Foster/adoption road perilous, but pays off BY TOM BUSSELBERG Clipper Editor (Part 1 of a two-part series. The second installment will appear on Thursday.) BOUNTIFUL — Kids don’t just magically turn into model adults. That road to success can be filled with so many obstacles, especially for children in the foster system – who need foster

parents who will patiently guide them through the pitfalls. The Christopher and Christine Fletcher family, here, are such a family. Although they have five biological children of their own – three boys and two girls – Christine said they always felt there was someone missing to make their family complete. They believed that completeness would come through an adoption of a teenager.

“There are advantages to adopting a child who is older,” she said.“You know where they’ve been and the issues they are facing. If you can’t handle n See “FOSTER” p. A4

CENTERVILLE — There could be some tweaking of South Davis State House of Representatives districts. And a new House district could be created in the fast-growing northwest portion of the county. But everything’s still very much in the discussion phase as far as legislative re-districting, Rep. Roger Barrus, R-Centerville, told the Clipper Friday morning. A member of the re-districting committee, he is looking toward a public redistricting meeting to be held Thursday, June 2 at 6 p.m. at Legacy Junior High School, 411 N. 3200 W., Layton. The first meeting to gain public input was held in Lehi earlier this month. By law, re-districting must take place for state House of Representatives seats, state Senate seats, state school board and federal House seats. The federal seat has gained the most statewide media attention, because with Utah jumping from n See “LEGISLATIVE” p. A4

Bank robber sentenced to 250 days

FARMINGTON — Kenneth Allen Deherrera, who pleaded guilty in April to robbing a bank in the Smith’s Farmington grocery store was sentenced to 250 days in the Davis County Jail on Wednesday. Deherrera, 57, of Salt Lake City, was sentenced by 2nd District Court Judge David R. Hamilton Wednesday, who gave Deherrera credit for the 168 days he’s served since he was arrested on Dec. 8, 2010. He was also sentenced to serve three years probation and to get a mental health evaluation. He must also complete 200 hours of community service. Deherrera, a psychologist, has counseled soldiers, as well as patients at Davis Behavioral Health and the Davis County Jail. Deherrera’s attorney, Todd Utzinger said his client had difficulty coping with the intense counseling he was giving soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. He left his job, his mother died and he twice tried to commit suicide. Utzinger said “on the spur of the moment he decided to rob a bank.” Deherrera was originally charged with one count of first-degree felony aggravated robbery for robbing the U.S. Bank inside Smith’s in Farmington. Later on the same day he went to the Davis County Jail where he turned himself in.

Clark given probation for thefts

FARMINGTON — The woman accused of stealing from three north Davis area cemeteries was sentenced Thursday to 18 months probation for taking items from the West Point cemetery. June Christine Clark, of Clinton, was in Farmington Justice Court, where Judge Jerald Jensen told her there’s a possibility she could go to jail for the thefts. He also ordered the 38year-old woman to get a mental evaluation and to undergo any recommended counseling. She also must pay a $623 fine and stay away from the West Point cemetery. Jensen had sentenced Clark to 180 days in the Davis County Jail, but stayed the sentence as long as Clark does not violate her probation. If she does, he said he will send her to jail. Earlier in the week, Clark pleaded not guilty in Syracuse Justice Court to four class B misdemeanors for stealing items from the Syracuse City cemetery. She also pleaded not guilty in April to four misdemeanor charges in Clinton and a pretrial conference is set there for June 27. Officers confiscated about 60 items from cemeteries in Clinton and Syracuse over the past year. Clin-

ton police began investigating thefts from Clinton and Syracuse in March. Clark entered a no-contest plea in May to similar charges out of Farmington’s Justice Court for thefts from the West Point cemetery. That plea means a defendant does not admit guilt, but agrees there is probably sufficient evidence to bring a conviction.

Bill benefits F-22s, F-35s at Hill AFB

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Two major aspects of the current Hill AFB workload would benefit, thanks to Thursday’s passage of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for fiscal year 2012 by the U.S. House of Representatives. Specific projects benefiting the county’s largest employer would aid the F-22 System Support Facility and additions and alterations to the F-35 hangar. In addition, a National Rocket Propulsion Strategy that could strongly impact Davis County was also included. That’s because of President Obama’s plans to cancel the Constellation program, material from Rep. Rob Bishop’s office said.

Construction yard turned into play area

HILL AFB — Spaces can be transformed from what many would call ugly to the opposite – and that has happened at Hill AFB. An area that served as a construction yard for the mammoth Boyer Hill Military Housing project and double-wide construction trailer for 5 1/2 years is now a regional park. Patriot Hills park was formally unveiled Wednesday. Kompan play equipment, which offers play structures for all ages, is the center point for the park. There is also a picnic pavilion with tables, benches, restrooms and more than an acre of grass to host a variety of activities, information from Hill AFB says.

