Welcome to the latest edition of Here & Now Magazine! By now, you should have seen our newly designed H&N, which we are extremely proud of as the feedback from readers and advertisers is brilliant! In this latest edition we have even more for you, especially as we have increased the size by 8 pages due to demand since launching this new look and increased our editorial content. I have to say that this success is mainly down to the brilliant design of our new team member, Joanne. So, what is there for you to read about this month? Well…it’s that time of year when most of us either want to get fit or lose weight after the excess of the summer holidays; maybe both. So we have an extended feature on health, fitness and weight loss and you will see that Joanne and I have taken up our own 90 Day Challenge on the Body by Vi programme, however there’s lots of different ways to lose the weight and we are profiling quite a few of them. Fashion is all about the fake fur revival and the perfect little black dress. There’s a complete house of beauty all under one roof at Liberties & Co in Bingley and a centre of excellence for hair loss and thinning hair at Hudson Stott Hairdressing in Baildon. There’s an abundance of unique local business in the area, please visit them and support them as there is no need to go out of your local area to get the very best. Our homes section is also much bigger as people start to think about those homes improvements before Christmas and whether you just need to titivate

ARE YOU A

MINDLESS MUNCHER?

A campaign has been launched to encourage consumers to take time to taste their food after research showed that nearly 80% of people are unable to identify even basic sandwiches. Busy, stressed workers are being encouraged to reawaken their taste buds by a leading psychologist after 60% of the population admitted to never or rarely tasting what they ate - 1,000 people were polled. The majority of British workers eat at work most days with just 13% leaving for lunch, with only 28% saying they savour their food and almost half describing lunch as a means to an end to refuel their body. Incredibly, with Britain a multicultural melting pot of global cuisine, awareness levels around food nutrition and healthy eating never higher, it seems the ability to actually taste food is under threat. The scientific research into the UK's lunchtime eating habits was commissioned by food brand Glorious! and led by Dr David Lewis with scientists at Mindlab. The 1,000 participants were able to only correctly identify 35% of ingredients and most did not detect flavour swaps - 93% were unable to tell the difference between beef from Chinese pork, 92% couldn't tell ham from tuna, 82% could not detect Quorn from chicken, while 78% could not distinguish pork from chicken. Researchers found that, on average, 79% of people

4

were unable to detect when basic flavours had been swapped, rising to 88% when people ate whilst distracted and 93% for people eating against the clock. Dr David Lewis says: "The abundance of great flavours food experiences have never been more diverse, yet our findings suggest consumers are lazy when it comes to tasting and appreciating their food. "I doubt there's ever been such a rich tapestry of food and flavour combinations at our disposal, yet we're not savouring what we eat, which is not just a shame but a genuine waste of taste. "Apart from denying ourselves the pleasure that savouring tasty, well-cooked and presented food provides, there are other negative consequences of what Dr Brian Wansink has termed mindless eating." Dr Lewis pointed out that eating inattentively results in insufficient chewing and bypasses the first stage of digestion resulting in indigestion, heartburn and an inadequate intake of essential nutrients. Poor chewing also means we fail to savour and appreciate the true taste and texture of the meal and food goes down so rapidly that we have in fact overeaten by the time the stomach tells the brain it has had enough, causing unwanted weight gain. Top tips to reawaken your taste buds include: * Focus on what you are eating - not the TV * Set aside time to enjoy food. Leave at least 15 minutes for a snack and 30 minutes for a full meal * Chew the food carefully and take small mouthfuls * Avoid talking while chewing. Not only does it prevent you paying full attention to your food but also causes you to swallow air. *Avoid drinking too much while eating. Fluid not only distends the stomach but also dilutes the digestive enzyme in the mouth and the stomach's essential acid * Eat with your eyes as well as your mouth. Anticipating how food will taste not only adds to your enjoyment but also triggers the release of enzymes ensuring good digestion.

THE LITTLE

Black Dress HAVE YOU GOT IT RIGHT?

