2015 UAlbany Volleyball Media Guide 2015 OUTLOOK Last season, the UAlbany volleyball team was two sets away from returning to the top of the America East Conference. In 2015, UAlbany seeks another chance to earn its first conference title since 2011. In 2014, UAlbany tied for second place in the America East Conference, the 11th-consecutive year the Great Danes have earned a share of first or second place in the league. UAlbany defeated Binghamton in the America East semifinals and tied UNH in the title match before falling 3-1 in Durham. UAlbany finished the season at 10-17 overall and 7-5 in the America East. The Great Danes will have a lot of new faces this year, adding nine newcomers to six returners for the 2015 season. UAlbany head coach MJ Engstrom returns a pair of all-conference players, an all-rookie team member and four starters from in 2014 in hopes of returning to the top of the America East. HITTERS Though the unit returns its leader, UAlbany will have a lot of new faces swinging next to the antennae. Back to lead the unit is team captain and 2014 America East All-Conference First Team outside hitter Laini Leindecker, who led the team with 348 kills and 25 service aces last season, leading all returners with 354 digs. The junior earned 16 double doubles last year and finished with double digit kills in 24 matches in 2014. Joining the team is junior transfer Shannon Hurley, coming to UAlbany from Wisconsin-Green Bay. She was the 2013 Horizon League Rookie of the Year, averaging almost three kills a set in her two seasons. In total, she earned 464 kills and 129 digs for the Phoenix at outside. Two freshmen join the team as hitters. Swinging from the right side will be Chloe Lamb, an all-state honoree after hitting .289 and 339 kills and 151 blocks in 2014 with Bedford High in Michigan. A three-time all-state player in Arizona and USA Volleyball Junior Nationals competitor for six years, Lyndsey Weiler will serve as an outside hitter from Thunderbird High. MIDDLE BLOCKERS The rank and file in the middle will see a fusion of returners and newcomers for the Great Danes. Junior Amanda Dolan earned 2014 America East All-Conference Second Team honors after being one of two league players with triple digit kills and blocks. She hit .251 with 243 kills and 109 total blocks in 2014, earning a block in every UAlbany match. Also returning is senior team captain Tatum Jungsten, a three-year starter in the front row. Earning a block in every UAlbany match last season, Jungsten finished with 135 kills and 83 blocks. At 210 career blocks, she is just 24 away from entering into UAlbany’s top-10 blockers of all-time. Two freshmen fill the ranks in the middle. From California comes Akuabata Okenwa, who finished with 152 kills for Quartz Hill High, leading the Rebels to a CIF Southern Section semifinal berth in 2014. Also from west comes Dominique Fisher, a product from Colorado who led Falcon High in blocks her last two years and was an academic all-state honoree. SETTERS UAlbany brings back its two primary setters from 2014 plus adds one more to the mix. The main setter the last two years, junior Mikala McCauley, the America East Elite 18 winner for volleyball in 2014, finished last season with 895 assists, 20 service aces and 277 digs. She currently ranks eighth all-time in UAlbany history in assists.

