District 16 Banquet. As 2014 comes to an end we have released the banquet ticket order form, published in this issue on page 57. You can also find a copy on the our web site at amadistrict16.com. Again, the Kalahari will have special room rates available, while they last, or until October 8th. Don’t miss this great annual event! From the Back of the Pack By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman I missed getting a piece in last month’s issue. It has been an incredibly busy summer. July had so many things happening in motorcycling. The big Pro MX show came to Millville in July. This is one of the highlights of my year. The Hillclimb group was getting set for the National in Bay City. The Off-road contingent has a full schedule. On top of all of this there was our Ride 4 Rights Road ride to lay out. It takes a ton of time to get everything in place for these events. Now that things have settled down I thought it was time to type a few words. While that sounds fairly simple if you saw my pick and peck typing you would know this is a major undertaking. District business has been fairly routine so far this year. We do have a new web page up and on line. It is much less busy and easier to navigate. An added plus is that it is much more mobile friendly. If you haven’t checked it out be sure to do so. We are working on this season’s year-end awards and making preparations for each of the awards presentation ceremonies. We will get the details for each presentation on the website soon. We have spent some time ironing out a few issues with the off-road events. It is important for all of competitors to be aware of the On The Cover: District 16’s Elijah Gorecki on July 23rd at the I-94 Supercross in Portage WI. Photo by Cycle USA

Announcements, personal stuff, and.... scoring protest period. There is a 30 minute time period after the scores are posted. This is the only time in which results can be changed. Any discrepancies or problems have to be protested or raised during the protest period. The AMA has created a referee training program online so we are looking to move towards every event having a certified referee in the future. This should further improve the quality and consistency of all of our D23 events. I had the opportunity to attend the National in Bay City. It was the first Hillclimb I have seen, and I was amazed to say the least. The Hill was 500 feet of steep dirt that looked extremely intimidating. One of our climbers Logan Cipala set a new hill record, taking almost a full second off the old record. It was also incredible watching the youth riders put 65cc machines over the top. Karen Umphress our treasurer, and government relations person has been chosen by the AMA to give a presentation on women and dirt bikes at the AMA National Convention this fall. Karen is an active rider, one of off-road MSF instructors and she also works for NOVACC. She is well versed in riding but especially well versed in the politics that we continually fight to keep our right to ride. I would also like to congratulate all or racers that qualified and raced at the Loretta Lynn’s championship. There were a good 20 plus racers from the area that made the trek. Reports said it was a great year for racing there as the weather was not near as hot and humid as usual. As a final note, this was the weekend that Millville’s Jeremy Martin won the 250cc Pro National Motocross title. Congratulations to another great Minnesota racer. Jeremy along with Belle Plaine’s Ryan Dungey, and Colorado’s Eli Tomac will be racing for the Red, White, and Blue at the Motocross of Nations. Older brother Alex Martin will be riding for Team Puerto Rico at the MXoN. What an honor to have three D23 racers in the most prestigious race of the year. We still have a full schedule of events for the next couple of months. I hope to see you on the track or trails at one of these events. Mike

Dickeyville Trials Weekend Dickeyville, Wisconsin - August 2/3 By Kevin Huber

T

he August 2nd and 3rd Wisconsin Observed Trials Association Dickeyville event is one of the unique venues on their schedule. Half of the sections utilize a slate bottom creek that is very easy for spectators to view. Riders also get a chance to ride up a waterfall, which always impresses the crowd. The other half of the sections were in the woods and utilized hills, trees and a few rocks. These sections provided their own challenges. The recent stretch of dry weather caused the soil to become very loose, and riders had to work hard to keep the bikes from slipping out from under them while traversing the hills. Another unique aspect of this year’s event was Homer Weber showing up with his Farmall tractor that is powered by a Honda 500cc motorcycle engine. He was pulling a homemade trailer hauling his trials bike. Saturday night many riders camped in the pits and discussed the day’s riding experiences. The evening included corn on the cob roasted over the campfire. The riders took

advantage of sunny weather to guide their bikes through the course. The weekend found Lukas Gillespie in fine form, taking the top spot in the Champ class both days. Bryan Moenssen continues to shine in the Expert class, also taking both days. Continuing the trend, Advanced class Ryan Rivenburgh, Intermediate class Mitch Littlefield, and Vintage class Skip Check finished on top both days. In the Novice class, Jay Parmeter won Saturday and Jacob Bauer topped the class on Sunday. Lena Trials Just Right Lena, Illinois - August 10 By Liz Jeffries

I

t was a bright sunny August Sunday, and the NITRO crew was at Lena IL for round six of the 2014 season. A mix of forest, creeks and ravines, Lena’s grounds seemed an abundance of fun terrain for the riders. The ground proved to have amazing traction and the loop, a twisty single track, had been meticulously cleaned and groomed by the Chicagoland Dual Sport Riders club along with other members of NITRO and the trials community. The trialsmasters other helpers had done an excellent job, taking out all the dangerous obstacles and leaving just a few logs and sticks to make it fun without being overly scary or dangerous for novice or new riders. The day before the organizers had held a ‘fun day’, a day for riders of every discipline to come out and just play on the trails. Several trials riders volunteered their time and taught classes, allowing riders to learn new skills or sharpen those that they knew. It also gave riders from other dirt bike disciplines a chance to see what trials was about. The turnout was great, with a large crowd of all types of bikes, and from the smiles it seemed

that everyone was having a blast. Then it was Sunday, contest time! Fiftyone riders had stayed to join the ranks of the competitors, and the energy was high as they gathered for the rider’s meeting. After a great greeting from NITRO President Ralph Littlefield, the riders kicked their bikes to life and headed out! The eight sections that the trialsmasters had set up were perfect. They had given the competitors a mix of almost everything Lena’s terrain had to offer. It was obvious they had worked hard to make sections that were fun without being too easy. The novice lines hit that perfect balance: technical and tricky without being overly hard or dangerous. The other lines seemed to be the same, with off camber logs and turns and tricky uphill climbs out of the creeks requiring riders to summon all their best skills to clean. Even late in the day as some of the sections were becoming slicker, like the long uphill climb out of a creek, the increased challenge seemed to make the conquering of the section sweeter for those that made it. The best part of the day was of course the riders who came out. Molly Littlefield took second in her very first Youth competition,

proving that trials is a family sport as she joined older brothers Mitch and Luke in the field. The women showed up to play, with three in the Women’s class (won by Abby Fuegen), two in the novice class (with Annmarie Cross taking top honors), and Kailey Rivenburgh in the Advanced class taking third. Titto Nappi led the group of knobby/ enduro riders who tried out the day, and received a special shout out for helping a couple first timers find their way around, showing the heart of helping and camaraderie that makes this sport great. Camerer duplicated his come from behind performance in the 600cc 4 stroke class, this time with Jenner taking the first round lead with a 4.281 second time. Troy posted a 4.186 second time on his second ride for the win, with Peters slipping past Jenner into second with a 4.187 time. Camerer didn’t mess around in the 400cc Stock class, with a 4.384 second first round ride that stood up for the class win. McGurer was in third place behind Jacob Bell (4.371) and Andy Fortner in the 250cc class at the end of the first round, but carded a nice 4.328 run in second round action. Bell and Fortner couldn’t improve their times and had to settle for second and third. Joe didn’t waste any time in the Open Stock class, however, sailing his Honda over in 4.382 seconds on his first ride for the win. Ryan Williams ran a 4.403 second time for second place on his Honda, with KTM riding Nick Green third. Veteran and ex-pro Mike Pulver won both the Senior and Super Senior classes on his Honda. He took only one ride in the Senior class, his 4.139 second time holding up for the win. Andy Fortner was second in 4.255 seconds on his Kawasaki with Matt Peters third. Pulver also only needed one ride to take the Super Senior class. Harley riding Steve Shafer was second in 5.082 seconds. Cody Jenner set the overall Fast Time of the Day winner, his 4.0 second time on his KX500 winning the 600cc class. Jared McKay and Joe McGurer, also running Kawasakis were second and third. I-94 Series comes to Portage Portage, Wisconsin - July 23