You probably have heard many fashion experts say that a black dress is one of the must have essentials in womens clothing. But the real issue is if these women are choosing the ideal black dress that flatters their figure. There are so many styles and cuts available for what you may think is just a simple black dress. There is no point of owning a black dress if it is not suitable for your figure. A black dress is perfect to hide flaws. If you have a plump body, avoid back layers and loose clothing. All you achieve is making yourself look wider or bigger. It is preferable to choose fabrics falling fluid and does not fit your figure. The most flattering dress for full figure or an apple is a cross-type or, in English, wraps dress models. If V-neck and the skirt opens up a little in A, it is even better. If you also have thick arms, you should avoid short sleeves, it is preferable to use ž sleeves and the longer the better. If you have broad shoulders consider a black dress with details at the bottom. It is preferable to have embroidered on the skirt or blocks of color at the hem. This can be complemented with a rounded neckline as this helps your shoulders look narrower. Avoid puffy sleeves; these would make your shoulders look even wider. The key is to distract the eye from that area. If you are conscious about your waist and your bottom you need to select a black dress that focuses on your other aspects of your body such as your neck or your shoulders. Choose dresses that have an attractive neckline and flow easily over your body to hide your waist and rear. Black dresses that have slightly puffed sleeves, or fancy necklines detract attention away from the waistline. Empire waist dresses are ideal choices for women who want to conceal their waist line and highlight the better areas of their body. This type of womens clothing can also be worn over jeans or leggings when you feel like donning a more casual and laid back look. Find a dress size below or above the natural waist. Lengthen your torso

6

by choosing an empire cut dress or dropped waist. A deep black dress V neckline helps to bring the attention upward and away fromyour waist. If you have a large bust you can balance your figure by choosing a dress in deep V neckline. If you combine that with a skirt to open at some length reach a better harmony. Make sure the skirt falls above the knee. If you are petite and have a small body frame do not drown yourself in a large black dress. Choose womens clothing that is above or at the knee. Depending on how confident you are of your waist line you could go in for something more figure hugging and fitted. Wear heels with your dress so you gain a little height. Avoid dresses that have embellishments at the waist line. By going for womens clothing that is uniform in colour and the same design from top to bottom, you make yourself appear taller and elongated. If you have a small bust line and a skinny body frame choose a dress that is more embellished from the waist up. Frills and intricate embroidery are great designs that can be added to your black dress. This style of womens clothing makes your bust line seem fuller. The dress that you select should be fitted so it can highlight your thin waist. If you are conscious of your long legs you should choose a black dress that is below the knee and ends at your calves. At the same time you don’t want to look like a nun. Choose a long dress that has an attractive neckline. Wrap around dresses are ideal Womens clothing to fit this style. If you want to hide your arms because you find them out of shape and flabbyComputer Technology Articles, add a nice knitted shrug to your dress. A fancy shrug can hide your arms without hiding your beautiful black dress.

Now that you have understood the ideal types of black dresses think about the one hanging in your wardrobe. Does it suit your body figure? It might be time to retire this black dress and find a new one that suits your body better.

THICKER, FULLER- LOOKING HAIR IN 30 DAYS GUARANTEED CAUSES OF THINNING HAIR There is no single cause of thinning hair; there are many... Thinning hair affects men and women of all ages. The cause is often genetic, and can also be triggered by certain life stages. Hair cells reproduce at a faster rate than any other in our bodies, so they are also sensitive to changes in our health or environment. Addressing thinning begins with understanding what causes and contributes to it, and the early warning signs to look out for.

DISCOVER THE SIX REASONS YOU MIGHT BE EXPERIENCING THINNING HAIR GENETICS - A common family predisposition involves natural, age-related hormonal changes that can trigger hair loss. NUTRITION AND DIET - What you eat can play a significant role in hair thinning. A high consumption of animal fats, rapid weight loss and liquid protein diets can result in a lack of amino acids, biotin, iron, protein and zinc— all of which are essential for healthy-looking hair. ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS - Air and water pollutants, chlorine, metals and minerals may be left on the scalp and hair as we wash with water every day, contributing to thinning. STRESS AND TRAUMA - Stress can produce increased levels of testosterone, which converts to DHT and interrupts the hair’s growth cycle. HEALTH ISSUES - Several underlying health issues can cause hair thinning, including a malfunctioning of the hormone-producing thyroid gland and the natural hormonal changes women experience after pregnancy and during the menopause. MEDICATION - The hair follicle is incredibly sensitive to changes in the body. Any hormone therapy (including birth control) can contribute to hair thinning.

SHINING A LIGHT ON WOMEN'S SHOPPING

SECRETS The deceitful depths to which women stoop to conceal their spending from their partners have been laid bare in a new study. Excuses, secretly stashing away purchases and downright lies are a regular ritual for a shocking amount of women throughout the UK. Researchers quizzed 2,000 women and found two thirds of them relied on excuses to feel better about spending money on themselves. "I haven't bought anything for ages" and "I deserve this" are the most popular pleas trotted out by women after a shopping spree, while a third use a pre-prepared list to justify their spending to their partners - "It's a bargain", "I need this to cheer me up" and "It was on sale" completing the top five.