2015 UAlbany Volleyball Media Guide 2015 OUTLOOK A 2014 America East All-Rookie Team member, sophomore Emily Lopes played as a setter and back row rotation player last season to earn 248 digs, 139 assists and 11 service aces. Joining the unit is freshman Paula Pinto, Engstrom’s first-ever player from South America. As a member of the Colombian National Team, Pinto has competed in over a dozen national championships with her squad. LIBEROS/DEFENSIVE SPECIALISTS The team’s biggest changes will come in the back row of the rotation with the departures of three-time America East Defensive Player of the Year Viktoriia Stroilo and Lauren Spreen. The unit’s lone returner is sophomore Elizabet Genis, who served as the team’s reserve libero last year. Genis played in five matches last year, finishing with 29 digs and three service aces. Adding to the unit is a trio of freshmen. A member of the U20 Puerto Rican national team, Nicole Otero looks to follow in the footsteps of Laurie Gonzalez. Otero previously led the Avoli 17U team to the AAU Puerto Rico Grand Prix title. Also on the team is a pair of New Yorkers: Gabrielle Hansen was the 2014 Tonawanda News Athlete of the Year and the school record holder in digs at North Tonawanda, while Emily Zimmerman led Penfield to the Section V Class AA title match three times, including winning the championship in 2014 and taking the team to the state finals. COACHING STAFF Engstrom is back for her eighth season as the head coach of UAlbany, leading the team to three America East titles and an 82% conference win percentage. Two new assistant coaches will help the team for the 2015 season. Josh Pickard comes to UAlbany after three years at Montana State and a year at Ohio in the same role. Traci Vandegrift, a UAlbany graduate of 2012, continues with the program after serving as the team’s graduate assistant the past two years. SCHEDULE UAlbany is set for four in-season tournaments and a full conference slate for 24 matches before the America East Tournament. The team will play in four tournaments across four different states, beginning the season with the Ball State Active Ankle Challenge in Indiana, taking on Ball State and New Mexico on August 28th, following with Belmont the next day. The Great Danes follow with the Golden Flashes Classic, playing Oakland, Kent State and Indiana State, the Colgate Classic, facing Yale, Rutgers and Colgate, and the Marquette Invitational, going against IUPUI, Marquette and Wichita State. After opening conference play on the road at Binghamton on September 25th, the Great Danes have their home opener against UNH at 7 p.m. on October 2nd. UAlbany will play home-and-away matches against each of its conference foes Binghamton, Hartford, New Hampshire, Stony Brook, UMass Lowell and UMBC, with Senior Day set for November 8th at 2 p.m. vs. UMBC at the University Gym. The America East Tournament will be hosted by the conference regular season champion on the weekend of November 20-22nd. The top-four in conference play will play in the two-round tournament. The winner of the America East Tournament will earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

2015 UAlbany Volleyball Media Guide MARK BENSON

University at Albany Vice President/Director of Athletics The University at Albany named Mark Benson as director of athletics on August 20, 2014. Benson, 45, became the University’s second AD since the program entered Division I sports 15 years ago. As director, Benson, who previously was the senior associate athletic director at Old Dominion University, provides leadership for UAlbany’s NCAA Division I, 19-sport intercollegiate athletics program and its scholar student athletes. Following a nationwide search, Benson took the reins of the University’s diverse athletics programs from outgoing AD Dr. Lee McElroy, who announced his retirement in June of 2014. “It is important for UAlbany to engage an athletics leader who has a demonstrated background for combining success in sports with high academic achievement. Mark Benson is well qualified to head a program that values the integrity of the collegiate athletics experience,” said University at Albany President Robert J. Jones. “We have an outstanding athletics program with many benefits and a great legacy on which to build. The University community extends a warm welcome to Mark and his family.” Benson also served as the assistant vice president for Athletic Development at Old Dominion, and has served in this capacity since August 2006, and was an adjunct professor in the Sports Management Program. During his time at Old Dominion, Benson was responsible for budget preparation and administration, as well as providing sport supervision for men’s and women’s sailing. During Benson’s tenure at Old Dominion, the Athletic Endowment grew more than $16 million and the Old Dominion Athletic Foundation annual fund grew from $400,000 to $4.1 million. Benson was responsible for soliciting seven $1 million plus gifts to athletics, as well as numerous significant commitments from donors. Prior to his time at Old Dominion, Benson worked at Coca-Cola Enterprises, Inc. as an Educational Channel manager. In his role with Coca-Cola, he managed the Educational Channel for the Commonwealth Division, which covers sales centers from eastern Delaware to eastern North Carolina. Benson developed financial and marketing proposals as well as negotiated beverage contracts with colleges and universities within his division. Benson and his wife Hunter are the parents of three daughters, Vandy Grace, Lydon and Hannum. He is a graduate of North Carolina State University. “I am excited to join the University at Albany athletics program at this stage in its growth and potential,” Benson said upon his hiring. “My family and I feel warmly welcomed by the UAlbany community, and I can’t wait to settle in and get to work.” “I’m pleased to welcome Mark to the University at Albany and the America East Conference,” said AE Commissioner Amy Huchthausen. “UAlbany has a robust athletics program and he takes the AD title at perfect time to build from a position of strength, both within the conference and nationally. I look forward to working with him as he moves the program forward.”

