GOOD LUCK AT NATIONALS! Some words that bear repeating from Sharon McDonald, commenting on a recent DCA National Specialty:

If “success” were measured by rosettes, it appears we had a great DCA Nationals. We did. I’m proud of my dogs. Interestingly, it’s the immeasureable and nonphotographical things that seem to be most important. I’m speaking of the smiles and kind words when my dogs did well. The kind words and smiles when my dogs didn’t do well. I’m speaking of being in the conformation ring, insecure and wondering “what the hell was I thinking entering this?” Then that highly respected mini longhair person says “That’s a really nice bitch you have... I don’t say it unless I mean it.” ... And others affirm “She doesn’t!” It’s mentors saying an unsolicited “I’m proud of you”. It’s meeting people I previously only knew through Facebook - and of course meeting their dogs! And then of course, it’s seeing friends and cheering for them when it’s their turn on the rabbit, their run on the agility course, their daring go in an obedience or rally ring, and their glorious time in the spotlight in the conformation ring. Precious and priceless. Honestly, coming home from Breed Nationals with ribbons and winnings is awesome. The fact is, however, that no one comes home empty handed. There’s always some special thing to treasure! (image on cover courtesy of Pinterest)

Urban Ratting Update by Trudy Kawami

Page

18

Some time ago I wrote about rat hunting in New York City, and how the rat carcasses were being used in a scientific study of New York’s rats being conducted at Fordham University by Matthew Combs. The first study in the project is now published – in the journal Molecular Ecology for 2017 - and I thought DCA Newsletter readers might want to know the results. The reason why rats are so successful is, like real estate, location, location, location. Habitat availability – food and cover - is the key. Rats are commensals, that is animal that live with humans.

I am very thankful to DCA for sponsoring Laura Potash and I in the creation of this year’s Meet the Breeds Booth in Orlando, Florida. For many years I have attended the show but felt that our breed was seriously under-represented in the Meet the Breeds area, but wasn’t sure what to do about it. Realizing that initiating change would be a massive undertaking, I spoke with fellow DCA member Laura Potash and asked for her assistance.

by Karen R. Scheiner Effective May 1, 2018, the new obedience rules for Open and Novice classes become effective. Now there are three different positions to teach your dog. What’s more, two of them must be performed, respectively, at distances of 15 feet and then 30 feet from the handler. Not only that, but the dog must not move out of any of those positions, until the handler – who ends up at the other side of the ring – gives another signal to “stay” and then returns to heel position.Although the new rules will improve safety and security for dogs in obedience, particularly small dogs, this does not come without a price to pay.

Kelly’s Story: My human mama and daddy tell me I am very special in their hearts because I survived against all odds. They were so glad I was alive that they didn’t care whether I would be a show dog or not. My dog mama (Maidgey) was bred to Pilot. Everybody was so excited over this breeding and then something awful happened. My mama contracted a terrible virus and aborted what was thought the whole litter. She was bleeding, passing clots in the doctor’s office and my humans were crying a lot over her as a text came in reporting my daddy had won Variety at Westminster. She recovered and my doctor wanted to see an ultrasound after a few weeks. I showed up in the picture and everyone was happy. I was born without any problems on April Fool’s Day. Then something awful happened again, my daddy, Pilot, died suddenly at a very young age. I became even more special because I am his only offspring and I use this to my advantage, I love to tear up things so much that I’m not sure if my name is “Kelly” or “No”. I am beginning to do well in the show ring and continue to tear up anything I can get my mouth on. My first major was awarded by Judge Robert Schwalbe and my second major in a Florida specialty show by Judge Carol Ann Klein. Then the next day I found myself standing beside my daddy’s sister, Aunt Mymy (GCH Brownwood MyMy Diagram SS) at the AKC National Championship. She was Best of Variety and I was Best of Winners under Judge Robert Stein. I hope I made my daddy proud as it seemed as though his spirit was with us. We would like to say a special THANK YOU to Jerry Cerasini, Roger Brown, and Dianne Graham for allowing us to breed to their beautiful Pilot.

THE DACHSHUND CLUB OF AMERICA, INC. BOARD MEETING Saturday October 14, 2017 Columbus, OH The meeting opened at 7:50 a.m. In attendance: Carl Holder, Fran Colonna, Bob Wlodkowski, Vicki Spencer, Cheryl Shultz, Paul Martin, Connie Fisher, Dan Burke, Kathy Lockyer, Deneice Van Hook, Anne Carson, Georjan Bridger, Walt Jones, and Larry Sorenson Absent: Brian Owen, Ken Levison, Ken Hagmueller, Cyndy Senff, Charlotte Borghardt Guests present: Cindy Niles, Denise Siemssen, Patsy Leonberger, Debby Kreig, Dave Temple and Victor John

PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Carl welcomed our guests. This being Anne Carson’s last meeting as a board member, Carl thanked her for her years of service. He reported Purina had signed a contract to sponsor the DCA 2019 Nationals. The following candidates were declared elected for 2017: President: Carl Holder 1st Vice President: Walter Jones 2nd Vice President: Frances Colonna Recording Secretary: Vicki Spencer Corresponding Secretary: Cheryl Shultz Treasurer: Kenneth Levison Class of 2020 Directors: Denise Siemssen, Cindy Niles, Michael Pitisci, Sandy Arnold Carl reported the breed standard amendment had been adopted by the DCA membership on September 20, 2017. The ballots were tabulated by Mary Holub, Chairman of Tellers, Secretary, Christopher Registered Parliamentary Unit. Her written report showed 510 ballots cast. Three were deemed illegal and one was rejected. 340 “For” votes were needed for the amendment to be adopted. 374 “for” votes were cast and 132 “against” votes were recorded. Carl explained the proposed breed standard amendment had been sent to AKC along with the results of the voting. We are now waiting for AKC to inform us of the date the amendment will take effect.

RECORDING SECRETARY: Vicki Spencer The Board ratified the approval of the 1/07/17 Minutes Motion was made and passed to accept the May 27, 2017 minutes. Names of Motion Makers – Vicki reported when she became recording secretary she was instructed not to publish the names of the people making a motion. Looking through archives she found this procedure changed in 2007. Before March 2007 the names of motions makers were recorded. At the March 2007 Board meeting some of the names of motion makers, but not all, were recorded. In the September 10, 2007 minutes, the names of motion makers were not recorded, and it has been that way since. She was not able to locate in any of the minutes whether this was a Board

6

Dachshund Club of America Spring 2018

decision or a Membership decision. She reported this is the one thing she is asked about the most and would like the procedure clarified at this meeting. Carl explained the maker of a motion is irrelevant since the person is only needed to get a discussion on the subject going. Once a motion has been accepted, it belongs to the whole Board. A motion was made and passed to continue not recording the name of the person presenting a motion.

Hemangiosarcoma Research: AKC Match Initiative In 2018, the AKC will generously match all donations made in support of canine hemangiosarcoma research, up to $250,000. What is Hemangiosarcoma? An aggressive and common cancer in dogs. While the cause of the disease is unknown, certain breeds (Golden Retriever, Portuguese Water Dog, Boxer, German Shepherd Dog) are considered to be high-risk. This suggests that heritable traits, while not singularly responsible, may contribute to the disease. Hemangiosarcoma can develop in any tissue or organ, but the most common primary sites for these tumors include spleen, right atrium of the heart, and the skin.

8

Dachshund Club of America Spring 2018

Why study it? While cutaneous masses (affecting the skin) are often treatable by tumor excision, tumors affecting internal organs are associated with poorer prognosis and are almost always incurable. Hemangiosarcoma is often called the “silent killer”, because the tumors are often not detected until the later stages of the disease, and even dogs harboring large tumors may show no clinical signs or evidence that they have a life threatening disease. Because treatments have not improved the overall survival times for dogs with this disease, tremendous efforts are being made through research funded by the CHF and its donors to gain a better understanding of the biology and progression of this disease with the goal to design new and effective approaches to treatment.

