In Colonial days wagons stopped in Buchanan to rest and gather provisions. Today travelers stop for gas, food,

shopping and the chance to stretch their legs. In the early 1800’s Buchanan was the terminus of the James River and Kanawha Canal as a result the Town quickly became the center of commerce for the surrounding area. During the Civil War Buchanan served as a Confederate supply depot for the shipment of agricultural produce and pig iron to Richmond via the James River and Kanawha Canal. Today visitors flock to this waterfront location to picnic, stroll, fish along the banks of the James River, or to canoe, kayak or tube the Upper James River Water Trail. History lovers can learn about Buchanan’s role during the Civil War as they explore four VA Civil War Trail Markers known as the Hunter’s Raid Trail. In the late 1800’s, Buchanan became a stopping point for travelers on the newly completed Shenandoah Valley Railroad (Norfolk Southern) and the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad (CSX). Tourist boarded carriages at the depots traveling to the Town’s many hotels and businesses. With the 1900’s advent of the auto downtown’s businesses adapted once more to serve a wider distribution of customers. Travelers stopped to shop, dine and take in a “picture show” at the Theatre. Since the arrival of the I-81, Buchanan has become a popular stopping point for tourists traveling along I-81. After the Civil War, commerce and manufacturing declined in Buchanan and Pattonsburg as canal traffic was eclipsed by rail traffic from Salem to Lynchburg.

In 1881 Buchanan incorporated Pattonsburg into its Town limits and industrial and commercial growth occurred followed completion of the Norfolk and Western and the Chesapeake and Ohio lines through town. New industry such as the Continental Can Company and the Virginia Can Company increased jobs and population.

By 1920 railroad employees far outnumbered self-employed artisans and by World War I industrial manufacturing had replaced pre-Civil War patterns of production by skilled craftsmen. Industrial employment in Buchanan increased between 1920 and 1940 with limestone and bone product operations, many commuted to town by automobile on newly improved hard surface roads. 12

Industrial employment continued to provide work for Buchanan residents during and after World War II with fixtures including Hafleigh and Co. Groendyke Manufacturing Co, and quarry production.

By the 1970’s Buchanan was suffering the same decline of cities and towns across the country. In 1995 Buchanan established a grassroots Downtown Revitalization Program based on the principles of the Virginia Main Street Program. Buchanan is successfully using the principles of economic development within the context of historic preservation resulting in a renewed, vibrant downtown. Over the past twenty years more than 6.7 million dollars of private sector investment has fueled Buchanan’s resurgence. New businesses are creating new jobs while generating increased tax revenues which help rebuild the community’s infrastructure and civic pride. The community’s efforts are not going unnoticed as the community has

received local and international awards including the Valley Conservation Council’s “Best Downtown Initiative Award,” the Roanoke Valley Preservation Foundation “Preservation Award,” the Roanoke Valley Preservation Foundation “Good Neighbor Award,” numerous Botetourt’s Best Awards from the Roanoke Times including “Best Place to Take Relatives from Out of Town” and “Best Community Event,” as well as recognition by VA Tourism as “One of the Top Ten Underrated Cities in Virginia to Check Out,” as well as Fodors International “One of the Top Ten Antiquing Town in the US” and Virginia Blue Ridge “One of the Best Fall Color Spots in the Blue Ridge Mountains.” Buchanan’s successful revitalization activities are spilling over into our surrounding residential neighborhoods attracting new families to our community who are not only restoring many of the Town’s historic homes but becoming the next generation of active members of the community.

Wilson Warehouse – Community House

uchanan’s best known Civil War Era structure is the Wilson Warehouse/Community House located at 421 Lowe Street. Completed in 1839 for John S. Wilson as a combined store, warehouse and private residence, the building

remained in the family for almost a century. In 1938 the structure was purchased by Oscar C. Huffman who donated to building to the Buchanan Town Improvement Society to be preserved as an historic landmark available to the public for gatherings such as weddings, anniversary parties, concerts and public meetings. The Wilson Company was the chief shipper and receiver of goods during “Canal Days” when Buchanan acted as the western terminus of the James River & Kanawha Canal.

