Trying to work in the cave painters manner 1- Materials used Question :which materials did Prehistoric Men use for drawing? Prepare clay, powder paint, charcoal pencils, stencils, inking pads and ask Children to mix paints ; black, red, ocher, white. Such pigments were available in nature : you could obtain black by burning wood or bones, Red was obtained from iron oxide (hematite), caused by oxidization of iron (rust). Clay would provide ocher and white. These materials were grinded in a stone mortar to make powder. Powder was then mixed with water, fats, marrow or saliva which are binding agents, to change the colors pigments were heated. 2 -Tools Men would blow the pigments with a hollow bone or directly and spray them with fingers ,They would use moss and leaves as pads. And make paint brushes out of horsehair or feathers with a wooden stick, Hands were used as stencils 3- Paintings Question: what did Prehistoric Men paint, where and why? At the Lascaux cave, holes in the bottom show that scaffoldings have been used to reach the ceiling. Unevenesses of the walls have been used to make raised pictures of animals, Motivations of the paintings are unknown, Animals are represented without any surroundings, May be they liked to represent the animals they chased, but if it is true, why did they not paint reindeers whereas they hunted many of them, Few hunters are represented, Animals may have represented a family or a clan , Animals paintings are rather accurate, Artists also made engravings and sculptures, In a cave of the Vienne pebbles have been found with hundreds of humans engraved in them, Statues representing women have also been found ; these Venus_have big buttocks and breasts and may be represent a form of worship to the goddess Mother. Prehistoric Paintings in Gilf Kebir:

THE CAVE OF THE SWIMMERS France Gilf Kebir is the most arid and desolate places on Earth, but thousands of years ago, the site had water and was inhabited by humans and animals. In the 1930s, Hungarian explorer László Almásy discovered prehistoric paintings in the Cave of the Swimmers, which gave a view into the life of a long forgotten civilisation. The video takes us inside the Foggini-Mestekawi cave, discovered in January 2003, and gives us an insight into its ancient, mysterious past. ●
