just knew. I knew my babies’ cries. Pain, hungry or upset because of diaper. Rachel Pegram Starr

I could have a conversation based on cries alone! I knew. LOL. I know hungry, poop, tired, pee, wanting attention, startled (which is actually different from scared) hurt, thirsty/hungry, frustrated and “I just wanna be held.” Haha. I could basically have a conversation with my kids with just cries. Channing Perry

I know the cry for attention, but other than that ... just guessing.

t was easy with my first child the second one was harder to decode.

The only cry that I know is the one for attention ... no tears and she’s forcing the sound and trying to make the crying face. Other than that it’s a guessing game for me, too.

Within a few days of having our firstborn, I was able to tell by his cries what he needed. Our second child was completely different and I’m still having a hard time understanding her.

On-the-Go Eating. Driving along, the kids are hungry but you’re not home yet. Do you allow them to eat in your car? Plenty of soon-to-be moms say they’ll never allow it. We say no, but never stick to it.

They’ll be quiet while they eat.

As long as you pick up your trash.

Every time we get a new car or clean ours out really good we always say no more food in the car, but it never lasts! Most of the time it’s because we travel and I’m not about to stop my eight-hour trip so we can stop and have a snack. We have given up fast food and soda though.

If kids are hungry ... you feed them. If we’re in the car when they get hungry, then they eat in my car. No problem for us. They’re quiet while they’re chewing, so it’s a winwin for all.

We all say a lot of things will go a certain way with our “future” children. Then we actually have them and things completely change. Pick up your trash and things will be OK.

Samantha Downing

Bring a snack and clean up after. I always bring a snack and drink for the kiddos when we will be out and about or on long trips. Other than that I don’t. We have a portable hand held vacuum that plugs into our car that we keep in the back of it; messes are not a big deal for us. Nothing baby wipes or a vacuum can’t fix. Trisha Glowniak

Sheila Wolfe

If we didn’t eat in the car, we wouldn’t get to eat. Hahaha. During the junior high/high school years with my older kids, between scouts, track, baseball, cheerleading practice, marching band, student government, etc., if we hadn’t eaten in the car we wouldn’t have eaten. Amy Woehler Baker

Samantha Nicole Frye

When you’re in the car a lot, sometimes a snack is just the thing to keep everyone happy. Oh the pre-baby, pre-multiple kids logic. Trying to apply what you expect of adults onto kids NEVER works. Wait till the first time you hear “I’m hungry” 20 times in a row ... drive thru anyone? Motherhood is LITERALLY the Mother of Necessity. I said I’d never drive a mini-van either and now I’m annoyed if we have to take my husband’s car somewhere — where are we gonna put their stuff and with baby number three on the way it’s just not going to be an option much longer. for asthmatic kids, learning to control flare-up symptoms on the playing field is key.

A

diagnosis of asthma in your child can be frightening and confusing for you but don’t think your child has to cut back on his sports’ activities, local experts say. “Children with asthma, just like any other child, need to exercise and play to remain healthy,” says Susan Langone, M.D., with Nurture Pediatrics in Smyrna. Don’t think for a minute that your child needs to simply sit around. “As a general rule, parents should never limit their childrens’ activity, particularly in this age of electronic devices and the rising rates of childhood obesity,” says Saagar Karlekar, M.D. of Hendersonville Children’s Clinic. Even many world class athletes are asthmatic, so as long as you keep your child’s doctor in the loop he’ll be able to manage his asthma on and off the playing

field by recognizing his symptoms. “As long as you keep me updated on your child’s activity and environment, there’s no reason why he can’t do anything he wants,” says Karlekar.

