WELCOME It is a pleasure to welcome you to Lexington Christian Academy! We are excited your family is exploring our 6th Grade Academy. One of LCA’s biggest initiatives—the 6th Grade Academy—was launched during the 2018-2019 school year. We recognized that 6th grade is a pivotal year in students’ educational journey. 6th grade students have outgrown the elementary campus but are not quite ready for junior high. For that reason, we developed a self-contained learning environment where students can grow academically, socially, and spiritually in preparation for junior high and high school. The 6th Grade Academy is uniquely designed to engage students in the learning process. Students are empowered by teachers to grow and develop important 21st century skills like critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity that prepares them for an ever-changing, highly adaptive world. Research has found that creativity in learning leads to positive cognitive outcomes, especially when supported by technology. Students who experience creative classrooms are more likely to:  Engage in problem-solving  Demonstrate critical thinking  Retain what they learn  Make connections between different subjects  Have a deeper learning of the subject matter We want our students to be creative. Dynamic resources like our Makerspace and labs engage students’ imagination, aligning innovative thinking and empowering them to produce and deliver individualized work in a highly collaborative environment. The 6th grade experience is enhanced with a number of activities including athletic teams, fine arts programs, academic team, robotics team, and outreach programs. Our 6th Grade Academy is designed to prepare students for lifelong learning, in a creative setting, where we build a strong academic base while fostering spiritual and social growth in a loving environment. We invite you to learn more about our program. Come tour our campus and discover more about a school where creativity is encouraged and our students thrive.

Mr. Coleman Marshall 6th-8th Grade Principal

OVERVIEW LOCATION LCA’s high school is housed at the Rose Campus which is located at 450 West Reynolds Road.

SCHOOL DAY 8:20AM-3:20PM, Seven Class Periods

STANDARDIZED DRESS CODE All of our students, preschool through high school have a standardized dress code. By definition, “standardized dress code” is a flexible selection of clothing from which students may choose. The dress code is designed to promote modesty, create a safe and positive climate, and ensure a distraction-free learning environment. Dress code items may be purchased from the vendor of your choice or at the school store, Wings.

LUNCH PROGRAM LCA partners with several local vendors to provide hot lunch options for our students and staff each day. LCA serves entrees from popular vendors such as Chick-Fil-A, Cane’s, Fazoli’s, and Papa John’s. Lunches can be ordered daily with the option of ordering for the whole week via the school’s parent portal. Lunches are paid via the student billing system.

SAFETY & SECURITY The safety and security of our students and staff is of the utmost importance. Our high school campus is secure throughout the school day with designated badge access only. Visitors are required to check-in at designated offices. “Healthy at School” and safety guidelines are adhered to in order to protect our employees, students and guests. At the Rose Campus, LCA is blessed to have a school nurse and a security officer, each designated to serve and support our 6th-12th grade students, their families, and our employees.

CHRIST-CENTERED EDUCATION An integral part of our 6th Grade Academy is the spiritual training our students receive through their Bible classes and weekly chapel programs. Led by our Spiritual Life Director, chapel is designed to encourage and equip students to grow stronger in their faith as they prepare for college. As Christians, we are called to be our Lord’s “hands and feet.” Our students embrace this calling and serve in a variety of ways both in the Lexington community and beyond. Students can expect: 

Biblically integrated curriculum

Daily Bible classes

Weekly chapel programs

Missions & Outreach Programs: God’s Pantry, Ronald McDonald House, and Toys for Tots

CURRICULUM Bible

The theme of our sixth grade Bible course is “Head, Heart and Hands: Living for Jesus requires all aspects of who we are.” Goals of this course include spiritual formation of the student; knowledge of how the Holy Scriptures provide the foundation for the Christian life; practical application of lessons through service projects; knowledge of the structure of the Bible; development of the Christian virtues of wisdom, love and service; and committing Scripture to memory.

Language Arts

Sixth grade language arts is a robust, multifaceted curriculum encompassing the major elements of reading and writing in preparation for the junior high years and beyond. Instruction relies heavily on text-based comprehension, development of oral vocabulary, spelling, writing, and grammar conventions. Concept knowledge is developed around both nonfiction and fiction text with a heavy reliance on fluency for each learner as students become powerful, independent learners.

