Music Spotlight

Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark History of Modern

Review by James Andrews

Certain things get better with age. Wine, wisdom, cheese, and sex. Possibly the only time cheese and sex have been used in the same sentence, and something that I would like to explore in further detail except for one thing; as I write my ears are currently being assaulted by The Future, The Past, And Forever After. I wanted to love this album, and at times I do. I’ve had a long love affair with OMD, and on a Friday night I enjoy nothing more than blasting Enola Gay on my tape deck while applying my mascara and black nail polish, oh wait that was 1988, I don’t wear mascara or black nail polish any more and I rarely go out on a Friday night. I do still listen to OMD though, albeit on an iPod while driving my Jag to work.

Modern (Part I) is great as is it’s follow up, History of Modern (Part II). And then it goes all horribly wrong. There are moments where this is great. Sister Marie Says is their best song since Enola Gay, it does sound almost exactly like it though, but hell, if I’d written that song I’d keep repeating it as well. Unfortunately it’s followed by a track called Pulse which is possibly one of the worst songs ever written. So is it good or bad? It’s both. It’s nice to hear OMD again, and parts of it sound like the old days, and parts of it don’t. It’s an album that will most likely not be in heavy rotation on anyone’s iPod, but will get some play when the mood strikes.

The main problem with History of Modern is that it tries too hard to be something it’s not, rather like a thirty something speeding down the highway with the top down on his impractical car. He thinks it’s cool, but he actually looks like a bit of a twat. I’m not talking about me of course, I actually look quite cool with the top down.

Perhaps this is the sound of two men with a terrible fear of becoming irrelevant, or perhaps it’s just two men you want to make a quick bit of cash. Either way it could be worse, they could have had Ke$ha do a guest vocal. Blessedly there is not one bit of that awful invention Autotune anywhere on this record.

History of Modern starts off well enough, the first track New Babies; New Toys sounds retro enough and has you singing along by the time the chorus starts up for the second time, but it just sounds a bit….done.

Anyway it looks like the sun has come out, so I’m off to have a drive with my top down and I probably won’t be playing this album.

And that is sort of the way the whole album progresses, it has massive promise, but it never really delivers. Sort of like that hot date who looks great, gym five times a week, healthy diet, great hair, but not the kind of person you’d take to a cocktail party for fear of them opening their mouth. Of course every once in while that person may say something profound and well thought out, and that’s exactly how this album is. History of 16 davidatlanta

The Brent Star Report Stuffed Turkey

Ok so this year, my Thanksgiving was delicious (even the food!). But I am one exhausted turkey!

T

his year, my old college buddies came HERE to visit and let me tell you, those whores wore me out! We never stopped partying. As soon as they landed from Texas (which was Monday), they came to my house, unloaded, made a few cocktails, kee keed about old times, then we ‘eased on down the yellow brick road’ to the Jungle! The cast of the famous Monday night show, THE STARS OF THE CENTURY, did their version of The Wiz (…um…combined with The Wizard of Oz). It was cleverly directed by show director Niesha Dupree who played Evileen, the wicked witch of the West. Child, Miss Neisha wore that crowd out with her dance routine! She had backup dancers (F lying Monkeys) and all…cute monkeys btw…insert banana joke. Everyone played their parts well, down to the four hot boys who played the yellow brick road (rent THE WIZ if you haven’t ‘seent’ it). This was their early show (8pm) which explain why there was so many str8 black folks up in there (in which I was glad to see, I mean, I RARELY see them supporting our community) ...but it didn’t explain why I wore my glittery ruby red high heel pumps sitting on the front row! Tuesday, the out of towners supported me at my weekly show at SHOUT. It was their first time seeing me do drag and they ate it up…and I likes to get ate. Princess Charles, introduced as ‘the gayest man in the universe, had on her usual ten pounds of make up while hosting the show and bringing to the stage special guests Regina Ryan and Shavonna B. Brooks with cast members me and the dancing sensation Alana Kellie. Pumped from having a fun night at SHOUT, they wanted to see some boys. We heard Swinging Richards had a line out the door, so we swung right over to Cheshire’s Bridge to BJ Roosters where those half naked menzes danced on top of the counters as we gulped down our cocktails and…oops, I think I had more fun than them, so…um…let’s skip this part. Ok…so, Wednesday, we went to 3 cery stores hunting down all of the dients for some ‘GUMBO’ that one sisted on making for Turkey day. 26 davidatlanta

