Give Back, Deliberately
T
here’s no better time for sharing your kindness than in December. It’s the month of giving, the month of family bonding, the month of wearing yourself out practically to the very bone come Christmas Eve. So ... herewith ... a few recommendations for getting through this hectic month unscathed and merry. This will come from deliberately being kind — and it will go a long way with the kids. Quick note: Acts of kindness should always be done without expecting a thing in return! I hope you all have a most wondrous holiday season! • When you’re out and about, compliment a mom on how well-behaved her child is. Or the dad. • If you find yourself around kids talking about other kids (future gossipers!), be the one who interjects something nice about that person. • Put your cell phone away if the kids are around. • Hold the door for a parent pushing a baby stroller. • Let someone at the grocery store go ahead of you if he only has one or two items and lines are long. • Buy a Starbucks for the person behind you. • Compliment your child in front of other kids. • Go through your kids’ toys and clothes (with them!) and donate to charity. • Put money in the Salvation Army bucket. • Fulfill an Angel Tree request. • Donate to Toys for Tots. • Sign up your family for a volunteering opportunity. • Make your family’s favorite meal. • Play your child’s favorite video game with him. • Play a board game with your kids. • Say, “Good morning” to co-workers with a smile. • Bake several batches of cinnamon loaf, wrap in seasonal cellophane, tag and leave on friends’ doorknobs in a gift bag. • Make a homemade gift, themed to what the receiver likes. • Donate outgrown clothes. • Share unlimited read-aloud time with your kids. • Hug your friends in greeting (you make the first move). • Leave a quarter on top of a gumball machine. • Call your elderly neighbor to see if there’s anything she needs. • Send a military care package. • Write thank-you notes. • Make a craft with your kids, or at least, sit down and color with them!

n old theater finds a new home as The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati (TCTC) — the country’s oldest theater for young audiences — packs up and heads to their newly expanded space in Hyde Park. The theater group will be fully moved in for the coming new year. The $6.5-million dollar project began construction in June, revamping a large Red Bank Road space for a 150-seat theatre, vocal music and dance-specific studios, a costume shop and expanded rehearsal space for both MainStage productions and the popular ArtReach touring shows. With approximately 30,000 square feet at their disposal, the list of classes TCTC typically offers is expanding. Sudio spaces allow TCTC to hold performing arts instruction for 1,800 students in a single, 12-week session. The new facility will also give staff the opportunity to create programming for preschoolers through high schoolers. With more class options, more kids will get a chance to study the arts and participate in activities that help develop confidence, teamwork and leadership skills. “Potential for programming in our new theatre is unlimited,” says Kim Deaton, managing director of TCTC and CEO. “Our plan is to create smaller, longer-run productions for audiences outside of our

current scope (in the 150-seat theater), such as preschool, high school and young adults.” TCTC’s MainStage performances will continue in downtown’s historic Taft Theatre. “The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati is a unique model in that our MainStage productions run in a 2,200-seat house over a period of 10 days,” Deaton says. “This model has served us well and generates nearly half of our entire annual revenue. However, other successful children’s theatres tend to have smaller theatres that run productions over a much longer period of time.” Deaton refers to the Minneapolis Children’s Theatre (MCT) — TCTC researched and followed that model. “Our new facility will allow us to replicate this very successful model, while retaining our current model of Broadway quality, blockbuster and world-premiere musicals at the Taft,” Deaton adds. TCTC’s touring division will hold performances in the new space for home schools and the general public. The first session of classes to be held in TCTC’s new home begins Jan. 10, 2016, and registration is now open for ages 3 through 15 in classes like Creative Toddling, Drama Workshop,

One little drink can’t hurt the baby, right? The American Academy of Pediatrics says think twice.
T
here you are, comfy on the couch, humming a holiday tune with a plate of pretty treats on your belly. Someone offers you a glass of wine to join in the merriment. Reaching for the glass, your mind wonders if you should or not. Is one little glass going to do any real harm? Actually, The American Academy of Pediatrics (aap.org) recently announced that no amount of alcohol is considered “safe” to consume when pregnant — a claim made on the heels of a report stating “prenatal exposure to alcohol [is] the leading preventable cause of birth defects and intellectual and neurodevelopmental disabilities in children.” So really, you shouldn’t.
Hard Facts “Alcohol use during pregnancy is the most common cause of mental retardation,” says Dr. Ronald Hirth of Hilltop Obstetrics and Gynecology. “Other effects include low birth weight, congenital facial deformities, impaired behavioral and intellectual disorders, miscarriage and stillbirth.” And while Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) has a specific set of birth defects, Hirth says, doctors have discovered a spectrum of disorders. “These are called fetal alcohol spectrum disorders and include intellectual, behavioral and neuro-