O

nce a year, the crew from CMJ Raceway, working with everyone from the Lake Wisconsin ATV Association set up a new track for a one night show in Tomah, WI. The race is part of the popular Columbia County fair, so it all takes place in a tight area in front of nice, raised bleachers. This event is about racing to the riders, and a fun show and excitement for all the fairgoers. It is a fun, quick night for all involved. Qualifiers give riders extra time on the track, and starting line position later for the mains. Safe... but still intimidating to some, and quite impressive for the crowd coming to see the show the riders put on. The 65cc riders were second up, and on these smaller bikes, Justin Oehlhof was the only rider making the leap over this spectator jump. He immediately became a crowd favorite as the cheers echoed across the track with each lap. He grabbed the holeshot, and between the time saved over the double, and his extra speed on the rest of the track, he never had to look back. Behind him, there was plenty of good close racing that kept everyone’s attention as well. Finishing second in the ten rider class, Aiden McCormick did a good job holding off Talan Zollers who made the trip up with his family from Aurora, IL. After the last checkered flag has flown and even while trophies are still being passed out, the big equipment comes to life, and the track starts to vanish just as quick as it went up. By the time the lights go off, the grounds are flat once again, and the infield is set for the next day’s events, whatever they may be. Brisbin blazes Cambridge TT

In the +40 class, #97J Troy Brisbin makes his move to the outside to pass Ron Bystrom as they head for the finish line jump.

Cambridge, Minnesota - July 27 By Tim McBride

T

he AMA District 23 galaxy of flat track superstars presented by the North Central Dirt Track Association made their northern swing to the Norseman MC club grounds located in Cambridge MN. Long time flat track racer Troy Brisbin came out on top of an exciting race long dual with fellow old school competitor Ron Bystrom in the +40 class. The weather was perfect for half of the day anyway, as Mother Nature brought rain shortly after the heat races were contested, in effect ending the program with awards going to the heat race finishing positions. Larger classes with multiple heats were awarded by virtue of lap times. Brisbin and Bystrom raced during the Minnesota/ Wisconsin grassroots era of framers and four strokes. On this day however, both veterans were racing aboard the now familiar DTX’ed Hondas, only Brisbin’s choice of weapon came in the two stroke variety of a fire breathing Honda CR500 to Bystrom’s customary Honda 450cc four stroke machine. Their battle for the win was epic. Bystrom held the lead for several laps, but an obviously determined Brisbin eventually found a line where he could put the power of his CR500 to the ground and made an exciting pass as the duo crossed the high speed finish line jump. Rick Wascheck, Ryan Dean Einerwold, Tony

Hauer and Randy Thistle rounded out the field. “I saw some moisture on the outside line leading up the hill to the finish line jump,” explained Brisbin afterwards. “Everyone was running on the inside so I set up on the outside coming into the last corner. It took a couple tries, but I finally got a good drive and was able to get by him (Bystrom).” In the double-down category GNC Expert/ National #25 Kevin Anderson piloted his Diesel Minnesota/ Larsons Cycle sponsored 450 Honda to victory in the 450 and Open Semi Pro classes. The always consistent M3 Racing Factory supported Mac McGrew finished a strong second during both events. The four wheeled division saw Amanda Flanscha from Farmington MN win the Quad Women’s class. After a few laps of good racing Abi Skaudis slid past her sibling Shari Skaudis to finish second. 900 Entries at Schmit Memorial Millville, Minnesota - July 18 By Rolfe Otterness

O

nce again Spring Creek Motocross Park hosted the AMA National on Saturday and it was bracketed by the Donny Schmit race on Friday and the Pro Track Challenge on Sunday. A huge rider turnout on Friday, with about 900 entries total, made for stiff competition in all classes. Many out-state riders were on hand to give a try on the famous Spring Creek terrain. The Pro Track challenge featured most of the pro sections to better replicate the course as tackled by the professional riders on Saturday, but did not run the amateurs all the way up Mount Martin as the downhill might have been a bit much for some riders. Wyatt McGrath and Gage Steberg dominated their classes at the Donny Schmit Memorial Amateur race, each rider running up six straight moto wins in the various mini classes. Steberg was ripping up the big track to take the 65cc 7-11 class and the 65cc 10-11 class in addition to the 85cc 911 motos. On the Pee Wee track, McGrath crushed ‘em in the 50cc Oil Injected and Multi Speed classes plus 50cc Premix. Checking out the Donny Schmit Memorial’s action on the Spring Creek Pee Wee track, you could see Wyatt McGrath jump into the early lead in moto one of the 50cc

Crossroads’ D17 Bonus race Mason, Illinois - August 3 By James Pinckard

C

rossroads MX hosted Round five of the Fly Showdown Series along with a District 17 Bonus points race the first Sunday of August. After a week filled with rain the Crossroads crew did an outstanding job with the track for the Sunday race, in fact I think the track was the best it has been all year! Riders were on hand in search of the Fly Series points, and the District 17 bonus points. Either way all the riders were there for one reason to race, and they did so on a great track! It is always great to see new riders at the races. Not just riders who have never been there but riders that either are attending their first race or those who just started racing this year. One such rider is Honda rider Grant Shelton. Grant started racing this year, “I rode and played other sports and just wanted to do motocross. I love it.” Shelton bought a Honda 150 that put him in the tough SuperMini class. Shelton brought his whole family with him to the track as well as a friend who was having his first race ever! In the SuperMini moto one Yamaha rider Dane Folsom was on the pipe and took the moto win. Kawasaki rider Jacob Mcgee finished second with KTM’s Carter Cree-

Suzuki rider Bryce Buckles finished second both motos with Yamaha rider Corey White third. In the 250B class Kawasaki rider Brayden Copeland looked great and fought his way to win both motos. The #100 Travis Walker put in a great ride Grant Shelton in his first year racing. and is improving with each race. Today Walker don third. Shelton had better luck this race and finished fourth for the moto and overall. “My goal is to get a trophy and I have been so close.” There were two first time racers in the Vintage class; Matthew Ellermets and Basil Aruin. Both Yamaha riders have done hare scrambles for district 17 but never motocross. Yamaha rider Clint Foster who rides the same class talked them into coming and at the end of the day both riders said they had a great time and for sure will be back! In the Vintage class Kawasaki rider Michael Kistler showed them how it was done and took his big KX500 to both moto wins and the overall. Ellermets finished second both motos and took second overall. Third both motos and overall went to Suzuki rider Harley Kunkel. Copeland won the 250A and 250B classes. How? The brothers were on fire this day! Blake Copeland won the overall in the Open A and Brayden won the

Going over the finish line jump he flipped down the track in a crazy crash. The crew ran to him thinking he was really hurt but Monk got up and finished fourth. Kawasaki rider Ryan George took the lead and went on to win the moto, along the way clearing the uphill triple every lap. Husky rider Shawn Kelly finished second with Kawasaki rider William Grothaus third. In the second moto Monk and George were locked in a great battle. Monk wanted to prove his crash in the first moto should have been a moto win, and win he did giving him second overall for the day. George finished second and took the overall. Ferderer Tops Hill City HS Hill City, Minnesota - August 3 By Keith McKenna

T

Overall race winner Nate Ferderer snaking his way through the woods.