AKC Canine Health Foundation National Parent Club Canine Health Conference Published December 2017 Sharing Discoveries Monitoring the pulse of a breed’s health and well-being is one of the chief concerns of its national parent club. The monumental task involves tracking heritable diseases while simultaneously unifying breeders and owners to help fund -raise and gather DNA samples to support research. The sometimes overwhelming educational effort entails spreading the word about painful, possibly fatal canine diseases and encouraging breeders to talk openly about them. Bringing together parent club health representatives and some of the top researchers of canine health and genetic diseases, the 11th biennial AKC (American Kennel Club) Canine Health Foundation National Parent Club Canine Health Conference was held last August in St. Louis, home of Purina, the conference sponsor. Here are highlights from some of the talks presented — and links to their funded research — at this premier forum on canine health and genetics slanted to dog breeders and enthusiasts. B-Cell Lymphoma & Golden Retrievers Learning more about the epigenetic DNA methylation changes that occur in Golden Retrievers with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma may provide insights that one day will help affected dogs. Epigenetic changes, due to factors such as age, environment, heritability, and lifestyle, affect gene expression without actually changing the DNA sequence. The unique DNA methylation signature of B-cell lymphoma potentially will allow for the development of biomarkers to help detect Goldens at risk for lymphoma. Jeffrey Bryan, DVM, PhD, DACVIM, associate professor of veterinary oncology and director of the Comparative Oncology and Epigenetics Laboratory at the University of Missouri, says these methylation changes occur early in the cancer formation process. The possibility of developing effective medicine or dietary therapeutics could become a reality with improved diagnostic and prognostic capabilities. Go to the study online: http://bit.ly/2yFFNJZ One in eight Golden Retrievers develops lymphoma cancer, of which one-third of cases are diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. Aging Effects of Stud Dog Semen Aided by artificial insemination and the use of chilled and frozen semen, dog breeding today is far more convenient than years ago when bitches had to travel across the country to be bred to prominent stud dogs. An unknown factor is the effect of aging on the viability of semen. In

the first comprehensive study to evaluate canine semen, Stuart Meyers, DVM, PhD, DACT, professor of anatomy, physiology and cell biology at the University of California-Davis, is taking an epidemiological approach as he develops a database tracking the relationship of sperm characteristics and male age to pregnancy. The database is being built based on a study that followed a large group of breeding male Labrador Retrievers at Guide Dogs for the Blind in San Rafael, California. Early studies have shown a decline in sperm morphology, including velocity, or the speed at which sperm travels, when males are around 9 to 10 years of age, yet litter size does not vary providing the semen is good quality. This study is expected to provide valuable insights to help estimate a stud dog’s breeding soundness. Go to the study online: http://bit.ly/2zEfbJx “Sperm quality and infertility are two different things, and as stud dogs age, both decline due to cellular senescence in which cell division within the testicle slows down and eventually stops.” • Stuart Meyers, DVM, PhD, DACT, professor of anatomy, physiology and cell biology at the University of California-Davis The Gut Microbiota & Epilepsy The complex communication signaling that occurs between the GI (gastrointestinal) tract and nervous system may help explain the breakdown that causes some epileptic dogs to be resistant to anticonvulsant medications. Karen Muñana, DVM, MS, DACVIM, professor of neurology at NC State College of Veterinary Medicine, aims to better understand the mechanisms behind this drug-resistance process. Dr. Muñana is focusing on how a reduction of the intestinal bacteria Lactobacillus, which produces an important brain-signaling chemical known as GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), might impact drug-resistant epilepsy. Her study involves evaluating stool samples from 15 pairs of housemate dogs in which one is epileptic, though not receiving anti-seizure medications, and the other is not epileptic to learn more about the intricacies of the microbiota-gut-brain axis. Potentially, giving an epileptic dog Lactobacillus microbes orally may one day have a beneficial therapeutic effect. Go to the study online: http://bit.ly/2hPCZzy Epilepsy is the most common nervous system disorder in dogs, and about one-third of epileptic dogs are resistant to seizure medications. Donations to this initiative in 2017 will be matched up to $250,000 by the AKC. To donate, visit: http://bit.ly/2ydJ3bl A Focus on Lyme Disease The clock is ticking for dogs, and people, too, when bitten by a blacklegged tick (lxodes scapularis or lxodes pacificus) infected with the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi that causes Lyme disease, the most common vector-borne disease in the U.S. In only 24 to 48 hours, a tick can transmit Lyme. One of the most challenging tickborne diseases, Lyme is hard to detect because dogs rarely show signs and the poppy-seed size

of the nymph form of the tick is virtually impossible to recognize and thus remove before an infection occurs. As the Lyme-endemic areas of the U.S., and now Canada, spread, the gaps in knowledge about the disease warrant a closer look. Jason Stull, VMD, PhD, DACVPM, assistant professor at The Ohio State University, is looking at healthy dogs to learn what percent test positive for Lyme, and of those, what percent later develop the disease. STRESS, INFERTILITY AND HERPES INFECTION Mary C. Wakeman, D.V.M. Ashford Animal Clinic Canine Fertility Center Ashford, CT

Our most frequent discussions about Herpes in dogs occur because of neonatal puppy death. Herpes causes puppies to die in the first two to three weeks of life, when puppies cannot regulate their body temperature. After three weeks of age the puppies acquire the ability to regulate their body temperature, and to mount a fever response. At that time, the disease no longer causes death, but can cause a respiratory disease. We rarely find much in references about this disease in the adult dog. Where it is mentioned, continued on next page... Dachshund Club of America Spring 2018

9

HERPES continued from page 9 it is generally in regard to future breeding advisability for a bitch that has produced a litter of puppies that had herpes, or regarding the presence of vesicles (blister like lesions) on the vulva or prepuce. Recent papers published by Dr. James Everman of Washington State University, have demonstrated that the disease as we know it in dogs is very similar to the equivalent disease in horses (Rhino). This information fills in the remainder of the picture for dogs in a very dramatic fashion. Those of us who have owned horses are likely to be familiar with the equivalent Herpes virus infection in horses, a disease called Rhino (Rhinopneumonitis). Rhino in horses is characterized by a mild respiratory disease in most cases, and by abortion in pregnant mares. In the respiratory form of the disease, the horses have a clear nasal discharge, may snort or cough, and have reduced exercise tolerance. It is a mild condition, and unless the horse is being actively used or campaigned, or is pregnant, it is rarely vaccinated against. The vaccine, somewhat like the common cold virus, does not give a good duration of immunity, and if protection from Rhino is desired, it has been necessary to vaccinate every 4 months. Rhino in horses also causes abortion. On breeding farms, an epidemic of Rhino will cause what is called an “abortion storm” in brood-mares. That frightening phrase says it all. Rhino is highly contagious, spread through the air by aerosols or contact with secretions. The fact that Herpes virus infection in dogs has been given such little attention by veterinarians, when its effects might well have anticipated by reproductive experts, serves as an excellent demonstration of the historical lack of interest in canine reproduction by the Veterinary establishment in general. The respiratory form of Herpes infection in adult dogs is minimal in its signs. It is, however, extremely important in the transmission of the disease. It is not necessary for dogs to acquire Herpes as a venereal disease. A dog may acquire Herpes as an airborne aerosol, or from aerosols on your clothing, for instance, and abort or resorb a litter. I have personally heard of only two cases of adult dogs that were sneezing, in the manner of a human with a cold. Any dog may sneeze once or twice in response to inhaling an irritant. But sneezing consistently, over a protracted period, is extremely rare. One instance of frank sneezing occurred in 6 week old puppies, who were housed near another litter in the same household. This litter was 3.5 weeks older than the younger litter. The older litter had Herpes in the respiratory form with sneezing and clear nasal secretions at 5 to 6 weeks, while the younger ones, under 3 weeks of age, had suffered a 50% mortality and were confirmed as having Herpes on post mortem examination. The older puppies who were affected only with the sneezing were able to regulate their body temperature. Puppies die of Herpes only so

