Burstingwithenergy,thePreschool3and4 studentsscatteredontheelementaryplayground playingtag,badminton,ridingswings,drawingon thegroundwithchalk,andridingcartsasthe teacherscarriedthemaround.Studentsinlower gradeswereofferedrecesstimestostayactive andletofftheirenergy.

One of the preschoolers, Yuchen Yi’s (P4), go-to duringrecesswasto“playwithhotwheeltoys, trainstrucksandspaceships.”Healsoenjoyed “writinglettersandnumbers.”

Insidetheclassrooms,theylearnedEnglish throughexploringthedifferenttypesofweather andcolors,andtheyalsoimprovedtheirlistening skillsbyreadingchildren’sbooks.Theymatched picturesofthedifferentweatherandcolorswith thewords andlistened toMrs. JoanneBok asthey readbooksbyDr.Seuss.

Whenaskedabouttheirfavoritethingstodoin school,they allshouted outtogether, “Playingwith plasticdiamonds!Playwithtransformercards! Cooking!”

Abundantrecess timesand classeswith alot of playtimeallowedforamoreflexiblelearning experiencewheretheynotonlyfocusedon studying,butgottoplayandhavefunwiththeir friends.

AsMrs.SarahJangteachescapitalletters, BenjaminBlacklock(P3)listensintently.P3 studentslearnedtositinchairsandlistento theteacherwithoutgettingdistracted.

Lookingupattheboard,LisaChen(P4)watches asMrs.Bokrecordstheweatherfortheday.P3 andP4classeswererelativelysmallandallowed formoreintimaterelationshipsbetweenthe teachersandthestudents.

Thisincluded“coloring,painting,andsnipping” whichwereSafiyyahAmbrose’s(P3)favoritethings todoatschool.Bondingthroughplaytime,they learnedhowtomakefriendshipswiththeirpeers.

Inlessons,teachersaimedtoincorporate Christianworldviewsintheirclassroomsfromas earlyasP3.

RepeatingafterMrs.AdelynHamilton,studentsin herclasssang,“I’msospecial,becauseGodmade me,hemademeamazing, andwonderfulandI’mso specialbecauseI’mmadebyGod.”Withmostof themclaimingBibleastheirfavoritesubject,the classhaspositivelyinfluencedthemtofostera Christianmindsetfromearlyon.

Energygoneafteralong dayofworkandplay, the kidswerepassedontothecomfortingcareoftheir parentsand guardians.Taking allthat they’dlearned, whethersomethingbigorsmall,theytooksmall stepsintheirlearningeverydayandmadeprogress ineducationforlife.

Happyandfree

Children zipped around the playground, bouncing up and down like littleballs ofenergy. Thesestudents hadslides, tunnels,and climbing areasat theirdisposal, andthey werenot afraidto makeuse ofthem. Somewouldplaygamesoftagwithoneanother,pursuingone anotheralloverthearea.Otherslatchedthemselvesontobarsand swungthemselvesaround,muchtotheamusementoftheother children.Theywerehavingfun,asshownbytheirgleefuland contagioussmiles.

“I like PE becauseit helps me get faster and stronger,” said Joshua Joo(1).

Inclass,thesestudentsengagedinfunactivitiessuchasartsand crafts,drawing,singing,andothersuchthings.Studentsoftensatin circlesasadultsapproachedtoassistthemwithwhateverthey needed.Childrencutoutsmallshapesfrompiecesofpaperand gluedthemtogether,tomakesomethinggreater.

“Art,becauseIliketodraw,”saidJohnHa(2),whenaskedwhat hisfavoritesubjectswere.

Evenatanearlyage,thesechildrenwerealreadybeginningto developtheirinterestsinvariousschoolsubjects.

ForEnglish,childrensatinfrontofprojectionscreensand whiteboardstolearnaboutpronunciation.Theywerepresentedwith variousformsofphonics,learningtopronounceandtoarticulate themselvesproperly.Childreneagerlyraisedtheirhandsto participatewhentheyknewtheanswer.

Theimaginationsofthesechildrenweren’tjustlimitedtotheir schoolwork,but alsowent beyondthat. Manyhad aspirationsof what theywantedtobewhentheygrewup.

Childrenalsoappliedtheircreativeskillswhenitcametotheir personalhobbiesathome.

IT'S ELEMENTARY , MY DEAR WATSON

Fewstagesoflifeencapsulatethegoldenyearsof childhoodquitelikethirdandfourthgrade.Tothese youngstudents,thevastschoolcampuscanseemboth excitingandintimidating;somuchtodoandsolittletime todoit.

Theseblissful benefitsof youthdid notgo unnoticedby someelementaryschoolersastheyobservedtheir middleschoolupperclassmen.“Thebestthingabout elementaryschoolatDalatisthatitwon'tbeashardas middleschoolbecausewedon’thaveasmuchtestsand homework,”CarolTeh(4)pointedout.