he D23 Hare Scrambles race at Echo Valley MX Park could be referred as the race that “almost wasn’t”. When the Range Riders trail crew arrived at the assigned location in Hill City MN to work on the trails nine days prior to the event, they were confronted with an insurmountable obstacle that was deemed too large to overcome. With nine days till race day, the decision to cancel the event or move it to a new location had to be made on the spot. A quick phone call to the owners of the land that the Echo Valley MX Park is located on landed a new race location, and a lot of work that needed to be completed, post-haste. A race course needed to be laid out, trail cut, ribboned and arrowed. E-mails and a social media marketing blitz to inform racers of the change in venue. The crew got to work, and what they were able to pull together was nothing short of amazing and inspiring! An eight mile course consisting of a great motocross track, fast grass track and tight off-camber single-track with plenty of elevation changes. There were plenty of boulders dotting the course, and to give the riders a heads-up when approaching the mineral deposits the workers spray painted them fluorescent orange. There was one area that I heard referred to as the Pumpkin Patch as that was how it appeared when approaching the rock garden. First race to the line was the Macro and Micro class. In the Macro class #699 Ryanne Artmann took it to the boys with a victory on her KTM. It looked early like Travis Illies would be

the victor, but on lap three the bike sputtered to a stop. That relegated Illies to third place with #455 of Trey Bremer to clutch Silver. It was a good day for the girls as another KTM found its rider at the top of the podium in the Micro class, with Allison Siebenaler leading every lap and the only rider to get in five laps. Looks like the boys better be stepping up their game, cause the ladies are lookin to rumble! Second place was the Honda CRF50 of Lucas McCoy. Maybe I have been living under a rock. In the Premier class, there’s this kid named Devon Jirik. I don’t recall hearing his name before this season, but I tell ya, when he is on the line, he has to be a favorite for the win. When coming through the woods he looks like a “mini Casselli”! Jarrett Loeqering is a another speedster in the woods, but he didn’t have an answer for Jirik today. They were the only Premier riders to clock five laps on the tight rocky conditions. Number three finisher Dalton Kittock narrowly missed getting a fifth lap. In the Vintage class, entries were up 300%! There was a mix of old iron with asian and european flavors. Present were Honda XR twin shocks, Yamaha’s early YZ Monoshocks and I believe a vintage Husky. Race winner Jason Goth looked like he and his Honda XR200 would be taken to the cleaners as they were exiting the moto track and into the woods, but by the end of the race, Goth was the only rider to be granted a fourth lap. Apparently the drum brakes of second place Jason McCoy’s 1979 Yamaha YZ250 had a hard time coping with the hills of the track. Jay Tommerdahl scored the final place in victory circle. Women’s class winner, the 2013 class champ, Yamaha mounted #911 Mary Schreiner placed twelfth overall in the C class, only about 40 seconds from breaking the top ten. When Vet-B rider Derek Otteson had his “Mojo Wurkin”! Otteson the was the only rider in class to clock five laps. Tony Blake scored Silver on his Yamaha. In the 250B class, Minnesota MX’er Tommy Coon made a short drive here to give the off-road festivities a try. Tommy said it was a real eye opener, about two miles in. He said that he is used to sprinting, so pacing yourself is not what he can practice if he wants to win a moto, but that it is the name of the game in a two hour race. Coon realized that “Bark Busters” are an apt name for something he was wishing he had today. In any event, he pressed on and ended up pulling a third place finish in a very competitive class, gaining a lot of respect for the off-road racers. The two riders to finish ahead of him were long term off-road competitors. The first place rider was Mark Schreiner with young up and comer Gary Stoudt grabbing the second. For the first two laps of the Senior A (40+) race, second place finisher Robert Lane III kept the eventual winner in sight.

Jason McCoy rockin the vintage iron en-route to a second place finish in the Vintage class.

The first place finisher being KTM #16 Ralph Feld, but on lap three Feld turned up the Austrian power and left Lane in a sticky wicket for the remainder of the race. Sounded like Lane was really enjoying the event though. Every time he came by he would be heard muttering that the rocks were painted to look like pumpkins but they didn’t taste at all like any garden variety gourd. In the end, Lane finished second with Jamie Bauer third and Dave Voss wheeling home in fourth. In Open-A racing, the #25 KTM has helped Garrett Hansen to a perfect score on the year, leaving all comers to grapple for left overs. Second place Curt Plzak vowed not to make it easy for the Garrett express to arrive at the station on point, but try as he might, Plzak just couldn’t score the gold. Tony Duetsch was able to salvage third. In the 250A class, Peter Nickel is pretty consistently up near the top of the leaderboard, with said consistency being a sure way to the year-end gold, but today wasn’t his day to shine. He started out super strong, leading the first two laps by a comfortable margin. Lap three, not so comfortable, but still leading by 18 seconds. Lap four he fell to third place while caught in the throws of suspected food poisoning. This was his last

lap as he was in such discomfort that he couldn’t carry on. Too bad his day ended early, as he looked certain for the win. In the AA class Kyle Nelson and Matt Stavish were noticeably absent from the start line, but current District 23 AA points leader and runner-up were in attendance and looking for a battle royale. Dylan Debel was in the not so familiar position of being in fifth place at the end of lap one, and current points leader Nate Ferderer was third. Coming into an area known as the “Sandpit” there was a re-route for the AA, A and B riders. It seemed that Ferderer, Peter Graves and Debel were the only ones to understand that there was a cut-off, so they stayed the course, while the much of the field took the shorter C course. Well, Ferderer, Graves and Debel soon encountered a plethora of slower riders. With the single-track being so tight, passing was an arduous task. Many riders were said to be unwilling to pull over to let the faster riders past. Once clear of the mistaken riders, the two front runners set to having an epic tussle that would last the entirety of the race. Debel knew that with all of the swapping back and fourth for the lead, that the glory was going to be decided on the moto track on the last lap. Of the two front runners, Debel was the bigger rider and on the

smaller bike. Horsepower would come into play it would seem... and so it did. On the last lap, Debel was riding like his life depended on it. He was slicing through the woods, trying to build a cushion that would help him maintain the point once they exited the woods. Debel had a 4-5 second advantage when they emerged from the woods. It was “Do or Die” time for both riders. Debel, a bigger rider on a 250cc four stroke against a lighter Ferderer on a 300cc two stroke proved to be the decider

as Ferderer was able to power up the steel rolling hills that make up the motocross course’s last section. At the line it was Ferderer by two seconds, this after two hours, seven minutes and fiftyfive seconds of 100% effort and concentration. After the race, competitors could be heard remarking that the course and the race were nothing short of amazing. The Range Riders Motorcycle Club really hit one out of the park with the miracle that they pulled off in such a short time.

Megacross gets a Facelift

Close racing... look close, there are three 125cc class rider dragging bars there. Travis Ward on the inside (Honda), Cody Barnes in the middle and #26 Austin Beaty.

egacross was back in action with a new track layout that is constantly being tweaked right now. Tonight’s race was a rain date make-up of round 5. It also had the added excitement of several endurocross classes to make things interesting. The new track setup is laying out nicely, and being tweaked with the riders’ feedback. It’s extremely challenging to make up a new track out of thin air, and even from the previous race things had changed. The night before had heavy rains once again so all the time before the race was spent scraping the mud down and getting it ready to go. It didn’t stop the races from happening, only a massive flood will hold back a Megacross race. They are there to run races, and good one at that. Coming out strong for the first race of the night was 125cc with Mason Schuhler leading with Cody Barnes and Travis Ward right behind him as they went into the second tight turn. Barnes shot outside into the whoops 26

section to take over the lead with Ward right behind him as they moved into the back section of the track. Barnes and Ward battled up front while Austin Beaty was looking to move up, finally getting it coming towards the finish area to take over third. The battle was finally ended by the checkered flag with Barnes taking the win followed up by Ward and Beaty. 250A was on the track shortly after with a nice battle in store for the crowd as well. The gates dropped with Tom Hofmaster getting the holeshot with Jacob Wever and Talan Hansen all

bunched up heading into the second turn. Logan Skaggs was on the charge over the new table top section in the middle of the track, first taking third from Hansen. Three turns later he passed Wever taking the inside of the turn before the finish line area. Skaggs was unable to reel in Hofmaster as he hit the finish line one final time for the win. Wever held onto third after a really fierce race. 14-24B always has a bunch of fast riders willing to push it to the limits. Hitting the first turn Colton Beard got a great jump to the front followed closely by Austin Beaty and Nick Manning. They went three wide into the whoops with Beard staying out front. Coming around to put the first lap in the books, Jordan Mackiewicz was on a mission after a bad start, moving up to third. Mackiewicz was trying every line to get up front and finally grabbed an inside on Beaty and made it into second. With time running out he made the push, but was unable to advance as Beard took the big win. Beaty held on for third. 250C packed the line tonight with nineteen riders all gunning into the first turn for the lead. Peyton Hansen got out front coming into the second turn with riders all around him. Trevor Nelson was in second and Sam Hammelman third as they headed into the whoops. Justin Carr capitalized on the traffic, pushing his Kawasaki up to third as Nelson took over first. Dylan Broll was making moves from the middle of the pack to creep up on Hansen and put on the presThe Endurocross classes run on a separate obstacle filled layout - all have a good time and spectators love it.