10

Dachshund Club of America Spring 2018

long as they are unable to mount a fever response. Between 2 and 3 weeks puppies develop the ability to control their temperature. Earlier they are dependant on their surroundings for warmth – this is called poikilothermia. Treatment of young puppies where herpes has been diagnosed by a postmortem exam of one of the dead puppies involves elevating the temperature of the surroundings. Check with your veterinarian if you think this may be the problem in your litter under three weeks of age. Refrigerate (do not freeze) dead puppies so they can be taken in for post mortem examination. As Herpes is a virus, there is no particular reason for administering antibiotics, unless a secondary bacterial infections occurs. If there is uncertainty as to whether Herpes or a neonatal bacterial infection is causing puppy death, antibiotics are appropriate. A cervical culture and sensitivity of the bitch prior to whelping to determine the presence of E. coli will provide help in making this decision, since E.coli also causes neonatal death. Litter loss can occur at any point of the pregnancy. Puppies may be resorbed or born dead, or they may acquire Herpes virus as they pass through the vaginal canal at birth (along with E.coli bacteria), in utero prior to birth, or by contact with infective secretions (respiratory aerosols or vaginal discharges) after birth. Bitches infected with Herpes prior to breeding or from exposure at the time of breeding simply never show as pregnant. The best way of preventing gestational loss or neonatal death is to quarantine the dam from 3 weeks prior to breeding to 3 weeks after whelping. To determine if a bitch has been freshly exposed to Herpes during gestation, and has not whelped for that reason, 2 serum samples, taken 2 weeks apart, are submitted to a lab for a Herpes titer. A changing titer (either rising or falling) indicates that Herpes infection may have caused the loss of a litter in gestation. Herpes infection of the dam which does not result in abortion may result in low birth weight, weak or stillborn puppies. If there are surviving

puppies in a Herpes litter, they may or may not have permanent damage to the nervous system, kidney, or lymphoid tissue, much in the way that puppy strangles may damage internal organs and cause problems later in life. Once we have experienced Herpes in a litter of neonates, we are critically interested in whether or not we are likely to experience a repeat occurrence if we breed the dam again. We are also interested in whether the stud dog must be infected. Herpes in adult dogs tends to go dormant, as it does in humans, and to resurface and become acute in times of stress. Consider the stresses in play for the bitch being bred: * Hormonal events which temporarily impair the body’s ability to fight infection. * Shipping, boarding, breeding and shipping again, should the bitch travel to the stud dog. * Possible concurrent bacterial vaginal or uterine disease. * In appropriate parts of the country, concurrent lyme disease. * Showing. * In the bitch or 5 years or older, decreased thyroid levels. * Any other stresses, such as temperature stress. Knowing that stress may activate Herpes, (which may then in 3 weeks cause early embryonic death) goes a very long way toward explaining those bitches we have been so certain were bred up to the fourth week, but failed to whelp at term, or that whelped a much smaller than anticipated litter. Where we have done thorough pre-breeding workups and have palpated normal vesicles in a bitch at 28 days of gestation, yet no puppies were delivered, we test for Herpes with paired serum samples taken 2 weeks apart, at about the time the bitch should have whelped. Where the bitch was in good health and clean of bacterial vaginal or uterine disease originally, had normal vesicles and later lost her litter, we continued on page 14...

DCA BOARD MINUTES continued from page 6 addressed before the next meeting, she suggested there be time set aside for discussion before voting takes place, and before any voting takes place, a motion needs to be made. Carl will send out a procedure on how to do business via email that Board members will follow. Corresponding Secretary: Cheryl Shultz emailed Board members a list of correspondence she had received dated 5/22/17 to 10/02/17. She reported receiving 7 pieces of correspondence that need Board attention. 6-14-17 An email request from Drs. Stephen Cai & Rebecka Hess, University of Pennsylvania, requested our club’s assistance with a study & survey on canine diabetes. Cheryl forwarded the correspondence to Dan Burke, Denny Van Hook & Charlotte Borghardt. Cheryl reported that Charlotte has agreed to place an article in the newsletter explaining what is needed. 6-30-17 A letter was received from AKC/Peter Piusz, AKC’s Parent Club Committee, asking for a revised health statement from our club in a specified format and approved by the DCA Board of Directors for publication on the AKC website. Larry will call Peter Piusz to find out exactly what AKC wants from us. 7-25-17 A letter was received from AKC requesting two club contacts; one on breed characteristics and one on health issues and testing. Without objection Fran Colonna will be the DCA contact for breed characteristics and Doctors Dan Burke and Denny Van Hook will be our contacts for health issues and testing. 9-7-17 A letter was sent from AKC/Lisa Cecin requesting an update on our annual election of officers & directors. This has been submitted. 10-5-17 An email from AKC/Neil Singer announced candidates for the AKC Lifetime Achievement Award in conformation, companion & performance events. Motion was made and passed for Cheryl to cast a vote for Claudia Orlandi in the Conformation category, Patricia Krause in the Companion Events category, and A. Kenneth Engle in the Performance category. 10-4-17 An email from AKC/Peter Piusz called attention to what is listed online in the AKC Marketplace for our breed’s rescue. Current database shows Helen Hamilton. Under “Rescue Groups for DCA” Emma Jean Stephenson is listed. Cheryl has corrected this to reflect the current contacts. 10-4-17 A letter from AKC/Amy Hamernick invited our club to participate in Meet the Breeds in NYC on February 10, 2018. Since we do not have anyone who has volunteered to handle this, DCA will not participate. The meeting was adjourned at 12:00 for lunch and reconvened at 12:55.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Ken Levison had emailed financial reports to all Board members. There were no questions.

12

Dachshund Club of America Spring 2018

AKC DELEGATE’S REPORT: Larry Sorenson A motion was made and passed to update information for the Canine College on the AKC website. Without objection Vicki will be our liaison for the AKC Market Place. A motion was made and passed for Fran to update judge’s education to reflect the new breed standard information published on the Market Place site. Larry reported we are still waiting for AKC to give us an effective date for the breed standard amendment. As soon as it becomes effective, AKC will send out information in their judges’ monthly newsletter. A motion was made and passed that as soon as we receive the date it goes into effect, the DCA membership will be notified via the website, the DCA Newsletter and a postcard.

MEMBERSHIP APPLICATIONS: Georjan Bridger The Board went into Executive Session at 2:00 and reconvened at 2:15. The following applicants were voted into membership: Karen Osburn, Sheila Sumida, Helen Paradise, John Niles, Brenda Gardner, Victor John, Lindi Kershaw, Winona Elliott, and Samantha Elliott

STANDING COMMITTEES • Brochure Committee Recommendations: Vicki had emailed the Board members a list of available brochures DCA offers along with suggestions from Trudy Kawami as to what she would like seen done with them. Motion was made and passed to accept Trudy’s recommendations as follows: Reduce the price of the Breeder’s Notebook to $5.00 and discontinue once it is out of print. No longer offer “Breeding to Type”. Update Canine Intervertebral Disk Disease before reprinting. Place an insert in the remaining booklets directing the buyer to Dodgerlist. Offer “The Illustrated Standard of Points of the Dachshund of All Varieties” for free. Do not reprint once copies are gone. Mail out copies of the Versatility Certificate handbook with an insert directing the buyer to visit the website for the most up to date requirements. When the current supply is depleted, have it available on the website to download. Visualization of the Official Dachshund Standard will be updated to reflect the most current changes. It was suggested that Trudy may want to include a short description of each item offered on the website for people to have a better understanding as to what they are ordering.

