Building a Diverse Community To Embrace Puerto Rican Culture Barrio E’ is a unique project in the state of Colorado aiming to educate, expose, promote and preserve Puerto Rican music, dance and art in Boulder County and cities beyond. As a consequence of a societal need of diversifying arts, bringing awareness of different cultures, and providing a space for integration in our society, Barrio E’ community project was born September 23, 2013. We became fiscally sponsored by the Boulder County Arts Alliance (BCAA) on February 6, 2013. Barrio E’ empowers individuals through knowledge of history, musical roots, traditional music and dance. The project sparked individuals to look at their Cultural Identity, create art, develop new projects, and continue their musical development. It also helped individuals to eliminate barriers between cultures, language, and brought the opportunity to reconnect with their heritage. To others, Barrio E’ opened a door to better understand the connection we all have through history and the music trajectory throughout the world, enlightening how interlacing our human path in the world really is. Barrio E’s goal is to create a diverse community while encouraging creativity and strengthening social cohesion through inclusiveness and integration of individuals who participate in the project. Barrio E’ is available to the wide community, people across ages, ethnicities, genders, and professional as well as personal backgrounds. We accomplished Barrio E’s mission this year throughout Boulder County and its neighboring counties by: • Providing time and expertise in classes, workshops, seminars and after school programs. • Facilitating exposure with exhibitions, educational and interactive performances, collaborations with local and external artists brought to Colorado by Barrio E’ and the City of Boulder, and organizing /sponsoring free social events open to the community and the general public. • Creating an Ensemble, the formal performance group, who exposes and provides traditional Puerto Rican live Music and Dance for public and private events including social, cultural, and educational events, festivals, business, organizations and institution events, weddings, birthdays, private parties, exhibitions at institutions, open spaces, and schools. The performance ensemble provides an enriching artistic and cultural presentation. • Acting as an advocate for Puerto Rican arts and culture in Colorado. This report describes how we achieved our mission in 2013 through programs, services and events with the dedication of volunteers, community supporters, arts advocates and funders. Thanks to all people involved for giving us the opportunity to be part of their lives. It has been a great journey working with you and our community. Barrio E’ Programs 2013 Classes Percussion, Dance, History and Song Classes were taught at dance studios, community centers and institutions. We implemented classes across ages integrated, also individualized grouped as kids, teens, adults and seniors, plus had family classes were families were encouraged to spend quality time while learning about other culture. Barrio E’ available instruments and attires are used by individuals from the community. Individuals who took our classes were exposed in the community at different venues in Boulder, Fort Collins and Denver, and expositions on the Pearl Street Mall in Boulder and the 16th Street Mall in Denver. Workshops Intensive percussion and dance workshops were developed in Boulder and Denver. These are short instances were individual were instructed from 2 to 4 hrs of instruction on a musical genre, a specific Rhythm and Dance Step. We also discussed the origin of the musical genre we exposed. Among the venues we utilized were Naropa University, University of Colorado-Boulder, CU Natural Arts Museum, Pearl Street Mall, El Centro Amistad, Kakes Studios, Boulder Farmer’s Market surroundings/park, Sherman Street Event Center, Mercury Café, and McNichols Building at the Denver Civic Center. Barrio E’ available instruments and attires are used by individuals from the community.

After School Programs Barrio E’ developed educational after-school programs for Creekside Elementary School and New Horizons Cooperative Pre-School. We discussed and instructed history, musical genres Bomba and Plena, instruments, dance, songs and percussion.

Seminars and Exhibitions at Institutions and Venues Barrio E’ offered seminars and exhibitions at Educational Institutions including University of Colorado Boulder in the Dennis Small Center, at the Department of Theater and Dance, and Sanchez Elementary School. We also provided exhibitions at Avalon Ballroom, Millennium Hotel, Shine Restaurant, Trattoria Restaurant, La Rumba, Crimson & Gold Cavern, Pearl Street Mall and 16th Street Mall.