Exercise as a Trigger It’s true that some types of asthma can be made worse by exercise, so if that’s the case with your child, preventative measures before a game may be taken. “Children can sometimes use their inhaler 15 minutes before exercising to prevent asthma symptoms,” Langone says. If exercise triggers their asthma during a game, kids should be able to identify that they need to use the inhalers. “Some signs may be more obvious,”says Karlekar. “Cough is a commonly missed sign. I see a number of patients who have been diagnosed with bronchitis repeatedly but many of them actually have uncontrolled asthma,” he says. “Decreased athletic perfor-

Felting a Shamrock This craft is for older kids with help from Mom or Dad. But, the ending result will be great — a cool new craft and bonding time! You can use this shamrock on pins, hair clips, etc. What You’ll Need Green Felt Hot Glue Scissors

What You’ll Do • Cut out a tiny shamrock from the felt with elongated leaves. • Hot glue that shamrock down onto a piece of square green felt that has about half and inch border around the tiny shamrock. • Then, carefully outline the shamrock with hot glue.

• Quickly, lay another square piece of green felt down on top of that and press the two pieces together. Be sure to press your finger around the edge of the middle layer (the tiny shamrock) creating an indented outline of the shamrock, then cut the square down to the shamrock shape.

Fuzzy Clovers If you can’t find a real four-leaf clover, make one! These are easy, but they do require the help of an adult. What You’ll Need Fuzzy little balls Hot glue Craft sticks

• Parents, put a one-inch strip of hot glue down the center of a craft stick starting from the top. • Allow the children to carefully place a fuzzy ball onto the hot glue and press it down. You can do one at a time, two at a time or even all four at once. • After you’re done making as many as you can, you can stick them in the ground in your garden or write a message on them and hand them out to friends as a special good luck wish.

Visit us at nashvilleparent.com for more fun Kid Crafts and find Kiera’s hand-picked St. Patrick’s Day crafts on pinterest.com/nashvilleparent.

What You’ll Do • As your hot glue is heating up, have your child sort the fuzzy colored balls and craft sticks into matching colors.

T

A local high school student assists children with a science project through the Youth CR3W program at Adventure Science Center.

eens can better prepare for college and the working world through a decades-old youth development program that Adventure Science Center (ASC) has brought back to life. Youth CR3W — pronounced “crew” (the 3 stands for three Es: engage, explore and explain) — is a program in which students apply as high school freshmen and commit to it for four years. They come in once a week after school for two or three hours to fulfill their hourly commitment of 150 - 250 hours per year. “Students engage guests while explaining exhibits, and they also explore their own career interests,” says John Hawkins, Youth CR3W program manager. Students’ responsibilities grow and change as they progress through the program each year. Another point of the program is “to establish a work schedule and stick to it,” says Hawkins, adding, “It’s less about the number of hours and more about the personal responsibility of coming in and doing it.” ASC seeks students from all economic backgrounds, and the application process is typical of a regular job interview, requiring letters of recommendation. The application period takes place at the beginning of fall, and there are only 15 opening for incoming freshmen. Learn more about the program at adventuresci.org.

our child on the cover of our magazine? Maybe! Cover Kids 2014, the all-online contest that gives your child a shot at the cover, is underway. One child in each of four age categories — 0 - 12 months, 13 - 35 months, 3 - 6 years and 7 - 10 years — will be selected to appear on a cover of this publication. In addition, our editors will select a fifth “wild card winner” from one of the age groups. Here’s how it works: Through Tuesday, April 15, upload your child’s photo (you can do it from your smartphone!) at nashvilleparent. com/coverkids (a $20 nonrefundable submission fee applies, a portion of which goes to the local Cystic Fibrosis Foundation). After the submission period ends, Nashville Parent’s editors will select 10 finalists in each group. Once finalists are announced, public voting begins — have your friends and family go online and vote for your child (one vote per person per age category). At the end of the two-week voting period, the child who garners the most votes in each age category will be the Cover Kid for his group, guaranteeing him a magazine cover! hen Kelsey Bridges’ baby, Maddy, turns 6 months old in June, she’s throwing her a proper birthday party to celebrate her half year. “Maddy’s the second of my kids to be born in December,” Bridges laughs. “With all the craziness that the holidays bring, I know trying to get that together will be crazy, so I’m thinking ahead.” irthdays happening at difficult times may be just one of the reasons why there’s a new trend going around where parents are throwing half birthdays for their babies. It’s all over Pinterest, and new moms looking for fun ways to plan get-togethers with their friends with babies are taking notice. So far the trend seems to be for babies only, but should it stick, you may start seeing it seep into older kids’ lives — especially if they’re away from home for sporting events or other things on their special days. “I love being with people, and I want Maddy to love it, too,” Bridges says. “So, why not? We’ll have a fun little get-together and celebrate her life ... in December we’ll let her try some vanilla ice cream.” Some parents aren’t on board with the new idea. “Oh. come on!” says Ann Cascio, a Nashville mom of two. “It’s over the top. I really have no interest in stressing myself out over something like half birthdays — really?” She doesn’t have to worry. So far the trend seems to be limited to 6-month-olds. Pinterest boards show adorable half birthday cakes and ideas for “half” themes ... never mind that babies younger than 1 year aren’t supposed to have cake — the treats are for the mom friends and other guests to enjoy.

