En 2005, plusieurs structures culturelles de Leeds invitent des artistes à mener une réflexion sur l’espace public. Charlie Jeffery et Dan Robinson s’y rencontrent et créent Mud Office, à l’occasion de l’atelier Negotiating us, here and now. Pour cette organisation fictive, à la fois bureaucratie et entreprise, ils rédigent un manifeste et des règles qui en définissent les objectifs et les fonctionnement. Ce faisant, ils tournent en dérision les pratiques sociales et organisationnelles des valeurs occidentales. Avec la boue, Mud Office s’approprie un matériau dévalué qui constitue pour lui un composant organique élémentaire, à partir duquel il invente une économie délirante. Mud Office met en place des contextes de réflexion, des événements et des outils de communication autour de ce principe.
In 2005, several cultural organizations in Leeds, northern England, invited artists to a brainstorming session about public places. Charlie Jeffery and Dan Robinson met during the workshop Negotiating us, here and now, and created Mud Office. For this fictitious organization, at once bureaucracy and business, they wrote a manifesto and drew up rules and regulations defining its goals and how it would operate. In so doing, they poked fun at various western cultural and economic values. Using mud, Mud Office appropriated a devalued material, an elementary organic constituent, based on which it invented an ambivalent economy. Mud Office established contexts for reflection, events and tools of communication based on this principle.
Mud Office Does Lunch est une nouvelle étape du Mud Office. Les artistes investissent le Couvent des Jacobins en créant un environnement à mi-chemin entre sculpture et installation. Composé de mobilier de récupération détruit et de matériaux neufs, ils réalisent un univers apparemment chaotique, désordonné, sorte de dédale d’éléments de bureau et de matériaux de construction en déconstruction. Cet amas de mobiliers inutilisables est le fruit d’un protocole de construction ou de démolition de 7 jours, qui fait l’objet d’une performance processus des deux artistes lors du montage de l’exposition, performance
Mud Office Does Lunch is a new phase for Mud Office. The artists occupy the Couvent des Jacobins by creating an environment halfway between sculpture and installation. Made of salvaged scrapped furniture and new materials, they produce a seemingly chaotic and disorderly world, a sort of maze of office furnishings and construction materials, all in a state of deconstruction. The installation was the outcome of a seven-day construction and demolition agreement, which became the focus of a performance process by the two artists while the exhibition was being assembled—a performance that could

Mud Office initie le spectateur à cette pratique via « LA RAMPE D’INTERPRÉTATION ». Sorte de rampe d’élévation façon MUD. Un panneau de bois sculpté appuyé contre l’arcade d’une porte, qui encadre l’installation en arrière-plan.
Mud Office initiates viewers in this praxis by way of the “INTERPRETIVE RAMP”. A sort of MUD-style elevated sign: a sculpted-notice propped against an arched doorway framing a viewpoint back into the work.
L’installation comprend en gros trois élément distincts : la coulée de boue, l’espace construit et une boule centrale. L’amas de mobiliers de bureau se construit, se détruit, se déconstruit par ARBITRATION / ARBITRAGE (de manière arbitraire) en formant une « coulée de boue » proliférante au centre de la salle d’exposition. Le duo britannique SPEAKING IN TONGUES travaille à un SPACE WASTAGE / GASPILLAGE D’ESPACE . Le trop-plein ici présenté peut-être renvoie à l’excès capitalistique ou le « bas matérialisme » de Georges
The installation consisneral and times of non-work, thus defining a sort of PROFESSIONAL LEISURE. The installation itself consists loosely of three parts: the mud flow, the constructed space and the central ball. The heap of office furniture is constructed, destroyed, and deconstructed ARBITRARILY as a “mud flow” which spreads out in the middle of the exhibition room. Bataille. L’espace est envahi donnant ainsi à voir l’accumulation de l’espace et de la matière liés à notre mode de production. Le dispositif agit en véritable REVEALMENT / RÉVÉLATION d’une sorte de materialIsme ou esthétique Mud. La sculpture prolifère dans une EXPONENTIAL GROWTH / CROISSANCE EXPONENTIELLE. Croissance sans fin d’une forme qui semble menacer de remplir l’intégralité des espaces. Toujours dans cette charge truffée d’humour envers notre société contemporaine, Charlie Jeffery et Dan Robinson nous proposent dans un second temps un espace aménagé en bureau/salon fait de polystyrène extrudé, matériau d’isolation. Le SLEIGHT OF HAND / L’HABILETÉ de la construction va de pair avec sa fragilité, une impression renforcée par le voisinage du tas déstructuré des rebuts de meubles. Le matériau se présente en plaques que l’on assemble rythmant le design des pièces : DIVISION + MULTIPLICATION. La FABRICATION de la boule centrale consiste en l’assemblage d’emballages et de mousses de protection diverses – de ceux que l’on jette à chaque acquisition d’un nouvel objet – qui forment une sphère de 2 mètres de diamètre suspendue au plafond au centre de l’installation.