Eagle Island, the crown jewel of elementary and middle schoolrecreation, stoodout inthe accountsof manythird andfourthgradersrecitingtheirrecessroutines.“Onthe parallelbarsat EagleIsland,I doalot ofgymnasticskind ofstuffandonthegrass,Idofrontwalkoversand cartwheels,”saidYunhaWie(3)withpride.

Futurephysicists,likeYuXinQuah(4), commentedthattheir“favoritesubjectis sciencebecause[they]learnedabout electricityandbatteries,”while mathematiciansinthemaking,likeJayden Choi(4),noted,“Sometimeswehaveword problems, and it can be about us and Mr. [Rob] Wong.”

Thebreadthofdifferentclassesundertakeninfifth andsixthgradeclassroomsensuredthatstudents, agedtentotwelve, allhadasubject rightuptheiralley tolookforwardtothroughouttheyear.

Mathclassespromotedthemasteryofalgebraic, geometric,andstatisticalconceptsaswellastheir real-worldapplications.“Ilikemathbecauseitisreally goodtouseinlifeskills,likehowtouseyourmoney well,”explainedHudsonYost(5).

“Myfavorite subjectis sciencebecause wehave the mostfunthere,especiallywhenwesetthingsonfire,” said Nicholas Lim (6). In this class, students developed inquisitivespiritsandemployedanalyticalmethodsas theyexploredtheworldsofecology,astronomy, physics,andchemistry.

Middleschoolersinsocialstudiesclasses discoveredpatterns anddifferences betweensocieties andculturesaroundtheworldthroughhistory.“It’s interestingbecausewegettolearnaboutdifferent placesandancientcivilizations,”remarkedSarah Wood(6).

“Wegettoplaybadminton,andwedon’thavetodo drills,”commentedAaronFan(6)abouthisPEclass, inwhichboysandgirlslearnedtheimportanceof healthandhonedphysicalskillsthroughparticipation invarioussportsandactivities.

Asthehighschoollifecamecloserandcloser, the7th and8th graderslooked forwardto finishing theirmiddleschoolyearsstrong.MiddleSchool aimedtopreparethemfortheirlateryearsby havingthemtakecoresubjectssuchasEnglish, mathematics,history,science,andavarietyof electiveslikeBand, Art,Engineering,Ed-Tech and PEthatspurrednewinterestandtalents.

Oneofthepopularpickswhenaskedabout theirfavoritesubjectswasscience.MarcusLee (7)claimed,“Myfavoritesubjectisscience because[Mrs.SharonBernhardt]isveryfun."The teachersoftencontributedtotheenjoymentofthe classesandswayedopinionsdramatically.

Withlabs andexperiments, theydove deepinto scientifictopicslikebiologyandecology."Wedo labswhere[theteacher]givesusscenarios.For example,there isan animalin arainforest, andwe havetofigureout howchangingsomething(in the rainforest)affectstheanimal,"Leeexplained. Otherprojects includedwriting newsarticles about naturaldisasters.Theyhadthechancetopick topicsfromtsunamis,earthquakes,hurricanes, andvolcaniceruptionsandincludethespecific vocabforeachtopicsuchaswhereandwhenit happened.

InLanguageArts,theyfurtherimprovedtheir Englishskillsbymemorizingvocabularywords, learninggrammar,readingbooks,anddoing worksheetsthattestedtheirknowledgeaboutthe bookstheyread.

EthanScharfe(7)said,"MyfavoritesubjectisArt becausewearedoingperspectivesanditreally makesthepicturerealistic.Theotherstudentsare reallyfriendly.”Coursesinmiddleschoolplanted fundamentalskillsintheirsubjectsthatlaterhelped inhighschoolAdvancedPlacementclasseswhere thebasicsreallycameintoplay.

Usinghiscreativityandthethingshelearnedin Ed-Tech,GyeomKwak(8)describedoneofhis favoriteprojects:“Itwasaprojectaboutmakinga game. I made a simple game about basketball. When Iwasmakingthat,IfeltkindofproudthatIwas makingsomethingonmyown.”Oftentimes,projects helpedvisualizehowfartheyhadcomeintheclass andgaveasenseofsatisfactionastheygainednew skills.

Withtheendoftheirmiddleschoolyearsright around the corner, they applied all that they’d learned in class to their projects and aimed to finish on a high.

AlthoughEnglishclasswasarequirementfor students,thisdidn’tstopthemfromgoingfurther andbeyondwhatwasnecessary,becausethe Englishlanguagewasanopportunityforthemto createsomethingthattheycaredabout.Many studentspickedtheirrespectiveEnglishclass becausetheyenjoyedsomethinginthatclassthat otherclassesdidnotoffer.