Art, music focus of festival for special needs students

BY LOUISE R. SHAW Clipper Staff Writer

FARMINGTON — There was music and dancing, storytelling and socializing at this year's Art Festival, an event held for special needs students at the Legacy Event Center Thursday. There were big smiles as well, as more than 480 special education students, along with 150 peer tutors, parents, teachers and volunteers gathered to celebrate the arts. "I like seeing all the kids and how interested they are in each other,” said Bailey Lance, a peer tutor from Boulton Elementary. “I like seeing how they express their creativity in different ways than you have seen before,” said Emerald Barney, also a student at Boulton. The annual event has been going for more than 20 years said Kim Sparkman, secretary in the special education office who helps organize the festival. “The kids seem to love it and look forward to it every year,” she said. The focus on the arts helps with socialization and with the development of fine and gross motor skills, said Sparkman. Each of the groups could choose among six, half-hour long sessions, where they

During a regular school day, the students, who ranged in age from kindergartners to post-high school students, attend self-contained Functional Skills classes at their individual schools. Sparkman said funding for the day of art activity comes from Art Access, in cooperation with the Utah

Congressional delegation monitoring AF proposal HILL AFB — Sens. Orrin Hatch and Mike Lee and Rep. Rob Bishop are monitoring a proposal being considered by the Air Force which may cut jobs at Hill Air Force Base. The lawmakers sent a letter to Secretary of the Air Force Michael Donley and Air Force Chief of Staff Norton Schwartz earlier this month, which was signed by 12 senators and congressman. The letter inquired about information associated with rumors of depot consolidation, according to Steve Petersen, a Bishop staff member who worked on the letter on Bishop’s behalf.

In the letter, the lawmakers voiced concerns about a proposal that may take program management positions from some weapons positions away from depots such as Hill and make them a part of the Air Force Material Command headquarters at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. Speaking about the proposal, Hatch said on Friday, “This proposal is pennywise and pound-foolish. For years, the Air Force has said having engineers and procurement professionals located next to the depot maintainers has achieved great efficiencies and savings. It would be foolish to abandon the practice now

for such small short-term gains. “Besides costing jobs in Utah, it might well set a precedent that could negatively affect other programs such as the F-35,” he continued. “That’s why I, along with Congressman Bishop and Senator Lee, wrote a letter to the Air Force asking the service to reconsider this proposal. I remain hopeful and have reason to believe the Air Force might heed

that advice, but it is important to remain vigilant until the matter is fully resolved.” Petersen said for the time being Hill will still receive the F-35. “We do not foresee any changes there,” he said. “It is our understanding that at this time, there are no plans to proceed with consolidation but we continue to monitor this matter.” mwilliams@davisclipper.com

Community support a gift for ‘Biggest Loser’ at-home winner BY JENNIFFER WARDELL Clipper Staff Writer BOUNTIFUL — With losing weight and life in general, it’s easier to get by with a little help from your friends. Denise Hill, the Bountiful woman who won the $100,000 at-home weight loss prize on this season of “The Biggest Loser,” dropped a full 125 pounds (nearly 49 percent of her original body weight of 256 pounds). She credits the weight loss, much of which happened after she was eliminated from the show in late February, to the support of the community here in Bountiful. “It’s always an emotional transition period when you go back, and you think ‘How am I going to do this on my own?’” said Hill, who joined the show with her married daughter Sarah Nitta. “But I had amazing support in Bountiful.” That support was especially important for Hill, whose quest to change her lifestyle robbed her of one of her usual coping mechanisms. “I’ve always been an emotional eater, and I didn’t have that anymore,” she said.“So I did something I don’t do very often. I reached out to people.” Though the contestants who stay on “The Biggest Loser” compete to win $250,000, those who have been eliminated due to insufficient weight loss continue to compete at home for a prize that it awarded during the show’s season finale. Starting from the weight they were when they first joined the show, the one who has lost the biggest percentage of body weight wins the money. “It was a gift to be able to be on the ranch,” said Hill, referring to the location where the contestants live and exercise while on the show.“I felt it was my responsibility to keep going as hard and strong as I could at home.” She wasn’t alone in her goal. The show set up Hill with a personal trainer, Ryan Larsen, and she kept up a variety of classes at three different gyms. She was also helped by Bountiful doctor Troy Giles, Melissa Oborn from the South Davis Recreation Center, and the support of the entire community. “The community was just amazing,” said Hill.“It was just an awesome experience.” Another part of what made it so awesome was how far she surpassed her own weight loss goal. Hill said that she had intended to get down to 150 pounds, and would have been thrilled to be at 140. Now that she’s at 131 pounds, she’s back to her old high school weight. “I have six daughters, and I can wear their clothes now,” she said.“It’s

DENISE HILL during the final weigh-in on the “Biggest Loser” season finale, above. Right: Denise at the weight she was when she first joined the show. Photos courtesy of NBC Universal really fun.” It was family that first inspired Hill, a mother of eight, to take part in “The Biggest Loser.” “I thought, I can’t even get off a chair,” she said.“How am I going to be here for my grandkids?” She also went on the show to support her daughter Sarah, who’d had several miscarriages due to her weight and an ectopic pregnancy just before the show started. Hill said she is going to use part of the money she won for her daughter. “Sarah and her husband are both students, so they don’t have insurance,” she said.“I want to make sure she gets to a good doctor so they can check that everything’s OK.” She’s also planning on paying off debts, and helping fellow “Biggest Loser” contestant Justin Pope to open

a gym in Logan that will focus on helping people who normally can’t afford membership. “It’s hard to go to a gym when you don’t have the money,” said Hill.“I just want to do something to help the community.” jwardell@davisclipper.com