In the store room, above the 1839 piano forte, is a copy of Edward Beyer’s oil painting of the Town. The original painting was owned by the Wilson family and is owned by the Town Improvement Society today. After the flood of 1985, the painting was restored and moved to the Bank of Botetourt for display. The portrait in the dining room shows the Wilson’s Children Charles

The Zimmerman house featured in Edward Beyer’s 1855 painting of the Town and still stands today on First Street. Buchanan also provided troops for the Confederate war effort, most notably for the Botetourt Artillery, a unit which distinguished itself in the defense of Vicksburg. John W. Johnston headed the Botetourt Artillery in January 1863. Buchanan banker William Douthat’s sons Henry and William served as Second Lieutenants in the Botetourt Artillery. William Douthat Died in the defense of Vicksburg in May 1863 and was succeeded by Frances Obenchain, son of merchant Thomas Obenchain. Enlisted men from Buchanan in the Botetourt Artillery included Oliver Haney, son of Hotel Botetourt keeper Jacob Haney; Ferdinand Woltz, son of tailor William Woltz; and J. thZimmerman, son of saddler John Zimmerman. Federal General David Hunter marched through Buchanan on June 13, 1864 on his ill-fated raid in Lynchburg.

The following day Confederate General J.D. Imboden reported that Hunter had driven Confederate troops under McCausland’s command out of Buchanan. No other official military accounts of the engagement in Buchanan have been found, however, period letters tell how McCausland burned the covered bridge over the James River before leaving igniting a fire which destroyed close to thirty buildings. Personal letters of the era also tell of the devastation to Buchanan caused by the war including the burning of Col. John Anderson’s home known as Mount Joy, the three day Federal occupation of Oak Hill, the Anchorage, the Presbyterian Manse as well as other private homes and offices throughout Town. The battle flag of the Botetourt Artillery was said to have been made from the wedding dress of Cassandra Anderson, owner of Mount Joy. Buchanan Swinging Bridge

n 1999 the Buchanan Swinging Bridge was recognized as a a contributing structure to the Town of Buchanan National Register Historic District. The Buchanan Swinging Bridge is 366 feet long, 57.5 feet tall and the only one of its type to cross the James River. Portions of the bridge date back to 1851 and have witnesses Hunter’s Civil War Raid, the rerouting of U.S. Route 11, and numerous floods. The original stone piers rising from the James River were constructed in 1851 for the Buchanan Turnpike Company’s Wood Covered Toll Bridge. Toll for every person to pass through this wood covered bridge was five cents with an additional five cents for each horse, mule or oxen and five cents for each wagon. On June 13, 1864 the covered bridge was burned by Confederate General McCausland in an effort to prevent Federal troops from crossing the James River on their way to Lynchburg. The bridge was rebuilt following the war but washed away in a flood of 1877. At this time, the R&A Railroad Company rebuilt a toll free covered bridge. In 1897 this wood covered bridge was replaced with a steel bridge that remained in use until 1938. In July of 1937 construction of the current concrete James River Bridge was started with an agreement with the Town under Mayor C. W. Blount to maintain pedestrian access to Pattonsburg 22

via the swinging bridge. On July 4, 1938, the bridge was dedicated following a presentation by Governor E. Lee Trinkle. Since 1851, portions of the Buchanan Swinging Bridge have played a critical role in the Town of Buchanan’s history while providing a scenic crossing of the James River.

