RECENTLY AT CYC

Just before Christmas our annual Tramping Camp embarked on a mission into the Snowden Forest Conservation Area with 9 keen trampers. Tramping camps these days are almost luxury compared to the tales we hear of the CYC tramping camps of old - we stayed all 3 nights in the Kiwiburn hut. We did day trips out each day with an attempt on the mountain behind the hut which was abandoned half way up due to the falling snow; another into the Whitestone Valley which was amazing and another exploring the area around the hut. Tim spoke to the campers about the role of the Bible, Prayer, Church and Evangelism in our lives. 3 out of the 4 campers came from Christian homes – so pray that these campers were encouraged in their journey with the Lord and pray that the girl that does not know the Lord found the words of life at this camp.

Cavalcade Camp had 7 campers, they rode around the hills of East Otago at Paton’s farm. This year they decided to add the extra challenge of carrying all their gear for the camp on their own horses and 2 pack horses. They stayed their first night in a beautiful hut hidden away at the end of a valley with a quiet river next door. The second day they rode out into the Paton’s farm, they had some challenges including deteriorating weather, but everyone safely made it to Mrs Paton’s house for a scrumptious tea and a much appreciated shower and bed. The last day had the cavalcade riding over Tracey and Paul’s property before they packed up and headed home. Alf spoke to the girls about about 4 of the disciples relationship with Jesus and how it related to us and our relationship with Jesus. All up it was a fantastic camp and great experience for all involved.

Summer Boys Camp had 36 campers, many new leaders from Auckland and was a real good camp. The camp theme was “The Amazing Race” which had the boys completing all manner of road blocks and detours during the week. The speaker’s (Gareth Jones from Auckland) talks were taken from the example of Daniel. He was able to engage the campers’ attention and interest throughout each of the 40-50min sessions, assisted with the visual appeal of a power-point presentation, and interactive activities such as spot quizzes. It was encouraging to see a good number of boys attend the voluntary time each afternoon. Please pray for the continued work of the Holy Spirit in the campers.

Summer Girls Camp had 27 campers, quite a few new leaders & some great superhero related activities. Irene Bayne spoke about different ‘heroes of the faith’ (Hebrews 11) and stories of past Christians (Amy Carmichael) concluding with a talk on Friday about Jesus being the greatest ever superhero. Games and activities were extended to include the superhero theme e.g. Captains coming turned into Captain America’s coming and “The Amazing Race” was adapted to include a superhero rescue mission as part of it. We also had some songs (and actions!) before the talks that included superhero themes.

Boys Motorbike Camp had 9 campers, it was run without any incident under our new certification for Trail Bike Riding under the Adventure Regulations. It was encouraging to see a slightly bigger contingent of campers this time around. For many of the campers this is the only CYC Camp that they attend with Motorbike’s being their core passion. It awesome that the leaders we have can share this enthusiam and passion for these “petrol powered noise machines” but even more cool is that through this mutual interest the leaders are able to relate and share their faith in Jesus with the kids that bit more easily. Pray that Sam Duthie’s talks are used by the Holy Spirit to start a new work in these campers!

Adventure Camp had 15 campers and an amazing program of outdoor activities including a camp-out at Alf’s farm. Alf Bradfield spoke to the campers about 4 of the disciples’ relationship with Jesus and how it related to us and our relationship with Jesus. This camp being one of the only two CYC mixed gender camps creates a great environment for leaders to create new friendships, foster old ones and most importantly allows us to openly communicate with the youth, the free gift God has offered us. This particular camp was no exception, with a great team of leaders and campers. Several of the girls at this camp were very keen to start bible reading devotions after camp was over. God is good!

COMING UP AT CYC What an amazing God we worship and serve !!! It really was blessing upon blessing He poured out on the summer camps here at CYC Waihola this past summer. We give praises to the Lord for good weather, great campers, passionate leaders, scrumptious food, great safety, an excellent Adventure Activities audit, amazing camp programs and most important for the opportunity to share the words of Life with kids – words that bring light to the darkness! Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever. Psalm 136:1 With the new Health and Safety Reform Bill coming into effect in April, CCNZ are hosting Health and Safety Workshops throughout the country to explain the new changes to boards and staff of Christian Camps. We are hosting a workshop here on Monday 22nd February 2016. This legislation has the potential to effect us greatly so having some knowledge about it is very important. Anyone that is interested in attending can come – please RSVP to info@cycwaihola.org.nz if you plan to attend. We are planning a February Work Day on Saturday 27th February. All are welcome to attend. We are constantly getting comments from accommodation groups about our campsite looking pretty sweet – this is largely in part to the large team of volunteers that have been at previous work weekends. The plan this coming work day is to finish the Homestead Lounge linings, painting preparation and get some more grounds/gardens maintenance completed.

Come along!