“MyEnglish classesare BritLit andWorld Litthis year.Ichosethembecausetheyseemed interestingandfun,”saidSophiaKang(12).

Tobeginthe year,studentsin AP Literaturewere taskedwithwritingessayseveryweekregarding twobooksthattheyhadreadoverthesummer.In APLit,studentsreadbooksthatenabledthemto expandtheirworldviewandknowledgeregarding thingstheydidnotnormallythinkabout.

AlljuniorshadthechancetoworkintheJuniorClassStore, enablingthemtohandlefinancesandbasicresponsibilitiessuchas order-taking.Inadditiontosweetandsavorysnacks,theStorealso frequentlyaddedneweritemstoonspecialoccasions.Theyhosted bakesales,too,servingtreatssuchassnickerdoodlesandOreo truffles.“Ienjoyedswiftlygrabbingacanneddrinkfromthefridgeor cuttingafreezeveryquickly.IparticularlyrememberwhenImadea verysoft-servecone,”saidLeiTee(11)

Forthewholehighschool,theEagleGamesgavestudentsa chancetocompetewithoneanotherinfungamesthatemphasize cooperationandteamwork.Thehighschoolwasdividedintofour teams:Blaze,Bolt,Quake,andWave. Bondinganddevelopmentcameinmanydifferentways;during onlineschool,ExCommembersorganizedandhostedclassactivities online.

Yong-YuHuang(12),presidentoftheseniorclass,said,“[I’m]just tryingtoreachouttovariouspeople,evenifit’sjustforaquickchat. Also,we’rerunningvirtualgamenightsandotheractivities.”

Concerningtheprosandconsofbecomingaclassleader,most ExCommemberssaidthattheyenjoyedfuntimeswhilststeppingout oftheircomfortzone,althoughtheirresponsibilitiescouldbestressful attimes.LivGohan(9),memberofthefreshmanExCom,said, “BeinginExComisaneye-openingexperienceasworkingalongside myclassmateswhomI'munfamiliarwithhelpsmeunderstand differentperspectives.”

Aspertradition,theEasterbaptismservicewasheldatthebeach, andthosewhowantedtobebaptizedwereinvitedtosignuptobe baptizedintheoceanrightbytheschool.Theservicestartedinthe VintageChapel,whereMr.CraigRoylanceledafewworshipsongs andtheneachofthetenpeoplewhoweretobebaptizedshareda littletestimony.Followingthatwasthebaptismintheocean.Aseach personcameup,thoseontheshoreclappedtocelebrate.

ChapelswereheldeveryFridayatHarborHall.Thisoffered studentstheopportunitytoworship,anditgavestudentstheperfect excusetotaketimeoutoftheirdaytoworshipGod.

Additionally,thefirstsemesterhostedSEW,orSpiritEmphasis Week,whilethesecondsemesterhadMEW,orMissionEmphasis Week.Bothtookthreedaystofocusonandteachstudentshowto listentotheHolySpiritandhowtoliveamissionarylifeaswellas howtoloveservingGodtothebestoftheirabilitiesrespectively. GuestspeakerswereinvitedtospeakduringtheChapelsessions.

Studentswhowantedguidance,gottheirchancewiththe mentorshipprogramthatwasofferedtoeveryoneinhighschooland middleschool.Thiscouldbedoneeitherindividuallyorasagroup, withateacherorwithSeniors.Theywouldthensetuptime,dayand locationtomeetup,usuallyweekly.Thisofferedthechancefor youngerstudentstogetadifferentperspectiveonthings.

"Ilikedoingmentoringbecauseithelpsbothsidestounderstand differentlifeexperiencesanddifferentpointsofviewsgainedfrom thoselifeexperiences.Italsoallowsgettingadviceduringtimesof trouble.Mentoringisnotjustsomethingthat'sone-sidedbutatwo wayfoldtoo.Thereisnomentorandmentored;bothareequals beingmentorsandbeingtheonementored,despitetherebeingan olderoneandayoungerone,"saidTianXiangHwang(11).

“IhavejoinedvolleyballandsoccerIntramuralsthisyear,”said OnyouKim(9).“IjoinedbecauseIwantedtotakeabreakfromtests andhomework,theacademicstuff,youknow?Also,Ilovesports,so whenthesign-upscameout,Iimmediatelysignedup.”

Unfortunately,theMOEshutdownintramuralsportsforarounda month,andsomestudentslostchancestoparticipate.Thankfully, thatdidn’tstopthemfromappreciatingtheexperience,especially whenpermissiontoplayreturnedafewweekslater.

Intramuralsbeganagainafterspringbreak.Regardless,students couldstillsignupformoresportyactivitiesduringX-Block,like Crossfit,touchrugby,tennis,pickleball,andbadminton.