SPECIAL COMMITTEES • DCA 2017: Wally Jones reported DCA 2017 made a profit of around $6,000.00. • DCA 2019: Motion was made and accepted to hold DCA 2019 at Purina Farms May 20 – 25th. Carl will check into hotel options and Denny will check with the St. Louis Dachshund Club to see if they will host some of the performance events.

She also felt they would be interested in holding a specialty. Georjan volunteered to do the All-In-One form.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: • PEC recommendations concerning Absolute –Vicki Spencer received a copy from Tracing Freeling, PEC Chair with the suggested wording for Absolute. Wording is as follows: Absolute is a competition held for the winners of all regular classes at an AKC licensed or member Dachshund field trial. It may be awarded at any field trial that offers both Open All Age and Field Champion stakes. The running procedure for Absolute shall be at the discretion of the field trial committee and shall be specified in the premium list. Bitches that are in season, as determined by the field trial committee, are ineligible for Absolute if there are any male class winners competing. Absolute may be withheld for lack of merit but not for lack of competition. The AKC criteria for eligibility to judge is defined in “Field Trial Rules and Standard Procedure for Dachshunds”, Chapter 5, and shall be applied to the selection of judges for Absolute. The judges for Absolute may either be advertised in the premium list or selected the day of the trial by the field trial committee. Motion was made and passed to accept the PEC recommendation concerning Absolute. Cheryl requested the minutes reflect that there are no “DCA Field Trial Rules”, not to be confused with the DCA Standing Rule describing Absolute. • DCA Hosting Guidelines: Georjan Bridger suggested the Ways and Means Chair oversee creating the logo used for DCA Nationals. Discussion followed. The Board recommended the Ways and Means chair be a resource to help the host club with the DCA National logo, if needed. • Update on pedigree research transition project: Cyndy Senff reported via email that Robert Grimes updated the databases (through May 2017 reports) on October 7th. She will check with the Boltons to see where they are in the process. She hopes to get with the programmer regarding mapping into the new software soon. • Required genetic testing of dachshunds: They noted it is vital that our members be educated about the diseases found in dachshunds. Drs. Denny Van Hook and Dan Burke led a brief discussion about the process of creating a recommended list of tests and/or examinations for breeders which would be pertinent and beneficial to the Dachshund breed. This is a process which is in the initial stages and will likely require a good deal of time to complete. Denny and Dan will continue to work on this project and report back to the board with recommendations as what DCA should recommend. Denny and Dan will put together information that will be published in the DCA Newsletter. continued on page 51...

HERPES continued from page 10 have found positive Herpes titers in about 80% of cases. This should be an extremely valuable piece of information for breeders, especially those who show regularly, have multiple animals in their kennel, who groom or run boarding kennels, or who give obedience lessons, and so on. Remember, this disease can literally be carried home on your clothing. What is the expectation for a bitch which has whelped a known Herpes litter (diagnosed by post mortem exam), or has been shown by titers to have lost a litter in gestation due to Herpes? If she is stressed by some of the factors above, she may be affected again. On the other hand, if she is bred at home or driven back and forth to the stud, given a complete pre-breeding medical workup, including thyroid testing, blood count, and cervical culture and sensitivity, and has any detrimental conditions cleared up, she is perfectly likely to have no problem. This also supposes that she is not traveled around during her gestation and taken to shows, that she is kept apart from those dogs coming into the kennel from outside and those traveling to shows, and so forth. It also includes not going to classes where there are other dogs as well. In a breed felt to be immunodeficient (Rottweilers, Dobermans, Boxers and possibly Pugs, Collies, and Shelties) the risk of a repeat occurrence will be greater. If stresses are avoided, most bitches have no problem in subsequent breedings. Nearly all dogs with any doggy contacts at all have been exposed to Herpes. It is not just or primarily a venereal disease. It is not usually or necessarily contracted through the breeding. It is usually contracted through exposure to the respiratory aerosols of other dogs. The very short-term immunity a new exposure may confer fades quickly, leaving the dog open to repeat infection as well as to dormant infections resurfacing. In fact, it would be very hard to say that any repeat of the infection came from a dormant infection instead of a new exposure to high levels of infective particles. Just going to the stud dog’s premises can be enough to expose the bitch; if there are frequent visiting bitches to the kennel, new infections may be brought with them. If the stud dog or his kennel mates are showing or training, he may be shedding high levels of particles. It is simply not possible to avoid this virus in the dog’s environment. But it is possible to limit that exposure; if going to the stud dog, don’t travel by air, and stay in a motel with the bitch rather than leaving her at the stud’s kennel. If going to a dog show, completely change clothes and wash before encountering any bred bitches at home. If training or showing kennel mates, isolate her from them and perform her “chores” before doing theirs, always going from “clean to dirty”. The most susceptible bitch of all, however, will be the one that lives in a pet home and has not had routine exposure to other dogs or the virus. Such a bitch upon being exposed to the

14

Dachshund Club of America Spring 2018

virus will be more seriously affected than a bitch with routine exposure to low levels of the virus. A stud dog bred to an infected bitch may or may not be infected, either as the animal which passed the infection to the bitch or as a recipient of an acute infection she was harboring when he

bred her. Herpes testing at the time of breeding is meaningless, since almost all individuals in the bitch’s environment may be in various phases of acquiring or recovering from infection. It bears repeating here, that the respiratory infection is very mild and rarely ever shows actual clinical signs in adult dogs. Only paired serum samples taken at different times to detect a rising (becoming infected ) titer, or a falling (recovering from an infection) titer, can tell us anything. Obviously the information generated in this way will be too late to be of use at the time of breeding. The usefulness of these paired titers is seen chiefly as a tool to identify if a bitch has lost her litter due to Herpes after the fact. We can rule Herpes in or out as one of the several options for causes of litter resorption, or still born or sickly neonates. The best rule to follow is that a kennel with an active show schedule, a stud dog which is being shown or trained, a boarding kennel, or a kennel where breedings are frequent, so that visiting bitches are frequently on the premises is likely to harbor infective particles. The worst shedders however, will be pet dogs newly exposed to a heavily trafficked environment, such as a boarding kennel. These dogs will be more seriously affected and will shed more virus particles. A visiting bitch staying in a kennel where susceptible pets are passing through will likely be more at risk than in visiting a show kennel, where all the dogs will have some resistance at all times, and shedding will be at lower levels. Certainly fighting a uterine or vaginal infection may be stress a bitch sufficiently to produce an adverse affect on resistance to Herpes. Certainly any bitch low in thyroid would find it more difficult to resist an infection. The thyroid levels necessary for the life of a comfortable pet and those necessary for reproduction, especially in the bitch, are not the same. Nature wants our children (human) to have children as teenagers, not as 40 year olds. We, of course don’t feel quite the same about children reproducing. Likewise, Nature wants dogs to whelp at 18 months, not 6 years of age. Thyroid normals represent all breeds, all ages, and all states of