Ensemble People who have taken classes and workshops with Barrio E’ have the opportunity to continue learning at a deeper level and become part of the Barrio E‘nsemble. Barrio E’nsemble is the professional group that represents Puerto Rican music and dance in public and private events in Colorado. Ensemble rehearsals happen weekly. We have performed in festivals (A Taste of Puerto Rico, Cinco de Mayo, CU African Festival, CU-International Festival), private events and weddings (Castle Rock, Denver, Fort Collins, Boulder, Longmont). Barrio E’ instruments and attires are used by ensemble members.

Bomba! Feel Puerto Rico This is an event hosted by Barrio E’ and sponsored in part by the City of Boulder celebrating Immigrant Heritage Week and the Hispanic Heritage Month. An educational and interactional performance was provided free and open to the general public for all ages where participation was encouraged. We brought Master Bombero Alex LaSalle from New York to collaborate with Barrio E’.

Professional Development During the Summer 2013 we offered professional development workshops to Ensemble members to train them on how to become effective instructors for the musical genres we were teaching them. The purpose is to develop a program where individuals who have taken our classes can become Barrio E’ instructors, giving the opportunity to have their own classes under Barrio E’s supervision. The classes were offered to 4 Ensemble members who have been taking our classes, workshops and were intensively trained through the ensemble rehearsals, performances and exhibitions. These courses were free (at no cost) to any of the members. Barrio E’ ran with expenses of renting space, resources and materials. Participants: Luisa Marie Rodríguez (one class), Kebrina Josefina de Jesús, Ben Christensen and J.R. Souders (the last 3 completed the beginners professional development course).

Pa’l Batey Social Event This is a monthly Social Event produced to reinforce integration, build a community to embrace Puerto Rican culture, and practice the musical genres and dance. This ongoing event is free and open to the general public and provides an excellent opportunity to connect with your neighbors in the community. Families are encouraged to attend.
Membership Program This Annual Membership Program is available to individuals and families. The first memberships were provided free to the individuals who took our classes. The membership cost is $10.00 per individual or family. Members get discounted prices at classes and workshops provided by Barrio E’, discounts at Barrio E’vents, discounted prices for Barrio E’s Gear and receive information about Barrio E’, Puerto Rico, music, dances, lyrics, and more.

Bring External Artists and Spark Collaboration with local Artists Barrio E' believes in collaboration with local and external artists. We would like to offer Colorado the opportunity to meet key people from our culture, music, dance and art. Barrio E ' establishes relationships inside and outside of Colorado with the purpose of offering our communities the experience of having contact and involvement with masters and experts in these areas. These collaborations vitalize, develop and maintain Barrio E’s mission and values alive, giving path to connections with an even larger community to which we belong. This year we had the honor of bringing Master Bombero Alex LaSalle. Mr. LaSalle has been an exponent of the musical genres of Bomba and Plena, founder and director of Alma Moyo and integral member of Pleneros de la 21 from New York. LaSalle offered workshops and classes to the community and our Ensemble during his visit. He was the main guest speaker for "Rooted, culture starts at the roots" at the Dennis Small Cultural Center celebrating Hispanic Heritage at University of Colorado-Boulder. He also rehearsed and performed with Barrio E'nsemble in Boulder and Denver, Colorado.

