We have endured a nationwide financial crisis and the event of social media. We have been supported by many businesses throughout the ten years and helped others launch along the way. We would love to hear from you, whether as a business or reader - have you read EN Magazine for ten years? Have you featured in the magazine? We would love to hear your thoughts and feedback. In this special Valentine’s issue we visit a brand new fitness venue for the whole family, a special request from a local museum and top tips on self-improvement. We keep you up to date on local news and events. We meet a local man whose sad and tragic loss of his daughter has led to creating a charity, tirelessly fundraising and generating awareness for research into brain tumours and cancer. And don’t miss our fantastic Valentine’s Gift Guide and Giveaway. Meanwhile individuals found guilty of smallerscale fly tipping face a new £300 fine from this month. The fine, discounted to £200 if paid within 10 days, will be issued to anyone responsible for illegally dumping a few bags of waste or one or two unwanted items of furniture. Councillor Seamus Quilty, Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “With the new year, you may be looking to do some work on your home or get rid of unwanted items. “In Hertsmere we’re asking residents and builders to ensure that if you use a waste carrier, you ask to see a licence and ask for a receipt. We’re also asking that if you are approached by someone either via social media or at your door offering to get rid of your waste, you report it to our Environmental Health team and where possible make a note of the vehicle registration number.” The council launched its Could this be yours?

campaign last year to tackle rising incidents of fly tipping. Since 2010, the number of incidents of fly tipping have almost doubled in the borough, from 368 in 2010-11 to 658 in 2015-16 (2). As well as leaflets, Could this be yours? banners are currently displayed on the sides of the council’s waste vehicles. In Enfield fly tippers

caught dumping rubbish on streets will now face fines of £400 after the Council doubled the penalty charge rate from £200, made possible as a result of new powers from the Deposit of Waste (Fixed Penalties) Regulations 2016. Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Daniel Anderson, said: “Increasing the fine

to £400 for those caught fly tipping not only brings us into line with the rest of London, but also gives out a strong, clear message that if we catch you trashing our borough you’ll pay a harsh penalty for the privilege. “The Council spends £4.5 million a year keeping the borough clean and residents are absolutely sick and tired putting up with people who think it’s OK to dump all manner of rubbish on our streets. It’s not, and it’s time for those responsible to pay the price.

effort into identifying and catching the people who seem intent on undermining our beautiful borough. Quite simply, it’s not OK to fly tip or drop litter. “There are plenty of legal ways of disposing of waste and we urge people to dispose of it in the correct, lawful way. It’s either that, or pay up.” Residents can report fly tipping and other issues through the Enfield Council website at www. new.enfield.gov.uk/ For more information or useful links for Hertsmere, go to www.hertsmere.gov. uk/couldthisbeyours or call our Environmental Health team on 020 8207 2277.

Dirty Restaurants Beware A major campaign to improve hygiene standards in Enfield’s restaurants has been launched by the Council. Food safety officers will be visiting take-aways, restaurants and other food outlets across the borough to check that they comply with hygiene laws and will give advice and guidance to establishments which need to clean up their act. Those that fail to do so face being closed down, prosecuted and named and shamed by Enfield Council. The clampdown builds on the work the Council has done in previous years to raise hygiene standards in Enfield. Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Daniel Anderson, said: “We have a huge number of excellent, well run and hygienic food outlets in Enfield, but, sadly, there are a number which are letting the rest of the borough down, so we’re taking action. The absolute minimum we expect from people who run food outlets is that they have clean premises and the right measures in place so that their customers health is ensured.” “We’re giving restaurants and other food establishments fair warning that we’ll be naming and shaming those who we inspect and are deemed to have unacceptable hygiene standards. Our residents

need to be assured that they can eat out safely without any fear of food poisoning.” Each business is given a Food Standards Agency hygiene rating when it is inspected by an Enfield Council food safety officer. The food safety officer inspecting the business checks how well the business is meeting the law by looking at: • how hygienically the food is handled – how it is prepared, cooked, reheated, cooled and stored • the condition of the structure of the buildings – the cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and other facilities • how the business manages and records what it does to make sure food is safe At the end of the inspection, the business is given one of the six ratings from 0-5. The top rating of ‘5’ means that the business was found to have ‘very good’ hygiene standards. Any business should be able to reach this top rating. Diners can see a business’ food hygiene rating by visiting the Food Standards Agency website www.food. gov.uk

