HERBS AND OILS COMBINED SALADS, SAUNAS, SUBLIME! With the addition of herbs to a variety of oils, a whole new world opens up. Whether it’s the tongue’s palette or visual palette, inside or outside, our skin greatly benefits from the combination of botanical material and botanical oils. A secret as old as humanity itself! Just ask Cleopatra, the Queen of Roses, herself. From time immoral, humans have been dropping flower petals to scent and empower skin oils, for healing foot fungus, eroticising male or female partners, curing whooping cough, as well as enhancing fresh and cooked greens. Herbal oils, whether in the food aisle or bath and beauty aisle, have ALWAYS fetched a nice price. In times past, the price was selflimiting to the very rich. However, herbs and oils are much more accessible today and learning to combine the two is easy to do. Not only good for oneself, they make great gifts too. In this class we are going to make an herbal salad oil and an oil-based, deeply moisturizing herbal skin crème. Have a Pleasant Present

Here’s some of what instructor Violet Young had to say about this course. “This class is about assisting people in understanding that our own personal belief system and self-talk set us up to perceive the world either negatively or positively. We are influenced and become preconditioned by and through our upbringing and life experiences. As this happens so slowly during our lives, and we become resigned to the ‘usual outcome,’ we are not conscious of the patterns being formed. After resigning ourselves to the ‘it’s just the way it is’ way of life, there is often the onset of depression and anxiety. By exploring and learning to recognize our own patterns and triggers as well as recognizing that we can give ourselves options to view situations from different perspectives, we can then be open to make choices that painlessly create new growth and joy. During the class there will be time for personal exploration and sharing of personal experiences by class members.” INSTRUCTOR: VIOLET YOUNG WEDNESDAYS, 5:30-7:30 PM • FEB. 20-MARCH 27 • $45 CENTRAL CAMPUS, NEWPORT

Here’s some of what instructor Violet Young had to say about this course. “This class addresses, in a low-key, understandable and accepting manner, the concept that love never dies, and that connecting with deceased loved ones is possible. The class is suitable for anyone who is open to the possibility of life after death or anyone who may have experienced unexplained events after the death of a loved one but is unsure if they have received actual messages. Love Lives Forever assists participants in becoming more aware of the possibility of messages from beyond the veil.” “In my experience,” Violet continues, “many people have experienced messages and visitations but are often self-conscious or afraid to actually believe it. People who are dealing with grief and loss often suffer loneliness, anxiety and depression. Love Lives Forever helps people to feel less isolated and confused, leading to more self-acceptance and self-love to assist with the grieving/healing journey. I present my own experiences since my husband crossed over on April 6, 2015, as well as personal experiences with other family members. The class is a forum for people to share their own experiences and thoughts about the possibility that they have received messages from their loved ones and to explore their feelings about the experiences. Love Lives Forever is spiritually based however not religious. During the class techniques for quieting the mind, meditating and choosing a medium are offered as well as hand outs and a Resource List.” INSTRUCTOR: VIOLET YOUNG WEDNESDAYS, 5:30-7:30PM • JAN 9 – FEB. 13 • $45 SOUTH CENTER, WALDPORT

Larval Fish Biology

Fish begin their lives as small planktonic larvae, growing and developing through several unique phases to become the adults we see in the ocean and find on our dinner plates. This course builds an understanding of the early life history of fishes by examining larval fish anatomy and adaptations for survival. You will get hands-on experience observing fish larvae in Hatfield Marine Science Center’s labs, and you will work with your classmates to create a scientific notebook for larval fish identification. By the end of the course, we hope you will have a better appreciation of the many different forms and functions of Pacific Northwest fish larvae. ‘Seatauqua?’

