Yet for the Speedmaster, this was just another step in an extraordinary odyssey that has spanned 50 years, 118 space missions, 2 polar expeditions and 1 miraculous orbital re-entry watched by almost 60 million people. Whilst Omega’s humble vision in 1957 was to create a “new type of chronograph, designed for research, industry and sport” , it seems destiny chose a more extreme path for the Speedmaster. What began in the hands of master watchmakers half a century ago, continues today, on the wrists of those men and women who push the frontiers of science, on earth and in space. Omega invites you to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Speedmaster, to revisit those great moments in time that tested the limits of physical endurance and defined modern history.

In the spring of 1967 insurance salesman and explorer Ralph S. Plaisted led his expedition agonizingly close to achieving their goal of locating the Geographic North Pole. Just 370 nautical miles short of his objective, a fierce week long blizzard forced the expedition to be abandoned.

43 days, 2 hours Yet Plaisted proved his tenacity the following year as he departed for a second attempt from Nanchuk bay in Northern Greenland on March 7, 1968. This time his snowmobiles were equipped with powerful 16 horsepower engines and new traction modifications. Also perfectly suited to the extreme Arctic conditions, the unmodified Speedmaster strapped around his wrist.

Plaisted used his Speedmaster and a sextant to manually navigate the expedition through 1330 km of shifting ice flows and blinding snowstorms. Even when temperatures dropped below -50ºC, the Speedmaster functioned with unerring precision before Plaisted used the watch to configure exactly 90 degrees true north – The Geographic North Pole. True North

Overhead, the US Air Force confirmed the discovery with a radio message, “Gentlemen, from where you stand, everywhere is south.”

750,000 km, 102 hours, 45 minutes and 43 seconds after lift-off, the Apollo 11 Lunar Module touched down safely on the Sea of Tranquility after narrowly avoiding a hazardous boulder field during descent. 6 hours and 37 minutes later, astronaut Neil Armstrong stepped down onto the lunar surface and became the first man on the moon, relaying back to mission control perhaps the defining statement of the 20 th century. “That’s one small step for a man... one giant leap for mankind.”

Armstrong was joined shortly afterwards by his co-pilot wearing the Speedmaster that became the first and only watch on the moon. The astronauts then used the Speedmaster to time a 2.5 hour-long moonwalk gathering rock samples and performing a range of experiments. Before returning to the Apollo 11, the astronauts left behind a plaque inscribed with the following message to the universe.

“Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the mo

The motto of the Apollo 13, “Ex Luna, Scientia” – From the moon, knowledge. The Speedmaster’s third lunar mission launched successfully from the Kennedy Space Centre at the ominous time of 13:13 hrs. The first two days of the outward journey passed smoothly until 55:54:53 into the mission, on the 13th day of the month, when an electrical failure during a routine oxygen stir caused a crippling explosion. Moments later pilot Jack Swigert radioed down to mission control:

“Houston, we’ve had a problem here.” In truth Apollo 13 had several problems, all of them critical. Fleeing the damaged Command Module the crew evacuated to the tiny Aquarius Lunar Module to conserve power, fabricating a makeshift filter to absorb poisonous levels of CO2.

5 hours and 37 minutes after the explosion, the crew fired an engine burn to obtain the ‘free return trajectory’ required to slingshot the spacecraft around the moon. Finally mission control calculated it would require exactly 14 seconds of engine boost to angle the shuttle for re-entry into the earth’s atmosphere.

Despite condensation, freezing temperatures and zero gravity, the crew’s Speedmasters did not fail them. With a multi-million dollar computer system lying useless, the Speedmaster proved lucky for Apollo 13, delivering 14 exact seconds, 3 astronauts, and invaluable scientific research back to earth. 04

The Russian Soyuz shuttle departed from Kazakhstan on July 15, followed 7.5 hours later by the American Apollo spacecraft lifting off from Kennedy Space Center. The unprecedented objective of the ApolloSoyuz Test Project – to link together two shuttles in space via a specialized docking module.

On the wrists of the three astronauts and two cosmonauts involved in the test project was one watch, the Speedmaster. 12.09 EDT – on July 17, the Soyuz and Apollo bridged smoothly 229 km above Metz, France.

Commanders Stafford and Leonov emerged and used their synchronized Speedmasters to time a historic rendez-vous through the open hatch of Soyuz, toasting the occasion with a sip of Borscht from a tube labeled ‘Vodka’. The two shuttles disengaged 44 hours later after having successfully completed a range of technical experiments. The Speedmaster played a pivotal role in uniting east and west as one, synchronizing two Super Powers to provide the warmest moment of the Cold War.

Forty-two years after landing on the moon, the Speedmaster will take to the skies on board a plane with a wingspan wider than an Airbus A380, yet less than 1/100th of the weight. The Solar Impulse plane will embark on its maiden test flight before ultimately attempting to circumnavigate the earth using only the power of the sun. 44

The revolutionary solar skin stretched across the surface of the Solar Impulse’s wings will generate the renewable energy needed to propel the plane and its lone pilot, both day and night, at an altitude of 11,000m. Whilst the maiden flight scheduled for 2008 will attempt to fly for 36 hours non-stop, the final round the world voyage is expected to last several weeks. Although roughly one quarter the surface area of earth, Mars is a planet of incredible environmental extremes. The shield volcano Olympus Mons (above), standing at 24km, is the highest known mountain in the solar system. The Valles Marineris canyon (right) runs the length of Europe, reaching a depth of 10 km.

Even for the Speedmaster, a watch that has successfully endured the harsh conditions of the Moon’s surface, the environmental volatility of Mars presents a daunting challenge – temperatures range from -133ºC to 27ºC. The International Space Station is scheduled for 2012 and Omega is currently designing a Speedmaster to meet the demands of the next generation of astronauts.

A watch capable of accompanying man as he lifts off onboard a mission to Mars planned for 2030. With 11 NASA environmental tests, 90 space flights and 6 moon landings to its credit, the legendary moon watch is primed to continue its journey into the unknown reaches of the universe.

As advancements in technology have allowed man to continually redefine what is possible, the performance of the Speedmaster has kept pace with digitization and the development of space age materials. From pole to pole, through sound barriers, orbits and atmospheres, across the vast expanses of space, the Speedmaster has delivered split second precision under the most extreme conditions.

50 Years ahead Other than a few minimal refinements, the chronometer remains essentially unchanged since 1957. Evidently the Speedmaster was 50 years ahead of the pack at the time of design.

It still takes 14 months to manufacture the 195 separate parts prior to assembly and 80 hand held operations to create the main plate for a single Speedmaster. Painstaking craftsmanship certainly, yet there is no short cut to excellence.