Raising £1 million In Sue’s Name

David Taylor was heart-broken when his daughter Sue Blasotta died in 2011, aged 42, just six weeks after being diagnosed with a highly aggressive and lethal brain tumour, leaving her two children to face their teenage years without a mother. Ironically, during her lifetime, Sue had friends and family who were diagnosed with different types of cancer, inspiring her to run the Race for Life five times and also to take on the challenge of a sky dive, raising thousands of pounds for cancer research. David and his family, wife Kathleen and Sue’s siblings Angela, Nichola and Andrew set up In Sue’s Name in 2014, having been shocked to discover the lack of awareness and chronic underfunding of research into brain tumours. In Sue’s Name has now partnered with pioneering national charity, Brain Tumour Research, becoming the latest member charity to work collaboratively under its banner. In February, In Sue’s Name is launching a £1 million campaign at Brain Tumour Research’s Centre of Excellence at Queen Mary University of London, where it will be supporting vital research into the most aggressive and lethal form of brain tumour, glioblastoma multiforme. While Sue was being treated at the London

Royal Free Hospital, two other brain tumour patients from the same North London parish of St Monica’s – Palmers Green, both of whom also later died. Anthony Bourke, who was just 34 when he passed away in 2011, was in the adjacent room to Sue. Jackie McGovern, who lost her fight a year later, was 42, the same age as Sue when she died. David Taylor explained: “I can still remember my complete shock and disbelief when I discovered that brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer, yet just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this devastating disease. This is unacceptable. “Galvanised by the fact that treatments for brain tumour patients remain so limited, we set up a charity called “In Sue’s Name” to continue Sue’s legacy and we are pledging to raise £1 million over the next 10 years to fund vital research. We hope that this will lead to more effective treatments for brain tumour patients and ultimately a cure.

Local News and Events “Through our initial fundraising, we are proud today to be putting up six plaques on the Wall of Hope at Queen Mary University of London which represent six days of research funded as a legacy for Sue and other St Monica families who have lost loved ones in recent years to this devastating disease. It costs £1 million to fund a year of research – that’s £2,740 per day. In Sue’s Name, aims to help raise enough money to fight this most terrible of diseases so that one day others may be saved from the suffering that Sue and other St Monica parishioners underwent.” Sue Farrington Smith MBE, chief executive of Brain Tumour Research, said: “We are delighted to welcome our newest member charity, In Sue’s Name, into our brain tumour community.

This partnership will help us in our mission to help people fight against this devastating disease. Ultimately, it will lead to better outcomes for patients – from improved awareness for earlier diagnosis, to the development of more effective, personalised treatments and targeted drugs. Through the funds generated, we will be able to significantly fast-track progress towards finding a cure for brain tumours.” “Today, the charity supports one of the UK’s largest collaboration of laboratory-based brain tumour scientists, working across a network of four Research Centres of Excellence. Our campaigning at Westminster has driven the formation of a Government Task and Finish Working Group, raising awareness at the

highest levels.” Brain Tumour Research is campaigning to see the national spend on brain tumour research increased to £30 million - £35 million a year, in line with breast and leukaemia, in order to advance treatments and ultimately find a cure. www.insuesname.org www. braintumourresearch.org As part of David’s fundraising efforts he has organised Greek Charity Night to be held at the Penridge Suite on Friday March 10th 2017. It promises to be an exciting event with wonderful Greek food, a display of traditional Greek Dancing performed by The Elites, and music by the well known Greek

band Cleopatra hopefully keeping you on the dance floor all evening! To book - contact events@ insuesname.org or call me on 07940 877486 to book your places or to offer assistance. If you would like to make a donation please go to www.totalgiving.co.uk/ donate/in-sues-name or www.justgiving.com/