Davis officials told state working to lower PM 2.5 BY MELINDA WILLIAMS Clipper Staff Writer CLEARFIELD —The mountains of the Wasatch Front protect us from such weather events as the massive tornadoes which recently hit the midwest. But they also hold in air pollution, including PM 2.5, which contributes to respiratory and cardiopulmonary ailments. On Thursday, Davis County Board of Health members and commissioners heard a report from the state Division of Air Quality on the state’s nonattainment of the federal Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Air Act, and what can be done to bring Utah into compliance. State Division of Air Quality Division Director Bryce Bird, gave a somewhat upbeat message that Utah has met increasingly lower standards in the past for a number of pollutants, saying “I hope we’ll be able to reach this standard. We’re going in the right direction.” In the fall of 2006 the EPA revised the National Ambient Air Quality Standards for PM 2.5, lowering the 24-hour standard from the 1997 level of 65 microgram per cubic meter to 35, effective in December 2006. Utah and all other states were required to submit recommendations on meeting those standards in 2007. Much of the Wasatch Front fell into the nonattainment area. The state has been given until December 2012 to develop the tools necessary to bring the PM 2.5 number down. Through the rest of this year, state air quality officials will develop the State Implementation Plan, working with stakeholders on strategies. During 2012 they’ll be writing the documentation, and then will have a year to implement the strategy before the clock starts ticking on compliance. Next week, the public may offer input at a kickoff meeting focusing on Davis, Box Elder, Salt Lake, Tooele and Weber counties on Wednesday, June 1 from 2-4 p.,m. at the Utah Department of Environmental Quality Board room 1015, 195 N. 1950 West, Salt Lake City. The meeting is being held following the Division of Air Quality Board meeting and will be Webcast and recorded and available for viewing after June 1. If Utah does not comply with the new standards, it could mean sanctions, such as cuts in federal transportation funding, but Bird said in times past when EPA standards

Over the years, the state has shown great improvements in air quality. In 2004, the Bountiful monitoring station showed the 24 hour PM 2.5 value to be 45.8, which dropped to 34.1 in 2006. Bird told the health board members and commissioners that everybody is responsible. About a third of the PM 2.5 problem is caused by vehicle emissions, another third is caused by area sources including homes and businesses, and a third is caused by industrial sources. Bird said the third dealing with area sources has gone down due to better technology in building methods, such as better insulation.“It’s the economics of energy.” Some of those present questioned if, given the state’s geography, Utah would ever be able to come into compliance, especially since the standards are continually lowered. “Don’t we reach a point where we jeopardize our life,” by cutting the standards too much?” Davis County Commissioner Louenda Downs asked.“Industry and cars need to co-exist with EPA’s health standards,” she said. That, Bird said, is where the state comes in, looking at the economics, and working on our ability to make reasonable controls. mwilliams@davisclipper.com

the issues, they’re just not the right child for your family,” she said.“Look at the child’s ability to overcome and progress. Don’t focus on what they’ve gone through and the resulting problems. A child with the ability to overcome will thrive with a committed forever family.” No matter how hard you try, however, the life the child had before can cause difficulties. “We were (initially) drawn to a teen boy,” she said.At the time, there were the three boys and one girl in the family.Young Sophia, now 2, wasn’t yet in the picture. “We met a young man, age 16 at the time, and we brought him to our home to visit with him daily,” making the drive back and forth from South Salt Lake to Bountiful.

“We spent as much time as we could together that summer. We bonded deeply and grew to love him. Unfortunately, he encountered his birth family which triggered great emotions, and he gave into fear and began to sabotage himself,” Christine said. No matter how hard the Fletchers tried, the young man continued to regress until the adoption plan had to be canceled six months later. “The more we tried to hang on, the more he acted out. It was really hard to let him go, because we love him. We pray for him a lot, but we can’t be a family for him,” she said. “Kids always sabotage things out of fear. They’re testing that love – because they’re afraid,” Christine said. But the Fletchers have

stuck with it, always believing,“Doesn’t every child deserve to have a family and someone who can be good parents?” They knew their was room for another child in their home – and eventually fostered, and then adopted Hannah. That was after they’d always imagined adding a young man to their family. The story of how Hannah came to join the Fletchers will appear in next Thursday’s paper. A need for other families, such as the Fletchers, is always there, emphasizes Brenda Durtschi, Northern Utah Regional Representative for the Utah Foster Care Foundation. “Most of the families we recruit to foster or to adopt are not typically interested in teens,” she said. “We sometimes hear families say they would like

to take younger children so they can really make an impact on a child. I cannot imagine a greater impact than helping a teen find some stability, direction, and a sense of self prior to venturing out in the world,” she said. “When teens age out from the foster care system, the outcomes tend to be bleak. Our kids will fare much better if they have a connection to a family. “Being a parent to a teen is definitely different from being a parent to a younger child,” Durtschi said. “Fostering or adopting teens is an opportunity to assist in their personal growth, maturity, and skills development that will help them survive in the real world. These youth need caring adults to help them develop into the people they can be.”

Warhola found incompetent to stand trial FARMINGTON — The woman accused of killing her two children last September at their Layton home has been found incompetent to stand trial. Sun Cha Warhola, 45, was in 2nd District Court Friday, where Judge David Conners made the ruling,

shortly before the Clipper went to press. A hearing to review her competency will be Nov. 4. Following the hearing her attorney Ed Brass, said “She is severely mentally ill.” Warhola is charged with two counts of aggravated

murder, each carrying the possibility of a death sentence. Police say they found her children — James 8, and Jean, 7 — in a bedroom in their home after their father Kenneth Warhola called 911. Brass said two doctors

have found Sun Cha Warhola mentally incompetent to stand trial. He said those two doctors also recommended she be sent to the Utah State Hospital and be medicated to restore her competency. mwilliams@davisclipper.com

three to four House seats, it will necessitate a total realignment. At this stage of the process, Barrus is concentrating on Northern Utah, Davis County to the Utah/Idaho state line, along with Reps. Gage Froerer of Huntsville and Curt Webb of Logan. Davis County currently has eight House districts that fall totally within the county, and one that includes parts of Weber County, as well. “We have a couple (preliminary) proposals that fit the (population) criteria on how you could restructure the Davis County area,” Barrus said. “Because of the population shift,Weber County will probably lose one seat, and Davis County will probably gain a seat. “Quite frankly, a lot of that growth, where it’s headed, there will probably be another legislative district toward the Syracuse area,” he said.“Things are going to shift, some will be more dramatic than others.” In South Davis, Barrus’ District 18 has “a surplus of several thousand people” above the soughtafter number, he said, while District 19, with Rep.

