CRAFT ALE, COMMUNITY AND COMEDY (Growler Stop owner making plans for 2024) By Nick Buckley

Dartford’s Nick Byram has just celebrated his third Christmas as owner of the Growler Stop craft ale bar in Spital Street. He’s reflecting on what’s happened since 2021, but also restless with plans for 2024. It’s still all about the beer. Nick relishes those moments when a new customer steps inside and says ‘I didn’t realise it was like this in here’, whilst taking in the array of shiny taps and the beer menu projected on the wall above. Nick says, “It’s all very well having 30 taps. But you’ve got to make that accessible to people. For example, we’ve got beers like Kona Big Wave, from Hawaii, and Lervig House Party from Norway, that lager drinkers will find quite approachable. Then I can start to tempt them with IPAs, hoppy citrus flavours, hints of tropical fruit… and so on”.

The other priority for Nick was to make the Growler into a community, and a supportive part of the wider Dartford community. He has a growing army of regulars, but also groups who turn up together, or for whom he has hosted events. That might be rugby, football or cricket clubs, Dartford Arts Network, a Labour Party quiz one week and Conservative councillors or Green Party members meeting up the next. “We’re definitely non-partisan”, says Nick, who is also on the steering group for West Hill Neighbourhood Watch. He says “That’s a win-win, if we can make our neighbours feel safer… more connected… and help keep our surroundings clean.”

This almost casually reflects the Growler’s global offering. But there’s a strong British beer presence too, including from Nick’s own Caveman brewery. Also, at this time of year, there are comforting stouts and porters with coffee and toffee flavours, that you can snuggle down with whilst it’s cold and wet outside. 8

www.dartfordliving.com

In spring and summer, the Growler stretches out into the outside space, drawing the curious gaze of top deck bus passengers looking down on the smoking barbecue and a crowd appreciating bands on the outside stage. “We’ve had something at least once a month, and the Comedy Club [last Sunday evening of every month] is now a fixture, bringing in rising talent from the London circuit.” Nick has realised his ambitions to offer good quality pop-up food. Uncle Beef, based in a butcher’s shop in Crayford, is now a regular visitor with South African style barbecues, and the Amalfi Pizza trailer brings a wood fired oven and authentic Neapolitan pizza every Friday evening. What’s next? “More ‘tap takeovers’, where we feature many beers from a single brewery, ideally combined with a chance to ‘Meet the Brewer’ and ask questions, at the start of a Friday to Sunday event. “By all means follow us on social media [Instagram: growlerstopkent, FB: Growler Stop Kent] to see what we’re up to” says Nick “but the best thing to do is just come in, have a look, tell us what you like to drink, and let us recommend something to fit your mood and maybe expand your beer horizons. Before you know it, you might have become another member of our growing, diverse, community”.

NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS: THE DARTFORD WAY By Bridget Arnold

I’m one of those people who loves to make at least one new year’s resolution. Often a list that I colossally fail at and give up on by February. So, this year I’m going to look close to home for help. How can my town keep me on track to achieve my 2024 hopes and dreams to be Fitter, Happier and Greener?

shopping is, I can’t resist a pedal through the park, maybe going via the beautiful Acacia Halls and river, passed the museum and the library that smells like a library should.. Like Books! Central Park always has wonderful gardens. Our gifted gardeners make them pretty at any time of the year, but they’re breathtaking during spring and summer; people are forever snapping photos and sharing them on social media. The screams and shouts from Buccaneer Bay tell me that either the kids are having a great time, or the parents aren’t. The café is a great pit stop but it’s the open space, beautiful old gnarly trees and quiet spots by the river that give you much needed time to stop, stare and .. breathe.

I love a pedal down town on a market day, especially at the weekend, after spending a week crunched up in front of a computer. My first stop is the charity shops for books, clothes and bits for the house. There are 6 shops close to the market, many of which are better presented than some regular shops. You can pick up top quality clothes for next to nothing and there’s a great satisfaction in recycling and re-using. The atmosphere is always friendly; everyone has time for If there’s time, I’ll squeeze in a circuit round the lakes, you and the banter with the volunteers is cracking. saying hello to the walkers, friendly anglers, the ducks and the geese. Extra special are the days when there’s street entertainment keeping company with the new brassy Mick and Keith at One-Bell Corner. By now my bags are full, so I load up my bike and head home. I look back down the High Street at the all-yearround fluttering bunting, and say to myself ..

With such a blend of beautiful old and new, nature, business and all types of people, I’m lucky to live in a town that has so much to offer.

RECIPE

CHOCOLATE & IRISH CREAM CHEESECAKE By Debbie Dickinson from the Little Lavinia Bakery

This was a favourite of ours before we had children so I thought it was about time I made it again. It’s fairly rich so you won’t need a very large slice – although you will keep going back for more! It would probably work as well with other cream liqueurs so feel free to substitute the Irish Cream for one of your choice! You will need: 200g Digestive Biscuits 50g Chocolate Maltesers, plus extra to decorate 100g Butter, melted 400g Cream Cheese 50ml Irish Cream Liqueur (optional) 200ml Double Cream 100g Icing Sugar 200g Plain Chocolate

down in the bottom of an 8” loose bottomed or silicon cake tin (lined with a circle of greaseproof paper, and ‘buttered’ around the sides) Place in the fridge while you make the cheesecake. To make the cheesecake element: Put the Chocolate in a microwaveable bowl and ‘heat’ in 30 second intervals until ¾ of the Chocolate has melted. Stir the Chocolate and allow the rest to melt with the residual heat of the melted chocolate. Whisk the Double Cream and Icing Sugar in a bowl until it leaves soft peaks when you remove the whisk. In a large bowl beat the Cream Cheese with the Irish Cream Liqueur - just until smooth, then gently stir in the Chocolate, followed by the whipped Cream. Spoon onto the prepared biscuit base and leave to set fully in the fridge.

