Welcome to AMA District 16 and all our 2020 events

his guide is filled with a wide selection of great events, scheduled all across Wisconsin and Michigan’s UP, so dive in and start making some plans for this 2020 season. It doesn’t matter if you’re into dirt track, motocross, cruising on a big touring bike, catching a dual sport ride or whatever... this sport offers great memories just waiting to happen at every turn. Many of us have had the great fortune to grow up with this sport, and even after many years of riding and racing, we continue to look forward to the next

trip as much as ever. The riding is always a highlight, but just as enjoyable is time spent with all the wonderful people that participate and work to put the events on. There really isn’t a good way to explain the rewards of the friendship and camaraderie that you’ll find in this sport. We can only tell you that it’s all here waiting for you... so come on out and get involved and make the most of your 2020. Hopefully we’ll see you at the track, or in the woods this summer.

Participating with District 16

etting started is actually pretty easy, assuming you have the right bike and a way to get to the events, you're already half way there. Finding a dealer and buying a bike: Whether you already own a bike or are planning on buying a new/ used bike you will still have to find a dealer to get parts and service. A local motorcycle dealer that is involved in the sport is a great source to help you get started in racing, and you’ll find that dealer is just important in the years to come. Establish a good relationship with a quality local dealer. When purchasing your bike, it’s important to purchase the correct machine. Racing classes are designed by the AMA to fit the age of a rider to a machine engine size. Youth classes are designated by age and machine engine/ frame size. Adult classes are either formed by machine size and age or rider classification/ experience. You must have a machine that matches your age, ability and the rules of the racing you are interested in. When in doubt, read carefully, double check the rules, make a few phone calls and avoid the heartache of making an incorrect choice. Important reality check... Motorsports racing is inherently dangerous. There is always a risk of serious injury. Riders should not participate in events or ride unless they have adequate medical insurance. Riders and/or their guardians are solely responsible for using adequate equipment. Ride at your own risk. As a rider, you must rely on your own judgment. Although all AMA District 16 sanctioned meets are conducted under the guidelines established in the AMA rulebook and District 16 supplemental rules, each club or promoter may operate a bit differently. Several things you can expect regardless of where you race: •You must be a AMA member to compete in any type of AMA amateur competition. If you are not already a current AMA member, you may join at the facility on the day of an event, or at americanmotorcyclist.com. Another good tip is to go to the Racing Getting Started portion of the site, and check into the annual release, in particular for minor riders. Family members, look for the special rates that may be available to you. •You will be required to agree not to sue the AMA or the organizer, at each event you’ll be required to sign release statements. Minors often need additional release forms completed by both parents or guardians. Most events will require parents or assigned guardian be present to enter the grounds as a spectator... best bet, contact the event promoter in advance if you have any doubts. •District 16 registration will also be required. You will be able to join the district organization at the event as well. Easier yet, do it on line in minutes at www.amadistrict16.com. •All participants and spectators attending a race may be required to pay an admission fee upon entering the facility. Race participants also pay a registration or entry fee in addition to the admission fee. •All participants must wear a protective helmet, eye protection, gloves, a long-sleeve shirt, protective pants and boots that are at least eight inches high.

•It is your responsibility to know the rules. Become familiar with the AMA Rulebook. The AMA competition rules are available for download in Adobe Acrobat PDF format. District 16 has some additional rules, and they can be found at amadistrict16.com A district organization is composed of enthusiasts like you, as well as clubs, promoters and elected district officials. District 16 covers Wisconsin and Michigan’s UP. AMA District 16 has an abundance of motorcycling activity. The task of finalizing schedules, issuing racing numbers and points keeping is handled at the district level, by volunteers. As a registered participant of District 16 you may be issued a racing number if applicable, be eligible to earn points at events in which you participate, and have those points recorded for possible year-end awards. For a schedule of events in your area, refer to this event guide or www.amadistrict16.com. All these sources also contain contact information for the event promoting organizations. You can always contact us at District 16 for information on schedules, racing numbers, rules or other questions. A good place to start may be the director/ referee of the side of the sport you want to get involved with... example, the motocross referee to answer a motocross related question. Easier yet, show up at an event as a spectator and start asking questions, you’ll find everyone quite welcoming.