different groneeded ingreof guests inTo make up

for it, we went to 3 different clubs that night. First Burkharts for their popular Karaoke Wednesdays, then we swung by Blakes (next time, I need to rent a limo) and yes, we went rrrrrrrrrrrrright on back to Swinging Richards to give it another try. Now this place has really changed since last time I went. The boys were more beefy and somewhat more ‘willing’ and ‘flexible’ with the customers…child, in other words, Lord forgive us for our sins! .Just saying. I’m not sure how we made it home, but we did and got just enough sleep for me to have an unfinished wet dream! Well, thank God it was a beautiful and warm Thanksgiving this year and the gumbo turned out really good too! The combination of Cajun shrimp and Cajun sausage made me feel like I went to New Orleans right quick and back. Of course we had the traditional turkey and dressing, which unavoidably caused us to catch the “itus” so we took a nap before it was time for me to go to work at Burkharts. It was packed! After taking them to the airport on Saturday, I still didn’t rest because I had to perform Saturday at Tijuana Garage and Sunday at Burkharts. Both of those nights I got blowed back stage by legendary Lauren LeMasters and Heather Daniels---now THEY know how to blow! Of course I’m talking about when they blew glitter on my body right before I went on stage. Both of them gave me the dish on the Backstreet reunion at the Jungle telling me it was a great turn out AND a fun crowd. I hope I get to catch the next one. Well kids, I am exhausted! I’m turning my phone off for a minute to catch my breath! But I must say, one of my favorite moments I had with my out of town friends was at the table when we all took turns to share with everyone what we’re grateful for. You know, life moves so fast, that it’s so easy to forget all the blessings you have. Next time you wanna complain about something, think about where you could be in life and what you could be without!

When I was eight years

old, I saw the film Who Framed Roger Rabbit? While my peers were engrossed in the idea that cartoons were interacting with human beings, I was completely mesmerized by one particularly sexy cartoon character; the sultry, the animated, Jessica Rabbit. My first real crush was on a fictional redheaded bombshell. Pathetic. Anyways, while my friends were painting their fingernails, bedazzling their flare jeans, playing mall madness, and eating pizza rolls, my eyes were glued to the television screen observing Jessica and her every voluptuous move. A few years later, She’s All That came out, starring the teenage heartthrobs Freddie Prinze, Jr. and Rachael Leigh Cook. As my pubescent girlfriends giggled over Freddie’s dark eyes, perfect hair, and rock hard body, I was transfixed on Rachel Leigh Cook’s character, Laney Boggs; the morose, eccentric, and responsible art student. I began to notice a trend as puberty was coming to an end, and my adult life began to take shape. I was 36 davidatlanta

changing, and my interest in women was growing. My female counterparts were keeping themselves busy by exploring makeup, flirting, and flaunting their rapidly developing breasts, and secretly trying to emulate the heartbreaking tactics of my best friend, and the “big man on campus”, Brent. Growing up in a conservative, small town in Ohio made exploring girls virtually impossible. It wasn’t until my senior year of high school that I finally found the courage to ask a girl out. She was absolutely beautiful; petite with big, doe eyes, rosy cheeks, and dreads. She was incredibly smart, funny, and talented. She had traveled all over the world, and was planning a trip to India when I met her. I can still remember the first time I saw her. She was sitting in the advanced art class sketching images of endless power lines in her sketchbook, listening to indie tunes, and wearing Birkenstock sandals. She was a vision. Senior year came to an end, and college was right around the corner. When the summer was over, we said our goodbyes and went our separate ways. If it