And a manipulative one in 10 make sure they buy their partner a present when shopping, purely to soften him up so they can spend more on themselves. Three quarters genuinely believe in the power of retail therapy, with the buzz of a bargain proving the strongest high 70% say they love saving money on new clothes, while half feel justified buying something if they can get it at a discount. Almost 50% say internet shopping, with payment taken at the touch of a button, doesn't feel like spending. A third told researchers they don't feel as guilty about shopping online and find it the best way to bag a bargain. Interestingly the research revealed that when it comes to indulging themselves, women prefer to spend money on clothes, shoes and handbags instead of holidays, spa treatments, hair appointments or food.

The research, commissioned by money-saving website LoveFashionSales.com, found "I'll get my money's worth'" or "I really need this" were regularly used, while many are convinced they have nothing to wear. "I've wanted one for ages" and "I'll wear it all the time" rounded off the top 10 excuses for shoppers - a third of whom admitted to reciting their justifications aloud to themselves, ready for a grilling on their purchases.

Company founder Rob Gorton says: "It's amusing to think of women hiding their purchases and the lengths they will go to avoid being confronted on their spending. "Finding something at a bargain price while still getting that new purchase feeling is the best way to ensure women get the treats they work hard to afford, without having to break the bank. "Many women pride themselves on their ability to know a bargain when they see one and in these tougher financial times it's more important than ever to know where to look."

The researchers also found that half the women questioned confessed to hiding their buys and on average have stashed three big purchases in the last six months to avoid being caught out on their spending habits. The bottom of the wardrobe was the most popular hiding place, although four in 10 use a drawer they know their partner will never look in. A fifth of shopaholics stash their guilty buys under the bed, while kitchen cupboards and the bathroom were also popular spots. More than a quarter of women admit to lying to their partner's face about their bills, while the fibs stretch to parents, friends and other family for a sneaky 30%. A bare-faced one in five said they've worn a brand new item and pretended it was old while 20% buy clothes and accessories in the supermarket because they know their partners will think the cash was spent on food.

THE COLOUR OF SUCCESS One of the local businesses helped by Kickstart Enterprise Coach, Mike Whitehouse, is Tiffany Park owner of Tiffany Park the salon in Eccleshill. Tiffany from Eccleshill opened her first salon in Cleckheaton at the age of 21 and built the business up over a ten year period, at which point she sold the business to move to Huddersfield, where over the next 10 years she opened another 3 salons. Eventually Tiffany decided to take a year out and trained for a degree in lecturing at Huddersfield University, enabling her to open her own hairdressing training school. This was an idea she wanted to bring back to her home town of Bradford and so with the help of Mike from Kicksatrt Bradford, she found the perfect premises, wrote her business plan and opened Tiffany Park the salon in Eccleshill. Mike was also there to make important introductions to key contacts who could help Tiffany to achieve her dream and through their monthly meetings, Mike continues to offer invaluable support and together they are now putting everything in place to open the upper floor of the salon with a Tanning Suite and a Beauty Room which will be open from the end of September, and the final piece in the jigsaw will be the hairdressing school which Tiffany is hoping to open next year.

IDLE BECOMES ENTERPRISING! Work has started on creating the Wright Watson Enterprise Centre in Idle, a £1.4 million development in the heart of Idle village. The project will completely regenerate a landmark site that was home to Idle Wesleyan Chapel from 1810 and then Thorpe Methodist Church until its closure in 2008. The centre, due for completion towards the end of November 2014, will incorporate start-up office spaces for budding Bradford entrepreneurs, Idle library and exhibition area, and community space for meetings, training and activities. The extensively landscaped grounds will include a children’s play area. The centre will also contain a heritage room, funded by the Heritage Lottery fund, which will explore the contribution of First and Second World War Veterans from Idle, and create a commemorative garden to honour and remember the sacrifices made. The centre will also contain a heritage room, funded by the Heritage Lottery fund, which will explore the contribution of First and Second World War Veterans from Idle, and create a commemorative garden to honour and remember the sacrifices made. The Centre will be operated by Inspired Neighbourhoods Community Interest Company (INCIC). Additional funding is provided by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), Heritage Lottery Fund, Waste Recycling Environmental Ltd (WREN) and Bradford Council.

