LCA's Guide to Preschool

Page 1

WELCOME It is a pleasure to welcome you to Lexington Christian Academy! As a school, we value the partnership we have with our families and are committed to our mission “to equip and nurture students to fulfill God’s calling on their lives through Christ-centered education.” Our preschool program is not a standalone learning center, but rather an integral part of the LCA school system, which is dedicated to educating leaders, transforming lives, and glorifying God. Our preschool program provides a variety of learning opportunities that allow students to be challenged academically, develop socially and spiritually, and begin to explore their God-given talents and gifts, all centered through a Biblical Worldview Curriculum. In addition to their homeroom class, our preschool program offers children an array of enrichment programs including art, chapel, library, music, physical education, Spanish, and STEAM. We have exceptional teachers who are qualified, talented and reflect Jesus as they teach and love your child. In addition to the educational experiences that your child will receive, your family will embark on a journey building life-long relationships within the LCA family.

Our preschool is state-approved, and with national accreditation through Cognia (formerly known as AdvancedEd,) it gives families the confidence that LCA is providing a high level of care and education for our students. We invite you to learn more about our program. Come tour our campus and discover more about a school where students develop a love for learning and a love for Jesus.

CHRIST-CENTERED EDUCATION Each child is a gift from God and created in His image. Therefore, quality preschool programs ought to provide exceptional learning experiences that will equip and develop each child into their full potential in Christ. Our instruction, preschool through graduation, integrates truths of scripture. Daily, our students receive a Bible lesson and weekly, they attend a chapel program specially designed for three to five year-olds. Above all, our programs foster a deep love for Jesus. We want to help our students “love Jesus and love learning.” Studies have shown the most faith-shaping years are between the ages of two and six. It is during these early years when children are forming their ideas about God and what He is like. Christ-centered early education programs intentionally focus on forming a strong foundation that students can build their faith.

PURPOSEFUL LEARNING Excellent programs are academically challenging while also being developmentally appropriate and purposeful. This premise comes from scripture in Luke 2:52, “And Jesus grew in wisdom, and stature, and in favor with God and man.” God gave Jesus the time to grow and develop before sending Him to His ministry. We, too, must provide our children with time to develop and it cannot be rushed nor left to chance LCA’s preschool program employs purposeful learning, which is meaningful to children between the ages of three and five. It is through developmentally appropriate experiences that children begin to make connections, which grow them into life-long learners. At LCA, we understand the unique make-up of children and focus on what children do best --play. Play is a child’s best work! Play experiences capture a child’s interest, engage him/her in the learning process, and encourage the appropriate development essential for a three to five year-old. Our teachers thoughtfully design and organize their classrooms into learning centers, which assist with the intentional instruction of skills. In addition, the school day includes opportunities for physical activity either at the playground or in the gymnasium.

CURRICULUM LCA’s preschool curriculum is both developmentally appropriate and academically challenging. The curriculum is well planned and comprehensive. It effectively teaches social, emotional, cognitive, physical, and spiritual skills. The school day consists of a balance of large group, small group, and one-on-one instruction. In addition, it include includes movement, creative expression, social interaction, and problem solving. Our teachers present lessons through multi-sensory activities, in a fun and appealing environment, which stimulates growth and learning. Beyond the homeroom, our students’ school days are enriched by experiences in art, library, music, physical education, Spanish, and STEAM. In addition, our preschool students enjoy special programs such as field trips, book fairs, field day, holiday celebrations, and school-wide family events.

LOVING, NURTURING TEACHERS LCA is blessed to have experienced, qualified teachers who provide exceptional instruction. Teachers are at the heart of our program. They lovingly equip and nurture our students, preparing them for elementary school. Our teachers are the experts in early childhood education. They inspire our students to become lifelong learners. In addition to their educational backgrounds and degrees, our teachers receive on-going training annually. Most importantly, our teachers feel God’s calling on their lives to teach and serve in our educational ministry. When teachers, who love Jesus, seek to model Him as the Master Teacher, students begin to understand God is the ultimate Truth, and His truths begin to permeate their hearts and minds. Our teachers help shape what their students think, believe, and learn to love. Ultimately, the influence of a teacher shapes who a child will become.

SAFETY & SECURITY The safety and security of our students and staff is of the utmost importance. LCA does not take lightly that families are entrusting their most valuable treasure – their children- to our care. Our preschool campus is secure throughout the school day with designated badge access only. LCA is blessed to have two security officers including “Officer Andrew” at our preschool & Elementary Campus. Each morning, parents escort their preschool students to the classrooms. At that time, parents confirm if the child will leave via the carline or the after-card program. During the onboarding process, families provide the campus with a list of adults authorized to pick-up their children. Students will not be released to an unauthorized adult. LCA is also blessed to have a dedicated nurse assigned to our preschool and elementary campus. “Nurse Leslie” provides care and support with illness or injuries. Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services licenses LCA’s preschool program. Each year, they audit our program to insure it is meeting the standards, including safety and security, set forth by the state.

ADMISSIONS CRITERIA The admissions process is designed to ensure a student’s readiness and academic placement so that he or she might have a rewarding experience at LCA. We also desire to confirm compatibility in Christian values, philosophy, and essential beliefs between parents and the school so that a strong partnership is forged between the Christian home and the school. Our admissions criteria reflects our commitment to serve as a partner with the home and the local church in the Christian education of our students. Throughout the admissions process we consider the following:

MISSION COMPATIBILITY

Our policy is to offer enrollment to students of Christian parents who desire a Christ-centered education for their children. LCA requires that at least one parent be a professed Christian, growing in their faith and involved in their local church. In addition, we want to partner with families who are teaching their children what it means to have a Christian lifestyle regarding personal and family relationships, such as an ability to share love for others, demonstrating a teachable spirit, and sharing the belief that a biblical marriage is limited to a covenant relationship between a man and a woman.

ACADEMIC READINESS We seek students whose academic records demonstrate proven capability to succeed in our program. Therefore, students’ records will be carefully evaluated prior to acceptance. If a student has been receiving special support services (504 Plan, IEP, or other therapies), an initial review of documentation is required to determine academic eligibility before you begin the application process. Please contact the Admissions Office to learn more.

BEHAVIORAL HISTORY

We also seek students whose recommendations show a behavioral history that is in harmony with the behavioral expectations of LCA. The school does not admit students who have a history of disciplinary problems.