wasn’t for her, I would have never had the confidence to come out and be the woman that I am today. Being with her seemed so natural, and it was because of the comfort I found in her ability to just be, that I was able to discover and hold on to who I truly was; my highly experimental, slightly deranged, artistic, accepting, and loving self. I left Ohio and went to college on a basketball scholarship. I was suddenly surrounded by lesbians nine months out of the year, for at least six hours a day for four years. I was a fine art major. The combination of the athletics and the art environment made it nearly impossible for me to not become involved in the LGBT community during my metamorphosis. Throughout my college experience, I dabbled in this and that, and exposed myself to an immense amount of opportunities where I could meet people from all races, sexes, and backgrounds. I fell in love with a woman who was in the process of transitioning, and through her and our experience together, learned how to accept and love people for who they are on the inside, rather than their exteriors.

for

WOMEN, by

After all, our bodies are just our “houses, and though it may be nice to have an extravagant beach house on the coast, it is just as fulfilling to have the interior’s (heart and soul) light glow so magnificently that it embraces everything it touches. Four years later, here I am in Atlanta; the small town girl, with big dreams, writing a lesbian column. I have met some truly beautiful people since I have moved to Atlanta. I am extremely proud of my recent BFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design, my tiny, yellow apartment next to Piedmont Park, my incredibly beautiful, intelligent, talented, and challenging boyfriend, and my fabulously gay friends- But most of all, I am extremely proud and honored to have this opportunity to provide the lesbian women in Atlanta with a source for content with substance, information on entertainment, politics, culture, and arts, and the opportunity to get involved in the community. I look forward to serving you and Atlanta, and I am excited to witness the growth within the lesbian community.

La Nota Rosa

AL SOBRINO SE LE ARRIMA... parte 2 by Luis Chiruco

Y

Jason Mraz Contributes “Winter Wonderland” to A Very Special Christmas Series Benefiting Special Olympics Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Jason Mraz is the latest in a stellar group of recording artists who have contributed a track to the A Very Special Christmas holiday music series benefiting Special Olympics, the world’s largest movement dedicated to fostering the acceptance and inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities. His recording of “Winter Wonderland” will be available on iTunes for the first time in the U.S. starting TODAY. The track will also be offered as a bonus to the purchase of 2009’s acclaimed A Very Special Christmas Volume 7, featuring young superstars Colbie Caillat, Carter Twins, Charice, Miley Cyrus, Kristinia DeBarge, Gloriana, Vanessa Hudgens, Sean Kingston, Leighton Meester, Mitchel Musso, Kellie Pickler, Ashley Tisdale and Carrie Underwood. Mraz, who grew up listening to classic Christmas recordings by Bing Crosby, Perry Como and the like, remembers the A Very Special Christmas series. “I noticed the Keith Haring album covers when I first started buying cds, and I had them in my collection. Wanting to be an artist that contributes, I was touched that I was asked to take part. “For me Special Olympics is about embracing the abilities that we do have,” he explained. “It’s the same thing I do with my concerts. I just want to shift the attention back to love and joy and happiness in this now moment, and I really get that Special Olympics does that same thing.” “We are so grateful to the many artists who have contributed to the success of this A Very Special Christmas series,” shared Tim Shriver, Special Olympics Chairman and CEO. “Not only has this music brought joy to the many listeners and fans, but it has brought hope to millions of athletes with intellectual disabilities throughout the world by providing them sports opportunities they never would have imagined.” Launched in 1987, the A Very Special Christmas series has featured recordings of holiday music by some of the most influential and talented artists of the time including U2, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, Madonna, Sting, Bon Jovi, Reba McIntyre, Sheryl Crow, Mary J. Blige, Eric Clapton and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Last year, the torch was passed to a new generation of superstar talent who contributed to A Very Special Christmas Volume 7, the latest edition of the acclaimed album series. A Very Special Christmas was launched in 1987 when record executive/producer Jimmy Iovine decided that a Christmas album would be a beautiful memorial to his father. His wife Vicki suggested that the album benefit Special Olympics, for which she was working as a volunteer. Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss (the “A” and “M” of A&M Records) helped make the first A Very Special Christmas album possible with an advance and a commitment to handle the record without taking 50 davidatlanta