Great Dirt Track Racing

f you've ever had the desire to pitch a motorcycle sideways in a corner, then accelerate through a controlled slide, dirt-track racing is the place for you. Dirt track races are run on various lengths of prepared oval tracks: short tracks, which are less than 2,250 feet in circumference; half-miles, measuring from 2,250 feet up to roughly five-eighths of a mile; and miles, which as the name implies are a mile in circumference. In addition, Tourist Trophy or TT scrambles events are held on tracks including right- and left-hand turns and a jump. Classes are available for riders in different age groups and skill levels, and on a wide variety of machine types and sizes, both with two or four wheels. The season in District 16 kicks off in May and then runs through the summer. There are motorcycle classes for the youngest of riders right

through the over 50 year age class for the distinguished riders. Many events also have several classes for atv riders, thrilling the spectators. These events are often known as the most

spectator friendly with bleachers overlooking the entire race track. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re able to get close to the action and really feel the excitement involved in each part of the race.

Trials... Very Skill Driven T rials is a form of motorcycle competition that emphasizes precise balance and control while riding over a designated area of difficult terrain. It’s not a race... only one rider is ‘observed’ at a time. It can be slow, so slow that the rider may even stand still, as long as he (or she) doesn’t put a foot down. The range of skills and techniques employed by the best riders is deceptively varied. Just imagine trying to fling yourself and your cycle up over a five foot wall. Or edging down a steep, rocky, mosscovered hillside, then turning across the slope to cross a large sloping log before charging and winding your way back up. How about leaping and balancing your way up a stream loaded with both small and large rocks. So, Observed Trials is a battle between the rider and the terrain. The rider who makes the fewest mistakes wins. And since it is essentially a solo battle, the rider can practice at home, even on level ground, perfecting such skills as balance, turning and clutch control. Trials ‘Obstacles’ can even be set up in a backyard. The sport is very spectator friendly... but expect to do a little walking through the woods for the best views.

Trials events in D16 offer free spectating, so make sure to check one out this summer! They are perfect for families.

Competition isn’t racing, it is a test of skill, with most obstacles actually challenged at very low speeds.

ach year the District 16 Awards Banquet arrives in November, this year on the 6-8th. In recent years, it has always been held in the popular and centrally located Wisconsin Dells, at the famous Kalahari Resort & Water Park. Riders from all the divisions come together to spend a weekend having fun and celebrating the just completed season. Top performers get beautiful plaques, and customized jackets. There’s also a bunch of cool door prizes and raffles, often including 2 motorcycles and a lot of

other fantastic prizes, all following a great dinner with friends. You don’t have to be a top finisher to enjoy this, as it is a great time spent with others that love this sport. We get a very special rate at the resort, so it is a prefect chance to make it into a family/ friend weekend. Don’t miss it in 2020!

Hill Climbing Excitement

ack in the 1920s, hill climbing was the most popular form of motorcycle competition. Although the number of hillclimb events has dwindled over the years, the enthusiasm of the participants remains strong and District 16 will host eight of these very exciting events in 2020. Hillclimbs are essentially a one-person drag race up the face of a challenging hill and each rider is allowed at least two attempts to conquer the climb. The winner is the rider who climbs the hill the quickest. In cases where riders don't make it all the way to the top, results are based on footage, or the distance traveled before losing forward momentum. There’s a variety of different classes starting with a youth group and continuing through the open class monsters with ground shaking power. There’s also stock length classes, so standard motocross bikes often come out to give it a try. Hillclimbs are exciting and very convenient/ popular for spectators and families. You’ll usually be able to get some great viewing without having to move around much, and the action is pretty much non stop, right from the start of the day. If you’ve never been to one of these events, make plans for one in 2020.

outh Off Road Riders was established in November 2017 and launched learn to ride clinics by April 2018. The organization’s mission is to build awareness of off-road riding opportunities for kids. Youth Off Road Riders provide dirt bikes, riding and safety gear courtesy of FLY Racing and coaching at all riding clinics. In two years, Youth Off Road Riders have put over 400 kids in WI on dirt bikes and have watched over 40 riders purchase bikes, over 60 kids purchase riding gear and over a dozen kids start their racing journeys. Leadership coach Autumn Czappa works with the youngest riders (3.5 to 5 years). “Watching kids go from not being able to balance at all to riding is such a special moment. They are so proud of themselves and we are all high fiving and smiling from ear to ear. You can see the parents kind a freak out at first and then when they see the child riding, they are so proud! I love being able to teach these kids!”