A member of the America East Conference since 2001, 17 of the school’s 19 varsity teams are eligible for conference championships and NCAA post-season competition. Women’s golf is an associate member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, and football, a Division I FCS program, enters its second year as an associate member of the Colonial Athletic Association in 2014 after competing in the Northeast Conference for the past 14 seasons. UAlbany has won 83 conference championships and produced 37 NCAA Tournament teams since moving to Division I in 1999.

Bob Ford Field, completed Fall 2013

The 2014-15 season saw UAlbany finish in the top-50 of the Capital One Standings, earning nine conference championships and six NCAA Tournament appearances. The field hockey team earned the SUNY system’s first Final Four team in the Division I era while the men’s lacrosse team won an NCAA Tournament game for the second-straight year. UAlbany earned a top-2 finish in 12 of its 19 sports in conference play.

championship and the Gridiron Classic.

In the 2013-14 season, UAlbany continued its strong athletic performance with its third-consecutive America East Commissioner’s Cup, winning eight America East championships and competing in four NCAA Tournaments. The Great Danes earned NCAA victories in men’s basketball, men’s lacrosse and softball, also winning league titles in women’s basketball, men’s and women’s indoor track & field and men’s and women’s track & field.

The quality of UAlbany’s athletic program is evidenced by some of the finest facilities in the nation. The indoor and outdoor physical education design is among the most comprehensive in the Northeast. In the spring of 1992, the University opened SEFCU Arena (formerly Recreation & Convocation Center), an $11 million state-of-the-art facility. SEFCU Arena is the home for UAlbany’s men’s and women’s basketball teams, and has a .11 mile indoor track. The 4,538-seat arena also serves as a major venue for community events such as rock and pop concerts, sporting events and University activities. The playing surface on the arena’s three basketball courts and the surrounding track were completely renovated in December 2004.

Celebrating the school’s most successful year in Division I history in 2012-13, UAlbany won a record nine conference championships, while making four NCAA Tournament appearances. The Great Danes also won the America East Commissioner’s Cup for the second time in school history, as field hockey, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s indoor track & field, women’s indoor track & field, men’s outdoor track & field, women’s outdoor track & field, and men’s lacrosse captured conference titles. Football also won its sixth NEC championship and had two players sign NFL Free Agent contracts.

UAlbany has an athletic history that dates back to the late 1890s when the first known intercollegiate teams arrived on campus. UAlbany competed at the college division level prior to the NCAA’s restructuring in 1972. The athletic program moved from Division III to Division II in 1995-96.

Adjacent to SEFCU Arena is the Physical Education Building which houses University Gymnasium; three full-size playing surfaces which can be used for basketball, volleyball, and tennis; four racquetball/handball courts; four squash courts; a swimming pool; a weight training and fitness center with Olympic weights; an aerobic exercise room and a dance studio.

The Great Danes won eight championships in the 2010-11 academic year, including field hockey, volleyball, women’s lacrosse, softball and all four track & field titles. The lacrosse program, among the top 10 in both national polls, won its first-ever league crown and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals. Volleyball, field hockey and softball also made the NCAA field.

SEFCU Arena and Physical Education Building were air-conditioned in March 1996, as the state appropriated funds for renovations and permanent improvements to the University’s facilities. The $2.3 million in funding was prompted by the New York Giants’ decision to hold its football training camp on campus. The project brought together the region’s community in what proved to be a successful partnership.

In 2006-07, the Great Danes had a breakout year as a Division I program with conference championships in men’s basketball, men’s lacrosse, softball, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, men’s indoor track, women’s volleyball and baseball. In the spring of 2007, men’s lacrosse and softball became the first UAlbany teams at the Division I level to record victories in NCAA postseason competition.

The indoor complex is complemented by fine outdoor facilities, highlighted by 2012-13’s substantial additions. The University constructed a synthetic turf field designed for year-round recreational, intramural and club sport activities; a state-of-the-art 8,500 seat multi-sport complex for football and soccer; and a brand new track and field venue.

In 2005-06, men’s basketball produced one of the most significant achievements in the school’s intercollegiate history with its first-ever NCAA Division I berth. UAlbany won the first of two consecutive league titles. The program’s storied turnaround resulted in a strong NCAA showing against No. 2 Connecticut. UAlbany was awarded the 2004-05 Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. Commissioner’s Cup, which annually recognizes the strongest athletic program in the America East. In 2008, football won its fourth Northeast Conference

UAlbany broke ground on the site of what has become two allweather athletic fields in May 2005. “John Fallon Field” is the home to the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams, a sand and rubber infill turf field that stretches 99,450 square feet. An adjacent surface known as “Alumni Turf Field” is used for women’s field hockey in addition to serving as a multi-use recreational field for UAlbany students. The second phase of the complex’s construction, which includes seating for nearly 2,500 spectators, was completed in the fall of 2008.