any royalties, and Bobby Shriver signed on as a producer. Keith Haring, one of the great artists of the 20th century, created the Madonna and child artwork that has appeared on every cover. Selling one million copies in its first year, the premier album, A Very Special Christmas, and the subsequent albums in the series, have generated more than $l00 million for Special Olympics, the most ever raised by a benefit recording series. Disbursed in grants by the Special Olympics Christmas Records Trust, the monies raised each year by the albums/CDs/DVDs play a crucial role in the lives of the least-advantaged Special Olympics athletes in countries around the world where there are inaccurate and prejudiced views about people with intellectual disabilities. Executive Producer Bobby Shriver said last year, “If you look back 20-odd years, nothing else has generated as much money, had as much impact and made as much memorable music.” Special Olympics founder Eunice Kennedy Shriver passed away last year, but her words about the artists on the first volume of A Very Special Christmas apply to Mraz and all the artists who have participated in the series. “I am full of admiration for the many artists who have helped us. It’s a great tribute that these men and women say to themselves, ‘I’ll use my talent to help others.’ It’s not easy because they’ve got so many demands on them and every charity wants them, but they’ve helped us, and I’m very grateful.” For more information on Special Olympics, go to www.specialolympics.org. ARIES Your affinity with kids is heightened this week, which could mean almost anything from free babysitting to reconsidering your career choice. Don’t worry -- your amazing energy helps you make all the right decisions.

SAGITTARIUS Take a risk this week -- one you can afford, of course! It’s a really good time for you to ask someone out or to see if your boss is willing to give you additional responsibilities (for additional pay, of course).

TAURUS Your righteous nature is seeing things a bit differently right now-- it’s very definitely black and white, as far as you’re concerned.

CAPRICORN Try not to give away the store this week, even though lots of seemingly deserving supplicants come your way. You’ve only got so much to give, and for now, you need to hang on to some of it.

GEMINI Your righteous nature is seeing things a bit differently right now-- it’s very definitely black and white, as far as you’re concerned.

AQUARIUS Your most important relationship gets a little weird this week, but it should end up being good for all parties. See if you can take any news or big changes graciously, as that’s key to your eventual success.

CANCER You need to deal with your budget issues in a forthright way -- like by deleting that spreadsheet, maybe! Spend as much as you think is needed this week and worry about the consequences later.

PISCES You need to put your blinders on for now-- metaphorically, unless your people are incredibly tolerant. Mind your own business and hope that others do the same, as drama leads nowhere good for now.

LEO You need to deal with your budget issues in a forthright way -- like by deleting that spreadsheet, maybe! Spend as much as you think is needed this week and worry about the consequences later. VIRGO You need to deal with your budget issues in a forthright way -- like by deleting that spreadsheet, maybe! Spend as much as you think is needed this week and worry about the consequences later. LIBRA You should check in with your people -they are in dire need of some leadership, and you can see how to get it for them. You may have to step in yourself, but that’s not so hard for you, is it? SCORPIO You’re dealing with a power issue that hasn’t quite risen to the level of a struggle yet. You may be able to head it off, but the best way to do that may be to simply walk away or admit defeat for now.

Atlanta A-Z

by David C. Muller

EPISODE TWENTY-FIVE:

“Dreidel! Dreidel! Dreidel!” Once upon a time Luke went to a palm reader in Gwinnett County. The palm reader told him, “You must move to Atlanta, Luke, for you will find love there.”