The overflow here may refer to capitalist excess or Georges Bataille’s base materialism. The space is invaded, thus showing the accumulation of space and matter associated with our world of production. The arrangement is a REVEALMENT of some kind of Mud materialism or aesthetic. The sculpture proliferates in an EXPONENTIAL GROWTH pattern that seems to threaten to fill up all spaces.
L’ensemble de l’œuvre offre au spectateur un espace de déambulation pour contempler ce « trop plein » de nos vies matérielles, que l’on s’ingénie habituellement à rendre invisible.
The whole work offers onlookers a strolling area to look at this “overflow” from our material lives, something we usually do our utmost to make invisible.
Lors d’une performance, ouverte au public cette fois, Charlie Jeffery et Dan Robinson ont invité les visiteurs à partager des pizzas, des gâteaux, etc. sur fond de lectures absurdes et entrecoupées de musique et de danse disco. Entre dadaïsme ou burlesque du « so british ! », le choix n’est pas simple. Les artistes font ici la jonction entre leur travail, le travail en général et les temps de non-travail, définissant ainsi une sorte de PROFESSIONAL LEISURE / LOISIR PROFESSIONNEL.
During one particular performance, open to the public this time, Charlie Jeffery and Dan Robinson invited visitors to share pizzas, cakes and the like, against a backdrop of absurd readings interspersed with disco music and dancing. Somewhere between Dadaism and a burlesque rendering of things oh-soBritish, the choice was not straightforward. Here the artists made a link between their work, work in general and times of non-work, thus defining a sort of PROFESSIONAL LEISURE.
Mud Office ébranle au fonctionnement de « l’économie de croissance », au BUSINESS DRIFT / DÉRIVE du BUSINESS, en examiner ses limites, ses abus, dans un monde hyperproductif, dirigé par l’impératif de rentabilité et du « toujours plus neuf » – nourri d’HIGH TECH SOLUTIONS / SOLUTIONS DE TECHNOLOGIE DE POINTE. Dès lors, résonne l’ironie du titre qui rassemble toutes les composantes de l’œuvre – production, performance et pièces exposées :
Mud Office unsettles the “economy of growth”, and BUSINESS DRIFT , by investigating its limits and abuses, in a hyperproductive world, steered by the dictates of profitability and “ever newer things”—nurtured by HIGH TECH SOLUTIONS. Henceforth the irony of the title reverberates, encompassing all the elements of the work--production, performance and pieces on view:

With a sardonic glance at contemporary society, Charlie Jeffery and Dan Robinson offer us, in the next area, a space furnished as an office/living room made of extruded polystyrene, an insulating material. The SLEIGHT OF HAND of the construction goes hand in hand with its fragility, an impression strengthened by the proximity of the destructured pile of furniture rejects. The material is presented in panels that are assembled to punctuate the design of the pieces: DIVISION + MULTIPLICATION. Suspended from the ceiling in the middle of the installation: The FABRICATION of the central ball consists of the assemblage of various packaging and protective foam materials—the sort thrown away with each new object—which form a sphere 2 m in diameter.