The Buchanan Theatre

hat’s old is new again. With a new, state of the art digital projection system, the Buchanan Theatre is welcoming hundreds of visitors each week. Patrons are enjoying the latest movies, live concerts as well as home grown talent featured during the Annual Elementary School Programs and 4H Talent Shows. Elmer Shank opened his Main Street theater in 1914 under the name of the Star Theater, in 1930, he changed the name to the Buchanan Theatre. The Buchanan Theatre remained in continuous operation from its opening until November 5, 1985 when owner Wayne Thompson had to close the Theatre due to the flooding of the James River. The Theatre remained closed for almost twenty years. In 1999 Dale and Gloria Carter purchased the Buchanan Theatre and began renovations. In 1999, the Buchanan Theatre was designated as a contributing structure to the Town’s National Register Historic District. By fall of 2001 work was complete and a 501 c 3 nonprofit organization known as Standing Room Only was formed to operate the Theatre. On November 1, 2001 the Buchanan Theatre reopened its doors to a packed house premiering The Majestic. Today, the Buchanan Theatre looks almost as it did sixty years ago. The 1950’s renovations are a favorite feature of today’s Theatre goers. The once icon of modernity neon sign is now a vintage artifact. Each Thursday,

Friday, Saturday and Sunday patrons are greeted by the familiar hum of the red and green neon. The scent of buttered popcorn drifts through the air as patrons purchase tickets from the ticket booth just as they have since the early 1900’s. Before the days of multiplexes, theater goers purchased tickets to an experience, not just a movie. Today, the Buchanan Theatre is selling that old time experience. Customers are greeted as they enter the doors of this historic theatre and welcomed to enjoy the show. Inside, the streamline curves of the concession stand, the ornamental popcorn machine and beautiful pressed metal ceilings transport guests to the early days when theater goers dreamed of other lands. Since reopening, the Buchanan Theatre has been honored by City Magazine with their “Best of the City” Award and recognized as “Best Place to See a Film 2004.” Other awards include the Theatre being one of the venues for the Roanoke Valley Film Festival 2005 & 2006, venue for the Blue Ridge Film & Music Festival in 2012 and winner of the 2008 “Heart of the City Award” given by the Valley Conservation Council and in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 & 2015 voted by readers of the Roanoke Times Botetourt View as Best Place to Hear Local Music, and, Best Place For A First Date. Today Standing Room Only owns and operates the Buchanan Theatre. In 2012 the Theatre upgraded the projection system by installing a new, state-of-the-art digital projector. Standing Room Only is currently working on grant applications to continue additional restoration activities of the Buchanan Theatre building hoping to expand preserve the building for future generations while expanding their base of community support and programing. Botetourt Physical Therapy (BPT) is committed to providing the Roanoke Valley with the highest quality comprehensive rehabilitation services possible. Eric has been with Botetourt Physical Therapy since August 2011. Eric earned a BS degree in Athletic Training in 2007 from West Virginia University and a Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Shenandoah University. Prior to physical therapy school, Eric worked as a clinical athletic trainer at Greenbrier Valley Physical Therapy in Lewisburg, WV. Eric has a great deal of experience with orthopedic injuries and sports medicine, as well as performing biomechanical analysis and treating neurological conditions. Eric is dedicated to the care and recovery of each patient, educating them about the benefits of physical therapy.

Howard has been a member of our team since May 2012. He is a graduate of Jefferson College of Health Sciences Physical Therapy Assistant Program. Howard served in the US Army for 20 years and spent one year assigned as an infantry platoon sergeant in Afghanistan. Howard’s clinical experience is predominantly in musculoskeletal rehabilitation and neurological conditions. Howard instructs patients in an exercise program tailored specifically to their injury or condition. Our goal is to return patients to their prior level of activity, whether it be performing tasks at home, recreation or competitive sports.

Amy has been a part of Botetourt Physical Therapy since it’s beginning in 2008. Amy specializes in customer service and will provide each patient with specific benefit information regarding their insurance coverage of physical therapy in our clinic. She is happy to answer any insurance or billing questions you may have as well as work to find an appointment that works with your schedule.