If you have cream to spare, whisk some more up and What to do: use to decorate your cheesecake – along with the exTo make the biscuit base, place the Digestive Biscuits tra Maltesers. and Maltesers in food processor and blitz until broken up. Alternatively, you can put them in a food safe bag Enjoy! and ‘bash’ with a rolling pin or similar. Transfer into a bowl and stir in the Melted Butter. Press 24

Happy New Year! Now that the decorations are down and the diets have begun, it’s time to start making some exciting travel plans for 2024. With the abundance of travel companies advertising their offerings during this peak booking period, it’s crucial to be mindful of where and how you book your holiday. At this time, it is common to see these advertisements on various platforms such as social media, TV, newspapers, and through leaflets delivered to our homes. The timing couldn’t be more perfect - after the festive season has ended and we find ourselves longing for a new sense of joy amidst gloomy weather. Booking a holiday can give us a psychological boost, bringing excitement and anticipation for something positive in the near future. However, it’s essential to approach the process with caution and make informed decisions. When considering different travel options, take some time to research reputable travel companies that have a track record of providing excellent service and customer satisfaction. Look for reviews or testimonials from previous customers who have had positive experiences with them. Keep an eye out for any hidden costs or terms and conditions that may not be immediately apparent. Some companies might advertise attractive prices but fail to mention additional fees or restrictions until later in the booking process. Be thorough in reading through all the 26

This is to protect you if that travel company should go into administration. ATOL stand for Air Travel Operator’s License and is the name of the protection scheme run by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). We can let you know from our own experience that the application process is time-consuming and thorough. If the worst happens, under the ATOL scheme you will get a refund for your holiday or an alternative holiday/transport. This does not apply to non-UK companies though. For example, when Lowcosttravelgroup Ltd and

In fact, it’s not technically a car, but a quadricycle, and that means you can drive one if you’re 16 or older and hold an AM (50CC moped) license. If its proportions seem familiar, that’s because it’s closely related to the Citroën Ami and will share that car’s 8bhp electric motor and 5.5kWh battery. Top speed is 28mph, and a range of around 46 miles is expected.

Aston Martin Valhalla – available in Spring 2024, Aston Martin Valhalla will be the firm’s first plug-in hybrid model, but the primary reason for electrifying it is to boost performance rather than efficiency. HEALTH

STAY WELL THIS WINTER By Dr Julie Taylor Winter in particular can be a busy time for the NHS and knowing the right place to go can help you find the treatment you need faster. There is even more pressure this year with industrial action affecting hospitals and general practices, so it’s even more important to go to the right place for your need. Make sure you have a healthy 2024 by using the right NHS service when you have an urgent medical problem. The NHS in Kent and Medway is encouraging people to think about what health support they need and choose wisely by using NHS 111, online and by phone, and www.stopthinkchoose. co.uk. Stop Think Choose helps patients make an informed choice about where to go by listing the range of available options, including details of Kent and Medway pharmacies, urgent treatment centres (UTCs) and minor injury units (MIUs).

From 31 January 2024, some pharmacists will also be able to diagnose and treat 7 common conditions without you needing to visit your GP: shingles, impetigo, infected insect bites, acute sore throats, acute sinusitis, acute otitis media (ear infection), urine infections (in women aged 16-64). Urgent treatment centres There are urgent treatment centres (UTCs) across Kent and Medway that are open every day of the year. These centres are equipped to diagnose and deal with many of the most common ailments and minor injuries. UTCs offer a walk in service but it is advised to book an appointment to be seen via 111, who will redirect you to another service if the UTC is not the best place to meet your needs. You can download the WaitLess app (available on the App Store or Google Store) to find out the wait times at your local UTC.

WELLBEING

SUBTLE CHANGES IN A LOVED ONE COULD INDICATE AN UNDERLYING ISSUE By Christina Uppenkamp - Home Instead

Welcome to Senior Snippets: the monthly advisory column with older members of our community in mind, brought to you by Christina Uppenkamp of Home Instead Dartford. The Christmas season is a wonderful period for spending quality time with the family. It’s a time when we can be together with ageing relatives for longer than usual, often with them coming to stay for a few days. These visits sometimes spark concerns amongst family members who spot signs of decline in health, cognitive ability or general disposition; indicating that they may need some support to keep them safe and well. Mum is perhaps more forgetful than last time you visited and is repeating stories. Dad has lost weight and is off his food. A parent living on their own complains of being lonely and not getting out to see friends as often. These are some of the more obvious signs of decline, but what are the more subtle changes that family members should look out for?

It’s observations like these that trigger a search for support (after all prevention is better than cure), and why home care companies like Home Instead, see a significant spike in enquiries at this time of year. We are always on the lookout for caring and compassionate individuals to join our Care Professional team so that we can support more local individuals and families. We’d love to hear from you if you think you can help or if you would like to make a suggestion for a future topic. Please write to me at c .uppenkamp@dar tford.homeinstead.co.uk or by post to Home Instead, St Fidelis House, ST Fidelis Road, Erith, DA8 1AT. Alternatively, you can also call me on 01322923750.