Chief Executive of INCIC, Nasim Qureshi said: “I am delighted the Wright Watson Enterprise Centre is coming to fruition after several years of detailed planning and preparation. Bradford has a high proportion of residents setting up new businesses and we look forward to supporting them and helping them to succeed” Councillor Jeanette Sunderland, Chair of INCIC added: “This is a hugely important development for Idle and this area of Bradford. As well as helping local entrepreneurs, the building will become a hub for local people who will be able to access many services and activities in one place” Fiona Spiers, Head of Heritage Lottery Fund – Yorkshire and the Humber said: “The First and Second World Wars affected all corners of the UK and impacted different communities across Yorkshire. The Heritage Room and Memorial Garden within the Enterprise Centre will enable the community to uncover, share and reflect on the contributions and sacrifices made by the local community.”

Boxtrolls is the best animated feature I have seen this year, and one of the most ideologically driven family films in some time. The film focuses on the town of Cheesebridge, overrun at night by the menacing Boxtrolls and greasy exterminator Archibald Snatcher (Ben Kingsley) aims to rid the town of these little, underground dwelling, box wearing, scavengers but when the daughter of politician, Winnie (Elle Fanning), meets a young boy called Eggs (Isaac Hempstead-Wright), who lives with the trolls, she is forced to rethink just how sinister these boxtrolls really are. The film is animated beautifully and is a visual delight for all ages. The characters are memorable, especially the Dickensian

Extraterrestrial (15) After picking up notoriety for their found footage Horror Grave Encounters, Colin Minihan and Stuart Ortiz (known collectively as the Vicious Brothers) have returned with this new Sci-Fi Horror. The alien Horror genre has had a few standouts but is made up of missed opportunities nowadays, with no real standouts akin to Carpenter’s The Thing or Scott’s Alien. Sadly Extraterrestrial is another case of this failure but that said, it has some excellent effects for the low budget and despite the wealth of clichés within, boasts some Saturday night fun. The film sees couple April (Brittany Allen) and Kyle (Freddie Stroma) prepare for a break away to April’s father’s old cabin in the woods (sound familiar?), only for Kyle to drop it on her that his mates are coming along too. All is interrupted though when a craft crashes nearby. The acting from Allen and Stroma is fine, the aesthetics impressive and while the story and dialogue are by the book, at least there is fun to be had, still the hunt for a new alien horror classic goes on…

Horror Highlights this Halloween... Halloween is upon us and whereas in the past we have seen the release of a Paranormal Activity or Saw sequel to celebrate the occasion, this is not the case in 2014. So in absence of those, what films are arriving to frighten cinemagoers this Halloween season:

The Babadook (15)- 24th October This dark, acclaimed, Horror sees single mother (Essie Davis) struggling to cope with the death of her husband, when her son starts fearing a monstrous presence lurking in their home. Lacking clichéd scares and by the books jumps; many are calling The Babadook a modern Horror classic.

Horns (15)- October 29th October Alexandre Aja’s (Piranha 3D) newest film puts its central character on the horns of a dilemma. Horns is adapted from the novel by Joe Hill and stars Daniel Radcliffe as Ig Perrish, a man wrongly accused on the rape and murder of his girlfriend, who uses his newfound paranormal ability to uncover the real killer

Ouija (TBC)- 31st October This first foray into Horror by Hasbro, is produced by Michael Bay and sees a people of friends try and contact their recently deceased friend but realise the Ouija board is far more than just a game, it’s real life.

"A man should look as if he has bought his clothes with intelligence, put them on with care and then forgotton all about them"

IT'S A MAN THING... When it comes to fashion advice, abundant information for women can be found in magazines, TV programmes and catalogues, while men are often left to rely on guesswork. But just as it is widely known that there are certain fashion staples that every woman should have in her wardrobe, like the little black dress, there are essentials that every man should own, too. While the quality and style of these items will vary according to the age and affluence of the individual, the following are "must haves" in any male wardrobe. A classic well- tailored suit For occasions when nothing else is appropriate such as funerals, weddings and other formal functions, a suit is a must for any man's wardrobe. Choose a single-breasted style that will not date. Either black or grey is a good choice and will be both smart and functional. A good suit will last for years, yet with the addition of a smart shirt and tie can be updated to look fashionable at each wearing. A blue or white button down shirt This is another essential for any well-dressed man's wardrobe, to go with the suit or formal trousers. Always in fashion, they give a crisp smart finish to any outfit, and a good tie worn with the shirt completes the look. Try to buy a new trendy tie every year to keep up with fashion, and add it to your suit and shirt to make a snappy new outfit. A good pair of jeans Jeans have been around for years, but at least one pair is still an important wardrobe addition. They look good when new and often even better

24

when worn, and can look smart or casual depending upon what they are accessorised with. Nowadays, a smart pair can be appropriate wear for both day and evening unless the occasion is particularly formal. Make sure that a white T shirt is in your wardrobe to go with the jeans and with the addition of trainers a classic, timeless, casual look is complete. Buy at least one sweater each season There are many styles to choose from; pick one that suits you and you will have the perfect top to add to any style of trouser when a shirt or T shirt will not do. They are also handy to pop over a thinner top when a jacket would be too warm and can look smart draped over the shoulders until needed.