I am very practical and like using my hands, and I now have a much better knowledge of the job and the tools you need to use. Local News and Events Dujardin Mews site are expected to be chosen for trainee positions or apprenticeships with JBT and Countryside on a much larger project to build nearly 1,000 new homes on the Alma Estate. “Dujardin Mews has not only provided a platform for training in construction, it has also presented a clear progression for CONEL students to move on to accredited apprenticeships on the Alma Estate over the next three years,” said Kevin O’Connor, Head of Social Responsibility and Inclusion at Durkan. “The quality of students from the College has been excellent, and we were delighted to offer the opportunity for them to gain experience on a working construction site.” The Construction Skills Network’s Industrial Insights 2016-2020 report

expects the industry to grow by 2.5% each year – 3.5% in Greater London. Cllr Alan Sitkin, Cabinet Member for Economic Regeneration and Business at Enfield Council, said: “The large number of

massive development schemes planned in Enfield means it is a hugely exciting time for the construction industry in this borough. It is vital that schemes such as these seek to raise awareness

of the opportunities that exist for young people in the construction and other industries.”

Burst with Confidence in 2017 Do you lack confidence? Feel nervous in certain situations? Well this inspirational event is at Enfield Enterprise, Enfield Business Centre, could be just for you. Confident people tend to be more optimistically minded, which results in them not only making the most of opportunities but also in them expecting a positive outcome, which increases the likelihood of that outcome materialising. And, importantly, their confidence allows them to enjoy the process more. So a real three-way win - with confidence you take more chances, enjoy taking them and enjoy more frequent success! What’s more, success is less related to intelligence than it is to levels of confidence. So if you’re holding yourself back in any way, based on a perception of your own shortcomings, each of those shortcomings is likely to be less relevant than your level of confidence. Former Life Coach of the Year Charlotta Hughes has been specialising in Confidence Coaching for over 10 years and in this time, she’s repeatedly seen the magic that follows once clients’ confidence is realised. That’s why she’s now packaged all the ways she’s seen clients struggle and set themselves up to fail in various ways along

with the insights, tips, techniques and wisdom that has allowed them all to flourish and grow with levels of confidence most of them never thought possible in her first book What’s Your Excuse for Not Being More Confident. You are invited to hear some of her gems in person at this inspirational talk which is packed with aha moments and leaves you equipped to burst with confidence in 2017. For your personal and your business success! Arrival from 9.30am for a 10am talk followed by Q&A and you’ll come away with a signed copy of Charlotta’s book. Bouncing is Good Fun! There is a growing trend in the UK for trampoline arenas. Finally Enfield has its own – jump in. Not ones to shy away from something new, EN Magazine jumped in. Within easy reach of Enfield’s main roads, jump in is conveniently based just off the A10 at Lumina Way and has ample parking. I’d planned my afternoon, let the kids get tired jumping away and I’ll sit in the café area and relax- but I could not resist taking part as well! Our group consisted of three 14 year olds, a 7 year old and two 2 year olds. Could we keep them all safe and entertained? I needn’t have worried. Upon arrival there was a simple waiver form to fill in – not easy with very excited 2 year olds, so if you are planning a visit perhaps do this online first. Booking online is very easy too, with lots of sessions, including Toddler Time, great value Teen Nights and Student Takeover, along with Open Sessions. On your first visit the cost

of entry includes special trampolining socks which are yours to keep for future visits. Open sessions are organised into hourly blocks. Our group was called into a room to watch a the short safety video. To my surprise, it was even engaging for the 2 year olds! Simple, fun images and a quirky audio clearly laying out the rules to keep yourself and other users safe. Then, socks were donned ready for our session. Bags can be safely stored behind the counter, however, for future trips I will bring less baggage! Being in charge of the toddlers, we headed to the under-fives area. A set of 9 trampolines with balls and soft blocks. Much to my surprise, the toddlers appeared to have paid attention to the safety video and stayed on their own trampoline! In fact, during the hour it was the adults who the Marshals had to remind the rules to! jump in pride themselves on their staff, and I have to say, I fully agree. They

were all approachable, very attentive and assertive when necessary. The teenagers were off exploring each of the zones – the main trampoline

floor with 120 trampolines; Trampoline Walls; Foam Pit; Battle Beam; Giant Air Bag; Twist Ladder; Dodgeball and Trapeze. As it was an off peak session the toddlers were allowed

