some communities may feel it is important to retain a public payphone in their local area. “While it is not our decision whether the phones are removed, we’re keen to give local residents a chance to have their say on this issue. Local News and Events with 60 per cent looking Top 20 things needed to for retailer discounts, make the shopping trip:

The Perfect Shopping Trip With the festive shopping season just around the corner new research has revealed the top 20 things needed to make the perfect shopping trip. According to a survey of 2,000 Brits, the perfect shop is at a location where you can shop, eat and socialise in one place, with several spots to socialise and a lot of convenience when it comes to paying. The study also found that the perfect shopping trip lasts three hours, includes a visit to nine stores and involves only seven minutes queuing. It also includes the purchase of five items and an overall spend of almost £118. Consumer finance expert and TV presenter Jasmine Birtles said: “For many, shopping is not just a job that needs doing but a hobby. People will go on a shopping trip as a fun way to spend a Saturday or a day off work rather than simply because they need to buy something. Shopping is one of the UK’s favourite leisure activities, but shoppers are getting savvier and more demanding as purchasing online now offers them all sorts of attractive retail options. Discounts, loyalty points, freebies and other incentives are all now part of what the British shopper expects when they go out to spend their money. They’re also looking for speed and convenience with their transactions so that they can spend more time with the fun stuff like trying on clothes and eating in cafes. A

40 per cent wanting free coffee or cake, and 35 per cent on the hunt for restaurant discounts and offers.

contactless credit card with shopping rewards neatly combines the two, so it’s likely to be very popular with shopping devotees.” The study, of 2,000 Brits found the perfect shopping trip involves trying on or testing six items from nine shops after starting at 10.28 on a Saturday morning and finishing with a meal out. The total cost of the day, which includes a refuel break for coffee and cake, comes in at £118. Technology and social media is playing a huge role in the shopping experience, with shoppers between the ages of 18 and 44 updating social media five times. On top of that, they will send at least one text and one picture to get advice from friends and family before making a purchase. Two in five will also use their mobile to compare prices between shops, and a quarter will go on to buy an item on their smart phone whilst out shopping. It also found Brits would prefer to be accompanied by their partner, and half said they would make the day out extra special by going for a meal together after trawling the shops. A third will go for a drink, 21 per cent will head to the cinema, and one in 10 will take part in a familyfriendly activity such as bowling. Researchers also found three-quarters are most likely to shop in places where they can earn rewards for their spending,

The study was commissioned by shopping centres intu and credit card experts MBNA to support the launch of the intu credit card. Roger Binks, Customer Experience director at intu, said: “Everyone’s expectations of what makes for a great shopping trip have changed a lot over the last few years. This research, however, shows that the majority of us will still leave the house in return for a great day out, a chance to try out items and earn valuable rewards that they can’t get online. Michael Donald, MBNA’s Commercial and Payments executive, added: “It’s clear from this research that we’re a nation of sophisticated and savvy shoppers. This is why MBNA, the experts in credit cards and intu the experts in retail, have collaborated to develop a unique proposition – the intu credit card. “The intu credit card is a new breed of reward card that offers a range of benefits whenever customers spend. Cardholders can access exclusive offers with retail and leisure brands in intu centres, including Lakeside and Watford), from entertainment to leisure and dining in a way that they want to pay – from contactless to Apple Pay or Android Pay.”

Tickets will be priced at £15 on the door and £12* in advance. AFE London Art Antiques Interiors Fair will take place at the ExCeL London. Fair opening times will be announced shortly. Christmas cheer for talented young artists Christmas has come early for five young budding artists who picked up prizes in this year’s Christmas card competition run by Hertsmere council. All primary schools in the borough were invited to take part in our 11th Annual Art Contest at the beginning of this term to design a Christmas greeting card for the council. We received more than 300 entries

from schools across the borough. Judging took place at the end of October, with the Mayor of Hertsmere, Cllr Pete Rutledge, along with three family friends - Katie, Talia and Joe - forming the judging panel. The winners were Alicia Downey, aged 11, from Haberdashers’ Aske’s School for Girls in Elstree, whose card has been chosen as the council’s official e-card and Eva Harris, aged nine, from