Accessorise well It's not only women who need essential accessories. Good quality brown shoes will last for years and a stylish brown leather belt should last a lifetime. Make sure they are worn together along with black socks. This combination can smarten up casual trousers or jeans as well complement the formal outfit. A good leather wallet is both functional and smart and will last for years. A watch is another accessory that every man needs and is a "must have" piece of jewellery. If budget allows, purchase a smart dress watch for formal occasions and a sports watch for normal wear; if not find a style which will look good no matter what you are wearing. With these basic items in his wardrobe, a man can be confident that no matter what the occasion, he has a look which is not only appropriate but smart and fashionable too.

GOING OUT!

IS THE NEW

GOING OUT! Rewind back to Christmas last year, and remember tearing your hair out in the kitchen, wiping beads of sweat from your brow as more and more guests flood through your front door? Remember the numerous visits to the supermarket, only to realize you didn’t pick up Advocaat or pickled onions? What about the constant cleaning, polishing and mopping in preparation for the onset of your third or forth ‘at home’ this season? Or hows about the price tag attached to entertaining your friends and family in the run up the most expensive day of the year? Have you ever added up the cost of your endless hospitality? I have and I can tell you, it wasn’t pretty (and that’s not even taking into account the new decorations I buy every year or the carpet cleaning bill for the charming stains I’m left with). Now I’m no stooge (but do you think bringing one bottle of wine to a party you will be at for up to 5 hours is cricket? I’ve possibly had to drink more than that due to the stress I’m putting myself under to make sure you enjoy yourself!), I love the festive season and up until now have been more than happy to accommodate the odd soiree here and there, but when I realized the phone doesn’t seem to work both ways and I’d actually hosted and more to the point, bank rolled most of the parties

I’d actually been to I thought it was time to let somebody else do the work! No – the invitations haven’t come flooding in and no doubt my involuntary role as party planner, entertainment provider, time keeper, travel organizer and general dogs body will remain intact, however, this year I will be taking deposits for it! I have had it with the December cleaning cycle, the endless replacing of glassware (I must buy 30 champagne flutes during December), the fact I have nothing to eat in my fridge that isn’t miniature or comes in a box of 30 and that the security guard on the booze isle is looking at me like I have some kind of REALLY big habit. So what’s this great plan I’ve got to save myself the cost and hassle of having a good time this Christmas? It really is very simple – I’m going out! Most restaurants have menus to suit various budgets and choosing to go out for a social gathering during the festive season will invariably be much cheaper and much less effort than organizing a party at home, catering for it and cleaning up after it! Going out – is the new going out!

Luckily enough for me (and you ) there is a wealth of fantastic restaurants and hotels offering a diverse range of options for the party season, right here on our doorstep. Read on for the best of our local hostileries >>>>>> 25

MY THAI MYWORD! We love Thai food, but it's rare we indulge as it always seems a bit of a hassle and an extra expense to get a cab into Leeds, so we invariably end up at a local restaurant eating the same as last weekend and the weekend before! Baring this in mind, I was delighted at the prospect of being introduced to what turned out to be an absolute gem of a place right on my doorstep.

There were four of us in our party and we all agreed on ordering one of the set taster menus - there are plenty of mouth watering offerings on the menu but we thought this would give us a few choices each - and so it did. First came the selection of starters, chicken satay, crispy prawns, angel wings, fish cake and my favourite the pork dumpling. All were sublime, beautiful flavours, perfectly cooked and served with tasty dipping sauces. Then came the Tom Yum Goong Soup, oh my Lord! This was absolutley delicious, really highly spiced and intense flavours with huge juicy prawns and fresh tomatoes, I could eat this soup all day long! Main courses were a mixture of seabass, duck, king prawns and beef dishes accompanied by noodles, jasmine and fried rice. All were really good and there was plenty, way too much infact for the four of us and we can all eat plenty! The service was really extremely good, my glass was never empty and nothing was too much trouble. These guys really know their stuff and being a real Thai food fan, I can definitely say that this restaurant compares favourbly to any of the big hitters in Leeds and beyond. It's my new favourite place and I will count myself as a regular from now on. Take this complimentary £5 voucher and hot foot it down there for excellent & authentic food, outstanding service and great value. Not to be missed!