sure. On the white flag lap Broll found his line and snagged third. Nelson rode smooth and consistent to cross the line for the win, leaving Hammelman in second and Broll third. It was a great night out at Megacross with the Endurocross one more twist to keep things interesting. With everyone getting used to the new track it was nothing short of exciting. Things will continue to get even better with the new layout getting more refined. Make sure to make it out before the season winds down! Williams tops Crystal Falls Crystal Falls, Michigan - August 10 By Cody Wills

T

he August race in Crystal Falls is always a great one, in part because you can count on perfect crisp northern Michigan weather. Cool deal with this weekend is that the town of Crystal Falls hosts a weekend called Fungus Fest which may sound weird, but it brings in a lot of people for a town party and parade which then brings in a big crowd to watch the high flying action at Valley Raceway. Also, did I mention this is a Pro Am weekend to boot! After a full day of racing Saturday, the big Pro-Am day arrived on Sunday. When the racing kicked off, the Women’s class quickly became one of the battles to watch. Amanda Belonga got out front early in the first moto but was quickly challenged by Kendra Randrup. They went back and forth on the track, in one section of the track Belonga would use the KTM 250f power to her advantage over Randrup’s KTM 125, but in other sections Randrup used her jumping abilities to close the gap. With just a few corners to go Randrup closed the door and carried momentum through the final few corners to take the win at the last second. Moto two had Belonga out front again but it didn’t take long for Randrup’s confidence from moto one to show as she passed early and held on for the win and overall. Belonga picked up second and Mariah Lacount grabbed third.

Open A was the first Pro Am class of the day and it had a lot of spectators watching. Hunter Sayles made the jump to A class after returning home from Loretta’s in the Schoolboy classes. Hunter has had the speed for a while to be in the A classes and now he was there to give it a shot. Getting out front early was Christopher Erko, and he really put in some fast laps. Sayles and Cody Williams were outside the top five. Making moves quick, Sayles would eventually work past Erko who started to make a few mistakes. Williams then worked past Erko. Everyone wondered if Williams could close in. At times he would, but Sayles would get it back, and eventually Sayles went on to win his first ever A class moto. Williams and Erko rounded out the top three. In moto two Erko was out front again and in a matter of laps Williams moved to the lead. Sayles was next to slip past Erko.

Cody Williams dominated the A classes all weekend.

Hunter Sayles won his first ever A class moto in his debut... pretty cool.

Williams showed his experience in saving his speed as the day went on and it helped him get the overall as he took the all important second moto win. The Sportsman’s class showcased the increase in speed that Kyle Ahola has de-

ting a moto win. All and all you could not have asked for a better weekend of racing with the balmy temps and the track prepped to perfection, it made for an unforgettable weekend for all the racers.

Riding in a combined race, #53 Jay Kidd (+50 winner) and Mike Renkas (+40) battled in both motos.

veloped over the past year. Ahola holeshoted both motos and held solid throughout each of them. Ahola’s speed may have over shadowed the increase in speed that Austin Childers has shown this season as well, as he challenged Ahola in the first moto. Casey Collegmon was in the mix in both motos scoring a second in moto two but had some staying up right trouble in the first. Ahola went 1-1 and Childers 2-3, good enough for second overall. This is a good class at this time of season to gage the riders for next season, you get a mix of both 250 and Open B riders, and from this neck of the woods these three will be the ones to watch. The Mini 65 class had a couple standouts in it. Dawson Lincoln got out front early in moto one with Luke Clark close behind. Lincoln put a little gap on Clark,

but after having some trouble in the front section Lincoln was forced to ditch his goggles and Clark was able to capitalize on it, and take the moto win. Moto two was much the same except this time Lincoln kept his clear vision and with that kept the lead to take the win and overall. Clark locked down second overall with a second in that moto. Staying solid in third place in both motos was Luke Vanlyssel, keeping those top two in his sights. The man on the day was Cody Williams, winning both Open and 250A classes. With the town of Crystal Falls Fungus Fest going on the crew at Valley Raceway decided to name the top finishing A rider The Shiitake King and had a crowning ceremony. The other rider to talk about was the impressive first ride of Hunter Sayles, finishing second in both classes and get-

Aztalan Hosts 350 in August Lake Mills, Wisconsin - August 10 By Dave Hollub

A

s the summer wears on the racing at Aztalan keeps heating up, and August brought 350 entries out for a day of action packed motos. In addition to racing, Aztalan was set to honor a longtime member Jason Warner who passed away in late July. Owen Blakey was in charge of 50cc Junior today as he grabbed the moto one holeshot. Riley Busse managed to slip into the lead on lap one but washed his front wheel out in the scoring area, going down long enough to let Blakey back into the lead. Once back out front Blakey never looked back. Carson Syverson was in third until he bobbled on lap three leaving Jayden Adams and Lane Rhyme room to slip past. In moto two Blakey again rounded the holeshot out front with Busse close behind, and despite running hard Busse couldn’t get around. Rhyme slipped into third, past Syverson on the white flag lap. Blakey, “This was a fun day. The second race I got the holeshot again and nobody passed me. The track is good, but a little muddy this race. I really like the corners but jumping is fun too. Thank you Rob at Rob’s Performance for working on my bike, and Midwest Electric.” Kevin Yde was first onto the track in the

first moto of Senior +45, with James Heilman right on his rear fender. Heilman took over the lead in the west end. Frank Weiss slipped past Yde soon after. Weiss was pushing a wheel in on Heilman on the white flag lap but was unable to make a pass before the checkers. Yde was out front again at the moto two holeshot, but this time as they came over the plateau Weiss was leading with Heilman less than a half bike back. Heilman moved into the lead by the barn and never looked back as he went on to the win. Yde was getting pressure for the third spot from Tom Ferguson and as lap two began Ferguson slipped past. Heilman’s perfect set of motos was good for the overall with Weiss second, and Ferguson (4/3) just edged out Yde (3/4) for third overall. In +30B/C Jeremy Braund had the jump at the gate but Justin Fluger had the inside line, stealing the holeshot at the corner. Fluger stayed out front with Braund in second and Joshua Pakenham third all moto. In moto two Fluger was again first around the holeshot but Joe Skodras passed him in the west end. Fluger went down before

the lap ended. Tom Ferguson and then Paul Molkentin to move into second and third. Tom Wolf was charging through the class after a bad start, and by his third trip over the plateau he was in position to challenge Molkentin for third. Wolf jammed a wheel in at each corner and finally made the pass midway through the final lap to claim third at the checkers. Wolf turned a bad moto two start into the overall with his 4/3 day while Braund at 2/7 was second and Molkentin (6/4) was third. Zach Wolf got the Open B moto one holeshot but before the lap ended both Jamison Duclos and Nate Knottnerus got around him. Wolf dropped into the middle of the pack and Ian Malinowski, Joshua Pakenham, and Bryce Telfer took advantage to move up. Telfer was on the move and jumped past Pakenham on their second time over the plateau. Duclos went down on the final lap shortly after being