Jim Nielson, is “lacking a couple of thousand,” and Becky Edwards’ District 20 “has a few extra. But when you go to District 17 (Julie Fisher, parts of Farmington, Fruit Heights and Kaysville), she needs a few more,” for example. “People can weigh in,” the Centerville resident said, noting draft proposals will be made available as the process continues.“We invite the public, media, etc., to give us their thoughts on how this might work.” Efforts will be made to keep districts within communities, but can’t always work because no community fits the exact numerical criteria (Bountiful has about 4,000 more residents than one district would allow, for example, but would have to fit with other districts to meet the criteria.) “How do you divide that up so some people won’t feel like they’re being dis-enfranchised?” Barrus said.“Some comments we have heard from the get go is a lack of trust sometimes between us and our citizens. We’re doing everything we can.” For more information, visit www.le.utah.gov and click “redistricting” under featured items.

Different perspectives, same language Father and daughter hold artistic conversation in BDAC show BY JENNIFFER WARDELL Clipper Staff Writer BOUNTIFUL — A family is a group of often wildly different individuals tied together just beneath the surface. At the Bountiful/Davis Art Center’s “Related” show, running now through June 20, that tie can also be seen in a father and daughter’s wildly different but connected art. Marinus E. Wolf and his daughter Linnie Brown used crossword clues and their answers to

create sets of paintings that offered their own unique perspectives but were tied together by a variety of different threads. The styles of the two artists are very different, with Wolf’s bright, sharp geometric paintings and Brown’s multilayered, softer-edged creations. On the surface they don’t seem to connect at all, their proximity serving only to sharply contrast their two styles. A closer look, however, shows a much closer tie. Some of the sets of paint-

ings offer two sets of perspective on the same topic, transform the same thought into their different styles, or expand on a larger theme beyond the borders of the words that inspired them. In Wolf’s “Sail,” the bright abstract curves of a sailboat are met with billowing smoke stacks that suggest much larger, more serious ships in Brown’s “Leave Port.” Brown’s “What Wheel Do on An Axis,” which looks like a highway interchange seen from above, is deconstruct-

ed into a network of lines and squares in Wolf’s “Rotate.” The needles in Brown’s “It’s not Good to Run One,” which looks like a gauntlet, pop up as an injection in Wolf’s “Fever.” CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE: “Sail” by Wolf and “Leave Port” by Brown, “Evil Twin” by Wolf and “Person on your Bad Side” by Brown, “Brief and to the Point” by Brown and “Terse” by Wolf, and “It’s not Good to Run One” by Brown and “Fever” by Wolf. CNA crowned Miss Farmington 2011 BY JENNIFFER WARDELL Clipper Staff Writer FARMINGTON — Though Jessica Francis dreams more of working in a hospital’s trauma unit than she does being a princess, she gets to wear a crown anyway. Francis was recently crowned Miss Farmington 2011, with Heather Gemperline as her first FRANCIS being crowed, left. Top right corner: Gemperline, Francis, and Costley. Courtesy photos

attendant and Caitlyn Costley as her second attendant. “It is far more than a pretty dress, a polished talent and even a prestigious title,” said Francis.“This role is ultimately a time for me to empower, educate, and embrace those I represent by teaching them the importance of battling life’s greatest tests.” Francis, who is a certified nurse assistant (CNA), is currently in the nursing program at Weber and has chosen “Fight Like A Girl: Giving

Strength & Power to Women Battling Disease” as her platform. “It is my goal to instill upon the hearts of women in this community that ... there is strength from within to conquer any opponent,” she said. Jessica will go on to represent Farmington in the 2012 Miss Utah Pageant. The previous Miss Farmington,Arielle Simpson, and the current Miss Davis County (Cierra Pekarcik) will compete for the title in the 2011 competition which is set for June.

KAYSVILLE — Katlyn Mease won a $1,000 scholarship and an invitation to participate in a week-long program in Washington, D.C. this June, when her essay on peace took the top prize for the state. The U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP) announced that Mease wrote Utah’s winning essay in the Institute’s 24th Annual National Peace Essay Contest. Her essay, titled, “Transition to Peace: the Success of Rwanda and Failure of Sudan,” addressed the intersection between governance, corruption and conflict. USIP’s mission is to think, act, teach and train. At the program in D.C., Mease and other state winners will meet with institute experts, foreign policy professionals, academics and dignitaries. The importance of conflict prevention, management and post-conflict peace building will be discussed.

Clinic awards scholarships LAYTON — Five Davis County students interested in careers in healthcare, were awarded $1,000 scholarships by Tanner Clinic. Whitney Ann Porter of Clearfield High, Jennifer Peterson of Davis High, McKenna Pounder of Layton High, Katie Stout of Northridge High and Alison Spendlove of Syracuse High were named recipients of the awards. “The scholarship committee was delighted with the number of exceptional students who applied for scholarships this year,” said Kevin Mansfield, human resources director and scholarship committee member. “The decisions were very difficult due to the incredible accomplishments of each student. This great response showcases the quality of education our local high schools are providing to our students.” The Tanner Clinic includes 70 physicians in 37 specialities, with offices in Layton, Kaysville and Syracuse.

