Paul Stephen Benjamin

Dark Black

Dark Black presents a series of latex-on burlap hanging installations that exemplify Benjamin's ability to challenge viewers' perceptions through color, scale, and the use of different textile mediums.

Dark Black places viewers at the heart of some of the most crucial dialogues circulating in our society today, instilling a desire for contemplation and awareness.
Paul Stephen Benjamin shows that black cannot be understood in one way; it requires patience and dedication to unravel its complex nuances. Although it has long been understood as representing lack or absence, Benjamin reveals that black is infinite. - Stephanie E. Goodalle, Burnaway

Benjamin earned a BA from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and an M.F.A. from Georgia State University. In 2012, Benjamin’s video on stacked televisions and monitors was the entry piece for the acclaimed exhibition The Dirty South at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond. Other exhibitions of particular note include State of the Art at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, AR; Great Force at Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond; Reinterpreting the Sound of Blackness at Telfair Museums, Savannah GA; and Black is the Color at the High Museum of Art, Atlanta.