passed by Knottnerus, and dropped to the back. Wolf came back in moto two with another holeshot and this time stayed out front to the finish. Eric Leach was running just ahead of Cody Richter, but Richter had his hands full holding off the hard pushing duo of Jeremy Smith and Knottnerus. Knottnerus moved up two spots on lap three and went to work on Leach, looking to claim second. On the final lap Knottnerus made the pass in the east end before the finish. Knottnerus took the overall with Leach (7/3) second and Smith (4/7) in third. Jade Wennlund and Sierra Dortch were bar to bar when Women’s class hit the first corner. Wennlund had the inside and edged Dortch wide at the corner. Dortch didn’t waste any time and was out front before they hit the west end and Alexa Duclos was in third. It took another lap before Duclos found enough room to slip past Wennlund and by that time Dortch had stretched enough lead to cruise to the win. Dortch got the jump in moto two and rounded the holeshot with a couple of bikes lead. Wennlund was next with Madyson Larsen and Duclos all poised to challenge. Duclos quickly moved into second with Wennlund third. Dawn Cox moved past Larsen at the plateau. Dortch was cruising out front but Duclos was charging hard, and as the white

flag came out she had closed within a couple bike lengths on Dortch. Once Dortch heard Duclos catching her she twisted the throttle and led to the finish. Dortch, “I was kind of tired from racing Open C, and then going straight to the Women’s gate, but once the race started I guess I just got into it. Jade got the first holeshot because she snuck inside me. I was riding faster and jumping faster than I have been this season and I was able to get a good lead so I was Heilman (43) and able to relax a little. I James Kurt Andrews (21) were got the second 1st and 2nd in +50 holeshot and I thought after the first moto I was going to be able to go a little easier and just keep the lead. Alexa surprised me because she was right there when all I heard was her 2 stroke coming up behind me. She was pretty close

at the end, but lucky for me I got by a couple lappers that kind of got in her way and held her up a little. I want to thank Spiderwebmxpics, Jason Donegan from Pro-Action Suspension, Sportland 2, my Mom and Stepdad, and Fly racing.”

Glenn Korn was 4th in +40

With thirty-one riders lined up in the gate for 250C it promised to be an exciting race. When the gate dropped it was a drag race down the straight between James Burd and Jake Garwood. Burd had the inside to take the holeshot, and he was still leading at the plateau but Garwood was setting up a pass that he finished in the barn section. Now Burd had his hands full with Craig Flancher looking for an opening to slip through. Flancher got around Burd in the west end and began running down Garwood. By the time they came past the start on lap three Flancher was out front, but Garwood was back in the lead as the white flag came out. Burd held off a challenge from Robert Snider to finish third. Garwood got the lead right away in moto

two and held on out front all the way to the checkers. Logan Telfer started in second with Snider, Colin Fosdal and Flancher right behind him. Flancher was on the move picking off Fosdal and then Snider before the next time over the plateau. Telfer and Flancher cruised to the finish. Garwood took the overall with a 1/1 day while Flancher (2/3) was second and Telfer (5/2) finished the podium. Today was also a day to honor Jason Warner, a longtime Aztalan member and District 16 competitor. During the intermission Warner’s son Braden Warner and close friend Taylor Strauss led a memorial parade lap with over 150 riders joining in. Strauss who considered Jason to be his motocross coach/ mentor as well as close friend paid his respects today by wearing Jason’s old racing gear. As the day came to an end Strauss talked about his experience, “I had an awesome day of racing with really good starts, found good lines, and managed to win three of four motos for two overalls. I definitely feel that I was not only wearing Jason’s gear but that he was right there with me, it was awesome, just a really good day. Having his gear on really helped me honor him today. It was sad doing the memorial lap but everybody got one last chance to show their respect for him. Braden wanted me to ride up front with him so I rode just behind him as we led. It was really good seeing everyone out there. Jason was an awesome guy, he was a guy I always looked up to and he taught me to ride. He was a great competitor and we all miss him a lot.” Strauss also thanked his Mom and Dad, PR2, Smith Optics, EVS, Jason in Spirit, Braden Warner, Pro Honda Oil, and Rob’s Performance. Once again Aztalan hosted a great day of action packed racing on a beautiful Wisconsin day. Thanks to everyone that came out as a racer, spectator, or

Motokazie’s Tomah SX Tomah, Wisconsin - July 26

A

s always, the 2014 Motokazie schedule of events is a full one, kicking off in April and running through early October. Part of this busy schedule is dedicated to their supercross racing. Nineteen rounds, many of them in Minnesota, but a couple of appearances in Iowa and one trip into Wisconsin offer riders plenty of opportunity to chase the series championships. The round arrives in late July at the annual Monroe County Fair held in Tomah. Brad Johnson finished fifth in the Pro class.

Bodie Callaway leads Nathan Blaschke and Dylan Siess in a mid-pack 65cc 7-9 battle.

This round draws both local riders that may only race once a year, as well as seasoned riders with familiar names, in and out of the series. A $1200 pro purse doesn’t hurt, and definitely played into the results of tonight’s racing. Racing in the finals kicked off with a combined Quad A/B race. Wisconsin’s Brian Kinczfogel made his way to the front right away and ran off for the win. Behind him, it took Luke Radunz a few laps to shake Lucas Manske for the B class win. Radunz, “It was awesome out there tonight. There were a few tacky corners but I got both of the triples down, hitting fourth gear hard and getting them clean most of the time. I try to hit all the Motokazie races, and have only missed one in the last three years, and that was to attend the national at Spring Creek.” In the 450C class, series regular Cody Wroe continued his winning ways. Wroe has had a near perfect season, winning at eight out of nine Motokazie SX events he’s raced so far this season. He jumped

out front with Iowa’s Tyler Sommer on his rear fender. The two were the only riders in the class to jump both big triples, and it quickly helped them pull away. Sommer kept Wroe honest, but never threatened after the opening lap. The fight for third was much closer, and went down to the final lap before the Cole Pietsch/ Joe Herber battle was decided. Pietsch, “The race went pretty good for me, finishing third. You have to be smart out there. It is pretty tight. I hit a few of these events every year, and this is one of the better tracks.”

Cooper Callaway finished second in the 65cc 10-11 class. CYCLE USA, September 2014

Herber, “I gave it all I could. I had a few good runs at him, and changed up my lines trying to get by. This is really different for me as I usually race the bigger motocross tracks. I got a lot of arm pump on this tighter track, and found it is harder to chase a rider down, but I had a ton of fun.” When the 250C class ran later in the evening, Wroe was again out front and gone. This time it was a close race for the next couple spots as Pietsch held second ahead of Sommer, Herber and Ethan Hubert. With two laps to go Sommer’s constant pushing on Pietsch paid off as Pietsch went off the track in the whoops and dropped back to third. They finished way, the same as they did in the Open C class. Sommer after the close race, “I Lacrosse, WI’s Lucas Manske got a bad start and fought all moto charged to second in Quad Open B. trying to get by him (Pietsch) for Wilkes back just a bit in second. Spy/ 100%/ second and I hit the triple and gained some Twin Air backed Krech, “Off the start I gave ground. I got by in the whoops, but then in it as much gas as I could to try and get in the last lap hit them in the wrong gear and front. I did all the jumps I could and tried to he almost got back past me. I like these stay on two wheels. I did a pretty good job races, they do a good job running them and with it all and ended up getting a first. was always around other riders and that was fun. I like the doubles.” Just off Wilkes’ rear fender most of the race was the top two 85cc 12-15 riders Sean Storkel and Cole Anderson. Despite constant pressure from Anderson, Storken held on for his class win, in front of a hometown crowd. Noah Miesen made the trip over from St Paul, MN a good one... leading each lap of the 65cc 7-9 class. “The race was really fun and the track was super nice. The whoops were hard though, but being out in front is always a lot of fun. I’d like to thank my dad, and Pro-Action for helping get my bike back together.” Behind Miesen, Riley Renner ran in second for the first two laps. Isaac Staige grabbed a handful of throttle out of the corner going into the whoops and used the extra speed to get past as they exited the section. Once in second those two ran close to the finish as Dylan Siess finished fourth. Finishing the night off was the Pro class, and they raised the bar as expected. There was very little passing, but the speed, big air, and talent the group showed kept the crowd’s attention just the same. Out front from start

to finish was Mattoon, IL’s Jace Owen. He led the way earlier in the day by tripling up an infield section that others to that point were not, and posted fast lap times throughout the evening. Minnesota’s Nick Jackson was also fast, but got bounced around off the line and Ryan Orres took over second in the first turn. Orres held a fast pace behind Owen, and while Jackson fought his way into third early, he never could close the gap as they finished. It was a fun, fast paced evening in front of the fairgrounds crowd. Just another event for the MotoKazie crew that put on a race just three days earlier in MN, and would be back for yet another in a week.