French students score at top KAYSVILLE — French students at Davis High earned top scores in the American Association of Teachers of French National French Exam. Ninetyeight students scored high enough to rank in the top 10 percent at either the national or state level or both. Three students scored a perfect 70 out of 70.

CLEARFIELD —Things are winding down now, at the Davis School District Nutrition Services center, as the traditional school year is just about to end. But for nine months, 21 employees have been busy from early in the morning, cooking roasts and baking rolls and mixing muffins as they prepare the lunches that will serve 38,000 students each day. In one room, two women oversee 300-gallon kettles mixing turkey gravy, in another, employees are cutting and stacking pot-pie crusts and in another, a large batch of blueberry muffins is mixed and prepped for baking. Meanwhile, in one floor-to ceiling oven, 15 rows of muffins are rotating so they can be cooked to perfection while nearby, that many rows of rolls are rising. Around the corner, 300 pounds of cinnamon roll dough is being kneaded by machine, just next to the machine that can shape 9,000 rolls an hour. Meanwhile, down the hall, red and green Jello, macaroni and cheese. ranch dressing, roast, chocolate pudding and taco meat wait, chilled, alongside the pot pie filling to be taken to the kids at schools around the county. “The beauty of being here is that we’re always cooking for the future,” said Pam Tsakalos, director of nutrition services for the district. “We don’t have failures,” she added. “Everything that goes out – it’s perfect.” For the last 14 years, the center, located in a distant

DATC students honored for dedication, successes Unemployment was the impetus for DaRece Glover to enroll at Davis Applied Technology College (DATC), where her studies have already led to a new job. Glover, one of two students named May student of the month at DATC, had always had a job – and often two. When she was laid off, the single mom enrolled in DATC’s business technology program and studied software application courses such as Excel, PowerPoint and Access by Microsoft. Her instructors said she stood out because of her commitment to learning and understanding concepts, more than just earning certificates or getting a job. She was hired by the Internal Revenue Service as a Customer Service Representative, an opportunity she attributes to her education. “I’m using my computer skills and many things I have learned in

the classroom at this job,” she said. “The training I received at DATC has definitely helped me. “Being unemployed was the worst thing I have ever gone through and I don’t want to be in that position again,” she said. “I think the schooling I received at DATC will help me to never be unemployed again.” She continues her studies along with her job. Brittany Butler was also named student of the month for May. Butler is enrolled in the culinary arts program at DATC. She learned to love

baking while caring for her dad, who had cancer. “I would bake stuff during the day while he was sleeping. He wouldn’t eat any of it so I gave it to his doctors. I became very popular at the University of Utah,” she says. While enrolled at DATC, she took first place in a SkillsUSA competition in commercial bakery, made gingerbread houses for the Grand America, created menus and meals for faculty, staff and students. “Brittany is an amazing student,” said her instructor, Penny Moline.

“Everything she touches is beautiful, from her cake decorating to making the salad bar better than ever; she takes pride in her work and it shows. It is going to be fun to watch her culinary career prosper. She has the dedication and work ethic to make it far in this field.” Butler plans to graduate in September and has plans to work at a resort, a reception hall or a restaurant, but is open to whatever comes along. “Everybody loves food and it’s universal, which is what I love about it,” she said. lshaw@davisclipper.com

In a nod to current concerns, the district reduced sodium in the gravy five percent this year and will reduce it another five percent in the next year. “We can’t go ‘cold turkey’ or no one will eat it,” she said. New federal requirements taking effect in the 2012-13 year will bring further changes, which must be balanced with what the kids will eat. Garden help blossoms at free fair ‘Summer of Fun’ in county distributed

BY JENNIFFER WARDELL Clipper Staff Writer LAYTON — With the rain flooding the flowers and the lawn looking like it has some terrible disease, it can be a wonderful relief to just get a little help with the gardening. At the free 2011 Spring Garden Fair, set to be held June 4 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Weber Basin’s Water Conservation Learning Garden in Layton, there are plenty of experts waiting to offer a hand. Larry Sagars, host of the “KSL Greenhouse Show,” and a host of other gardening professionals will be teaching free classes, answering questions, and offering advice about the best way to keep your yards looking beautiful and healthy this summer. “It’s a chance to guide people to get the landscape they want to have while still being efficient with water,” said Dave Rice, the conservancy programs coordinator for Weber Basin Water.“We can see a huge reduction in water without having to give up things like green lawns.” The focus is on far more than just conservation, however.Weber Basin’s philosophy is that educating people about all kinds of gardening topics will eventually lead to more efficient water use, and as such the classes at the garden fair will cover topics such as the best Utah native plants for your par-

Internationally-trained chef joins Wight House staff

NEW WIGHT HOUSE Executive Chef Marco Silva, pictured with some of the food he has created. Silva has been at the Wight House since March. Courtesy photo