A Good Reason Why “I’m looking for a way to make time with my baby count,” says new mom Shelly Hatry of Fairview. “I saw a Pinterest board about half birthday parties and I thought, perfect. You don’t have to like it, but for me it always helps to have a reason for a get-together and my baby is growing and changing so fast,” she adds. That’s true. Typical babies grow astonishingly fast in their first year. y the time they’re 1, they’ve tripled their birth weight and grow up to 10 inches in length— of course, the timing of growth varies baby to baby. A child grows more rapidly during his first months than in any other period of his life,” says Gregory Plemmons, M.D., medical director of the pediatric primary-care practice at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital. “My granny keeps telling me it all goes so fast,” Hatry says. “So, OK, I hear it. I’ll tease her with it, too!”

Easy & Stress Free Where throwing kid parties can be anxiety producing, with a baby’s half year party it shouldn’t be. There’s no need for games or activities beyond having your friends over with their babies and letting the little ones enjoy being around each other and the adults, too. Keep it friendly, low key and just have a fun time together. “I think it’s important for children to grow up with each other, to be socialized as much as possible so they’ll learn to talk and speak up for themselves. This is just a fun way to get that started,” says Bridges. Not convinced? You don’t have to be. But for the moms out there who love the idea, happy half birthday parties to you all!

S

ometimes if your tot isn’t much of a talker, you can start to worry — especially when you meet a more verbal child. Suddenly you think you need to catch him up! But don’t worry. Not all of us are gregarious talker types. “Language acquisition is birthed through face-to-face interactions, and by engaging your child in everyday activities and experiences,” says speech-language pathologist Amy Nelson. So you CAN increase your child’s aptitude for verbosity if you choose. Here are 10 simple suggestions for how to build your toddler’s vocabulary and inspire him to use his words:

1

Associate through reading. “Create an interactive experience by making books come alive for your child,” says Roberta Michnick Golinkoff, Ph.D., educator and three-time author on this subject. “When you are reading together, pick up on your child’s interests then relate the content of the book to his life. If there’s a picture of a dog, say, ‘That’s like Grandma’s dog. Where else have you seen a dog?’ That way he’ll link what he sees in the book to his own experiences.” Don’t rush to get back to the book if he’s talking — let him talk!

2

Incorporate vocabulary. “Choose books that

have bright colors, simple pictures and short phrases or sentences,” says Nelson. “Give your child the opportunity to label and repeat words. Also use what speech-language pathologists call ‘expansion.’ If your child says, ‘Cat,’ you can say, ‘big cat’ or ‘sleeping cat’ by adding an adjective or verb to increase his length of utterance.”

3

Encourage repetition. “Children often have a favorite book they want to hear time and again, and that’s OK,” says Golinkoff. “Repeated readings build a toddler’s vocabulary and story structure understanding.” Amy Vitsorek found this to be true. “Right now my 2-and-a-halfyear-old Maggie is into princesses, so every day she carries around a suitcase that has four princess books in it. She’s memorized the storyline and tells it in her own words by looking at the pictures. Then she’ll ask me to read it to her,” she says.