VOUCHER

We visited on a Friday evening, having made our reservation for 7.30pm. We arrived and were pleasantly greeted by Simon, the owner. It was actually a special evening for us as we were celebrating our wedding anniversary so pop went the Prosecco and we made ourselves comfortable in the plush pre dinner seating area. Having polished off the bubbles we were shown to our table. The restaurant was really quite busy but the ambience remained perfectly relaxed and the staff completely unphased.

Here's to the CORKSCREW!

A useful key to unlock the storehouse of wit & the gate of pleasant folly!

At first glance the subject of wine can seem overwhelming and frankly rather intimidating, what with sniffing the bouquet and judging the finish a novice wine taster could easily be put off. However there really is no need, as all you need to remember is that wine is supposed to be enjoyable, so simply buy the wine you most like the taste of regardless of current fashions or trends. To help you get started there are just three simple steps to remember when choosing a wine: look, smell and taste. But if you have time and the inclination, understanding the basics of wine types, selections, storage and tasting will add new dimensions to your wine experience. A good way to get to know more about wine is to start by taking a grape variety you know, then work your way through different examples from around the world. Lovers of Aussie Chardonnay, for instance, might enjoy barrel-matured white Burgundy. Or if you've already discovered fruit-filled Chilean Cabernet, then you really need to try the aristocratic reds of Bordeaux. Find out for yourself why the wines of New Zealand have become so popular, or experience the everlasting appeal of Burgundy. Just a few rungs up the price ladder, flavours become more intense, making it far easier to stick to a single glass. When exploring, don't be afraid to ask questions of waiters or shop staff - if properly trained they will be full of useful advice. Generally speaking a good wine can be purchased for well under £10 these days, but try to avoid the really cheap offers, as these are rarely the best value for money. Excise duty, VAT, transport and packaging are virtually the same whether it's a basic vin de table or from a prestigious estate. By paying a little extra - say £5 to £7 - you get a

28

big increase in wine quality. If you find the thought of buying wine in a specialist wine shop too daunting, then why not buy from the comfort of your armchair? More people are ordering their wine online thanks to the convenience and range of wines on offer. Online wine merchants invariably provide more information about their wines than you will find on the label when perusing the supermarket shelves. When pairing wine with a specific food or meal there are just a few things to remember. Like a good marriage, wine and food were meant for each other, as each enhances and strengthens the experience of the whole. So why does it feel so daunting to try to pair foods with wines? If you are under the misapprehension that there is a hefty list of rules and guidelines that state which wine can be paired with which food then you are in for a surprise. The truth is there are no rules when matching your favorite wines with your favourite recipes. Yes there are popular matches and wellused pairings of wine and food but ultimately the best match is what pleases your palate. It is truly a personal preference, but if you don't feel confident enough to trust your own taste you can always ask for some more experienced advice. With expert wine merchants available at your fingertips it has become a whole lot easier to learn more about wines and enjoy them at very competitive prices. The only golden rule would be to avoid cheap supermarket wine and you'll discover a little good wine really does go a long way.

Katy who organised the meeting welcomed everyone and was astounded at how many people had turned out. Katy began to outline some of the issues that have caused concern about the Council’s decision to approve the planning application at the ‘planning and regulatory appeals committee on the 4th September 2014 at City Hall. At Simpson Green the land was already designated as safeguarded land to be used for housing in 2026 and there is a solid argument about highways, increased traffic, schools, heritage, conservation site etc. There are many valid reasons why this development 31

WINTER HEATING Get Prepared... It is wise to prepare your home for the winter before the first cold spell arrives. One of the most important things to do is to inspect your heating system for structural defects or signs of damage and deterioration that can hamper its proper functioning. When winter comes it is vital that you have your heaters properly functioning. As you know, having them services in cold season can be more expensive. Install programmable thermostats One of the things you can do to make sure your home stays warm in winter is to install a thermostat. There are so many types of thermostats in the market, and they all have the ability to keep the temperature inside your house within a comfortable range. Of course, you have to set the thermostat manually, but there are those that can be programmed to reduce heater action when you are away to conserve power. Check out your thermostat if it is still working. One problem with old thermostats is that they are significantly less efficient than new models. Modern thermostats use less power and are easier to install.

Replace your furnace or boiler Let us face the fact that things become out of date when they go old. When your heaters are more than ten years old, they may not be providing the same efficiency as new heaters do. Worse, they may have succumbed to long term use. They may be showing obvious signs of deterioration, as nothing is destined to last in this world.