BY MELINDA WILLIAMS Clipper Staff Writer BOUNTIFUL — Executive Chef Marco Silva has cooked for a variety of clients from restaurants to businesses to private individuals throughout the world. Since March, the Brazilian-born chef has brought his talent to the Wight House Reception Center, where he is cooking up “all things food.” Silva, who has family in the Salt Lake area, is working to have his own program on the Food Network. For now, he divides his time between providing luncheons and dinners at the well-known Bountiful Reception Center and catering to private individuals in the Park City and Deer Valley area —some-

thing he has been doing throughout the world for years. Silva received his first culinary training at an early age, helping his mother cook for family parties. He soon became the one in charge of making the desserts, from scratch. “My skills as a chef expanded when invited to cook, often coming early to help family and friends with the meal so I could learn to make what they were preparing,” he said. As he grew, so did his knowledge of international foods, fragrances and spices, and with that came the desire to be a real chef. He worked for a successful catering company in Brazil, and at age 24 moved to Europe, where he studied at multiple culinary schools and with chefs in Portugal,

Spain and France, including at the renowned Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Arts Program in Paris. He returned to Brazil in 1997 to cater for society parties. The following year he came to the United States working as a private chef in residences in Florida, New York, and here in Utah. In 2002, Silva started his own business “Creative Cuisine,” focused on Brazilian inspired food, which led to requests for more internationally-inspired dishes. He now owns Cuisine by Marco Silva, a company he started with the notion he could provide great tasting international and American cuisine better than anyone in the field today. He started with a small kitchen space and was soon cooking in private homes.

Today, he maintains clients in Brazil and New York, who he said call upon him to put his culinary mastermind to work, often, with only a minute’s notice. Within his business, Silva does more than just cook. He also serves as a culinary consultant, helping business owners set up commercial kitchens. He said he has catered events upward to 1,000 guests and intimate dinners for six of one’s closest friends. He has catered business meetings for corporations and helped them manage large-scale events. But Silva does more than cook. He speaks five languages and is a classically trained pianist. He has also become a U.S. citizen. mwilliams@davisclipper.com

Retail sales drop hurts Davis County BOUNTIFUL — There may be more sales at the cash register, so to speak, these days, but the retail sector has still been slammed – including in Davis County. Bountiful came in fifth in terms of retail sales drop among the state’s large cities, a 20.5 percent slide, while next-door Centerville saw its retail sales drop by 17.6 percent. Layton, meanwhile, fell by only 8.3 percent, a justreleased report shows. The latest issue of “Utah’s Economy,” from Commerce Real Estate Solutions indicates Davis County saw a substantial dip, but came in eighth, proportionately, among Utah’s 10 major counties. It showed the county’s retail sales stood at $2.53 billion in 2008, compared to just under $2.3 billion last

year, for a drop of 9.4 percent. That compared with “biggest loser” Utah County, which saw a dip of 21.8 percent, followed closely by Washington, which fell by 21.4 percent. Salt Lake County, which accounts for 4 1/2 times the retail of Davis County, saw a dip of 7 percent, while Weber County, whose retail sector approaches nearly 80 percent of Davis County’s, decreased by only 4.3 percent. “The three consecutive years of declining sales (2008-2010) represents the most severe contraction for the industry in the past 30 years,” the report says. Statewide, retail jobs have fallen from 148,750 to 137,700, a 7.4 percent drop. About one-in-four jobs

By the numbers:

n Bountiful had the fifth biggest sales drop in the state - 20.5 percent n Davis had the eighth biggest drop of Utah’s 10 major counties - 9.4 percent n Provo and Utah county saw the biggest drops lost in retail were in the auto sales sector, while building and garden stores, tied directly to home sales and activity, lost 2,000 jobs. The home building cycle and its rough road over the last few years, is believed to factor big in the large retail sales drops in Washington

and Utah Counties, the report indicates. “The rate of store closings has been more modest than the decline in sales and employment,” the report says. Retail stores, not including restaurants and fast food operations, dropped from a relatively modest 3.4 percent, from 9,126 to 8,818. Bountiful’s retail sales dived from $326.7 million in 2008 to $259.7 million last year, or more than one-fifth, and Centerville fell by 17.6 percent, from $307.7 million to $253.5 million, while Layton’s fell from $887.6 million to $814.3 million. The biggest drops came in Provo, at 32.9 percent, followed by American Fork, St. George and Orem, and then Bountiful. tbusselberg@davisclipper.com

Rhyme and Reason WAITING FOR STONES TO SING (by Marilyn Larrabee) Don’t plant me in town, he said, though he lived and worked here, like the rest of us. So, I didn’t. His ashes grace a high ridge a hundred miles from town where eagles soar above spruces and meadows of fat elk. Wild flowers and lichen thrive on the ridge’s rosy sandstone. Years ago, he brought down a truckload of the prettiest boulders up there for our rock garden. Still, those silent stones weren’t enough to bring him closer. So I planted a spruce tree to shade and shelter and welcome birds to the garden. I hear his voice where wind whispers through needles. I see his blue eyes twinkle through branches. I recognize his whistle in bird calls. And lately, the stones have begun to hum. The Utah State Poetry Society, Rhyme and Reason Chapter, is national and state affiliated. . Titans baseball eliminated Davis finishes out of the running for state title BY SHAIN GILLET Clipper Sports Editor

KEARNS — After the fourth inning of play against the Jordan High Beetdiggers, the Syracuse Titans baseball team were down by a single run. But Jordan’s four-run bottom of the fifth followed by a five-run sixth helped propel the Beetdiggers to a 12-2 win in six innings, eliminating the Titans baseball team from the 5A state playoffs. Syracuse found themselves down after the first two innings when the Beetdiggers crossed the plate twice for a 2-0 lead. Jordan’s pair of runs were split between the first two innings, crossing the plate once each inning. The Titans made a comeback effort in the top of the third, scoring a pair of runs to tie the game. In the inning, Laurence Casias ended up driving in both runs as they picked up some momentum heading into the later innings. Jordan, however, scored 10 more runs in their half of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to end the game without a seventh inning being played. After crossing the plate once in their half of the fourth, Jordan crossed the plate four more times in the fifth to take a 7-2 lead after following the inning. Jordan’s five-run sixth

