India Scientists Use Vietnamese Rice Plant to Develop Blast-Resistant Rice Variety Sep 23, 2013 Scientists in India’s Directorate of Rice Research (DRR) have used a resistant gene (Pi-54) found in Vietnamese rice variety (Tetep) to develop rice varieties that are naturally resistant to the blast disease which affects rice plants across the world.Scientists say that they have successfully introduced the blast resistant gene in popular rice varieties grown in India, and this could benefit millions of farmers in future. The new variety is likely to be available for commercial cultivation in the next Kharif season starting June 2014.Scientists at the DRR are also working on decoding the genes responsible for aroma in basmati rice, according to local sources. India Forecast to Remain World’s Largest Rice Exporter in 2014

Sep 23, 2013

India is expected to remain the world’s largest rice exporter for the third consecutive year in calendar year 2014 based on adequate supplies and continued demand in Iran, the USDA says in its latest report.India exported around 10.25 million tons in 2012, ahead of the previous leader Thailand, which exported about 6.94 million tons of rice, and Vietnam which exported about 7.7 million tons of rice in the year. India’s rice exports in 2013 were earlier forecast at around 9.7 million tons, but the USDA raised it by around 3% or 300,000 tons to about 10 million tons based on strong sales to Iran. In its September 2013 report, the USDA also increased India’s rice export forecast for 2014 to around 9.3 million tons, up about 3.3% from around 9 million tons forecast in August 2013. The USDA says that India will