health. It has been said that all dogs over 5 years old show a decrease in their thyroid level they’re starting to age. To lump the thyroid samples of 6 to 12 year olds with those of 1 to 5 year olds throws the “normal range” off considerably. Probably a good statement to make is that to ensure that thyroid doesn’t contribute to infertility, it should be (T4) in the upper one third to one fourth of the normal range. When looked at in a biologic perspective, when thyroid hormone decreases, naturally the first considerations of the body are to maintain health in the individual. Only in animals who are young and healthy enough to nurture puppies will Nature encourage reproduction, as a matter of course. On the other hand, since we have created most of our breeds in the last 100 to 200 years, it is somewhat unrealistic for us, with the kinds of remedies we have at hand, to worry overly much about what Nature wants of one of our dogs. If a bitch is in good health and over 5, and simply needs supplementation of l-thyroxin to continue to reproduce, it would be silly of us to worry about what Nature wants. Our dogs don’t live in “Nature” - except perhaps those running the Iditarod. A given animal’s suitability for breeding should be determined on its thyroid as a young dog, not on its levels in when it’s over 5 years of age. Other sources of immune suppression are parvo disease, lyme disease, and vaccinations with your regular booster vaccine which contains Distemper and Hepatitis (A2) virus, and which because of the combination of these two together causes about a 2 week immunosuppression. Parvo, like Herpes is endemic in our dog show population, and may be brought home from a show, and cycled by other dogs in the kennel subclinically, later affecting both the bred bitch and the young puppies in a way that it wouldn’t affect the rest of the adults in the kennel. Drugs (corticosteroids, chemotherapy), emotional family situations, moving, and so on can all produce stress. One of the chief uses of chilled or freshextended semen is to avoid the stresses of travel to breed a bitch. All of the common sense cautions we used to be aware of: don’t take your pregnant bitch to shows, and don’t ship her to be bred, are certainly largely explained by the conditions fostering a Herpes infection, resulting in early embryonic loss, resorption, still birth, weak puppies, and neonatal death. Herpes is one of the very few things that any veterinarian can determine on a quick autopsy of a dead puppy. There is grossly visible mottling on the kidneys that is totally diagnostic for Herpes. If you have a puppy die, refrigerate the body (don’t freeze it) and get your vet to look at it ASAP. Then ask the vet for directions for raising the body temperature of the remaining puppies in the litter. http://www.showdogsupersite.com/index.html Copyright © 1998 - 2001 Mica Media ________________________________________

Urban Ratting Update by Trudy Kawami

Fig. 2 Biologist Matt Combs weighing a rat. Photo courtesy of Johnny Milano. ome time ago I wrote about rat hunting in New York City, and how the rat carcasses were being used in a scientific study of New York’s rats being conducted at Fordham University by Matthew Combs. The first study in the project is now published – in the journal Molecular Ecology for 2017 - and I thought DCA Newsletter readers might want to know the results.

S

Matt was interested in not only where NYC’s Ratus norvegicus (Brown rat or Norway rat) came from, that is are they related to other populations of Brown rats around the world, but also why are they so successful as a species. After comparing their genome with that of other brown rata groups it seems that the founder population of NYC’s Brown rats came from Western Europe with the strongest connection to Great Britain and then with France. For all our images of rats coming ashore from foreign ships in the dead of night on the waterfront, there is no sign that Brown rats living in Asia have made any genetic contribution to NY’s rodent population. In other words the rats of New York form a single genetic population. The reason why they are so successful is, like real estate, location, location, location. Habitat availability – food and cover - is the key. Rats are commensals, that is animal that live with humans. They are very capable of exploiting the urban environment, and hence they thrive in an urban matrix. Matt also discovered that there are in general two population sub-groups in NYC’s rats – uptown rats and downtown rats (cue the music!). Uptown rats live above 59th St and downtown rats below 14th street.

18

Dachshund Club of America Spring 2018

Why the divide? Midtown, south of 59th Street and above 14th Street, has more commercial and fewer residential structures. It also has some major transportation hubs and a huge convention center. There are fewer “tables” for commensality, less food and more disturbances. While train stations and convention centers may be busy during the week and especially during the day, they are too disturbed for the rats to be comfortable, and there is far less regularly available food. Mid-town can’t compare to residential areas in habitat. Sure, there are rats in Midtown, but they often move uptown or downtown where the living is easier – and they can ride the subway there if they wish. In addition there are subtle genetic differentiations between populations on the East Side of uptown and the West Side. Like the humans crammed into the island of Manhattan, rats are very social and like to live in groups. They rarely venture more than 150 meters from their home territory (no bridges and tunnels for them), though they are capable of moving several kilometers during a rare dispersal event like Hurricane Sandy. Both male and female rats wander and genetic research also revealed that many unrelated rats were found at short distances from each other. This potential for movement along with the regular inflow of rats from Midtown ensures a healthy genetic diversity among the general rat population. Combine the actual movement of rats with a nearly 90% turnover in population in any given colony in a year (rats do have short lives), and you can see why NYC rats are genetically healthy. And of course all that kale and those transfat-free bagels help as well. !

WEAVES & RETRIEVES Changes and Challenges in the

New Obedience Rules for Open and Novice Classes By Karen R. Scheiner

f you have been competing in obedience for a while, and have felt that the Open exercises were not challenging enough, the AKC has finally heard you! Well, not exactly. Actually, the impetus to change the Obedience Regulations came after quite some time, prompted by discussion with trainers and handlers to ensure greater safety of dogs in the ring, primarily with regard to group exercises. But, as they say, be careful for what you wish for! If you thought it was difficult to get your doxy to sit in a single position for three minutes, and then lie down for five minutes, think again. Effective May 1, 2018, the new obedience rules for Open and Novice classes become effective. Now there are three different positions to teach your dog. What’s more, two of them must be performed, respectively, at distances of 15 feet and then 30 feet from the handler. Not only that, but the dog must not move out of any of those positions, until the handler – who ends up at the other side of the ring – gives another signal to “stay” and then returns to heel position. Although the new rules will improve safety and security for dogs in obedience, particularly small dogs, this does not come without a price to pay. Because the new exercises are considerably more difficult, they will take longer to train and the qualifying rate is surely to decline. Ironically, May 1 (the effective date of the new rules) and May 2 are the dates for the Regional and National Obedience trials, respectively, at the 2018 DCA National Convention in Columbus, Ohio. So as a group, our dogs will be some of the first in the country to tackle the new format of the Novice and Open exercises. From my perspective, it’s sort of like changing the rules midstream, once you have started to play the game. Just when you think you’ve trained your dog to successfully stay – sit or down- to earn that CDX (or even for a UDX leg), the AKC changes the rules and

I

28

makes it harder to play. The AKC has given us six months’ notice of these new exercises for training our dogs. Really? Six months for a dachshund to learn signals from a distance?!! In my opinion, the Command Discrimination exercises have changed the Open class so significantly, that if you have not yet done any training for the signal exercises in preparation for Utility, you will likely be sitting out of the ring for quite a while. On the other hand, the Novice exercises have also changed, however those group stays have become somewhat easier than they formerly were. So the Novice people get a bonus! Those changes will be discussed at the end of this article. Open obedience is touted as a fun activity for the dog and handler, and for the most part, I would have to agree. The dogs particularly love the chance to enter the Open ring with their owner and perform fun exercises, like retrieving a dumbbell, jumping the high jump, and leaping over the broad jump. Even heeling can be fun if taught the right way, with lots of praise and games. All exercises are off-lead, so the dogs at that level want to do it right! The new exercises however, require so much more training, I would anticipate that for most people, it will take significantly longer to teach these skills. The good news is that once the Command Discrimination skills have been mastered, the dog will be so much more prepared to move on and up to Utility competition! For those unfamiliar with the Open exercises as we have known them for many years, briefly, the long stays would always occur at the end of the class. Normally after eight to ten dogs performed the required individual exercises, they would return to the ring for a “group” exercise, where handlers would line up the dogs, and were told to leave their dogs in a sit for three minutes, and a down for five minutes, and go out of sight each time. The problem was

that there were too many occasions when dogs would not obediently sit or lie still, but they would get up and invade the space of another dog, often causing disruption or harm to another dog. Reasonably, this could not be tolerated any longer by the AKC. No doubt, some change was necessary. The changes in the Open exercises include the addition of the “Command Discrimination” exercises (Section 8.), and the “Stay – Get Your Leash” exercises (Section 17.) The other Open exercises are exactly the same as before, except without group exercises. The benefit to the new rules is that you can enter multiple dogs in the class (as in Utility), without the need for a second handler for group stays. When you leave the ring with your dog, you immediately are told if you qualified (or not), so no longer waiting around until the end, unless it’s for a green ribbon!