Mathematics

During 6th grade, our students work on mastery of basic operations. They also cover five major groups of math skills including Number Sense, Ratios/Percents, Geometry, Algebraic Expressions, and Statistics. Some 6th graders may qualify for Pre-Algebra, where they will work at a faster pace and cover a more advanced curriculum.

Social Studies

The curriculum focuses on world history, political science, economics and geography. Units include studies on early humans and societies, foundations of Western ideas, the Roman world, the Islamic world, early Americans, renewal in Europe, and the early and modern Worlds. Students are exposed to worldwide cultures and beliefs. Students will develop critical thinking skills and make comparisons between historical and currents events.

Science

Earth science is designed to stimulate thinking and appreciation for the world that God created. The curriculum provides opportunity for a hands on experience that introduces students to a variety of areas. Students will be introduced to the science of the Earth and its place in the universe. The goal is for the students to become more aware of God’s handiwork in His creation. Topics will include: the scientific method, Earth make-up, natural disasters, weather and its functions, climate, and astronomy.

CURRICULUM Technology Integration

In sixth grade, our students have access to a dedicated device. Rather than teaching computer tasks in isolation, every teacher will now have the ability to enhance technical skills by coordinating them with in-classroom projects. Embedding these skills into real-world problems and challenges with the goal to acquire deeper knowledge is the core of project-based learning.

Art

Students will use a wide variety of media as they learn to express themselves through the visual arts. The curriculum is project based, integrated with art history and culture, and seeks to encourage students to use their own voice as they develop art skills.

Digital Citizenship

This class will help our students to become responsible digital citizens. They will learn how to practice and demonstrate responsible, safe and legal use of technology. They will learn about their rights and responsibilities while using technology and develop the knowledge and skills they will need to be confident and responsible users of digital technologies.

Shaped To Serve

“Shaped to Serve” is structured around a quote, "The place where God calls you is where your deep gladness and the world's deep hunger meet." The students will be challenged to find their "deep gladness" - which is how are they wired, what excites them, and who God has made them to be. The culminating project, initiative, or awareness campaign will focus on trying to find "the place God calls you."

Robotics

The coursework focuses primarily on engineering, technology, and computer science; however, it also provides an opportunity to integrate cross-curricular activities, such as science and mathematics, when students complete the challenges.

Fine Arts

This course is intended as an overview to the fine arts. Students are introduced to basic music, theatrical, stage and film terminology; the origins of Western Theatre; and the fundamentals of acting, through which the students develop ensemble and individual performance skills.

ADMISSIONS CRITERIA The admissions process is designed to ensure a student’s readiness and academic placement so that he or she might have a rewarding experience at LCA. We also desire to confirm compatibility in Christian values, philosophy, and essential beliefs between parents and the school so that a strong partnership is forged between the Christian home and the school. Our admissions criteria reflects our commitment to serve as a partner with the home and the local church in the Christian education of our students. Throughout the admissions process we consider the following:

MISSION COMPATIBILITY

Our policy is to offer enrollment to students of Christian parents who desire a Christ-centered education for their children. LCA requires that at least one parent be a professed Christian, growing in their faith and involved in their local church. In addition, we want to partner with families who are teaching their children what it means to have a Christian lifestyle regarding personal and family relationships, such as an ability to share love for others, demonstrating a teachable spirit, and sharing the belief that a biblical marriage is limited to a covenant relationship between a man and a woman.

ACADEMIC READINESS

We seek students whose academic records demonstrate proven capability to succeed in our program. Therefore, students’ records will be carefully evaluated prior to acceptance. If a student has been receiving special support services (504 Plan, IEP, or other therapies), an initial review of documentation is required to determine academic eligibility before you begin the application process. Please contact the Admissions Office to learn more.

BEHAVIORAL HISTORY

We also seek students whose recommendations show a behavioral history that is in harmony with the behavioral expectations of LCA. The school does not admit students who have a history of disciplinary problems. We are excited your family is exploring our school. We hope to see your future eagle at LCA in the fall. If you have any questions regarding LCA’s admissions criteria, please contact the Admissions Office at 859-422-5755 or 859-422-5733.