4

6

Talk “Up.”

With babies it was nice to use “babyese,” or a sing-songie voice to soothe the child, but now, as a preschooler, drop the falsetto voice and be real. Speak in sentences without altering your own vocabulary so your child can ask you what you mean. Learning vocabulary is a life-long endeavor that never quits so keep words growing.

7

Tinker with toys. All kids will start talking when they’re involved in a fun activity. Get down on the floor and play with your child with a toy he loves. Let him lead the way. Ask, “What are we playing?” and let him be the leader on the activity even if it takes forever. he point is don’t tak over and fill in the blanks. et him talk!

8

Interactive games. “I use interactive games such as ‘This Little Piggy’ and ‘Humpty Dumpty’ to build Maggie’s vocabulary,” says Vitsorek. “I’ll stop and leave off a word so she can fill it in. hen we’re driving in the car we also play I py’ with colors. As a result, she knows all of her colors.”

9

Narrate routines. “Encouraging talk during our daily routines has been a great way to expand Conner’s vocabulary,” says Jackson. “When he’s getting dressed I’ll say, ‘I’m putting on your pants . . . your shirt . . . your shoes.’ He’s already starting to repeat those words. He’ll say, ‘Sock?’ And I’ll say, “Yes, that’s your sock.’”

10

Review and retell. “Before going to bed, rehash the day’s activities to cement vocabulary your child used during the day,” says Golinkoff. “Or encourage him to recount his experiences to another adult with your assistance.” Ask him about funny words, new words and words he knows. Denise Morrison Yearian is a former parenting magazine editor and the mother of three children.

Vocab Takeaway

Visit venues. “Take trips to venues that have programs

specifically designed for children says elson. hildren’s museums have a variety of exhibits so toddlers can learn words about opposites such as wet and dry, big and little, up and down. If you go to other sites such as natural history or art museums, scale it down to your child’s level. ocus on vocabulary and point out the animals flowers, shapes and colors you see.” “Last year when we took Conner to the zoo, I pointed out different animals such as an elephant and talked about its big ears and long nose,” says Danielle Jackson of her now 22-month-old. “Later if we saw an animal on TV or in a book, I’d remind him of our trip and encourage him to say its name and make the animal sound.” Also encourage him to talk about his trips with others.

5

Out and about. “When you take walks, point out different things and bring back leaves, rocks and sticks so you and your child can count, sort and explore more,” says Golinkoff.

WHO AM I?

exploring a kid’s self 10 activities to help your child feel secure confident and self-aware

40

COMPI L ED B Y SUSAN DAY

Research shows that “self” is learned, not inherited, and that it’s vital to know who you are in order to value yourself. Your kids (and you!) can benefit from these 10 activities from the book, 100 Ways to Enhance Self-Concept in the Classroom by Jack Canfield and Harold C. Wells. The book is intended for both teachers at school and parents at home and can be used with different ages.

1. The Journal

4. Pride Line

7. Who are We?

Give your child a blank book so he can put personal thoughts and feelings in it. Encourage him to write autobiographical content by giving him prompts like: “10 words that best describe me” or “10 words that best describe each member of my family.” Have him provide answers to the following: My best friend, favorite TV show, books I like, what I like to do best and so forth.

Our culture doesn’t encourage boasting, yet pride is related to self-concept ... so ask your child to make a statement about a specific area of his behavior he’s proud about such as, “I am proud that I ...” Give him suggestions if he’s having trouble pinpointing something: perhaps something he did for a friend or parent, work in school, habits he has, something he’s tried hard for, etc.

Around your dinner table or during a relaxed moment, start a discussion with your kids asking, “Who are we?” When everyone looks at you funny, say, “Well, how would you answer that question if a martian were to ask that of us right now?”