Ladbrooke’s JMI school in Potters Bar, whose card will be made into the Mayor’s official card. The Mayor also chose three runners-up whose designs particularly caught his eye: Evie Duddles, aged five and Hana Mehmood, aged seven, both from Haberdashers’ Aske’s School for Girls and Leila Delandro, aged 10 from Bushey. Mayor Cllr Pete Rutledge, said: “It was an opportunity for the children of Hertsmere to showcase

their work and let their imaginations take over, and it was clear from the outset that it would be a difficult task to pick the best five cards. “Congratulations to all the winners and we’d like to say a really big thank you to all the children and schools that took part.” All five winners received a certificate, gift voucher, a large poster version of their design and a pack of their own cards to give to friends and family at a presentation .

Christmas Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) New CPZ Consultation – This will have a major impact upon ALL residents. I have just been looking at the Local Councils website and have found a consultation document on the introduction of another CPZ (Controlled Parking Zone). This will, I believe, have a huge impact upon all residents of the borough in the run up to and including Christmas day. Please read the following synopsis as a matter of urgency and take the appropriate action. Background

2/ In addition, to assist with improving the health of the Borough residents and in conjunction with Cycle plans, the Council has interpreted the EU control documents in relation to harmful emissions from motor vehicles should and will, from this day forward, include reindeer emissions (droppings). These emissions have been considered as harmful as they could cause injury and possible breathing difficulties when dropped from a height – reindeers will be travelling through the sky remember. This levy is to cover the cost of removal and disposal upon council flower beds of said emissions and any possible ensuing claims for compensation against the Council.

The CPZ is to be introduced within the Local Council area. It is intended to ban ALL SLEIGHS from parking and unloading on any roof without a permit during the hours of; 22.00 hrs 24/12/16 until 05.00 hrs 25/12/16. The upshot is that Mr/Mrs/Ms/Miss S Claus and/or his/ her representatives must obtain, before commencement of the CPZ period, a permit to be allowed to park upon a roof within the Local Council area to fulfil the activity of delivering presents. Current Santa parking dispensation, which has been around since records existed (Digital Ones) providing free access, will be revoked for this period only. In addition, upon payment of the fee, Santa will be required to submit a Sleigh Flight Plan. This plan will confirm that Santa will use only the hugely popular segregated Sleigh Lane’s introduced following a consultation that was publicised in the Outer Hebrides Times and received one vote, from the Cabinet Member for Democracy. The minutes of the Cabinet meeting when the Sleigh Lanes were approved, obtained by EN Magazine, record the Cabinet Member for Democracy saying to fellow Members “We asked, they responded and incentivised by the 100% positivity of those who took part, we took action. Democracy in action, but don’t tell anyone”. Failure to comply with the Sleigh Plan could result in confiscation of Sleigh, reindeer and/ or a fine.

Costs The cost criteria are based on the following; 1/ With the introduction of the Borough Public Spaces Protection Order, any sleighs entering the Borough airspace having paid the following levies will be limited to four reindeers only, must be tethered to the sleigh at all time and under the control of a qualified operative (Elf ) while deliveries are made. The sleigh charges are calculated as follows; 1 x Reindeer sleigh £69.00 2 x Reindeer sleigh £79.00 3 x Reindeer sleigh £89.00 4 x Reindeer sleigh £180.00

The levy will be based upon the CC (Cubic Capacity) of a single reindeer and are; Up to 1600 CC = 100g of emission @ 20p per mile; Up to 2000 CC = 100g of emission @ 30p per mile; 2000 CC and above = 100g of emission @ 99p per mile: All permits must be displayed in a prominent position on the sleigh. In addition, any Claus applying for a permit over the age of 65 will NOT be exempt from paying the charges or receive a % reduction. This is to comply with, I believe the ‘Why treat people differently and lose revenue’ policy recently introduced.