KTM mounted #294 Austin Pogreba rode mistake free to a seven minute win in the 250A class after a slow start. He used the first lap to get warmed up while running in fourth, then set about pulling the trigger. Dropping the three riders ahead of him on lap two, the KTM stalwart then rode fast and mistake free to a six minute plus victory over Kevin Plzak and the third place Honda of Brian Grote. So far this year, in the AA class, District 23’s premier off-road contest is a tight one, fraught with drama. At Stone Lake, GasGas mounted Nate Ferderer set about getting an early lead then using his head to maintain a comfortable margin for the win. Try as he might, last year’s champ Dylan Debel on his Honda CRF250 didn’t have the power to mount a challenge against the Ferderer. Debel was hammering the throttle so hard, working to get every last drop of speed out of the little engine on the Honda, but victory was not to be his. Big props to the engineers at Honda though. The way Debel had that piston flying and the valves floatin, that motor should have grenaded from the abuse, but alas, it held together just fine. While Debel was looking ahead for the top spot, Wisconsin's Jd Friebel was hunting down Debel to take over second place. At the checkered flag Friebel’s deficit to Debel was only four seconds with the #77 of Tim Nienow looking for a podium spot. In the end the order was Ferderer in first on his checkpointoffroad.com equipped GasGas 300, Debel in second and Friebel third. More Great LTM Racing Casey, Illinois - July 27 By James Pinckard

R

ound four of the Fly Racing Showdown Series was hosted by Lincoln Trail Motosports in Casey IL. After a near perfect day of riding Saturday on a great track with incredible weather, the quiet pits turned into ez-up races as a storm with near 70 mile an hour winds wreaked havoc. Along with the winds came strong rains. The LTM crew did a great job packing the track after practice Saturday. Sunday morning they went to work and by race time racing started the track was good to go. Good thing because the District 17 Fly Showdown riders came to battle. The classic track at LTM has seen its fair share of battles while hosting races for over the 35 years! Its great LTM gives us the chance to race the old Classic track as well as the Bomber, it’s like seeing an old friend. Open A and +25 Big St Charles/ Fly Honda rider Damon Gabbart was one of those riders who came to battle. “I have been off the bike for seven weeks because I got hurt at my regional. I’ve been riding the classic track for years and thought this would be a good time to return.” In the Open A first moto KTM rider

Michael Norris was screaming fast, taking the holeshot and leading from start to finish. Suzuki rider Cory Deadmond, a long time LTM regular rode strong for second. Gabbart in his first race back finished third with another long time LTM rider Keene Carver fourth. In the second moto Norris again took the moto win and overall. Deadmond put in another strong ride for second in the moto and overall. Carver finished third ahead of Gabbart. In the +25 class Gabbart came out swinging, taking the holeshot in the first moto with Deadmond hot on his heels. For the first laps Deadmond was all over Gabbart but a slip by Deadmond allowed Gabbart enough of a lead to take the moto win. Suzuki rider Mitchell Corbin was third. In the second moto Gabbart was not at the line. “My bike just will not run electrical I think.” When the second moto dropped Deadmond had the class under control and took the moto and overall wins. Corbin finished second and Kawasaki rider Aaron Carter finished third for the moto and overall. Chad Reed and Travis Pastrana were battling... no it was the #22 of Brayden Cox and #199 of Jace Neil in the 50cc 4-8 class. In the first moto it was the Honda of Noah Woodring who took the win with

Cox second and Neil third. In the second moto Wooding won as once again Cox finished second, holding off Neil. Fourth went to Kaiden Trigalet who was racing for his first time. With Kaiden were three family members who also race. That’s four racers for the Trigalet family! His big sister Sydney finished fourth in the Women’s class. Brother Chance finished second in the 14-15 and third in the 250B. His father Eric won +40. A great example that motocross is a family sport!

Mora Enduro Weekend

1968 Mora Enduro Champion Dale Greenwald with riders and friends at the Family Enduro.

Mora, Minnesota, July 26-27 By Danielle Artmann with historical contributions by Rex Greenwald Photos by Dan McCreight and Dan Flettre

I

t was reported that the bugs were absolutely horrible during the July work weekends that preceded the Mora Enduro. It was said that if you didn’t have bug spray and you got stuck out in the woods, you might not ever make it out! Well, I was armed with 100% (okay, 98.1%) Deet & I showed up, ready to work and spectate at my first ever Mora Enduro. I survived! Now… how about those racers? Temperatures were hot and steaming Saturday as racers of all ages arrived for the 1st Annual Mora Family Enduro. The first of its kind in District 23, the Family Enduro, Trail Bossed by Dan Banks, was just that, a chance for families who are new to off-road competition to learn how to compete and tackle an Enduro course. More importantly, it was a chance for families to have fun riding and competing together. Each rider had a time sheet and the Enduro was set up with secret checkpoints, and each loop had an emergency (tie breaker) check. Mileage markers were posted and there were also observation checks to complete the full Enduro experience. Thirty-six riders, beginners to seasoned veterans, moms, dads and kids, lined up four per row and made their starts one minute apart from each other, just like the regulars do on a Sunday. Most of them had their own personal sweepers to help along the way. “My fa-

vorite part of the ‘family’ enduro was riding with my Dad”, said Peewee class racer, Aundrea Artmann, when asked what she thought of the event. Another highlight of the event was the freezie pop break, which the kids enjoyed at a check about halfway through their first eight mile loop. The course included two loops, each approximately 8-10 miles and consisted of hills, sand, mud, rocks, single track, tight trees and open grass. The Peewee and Premier classes rode both loops and cov-

ered many of the same areas that the Cclass riders would be riding the next day. It was very impressive that these young riders were able to tackle the terrain and hills that some of the big guys would struggle with the next day. The Micro and Macro racers rode one loop and also tackled some difficult terrain. Riding his Honda CRF50, Lucas McCoy took first place in the Micro class, being the only rider who was able to complete the entire loop. Lucas’s dad, Jason said that he liked riding with his son from start to finish, and he was impressed to see how his son actually rode. Overall, it was a great event and it will be exciting to see how it grows in the years to come. Sunday’s Big Enduro racers were greeted with much more comfortable weather. The riders meeting was especially cool as everyone joined in the singing of the National Anthem, which was sung by 1968 Mora Enduro Champion, Dale Greenwald, who won that race while riding a Harley Davidson XLCH900 Sportster, 2-Up with one of his nephew’s friends riding along. The 60+ mile course (45 miles for C riders) was as challenging as any past Mora Enduro. But as Trail Boss, Rex Greenwald stated, “Mora also has some of the best trails in the state.” He adds, “… [But] around the next corner can be some of the

toughest trail with rocks, ruts, down and up hills.” So what makes Mora one of the tougher Enduros in District 23? Rex explains, “The trail sections are fairly long and intense, there really isn’t a break or let up of riding the terrain intensity. Just about the time you find your rhythm and pace, you are thrown into a whole different terrain and style.” When asked for his opinion of Sunday’s Enduro, Super Senior B rider, Paul Schommer wrote, “The Mora Enduro was very challenging due to the tight terrain and the greasiness of the soil [as well as] the timing of the resets. In the past, the 60 miles lasted six hours while this one was like five, and so the resets were pretty short for me. If it had been hotter or more wet, I’m not sure I would have been able to finish.” Schommer took 1st place in his class. There were a total of 110 participants, and of those, 52 finished the Enduro. Now in its 57th year, the Mora Enduro is

rich in history. Dale Greenwald has Trailed Bossed the event, alongside his family since 1997, followed by Todd Mathwig and family. “Back in its day, the Enduro started way down by Fish Lake (south of Mora) and ran way up by McGrath (20 miles north of Mora)… The whole course may have been somewhere about 150 ground miles”, according to Rex Greenwald. “There were no resets in the past, and the only way to make up time was on the roads between the sections. We used to put up the big arrows with shingle nails, and we only put a few arrows up. Course and land reading were as important as the riding, stopping and thinking over the situation before entering an area was typical. Being a pretty good mechanic and getting your motorcycle through the day was as big a challenge as the riding. Having brakes and/ or clutches that worked all day was rare. 100 to 150 riders may have started the event, and 10 or so would finish. The talk that the