Local News and Events can add to the challenge by adding a two year old shaking the ladder! The most triumphant at this challenge was the seven year old who overcame her initial anxieties to ring the bell again and again. Considering our group consisted of toddlers through to over forty year olds, we all enjoyed a game of dodgeball and daring to cross, and battle on, the Battle Beam. I’m not sure who was the most disappointed when our session was called to an

we were soon giggling and jumping across the trampolines. Soon a challenge began to see who could ring the bell at the top of the Twist Ladder. This activity tests your balance skills, you

A Trip to the Pub is Good for Your Health Did you give up alcohol for January or as part of your new years resolution? It may be time to think again as research shows drinking in moderation with friends could be good for your health! New research, which shows that moderate alcohol consumption with friends at a local pub may be linked to improved wellbeing, has been published in the journal Adaptive Human Behaviour and Physiology. While most studies warn of the health risks of alcohol consumption, researchers at the University of Oxford have looked at whether having a drink may play a role in improving social cohesion, given its long association with human social activities. Combining data from three separate studies - a questionnaire-based study of pub clientele, observing conversational behaviour in pubs, and a national survey by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) – the researchers looked at whether the frequency of alcohol consumption or the type of venue affected peoples’ social experiences and wellbeing. They found that people who have a ‘local’ that they visit regularly tend to feel more socially engaged and contented, and are more likely to trust other members of their community. They also observed that those without a local pub had significantly smaller social networks and felt less engaged with, and trusting of, their local communities. The study also showed that those who drank at local pubs tended to socialise in smaller groups, which encouraged whole-group conversation, while those drinking in citycentre bars tended to be in much larger groups, and

participated much less in group conversation. Professor Robin Dunbar of the University of Oxford’s Experimental Psychology department, said: “This study showed that frequenting a local pub can directly affect peoples’ social network size and how engaged they are with their local community, which in turn can affect how satisfied they feel in life. “Our social networks provide us with the single most important buffer against mental and physical illness. While pubs traditionally have a role as a place for community socialising, alcohol’s role appears to be in triggering the endorphin system, which promotes social bonding. Like other complex bonding systems such as dancing, singing and storytelling, it has often been adopted by large social communities as a ritual associated with bonding.” Colin Valentine, CAMRA’s National Chairman, said: “Personal wellbeing and happiness have a massive impact not only on individual lives, but on communities as a whole. It will be of no surprise to CAMRA members that pubs play such a pivotal role in a person’s wellbeing, but it is fantastic news to hear that this wisdom has now been confirmed by research.” “Pubs play a unique role in offering a social environment to enjoy a drink with friends in a responsible, supervised community setting. For this reason, we all need to do what we can to ensure that everyone has a ‘local’ near to where they live or work - the first step to which is strengthening planning protection for pubs to stem the 21 pubs closing across this country each week.”

Future Plans

How to stick to Resolutions and Plans in 2017 How many of us made resolutions on NewYear’s Eve? “I’d like to lose weight” “I want to exercise more and get fit” “I would like to quit smoking soon” “I would like to change my Job” “I want to make more money” “I would like to travel and to see the world” And how many of us have stuck to these New Year resolutions? We start the New Year with great expectations of achieving the goals that we set (often under the influence of alcohol) and then after a couple of days or weeks into the New Year we give up!!! It has been said that everyone has goals. We have goals to save for our future, or to travel. We have goals to stay in our current relationship or find a new one. We have goals about what we need or want to make our lives more enjoyable and more in line with our values. Top New Years resolutions typically focus on losing weight, learning a new skill or even finding another job. However, new life coach and productivity app LifeTracker research has exposed the things we didn’t quite manage to accomplish in 2016: 39% of us regularly put off going to the gym 45% delayed learning a new skill e.g. a new language

