Dade Heritage Trust’s Student and Teacher Art and Photo Contest Exhibition March 10-31 HistoryMiami, 101 W. Flagler St., Miami Dade Heritage Trust, Miami-Dade Public Schools and HistoryMiami have partnered to sponsor an exhibition of student and teacher artwork inspired by Miami Mid-Century and other historic architectural traditions. The exhibition runs from March 10th through March 31st . On display will be the entries for the second annual Dade Heritage Days Student and Teacher Art and Photo Contest, depicting Miami’s historic landmarks. Monday closed, Tuesday - Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. Museum admission: Adults $8, Seniors and Students $7, Children (6-12) $5, Children under 6 Free. Contemporary Arts Project (CAP) March-April Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, 3251 S. Miami Ave, Miami From sculptor Alexander Stirling Calder, who created the striking figures that adorn the barge, to painters John Singer Sargent and Gari Melchers, who were extended house guests of James Deering’s, Vizcaya has been a source of inspiration to artists since its very inception. Through the Contemporary Arts Project (CAP), Vizcaya continues Deering’s patronage by reaching out to the artistic community—both locally and nationally—to offer artists the opportunity to explore our resources and interpret them in new ways. Each year two artists are invited by an advisory committee to immerse themselves in Vizcaya’s grounds and collections and create work in response to that experience. Biscayne Boulevard Tour Sponsored by MiMo Biscayne Association March 4, 6, 12 & 13, 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 5, 2:00 p.m. Vagabound Motel, 7391 Biscayne Blvd., Miami The 30-40 minute walking tour begins at the Vagabond Motel, 7301 Biscayne Boulevard, starting with the story of the Coppertone sign and an explanation of Art Deco and Mid-century Modern architectural styles illustrated with examples of hotels, motels, commercial buildings and apartments in both styles. The walk passes by buildings by Robert Swartburg, Igor Polevitzky, Norman Giller and Joseph J. de Britta, including his home and studio from 1938 through the early 50’s. Tour concludes at the riverside terrace of the Red Light restaurant at Motel Blu (formerly Gold Dust) for a 20 minute lecture on the Hugh Heffner and Miami’s Playboy Club along with a brief presentation on 1950’s songstress Roberta Sherwood, a local resident. Archetype Vizcaya: A Commission by Ernesto Oroza March 4 – May 1, 2011 Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, 3251 S. Miami Ave, Miami Experience the highly anticipated return of CAP with Archetype Vizcaya by interdisciplinary artist and designer, Ernesto Oroza. The artist’s project for CAP provides Vizcaya’s visitors with a new tool to explore the Main House: a map of normally invisible things that reflects the artist’s perspective on

The maps are meant to be taken home and used as decorative elements or in any way visitors may choose: an idea of Vizcaya to take home and play with. Untitled A Performance by Naomi Fisher Wednesday, April 13, 2011 6:30 p.m., Gardens Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, 3251 S. Miami Ave. Naomi Fisher is a multimedia artist who recurrently explores nature and humankind’s desire to tame it through a combination of live performances, photographs, watercolors and works on paper. Naomi Fisher’s Untitled weaves her personal childhood memories of Vizcaya with fictional narratives in a performance with a group of actors. The public performance will be filmed and developed into a video piece along with photographs and paintings for her upcoming Contemporary Arts Project at Vizcaya.