COMMAND DISCRIMINATION Instead of group stays, the rules now require that the dog perform the “Command Discrimination” exercises, which occur during (not at the end) of the program. These Command Discrimination exercises are to be set up along the long dimension of the ring. Before the class starts, the judge will mark the floor (with painter’s tape or masking tape), at the place where the handler and dog will start, 15 feet past that line, and another 15 feet, which is near the other end of the ring. I mention this only because one of my dachshunds, having never seen wide strips of tape all over the floor, felt it necessary to investigate the tape, when he was otherwise sent out to retrieve the dumbbell during a runthrough. It may be a good idea to put large pieces of painter’s tape on the floor in strategic locations, when you are practicing, just for proofing! In any event, the tape will be there in the ring to show you where to stand at the 15 foot increments.

In fact, the new Command Discrimination exercises are more similar to the Utility signal exercises, than they are to the former Open group stays. Actually, they require even more training than in Utility, because there are now six different ways the dog might have to position himself, instead of the same three positions that are always in Utility exercises. It is unfortunate that the AKC could not conceive of exercises more equivalent in difficulty to the Open group stays. This is despite the fact that they spent a year or more considering these rule changes, with input from a number of handlers and trainers. As stated, the AKC’s reasoning behind the rule change is to ensure the safety of all of the dogs, which is admirable. Whether the goal to make the exercises friendlier, and in turn increase participation, will be met, is yet to be determined. The new exercises are definitely safer, as there is only one dog in the ring at a time. Yet the level of difficulty, particularly for a dog finishing Novice and having just learned Open exercises, is significantly more rigorous than before. As stated, there are six (6) different command positions and orders for exercises that can be used in Open. (See insert photo below). However, “Open I” will always be used in the Open A class. In the B classes, the judge will choose one of the six orders before the class starts. In Open A, Command Discrimination will always take place after heeling and figure 8 exercises. The Command Discrimination exercise would go something like this: The dog starts from a sit in heel position. The judge will direct the handler to “stand your dog.” With the dog in heel position, the handler will give a signal and/or verbal command to the dog to stand. The handler may not touch the dog. The judge will then tell you to leave your dog. As a practice tip, if the dog forges forward on the stand, the handler should not move to heel position to correct the placement before leaving. First of all, the rules do not specifically state that the dog must be standing in perfect heel position. That means that the judge cannot deduct points for a crooked stand. Second, if the handler moves forward and then stops at heel position, the AKC considers this to be a “stay signal” to the dog. Therefore, you cannot then tell the dog to “stay” as this will be counted as a second command and thus an NQ. This is really quite a technicality, but important to remember when you are in the ring. Therefore, assuming that you stay still after the dog stands, you can then tell the dog to stay, and you walk to the first 15-foot marker, and turn to face the dog. The judge will then give the signal to “down” your dog. The handler can then signal and/or verbally command the dog to lie down. The judge will then order the handler again to “leave” the dog. The handler may tell the dog to “stay” and then walk to the second 15-foot marker in the ring and turn and face the dog. The judge will give a second signal to the handler to “sit” the dog. Once the handler signals the dog to sit, the judge will

order “back to your dog.” The handler may again give a command and/or signal to stay, and he then must return directly around the dog to heel position. Note that the handler is required to walk behind the dog. The AKC has designated that the options for the order of the Open B exercises are from “Open I” through “Open VI.” In each, there is a different position order for the Command Discrimination exercise and where it should occur within a given class. The judge’s directions will be substantially similar to those given to the Open A people (as set forth above), except with the correct position of the dog. The chart showing the order of the six different variations of the order of exercises appears below. Note that the Command Discrimination positions appear in upper case letters (next page): Notably, the most challenging Command

Discrimination exercises are in Open IV and Open VI. These involve the commands where the dog is directed to stand up from a down position. Teaching this at a close proximately is a challenge, but when you are 15 or 30 feet away and asking the dog to stand up from a down, is not an easy feat, particularly for a dachshund! As a practice tip, the best method to teach all of the signals, but particularly the stand from a down (or a sit) might be for the handler to stand directly in front of the dog. You can use a treat or a toy to get the dog to stand. You want more of a “kick-stand” where the dog kicks his hind legs up and back into a stand, and the front legs do not forge. If you are standing in front of the dog, he will not be able to forge, so this would hopefully carry over to when he is given the signal and you are farther continued on next page...

Dachshund Club of America Spring 2018

Weaves & Retrieves continued from page 29 away. I have shared some photos of suggested ways to train the dog for the exercises, shown by placing a stick in front of his feet. All of the positions must be done behind that stick. Note that if the dog forges slightly, it is only points off. However, if he forges as much as one body length, that will be judged as an NQ. More discussion on training these exercises, as questions arise, in will be written in future articles. It is also worth mentioning that although the Obedience Regulations specifically provide that the judge will signal the handler for the dog’s change of position, however the AKC has not defined what the judges signals to the handler should look like. So these will lack uniformity, from one judge to the next. The judges that I have spoken with have indicated that they will demonstrate to the handlers, before the class begins, exactly how they will give the signals. Additionally, if you can recall the order of what your dog is to do in advance (it will be posted on the board outside of the ring), the judge’s signal shouldn’t be too difficult to figure out.

STAY & GET YOUR LEASH As if the Command Discrimination were not enough, the second change that has been implemented in the Open Exercises is the “Stay-Get your Leash.” This occurs at the end of each dog’s program. In this exercise, on judge’s directive, with dog sitting in heel position, the handler must tell the dog to either sit, or lie down (depending on the order of the Open exercise, this could be reversed). The handler then walks across the ring, turns and faces the dog, and waits for one minute, until the judge tells him to return to heel position. Once that is done, the handler is told to signal the dog to change position (either down from sit, or sit from a down). You can do this

verbally and/or with signals. You are then told to leave your dog, and you must walk to just outside of the ring and pick up the dog’s leash which is to be on a chair outside of the ring. You then return to the ring with the leash, and face the dog until the judge tells you to return to your dog. After the judge says, “exercise finished,” you can clip the leash on your dog and leave the ring. This part of Open is not particularly difficult for dogs of this level, as it is very similar to the former Novice group stays. Invariably, it will be time-consuming, and likely to be noticeably inconvenient when there is a large Open entry.

NOVICE STAYS - MODIFICATIONS Sit Stay – Get Your Leash. At the end of the dog’s individual exercises

in Novice, the judge will tell the handler to sit their dog at an identified spot in the ring. The handler then sits the dog in heel position, signals the dog to stay, and on judge’s directive, the handler will walk across the ring to pick up the leash. The handler then turns and waits for the judge to say “Back to your dog.” The handler must return directly, walking around and in back of the dog to heel position. The dog must not move from the sitting position until the judge says “Exercise finished.” The handler is then to clip the leash on the dog’s collar and leave with the dog under control. You would then wait outside of the ring, as before, for the group exercises to return with your dog.