2. My Time Line

5. Success a Day

Have your child draw a horizontal line in the center of a large piece of poster paper in pencil. Beginning at the left (with “my birth”), work along the line with your child to add important dates with vertical markings such as learning to walk, starting preK, starting school, getting glasses, joining Scouts, losing pets, new siblings being born, joining sports, trips he’s taken, etc. You can also do this in a crafty way by writing items on index cards and stringing them on yarn for display. Discuss as you go!

At the end of your child’s day, have him share with the rest of the family the successes he experienced during that day. It may be difficult at first. A variation is for your child to identify something he learned that day. Without recall, kids don’t realize all that they are accomplishing. You can also have your child write his successes down in his journal each day to build writing skills.

3. Magic Box This simple but revealing activity can have lasting effects: You construct a “magic box” — it can be any kind of box only it needs to have a mirror placed at the bottom to reflect who looks inside. Ask your child, “Who do you think the most special person in the whole world is?” After allowing your child to answer, have him look in the box. Be ready with comments: “Are you surprised?” Discuss individual uniqueness.

6. Positive Mantra “No matter what you say or do to me, I’m still a worthwhile person!” Ask your child to close his eyes and repeat that sentence in unison with you: “No matter what you say or do to me, I’m still a worthwhile person!” This simple exercise (as old fashioned as it sounds) implants a new seed of thought into kids and gives them a way to handle the negative things that happen to them. Have them exaggerate saying it so it comes out strongly and convincingly, and teach them to use it when something or someone tries to get them down.

8. Who’s Who? Ask your child to create a “Who’s Who in My Life” paper. Going through family and friends, list each person and write down for each: achievements, hobbies, pets, future dreams, favorite activities, favorite food, etc. Since we learn through experiences and experiencing, knowing others helps us to know where we fit into the picture.

9. Fingerprints Everyone is unique and different in many ways — one of which is our fingerprints. Get an ink pad and fingerprint each member of your family. You can get the best prints by rolling the finger from left to right without squeezing too hard. Use a magnifying glass to compare each other’s prints. This little exercise reinforces your child’s uniqueness.

10. Family Tree Help your child understand and appreciate where he’s from. Teach your child what a family tree is and draw one on a piece of paper as best you can. Together, over time, seek out information from relatives to fill out the branches of the tree. See how far you can go and add pictures, too.

Affordable Family Fitness

A

ccording to statisticbrain.com, the national average for a gym membership is $55 per month. That’s more than $600 per year. But if you want to spend some time together as a family, and get exercise at the same time, there are cheaper alternatives.

Walk/Run If you are paying $600 a year on running shoes, something is wrong. You can purchase a good pair of shoes that will last at least six months for around $100. Put them babies on your feet and you are good to go around the block or over trails. If the weather is bad, check with your local mall to see if they open early for walkers. Nothing encourages the teenage track star like having Mom or Dad run with him.

Ride a Bicycle If you need to save the wear and tear on your vertebrae, ride a bicycle. A good bike can last you the rest of your life. Okay, so you might need to spend that $600 to get one, but that is only the first year for a lifetime investment. Don’t forget the helmet. Setting that example for your kids is important. Also, when riding together as a family, remember to review safety rules before you begin.

Swimming If you live in a condominium or apartment complex, or own your own pool, you can swim for free. Swimming is one form of exercise that provides an aerobic workout and stretches muscles at the same time. Differing your strokes can work different muscle groups, too. If you have to go to the public pool, purchasing a family pass for the summer will make it more affordable.

Roller skating At the roller rink near my house, adults pay no general admission. That means if I own my own skates, I can skate all I want for free. The next closest rink charges $2 during the week, and $5 or $6 on the weekend, depending which night you want to go. Even if you pay for the kids, it is an evening of exercise and family fun all in one.

Mix it up Everyone knows how important it is to vary your workout so that you work different parts of your body. What better way than to mix up your exercise (and family fun) routine. Ride bikes on Monday, run together on Tuesday, visit the roller rink on Wednesday, etc. This type of routine gives you the flexibility you might find at the gym so that you don’t get bored with your workout. The kids? They’ll just think you’re having fun. — Carol Alexander