The Seatauqua (see-TOK-wa) was a series of workshops, lectures and excursions that ran for decades in Newport. First coordinated by Oregon Sea Grant, the programs encouraged chautauqua-style discussions by all participants about arts, sciences, coastal ecology and more. In 2014, with the help of Heather Fortner, the late Maryann Bozza, and others, Oregon Coast Community College and the Hatfield Marine Science Center began the process of reviving Seatauqua, with special classes and workshops. Other Seatauqua-themed arts and music classes can be found elsewhere in this publication. To suggest a topic for a future course, or to become an instructor, call 541-996-6222.

To get started, attend a mandatory two-session orientation at either location (see below). A student must be at least 16 years old to attend classes or take the test, and 16- and 17-year-olds must complete a Home School application from Linn Benton Lincoln Educational Service District, send it back to LBL-ESD, then return the Authorization form to the testing examiner to “unlock” the test. It’s never too late for college! County residents aged 65 and above get free tuition for credit classes on a space-available basis and taken for an audit. Auditing is taking a class without receiving a grade or credit. You can only audit a class if there are still seats available on the first day of class. This 100% tuition waiver does not cover lab fees, books, or other class fees. Many classes fill up early, so space is not guaranteed. To use the waiver, find the class you’d like to take in the class schedule, but don’t register yet. Print out the senior waiver form and contact the instructor on the first day of class. Get the instructor’s permission to take the class and have her/him sign the form, then return to Student Services in Newport or Lincoln City. After the waiver has been applied to your account, log into myOCCC and pay any fees not covered by the waiver. Registration prior to the first day of class will void the waiver. Note: you must be an OCCC student to use this waiver. Becoming a student is easy – simply fill out OCCC’s online application for admission. For details about the program, visit oregoncoastcc.org/senior-waiver.

Social Media: Keeping Up with the Changes

Are you using the right social media channels for your business? There are many platforms, they each work differently and can provide different results for varying types of businesses. They also have different tools, strategies, clients, and markets. Just this winter, Facebook unveiled a series of changes to its algorithm – changes that have profoundly affected how businesses need to use the tool to market effectively on Facebook. How can a small business keep up and have the time to be successful while doing all the other operational issues required to thrive on the Coast? This class will cover the many changes, updates, and tools each platform uses (including Facebook’s recent major changes) and how to determine which Social Media tools may work best for you and your business. In a world of mass marketing and noise, how can you really talk directly to clients, and reach them just when they are in the market for your product?

Did you pay a lot for a website and still can’t be found on a Google search? Do you know how much traffic your website is getting? Where is that traffic coming from? What search words do people use to find your services? Google Analytics is a free, powerful, independent tool that can provide you with real answers to how and when visitors are finding your website, and what type of users visit the site, and your social media platforms. Prerequisite: A website with Google Analytics, and access to your report with at least 30 days of traffic – students unsure of how to load Google Analytics on their site should contact the instructor prior to class. To do so, simply call 541-994-4166. This class will cover: • How to read your Google Analytics report • How to evaluate what different reports mean • How to filter out spam traffic from the report • How this information can be used to improve your website • Learn which pages on your site generate the most visits • Understand bounce rate, and how it affects your ranking • What search terms are sending clients to your page • How to block foreign traffic from your site While no one can guarantee Google placement, knowing and understanding your website traffic and the behavior of those clients that are actively using your site can help you improve your results and, ultimately, grow your sales online and in-person. Save Yourself a Seat, for our OregonSaves Workshop

The Oregon State Treasury is launching a new retirement savings program called OregonSaves. OregonSaves is a simple and convenient way for workers to save for retirement. It allows employees to save a part of each paycheck in their own, professionally-managed retirement account through payroll deductions at work. The account is also portable, allowing employees to take their account with them from job to job. Any business with employees in Oregon that doesn’t offer a qualified retirement plan will need to facilitate the State’s program for its employees. The program began in July 2017 with a small pilot group of employers. It is scheduled to continue to roll out in phases to all Oregon employers through 2020. Wondering when your Lincoln County business has to be participating? Check the diagram, above. If your business has five employees, for example, you need to be set up by November 2019. Don’t miss this free workshop, where you can ask questions and be fully prepared to comply with this new statewide program.