SALT LAKE CITY — The Davis Darts softball team had a 20 lead after the top half of the third inning in their playoff game against Weber Wednesday afternoon. That was the only time they held the lead, as the Warriors scored three runs in the bottom half and two more times in the fifth inning to win 5-2 and send the Darts out of the playoffs. Down by a pair,Weber stepped up to the plate and started getting a few hits – as well as a few breaks – to take the lead at 3-2. After a quick ground out to start the inning, lead off hitter Haley Pardo singled to center field. Taylor Stroud followed with an infield single and Nicole Weiss hit an RBI single to cut their deficit to one run. Two batters later, Elizabeth Messerly hit a two out, two-RBI single to left field that scored Stroud and Weiss. The side retired when Cheyenne Norton got Hali Bennion to ground out to second base. Weber was also fortunate, as was Davis at times, of an inconsistent strike zone by the home plate umpire and a few other calls that could have gone either way for both teams. During an at-bat for Weber, a check-swing that looked to cross the plate was called a ball. During another at bat for Davis, a pair of pitches that looked to be thrown in the same location were called two different ways, eventual-

SALT LAKE CITY — The Syracuse Lady Titans softball team took care of Skyline to continue to the next round in the one-loss bracket Wednesday afternoon. From there, they were left with the task of facing the Weber Warriors, who defeated Davis High School earlier, later in the afternoon. But the quick-striking offense wasn’t there for the Titans against Weber, as they only mustered two hits the entire game while losing to the Warriors 10-0. The loss eliminates them from the 5A state softball playoffs. Weber took full advantage of Taylor Tann, who pitched for the Titans, from the very beginning, scoring five runs in the first inning n See “SYRACUSE,” p. B2

load the bases. After getting a strike out and falling behind to Bennion, Norton’s next pitch was lined for a RBI single. Another throwing error by Davis allowed the second runner to score, giving the Warriors their three run lead. The Lady Darts fired the opening salvo in the game when two runs came around to score in the top of the third inning, taking the brief, but initial, lead at the time. After Cali Reynolds struck out to start the inning, Breezy Roth lined a single to right field and stole second base while Cheyne Moffett was at the plate. Moffett lined out and Ali Smith worked a walk to put runners on first and second with two gone. Autumn Woodfall and Dani MacKay followed by hitting a pair of RBI singles, scoring Roth and Smith respectively. No runner for Davis ever passed second base again as they were held out of the runs column for the rest of the game. Norton, though she

and three more in the second to take an eight run lead. Holding down the Syracuse offense was McKenna Bull, who held Davis to just a pair of runs in the team’s earlier game. In her five innings of work against Syracuse, she allowed just a pair of hits and struck out seven more batters to bring her two-game total to 15 strike outs in one day. The Warriors scored two more runs in the top of the fifth inning, then held the Titans scoreless in the bottom half to end the game with the mercy rule. Among Weber’s 10 hits included six extra base hits, all doubles, that helped the Warriors

advance to the next round of the state 5A playoffs. Among the doubles included Cyndee Clark, Haley Pardo, Hali Bennion, Jaycee Leichty, Liz Messerly and Macy Rasley. In the Titans’ game against Skyline, Syracuse was able to jump ahead with a 4-1 lead after the second inning. Ashley Ostler, who took to the rubber for Syracuse, ended up earning the win as she allowed three runs on just four hits while pitching herself out of trouble at times. Timmarie Taylor racked in the Lady Titans’ only extra-base hit on the afternoon, a double. Skyline got the early

lead after scratching across the first run of the game in the top of the first inning. After allowing four runs to Syracuse in the bottom of the first and second innings, they cut their deficit to two runs after scoring another run in the top of the third. Another run in the fifth cut the score to 4-3 after five innings, but the Eagles were held out of the run column in the final two innings as the Titans picked up the win to face Weber. The Titans’ loss capped off a year that saw the team go 22-8 for the season, including the playoffs. They entered the state 5A softball tournament as the No. 2 team out of Region 1, posting a 13-3

was aided by Brennon Anderson, who completed the game with a three-run home run that ended the game one inning early, activating the mercy rule. McCoy Hill also hit a home run for Jordan as five different players recorded extra base hits for the Beetdiggers. Along with their 12 hits, the Beetdiggers were also aided with six Titan errors, who also mustered just a pair of hits offensively. Colton Shaver of Jordan pitched all six innings, allowing two

runs and two hits as his defense committed just one error in the game. Shaver picked up the win and also doubled at the plate for Jordan. Syracuse’s season ended with a 15-13 overall record including the playoffs. Their 10-6 Region 1 record was good enough to finish third in Region 1, four games behind cochampions Viewmont and Davis. They entered the playoffs with an opening round loss to the Lone Peak Knights, but won three straight games against Cyprus,West and