32

If your heaters have been around for 15 years and you have had them repaired several times, think about replacing them seriously. Modern heaters are built to be power efficient. So, they will not use the same amount of power but will provide the same degree of warming.

Consider the size of your house When installing central heaters, the first factor to examine is the size of your house and the number of rooms. The kind of heaters to install depends on how big your house is. Bigger houses demand more powerful heating systems. In houses with multiple rooms, complex systems are necessary, and some homeowners provide dedicated heaters for individual rooms. Many people do not know exactly how to choose the right heaters. A professional should be able to help you should you get confused.

Check your windows Windows are not to be opened in winter or you will suffer from the chill. But check your windows to see if they close tightly. Slits in the windows can cause streaming of cold air into the room, making the heater work harder or making the room feel colder than it should be. Inspecting the windows and walls for holes or slits should better prepare your house for winter.

Consider setting up portable heaters in certain rooms There are rooms at home that will never be adequately heated. For instance, your bedroom may feel uncomfortably cold. A portable heater may be needed.

Safety Precautions! Heaters run by electric power should not be used anywhere near water. So keep them away from the bathroom and laundry area. Do not place combustible and flammable materials near the heater. Better yetFree Articles, put your heater away from curtains and wooden furniture. Do not plug your heater into an extension cord.

Julian Thornhill

Worried about getting a mortgage? You may remember that, in my last article back in May, I wondered whether banks and building societies would tighten their lending criteria. A few months down the line, I can confirm that the answer is most definitely Yes. However, so far – and contrary to what the media would have us believe - there has been little impact on ordinary borrowers. Following the Financial Conduct Authority’s mortgage market review (‘MMR’), all borrowers must now undergo a more rigorous affordability check. Generally speaking you will need to demonstrate to lenders that you can afford your mortgage repayments not just at the current rate, but also if the interest rate were to rise by a full 3 per cent. It’s true that some borrowers will struggle to meet this criteria, but the majority of my customers have been unaffected so far. In my opinion the new affordability test is not that different from the assessments that lenders have already been doing for some time. There is another new regulation too. From 1 October, lenders will be restricted in the proportion of new residential mortgages they can lend at loan-to-income ratios of 4.5 and above. No more than 15 per cent of their new residential lending can be made at these higher loan-to-income ratios. This is likely to affect first time borrowers in London more than anyone else. In fact, it’s quite feasible that such high loan-to-income lending may become the exclusive preserve of London borrowers. I certainly wouldn’t be surprised if this proves to be the case and I don’t think this particular regulation will have much of an impact up north, where borrowers tend to have lower loan-to-income requirements. 34

Watch this space New rules about loan-to-income ratios take effect from 1 October and mortgage brokers such as myself are waiting to see how lenders change their approach. We hope lenders won’t over react – a steady, step by step approach is all that’s called for. But there is a risk – and it’s a big one - that too many lenders may adopt an overly cautious approach to high loan-to-income lending. If they do, borrowers in this category may struggle to find finance. The good news is that only a small number of lenders have changed their policy so far. The jury is out…

We have six retail support outlets in total, these are in Cleckheaton, Pudsey, Otley, James Street and Piccadilly in Bradford and our Unit 5 Furniture Outlet on Mount Street, off Leeds Road in Bradford. Each outlet is run by managers and volunteers, without whose dedication, time and efforts we would be unable to raise as many much needed funds which enable us to continue with our upgrading, refurbishing and expansion projects. We are committed to providing the very best animal welfare possible and we are extremely grateful to all of our fundraisers and volunteers who all contribute towards helping us to achieve this. If you have any unwanted clothing, electrical goods, home items, furniture or bric-a-brac then why not donate them to one of our outlets. We are happy to collect if you have collected in your street, school, playgroup, place of work etc; all that we ask is that everything is taken to one collection point address. The Board of Trustees & management would like to thank all RSPCA staff and volunteers for their dedicated work in the welfare of neglected animals in the Bradford District

It is brilliant to be able to keep you up to date with our activities here at the RSPCA Bradford & District Centre, however we would be unable to do a fraction of our animal welfare work without your generosity and support, so thank you and please continue to offer support where you can. 39

WINTER DRIVING ARE YOU PREPARED? Winter driving cannot be avoided, though it certainly can be curtailed. When the worst of the storms hit, weather warnings may put our journeys on hold. In most cases drivers can return to the road again in short order, dodging snow drifts and hoping that black ice hasn't formed as they skirt from home to work and across town. Whether keeping your driving mostly local this winter or if you are planning a long range trip across your region of the country, you'll want to keep your ears fixed to the weather warnings and updates as your life could depend on it. To that end, we have put together some tips on getting your car ready for a trip including making sure that your headlights are working at peak performance before your begin your venture. For drivers of any age, follow these tips to help maintain safety and improve visibility on the road this winter: 1."Winterize" your vehicle. Change the engine lubricant to synthetic oil, change to winter wiper blades, flush your cooling system with fresh coolant/antifreeze, fill the washer fluid reservoir with de-icer washer fluid and carry an emergency safety kit.

