Then, he’s considered a pioneer in broadcast journalism tackling weighty issues considered inappropriate for local sports segments. But Dale Hansen loves a good controversy. In September he retired after nearly 50 years of reporting. Could this really be the end of the Dallas icon? We explain his colorful history and contemplate what might be next for the Hall of Fame broadcaster.

Nestled near Dallas Fort Worth International Airport is a quaint town loaded with entertainment — festivals, wineries, shops, super cool Hotel Vin and an eyeopening new food hall. Meet Grapevine, the Christmas capital of Texas and your next getaway destination. Beauty alert: DHM lives on the leading edge of trends, and this issue is no exception. We give you the skinny on some of the best indie beauty brands in the business, grown right here in North Texas. While we’re at it, holiday shopping is a full contact sport in Big D. Our annual gift guide will provide innovative suggestions just in time for that special season. Ho-Ho-Ho! Our Live Like a Local series is always fun as we explore unique areas all over town. Now, we step inside one of Dallas’s oldest and hippest neighborhoods. Get to know Oak Lawn. Immersive Van Gogh projection experiences are all over the country, but we’ve got the real thing: “Van Gogh and the Olive Groves” at the Dallas Museum of Art. See our story for the deets on this fabulous show featuring 22 Van Gogh paintings.

North Texas has cranked up the volume on a variety of concerts, festivals, Broadway performances and more on stages all over our area just about every night of the week. Check out The Scene, which details more than 100 curated events each month from October through December. We consider it the most complete events calendar around. We’ve also got the scoop on a diversity of top restaurants, trendy watering holes, extraordinary shopping and more. Finally, our Parting Shot goes green! That’s because of a serious commitment to cultivating more parks in Downtown Dallas. It’s great news, and we are excited to share. Please enjoy this new edition of Dallas Hotel Magazine with our compliments. It’s the definitive guide for discerning visitors to Big D.

drunk? Rape a woman? People are OK with that. But love another man? Now you've gone too far.” The report struck nerves, gaining widespread attention and features in the New York Daily News, Newsweek, People Magazine and more. As the story swirled publicity flourished. Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres invited Hansen on her show on Valentine’s Day in 2014 to discuss his comments. Hansen subsequently questioned criticism of NFL players for kneeling during the National Anthem to protest police brutality and racial inequality. Again his comments blew up, receiving millions of views and magnifying his influence.

16

D A L L A S H OT E L M A G A Z I N E

In 2017, the New York Times profiled “The Progressive Voice Bursting From Texas and Spreading Everywhere.” But Hansen was just getting started. The uncompromising commentaries kept coming about once a month, touching hot buttons such as racism, the epidemic in gun violence and school shootings, politics and politicians, veterans affairs and the traumatic cost of war. He even exposed his own deficiencies as a parent and candidly discussed being sexually assaulted by an adult when he was 10 years old. Nothing was off-limits. As a result of his frank delivery and uncanny ability to connect with people, Hansen’s fame extends far beyond Dallas-Fort Worth, reaching

national audiences with stinging commentaries on a variety of social topics that had previously been considered forbidden in a local sportscast. In March 2019, Hansen received perhaps the most important professional recognition of his career when he was honored by the Radio Television Digital News Foundation with its prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. The evening also honored slain Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi and Shepard Smith of Fox News and CNN. Hansen accepted the award to the only standing ovation of the evening, telling the audience, "What we do matters; what we do is too important to give up now.” When Hansen announced his retirement in May, he made a point of saying that all good things come to an end, and that he’d been waiting 25 years for the Cowboys to win another Super Bowl and just couldn’t wait any longer. It’s doubtful Hansen’s voice has been silenced forever. Insiders expect to see him working the talk circuit, or perhaps with a national gig on radio or via the Internet. Time will tell.