Mora Enduro is tough is just not that true in comparison to its history. But it is a challenge, and most if not all of the participants will praise the efforts of the team that does the work to keep this trail system and a little of the Minnesota Enduro history alive. Every year Dale is there singing the national Anthem and working a checkpoint still, and this enthusiasm and desire is instilled in the current team putting the event on, and it will continue. Illini Series Opens at Sunset S Walnut, Illinois - August 10

unset Ridge welcomed riders and families back for the first District 17 motocross in what seems like way too long. Sure there’s been a bunch of racing at the track, but a regular district points race has not taken place since early May, and even that was a Pro-Am weekend. Adding to the anticipation, today also kicked off the revamped Illini Series that will have events following all across D17. This season marks the fifteenth since Sunset Ridge first began running races with District 17, and what a run it has been. Going from a rolling field to holding Ty Tyrrell topped both the Open and 250A classes. ATV Nationals, Loretta with hoses), to a sign-up process with elecLynn Qualifiers/ Regionals, an AMA Vintronic entry and scoring, to race operations, tage National this year and picking up the able to smoothly run numerous motos in AMA’s Motocross Organizer of the Year one day and get done early! rewarding, “The biggest challenge is working to make everyone happy, and Mother nature, with whom we have no control over!” The reward, “Watching people leave happy, and watching the riders literally grow up right in front of you.” We seen the entire Pistole family interacting with so many riders... you can tell this is their new, extended family. The smile on the their faces was truly telling when they thought of all these little kids that are now young adults, and still coming up to the sign-up window to begin their day, all excited to be there. It has been a great fifteen years, and everyone is excited about the future! After a great practice session, it was race time, and Eran Salzmann put his Suzuki out front in the +30B/C class right off the start. David Genung pushed him early but then went down in one of the deeper sand corners, dropping back. Roland Gomez took over second, and going into the third lap, Salzmann ran into problems of his own and fell back a couple spots. With Gomez leading, Salzmann went to work, quickly getting back into third, and a lap later passing Robert Wehn for second. Dana Curtin held fourth ahead of Robert Moody at the finish.

#719 Jordan Mackiewicz and Skyler Harkless had plenty of close racing in the 14-24 class.

After coming back and winning the second moto, Salzmann, “The first moto I got off to a good start and led for a couple laps before making a mistake. In this moto I got into the lead in the third corner and didn’t look back. I got some arm pump late and he (Gomez) almost got by me, but I held on to the checkered. I had a great time.” First moto winner Gomez shadowed Salzmann right to the finish for second overall. Jason Gerling had a rougher first moto but found his pace in the second outing for third. His 7-3 was good enough for third overall ahead of Curtin (4-7). Open C was big as would be expected, with twenty-seven riders. At only 13 years old, Ian Pistole is one of the younger riders in the class, but he didn’t let that show as he jumped into the lead right off the start, and simply ran away, leaving some good close racing behind. Derek Brueggert was in second early, but slowly slid back to sixth as others turned up the pace. Landen Noggle rode really well, getting into second early and holding off all challenges to the end. Dalton Hancher took his shots at Noggle, then as Ian Wilmington worked through the pack on his Suzuki, he eventually took over third, and chased Noggle. Nathan Rega kept himself in the mix the entire time, finishing fifth just ahead of Brueggert. Pistole and Noggle quickly took off in the top two spots in moto two, pulling away with each lap. Wilmington had a better start and moved into third quickly. Wilmington, “I’ve been having to work all day. No way can I make it easy on my52

self. I blew a shift off the start in the first moto and was buried in like twelfth place. That was a lot of work to get up to third. I got a better start this time, so it was a little easier. The track is perfect. Rough, and it makes you really ride as it should.” Rega rode well in fourth and had Hancher pushing him hard. Two laps in and Hancher found an opening to grab fourth. The two stayed tight to the end, finishing 4-5 in the overall as well. Orville Kline led early in the +55 class, and had a good race with Ken Petrillo. Kline gave up the lead for part of a lap, but then came back to win. In the second moto it was much the same, ending with Kline just ahead of Petrillo. The Open A class had a higher than usual, top ten payout as part of the Illini Series. Even with the long motos, and plenty of passing lines in the track, holeshots were crucial. The top five were all running very fast, and close enough in pace that it was anyone’s race to win. In the first moto Herrin, IL’s Michael Norris put his KTM through the first turns ahead of the others, and it paid off. He stretched a few bike lengths right away while Vaughn Mays stuck his front wheel a little too hard in a corner and let Justin Kelly sneak into second. Greg Braet had his hands full with Ty Tyrrell until the third lap when Tyrrell made a pass stick. Mays went after Kelly for the first two laps, then a charging Tyrrell inserted himself into the battle, and got around Mays. The next few laps seen everyone hold their own with Norris opening a small lead, and Indiana’s Sean Miller

moving up to sixth after a bad start. Mays and Norris had great jumps off the line in the second moto but as they went into turn three Kelly and Tyrrell pushed to the inside and the four all had to check up enough that Tyrrell came out in the lead. Kelly was second. Tyrrell, “This moto went a lot better than the first one. This time I moved to the front right away and stayed there. It is just so much easier riding in the front and out of the roost. The track is just stellar. Getting rough with a lot of lines - the more of that the better the racing is.” Tyrrell rode to the win. Mays made a pass on Kelly on the third lap that took two corners and the entire finish line whoop section to complete. Sean Miller again kept getting faster, and rode his way into fourth late in the moto. Norris struggled, and fell back to eighth. Kelly’s good rides (2-3) were perfect for second overall. Indiana’s Joshua Taylor owned the 85Sr class on his #333 Kawasaki. Winning both motos, he rode smart as Dawson Biermann kept him honest all the way, finishing 2-2. Andrew Mueller went 4-4 for third overall as Dawson Ryker finished third in the first moto, and Nick Harris was third in the second moto. Both third place finishers combined those motos with a DNF. John Greer went 5-5 for fourth overall ahead of Robert Lopez (7-6). John Perovic and Ewan Krisch were just as dominant in the fourteen rider 85Jr class, going 1-2 in both motos. Kash and Ryder Schnowske had a great two moto battle over third. Ryder (3-4) beat Kash in the first moto, but Kash (4-3) wouldn’t give up, and finished third in moto two for third overall. Andrew Truhlar led the 250B class into the second lap before Sam Tinkey came from fourth up into the lead. Rj Mackiewicz, Jordan Mackiewicz and Nicholas Hancher were all close through the first laps. Hancher climbed into second as Danielle West moved up, eventually into third. On the last lap, Tinkey slowed and dropped back to eighth as Hancher took the win ahead of Jordan Mackiewicz. Iowa’s Tinkey grabbed a big lead right off the start, and started to pull away in moto two. Truhlar was into second after slipping by Hancher. Truhlar, “the track is good, and I got a third place start and then into second. I rode well and ended up with the win when the guy that was leading dropped back.” Tinkey, wanting to not record good finishes and avoid getting bumped up to the A class, dropped back into the pack on the last lap once again. He did the same in the