NOVICE GROUP EXERCISES In contrast to Open, the Novice class continues to have group exercises, however the rules have been slightly modified. First of all, if a dog has failed any of the individual Novice exercises prior to the stays, it is mandated that they are not permitted to return to the ring for group stays. Unlike in the past, there is no handler discretion any longer. When the dogs return to the ring for the stays, the handlers are to bring them in on a six-foot lead and set up their dogs on a designated line, in the center of the ring, facing outward. The dogs remain on-lead at all times. The dogs are to be six feet apart from one another (in a 50’ long ring), and minimum of four feet from ring gates. The distance between dogs will seem like a shorter distance with the handlers next to their dogs in the ring. The measurement is from dog to dog, without regard to the handlers. If there are more than six dogs to be in the group, then they are to be arranged on two lines, back to back, but also six feet of space in the center between any two dogs. If there are seven dogs, for example, then the judge will set up four on one line and three on the other. The maximum number of dogs for

30

Dachshund Club of America Spring 2018

group stays is twelve (in a 50 ft. long ring). The handlers will be told to sit their dogs, then leave their dogs. They are expected to walk to the end of the leash, continue to hold the leash, then turn and face their dog. After one minute, they are to return to heel position. The handlers are then told to set up their dogs in a down stay and the same instructions are given. The down stay is also for one minute. (This is reduced from the prior three-minute down stay.) During these group exercises, the dog’s leash should remain loose. There are substantial deductions, which may result in points off or rise to an NQ at the judge’s discretion, if the handler jerks or tightens the leash or if the dog barks or whines, or moves out of place.

CONCLUSION It is admirable that the AKC has implemented exercises to improve the safety of our dogs, in both Novice and Open classes. Although in the Novice class, there still is a possibility that a dog, albeit on lead, may lunge at another. However, chances are that the handlers, being closer to the dogs, and having the opportunity to control their dogs on-lead, will have greater ability to prevent any untoward incident. In Open, no longer do we have to worry about a large unruly dog sitting next to our dachshunds, while we are outside, and our dog is out of sight. Given the difficulty of the new Open exercises, however, I anticipate that the number of obedience entries will likely decline. Hopefully such decline will be short-lived and that handlers will ultimately rise to the increased challenge of training the new exercises to their dogs, with a goal toward earning that CDX and, eventually, even a UDX. ________________________________________

I prepared this article after having the opportunity to attend a day-long seminar presented by five AKC obedience judges, one of whom is also an AKC rep. The program was specifically designed to introduce and review the implementation and application of the new obedience rules. The program was advertised to the judges as an informal occasion to try the new instructions with dogs and handlers in the ring. The program was offered to handlers as a chance to become familiar with the new rules before they are officially implemented. The information herein concerning the changes in regulations is accurate. More complete information about these new rules can be found on-line at the AKC website. See insert to orange cover, 2016 Obedience Regulations, entitled, “Revisions to the Obedience Regulations, effective May 1, 2018.” All references to a section number in this article refer to this insert. The commentary in this article is mine and does not reflect the opinion of any AKC judge. !

Dachshund Clothing _______________ Before I succumbed to canine fever, I scorned people who put clothes on dogs. Good grief, didn’t they know that they are animals and that they had furry coats to keep them warm? Then I got my first Dachshund, a young active, skinny wire-haired boy named Willow. And then we had a cold, wet autumn. Willow shivered on our walks, and his low-slung frame put him close to the wet ground. His chest and tummy got wet and dirty, and soggy leaves found their way into the house. Willow needed clothes! Cute knit sweaters didn’t cut it for rain, and they left his under-carriage exposed anyway. Besides what self-respecting Dachsie, a keen hunter of urban rats, wanted to wear pink? Or have “Looking Pretty” on his back? So I searched for “serious” outwear with no success, and ended up sewing something from an old olive drab rain jacket that at least looked a bit martial. And more or less did the job. In a moment of extravagance a dog friend ordered two Burberry dog coats. When they eventually arrived, they were too big for her minis, but they fit my dogs fine. (Willow by now had a companion.) My, we looked smart – and warm – as we did our daily constitutionals. But on a winter visit to friends in Maine these two fine hunting dogs located game, a red fox, hanging out under a summer cottage. After several adventures in the snow as the late afternoon darkened, we got the dogs out, only to discover that they had shed their pricey coats under that old cottage. So we were back to shopping for dog clothes. Several dogs later I found my larger Dachsies needed larger coats, but the usual ready-made coats still didn’t cover the chest and tummy very

well and were often too wide or too narrow for a Dachshund. I found a fancy number that that did cover the necessary areas, but you had to put it over the dog’s head, pass the “tummy section” over the chest, between the forelegs, and secure it with two velcro straps that came up over the back. It looked good and did the job, but was hard to put on when an excited Dachsie was jumping up and down to go out. After a nosenumbing smack in the face as I bent down and the dog jumped up, I stopped using it. I was given a lovely hand-knit sweater in appropriately earthy tones AND the correct body length for a Dachshund. It kept Willow’s granddaughter Driad cosy until her sister chewed a huge hole in one side – while Driad was wearing it (sibling rivalry anyone?). I continued to add to my “dog closet.”

The years have gone by and I have down-sized with Ember, a mini whose tiny size is great for hole work on woodchucks but VERY hard to fit. Being less than eight lbs. and a smoothie, she does need clothes in cold weather. But she can’t wear anything with “sleeves” as the extra fabric catches her feet and makes her stumble. She can’t wear anything too thick, like heavy fleece, as the fabric nearly scrapes the ground. I have one “tank top” that I can keep on her by lacing her collar through the “shoulder straps”. This past year I found a great little sweater of the correct size and length ON SALE at a dog show. It was a great bargain – real Australian wool! Alas, it now has a sizeable hole near one leg due to a jealous(?) companion. After scoffing at “dog clothes” I now need a de-cluttterer to help me find that little brown sweater that fit so well last year and is somewhere, somewhere in there. !

Joe Baffuto gave the Financial Report as follows: Good morning Everyone! It is personally excellent for me to be back in Orlando and a part of the weekend events and celebrations that is the AKC National Championship presented by Royal Canin! Before we embark in all the festivities with such wonderful people and most especially the dogs from all over the world - I am here to provide you with a financial performance report of The American Kennel Club through November 30, 2017. At first topside glance, let’s summarize our year to date revenues and expenses. Through November 30, we have recorded nearly $65.4 million in Total Revenue and $60.5 million in Total Expenses, for an Operating Income of $4.86 million dollars. This is in comparison to our prior year results where

we recognized $59.3 million in Revenue with $54.2 million in Expenses and an outstanding $5.1 million in Operating Income. Let’s next here observe our Core Registration Volumes through November 30. We have registered totals of 219,000 litters and 517,000 dogs over 11 months this year. Our litter volume has increased by 7% from 205,000 in 2016, while our dog registrations have also escalated by 7% from 483,000 at November 30, 2016. As we look to close December, our hope is to surpass the milestones of 240,000 litters and 560,000 dogs by year-end. We have now had 4 consecutive years of non-declining volumes and the AKC has not recognized these peak total volumes since 2009. We are getting a return on our investments and customer support efforts! Congratulations to an entire team focus and an overall dedication to success! I’d like to conclude our brief performance report with the phenomenal fact that our longterm Net Assets have increased by more than $16 million or 21% over the past year! Thank you to everyone on the Board, Management and Staff, and the Delegate Body for contributing to AKC’s outstanding achievements in 2017! We wish everyone to have a memorable time here in Orlando! Continued success ahead in 2018! Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