Bring Barrio E’nsemble members to Puerto Rico To motivate immersion and to truly raise awareness of our culture to our Ensemble members, we provide them the opportunity to visit Puerto Rico, helping them in their accommodations. These travel visits are ideal for members to go through a first-hand experience of the culture we are exposing within Barrio E ' in Colorado. In addition to visiting the island and meet known artists and exponents of Puerto Rican art and traditional music, they can establish a more personal relationship with key people in our culture. Puerto Rican cities and important places that have marked our history are visited, and further history of our people and country is discussed. Often, visitors have the opportunity to play instruments, dance, spend time with other artists and participate in key events in our society during their visit. Ben Christensen, our 2013 Primo percussionist in the Barrio E’nsemble, was our first visitor in September 2013. We offered him accommodations at our home in Puerto Rico and he was transported to different places and events where he met with artists. Ben had the amazing opportunity to take a Primo class with Master Bomba percussionist Mr. Rafael Maya. He also had the opportunity to participate in the largest annual Bomba Meeting event in Puerto Rico called “Encuentro de Tambores”. At this event all Bomberos from the island come together to meet in the town of Juncos where every city presents songs, music and dances of Bomba. Barrio E' participated alongside the city of Santurce under the direction of Marién Torres, Tambuyé Project Director, and Restauración Cultural directors Mr. Pablo Luis Rivera, Rafael Maya and Felipe Febres. During his visit he also met other artists and members of other groups such as Raúl Ayala from Loíza, Hermanos Emmanuelli from Santurce, Iván Dávila from Carolina, Tamara Roberts and Melissa Reyes from Bomberas de la Bahía from San Francisco, California, Jamie Pérez from Mayagüez, Kelly Archbold from Santa Ana, California, Gilberto Saavedra from Washington, D.C. and more.

Buy/Bring instruments from Puerto Rican Artisans to Colorado Looking for Coloradoans to go through the real experience of Puerto Rican music, we implemented a program to buy Puerto Rican instruments from artisans who create the original instruments. It also supports artisans labor and their knowledge in the subject, valuing their art and expertise in the making of the instrument. We have chosen local businesses to work on Barrio E’ attires and T’shirts. Thanks to our official seamstress, María Alejandre, from Longmont, Colorado, who made our wonderful Ensemble attires. We also appreciate the Apollo, Inc. support that prints out our Logo T-shirts in Boulder using shirts from Denver.

Building a Diverse Community To Embrace Puerto Rican Culture Research and Advocacy Barrio E’ understands the responsibility of teaching and representing a culture. Therefore the director, assigned administrators and interested individuals do continuous research on the history, music and social background of the musical genres Barrio E’ presents in our communities in Colorado. Research includes finding books, documents and information at libraries, institutions and people. We also perform interviews of Master Individuals or Educational Organizations about history, musical genres, dance, songs, their experiences and knowledge about specific subjects. Puerto Rican history and knowledge about traditional musical genres are hidden, and people who hold this knowledge are very protective of this treasure. Barrio E’ seeks to establish connections, learn and preserve knowledge for future generations, at the same time that promotes respect to the culture and responsibility with the information we gather. Barrio E’ advocates for individuals, groups and organizations whose mission is to preserve and continue culture, advocacy for musical genres, artisans, to preserve and expose history, and for finding/using spaces in the community to have this information/art available and exposed in the community. Some of the pictures are interviews performed in 2013 to different advocates and artists of the Bomba Musical Genre Community. Our interviews or source of information included: Jorge Emmanuelli, Raú Ayala, Papo Alers, Rafael Maya, Felipe Febres, Jamie Perez, Javier Castro, Christian Galarza, Iván Dávila, and Alex LaSalle among others.

As a result, we have the support of the world and Puerto Rican musical society, but also the responsibility to maintain a positive community with individuals and groups who collaborate and understand the deep connection with each other while protecting the treasure of culture.