18

EN MAGAZINE - issue 85 February 2017

27% went back on their promise to update their CV 24% didn’t see as much of their friends or family as they’d set out to do With so many goals left incomplete, it’s no surprise the people are feeling glum. So for 2017 LifeTracker wants to inspire positive thinking with a new way for people to stick to their resolutions. Using Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms, the LifeTracker app will learn your routine and is context-aware to remind you of what you need to do to achieve your goals at the perfect time for you. Supporting this clear link between satisfaction and achieving life goals Hilda Burke, a leading psychotherapist and life coach has partnered with LifeTracker and commented: “This widespread failure to achieve life goals triggers enormous frustration in many of the clients who come to see me. I believe that authentic success stems from the feeling that we have when we know we’re reaching the goals we ourselves have set. To actually follow through on the things we set out to do, no matter how small, builds confidence in our own abilities and can aspire us to on to achieve much greater things.” “At the start of every new year, many people set new goals but only a few actually go on to achieve these,” says

Future Plans Philip Clarke, Lecturer of Psychology at University of Derby Online Learning (UDOL) “Goal setting is one of the most effective skills an individual can learn to do, yet so many do it incorrectly.” “The biggest mistake is that many people identify what they want to achieve but do not think about how to do it. They set long-term outcome goals such as getting a “dream body” or to spend more time with family and, as a starting point, these sound like good goals. The problem is that the goal-setting process for many people stops there. People who develop action plans experience less anxiety, more confidence, improved concentration and greater satisfaction about achieving their goals and are more likely to succeed.”

Step 5-Time-bound Bad Goal: I want to fit into my old jeans Good Goal: I am going to get into my old jeans by June 1, 2016 Setting a timeline for when you want to achieve your goal is important. This allows you to develop a goal attainment attitude.

Step 6- Exciting

Seven keys steps to take in ensuring you create an effective New Year’s plan:

Bad Goal: I want to save money Good Goal: I will save money so I can take my children on holiday to Disneyland Your goal needs to be exciting. If planned correctly, this can help you stay motivated when you are experiencing a particulary tough decision that takes you away from your goal. Try coming up with different and interesting ways of making your goals exciting.

Step 1- Make it Specific

Step 7-Recorded

Bad goal: I want to save more money this year Good goal: I will save £6,000 this year Goals need to be specific, as humans we work better when we have a clear goal in mind. The ‘want to do my best’ goal can be great for motivation but being specific can help give you a clear focus on what needs to be done.

We make many goals in our head that we end up forgetting so “ink it, don’t think it”. By recording your goal, you make a conscious commitment that this is what you want to achieve. Once you have made this commitment, put it in places that can easily be seen. Put it in your gym bag, put it on your bathroom mirror or your kitchen fridge.

Step 2- Can it be Measured? Bad Goal: I want to lose weight Good Goal: I will lose 2 stone by my son’s wedding As you can see in the above goal, it’s specific but it’s also allows us to measure it and see progression as time passes. This helps with keeping you motivated as you can see how far you have come.

Step 3- Is it Achievable or Attainable? Bad Goal: I want to speak to my friends on the phone each week Good Goal: I will use the bus journey home to talk with my friends every week on the phone. This is a key component of the action plan. Is the goal I am setting attainable? You want a balance of challenge, to keep you motivated, but not too hard as you might lose focus and experience feelings of anxiety and stress. You shouldn’t increase your goal by more than 5% of your current performance or ability.

Step 4-Is it Realistic? Bad Goal: I want to fit into my old jeans Good Goal: I am going to get into my old jeans by June 1, 2016 Make sure your goal can be achieved realistically in the time frame you are looking to achieve them in. Setting a timeline for when you want to achieve your goal is important. This is the part where you need to make use of setting goals that are both long and short term; our main goal may be 6-8 months away but by setting short term goals you will always have an upcoming goal to works towards.