Enforcement. It is also proposed that a sleigh no fly zone will be introduced across the skies of the Local Council area. This will enable enforcement of any unauthorised incursions to be undertaken during the CPZ operational times mentioned earlier. This enforcement, will be undertaken by a new task force of specially and highly equipped PCSO’s (Politically Correct Santa Observers). Using the latest telescopes, loud hailers and a Smart Pen and Paper the PCSO’s will observe sleigh movements, identify the validity of the permit, and confirm it’s not a fake. If identified as not having the correct documentation, the PCSO will shout, using the loud hailer “Oi, you, Santa, you should not be here so please leave immediately”. Failure by Santa to observe the lawful command of the PCSO the PCSO will take photographic evidence using the latest Box Brownie, which could be used in possible future prosecution (s). If any sleigh is found within the Local Council area without a permit, unattended or in breach of the maximum safe Reindeer limit mentioned above, and can be safely reached, it will be clamped and the reindeer(s)

Are You Really Feeling Fine? A survey into the emotions of the nation has revealed that Brits are feeling ‘fine’. Apparently. A study of 2,000 Britons has found that the average adult will say ‘I’m fine’ 14 times a week, though really just 19 per cent mean it. Almost a third of those surveyed said they often lie about how they are feeling to other people, while one in ten went as far to say they always lie about their emotional state. And this dishonesty goes both ways, with 59 per cent of us expecting the answer to be a lie when we ask others “How are you feeling?” Jenny Edwards, Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation who commissioned the research said: “While it may appear that most of us are happy openly discussing feelings, these survey results reveal that many of us are really just sticking to a script. “This creates an illusion of support. On the surface, we’re routinely checking in with each other but beneath that, many of us feel unable to say how we’re really feeling.” Men are more than twice as likely to be dishonest to others when it comes to their emotions, with 22 per cent admitting they always lie about how they feel, compared to 10 per cent of women. Women however are more likely to be hurt emotionally. Forty one per cent have regretted opening up to someone in the past, compared to 29 per cent of men. Conversely, 44 per cent of those surveyed said that they have regretted asking somebody how they were doing after receiving an answer they weren’t prepared for. As for those ‘fine’ Brits, 34 per cent use “I’m fine” as a response because it is more convenient than explaining how they really feel, while 23 per cent say it because they think the person asking isn’t really interested. Strangely, we are more likely to reveal our true feelings to a stranger than our work colleagues, while our grandparents bring out the honest side in us, with less than one per cent of the sample willing to fib to gran or grandad. We are also three times more likely to disguise our feelings from Mum than from Dad, and feel more comfortable discussing our emotions on social media and online forums than with our friends directly.

When quizzed on the people in their lives they receive emotional support from, a fifth of Brits said they could use a lot more guidance and support, while 28 per cent think they would benefit from more supportive people in their lives. In a question aimed at uncovering our attitudes towards our own emotions, just one in ten people enjoy opening up, while the majority remain indifferent to expressing themselves to others. Fifty two per cent actively dislike discussing their emotions, and one in seven say they do not have an outlet in their lives where they can express how they truly feel. The study also explored the emotional profile of the participants. When asked which emotions they expressed most commonly, a third of respondents chose anxiety. Eighteen per cent chose depression, 15 per cent chose boredom and 11 per cent chose loneliness. More encouragingly, 21 per cent said they felt affection most frequently, and 20 per cent chose love. Jenny Edwards continued: “The people around us in our lives are crucial for our mental health; people with strong connections live happier, healthier and longer lives than those without. That’s why we all need a healthy network of friends and family who we are comfortable to confide in when we need to. “Next time someone asks “how are you?”, try going off the standard script and say the truth instead of ‘I’m fine’ and see how a more meaningful conversation unfolds.” The Mental Health Foundation has launched an ‘I’m Fine’ campaign to encourage Brits to open up about mental health and ‘bring back meaning’ to daily conversations.

Top Tips for making it through ‘Dry January’ Dry January is the perfect way for your body and wallet to recover from an indulgent Christmas, not to mention New Year celebrations.

being drunken idiots around you.

By giving up your old friend alcohol for a mere 31 days, you will save a few quid, lose a few pounds, and feel more energised and refreshed in the process. But for some people that’s not as easy as it sounds. January has five whole booze free weekends to get through.