Brighton high schools in order to face Jordan Wednesday afternoon. A win could have given them an opportunity to get to the 5A state finals, which were held Friday afternoon at Utah Valley University in Orem. record with only Roy (16-0 and Region 1 champions) ahead of them in the standings. The Lady Titans playoff run began with a 10run win over Pleasant Grove, but lost a 6-2 game to Murray in the second round. The win over Skyline had them a pair of games closer to the 5A title game before losing to Weber. The Warriors finished two games behind Syracuse in the region, losing both regular season match ups. SALT LAKE CITY — The Layton High softball team was closer than it’s ever been to competing for a 5A state championship. Following the team’s win in the one-loss bracket Saturday, however, the Lancers were quickly eliminated from the playoffs by the Brighton Bengals Wednesday. Brighton won the game 5-1, ending the Lady Lancers first playoff appearance in three years. The Lancers found themselves behind from the beginning, allowing three runs to cross the plate in the bottom of the first inning to give the Bengals a three-run lead. Layton’s only response to the deficit came in the top of the third inning, when they scratched across a run to cut their deficit to two runs following the inning. Keeping the Lancers in the game was Carlee Beck, who pitched well after allowing the first three runs to score to open up the game. From the second to the fifth inning, however, she didn’t allow another run as her defense helped behind her by committing just one error in the contest. The Lancers deficit grew larger in the sixth inning, however, when two more

runs came across for Brighton to give the Bengals a four-run lead. Layton was held scoreless in the top of the seventh and the Lancers were left out of contention for the 5A state championship. For the Lancers, Beck ended up taking the loss while Lauren Kirschner hit a double for the team’s only extra base hit of the afternoon. The Bengals were led by Lexi Ney, who toed the rubber and pitched well enough to get the win. Marissa Egbert and Shelbi Everett each had extra base hits during the game, a triple and a double respectively. The Lady Lancers finished the season with a 1412 overall record including the playoffs. Their 8-8 Region 1 record forced them to play Cyprus in a play-in game just to get into the state 5A softball tournament. After an opening round loss to Taylorsville, the Lancers picked up a shutout victory over Alta in their first one-loss bracket game. Brighton lost to Bingham in their second game Wednesday, 6-0. The 5A final game took place Friday at the Valley Softball Complex. The score was not reported to the Clipper as of press time. sgillet@davisclipper.com

Stake a graduation party photo walk continued from B5

ne of my vivid childhood memories is of riding in the backseat of our Ford station wagon on a trip through the scorching deserts of the Southwest in the summer with no air conditioning and two restless brothers kicking each other and me. We often were rescued from boredom by a series of Burma-Shave signposts. Printed on giant stakes spaced about a mile apart, silly rhymes grabbed our attention and gave us a chuckle, prompting us to make up our own verses. With a nod to that clever marketing idea, I created our own version of these posts, using photos for my kids’ high-school graduation parties. Along the walkway that led guests from our front yard to the festivities in the back was a progressive visual history of their lives from tot to teen. Step 1: Sort through family photos of your graduate, and choose about 12 favorites that make you smile. We pulled out photo albums, loose pictures stuffed in drawers and my wallet, and identified favorites in our

photo collection. Sort and identify your favorites from the different stages of your child’s life. Step 2: Scan and print enlarged 81/2-by-11-inch versions of the photos on your computer or have them enlarged and copied in color at a copy store. For displaying 12 photos, purchase six large sheets of poster board in bright colors at a discount or art-supply store and 12 dowels or garden stakes at your hardware store. Cut poster board in half widthwise. Step 3: Attach photos to the poster board with spray adhesive outdoors, following the directions on the can. For added pizzazz, you might wish to glue on construction paper cut in geometric shapes for decoration. Attach the dowels with strong tape to the back of each photo poster. Set in

the ground or in planter boxes along the path to your party. Tip: Don’t rush through the photo finding and sorting step. Although timeconsuming, it was the most meaningful experience of the party planning. As a mom of three, I found pleasure in focusing on just one of the kids for a concentrated period of time, chronicling that life with visual and sentimental memories. Resource: Read clever vintage Burma-Shave rhymes out loud at: http://burma-shave.org/jin-

gles/. *** Donna Erickson’s awardwinning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. aforementioned David E. Kelley. NBC also passed on the Don Johnson-starring vehicle, “Mann’s World,” which I was looking forward to seeing if only because of my longstanding crush on the series’ star. Fans of the “The Event” also will get no closure, as NBC declined to renew it for another season. Q: Did Alicia Silverstone have her baby yet? If so, how are they doing? — Roxie R., Denver A: Alicia and husband Christopher Jarecki welcomed 7-pound, 15-ounce baby-boy Bear Blu Jarecki into the world on May 5. She posted the details on her website, thekindlife.com: “We are all three in love! I’m so grateful to this community for all the love, support, good wishes and happy vibes you’ve sent me dur-

We LOVE our carriers! Thank you!

The entire Clipper staff would like to thank our army of hard-working, dedicated newspaper carriers. We appreciate all that you do!

r Clippe

Readers, if you’d like to pass on a kind comment or thank you to your carrier, please e-mail Jorgina at jhancock@davisclipper.com. She’ll make sure they receive your message! Tips are always appreciated, too.

“I would like to commend Jackson Green for the great job he does bringing the Clipper to my home twice a week. He has to come up a very steep hill in all sorts of weather, but he does it and the paper is always right by the front door. He also puts little notes with the paper.Like for Mother’s Day he says “Happy Mother’s Day” or on other holidays he makes a point of telling you to have a great day. It is great to have such a nice and friendly carrier. Thanks for all you do Jackson.” – Cheri E. (Centerville)

If you’re interested in becoming a carrier, please call 801-295-2251 ext. 120 or email jhancock@davisclipper.com