As you can see all the good goals are in a positive assertive fashion. This type of mind-set will help you stay motivated for achieving those goals. So if your plan is to look good on the beach this summer or to just fit into a smaller dress or jean size then now could be the time to start. Eating just a little less than you need each day, starting now, could easily lose you at least 2 lbs a week which means a massive three stones by summer. And if you think that’s a stretch, at a pound a week you’d still be a stone and a half lighter. These are just some of the ways Heather Newham, the owner of Practically Slim, encourages her dieters to deal with their demons, eating an elephant one step at a time. The secret to the company’s success is that they know how you tick. Proven transactional analysis, cognitive behavioural therapy and neuro-linguistic programming methods are combined with a range of diet plans with great success. Have a look at the grateful people Heather’s supported right through losing sometimes many stones of weight. One such, Katerina, who lost four and a half stones in four months, explains that “Heather helped me to learn that whilst I may know all the facts and figures about how to be healthy, I needed support to actually live it.” Another successful dieter, Sophie, describes Heather as “the best counsellor I’ve ever had and I continue to lose weight because of her support, encouragement and advice.” These effective approaches are passed on to coaches trained by Heather, spreading the word throughout the country via local, friendly groups.

Does this whet your appetite for beach babe success? Have a look at Practically Slim’s website for more www. practicallyslim.com and consider whether you can walk away from the pies without their support. Telephone Heather on 07970 252647 If losing weight is not your only goal but your looking to get fit as well, you are not alone Setting up a training plan with a partner increases your chance of achieving your goal and makes your journey more fun along the way. Organising gym sessions and fitness dates together means you’re less likely to quit, as you have the extra motivation of not letting the other person down. With twice the motivation you’re twice as likely to succeed. Set SMART Goals SMART is a very familiar acronym in the world of Personal Trainers and it helps to develop fitness goals into almost a clear set of instructions, which gives them far more of a chance of success. Smart stands for, Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time. To make a goal SMART you need to look at it in relation to each of these area’s. Specifying your goal means making it clear exactly what it is rather than a vague idea, this way we can decipher whether you’ve achieved it or not with a yes/no answer. Eg, lose weight becomes lose 5% bodyfat. The next area to target is measurable, so this means instead of saying perhaps improve fitness, set a goal to achieve 5k run under 30 minutes . Achievable addresses whether your goal is far fetched or realistic, reflect upon whether you can actually make this happen. Next we address the relevance of the goal, by this what we’re talking about is whether the goal means something to you, or you’re following a trend, or a friends goals. If your goals are relevant to your lifestyle it’s far more likely to succeed than if you’re just following trend. The final part of a smart goal is the time frame, setting a goal within a specific timeframe can help to make it clear whether the goal has been achieved or not and can help you to monitor whether you are on track for your finishing date. Always set a timeframe.

“To achieve a goal, be it big like buying a dream home, or small like dropping a few pounds, you need to set up set yourself up for success. Commit to small changes in habits rather than mammoth New Years resolutions. “To get yourself motivated, really think about your resolution. What will you get from it, how will it feel when you’ve achieved it? Forget about what you think you should be doing or even worse what you think someone else thinks you should be doing. When you’re thinking about what you’ll get from your resolution think more about what you’ll get in the short term more than the long term. “ “If you’re enjoying something in the here an now it’s much likely that you’ll continue doing it rather than if you feel it’s a chore. Our limbic brain governs our decision making processes and before something becomes an engrained habit it will drive our behaviour. The simple rule that drives limbic brain decision making processes is towards pleasure away from pain, towards feeling good away from feeling bad.” “Always start small. If you’ve never been off the couch in your life then it’s unlikely that you’ll jump to running an hour 5 times a week. Break your overall goal into smaller hurdles. Start with something that is almost impossible not to do. For example, I had meditating for 20 mins a day on my New Years Resolution list for the last 5 years. Then last year I changed my commitment to the bare minimum of placing my meditation cushion on the floor each day and just sitting on it. Now some days I don’t meditate, but most I do.” “People often put their New Years Resolution on a list and then forget about them. You need to remind yourself to keep them alive. Share with people what you are doing, maybe even finding someone to do it with you. One of the most successful aspects of creating a habit is creating a prompt or a trigger for yourself. Take a habitual pattern that you already have and then hook the new habit onto the end of it. In the case of creating my meditation practice, my trigger was my morning shower. That’s my reminder to put down my meditation cushion.” Finally, acknowledge your success and do something to congratulate yourself or celebrate. This might be tracking it on one of the many habit apps that are out there (Coach.me is my favourite) or it could be celebrating with a friend. My sister finishes her weekly 5km walks with a cup of coffee with her friends.»