Luke kicked off the 2010 holiday season with a Chanukah party. Last week, during Thanksgiving, Luke had met Dick Zucker, a rich old man from Dunwoody with many sons. Luke had met and gone to bed with Zack Zucker; the Dick Zucker’s biological son; and then, this week, Luke accompanied Zack Zucker to a gay Chanukah party at Congregation Beit Haverim in Decatur. “You know there are all sorts of Jews.” Zack told Luke, “There are Orthodox Jews, you know, the ones with the black hats and the hair comin’ out the sides?” “I met a Jew once.” Luke said, “I met him at some salon in Buckhead.” “There are Reform Jews, Reconstructionist Jews, Israeli Jews, Arab Jews; Jews from India and then,” said Zack, “there are these Jews.” “There are Arab Jews?” Luke was confused, he said, “Isn’t that some kind of oxymoron?” “Oh believe me,” said Zack, “Jews come in all sorts of shapes and sizes and colors.” “And what kind of Jews are these Jews?” “These,” said Zack, “are gay and lesbian Jews.” Luke whistled with wonder, “Gays and lesbians and Jews, on my!” “And it’s Chanukah!” “Chanukah?” Luke only knew of this holiday because of episodes of WILL & GRACE, “What, exactly, is Chanukah?” “It’s a holiday,” replied Zack Zucker, “where we spin our tops.” 60 davidatlanta

“Does that mean that the bottoms get to be the tops and the tops get to be the bottoms?” “Sure,” Zack nodded, “and it goes on for eight crazy nights.” “Are you Jewish?” Luke asked, “How do you know about this holiday? Why do you even care?” “This week is the eight-night time period of Chanukah. Sometimes Chanukah comes late in December; sometimes it comes right after Thanksgiving, like this year. The Jews use a lunar calendar for all the religious holidays.” “A lunar calendar, huh?” “Everything goes according to the moon.” “That’s amazing.” Luke nodded in appreciation, “I did not know that.” “Also,” Zack said, “the guy who writes this series is Jewish. He’s also American, Israeli and possibly even Australian, no one really knows, but he’s a Jew, so he put it in here like this simply for the sake of relevancy.” “Have you met him?” Luke asked, “Have you met this so-called writer?” “No, unh-unh.” Zack shook his head, “Never.” Together, Luke and Zack walked into the Chanukah party and saw a hall filled with people, tables, glitter, gelt and small, happy children excited by the spirit of this year’s joyous holiday revelry. People everywhere appeared fully and hypnotically engrossed in a game Luke did not recognize. Instead of bingo, Black Jack, Uno, checkers, Pai Gow or Mah Jong, they played with a tiny little thing they