Impact We have had 211 attendees in Barrio E’ classes and 187 attendees at workshops in total between Boulder and Denver. We have reached out to 715 individuals in exhibitions (at Schools and streets) and approximately 8,200 individuals in performances in Colorado. Other known direct impacts to individual who have been involved in Barrio E’:
Got in contact with their heritage and culture – parent or parents from PR but did not have contact with their culture before coming to Barrio E’. Got in contact with Spanish Language – we exposed people to learn and sing in Spanish. Helped them with definitions, pronunciations and intonations. Gave a space for singers who would like to sing in Spanish. There are no many places where people can incorporate both the language and the singing. Several percussionists and percussion students got in touch with Afro-Caribbean music, which is not easily accessible at institutions in Boulder, Denver and in Colorado in general. We sparked interest in music and percussion to some individuals who now are learning more about the subject. We encouraged and empowered people to sing and find their voice. They built up confidence in their developed skill and now have their own projects as singers. Encouraged and morally supported people to develop their own Latino musical group. Sparked interest in students to develop projects based on their Cultural Identity and Bomba Musical Genre at Graduate Level. Supported the students by providing contacts of Master Bomberos, guidance and information, accessibility to the Bomba community, and instruments. Barrio E’ trained Ensemble members who later went onto work in their own productions. Sparked interest of people moving to other states to look for musical groups or projects related to what they learned. Sparked interest of people moving overseas to bring artists to their new place (e.g in Oman) to expose Afro-Caribbean music. Exposed musicians to history and music they did not know about before coming to Barrio E’. Sparked interest in Latinos to look for their own culture and roots. Sparked interest of other cultures to find information about other cultures and their similarities. Gave opportunity to women who could not be in the same room with men due to their culture, to get exposed to playing drums for the first time. Brought a space for seniors to be involved, learn at their own pace and feel energized with music, movement and dance. Involved kids in drumming and dancing, while helping their self-esteem, confidence, and integration. Parents felt they found a space where they could learn with their kids about other cultures while having fun and spending quality time together. People felt they found a de-labeled community where they felt welcome and encouraged to be themselves.

Marketing Strategies We advertised events through posters, magazines, websites, social media, emails, radio, TV, schools and other organizations. In particular Barrio E' advertised free events on TV at the ABC/Denver Telemundo Chanel 9 News, Latin Life Denver Radio at KZKO, KGNU Radio Station, Salsa Chat Online Radio Program, Party934 Radio at KUVO and Latin Life Denver Magazine which featured Barrio E' and Barrio E'nsemble in a 2-page spread article seen by over one million viewers.

How has participating in BCAA’s Fiscal Sponsorship program benefited you, your organization or the community? BCAA has provided Barrio E' with training seminars that have led to grant opportunities. The grant writing experience was a great way to begin looking at the format of the grant processes and helped Barrio E' present its project ideas in a format which would increase credibility. This essential organizational piece was a very important stepping-stone into Barrio E's formation and structure. The Fiscal sponsorship helped us also by mere presence in our organization to be taken seriously by other community organizations and funding agencies. It also opened doors for the project to be presented in areas where otherwise there would be no opportunity. The grant we received thanks to BCAA and its fiscal sponsorship of us helped the Barrio E' project to bring to the community projects that were interactive, educational, cultural in nature and very possibly ongoing throughout the year. Our community impact can be seen in the numbers provided, however, our reach has been innumerable by many measures since the project, to this day, is recognized by many people throughout Colorado whom had not been to any of our events, rather, many people have found out about the project by either word of mouth or by the numerous advertising campaigns we endeavored through online, television and printed media. Furthermore, the persons who have benefited from the project, thanks to opportunities brought about by the ever accessible BCAA staff, its grants, its fiscal sponsorship and advertising, have been as diverse as we'd like them to be. Persons involved have include toddlers to senior citizens, persons of varied sexual, gender, and belief preferences, various nationalities expanding from locals to foreign born persons from Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, the Caribbean, South and Central America. The experience we provide has helped individuals connect back to their roots, sparked further societal, musical and cultural education, improved self-esteem and created a family atmosphere on and off activities. Attitudes and perspectives have changed from what benefits me to what benefits my community and fellow human beings. Barrio E' strongly believes in the purpose of BCAA through personal experience and from the evidence throughout the years at the help brought from them to local artists and projects that help the community. It is the hope of the project that BCAA continues its important goal and help future local artists and projects with unique and great ideas to cultivate a culture of community and art.