What is an Extra Benefit? •Any special arrangement made by an institutional employee or booster to provide a student-athlete, or his/her friends or relatives a benefit that is not authorized by the NCAA. Some examples include but are not limited to: •Money, special discounts and/or free or reduced products/services. •Use of a telephone or credit card for personal reasons without charge or at a reduced rate. •Entertainment services such as; movie tickets, and/or tickets to professional sporting events. •Use of personal property such as; beach homes, boats, cars, and/ or stereos. Who is a Prospective Student-Athlete? •A prospective student-athlete (PSA) is a student who had started classes for the ninth grade or above, including students in prep schools, junior colleges and other four year institutions. In addition, a student who has not started classes for ninth grade becomes a PSA if the institution or a Booster provides the individual or the individual’s relatives or friends with any financial assistance or benefits that the institution does not provide to prospective students in general. Two basic rules to follow are: Treat ALL STUDENTS as prospects; ASK BEFORE YOU ACT •A PSA remains a PSA even after he/she signs a National Letter of Intent or Financial Aid Agreement. •A PSA remains a PSA until he/she either attends classes in any term at UAlbany, participates in a regular squad practice or competition that occurs prior to the beginning of any term at UAlbany, or officially registers, enrolls, and attends classes during the summer prior to enrollment. Contact with Prospective Student Athletes All in-person, on- and off-campus recruiting contacts with a PSA or

the PSA’s relatives or legal guardian(s) shall be made only by authorized institutional coaches or staff members. A contact is defined as any face-to-face encounter between a prospect or the prospect’s relatives or legal guardian(s) during which time any dialogue in excess of an exchange of a greeting occurs. Boosters are prohibited from contacting a prospect or the prospect’s relatives or legal guardian(s) to encourage the prospect to participate in intercollegiate athletics at UAlbany. Boosters are prohibited from engaging in the following: •Any contact with a PSA at any time whether in person, by mail or by telephone. •Any contact with a PSA’s coach, principal or counselor to gain information that would assist in evaluating the PSA either athletically or academically, including visiting the PSA’s educational institution to pick up film or transcripts. •Any involvement, directly or indirectly, in making arrangements for or giving any financial aid or other benefits to a prospect or his/her family, relatives or friends (such as gifts, awards, loans, employment, transportation, free or reduced rent or housing, etc.). •Providing entertainment during the prospect’s official visit. •Sending anything to a prospect including letters, cards, newspaper clippings, game programs, post cards, e-mails, etc. (the type of materials that may be sent and who may distribute such materials is strictly regulated by the NCAA); •Any contact with enrolled student-athletes at other four-year colleges or universities for the purpose of exploring their interest in transferring to UAlbany. If a student-athlete enrolled at another institution contacts you, do not discuss the possibility of transferring with the athlete. Immediately tell the student-athlete to contact the UAlbany Athletic Department. The following examples of limited contact are permissible: •Contacts made with a PSA who is an established family friend, relative or neighbor so long as the contact is not arranged by a UAlbany staff member and is not made for recruiting purposes; •An unavoidable, incidental contact with a prospect provided recruiting does not take place, only normal courtesy is involved and the contact is not pre-arranged. •Casual contacts at UAlbany athletic events, if incidental: •Contacts about summer employment only after the prospect has signed a National Letter of Intent or, in the case of a junior college prospect, only after the prospect has graduated or officially left the junior college. •Contact involved in a normal working relationship (i.e., booster who is a doctor or dentist who treats a prospect professionally) provided no recruiting is involved. •Viewing a prospect’s game at your own initiative (must not involve contact with the prospect).

If you have any questions or concerns, on this subject or any other NCAA matter, please contact the UAlbany Athletic Compliance Office. Eryn Cook, Associate Athletics Director of Compliance: ecook2@albany.edu Nikki Branchini, Compliance Coordinator: nbranchini@albany.edu