CASTING VS TRAILING IN FIELD TRIALS By Jennifer Milosavljevic At my last field trial, I was watching my bitch who was supposed to be following a scent line. Instead, she started casting after she ran the scent for a very short period. I had released her, and all I could do was stand and watch. I did enjoy the show she put on as she ran off the scent line and into the tall grass, flushed a rabbit, then sight chased it far out of my sight where she lost the rabbit and finally came back to me. I swear, she had a big smile on her face! I think she had the most fun ever! I had seen her do this at the previous trial, casting after she was on a scent line. It finally dawned on me that because of all the casting we have been doing up in Washington State she really did not know what I wanted from her. In 2007, a fire burned the majority of our field in Castle Rock, WA. What was left of the rabbit population was literally wiped out in a flood in 2009, the entire area was under water for several days. Since then we still brace on rabbits when we can but casting had been a norm for many years. I would often speculate if we would be casting at the end of the day and which dog/bitch I would run. Some of mine were not that great at casting, they did better on a scent line, others, better at casting. Often times I called my dogs “cheaters” going off to find their own rabbit. When other times that is what I have been asking of them, to go find their own “bunny.” Next, I started thinking about the casting, and with each set of judges wondering what their expectations were. I have my own set of expectations when I judge casting that I will share with you along with some other judge’s opinions about what their expectations are when casting. I also wanted to dive deeper into casting and one of the ethical questions another judge posed to me, should a dog/bitch be awarded a first-place casting, knowing it may lead to a field champion title? Or should a first place be withheld when casting only? I thought it was a good question to ponder. My thought was yes, dogs should be awarded that first place and no placements withheld unless if was for lack of merit. Casting is allowed in the field trial rules and regulations, so we do judge the dogs on casting. Casting, for those that are not familiar with the concept, is your dog/bitch is off lead attempting to pick up a scent line and seek out the “rabbit” that left that scent line. The dogs are searching for a scent line instead of trailing the fresh scent of the rabbit presented in regular field trials. We use casting when we have no options left, the rabbits just are

54

Dachshund Club of America Spring 2018

not there for us to use. I judged a field champion class of 8 or 9 braces once, it took us 6 hours to finish the class on rabbit, we finally had to cast a 2nd series, or we would have been there several more hours. What are the casting expectations? I have been under a plethora of interpretations of what casting is. One set of judges had us stand there, be quiet, let the dogs loose and see what they do. One set wanted to see how obedient your dog was. Each judge took a handler dog team, followed them and pointed out something they wanted the dog to check out; you had to call your dog back and have them check it out, even if they already checked it. Sometimes we follow our dog, give them commands and watch how they work. I prefer to let my dogs move out on their own with very little instruction, I give some commands when necessary and see what they can show me. I prefer my dogs to stay relatively close, within 20-80 feet, check in and go about finding their game. I do not want my dog running off. There may be a small “blow out” period, but as long as the dog is back shortly that is ok. Why do I prefer this way? Besides field trials my longhair flushes pheasants for me. She has to circle out, check in and keep close enough that if she flushes a pheasant I need to be able to make a shot. I cannot make a good shot on a bird that is more than 20-30 yards from me. If you’re truly hunting with a dog that is flushing small game, it needs to be close enough so that you can make the shot. I spoke to another judge who is new to field trial judging but has over 20 years hunting his dogs on rabbit and pheasant and he agreed they need to flush in close for a good shot. I spoke to a few other judges regarding their opinions with casting in the field and they seemed to be consistent in what they were looking for in casting; Team work, between the handler and the dog. Looking to see that the dog can and is responding to the handler and the handler can also motivate the dog to continue on with the puzzle of seeking out game. Does your dog understand what it is you want them to do? Cooperation with the other team of handlers. Can both dogs and handlers work together without interfering with each other? They were also looking for dogs actively hunting and not just going for a walk in the field. We also realized there could be an initial “blow out” where dogs off the lead for a first time not on scent can run out a distance. They were looking for a dog that could recover, come back when called and get back to work. Stamina, can the dog continue to hunt and not outright quit? Dogs should be allowed to range out, but no so far you lose sight and have no control over them. I look at it as if you had to make a shot on the game they flushed, would it have been to far of a shot to be productive? Next, I come to the problem with my dog casting when she is supposed to be trailing the scent already on the ground. I have to change how I will train my dogs. I will incorporate tracking training with a separate set of commands vs casting with its own set of commands so that when I am at a field trial my dog/bitch knows what I have asked them to do. I had this conversation with another friend who agreed that this may be what is necessary for field trialing where casting may be a portion of the trial for that day. I would in the future like to see casting outlined better in the rules and have one set of guidelines. I know many people have talked with me about it over the years. I hear from a lot of handlers leaving saying that they had no idea what the judge wanted and what they were looking for. Narrowing down expectations in casting is a way the handler has a better expectation of what the judges are looking for and how to run your dog. ! * Thank you to the following people who have had conversations with me on the topic and letting me know your thoughts about casting. Letters to and from the editor Hi Members and Subscribers, I first want to apologize for the lateness of this issue. Life throws us a curve ball when it’s least expected. My husband and I have owned a boarding/grooming business for the last 12+ years. Those of you that are familiar with running a boarding kennel know it’s a 24/7 job. After being diagnosed in early 2016 with IPF (Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis), in January of this year, my husband suffered a collapsed lung (pneumothorax). He was hospitalized for 10 days, and is at least stable. It is a terminal illness. At 67 years old, he will be forced to retire early. I will not be able to handle the many responsibilities of this business by myself, and I guess I have to also retire (hopefully temporarily!). It certainly wasn’t what we had planned. The business will be sold, we will be moving to the east side of Wisconsin to be near family and better medical care. As beautiful as far northern Wisconsin is, it’s rural, and adequate medical care is just too far away. I will still continue producing the newsletter, but the next issue may be delayed a bit while we are in the process of moving. Thank you for understanding. As soon as I have my new address and e-mail, it will be published. Good luck to everybody at Nationals! I hope everything goes well and everybody enjoys the time with friends and especially the time spent with your beautiful dogs! I so wish I could be there!

There have been a few concerns with corrections and changes with mistakes that have been made in recent issues of the magazine. If you send me a correction, and I do not respond - please call! Sometimes emails just don’t get here! Also, being human, I do make mistakes sometimes, it is never on purpose, just an error. If you let me know, those corrections can be made in the on-line issue published about a month after the print magazine is mailed. If you have any questions or concerns about the newsletter, let me know, I’ll do my best to address them. Corrections from the Winter 2018 issue: • Page 48 - Florida Gulf Coast Dachshund Club Field Trial Results, 10/28/17: A reformatting problem. When I receive the results via the DCA website, they do not resemble what you see printed. This was my mistake - a cut and paste issue. The correct results are published in the Winter 2017 issue on-line. • Page 33-34 - the Pramada ad had incorrect info and pictures due to a reformatting problem when the file was sent to me. (please send all ad layouts, if you do them, in a PDF format, not docx.) • Page 38 - from Vicki Spencer: Under Standing Committees, two references were made to TAC, when it should have been PEC. See the corrections here: https://issuu.com/dachshundclubofamerica/docs/dca_winter_2017 Again, have a great time at Nationals!

National Specialty

April 22 - May 5, 2018 As of Monday, March 18, and with great disappointment, M.A. Klein, DCA 2018 Tracking Chair and Ann Kraft, DCA 2018 Tracking Secretary, made the decision to cancel the 2018 DCA Tracking Test. Two and a half weeks ago, one of our judges discovered he was double booked - AKC didn't catch it either - and he had to go with the club he had contracted with first. Please realize we did everything we could. If you are participating in this year's DCA Triathlon, and you have earned a TD,TDX, or VST title since DCA 2017 (the outdoor performance events ended on May 20, 2017), contact Denny Van Hook at k9coach@aol.com so the points allocated for those tests can be recorded.