spun around and watched with baited breath and rapt attention. Luke had never seen such a sight in all his life; he poked Zack and pointed, “What the hell is that?” “That’s a dreidel.” Zack placed a small four-side spinning top into the palm of Luke’s hand, “The dreidel is an integral part of the game.” Luke looked at the little top; it was made of wood and painted blue. He asked, “What is this writing?” “There are four Hebrew letters on the dreidel.” Zack explained, “Each letter corresponds to something; I don’t know what exactly, at least not in terms of the religion; but, as far as the game is concerned, you either win, lose or draw; so to speak; based on which ever letter you get.” “So it’s like a piece of dice, but with four sides and you spin it around?” “Exactly. Now here,” Zack stuffed a potato pancake in Luke’s mouth, “eat this.” Luke tasted applesauce and talked with a full mouth, “What am I eating?” “They call it a ‘latke’.” Zack said, “It’s all part of the Jewish tradition, so is the song.” A choir of Hebrew Sunday school students started to sing: “Dreidel, dreidel, dreidel; I made it out of clay/And when it’s dry and ready, then dreidel I shall play/Oh, dreidel, dreidel, dreidel…” Luke said, “Cute,” as Zack took a seat at a table. Suddenly; there was a loud gasp! Seated across from Zack, a man with glasses sneered and growled, “Well shalom Zack!” Zack nodded without expression, “Good evening, Rabbi.” “Rabbi!” If Luke had been drinking at this Chanukah party, this surprise would’ve caused him to spit out his drink. Luke tapped Zack on the shoulder, “You’re going to play this dreidel game with the Rabbi?” “Oh I’m not just any rabbi,” the man with the glasses rose to his feet. He wore a yarmulke on his head and, to Luke’s surprise, he was short. “I am the Rabbi here.” He said, “I’m Rabbi Joshua Lesser and please allow me to introduce the guest for this special Chanukah episode.” The Rabbi graciously waved his arm in presentation, “Seated to my right is Harel Skaat, the most recent Israeli contestant in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Oslo, Norway.” Luke took one single look at Harel Skaat: Luke winked at this Israeli hottie, he said, “You’re cute.” The Rabbi said, “Harel Skaat just came out of the closet to great fanfare back in October.” Zack nodded, “Finally.” Harel Skaat has a line here: “Yes, of course I am gay. But most of you knew that already anyway, didn’t you?” “Hey Harel,” Luke licked his lips and salivated over this hot young Israeli singer. Luke said, “I want to spin your dreidel!” Harel Skaat made a ‘nouk’ sound as he jerked his head in passive disinterest. He waved a slender finger at our hapless hero and said, “Not in your life.” “Figures,” Luke shook his head. “You’re still hot, though, despite your world famous arrogance!” Tune in next week for EPISODE TWENTY-SIX: “A is for Arrogance” “ATLANTA A to Z” would LOVE to hear from you! 61 61 davidatlanta davidatlanta

AMERICA’S NEXT TOP PORN STAR By Mark Bruno In a few weeks, Idol will continue its search for America’s next pop star. Meanwhile, somewhere in New York, Tim Gunn is pressing his suit for another season of America’s Next Top Model while in Los Angeles, RuPaul is fluffing her feather boa in preparation of the third search for America’s next drag diva. So why is no one looking for what many gay men consider of at least equal importance - America’s Next Top Porn Star? Well, we did, and here are the leading contenders

From 1 to 10, how would you rate yourself as a porn star? A three. Why so low? I’m really a singer, though I guess I’m making a bigger name for myself in porn. (Laughs) What makes you stand out from the rest of the boys in porn? I’m not an actor. I am 100% genuine. The sex I have on camera is the same sex I have in my bedroom. Did you always know you wanted to be a porn star? I always had a big interest in porn. When the first offer came, I didn’t hesitate a minute. I was excited about all the sexy guys I would meet and the fun. Is the money good? It depends. You need to be a good business man and excel at the art of negotiation. Do gay guys treat you like a rock star? No. Most guys assume that because I do porn, I must be arrogant as hell and an asshole. Do you like when guys recognize you? I think I do. It’s flattering and gratifying to know that the work is getting attention. Would you date a fan? Sure! If he is hot, I would definitely date a fan. Do you prefer to shoot scenes on top or on bottom? Totally depends on my film partner. Some are damn good bottoms and some are real hot tops. I like to enjoy guys at their best. 72 davidatlanta

Carsten Andersson

Is it less work being on bottom? No, even though the top decides the movements, you still have to re-act to what he does in a way that looks like you’re enjoying it. Does a director shouting out moves take the fun out of the deed? I’ve had directors shout out moves in a way that really turned me on. What do you do to keep it up? Remembering great sex I had in the past. Are there fluffers on set? I’ve never seen a fluffer on set. If a co-star does something you don’t like, or touches you in a place you’d rather they not touch, can you yell cut? The director usually asks us before the shoot what we like and don’t like. What’s one thing you’ll never do on film? I’m not sure there is anything I wouldn’t do. I’m pretty open minded. Is having ‘sex like a porn star’ as great as it sounds? It is. Carsten appears in Lucas Entertainment’s “Trapped in the Game”. Visit http://carstenandersson.com/. Be sure and catch the final installment next week featuring Nicco Sky!