Stop in Buchanan While Traveling the Upper James River Water Trail

“blueway” or “water trail” is a small boat or paddling route along a waterway that combines recreation and environmental awareness while linking communities and land-based attractions such as historic sites and parks. The Upper James River Water Trail was created by Botetourt County to encourage residents and visitors to experience the beauty and history of one of the county’s greatest natural treasures. The mighty James River finds its source at the confluence of the Jackson and Cowpasture rivers in Botetourt County. These headwaters commonly known as the Upper James River have played an important role in the economies of the communities located along the river. Historically, the river was used as a transportation system with a series of locks and canals used to carry goods downstream towards Lynchburg. Today, the river is a recreational corridor used for fishing, canoeing, tubing, kayaking and water viewing along its 45-mile stretch in Botetourt. The major assets of the Upper James River include its scenery, world-class bass fishing, friendly small town atmosphere and its rich history and diverse character. The trips can be as short as a couple of hours or as long as you wish to make them, depending on how many stops you make for wildlife-watching, fishing and exploring. Additional time should be added if the group is fishing, many serious fishermen average only 1 mph. Make note of distances when planning your trip and make sure you launch early enough in the day to make it to your take out well before it gets dark. What is a good water level for paddling the Upper James River Water Trail? The Upper James River Water Trail is navigable by canoe or kayak when the river level on the Buchanan river gauge is above 2.0 feet which is pretty much year round. At 2.0 feet there are some areas that get pretty scrappy. The local outfitters consider 2.3 to 4.0 feet ideal river levels for paddling on the Upper James River Water Trail. Above 6.0 feet on the river gauge the local outfitters stop running due to safety concerns of high water with strong currents. Be advised river levels can change pretty rapidly depending on recent rain fall amounts upstream. Paddlers should be mindful of rain events up stream that may impact river levels during their outings.

They sell camping, hunting, and fishing supplies including live bait, tackle, and fishing licenses. How do we plan a shuttle? Free parking is available at all public water trail access points. If traveling with multiple cars, you should meet at the downstream take-out and park a vehicle that will be waiting for you at the end of your trip, then drive to put in and launch paddling back to the car left at your take out location. If you shuttle using a vehicle at both the put-in and take-out

points, make sure you bring your keys for the take-out vehicle. A great paddling trip can be spoiled when you realize that your car keys were left at the put-in.

If traveling in one vehicle, choose a river section where you can launch and paddle upstream, and turn around when you’re ready to paddle back downstream to your vehicle. Or contact one of our local outfitters who offers a fee based river shuttle service. How deep is the river? The river level of the Upper James River Water Trail varies from a few inches to well over 15 feet in some places. However the average depth of the James is waist deep or less for an average adult. When the river clarity is clear you will be able to see the river bottom in all but the deepest pools along the way. Since the river depth is constantly changing all paddlers should wear their life jackets while on the water. Do I need to be able to swim to go on the river trail? Is it safe for very young children? Even the easiest sections of the Upper James River Water Trail contain rapids that can tip over unsuspecting paddlers. The river is a wild and natural environment and not set up like an engineered water park ride at an amusement park. Upon flipping over, each person must be able to safely make a self recovery to be able to get to the river bank on their own. Accordingly, the river is no place for small children and non swimmers for safety reasons.

Where can I camp on the River? The river banks down the entire Upper James River Trail are privately owned. That being said, here are several options. Camping on national forest land just past the end of the water trail. About 12 miles below Buchanan and about 1 mile below Alpine on river right starts a 3 mile section of National Forest Land available for free primitive camping. (A popular 2 day trip is Buchanan to Glasgow, 21 river miles class I-II, with national Forest camping in the middle.) The Breeden Bottom Campground has huge river front sites available and is located on the River near Arcadia for a fee. Other Campgrounds in the County are North Creek (a National Forest Campground) and Middle Creek Campground, (a Commercial Campground) both of which are located very close to the James River just up from Arcadia.