developmental disabilities that are lifelong and irreversible.” But wait a minute. Haven’t women been told for years that a glass of wine once in a while won’t cause any harm? The sticky point is how to define “once in a while.” For some, “once in a while” may be a glass of wine or a beer once or twice a year. For others, “once in a while” might mean a few drinks in a month, or week. And if doctors can’t determine with certainty an allowable amount of alcohol, it stands to reason they also can’t determine the tipping point at which “one more drink” becomes too much. According to Hirth, the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) have long advised that when it comes to alcohol and pregnancy, abstinence is best. The AAP, he says, has simply joined other medical organizations that advocate complete avoidance of alcohol when expecting. “The problem is actually in the metabolism of alcohol,” says Hirth. “You have to remember that the desirable effects of alcohol (decreasing anxiety and inhibitions) occur because it is a toxin. When consumed, your liver will break down the alcohol into harmless by-products to be excreted. This process is not uniform and each individual’s metabolism of alcohol varies wildly. Once you ‘feel’ the effects of alcohol, it has already been in a high enough concentration to

do damage to a developing fetus. Because we do not know the threshold at which this damage occurs, the best advice is to avoid it all together.”
But, I Didn’t Know! What about those first few weeks of partying when you didn’t know you were pregnant? “For women who find out they are pregnant and realize they have been drinking early in the pregnancy, we have a discussion about the possibility of birth defects and continue from there,” says Hirth. “However, many pregnancies are planned. If you are planning a pregnancy, I recommend avoiding moderate use of alcohol.” So you may want to reconsider that glass of champagne on New Year’s Eve, even if others say it won’t do you — or your baby — any harm. “Once the public conscience has accepted a piece of medical advice as truth, it is very hard to change,” says Hirth. “It doesn’t help that medical research seems to be erratic on many subjects, often declaring some substances good then bad then good again. However, when it comes to alcohol during pregnancy, medical research has gone in one direction over the past few decades and that is recommending less and less, and for quite some time now, none at all.”

A CHRISTMAS CAROL
T
his year marks 25 years of Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park’s production of Charles Dickens’ iconic A Christmas Carol. The cast features a mix of new and familiar performers, including a few young actors, Nathan Goodlett, Livvy Stubenrauch and Ethan Verderber, considered veterans of the stage, locally. We asked the three youngsters what they loved most about playing in A Christmas Carol. Nathan Goodlett: 2015 is Goodlett’s second appearance in the roles of George, Charles, Apprentice at Fezziwig’s, and Streets. Participating in the production is his way of readying for the holidays:
“When I perform A Christmas Carol, it really helps me get into the spirit of Christmas,” he says. “With all the elaborate sets and props you really feel like you’re in that setting of whatever adventure your character is on.” Livvy Stubenrauch: Stubenrauch returns to the production for a second year as Fan, Guest at Fezziwig’s, and Streets. “A Christmas Carol is extra special; it brings families together for the holidays. It’s become a local tradition and it’s so cool to be a part of that tradition.” Ethan Verderber: Appears
as Peter Cratchit, Gregory, Apprentice at Fezziwig’s, and Streets and he joins the cast for a fourth season. “I love theatre because I get to express myself,” says the sixth grader. “And being in A Christmas Carol is so special because it is always the same story, yet different every single year.” A Christmas Carol is on stage now through Dec. 30 at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park (962 Mt. EXPERIENCE: Behringer-Crawford Museum By Amanda Ciani The Behringer-Crawford Museum is a gem nestled atop of Devou Mountain. Historic artifacts and interactive exhibits make this museum a must see for kids of all ages! My 2-year-old son and I attended “Tot Tuesday” at BehringerCrawford recently, and it was a lot of fun! Offered every third Tuesday of the month, each class features books and a craft highlighting a specific theme. During our visit, we passed some super cool train displays on our way in, but the rest was all about scarecrows. Enthusiastic volunteers led story time, asking kids questions about the book and also about their lives. The crafts are age-appropriate for toddlers and can even be taken home. We magically made it to snack time during our visit and enjoyed some tasty treats before we explored the museum — and headed back to the train displays! The museum itself is a marvel to explore. Why Flu Vaccines? Now that kids are back in school, we are reminded of many things typical of this time of year – parent-teacher meetings, sporting events and extracurricular activities. This time of year should also serve as an important reminder that flu season is just around the corner.
