Stetson is ranked sixth in legal writing for 2015 by U.S. News & World Report. Taught by full-time professors, Stetson’s research and writing courses prepare you for career-long success in legal communication and advocacy. Stetson students have won writing awards at state and national levels. Stetson is also home to the Institute for the Advancement of Legal Communication.

Bar Preparation Services Stetson helps students with every aspect of bar admission. Three full-time staff attorneys provide individual counseling and group guidance, including workshops that start during your first year of law school. We will help you develop a personalized study plan, and one of our bar preparation professionals will review your sample exam answers. Stetson alumni also provide coaching support to graduates taking the bar exam.

Becoming a great lawyer requires more than just book knowledge. At Stetson University College of Law, you will combine the legal doctrine you learn in the classroom with practical experience. No law school does a better job of preparing students with a solid understanding of legal theory integrated with the practical skills needed to succeed as an attorney.

Competition Teams As a part of our renowned Center for Excellence in Advocacy, Stetson’s competition teams for moot court, mock trial and alternative dispute resolution continue to build upon our historic record of international, national, regional and state championship titles. By participating in Stetson’s interscholastic or intramural competitions, you can hone your courtroom, brief-writing and negotiation skills outside of the classroom.

Excel as an Certificates of Concentration

Many J.D. students pursue a Certificate of Concentration in Advocacy or Social Justice Advocacy. To earn a certificate, selected students must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher in their advocacy course work and must complete at least 21 credit hours of prescribed core courses and electives, among other requirements. Other certificate programs include elder law, environmental law and international law.

J.D./LL.M. in Advocacy Stetson students may now pursue both the J.D. and LL.M. in Advocacy degrees in as little as three years of full-time study. By applying 12 hours of prescribed J.D. courses to the 24-credit LL.M. program, students can earn the advanced legal degree in just one additional semester.

Stetson Journal of Advocacy and the Law The Stetson Journal of Advocacy and the Law is a semi-annual online journal produced by Stetson students. The publication focuses on contemporary issues related to alternative dispute resolution, trial advocacy and appellate advocacy, and is written by preeminent practitioners, law professors and judges. Stetson also publishes the Stetson Law Review, the Journal for International Aging Law and Policy, and the Journal for International Wildlife Law and Policy.

advocate. Clinical Programs Stetson’s 36 clinic and internship programs cover a wide range of legal practice areas. All clinical program students work closely with a full-time faculty member as well as on-site attorneys or judges. Internships place you in off-campus, legal environments where you can observe how these entities operate from behind the scenes. Internship students often perform functions such as reviewing documents, conducting research, and writing memoranda of law. Clinics allow you to practice law under the supervision of a licensed attorney. With the exception of Stetson’s Veterans Advocacy Clinic, all clinics are located off-campus.