2. Drive with your lights on. If daytime visibility is limited, turn on your headlights to be seen by other drivers. When traveling in snowy weather, remember to brush off your taillights, turn signals and headlamps. 3. Change headlights in pairs before they burn out. Most headlights dim up to 20 percent over time so evaluate yours every year for optimum performance. The end of daylight savings time is a perfect yearly reminder. 4. Upgrade to high performance halogen lighting. SYLVANIA SilverStar(R) ULTRA bulbs are up to 50 percent brighter and increase downroad visibility by up to 40 percent when compared to worn standard bulbs. Studies have shown that whiter, brighter halogen lighting can improve reaction time, increase nighttime visibility and provide better roadside viewing. 5. Check headlight alignment. Misaligned headlights can be distracting and dangerous. Ask your auto service technician to align them for you.

6. Clean headlight lenses regularly. Wash headlight lenses when you wash your windshield. You'll see better at night and in poor weather conditions. 7. Make sure all vehicle lights are working. Have a friend turn on your headlights and signal lights while you walk around the outside of your vehicle. 8. Check your tyre pressure regularly. Whether you park inside or outside, you will lose a pound of tire pressure for every 10 degrees of outside temperature change. 9. Adjust your speed. By decreasing your speed you allow yourself more time to respond in bad weather. 10. Brake carefully. When roads are slippery, brake in a straight line before a curve in the road. Lift your foot from the brake before you steer into a corner. This allows you to steer and not slide through the corner. Don't accelerate away from the corner until the steering wheel is again straight. Ensure that your trip is a safe one by driving defensively and making sure that your car is ready to hit the road this winter.

FINALLY We Love

ow!! Ciao for n

! o a i C

a taste of Italy

The aim is to offer people in the local area a delicious alternative to the corporate coffee shop experience and monotonous pre-packaged food offering currently available on the high street - and that they do!

At Ciao! It's delicious food made just that little bit special, whether you are grabbing a quick breakfast bite on the run or relaxing with friends over a leisurely lunch. Their sandwiches and salads, cakes and pastries, pasta and pizza dishes are not to be missed! Not to mention the Italian tasting plates - sublime! Try a slice of their tempting Pizza al taglio or a luxurious fresh Cannoli Siciliana and you'll see what we mean.

Have you tried

THE SHIBDEN MILL INN

Shibden Mill Inn…what a find. It’s been a long time since we could rave about everything from the location, quality of food and most of all the outstanding customer service at a restaurant. Nothing, and I mean nothing is too much trouble for the team here and they really enjoy and take pleasure in working at Shibden Mill Inn. The owner has discovered and created a little bit of magic

and he would make a fortune training many others in just how it’s done! Can you see a common theme forming from the team here at H&N? We are sharing with you great places to eat where our expectations have not simply been met…they have been surpassed… consistently. See you again at Shibden Mill Inn for Sunday lunch this week!

Angela

Their Italian coffee is ground to order, trained baristas create the perfect espresso. They also offer a delicious range of loose leaf teas, gourmet hot chocolates, luxurious ice cream frappes, retro Italian cream sodas, fruit juices and mineral waters to cater for all tastes. We always look forward to visiting Ciao! Their delcious food alongside friendly service make for the perfect mix.

Dave Living in Idle, I feel like I have plenty of choices when it comes to eating out, however, I do find the majority of them mediocre. The Moody Cow is an exception. I cannot rate this place enough and have become a (almost embarrassingly so) very regular customer over the past year or so. What do I love so much? The menu is fantastic, the place is a pleasure to be in, the food is always fabulous, the atmosphere is perfectly ambient and the prices suit my budget (although I have heard whispers

2 OTLEY ROAD, GUISELEY T 07730 099875

that others think it may be slightly expensive - I disagree). But. What I love most about The Moody Cow is the service. Service means a lot to me in a restaurant, why go otherwise when I can cook a steak perfectly well myself? I can eat amazing food but if I'm served by sloppy staff with a surly attitude you won't see me again. These guys are welcoming, knowledgeable, professional and engaging without being intrusive. Five stars on all counts for me from these guys!