The impact to the off-road industry has just begun. Most of the families knew nothing about the sport before coming to a learn to ride clinic. Youth Off Road Riders youth leadership help the parents understand the different types of bikes and suggest the bike sizes/ brands that will work best for their child. The cool part….. We are finding that parents are not just buying bikes for their children, we are seeing Moms and Dads buying bikes, making it a family sport!

2020 will be an exciting year for Youth Off Road Riders. Learn to ride clinics have expanded to new locations across the state and we are reaching out to dealerships to build awareness of our program for families looking for training opportunities.

2020 Off-Road Exciting Changes for D16 Your true Off-Road Championship series is here

he new for 2020 Off-Road series is a combination of Hare Scrambles, Gran Prixs and Enduros, making one great season long series by combining points. There will be twelve unique venues with three new locations for 2020. The series is sixteen races consisting of seven hare scrambles, five enduros and four GPâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. This is by far the best mix of off-road events District 16 has ever offered. Hare scramble races are timed races where riders do as many laps as possible. Race times vary per class, roughly thirty minutes for 50cc, one hour for the 65cc, 85cc, +50 and Vintage classes. AA, A, B, +30A/B, +40B are two-hour long races. Hare scrambles are conducted on marked courses over rugged natural terrain. District 16 hare scrambles at times combine a portion of a motocross track and plenty of wooded trails when available. Courses often range from two to six miles in length. Events start in the morning and continue through

the afternoon, making for a comfortable day. The GranPrix (GP) racing was introduced in District 16 in 2017 and continues to grow in popularity with riders from all disciplines taking part. It is a two-moto format except for 50cc, they are one. Each moto is approximately thirty minutes. Motos are scored separately and then combined for overall position, similar to motocross scoring. Courses will likely be a little shorter. You can expect a really fun mix of off-road with a little more of the motocross pace/ urgency added in. Enduro races have three formats: Sprint enduros have multiple tests (loops) that you ride at least two times. Small groups take off at once (or by yourself), each test is timed separately. At the end of the day, times are added together and the lowest time wins. Continued on page 31....

Closed course enduros have one loop at least three miles that is ridden multiple times. An average speed is set for each loop and you get points for being late. At the end of the day, the rider with the lowest total wins. Long course enduros are greater than fifty miles. Scoring can be done a few different ways. Youth classes may run a different format based on difficulty, length and time so always check with the club/ promoter on this as well. The 2020 District 16 Off-Road series has changed a few classes so please reference the supplementary rules on our website. Points will continue to be in line with the AMA off road points structure. A racerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best twelve finishes will count towards year-end placing. Live Laps scoring system will be used at all 2020 off-road events. If you plan to race any races in this series, please go on to livelaps.com and make your rider profile/ update if you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t already have one. Please fill out all info including your AMA number to speed up your sign up time. All the events pay points towards year-end awards and recognition. These are often great events for newer riders with some trail experience all the way to the fastest of off-road racers. The challenges of the trail are often reasonable and meant to make it a fun day for

everyone. Best thing for 2020, all these events will have youth classes included, so bring the family! Again, go through the supplementary rules on the website, and let us know if you have any questions. This new championship series should be fantastic for all our riders.

Motocross is the most well known form of motorcycle racing... jumps, turns and close action is part of the trill.