Replace visiting your old friend alcohol with seeing real actual people that you care about. Arrange to go and see that old friend you’ve been meaning to visit, visit you parents, or make time for your partner. Booking a romantic city break is the perfect idea as it takes you away for a weekend of relaxation, and no pressure to go to the pub with your friends. The Arch London has an indulgent ‘Play Package’, perfect for couples looking to get away for some romantic alone time.

Restaurant Manager at The Arch London in Marylebone Tugend Demir has provided 10 top tips for getting through the month.

Don’t hibernate

The worst thing you can possibly do is to hole yourself up in your house and attempt to hibernate. Make it your mission to get up and make the most of your hangover free weekends and mornings. Plan activities you would never normally get round to at times you would never usually be up.

Ditch cocktails for detoxing mocktails

Get drunk on love

Try a new type of Exercise

Taking up a new exercise for the month will boost your levels of serotonin plus giving you something else to focus on. Try a ‘Ravercise’ classes – think daytime clubbing without the booze – for your dancing hit while staying firmly on the wagon.

Don’t settle for plain old tap water when you go out. Drinking mocktails is a great way to get through dry January, as you are still treating yourself to a luxurious drink, minus the calories and headache the next morning. At The Arch London we offer a ‘Virgin Vera’ mocktail made with detoxing Aloe Vera water, muddled Fresh Lime, Raspberries and fresh Guava Juice.

Think positive

Know your numbers

Tell Everyone

Read it and weep. A Pina Colada cocktail with rum has 644 calories. That’s more than a Big Mac burger. A pint of larger has 180 calories – more than a small slice of chocolate cake. And a large glass of white wine is 185 calories – the equivalent of 4 fish fingers. Calculate exactly how many calories you will save by ditching the booze – odds are you’ll be shocked by how many you can save.

Plan a holiday

Planning a holiday is the perfect way to motivate yourself during dry January. Putting all the money you’ve saved on booze into a ‘holiday piggy bank’ will be a visible inspiration to keep going, along with your shrinking waistline of course. Win, win.

Recruit a partner in crime

Your driathlon will be about a million times easier if you have a least one of your friends on board the good ship sensible. You’ll have a sober partner in crime to go out with and look suitably smug while your other friends are

16

Don’t picture your month of sobriety as something negative. Think of it as something great you are achieving purely for yourself. Rather than focusing on denying yourself alcohol, envision your success and how happy you will be at the end of the month when you have reached your goal. By telling everyone you are never drinking ever again (well, for January) will increase your chances of success. Why? Because your feelings of shame will be increased by about 98% if your friends or family catch you clutching a sneaky gin & tonic when you shouldn’t be.

Cut back, don’t cut out

If all else fails, simply cut back on your alcohol intake and set yourself an achievable goal per week. This will be much more easy to sustain and will certainly alleviate any January blues. There are also plenty of other ways to put goodness into your body, by upping your intake of fruit and vegetables, drinking more water, and taking supplements such as Milk Thistle which protect the liver from alcohol damage and premature ageing by helping to regenerate liver cells. funnel (75cl) £27.99 Waitrose. A big, seductive, brooding Port packed with prune and strawberry jam flavours. It has silky smooth tannins with a rich, ripe fruit palate and a gorgeous finish. For the right chemistry this Christmas, experiment with Dark

Matter Spiced Rum.

Pushing the boundaries of science and art is proving a successful formula for Dark Matter Scotland’s first and only purpose built rum distillery. Dark Matter has been placed at the top of the table, winning a Gold Medal in the 2016 Global Rum Masters. This molasses-based rum features full bodied notes of long pepper, fresh ginger, green peppercorns and allspice. It has smooth body with a warm spicy finish, perfect as a winter warmer. In the words of its creators, the taste is the equivalent of “warping into a liquid black hole but without every atom in your body being crushed to an infinitely small point”. It is recommended to mix with a good ginger beer/ale and a slice of lime.

Serve the tagine and enjoy, use the toasted flacked almond and some chopped coriander to garnish the dish.