Open B class motos after pulling away early. (sandbagging for the future?) Nicholas Hancher finished just behind Truhlar (6-1), and took the overall win with his 1-2 motos. West finished third again, as Colten Burk improved on his ninth place first moto to finish fourth. Thirteen riders were in the 125cc class, and they put on a great race. Not only was the racing close, but just the sound of these 125cc bikes on the track is exciting. Joey Sapienza got out front right away, but Gage Pace was stuck on him, and pushing hard. These two were fender to fender through the first couple laps, slightly gapping the others who were locked in quite a battle as well. Jarred Berggren, Jake Carlson, and Stuart Schwagerman were swapping positions, all looking for third place. Half way through the third lap, Pace made a move stick for the lead. Before the end of the same lap, Sapienza rerook the lead, and then held on to the end. Berggren finally locked up third as Schwagerman settled into fourth. In the second moto Pace took the lead, and made Sapienza work for the pass. They had a fantastic battle out front, while Berggren, Schwagerman and Ian Ibianskas put on a show for third. Up front, Pace held on for three laps before surrendering the lead. Pace, “I just started getting tired and couldn’t hold onto the lead any longer. It was a great race, and I put it all out there trying to win.” Big St Charles Motorsports backed Sapienza won the moto, making it a perfect 1-1 sweep for the day. Sapienza ,“ I got a good start but he (Pace) got by me in the first corner. I rode as hard as I could to get by him later in the race. Doing the big jump (the huge Holy Pistole Triple) helped some. It isn’t as easy as you would think. I’m hitting it fourth gear wide open on the 125, and just making it over the top. It is so cool though. I made some time there, and just tried to stay smooth on the rest of the track and got the win.” Berggren prevailed for third once again as Schwagerman and Ibianskas followed across the line, still fender to fender. 54

CYCLE USA, September 2014

Tim Filippi took the holeshot in the +40 class, and then did his best to hold off the late race charge from Chad Lillibridge. Pro-Action of IL/ Gieson Motorsports backed Filippi, “It was a good start for me, and everyone was sticking close. Near the end there he (Lillibridge) snuck past me but then he made a small mistake and I was close enough to get back in front and take the win. The track is deep, awesome. It is getting rough and really good. This is what I work for, racing.” The two were a bike length apart at the finish as Burton Lavens crossed in third ahead of Eran Salzmann and Tim Reaska. The second moto had the same two lead-

Norris led the first half of moto two before going down and dropping back. Tyrrell took over, and from there had Mays and Miller just glued to his rear wheel. The pace was very fast, and they were never more than a bike length apart right to the finish. Tyrrell took his second overall of the day as Mays finished second overall. Another exciting race by the day’s fastest riders! The racing ended late afternoon, and it almost felt too early. It was a great day. Perfect racing conditions and weather, and luckily we won’t have to wait long for the next race, there are several more events yet this fall, so don’t miss out.

Great Arkansaw Double-Header

250B on the line....

Xtreme Motorsports and the Richardson family present Malcom Gustafson with his new pit bike!

Arkansaw, Wisconsin - July 26/ 27 By Cody Wills

T

he annual July double header at Arkansaw Cycle Park was finally here. Getting there Thursday night is a must, you know, you have to start this weekend as early as possible! Friday’s open practice is ideal before the two days of racing. Mother Nature brought the right amount of rain Friday morning making for a great relaxing day of riding. By Friday night the pits were packed and the track was prepped for and exciting two days of racing. The 125Jr class kicked off an awesome start Saturday morning with some pretty intense battles. Out front quick was Andrew Swienton. Charging even harder be-

hind him was the battle of Mason Persha, Jacob Jesko and Jared Feucht. Swienton kept his Yamaha out front for about two laps before he got swallowed up by the group that was behind. Austin Nelson added himself to this now five rider battle. Nelson was a distant fifth on lap one and had made his way to third by the end. Swienton slipped back to second as Persha moved into the lead. It left the order at the finish; Persha, Swienton, Nelson, Jared Feucht and his brother Darren Feucht. Jesko went down with a lap to go, falling out of the mix. In moto two it was Persha getting out Brian Hoyt rode to a front, taking advan- solid second in +25B/C. tage of the better start. Swienton made a few mistakes and settled for a fifth as Persha picked up the overall with the 1-1 finishes. The consistant 3-3 scores for Nelson got him second overall. Swienton’s 2-5 picked him up third overall. Saturday’s Open A class was pretty stacked with some fast talent in the mix.

Moto one had Mike Bottolfson put his Yamaha into the lead with Colton Karl and Kyle Koosmann in tow. Throughout the moto Karl stayed on the rear wheel of Bottolfson and Koosmann not too far behind. Having some problems early, Jason Erdmann was on the gas to rebound for fifth. Karl challenged Bottolfson but it wasn’t enough, Bottolfson held on for the win. Moto two had Josh Marescalco pull the holeshot and hold on to it for almost a lap and a half before Karl got in to the lead. Bottolfson follow into second and Koosmann into third.

Awesome day at Berm Benders

Jesse James Jacabsen takes to the air in 65cc 7-9.

Mora, Minnesota - July 27 By Keith Mckenna

R

ound 7 of the 2014 Berm Benders Civil Series on July 27th turned out to be one of the best days of MX racing so far this year, although it didn’t look like it would be as the sun started peeking over the horizon on race day. Weather radar on the evening prior to the race promised to drop copious amounts of rain on the facility. The crew worked feverishly to prep the track and seal it up before the storm came. Most of the track was sealed to get the water to run off when the winds whipped up and the rain and hail came, leaving the pit area looking like a shallow lake, and putting a damper on the plans of the assembled patrons that arrived earlier in the day to practice. Not deterred, as the sun rose the crew got to work to get the track ready. Racers must have assumed that the racing would be either cancelled or would have been held in quagmire conditions. Turn-out was light and that was too bad. For the racers that did show up, they were treated to amazing conditions. The track was tacky and fast, with multiple lines through the corners. AMA Pro Motocross racer Jake

Loberg didn’t have the opportunity to pull a fast one on anyone, as he was always on the point in the Open-A class. In the back section, he was working hard to pull out a triple jump from two separate jumps, a tabletop with a single after, a long ways off. Never seen anyone attempt it before, and Loberg was getting within a whisker of pulling it off on his way to a dominating performance. Number two finisher Philip Maus from Albany, MN was wheeling pretty good, but neither Maus or KTM mounted Spencer Henrikson could wrestle the point from Loberg. In 50cc pre-mix 7-8 racing, the #73 Cobra of Trent Goodenough made the trip up from Eau Claire Wisconsin to nab the first place gold, with the KTM duo of Tony Nielson from Cedar, MN in second and third place finisher Gunner Kenowski rounding out the podium. In the 65cc 10-11 race, #97 Connor Klemenhagen was determined to set the world on fire, and when the gate dropped he turned his KTM 65 all the way up to 11! About forty feet out off the gate the front wheel started its ascent towards the sun, but Klemenhagen wasn’t about to back off. As the leading edge of the bike was looking to break through the stratosphere, the bike started to list to the port side towards two competitors. Klemenhagen hit the eject button as his whip was completing a tail dragger wheelie, allowing the two racers on his left to just squeak past. After Connor hit the deck, and the dust settled, he picked up his bike, with a look as if to say, what

the heck happened. He sparked up the KTM again and set about chasing down the field which he did, to great effect. Klemenhagen not only ended up going 1-1 in the 65cc class, he backed that up with top honors in the 85cc 9-11 class too! Junior 14-16 speedster Brady Miska put the hurt on his rivals by dominating the class in style on his immaculately prepared Yamaha. In +25A action, the #158 Suzuki ridden by Mark Arends was the meat in a Zebro/ Honda sandwich. Matt Zebro won both motos while brother Tim Zebro would go 3-3 and Arends finished in the silver position both times. The Women’s race was a real rock and roll affair. #77 Mariah Braastad came out on top with a 1-2 finish to the #151 of Anndi Ertel who went 3-1. Kourtney Trautner from Watertown, SD completed the podium ceremony. The 2-strokes were out in force as the 125cc 12+ class would attest to. #461 Justin Evans and #278 Kole Lemke were hooked together like the KTM Express in moto one for a 1-2 finish with Yamaha mounted Garrett Montgomery third. In the second moto, Montgomery and Lemke swapped positions. With intermittent light showers, puffy clouds and blue skies and temps in the low eighties, the day was perfect for racing. The racing was fast and safe and the racing community was in good spirits. Thanks again to all those responsible for the putting on of the race.

First turn race in +25A with #167 Honda mounted Tim Zebro getting the advantage. CYCLE USA, September 2014