Motocross, FAST action for all age riders!

otocross is the most popular form of amateur motorcycle racing and with classes for machines from 50 to 500cc, and riders from four years old to fifty plus, it's a sport for the whole family. Motocross races are run over closed courses utilizing natural terrain and man-made obstacles to test riders' skill and speed. Tracks include hills, jumps and tight turns. One of the most strenuous sports in the world, motocross is a rugged test for both rider and machine. Most motocross events consist of two heats, called motos, that are run for a prescribed period of time, or a set number of laps. Points are earned in each moto based on finishing position and the rider with the best total score is the overall winner. Motocross events in D16 kick off in April, and run through the end of October. Frequently there are multiple events per weekend. These events are all day activities. The practice sessions get started right away in the morning usually followed by a ridersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; meeting where schedules and other announcements are made. All the classes will usually run through their first motos before starting the final set. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a large selection of classes available, and a majority of the riders will qualify for multiple classes, often on the same motorcycle. Age divisions and engine size usually determines many of the classes, as well as AMA District 16 Event Guide 2020

experience levels. The C classes families and riders to make being for new riders while the A motocross events a weekend affair, classes are dominated by showing up the afternoon before the experienced riders and even local event and camping out. This is just professionals. one of the many aspects that make The Youth oriented classes require some sort of rider age for certain engine or machines, referred to as minis. You can get a feel for these class limits by looking over the membership application on the District web site, where you will also find links to both D16 rules and a link to the AMA rule book. You need to make sure a rider’s age will allow them to ride a particular size mini class bike. There are also limits for how large of a motorcycle riders can be on as they age, so again, become familiar with the rules. It is very common for Motocross, like all the racing offered in District 16 has

Premier cycle-training at the famous Road America

oad America has quickly become a mecca for motorcycle fans and enthusiasts, not only because the popular 4-mile, 14-turn facility hosts the exciting Superbike race every year. But also because once the Superbike weekend subsides, Road America also has its own motorcycle school. The Road America Motorcycle School (RAMS) is one of Wisconsin’s premier cycle-training facilities, educating two-wheel enthusiasts in a variety of courses. Endorsed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF), Road America’s Basic Rider Courses, Clinics and Dirt Bike School are taught by awardwinning rider coaches who have completed extensive training through the MSF and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT). Successful completion of the school's basic rider course enables participants to obtain a class M endorsement on their driver's license. Widely known as the largest private motorcycle training facility in Wisconsin,

Dual Sports - “FUN” on/off road riding in beautiful settings

ual Sports are catching on in District 16, and in 2020 there are five of these fun events, kicking off in June. To participate in a Dual Sport event you first need to be of legal driving age and have a motorcycle that is “technically” street legal. We say technically, because of the wide array of motorcycles that can be used at these events. There are the popular on/ off road bikes offered by most of the manufacturers, bikes that you would swear just don’t belong off-road... like the 1000cc plus adventure style bikes, and then converted “dirt” bikes. Bottom line, the bike has to have a license plate, meet maximum noise requirements, and have lights... semiknobby tires are a very good idea, but not always needed. Each ride is a little different, and if you are questioning your bike’s set-up, a call to the sponsoring club is a good idea. Dual Sport events often cover a hundred plus miles per day, and combine some road riding, gravel/ fire roads, and then some challenging off road trails. Usually the most challenging sections have optional routes, allowing the less “off-road” style bikes and less experienced riders to still have a great time by choosing their level of difficulty. These events are non-competitive, fun rides where rider camaraderie is at its highest. While riding in an event, you’ll find groups frequently stopped trailside taking photos, grabbing a bite to eat, or discussing an adventure they just experienced. The participants will be from all aspects of our sport; racers, experienced trail riders and newbies to off-road riding. Everyone comes for the same reason... to have a good time, and get in

some great riding. Give one of the event promoters a call, then come out and do some riding. Tip: Look into registering for these events really early - most of them sell out in a matter of hours once on-line registration opens. They are that well liked.

