AUTUMN 2015

COWLEY WERE ANNOUNCED AS RADIO CITY TALK’S SCHOOL OF THE WEEK ON FRIDAY 27TH NOVEMBER!

FORMER STUDENT ACHIEVES COVETED THEATRE AWARD FORMER Cowley student, David Moorst, took his place alongside some of the world’s biggest stars on stage and screen after winning the Evening Standard Emerging Talent award for a role on London’s theatre circuit. The star-studded awards ceremony at the Old Vic theatre was presented by Rob Brydon and co-hosted by Dame Judi Dench and Sir Ian McKellen. The event was attended by Hollywood royalty including: Nicole Kidman, James McAvoy, acting legend Vanessa Redgrave and composer Stephen Sondheim. David, 23, was awarded for his role in Violence and Son at the Royal Court, a play about his character’s turbulent relationship with his violent father. Early in November, David showed his true inspirational Cowleian characteristics by leading an acting workshop for aspiring actors at Cowley Sixth Form. Mr Sheeran said: “We are thrilled to hear about David’s magnificent achievement. During his time at Cowley, he was a very popular and diligent student who showed exceptional talent in the roles he performed in our theatre performances. “I, along with David’s mum, Pam, who is the office manager for our 11 to 16 site and the whole of the Cowley community, send our heartfelt congratulations to David on his fantastic success and wish him all the very best for his part as Jack in the play ‘Into the Woods’ that’s being performed at the Royal Exchange next month.”

COWLEY LEADS THE WAY IN THE 2015 ST HELENS REPORTER EDUCATION AWARDS COWLEY International College has been nominated in five categories for this year’s St Helens Reporter Education awards. The College worked incredibly hard last year and that has been recognised after being shortlisted in the following categories: • Sustainable School • Inspirational Teacher • Secondary School Pupil of the Year • Sports Achievement • Unsung Hero The awards celebrate the inspiring work that goes on inside and outside the College gates, rewarding innovation, excellence and passion through many different award categories. The ceremony revealing the winners will take place at Carmel College on Thursday, 3rd December.

SEEDS TO BE ROCKETED INTO SPACE

ATTENDANCE MATTERS Attendance is currently at 95.3%. This is a great achievement against our target of 95%, however, all students are expected to have an attendance percentile in excess of 95%. We could be even better if it were not for the significant downturn in attendance across all years during the last week of the half term (see attendance graph below).

In the summer term, Cowley will be taking part in the Rocket Seeds project. The project investigates the effects of zero gravity on plant growth. Seeds were sent up to the International Space Station in the summer and when they return, Cowley will be one of the schools involved in a blind trial where two sets of seeds will be planted, one set that has been to space and one set that hasn’t. We’ll update on progress as the project gets underway!

NOTICES FOR PARENTS Speed alert We kindly ask for visitors to Cowley to adhere to the 5 miles per hour speed limit on the car park and exercise caution when exiting the 11-16 site as there is poor visibility to the right hand side. Lost property We have lots of lost property, mainly coats, footwear and glasses. If your daughter or son has misplaced an item in College since September, please have them visit the main reception to check lost property. Prepared to learn Increasingly we are seeing more and more parents dropping items off for students during the College day and this causes disruption to learning. We kindly ask parents to ensure their daughter or son has everything they require before they come to College. Contact details - are yours up-to-date? If you have moved house, changed mobile number or if any of your personal details have changed, please update the office with changes. Communication with students Please ensure your daughter or son knows the arrangements for getting home especially now the dark nights are here. Parents often ring to pass messages onto their child and we cannot interrupt lessons unless it is for emergency reasons. Bus issues With effect from 23rd November 2015 any issues, complaints or comments regarding the supported bus services must be reported to the Merseytravel Traveline team on 0151 236 7676.

Improving attendance is a high priority for the College, and improving attendance in the last week of a term or half term is critical in achieving this. Contrary to belief, meaningful academic work is undertaken until the very end of each term. On the last day of a term, we always hold year assemblies where learners are rewarded for their achievement and attendance. Not being present means they do not get the reward that they deserve. If your child is absent due to illness, medical evidence will be requested by College to enable us to authorise your child’s absence. Medical evidence can be in the form of appointment cards, copies of prescriptions, medication or a note from the doctor.

NEWS IN BRIEF Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

Year 9 student, Samuel Case attended Westminster Abbey to mark the 600th Anniversary of the Battle of Agincourt. The Battle of Agincourt, where Henry V’s outnumbered army defeated the French against the odds, got a rousing service to commemorate its 600th anniversary on 29th October.

Here’s our Silver D of E group on their first walk of the year in Delamere Forest.

Henry’s sword, normally kept safely in a museum, was back in the thick of the action, solemnly carried through Westminster Abbey at the start before being placed on the High Altar.

Sam was invited to attend the Royal Reception afterwards and chatted to a number of dignitaries including the Chelsea Pensioners about his interest in History and gave a very good account of Cowley.

Food hygiene Cowley retained its impressive 5* food hygiene certificate. Well done to the catering team.

The invitation came from the Board of Trustees for Agincourt 600 as a way of sharing this important aspect of British History with people of all ages and hopefully inspire the historians of tomorrow.