Wisconsin Off-Road Motorcycle Trails This listing describes more than 750 miles of trails available for offhighway motorcycle (OHM) riding. Below is a brief explanation of the trail where it is available. There can be some confusion as to what portions of a trail may be open to motorcycles. Some trails are open to street-licensed OHMs but not OHMs that cannot be registered by the Department of Transportation for use on public roads. These OHMs are called "limited use off-highway motorcycles" and are commonly referred to as dirt bikes. This list is intended to give you a feel for the opportunities, please research any destination you intend to go to for hours, potential changes in access and conditions. Wolf River State Trail - Forest Cnty 715-478-3476 Description: 14 Miles. Rail trail connects to the city of Crandon streets so one may access the trail through the city. Cross-country riding on forest and town roads is prohibited. ATVs are allowed during winter months but the trail is an active snowmobile trail. OHMs not allowed on the trail in Langlade County. Nicolet State Trail - Forest County 715-478-3476 Description: 32 Mile Rail trail. In Forest County there are trail heads for parking and loading/ unloading in Wabeno, Laona and off County Highway G in Cavour; access also available at road crossings. OHMs are not allowed on the Nicolet State Trail in Oconto and Florence counties. Chequamegon-Nicolet Nat Forest: Dead Horse Run Trail 715-748-4875 Description: Open May 1 to March 14 Miles: 56, Limited use OHMs allowed Flambeau Motorized Trail System Miles: 74, Limited use OHMs allowed Medford-Park Falls District Perkinstown Motorized Trail Description: 20 Miles, This two-way trail is developed for ATV/UTVs 65-inches or less and motorcycles (snowmobiles in the winter). The trail is ideal for visitors of all ages, riding abilities and experience levels. Rolling terrain, wooden bridges and a variety of woodlands and wetlands. The northern most point is located near the Chippewa Campground on the shores of Chequamegon Waters. A trailhead is also located on State Highway 64 that provides an information board with trail maps and toilet facilities. Eagle River - Florence District 715-479-2827 Lakewood - Laona District 715-276-6333 Description: Designated roads open to highway legal vehicles as displayed on the Forest Motor Vehicle Use Map. The District offers trails open to wheeled vehicles 50 inches or less in width, special use designations, and seasonal use designations.

Cheese Country Trail - Iowa, Lafayette, Green Counties 608-574-2911 Description: Rail trail that goes from Mineral Point (Iowa County) to Darlington (Lafayette Co.) to Monroe (Green Co.). The trail surface is relatively flat but passes through scenic terrain. Miles: 47, Limited use OHMs allowed

Knobby Ridge - Clark County 715-743-5148 Description: Singletrack off-highway motorcycle trail. Miles: 6, OHMs allowed

Pecatonica State Trail - Lafayette County 608-776-5706 Description: Rail trail that goes from Belmont to Calamine. Miles: 10, Limited use OHMs allowed

Dyracuse - Adams County 715-325-8014 Description: OHM/ATV trails, motocross & supercross tracks. Miles: 10, Limited use OHMs allowed

Riverview ATV Park - Kewaunee County 920-388-0444 Description: The Riverview ATV Park is located adjacent to the county landfill, just off of County Highway C. This park has a hill climb area, intense use challenge course, picnic areas and restrooms. Miles: 20, Limited use OHMs allowed

Richard Bong State Recreation Area - Kenosha County 262-878-5600 Description: The special use zone at Richard Bong SRA has nearly 8 miles of off-highway motorcycle trails (6.4 shared with ATV/UTV trails and 1.4 singletrack). Miles: 8, Limited use OHMs allowed

ATV Trail - Forest County 715-478-3475 Description: Public ATV trail located on old logging roads which are also open to dirt bikes, snowmobiles, hikers, bikers, skiers and many other recreationists. Miles: 8, Limited use OHMs allowed

Jackson County ATV and Singletrack Motorcycle Trails and Crawford Hills ATV/ Motorcycle Park 715-284-8475 Description: Singletrack trail is one-way. The Crawford Hills ATV/Motorcycle Park is located at the center of the trail system and connects to Jackson County OHM singletrack trails. Miles: 118 total (92 shared with ATVs, 26 singletrack), Limited use OHMs are not allowed on ATV trails, but they are allowed on the 26 miles of singletrack trail.

ATV Area - Wood County 715-421-8422 Description: The Wood County ATV Area is located on 400 acres of county forest land with 10 miles of ATV trail. It is 3 miles west of Port Edwards on State Highway 54. offers many trail riding opportunities. An ORV is a vehicle built primarily for off-road recreation. There are different types of ORVs, including motorcycles, ATVs and route vehicles. In the Upper Peninsula, it is legal for ORVs to operate on the ORV Trail / Route system, frozen surface of public waters and state forest roads (unless posted closed to ORVs).
